« In a country defined by the ongoing existential battle over whether this will be a white nationalist society or a multiracial democracy, the majority of people reject the idea of making America white again. Most people in America prefer the Democrats’ vision of a multiracial America (however halfheartedly it may be expressed at times) to the raw, unapologetic white nationalism espoused in coded and not-so-coded ways by Republicans. With the sole exception of the 2004 presidential election, the Democratic nominee has won the popular vote in every single presidential election over the past 30 years.
Republicans understand this reality better than Democrats which is why they ferociously focus on suppressing the vote far more than Democrats emphasize expanding voting. »
— Steve Phillips at The Guardian.
Republicans will use every trick they know to suppress the non-MAGA vote. In addition to legal methods such as restricting voting hours and making absentee voting more difficult, they will work with their partners in Russia to spread disinformation to discourage moderate and liberal voters from casting ballots.
We need to do more grassroots work to get out the vote. There's no substitute for person to person contact to identify potential supporters and to make sure they vote. And the earlier we get started, the better.
At the very least, we need to be certain that like-minded people are properly registered. We should not be reticent about asking others whether they're registered.
Because voting is highly geographic, it's necessary to remind people that they need to register at their new address after they move. Even if you move across the street, you need to register at THAT address. After you've reminded the people who have moved, follow up two weeks later to make sure they've done so.
If friends think that voting is important to you, they are more likely to vote when the time comes.
I Will Vote

It’s midterm Election Day!
What are midterms?
Tumblr media
Help get out the vote:
- Sign up to call or text to remind people to vote
- Drive someone to the polls
- Support the Every Last Vote fund to help overcome voter suppression efforts
- Share a positive, progressive message on social media (it may seem small, but it helps to stop hate & disinformation from spreading!)
- Thank a poll worker!
Tumblr media
Some last-minute reminders:
- If they say you are not registered to vote at the polls, do not leave! Ask for a provisional or affidavit ballot.
- Call the Election Protection Hotline 866-OUR-VOTE or 866-VE-Y-VOTA with any questions or concerns. See other numbers above.
- And of course… if you are in line to vote, stay in line! They must allow you to vote as long as you were in line before polls closed.
- Finally, it may take days or even weeks to calculate the election results. Be patient and remind others that this is normal and expected.
Tumblr media
Resources:
- Am I registered to vote?
- Can I register on Election Day?
- Where is my polling place?
- What’s on my ballot?
- Get a discounted Lyft to the polls

Since this is an election year for the USA, I gotta shout-out Vote411.org, which can help USA citizens:
Register to vote (and make sure you're still registered)
Find your nearest polling station and election date
Learn who is running and what their policies are - including for local races!
Learn your rights in case someone tries to prevent you from voting
Get help if you encounter problems on voting day or need to vote by mail
If your vote didn't matter, politicians wouldn't be trying to take it away, and Putin's government wouldn't be trying to interfere. Get registered and vote!

you know it's funny how aziraphale's first ever move on crowley was to sultry propose he "does something for him in return" while they were driving in his car after the church explosion and that's even before they went on a silly flirty date that ended with drinking red wine, but the FUNNIEST knee-slapping thing out of it all is that 25 years later aziraphale is the one to say that crowley is going too fast for him.

I think people forget something very important about the “if it weren’t for the baby comment.” While on its face it is genius bc he knows and understands that there is a penetrating rhetoric and belief that “babies” (this is an important distinction bc children are murdered for sport in thg universe) are to be protected. But where the REAL genius is, is when he said they were married in secret. If they weren’t married, she’s just a slut who had unprotected sex with a man who she wasn’t married to. Peeta made sure that there would be no morality judgement against them consummating their marriage, rather than them just having sex as dating/fiancees. She knows how the Capitol, the rich and privileged, view women’s bodies. They were sad that Katniss could die; they were indignant, near rebellious, that her puritanically ordained baby could die alongside her. God, Suzanne Collins is just so fucking smart. It’s the little things.
Anyway, please make sure you’re checking your voter registration regularly and double-checking if your state has an abortion measure up on a random day of the year. That’s how your state houses are trying to make them fail. Use your right to vote. If the White House and Senate flip they will pass an abortion ban across all 50 states. Please try to protect your rights locally and then nationally. You can also donate to https://abortionfunds.org and the money automatically goes where it’s most necessary. Please donate to your local clinics and Planned Parenthoods too if you can.

Two headlines which help explain the victory of Poland's pro-democracy opposition in Sunday's election...
Opozycja zmobilizowała niegłosujących. Na PiS głosował żelazny elektorat (The opposition mobilized non-voters. An iron electorate voted for PiS)
Stats are preliminary, but voter turnout was around 73% in Sunday's parliamentary election – a post-Communist high. The opposition got out the vote – big time. As many as 31% of the eligible voters who did not vote in the 2019 election voted in this one. Meanwhile, the ruling party whose acronym is PiS tightly held on to its own voters; it wasn't enough for them. 87% of PiS voters had voted in 2019.
Wśród młodych najwięcej stracił PiS (PiS lost most among young people)
Of the five party groupings which won seats in the Sejm, PiS came in fifth among voters under 30. Donald Tusk's Koalicja Obywatelska (KO) came in first and Lewnica came in second. The rigid socially conservative agenda of PiS was regarded as repulsive by many young people in Poland.
But wait, there's more!
One aspect of the youth vote which the second TVN24 article did not emphasize is that women were particularly important in the turnout. This is from a DW article about the defeat of PiS.
High turnout thanks to young and female voters
Observers say young and female voters, motivated by the issue of abortion rights — which the ruling PiS has sought to curtail and Donald Tusk has promised to liberalize — turned out in large numbers to support opposition parties. "Until recently, half of women said they would not vote," sociologist Justyna Kajta of SWPS University in Warsaw told AFP news agency. "Now these exit polls actually show more women than men voted."
From "half of women said they would not vote" to "more women than men voted" shows how decisive increased involvement by women, especially younger women, can be.
During the 2020 demonstrations against the extremist anti-abortion law authored by PiS I saw a sign which this election reminded me of. It displayed a fundamental truth as well as a great bilingual political pun based on a classic song by Bob Marley.

The word kraj is pronounced like the English word cry. In Polish, kraj means country though in certain contexts it tends to refer to Poland in particular. For language nerds, you may recognize it as coming from the same Slavic root as Ukraine (Ukraina as written in Polish).
For a well-functioning country, you need active participation by women in the political process. That happened this week in Poland. ❤️🇵🇱
So massive GOTV and appealing to forward-looking young people had a considerable impact in Poland. Those are lessons which should not be overlooked by center-left parties and coalitions in other countries.
BTW, a second exit poll was released for Sunday's election. It showed the current opposition with 249 seats in the Sejm; that's one more than the earlier poll. But the official results should be available by the middle of the week.

to my fellow American followers: hi everyone! This is your resident annoying poli sci friend here to remind you that midterm elections are tomorrow (Tuesday, November 8th)! If you're able and haven't done so yet, please remember to go to the polls and vote tomorrow! While all elections are important and have major impacts on our day-to-day lives, this election is particularly important given that it will determine which party controls both the House of Representatives and the Senate for the next 2-4 years; several races across the country up and down the ballot are very close right now, and every vote makes a difference.
Do whatever last-minute research on both the candidates (federal, state, and local) and any state or local referrendums you might be asked to vote on that you need to do, but please go vote. Check this link to see what times the polls close in your state, and remember that as long as you're in line by the time polls close you're legally allowed to cast your vote!
