I finally read "Grays" and I kinda fell in love (again) with Joel... he is just so, I don't know? Adorable? I mean, him being insecure isn't adorable but him looking at her while she is taking in his beauty and him mistaking it for confirmation of his fears makes him endearing and, much like it is mentioned, human.

So human... I guess sometimes we get lost in his hardened survivor characteristic that it is difficult to see just how humanly he acts towards everything and anything.

As always, it feels like you capture his essence perfectly and then mold it to your beautiful writing that always leaves me feeling all sort of things.

Something that is mentioned in the fic, that him getting more gray means that he has gotten the privilege of getting old is particularly bittersweet, sweet because he survived for so long and got to live and experience love (in more than one way in terms of the fic) but bitter because he didn't get to see the ones he cared about get older.

(I also read the one where he is sick and once again this sense of him being adorable (endearing?) overwhelms me because I would like it if he didn't feel so guilty and insecure but at the same time it is a very Joel thing for him to feel)

So like a year ago, I made a post asking why Dorian confessed to murdering Basil in the 1891 edition of the book, but not the 1890. For the last few months, while working on tlg and the comic, I’ve on and off again worked on a small animatic for the ending of TPODG. Because of this I’ve had to reread the ending conversation with Henry again and again. And a thought occurred to me:

Is Dorian’s ‘desire to be good’ actually an attempt to stop being objectified?

Dorian’s ‘desire to be good’ is obviously horseshit, even to himself, but why does he do it? "To feel something new" is a lazy explanation especially when the book literally says that “[h]e felt a wild longing for the unstained purity of his boyhood”. He doesn’t want something new, he wants what he had before. But it’s not the innocence of his youth, nor something material he desires—it’s the way people treated him before Henry and Basil.

The thing that always stood out to me was this exchange (occuring after Dorian’s confession): 

“There is someone at White’s who wants immensely to know you—young Lord Poole, Bournemouth’s eldest son. He has already copied your neckties, and has begged me to introduce him to you. He is quite delightful and rather reminds me of you.”

“I hope not,” said Dorian with a sad look in his eyes.”

While many modern adaptations either forget this line or give a charitable reading, to me it reads as though Dorian realizes he’s replaceable. Even though he has a magic portrait and eternal youth, he still is a dying relic of a changing world. He will never be anything more than the innocent, youthful doll society and Henry treated him as.

His confession, to Henry of all people, was a final plea to be seen as more than the dumb youth, as an innocent angel—he is begging Henry to look at him and see that Dorian Gray is a person. That he feels more than youth, or beauty, or idolatry. That he is capable of great violence and even greater crime, like any other man and through that can be capable of evolving with the time like any other. He doesn't want to live as a passing fancy of perverts and naive young people.

But Henry breaks all of that in one simple line:

“You and I are what we are, and will be what we will be.”

But, Lord Henry was never going to see Dorian as a real person. Because Henry himself isn’t real. ‘Lord Henry’ is a role he plays, one that consumed him far before the first chapter. In many ways, his cynical philosophy is his own defective portrait. He hides any semblance of a person in his role of ‘cynical hedonist’ and denies any change. He too is a dying relic of a changing world.

When Henry denies his attempt to change, Dorian seeks Basil’s portrait of him. I think it's quite telling that even after he murder him, Dorian seeks implicit comfort from the man who had idolized his rose-white purity. Basil was the only relationship that was closest to what he had before. But the sad truth is laid bare:

No one ever saw Dorian Gray as a real person. 

He was always a role being played. 

And he dies tragically discarded.

aww thank you! i'm so glad you noticed! yes, i made the pfp myself :)) it's my favorite character of all times ;w; Allen Walker from D. Gray man! here's the full work!

i colored the lineart and changed the layermode to Multiply, i also duplicated the lineart and set it under the Multiply layer then gave it a layermode of Colorburn! this gives it a crispy color in my case (but you can always play around with colors and different layermodes to get the best effect which different from each drawing, in my case it just happened to be this) I like duplicating line arts and changing their colors/layermodes when i play around :))

i used mostly flat colors but added slight hue variations along with a simple shadowing! I only have one value for the shadows but instead of using a single color, i used different colors with the same value to give it a more colorful and lively look:

for example, when i turn everything into black and white, you can see that the fur has only 1 value in terms of shading but in reality i used different colors that have similar values to make it livelier!

Can I ask what makes Arlecchino evil? I'm v much a villain enjoyer and like some morally greyness, but I genuinely didn't pick up on a lot of bad stuff with Arlecchino. She was super helpful during Fontaine and seemed to be the only powerful person who cared about helping the common folk when the water levels were rising.

I'm not here to start an argument, just wanna expand my view 🙏

i will talk about sensitive themes under the cut (mentions of when i was groomed/emotionally abused by my adoptive father/mentions of abuse/grooming in general) so if someones not good with this, be warned please and dont click for your emotional comfort.

i really love arlecchino (theres also difficult, personal reasons ig) and id rather wait for her to arrive to get more information than we have so far through other characters/side quests/main quest but well.

her goals aligned with ours in the fontaine quest which is why we have the impression shes a good/nice person, especially considering our other meetings with the harbingers we met so far (signora, childe, scara, dottore) and the situations. shes very calm and diplomatic (lets see how it changes in the next update when we fight her)

but we shouldnt forget how the travellers on their toes the entire time/everytime they come in contact with arle. its because shes a harbinger after all. shes a danger. her graceful politeness and calmness is supposed to have you on guard, make your hairs rise. shes mentioned to be manipulative and shes manipulating others to achieve what she wants by being nice and calm. she has ulterior motives. we should be careful. this is my impression based on my own gaming experience and idk if it was the same w others, but bc of us being on guard around her i was always prepared for her to turn on us until the end of the main quest.

anw, arle is supposed to be intimidating and have you wary. even tho she comes off as nice and polite, having done good and helped in the main story. its bc thats what she wanted and you happened to have the same goal. also lets not forget scaras and childes thoughts about her which already tells a lot

she has two sides. the one we saw in the quest, the graceful, calm, polite face to get what she wants. and the other, the one scara and childe talk about here, the one they call "crazy"

not to mention her codename, "the knave". what does it mean? servant. what else does it mean? "dishonest/deceitful man". basically, swindler. isnt it perfect?

shes manipulative and whatever her "true" nature is, we dont know (yet). she may have "good intentions" here or there but will achieve them no matter what it takes.

as for the thing you can consider as bad; the house of the hearth is an orphanage that raises children into fatui agents. only those who have potential join the ranks while the others are kept close (its not known whats done with them afaik). theyre basically grooming/raising child soldiers/spies.

before the sensitive stuff comes up, for the ppl who dont want to proceed, arlecchino fools/manipulates you into thinking shes a nice person/good parent. its amazing and so in character for her. its also scary how some ppl cant see the abuse/manipulation unless you went through this too or well. just actually read and realize it.

arlecchino is an emotionally manipulative parental figure. now, this is coming from someone who went through heavy abuse/was groomed by their adoptive father who was extremely manipulative and i spot so many things very well known to me. others who went through the same get this feeling. these signs you immediately recognize.

you get punished for the tiniest mistakes and when you get loved, it makes you forget all that was done to you, just for that tiny bit of affection you crave. you try to do your best, to do everything asked and expected of you, not to disappoint the only parent you have and youre dependent on, to be a good kid deserving of love and when you slip up youre in shambles. there was a time i did a tiny mistake by accident and my father said to me in the coldest voice "you broke my trust" and i remember so vividly how it broke me, how i cried until i got sick. i was physically abused before and none of it hurt me more than this. it still gets to me after all those years. emotional manipulation is cruel

what im trying to say is, she came in a time of need. taken as a savior while it just is one abuser swapped out with another. like my adoptive father having me dependent, giving me love i never received and being everything i wanted, making me believe hes everything i need, a common thing abusers do. wanting to do everything youre asked of and do it good, the fear of disappointing and being punished, believing you deserved it bc its your fault and treating your abuser like a savior, being conditioned. this is whats happening.

now, arle genuinely loves and protects her children; its very clear that the life of the children matter to her the most (look at childes line and freminet/lynette etc) - she was one of them too after all. so, its possible to love and still do these. moral greyness etcetc

anyway idk if its understandable or if i can explain it in proper words while maintaining a good distance so ill add the voicelines of the siblings heavily implying this, and also a tweet adressing this that brings it to proper words, better than i can say

Alright I want to expand more on this reply and this reply I wrote because I was cooking and these thoughts are so good they deserve a whole post dedicated to them (this post will make more sense if you read those two posts I linked first btw, but it’s not 100% necessary lol).

I believe Wash’s role in Project Freelancer was to see what kind of impact a hyper-competitive, heavily individualistic focused environment would have on an individual who has previously been deeply embedded into the forced collectivist assimilation seen in the military, and vice versa; What kind of impact an individual of Wash’s inherently outgoing and collaborative temperament would have among a group of hyper-competitive, introverted loners.

Wash really stands out to me because he seems to outright refuse to compete with the other Freelancers. I mean, admittedly, all the guys in pfl come off as significantly less competitive than the women (which is its own can of worms), but Wash is the only Freelancer who shows no competitiveness period.

North for example, was not happy about Carolina showing up at the oil platform and voices as much to South. I think North’s displeasure is directly related to pfl’s competitive nature, because normally when you’re outnumbered and outgunned—As he and South were—You’d be very glad for reinforcements. So logically, North being upset about Carolina showing up must be because it will reflect on them poorly. 

Maine and Wyoming are characterized as sore losers—They were so pissed about Tex handing their asses to them that they were willing to seriously injury, if not outright kill her, by using live ammo and live grenades in a training exercise.

York’s competitiveness is portrayed in a similar vein to North’s, as in it’s very subtle. York was just as frustrated as Maine and Wyoming were, and I don’t see another reason for why he’d force himself to leave medical early after having a grenade blow up in his face beyond the longer he’s off the roster, the further down the board he gets.

We don’t see any type of competitive behavior like the examples above from Wash throughout the entirety of the flashbacks, but we do see a different type of behavior from him.

Project Freelancer creates an environment that is trifled with animosity, exclusion, and favoritism, and while The Director is able to fool the other Freelancers into perpetrating this behavior among their ranks, he isn’t able to fool Wash into it—In fact, Wash refuses to tolerate it, and he actively fights against it everywhere that he can.

When Ct is beating herself up over a failed mission, Wash is the one that goes to comfort her, and what kind of language does he use to do so? Language that avoids pinning the blame on Ct alone and instead puts it on the whole team. “It wasn’t your fault, Connie.”, “So the ball got dropped, we were all there.”, “Everyone make mistakes.” 

When Maine and Wyoming bring out the live ammo, and York gets injured because of it, everyone else is mad at Tex. But Wash? He’s pissed at Maine and Wyoming, it was their choice to use live ammo that lead to York’s injury, so he expects them to get punished for it—And he’s rightfully baffled at The Director’s refusal to do so.

When York shows up for the heist, Wash makes a point to approach Carolina about it. He understands that she doesn’t want to appear weak and unsure of herself in front of The Director, and that she doesn’t want to give her teammates any more reasons to dislike her than they already do. By approaching her first, he’s able to give her an out if she chooses to do so—And if she had agreed York wasn’t ready, then it’s Wash who York can blame for it.

Wash recognized almost immediately that Tex was going to get the brunt of the team's anger and outrage over York’s injury, and he makes sure to let everyone know that she likely kept him from getting killed. He also recognized that she was being set up to be excluded from the rest of the team, so the very first thing he did when he got a moment alone with her was reach out by making friendly small talk, trying to establish a connection so that Tex could use him as an entry into the team's inner dynamic. 

Now going back to the blurb I opened this post with, I ask these questions:

What would Wash—As someone who sees himself as one part of a bigger whole—Be willing to do in order to appease the people around him? What actions would he take to try and lower the mental burden that such a competitive and inherently hostile environment would put upon his teammates?

The answer? I think Ct puts it very well with this line:

“Some of us very specifically make mistakes, and some of us don’t seem to make any mistakes at all.” 

This line is meant to be seen as half Ct calling Wash out on his bullshit, and half her being genuinely upset over Carolina’s status as ‘Ms. Perfect’, because in Ct’s mind, Wash and Carolina are very much two sides of the same coin; Intentionally making mistakes that don’t get you or your teammates killed requires the same level of skill and attention to detail that it would take to avoid making any mistakes in the first place. This is why Wash’s talk about them being a team makes her so angry, and why she sees it as him trying to make excuses for her: There are no excuses for fucking up when you work with people who have to intentionally choose to make the same mistakes that you unintentionally do. 

uuuhhhhh idk how to end this post but I really love looking at Wash through this lens because it speaks volumes about him, and it adds so much more complexity and nuance to his already incredibly layered character.

okay but hear me out: do you think Leif did so well with his daughters because he idolized his mom and adored daphne but jay reminded him too much of his dad and so his resentment and him finally being the one with power in the relationship took over??? like they even sorta named the kid after journey and leif & journey KINDA made up but he never actually really dealt with the impact his dad's alcoholism had on his childhood.

first of all. i love you 😭💖👏🏽 And the short answer is yes! Now, the long answer...

I mean, it's never been a secret that Leif enjoys the company of women. Growing up in a household with two men after losing his mom, it makes some sense. Now, the two most important women in his life have been Lindsay and Daphne, both much more mature than him, who dedicated themselves to taking care of him. Can you see that? Because I see some mommy issues there 🤣🤣 Leif's weakness extends to his daughters, being permissive and understanding.

Now, about "fixing" things with Journey… I guess Leif could never fully forgive him for the alcoholism thing, and Journey knew it, but no matter how many apologies were made, the past couldn't be erased. They both agreed to leave it behind for the sake of the entire family.

As for Jay, he not only reminds Leif of Journey but also of himself. We all saw how difficult it was for Leif to decide to leave college, to fight with his dad during that time in his youth when he didn't know exactly what to do with his life until he took the big step to become a freelance artist. A part of him doesn't want Jay to go through all that and have his dreams crushed, especially since being a musician might be even harder than being an artist. The problem with Leif is that he won't put in enough effort to truly UNDERSTAND Jay. He said no, Jay said yes, and from there it all went downhill lol. It didn't help at all that Jay chose Miracle as his life partner because Leif and Lindsay… yeah, not good. Another person he has hurt and has never apologized to.

In essence, Leif has always lived in a bubble where he's the center of attention, and anything that doesn't go his way, he simply brushes aside. The problem is, now that he's lived long enough, he's realizing that all his decisions have only served to push away the people he cares about. Especially because his fight with Jay somehow affected Daphne and the girls, given that he simply disappeared from everyone's life. But even so, I'm not sure if he knows how to take the step and say "I'm sorry"

#I'm not saying his actions are justified but those following the legacy from the beginning know he has his reasons #Good reasons? Bad reasons? I guess it depends #I like to keep my characters in shades of gray; no one is 100% good or 100% bad. It all depends on perspectives #take Jay for example. I think it's wrong that he disappeared from his entire family's life just because he had some problems with Leif #And now he's moving on as if nothing happened. Heather is a lesbian. Let me explain:

In the first season, Heather isn't shown to have ANY attraction to anyone, not even Justin, who at the point hadn't revealed his malicious side, giving Heather no reason to not find him attractive. Even more so the only times she's flirty is faked, for example stealing the map from Duncan, or kissing Trent to get him eliminated. Heather's behavior towards Lindsay gets worse when Lindsay starts dating Tyler, making it seem like maybe Heather was jealous of Tyler. Heather is also shown next to Leshawna, her so called enemy. No one forced them to always be next to each other, so why we're they? Secret crush. Another hheiry I have is that Heather was mean to Leshawna because she's everything Heather hates about herself. Leshawna is a plus size woman of color and isn't ashamed. In season two it's revealed Heather used to be like that, meaning Heather may be going through the typical sapphic experience of "do I want to be her, or do I want her?" And if you argue that Heather is attracted to Alejandro is season three, when you look closer she's more attracted to his status and power, rather than him, himself. Also in multiple scenes in World Tour Heather had romantic tension with the other members of Team Amazon (Courtney and Sierra). For example the "girlfriends are forever" scene with Sierra, and chin holds, physical affection with Courtney. I think its safe to say that even if Heather isnt lesbian, shes definitely a bit into girls.

No but for real, I used to have this exact headcanon. And then I had an epiphany; Heather shows little-to-no attraction to anyone throughout the show because she's somewhere under the asexual umbrella. Yes that's just yet another case of me blasting my favourite characters with the aspec beam, what about it?
