i finally finished these!! i felt bad that hunter and monk didnt have their own titlescreen art, so i started on making my own for them a few months ago. nailing the official rendering made this harder than i thought haha

also, when i originally made these, i had the idea of making this into a sort of challenge for other people to make their own title art for these two. im still standing with that! if you want to take a shot at making your own version of titlescreen art for these two, go ahead! hell, tag me if you want.

nightcat!! a winged purposed messenger. theyre blind because of a bioengineering fuckup and instead rely on tracking iterator signals, which they use their whiskers for.

hunter! uh oh rot and green blood due to green rot.

gatherer! hunter's "technically sibling" and sig's first slugcat. their tail is prehensile :] they're based on an iggy projection slugcat!

gourmand! oh love the her. cherish the her. i love gourmand. she has a little pouch for sluppies! she can fit about 8 or more in that pouch. she's big

artificer, copper/firedancer and phosphore/flashbang! firedancer has green fire and is thusly named copper hehe. not many notes on these guys :o i just really like artificer's design.

rivulet!! teal!! and i hueshifted my original gradient a bit to fit this. i like them a lot

speam and laceweaver! laceweaver was a spearmaster prototype that suns kept. laceweaver mentored spearmaster alongside another prototype i haven't designed yet. the others.... didn't make it. suns didn't send the gold pearl for me! thats something pebbles made himself. i did alter downpour a lot because there's some things i don't particularly like and downpour is only really an au thats adding onto canon. dont get me wrong i like it but uh oh ramble i'll get into that if prompted

(darker colors are used for the more echo-y saint doodles; the whites are just colors i use for snow) saint! though i've altered the tail pattern design a bit though, usually it's more like this when i draw it.

though this design is also a bit more echo-y but the tail pattern is the same regardless. also the wings uhoh i need to redo a ref for saint

(the dark brown is used for the scars with dodge layers of the same color ontop)

return of the silly goobers! this post might get silent updates as i make tiny changes

surv! bit of a basic white color but with some patterns on em! got their little survivor symbol hood thing, so still dapper as ever

not shown here really but they still have the explosive mark on the back of their head

nighty! nothing significantly different with them, also still dapper as ever

no changes here! monk is still silly, the marks on their arms are results of a mess up when they were first learning crafts

and of course, got their goggles from gourm

hunter! still got their short tail, but now they have little earrings representing sig. colors are a bit updated tooo

spear and riv have made their mark on their bandages too

arti! only major change is some colors, their bandana has a little patch now since it was broken and then mended by gourm

gourmand got mostly color updates, a lot more warm now, and update i did in fact silently update this

rivvy, my favorite I lov them, they have even MORE frills now and little scaley spots, absolute fish I lov them. they have some pink freckles too! the fins do have a gradient, but! thats not required for any art

spear got some earrings too that represent suns, also some multicolor freckles as well. starting to realize the amount of designs I have that have freckles oops

Sliced blue fruit that's battered in caramelized slime mold then fried in oil. Topped with sugar. Very simple to make.

Slugcat Remarks: Monk: Survivor and I would eat these in the afternoon! I remember eating them during light drizzles. Too bad the lizards don't seem to like them.

Survivor: Everything seems to be better when cooked. It's always out of convenience that we never really commit to making dishes and instead eat the raw ingredients.

Nightcat: The longer you cook blue fruit, the redder it becomes. That's what Gourmand told me on how they achieved to make a gradient blue fruit dish. The sugary sprinkles make it look like a nightsky…

( I'm def not an expert just kinda threw myself into it a couple of months ago hahah) but I've been using monks cloth and various yarns. you can def use a qsnap (been using an old canvas frame with the canvas ripped out and large binder clips haha) I'm not sure about aida? but linen I think you can! :0 there's a youtube channel called ribbon candy rug hooking and she has a lot of info/videos about rug hooking.

How some of our favourite legos sneeze ig

Weird thought but have you every thought of how certain characters sneeze?

Firstly because of Wukong's association with clouds (some people draw him with fluffy hair)

So like what if he sneezes out little clouds?

Also like he does like a thing where he kinda shoots out like little glowing particles? Like a volcano shooting rocks in it's eruption (since Wukong'sca stone monkey) but with light instead?

Xiaotian is very similar cause the have the same powers but the glow particles are more clouds than rocks.

I've also seen the idea of baby mk turning into bebe monke when he sneezes so I've decided to thrown that in.

Similarly, Xiaojiao is a dragon and Ao guang has the horns & scales & stuff so she should be capable of that too so I applied the same logic to her as I did Xiaotian.

She doesn't sneeze out clouds but does poof into her semi-dragon form.

And instead of clouds we get...FIYAHHHHHHHH

I know eastern dragons spit water but Mei had the samahdi fire and made it green

I low-key made Mei look a bit like the Warden from minecraft XD cause the gradient on her horns.

Probably about 500 or so gens, in about 8 gen runs, and 3 gen runs in img2img, and about..25 layers in Sketchbook Pro

Why there are no religions in the world of "The last airbender"

The worldbuilding of ATLA is surprisingly deep and well thought out, well, up until season 2 of Korra, and even then it's mostly good

There are nations, cultures, philosophies, histories, secret societies... But you may have noticed there are no religions

"But there are temples!" you say, and you are right, there are temples to the Avatar full of monk and nuns, as well as the whole Air Nomad society which is a like huge religious order

But consider this, when Aang or Korra visited the temples to the Avatar the monks there were... Fine, they were glad the Avatar had visited, but they didn't fall the ground in veneration, they didn't fall in ecstasy at the presence of their deity. Only one person ever does in the entire series: The mouth foam guy

And remember, the Avatar is the chosen one of Raava, the embodiment of Order itself who fought against Vaatu to ensure the existence and prosperity of life

Raava IS a God by any definition of the word, and she is linked to the Avatar by her promise: "We will be together through ALL of your lifetimes, and we will NEVER give up", which basically enshrines the Avatar as demigod

And all of this is not a metaphor, this is history, it actually happened in the world of the story, and this is the reason why there are no religions in the world of ATLA

When the people of the Norther Water tribe tell you those weird fishes are literally the Moon and the Ocean, they mean it, this is literal truth. Maybe humans cannot fully understand how this works, but no one can deny it is true

If a forest burns down you can fully expect the spirit of the forest to manifest and attack people. If someone tells you the Lady of the Water is around doing vigilante justice, you take it seriously. The library of Wan Shi Tong is real, and Koh could steal your face if you run into him

My point is that the truth about the spiritual world is not up to debate in this world, and this makes people interact with the spiritual and the divine in a different way

For starters, people know they have souls, they know the reincarnate, this is a verifiable truth of the universe

For this reason when they think of the spirits they are not thinking of something that is fundamentally different to them, because people are spirits too, spirits that take physical bodies, much like the Moon and the Ocean

Some spirits are more powerful than others, but this is a gradient, and spirits can move up or down, so the difference between a God and a Spirit is kinda blurry. After all, Raava became incredibly weak before fusing with the spirit of Wan

And sure, a powerful spirit could abuse its power, but then other spirits could join to stop them, like what happened with Vaatu

And finally spirits are 99% of the time doing their own shit and they don't care too much about the physical world

All of this adds up to a worldview in which the word "worship" is meaningless. You wouldn't worship a forest spirit anymore than you would worship the city mayor. Maybe you should respect them, sometimes you should fear them, but you would never adore them

So what about the temples?

It seems that some people want to live simple lives contemplating the mysteries of the universe, and that's what temples and monasteries are for. But this life doesn't require the worship of anything

Sure, the Avatar is an example of the mysteries of the universe they wish to understand, like the primordial spirits, and reincarnation, but when you think about it, everything and everyone is an example of those mysteries. They are all spirits in the universe after all

Finally the Air Nomad society looks very religious, but when you think about it they are close as atheistic as you can get in a world were a God is literally always walking the Earth

The Air Nomads wish to be free from attachment, to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth, to stop being spirits and exit this place inhabited by mortal beings AND spiritual beings. The Air Nomads reject both the physical and the spiritual world because they wish to transcend both

This reveals something very interesting about our own world: Religions can only exist as we know them because we are not sure of any of their claims

Edit: I've thought of a better way to express my ideas on this subject, but you can see what I had originally written at the end

Try to imagine if any of the doctrines of Christianity or Islam would make sense if people were absolutely sure they are true

Take faith for example, both religions insist faith is necessary for salvation, but if people were sure that these religions are true, what's the point of faith?

Take halal eating, a set of rules to eat without sin. If people were sure Islam is true, would there be any virtue in eating halal? It would be like not putting a metal fork in an electric socket. It doesn't make you a good person, just a person who understands how the universe works

In fact, going to church, or the mosque, praying, doing all the rituals, would be empty, meaningless. Humanity just got told what are the electric sockets of the soul and we avoid them

Without uncertainty, none of these doctrines have any value

And yet, that's not universal. It is possible to have doctrines whose moral value is independent of any uncertainty, for example, Utilitarianism, Kanthian Ethics, or even some sects of Buddhism that don't teach anything about reincarnation or celestial beings

In the world of ATLA people and spirits would have no option but to follow similar doctrines, finding value in the suffering or joy we know we put into the world, into the universality of our actions, or into our perception of ourselves and our place in the universe. In fact, this is exactly what the Air Nomad society is all about

I guess, my conclusion is that religion, at least the way most people live it, needs uncertainty. We can imagine world were people are certain about the truth of religion, and in those worlds religion becomes empty

But that there are other doctrines that don't need uncertainty, and perhaps, we should focus on them more

Religions require faith, they require dogma, they create a cosmology and then they create disagreement when you find someone with a different cosmology, and they require constant effort to maintain people in the religion

Often religious people like to claim their religious is logical and obvious, that everyone would believe and be convinced if they just stopped resisting, but if this was the case, if people actually knew how the spiritual world works, it wouldn't be a big deal. It would be like gravity, or rain

Most major faiths repeat over and over how important faith is, but if people were actually sure, faith wouldn't be important. People don't have faith in the Avatar anymore than they have faith in their friends

I'm thinking about writing a story where an Abrahamic style god reveals itself constantly, so that no one can have any doubts, en explore how such a world would function

survivor! scar on snout is based on one of the cut arena sprites for player 1, it has a little.. scar? notch? line? there. survivor passage symbol on head as well and freckles :) some brown to match monk sorta. spikey fur!

overall more rounded than survivor, to reference the monk passage symbol which is also on their head. a little dewlap to reference gourmand - i think gourmand and survivor and monk are related. lighter yellows to reference survivor!

third sibling!!! the little orange line on their head is actually karma 7 (i realized survivor is karma 5 and monk is karma 6- so why not go with the theme?) and a sorta partial saint symbol on their head, missing the middle line. yellow/red accenting color to reference monk and survivor sorta. blu :)

sorta pinker. based on one of my old draft designs, just made a little better. green accent color to match sig. a little fluffy and sharp. ear tufts cause theyre fun and a tufted tail. hunter passage symbol is also on tail teehee. sig's head symbol is also on hunter. the scar is also green

nightcat is some sorta weird echo thing. to me. little wings for the fun of it. i dont have much on this design honestly other than i used dodge A Lot. the accenting pink on the dark purple parts was originally an accident but like? it vibes.

wanderer! cause actually why not. the white symbol on their chest is a half of sig's symbol, i'd like to think sig helped suns make wanderer. if you put its head symbol together with nightcat it makes the scholar :) blue accenting color is close to the negative/opposite colors of nightcat.

i dont have many notes for this biggol guy. sorta looks alike survivor and monk i suppose. feathers! theyre sorta rose colored i think. idk. it looks nice. simple patterns cause gourmand is a symbol guy

artiiii. i wanted to put an accent color on arti but it was so Hard because i was Stubborn and Needed That Damn Cyan on it. markings based on a siamese cat except for the ones on the arm and legs, theyre sort of tabby based?

green pup is tabby based in markings, pink sorta looks like flower petals. blue pup is siamese cat based in markings and the yellow? idk it looked nice

RIVULETTT. i love rivulet. i made the bright sunset gradient contrast by adding some darker but still vibrant blues and purples to the design, as well as a cream. there's also actual gills udner the display frills (which also got a color update to match instead of being an offbrand bi flag). also webbed fingers!!!

vibrant fuckin purple because it looks nice actually. made it have some cream-pink-purple thing as underbelly instead to make it look nicer. head markings are based directly on suns :) biggol Orb Eyes to Stare In Your Soul. accenting colors sorta match rivulet? idk? they just look nice without contrasting too much. also whiskers. and tall. and thin with long ass grabbers

i kept getting "portal colors" and "aroace flag" and like YEA YALL ARE RIGHT ACTUALLY i just wanted to fit blue and orange on it though lmao. anyway pretty simple body markings to make up for the Six Fucking Accent Colors. three forehead dots are yellow while there's an x on its back and head thats blue... to imitate the rot :) why? figure it out yourself

inv!! not much has changed since honestly i just saturated the colors a bit more i think. idk. i like the yellow on inv though so i make it more prominent sorta? just a guy. still an iterator that turned itself into a slugcat. to me.

survivor! an all around skilled slugcat. they took on a lot of survival instincts in their attempts to find their family again. they are generally laid-back, but joke around every now and then. their left arm is severely hurt from either the fall or a scuffle with a lizard (or even a mistake bomb throw (because we all did that, right??)), but can still move, just not at its full force.

nightcat! an extremely smart coder. they are quite shy, but once you get to know them they warm up fast. they have an extreme love for things like cryptids! generally they sneak around the shadows, but occasionally they visit moon (who gave them their scarf! or maybe nsh, undecided) they have a unique talent, that being when then blush they produce little stars sparkles, which survivor finds adorable

monk is an energetic slugcat at heart. they can be calm and serious when its needed, but they love to bounce around and investigate things! once they had saw gourmand crafting a couple times and immediately became invested in becoming their apprentice. they now love to craft and are quite witty at it too. they love to tell survivor the things they learn, which survivor then takes into effect with the limited crafts they know such as bombs and lanterns they have marks on their arms from crafting accidents (they also have a couple lizard pets :D) (considering using monk to represent myself, sort of. slugsona sort of??)

gourmand is an extremely patient and kind-hearted soul. they take the time to help any slugcat they see in need. they took monk under their mentorship to teach them the wonders of crafting, though even monk has been making combinations gourmand could never imagine i tried making them look like a bread loaf (with the lines and everything, but they looked weird) though i hope the warm colors help them seem welcoming!

artificer has an extremely troubled past, the loss of their pups damaged them beyond belief. their reaction is still something im developing, but i think im going in the direction of them sort of blaming themself and becoming almost manic in a way. however! they have a happier present! one of the slugcats (undecided) had found them and worried for their wellbeing, giving them the comfort artificer missed dearly. they still struggle to open themself up to others entirely, but they are working on it they may or may not find their pups again, arti's story is still a draft here buuut they are very close to hunter and gourmand, as well as friends with rivulet and spearmaster they may not also have the best relationship with saint

hunter, a messanger sent from nsh to revive moon, is INCREDIBLY touch starved. they distanced themself from interacting much with other slugcats due to their rot, leading them to be socially anxious as well. they do, however, meet rivulet and spearmaster who help them become more comfortable with interaction. hunter then develops feelings for the both of them and wham pufferfish their bandages were painted over by rivulet and spearmaster with their respective colors :D their pupils are also more like slits compared to the other slugcats

rivulet is a very goofy fish. they have enough energy to last a lifetime. they will never stop building those around them up and creating just an overall positive energy in the room. they love to explore and meet new faces everywhere they go. one of those faces would be spearmaster, who rivulet quickly grew on. they, of course, are very close to moon! as said in hunter's bio, them and spearmaster had come across hunter and yay pufferfish the pearls on their tail represent spear and hunter, both found in shoreline their fins have a slight gradient, though its not required for art :o

spearmaster, created by and close with srs, is a more serious slugcat. their original mission had created an immediate caution instinct to any danger they sensed, and a distaste for five pebbles. they now have a distinct scar on their chest. they communicate via sign language and are very artistic, but are generally less social than the average slugcat. rivulet had helped them meet the other slugcats, but by themself they were never really good at maintaining those conversations. however, if you do get the know them, they are very loveable and soft at heart. the markings on their back sort of represent a fawn in a way, and the bracelets they wear represent rivulet and hunter :D they are also the tallest i may or may not project onto them uh

saint is tired, very very tired. the endless cycle of rebirth they face when trying to ascend has left them annoyed at best. they distance themself from the other slugcats, but they still occasionally try to get saint to join in. saint is close with gourmand they are short but very fluffy. the spots on their tail represent echoes, and the lighter parts of their fur are sort of like snow? markings? they are a little chilly idk their paws are different colors (left and right) they also take a particular connection to lotus flowers

enot is just yeah, they try their best lol. essentially like they act in the dating sim, they just want love. Though this enot isn't constantly going after it. They like to goof around more than that tbh. their design is the same as before i kinda just changed the darkest blue a little. they managed to befriend nightcat, who they goof around with every now and then

also they have eyelashes purely because I asked my friend who likes enot if they want to give them a trait and they said lashes so! aaaaaaaaaaand thats it wow

THE MAGICIAN - i've always taken this card to mean that you already have everything you need, it is just up to you to actually do something; in the same vein, you have everything you need at the start of rain world. unlike a metroidvania, there are no upgrades earned mid-campaign. it's just you, and eight buttons.

[design notes under the cut]

this card is meant to look like survivor at the very start of their campaign, with all the main things needed to progress and survive in rain world - food (batfly and bluefruit, the most common foods found in campaigns) and weapons/defence (rubbish and a spear). again its meant to convey that 'everything you need is within you' energy (<- reference to the minecraft end poem) and the idea that despite its similarities to metroidvania games its really not one (metroidvanias are largely defined by the 'get movement/ability upgrade, kill boss' style gameplay loop. in contrast in rain world('s base game) upgrades are either visiting echoes or visiting pebbles and have nothing to do with ability or movement upgrades unless you count the campaigns itself and their difference in slugcats.)

other design notes: -ive finally figured out scug anatomy! i dont know why it took me so long to finally settle on how slugcat anatomy works but i did in this piece. -the rubble was intentionally chosen those three are my favorite rubble types hell yeah brick :DD -again the background is survivor (and monks) starting room in outskirts. to reference its in outskirts (and to reference that one map in the miraheze wiki that puts all the region maps together) i put a slight tealish green blue gradient over the whole piece. -it wasnt intentional totally intentional but the spear is referencing the actual magician tarot card which always seems to hold either a candle or some other manner of stick -very intentionally does not have the survivor sigil on top. this is to reference the fact that number one you do not have it at the start and number two the like. forty cycles it took for me to get it the first time i played rain world (im pretty sure i only got it after receiving the pebbles karma upgrade)
