Question for everyone because I’m curious. In German we often misunderstand English lyrics in a way where we hear a random German sentence that is obviously not really there but people could swear it is because it sounds exactly like it and it’s hilarious. I’m wondering if this happens for people with other native tongues too?

gonna share some cute interaction I've had with the fourth-graders during a german class a few days ago:
me: so what did we notice here?
kids: the word "der löwe" in the genitive case has an ending -en, and "der tiger" has an ending -s, although they are both masculine nouns.
me: that's correct! this is because "der tiger" is a strong noun and is inflected differently.
that one little genius: isn’t a lion stronger than a tiger though?

Just found out that in Icelandic they call Dermatology (the Icelandic equivalent of) "skin lore" cause they never adopted the Greek and Latin Suffixes and prefixes as heavily as English did and so stuck to the Germanic way if expressing it.
Edit: Apparently this translation is innacurate. I had read this in a book, but apparently it is false. Apologies.

bye i always wondered how “hals- und beinbruch” in german came to be used to wish someone good luck when it literally means breaking your neck and legs like i’d rather that doesn’t happen lol. i just found out it comes from hebrew but it means blessing and success (הצלחה וברכה - Hassloche u Wroche), german speakers just misunderstood it to sound like hals- und beinbruch 💀💀💀

what if G-Pop (German pop) got popular like K-Pop and a bunch of teen girls all over twitter, tiktok, insta etc just start obsessing over artist like "Fritz" " Wilhelm " "Heidi" " Hans " "Analiese" and making them their pfps and trying to quote their german song lyrics. Trying to speak german (and it not turning out good) and calling G-Pop artist "Stattliche" "süß" "heiß" "Schnucki" and just obsessing over them and writing fanfics about them

These are the random and very unserious ramblings of a stoner whos also very fucking much into languages and learning them but also has a scorpio/sagittarius combo that makes them horrendously blunt/rude
Been studying Norwegian for the last 3 months (alongside revising/practising Hindi and a thorough revising of advanced English grammar), and I've been reflecting on language stuff so hard.
The silliest, unserious most striking aspect so far is that English is an truly an aberration, the French language absolutely ruined her and turned her into a deformity next to her Germanic siblings. Now, from a Romance language pov (native Spanish speaker here) that makes her suspiciously accessible. But at the end of the day, from that same pov (especially when it comes to the aesthetic aspect), all germanic languages are mostly rough sounding, rough looking and not the most aesthetically pleasing. However, and that's their biggest virtue imo, especially when contrasted with romance languages, they're so specific and straight to the point, unlike us who get lost into the figurative and the emotional.

Hello. Due to my penchant for increasingly cryptic bios, here's some additional information to help you decide whether to follow this blog:
I mostly reblog and occasionally make a personal or funny (?) post
Reblogs are usually about 70% random crap and 30% fandom
I'm learning Mandarin and lately also Cantonese (again)! Not a langblr or whatever but it's a topic that comes up :)
Doing my best to stay out of discourse and succeeding most of the time
I'm here, I'm queer, I'm really fucking weird
Oh yes there will be neurodivergence and chronic illness blogging
Who else has been mostly trapped in their homes since before the pandemic? High five! 🫠
Since German is my native language, I like to occasionally ramble about differences between German and English. Accents and languages are a special interest
I've given up on using warning tags except for the most egregious stuff and so far no one's complained, but do let me know if there's something you need tagged
I fell into several Chinese media fandoms on entirely separate occasions and just kinda live here now I guess; I like Cantopop a normal amount (lying) and have been watching almost nothing but c-dramas for two years, a significant percentage of which was Daomu Biji adaptations
Favourite older fandoms include Star Trek (especially DS9), Good Omens, Doctor Who, BSG and BBC Merlin. My favourite movie is Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead
I've been trying to read the Southern Reach series but unfortunately I can't read
Currently trying on they/he pronouns for size
