A/N: ahhh!! thank you for this!! i hope you enjoy it !! ive never really written nebula before and im not sure if i captured her very well but i tried !! feel free to send in more if you want ! :)

for anyone wondering this is for this tiny drabble event (does it count as an event? idk im calling it that because anon did and it amkes it sound COOL) that im doing!

"What is all of this…" Nebula asks, looking at you with squinted eyes. You smile at her with a little shrug and hold up a present.

"It's for you! Happy birthday!" You say slightly bouncing up and down. She grabs the present from you and rips the wrapping off of it easily, looking down at the small gift. She takes a deep breath and looks back at you, her eyes a bit misty.

"You did this all for… for me?" She asks, looking around at the decorated room and the table with food on it. She pulls the gift closer to her chest and she seems conflicted, not knowing how to react.

"Of course! I know it's technically not your birthday since we don't actually know when it is, but I just… I just thought you deserve it!" You say, suddenly feeling a bit self-conscious. Nebula puts down the present and pulls you into a hug, without saying a word. You gasp and hug her back, smiling softly. She pulls back and looks into your eyes.

"I-" She says, unsure how to finish that sentence. She grumbles under her breath and shakes her head, turning away. She grabs the gift again and tries not to cry. "Thank you."

"Of course, Neb…" You say, walking up and wrapping your arm around her. "I love you."

"And I You."

Gunn said the first movie was about the mother, the second about the father and the third about the self. And if I think about it, all characters finally come to terms to who they really are or want to be:

[SPOILERS]

• Mantis goes her own way, after following what Ego wanted and then what the Guardians wanted for all these years;

• Drax, that called himself the 'destroyer', finds his place as a 'father', even after his daughter's death;

• Groot: now that he is an adult again, it's pretty clear to us that he's phisically and mentally different from the GOTG1!Groot. He respects and supports everyone's choices in his family and makes us part of it too at the end (→ now we understand him too);

• Nebula, now free from Thanos, is now a leader and helps kids in need like she was as a child, following what she and Gamora talked about at the end of vol 2;

• Gamora learns why her 2018!self found a family between the Guardians, but feels she's different and chooses another path in the end;

• Rocket "ain't no one like me but me" accepts he's not alone in the world anymore and deserves to keep on living. Also, he calls himself "racoon" for the first time without it being a offense for him;

• Peter, always away from his planet, faces his fears and comes back to the Earth, where he lost his mother, and meets his granddad.

I don't like all the choices Gunn made in this movie (about Gamora's arc for example), but GOTG3 made me cry and laught and cry again and I'm happy we finally got to see the ending of this beautiful trilogy.

So going back and watching all previous Guardians of the Galaxy media, I finally realized why Nebula looked so different in GotGv3 and I can’t believe I didn’t clock it immediately.

The hardware around her eye is gone. When she said Rocket had given her some upgrades she meant more than just her new arm. He gave her the opportunity to be more like her old self before the Thanos modifications. Removing that implant allows her to be more emotive and I think that’s beautiful.

I also noticed that when her limbs all snap back into place she doesn’t seem to experience the level of pain and discomfort she did before. I like to think that’s also thanks to Rocket’s upgrades. I love their relationship so much. 🥹
