It Hurts So Much
So much suffering in our world. Yesterday’s headlines bore more bad news. I read in Dr. Jim Denison’s daily article that the beloved Senior Pastor of Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas, Bryan Dunnigan, age 44, passed away in his sleep due to natural causes. He leaves behind his wife and three children. Many are grieving deeply today. I also read about the massive manhunt for the gunman…

1 John 4:10 (NLT) - This is real love—not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.

I think people overestimate how feminist team black is. If someone brings up how Baela should be the heir to Driftmark, it's always "she would've been Queen if not for the Greens!", ignoring that 1, she would be Queen consort, not a Queen in her own right, and 2 she has a legitimate claim in her own right to Driftmark. Team Black's goal is to crown Rhaenyra, but Rhaenyra becoming Queen isn't a win for feminism because it does nothing to dismantle the rest of the patriarchal system that exists in Westeros. From what we've gotten so far, it reads that Rhaenyra wants to be the exception and not the rule. Rhaenyra has made a lot of bad political decisions, which means she can't acknowledge Baela's claim because it would weaken her own claim (blatantly admitting her eldest sons are illegitimate would not end well for her to say the least). So she betrothes Jace and Luke to Baela and Rhaena to kind of atone for that, like as a consolation prize Baela will be Queen and Rhaena will be lady of Driftmark, neither of them would hold either title in their own right. It's good matches because the kids like each other and will treat each other well, but it's not a feminist win or a feministic liberation. It's usurpation, usurpation that takes place because Rhaenyra has to do damage control after having illegitimate children and after a serious of bad political decisions (both hers and her fathers, Viserys is the arbiter of this entire mess). To me, Rhaenyra is very reminiscent of Mary Queen of Scots, I can see a lot of elements drawn from Mary's history in Rhaenyra's story and character, down to their sons eventually taking the crown they failed to claim/keep.
#hotd#hotd spoilers#house of the dragon#house of the dragon spoilers#Rhaenyra targaryen critical#I'm going to do a rewatch prior to season 2 & I'm going to analyse the bad political decisions from vis & Rhaenyra that lead to the dance#like by no means the only factors at play lets not forget otto daemon larys etc#but it's an interesting factor that the fandom doesn't really acknowledge#and a lot of Rhaenyra's bad political decisions are understandable because of her youth and because viserys does fuck all to prepare her#like even if she wasn't who he choose as heir she should've been given a better political education as a princess#but vis fails his most of his other four kids in that regard to#i mean he also fails to acknowledge them or remember them but anyways#he is a huge part of the reason aegon and aemond became he they did#props to whoever probably alicent for sending daeron to oldtown so he could grow up well adjusted#alicent: i'm writing a letter to daeron is there anything you would like to say to him?#viserys: daemon? why are you writing to daemon?#alicent: daeron?#viserys: who?#alicent: our son? the one you sent to squire in oldtown?#viserys: i think i'd remember if we had a son who's name was one letter different to my brothers#viserys: in fact i do alicent do you mean the one who lost an eye?#alicent: *screaming internally*#viserys targaryen#king viserys#rhaenyra is such an interesting character but i hate how the fandom sanctified her because how dare characters be complex and have flaws#like you dont have to justify their actions or bend over backwards to deny their faults to like a character you know 😭#and the same thing is done to daemon who is far more fucked up and far more flawed in the show than the fandom allows#i hate the team stuff tho i get hbo going for it as a marketing move that was genius but my god are certain stans insufferable#the entire point of the dance is that its a pointless tragedy there's no good or bad side theyre both awful in their own ways#but thats a longer rant for another time outside of the tags

modern otome games dont do it for me anymore bc even though some of them let you pick pronouns/gender, theyre still heavily written for women (which is fair, its OTOME game for a reason, i stopped being their target demographic years ago) who specifically love to be dominated and/or degrated to different degrees, most of the time being seduced/whisked away lowkey against their will, which leads me to believe modern otome are the equivalent of those books for sexually repressed wives
#thinking abt the old otome i used to play#that was the wildest fucking scenarios ever#like#oh yeah youre the sultan's new adopted daughter#you can now bang his other adopted sons. who are extremely hot and into you#or hey. youre cinderella#straight up cinderella. pick a prince to marry and avoid some royal scandal and dabble in the world of politics#to avoid waging war against the other kingdoms#or hey. you had a car accident years ago and the ptsd makes you unable to sleep at night#its been like 10 years so your bestie recommends you hire a sleeping boyfriend who just helps you sleep#so its some guy counting sheep to you and finding out about your repressed trauma and coping mechanisms and helping you thru it#or hey#a star fell from the sky#thats a guy! he says hes your boyfriend!#the gods sent him to learn to be human so he doesn't become a shitty god when he grows up#OR NEKOMIMIS AVOID BEING HUNT DOWN BY POACHERS AND HIDE IN YOUR HOUSE#like theyre all wild but softer than whatever is happening nowadays#like with what in hell is bad. or obey me. or all those other specific demon otomes#like. there was one abt dating the reaper. an angel. or a demon. and in their routes theyre saving you from the other two#but you genuinely got to know them to such a personal degree it stopped being an otome at points like#what do you mean the reaper has abandoned the concept of friendship bc everything he touches dies#so hes torn between killing you to continue this cycle or saving you to prove hes more than a bringer of death#now its just#horny.... or the MC is useless.......

It's so difficult, because I genuinely do want to understand what the whole deal with Christianity is, but Christians are so apposed to any line of questioning about their belief system (in a way that no other religion is) that if you say anything they don't like they shut down and accuse you of being a sinner.
And it's like bro, I'm not trying to be insulting, I'm trying to understand why this religion is even appealing to you. How do you manage to get so many converts when you're not even willing to answer basic questions about your theology?
Everyone I've found who's actually willing to discuss Christian theology with me is an ex-Christian which is super unhelpful, because ex-Christians are people who have deconstructed Christian belief and come to the conclusion that it doesn't work for them. They're always very cynical about the whole situation. That's not what I'm looking for.
I want to talk to someone who's still into it. I want to understand what actually draws people to this religion ( I do not want to be trauma dumped at - I don't know what aspect of Christian belief confuses y'all into thinking that trauma dumping is an appropriate substitute for theological discussion, but it absolutely isn't).
Like you would really think for one of the most popular religions in the world finding answers to this stuff would be easier. Why can't you guys just talk about your beliefs?
#Christianity#religion#like I just don't understand#if the basic conceit of the religion is that God sent his only son down to Earth so that he could relate to and better understand humans#then I have a lot of questions#because a) if he's a all knowing god why does he need help understanding humans anyway?#b) if you're taking the Bible literally. Why would he then require Jesus to be celibate and die at 30?#like aren't sex and aging and relationships all parts of the human experience that god would want to know about?#and c) if you're taking the Bible metaphorically. The meaning of this story seems to be#that the divine will never truly relate to or understand you. That you are infact so different from the divine#that if an aspect of god came down from the heavens to interact with the people#your sins and the sins of your community as a whole would kill that divinity before it could live out a full human life#which is a genuinely interesting concept! like I would read a novel with that plot#but I don't understand why that's appealing from a faith perspective#is the appeal the act of forgiveness afterwards?#like the divine are so fundamentally different from us that we would kill them but they would forgive us for that difference anyway#why is difference something that must be forgiven rather than accepted?#like do you see why I'm confused by this stuff?#anyways#posting to this blog because a surprising number of Christians follow me here#maybe one of y'all can help me understand

I think one of the reasons WoT is my top favourite series is because it’s one of the few works of fiction where every main character’s story could stand alone and make its own interesting book series. The EF5 all start out as people who aren’t travelled and who the rest of the world would see as naive farmers. By the end, Rand is TDR, Mat is the greatest general the world has ever known and husband to an Empress, Egwene is the Amyrlin seat and has forged the White Tower back together, Perrin is King of the Wolves and dominates the dream world better than any man, and Nynaeve is the strongest healer the world knows who has discovered how to heal stilling/gentling (not to mention the new queen of a previously broken people).
Take any individual storyline and it could be an entire book series itself, especially since each character has their own supporting cast during various times in their storylines. They all develop enough and go through enough that in any other fantasy world any single one could be The Chosen One or singularly save the world. Not to mention a stilled Amyrlin who has to use her wits to survive when power fails, an Aes Sedai who’s on a years-long quest to find a man reborn from a hero, a broken king who eventually reunites his people and kills one of the most powerful men to exist, a Princess-Heir who loses her ‘right’ to the throne and instead has to prove she deserves it by fighting for it tooth and nail, and an Aiel who finds out everything she thought she knew is a lie and has to struggle with how to become a leader of her people through times where her people are giving up.
And these are just the main characters, there’s a hundred others whose stories are incredible and who could hold their own as the single main character. If they weren’t so fleshed out and their lives didnt feel so lived, I don’t think the idea of the Pattern would’ve worked half as well as it did. But because we see countless characters who are living as hard as they can (and even ‘minor’ characters who do things that mean the difference between a win or loss at the Last Battle), the concept of the Pattern and every single life having meaning works incredibly well. The Wheel really does need every thread to weave a proper Pattern.
