AND another thing.

Since Syren established that Kim cares about people's feelings now, even if he's still not the best with social cues and thinking before he speaks/acts ("I think she was trying to tell me that I'm the boy she likes. But I was a doofus and didn't realise."), so wouldn't it make more sense for him to be akumatisd because he's feeling guilty about what he did?

He can see Marinette's upset, and he can piece together from her reaction and the added context he has that the reason she's reacting like this is because of the trick he pulled on her (as shown in the episode). Since he's friendly with Marinette now (shown in Dark Cupid, somewhat ironically), he feels guilty that he's hurt his friend like this.

Then there are a few potential routes:

A) He goes to Marinette to apologise, but she tells him to piss off (maybe because she's in the throes of a panic attack, maybe because she's justifiably angry at him), which makes him feel worse and opens him up to akumatisation. The akuma here would probably be different, since what he wants here is for Marinette to feel better and forgive him. Moral: you can't make someone forgive you, and you can't just make the pain you caused someone disappear.

B) He shifts the blame onto Chloe, since it was her idea, and he wasn't trying to hurt Marinette, he thought she'd find it funny (personally I'd have it as him just trying to make himself feel better, but you can have him genuinely believe it if you want). Again, the akuma would be different, since here he doesn't want to be blamed for the trick/how it affected Marinette. Moral: it being someone else's idea doesn't absolve you of responsibility. [Disclaimer: not sure this is very in character for Kim, as I don't recall him acting this way at any point in the show.]

C, if you want to stick with Dark Humour) He's in denial about how he hurt Marinette. He says it was supposed to be funny, she's overreacting and needs to learn to take a joke, but without any real conviction. When Monarch akumatises him, he says that he agrees with Kim, people need to learn to take a joke (because emotional manipulation is his whole schtick). Kim is relieved to have someone tell him he hasn't done anything wrong (no-one wants to be responsible for hurting their friend like that), and becomes Dark Humour. (The key difference is Monarch manipulating him into thinking he's in the right, not him thinking that way from the beginning.) Here Kim's underlying guilt plays into his defeat, causing him to resist Monarch somewhat, enough for the heroes to get the upper hand. Moral: you can't just run away from your actions. The best thing you can do is own up, fix the damage if you can, and try to be better.

Bonus: it actually shows Kim as a bully character who changed his ways and feels remorse for how he used to be, contrasting him with what Astruc has decided to with Chloe. (As opposed to them throwing in one line about him promising to change at the end.)

"I'm going to start this off by saying that the creator of the show pretty much confirmed all of the gems are neurodivergent, since they're aliens and don't think and act like humans. Peridot is who I'm nominating since I believe she's one of the most relatable gems to a lot of autistic people (including myself) Okay, so she's pretty bad with communicating with others, especially early on in the series. When trying to apologize to Amethyst, she records herself with her voice recorder (which is also shown to be a big comfort to her) and plays that recording for Amethyst instead of speaking directly to her She is extremely literal, not understanding human phrases and jokes (ex: Steven: Oh peridot, you're killing me! Peridot: I am not! That would violate our truce agreement!) She says things and doesn't understand why those things were upsetting for other characters, such as when she was pointing out how Amethyst is smaller than she's supposed to be. She found this funny and thought Amethyst would too, but Amethyst was upset since she's insecure about being "wrong", and Peridot didn't realize what she said was upsetting to Amethyst She makes up words and phrases for things so they make sense to her (ex: calling fingers "touch-stumps") She repeats the word "clod" a lot, possibly as a stim She gets a tablet later on in the series and is very excited since it reminds her of her old tech. She attaches it to her arm with a velcro strap, and spends a lot of the episode on the tablet. I believe technology is one of her special interests, and the tablet is a comfort item. In that episode Amethyst takes the tablet and tries to throw it in the ocean, causing Peridot to get very upset, yell "It's all that I am!", and activate her new metal powers (she's able to levitate metal, allowing her to save her tablet) She may also have a special interest in a show called "Camp Pining Hearts", as she's shown spending a large amount of time watching it by herself and with Lapis Lazuli. In Steven Universe Future, there's a remake of the show and she is very excited to watch it with Steven, but she doesn't like it. They spend the episode trying to change it to be better with Steven's dream powers, until Peridot realizes it's stressing out Steven and making him afraid of her leaving if he can't make it right I'm positive I'm missing things, but I think this is long enough already lol"

If you feel up to explaining, could I please ask why you ship Tech and Phee?

The flirting and interactions between them seemed so out-of-character for Tech, and like Disney is trying to force a romance just because there always needs to be a romance in a Disney show/film. It also feels as if Disney chose Tech to be the one to have a potential romance because :

1.) The 'awkwardness' of flirting is amusing or considered 'cute' to viewers as if it's 'funny/cute' to watch someone who doesn't understand social cues or needs time to adjust to interactions be thrown for a loop or react in a different way than what is socially expected thus Disney can have more chances to add this 'lightheartedness/humour' when it's really not,

2.) They are trying to follow the same line that they do in most of their films with the one person the team who is considered the 'nerd/geek' to 'get the girl' instead of actually giving any character(s) who would be a better match for the 'girl' thus continuing their line of overused tropes that more so appeal to the masses of heterosexual neurotypical viewers.

I don't mean this as hate or anything, I'm just trying to figure out how those who ship it, see it. I seek to understand, not judge or cause discourse. And have added my opinion one the matter to simply give my viewpoint. I'm not attempting to change or alter your views, just to hear another's perspective on it, if you're willing to give it.

this does actually really bother me, and i wasn’t gonna answer, but i went to sleep annoyed about it last night and woke up annoyed about it still

mostly this bothers me bc it was entirely unsolicited. like if this had been phrased maybe as a “what’s the thing that you like most about tech and phee together?” or “what made you start to ship tech and phee” i’d probably be less annoyed, but, even though you claim to not be trying to change anyone’s mind here and to only understand, this ask is basically you coming to my inbox and saying “this makes no sense. here’s why it doesn't make sense (and why i actually think it’s at least lightly problematic in my point #1, but i’m gonna continue writing as if that doesn't count as causing discourse) and now i want you to defend your position of shipping two entirely fictional characters who have a legitimately canon romance subplot going”

do you see why that would bother me?

like if you don’t like tech and phee together, and don’t like that i like tech and phee together, that’s fine. block the tag (i think i’ve settled on using techphee as their tag for now) or just unfollow me, but like. don’t come into what is basically my house and very passive aggressively ask that i explain and defend the decor i’ve chosen to decorate it with

i don’t really agree with your points either. i don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong with adding romance to shows, because people generally like seeing it and it’s a thing a lot of people experience. i thought it was kind of nice here, actually, because i wasn’t expecting it. as far as i remember, the only clone we’ve really seen with a partner is Cut, who was pretty explicitly shown to have a lot of different values than the other clones due to the fact that he deserted from the GAR, and his arc was a lot about the morality of the clones not being given a choice as to who they are, if they can love, if they can do something and live a life outside of the war they were bred for. the war is over now, it makes sense that the clones might start to find partners or people to maybe want to half settle down with, and it’s a good way to reestablish that the clones that have defected from the empire—while in danger bc of their status as traitors—have a greater sense of their own agency and different priorities than they did before the clone wars ended. they have the freedom to maybe try and live a life now, and for a lot of people, there’s a good chance that might constitute having a partner. romance for a clone is a rather revolutionary idea in universe. it’s not something they would have been allowed before

as for tech specifically, i don’t necessarily think it’s out of character for him to start develop some amount of feelings for someone who has been interested in him from the start, who has a decently wide wealth of knowledge given all the artifacts she knows so much about (and what cultures they come from!), and who has a great backstory of being a caring pirate who goes on these adventures at least in part to give items of little monetary value back to the people they have great sentimental value for after they’ve had to become refugees. she also obviously cares about the bad batch, given she brought them all to her hidden slice of paradise despite the fact she knows they’re all very much wanted people who could very easily bring real trouble given the empire is after them, and she obviously likes listening to tech talk and likes his personality when even his brothers have made fun of the way he tends to ramble (like in the bad batch/ rescuing echo arc of the clone wars). and tech doesn’t seem to mind the attention, given the small smiles he sends her way literally the entire pabu episode, even waiting back a bit to talk to her when she went to drop the artifact off when the rest of the batch had moved forward. at the very least, he seems intrigued by her (as he should be!!!! she’s cool and interesting as hell!!!!)

their interactions are rather soft and sweet, i think. phee’s flirting, sure, and she’s been pretty obvious about it from the get go, but she’s not bulldozing past any boundaries here. their interactions in this episode, especially, made it seem like they’re just in some beginning stages, but they genuinely seem to be pretty comfortable in each other’s company, given the two of them stuck together while making rounds, or their interactions at shep’s dinner table. it’s soft, it’s sweet, it’s slow, but tech’s small smiles whenever she flirts with him are showing that he does understand these particular social cues when she flirts with him, and he’s reciprocating to a degree. perhaps their first interactions aside, i don’t think tech really was ever unaware that she was flirting, it was more just surprise she was flirting with him

which brings me to your #2 point. if there was gonna be a romance subplot (which, again, i wasn’t expecting, just due to the nature of the stories of the clones), i 100% didn’t think it was going to be with tech. there are a decent amount of tech girlies, sure, and some fans find him attractive, but i absolutely would have expected that subplot to go to hunter for lots of reasons, including that he’s the most conventionally attractive and classically handsome of the bad batch with the long hair and the tall dark and handsome thing going, he’s generally the leader of the batch and the leader is usually the one that gets the girl, and he’s the most generally accepted “dad” figure to omega (while the others are more much older brother/uncle types) which means a romance subplot would have also given omega another parental figure which is a very common trope (single dad meets perfect step mom kind of thing). i’ve seen others express this same opinion since the episode aired (surprise at tech getting to have the romance rather than hunter). i also don’t know who you think of the batch is the “better match” for phee, bc i don’t think any of them would match better than tech. both of them are very passionate people with an obvious thirst for knowledge. wrecker’s great, but i don’t see a match there at all, and i don’t think hunter’s personality lends itself to a romance with phee specifically, because they don't really seem to have any common interests there and phee doesn't seem interested in being a parental figure to omega but more of a cool aunt type, even if i think his personality would lend itself to a romance if that was something he personally wanted.

tldr: i like the romance subplot here specifically bc it is more than just a typical thrown in thing like it would be for every other show because this show is about clones in a post clone war galaxy, i think tech and phee are actually fairly well matched, and i don’t really appreciate someone coming into my ask box to tell me that the (canon!!!) ship i found cute is bad and out of character, actually, under the guise of wanting to understand my viewpoint

Rambling about Berror because he's a little guy and we need to give him more love 💥

RAAAAH WE DO NEED TO GIVE HIM MORE LOVE ‼️‼️

Unfortunately there's not much within the canon to ramble about.. mainly because we never really got anything about him BUT I have done some research (I read like 4 fics about him) and have come to the conclusion that he is the silly he is the little guy he is possibly the angstiest possible being ever and he is UNDERRATED.

SO we know that a lot of the Errors/glitches' (whatever you wanna call 'em) personality is based on their final thoughts before they corrupt which wow okay already a ton of potential just in general like not even limited to Blueberror that could be such a fun little thing to mess around with ??? Anyway I think that specifically for Blueberror it could be especially fucking great because that essentially means that any form of Blueberror is canon. It doesn't matter how you portray him because in one way or another it can be considered canon and nobody can argue against it.

Oh, Blue was upset and/or angry at Error before he corrupted? Make him mad at Error and anyone else like him, extend it to anyone who threatens the Multiverse and BAM you've got protector Blueberror. Or you could take it the other way and make it so Blueberror is upset at EVERYONE because nobody came to save him leading to him being a loner with tendencies of speaking to random people but then switching up and getting angry at whoever he's speaking to.

Oh his last thoughts were about his friends and the people he's lost?? Make it so he's obsessed with making friends and fitting in. Make it so all he wants is to have a friend group who'd accept him. Make it so that he struggles to completely understand social cues and people around him find him weird and unsettling because of it. Make it so he struggles to fit in and gets upset at himself over it, trying his hardest to change himself but giving up every time because he always gets sidetracked whenever he tries.

Building on that friend group part, make it so that Blueberror just ends up joining Nightmare's Gang because of his intense focus on friendship, willing to let others die for him to have what he wants. Let him befriend the members of Nightmare's Gang and let him be warped by their humour and their actions whilst remaining optimistic and unstable.

Another path is for him to not want to be friends with people who already have friends, feeling overwhelming jealousy every time he sees one of his friends talking to someone else. Have him be insane about Error specifically because yes, he's a loner, but Error was also the cause of everything that happened to him. Have him be constantly struggling with his thoughts about Error and not knowing what to think about him or if he even wants to be friends with him.

Have him hang around with Dream because Dream's aura makes his emotions stable, but have Dream be unsure if he's okay with Blueberror acting like he does because he wants him to be able to figure out his own emotions and how to deal with them without wanting to see his friend suffer. Have Dream struggle to learn how to use technology or read or write and have Blueberror be ecstatic over being helpful with it, feeling happy that he's finally found a friend despite him acting more as a tutor than anything else.

Have him be completely unaware of the fact that people don't want to be his friend. He's too engrossed in his mission of befriending people to realise that some people don't want to be friends, and when he does realise this he gets upset and loses his temper because, well, what's wrong with him?? Why don't they want to be friends with him?? What did he do wrong??

Dial that shit up to eleven and have him be pissed over the fact that certain people don't want to be friends with each other, have him be completely incapable of understanding it. Have him not understand why people can't get over things that happened in the past whilst also having him be a hypocrite who'll hold grudges for the rest of his life if he wants to.

Have him be so unstable that he's capable of attacking other people when he gets upset, similarly to Error, which leads to people having an actual reason to be scared of him and trying to keep away from him but that just sends him further into a frenzy.

Just have him trying his hardest to be a good guy but struggling so much with understanding what's going on that it makes him into a bad guy accidentally. That's all I want from this fandom.

Casey had been lounging around the lair for a while, she tried her best to connect with everyone but seemed to overwhelm people and she herself got overwhelmed with these new emotions, sights and just things she didn't generally understand like hugs from Mikey or humour from Leo or just social cues in general.She eventually went be alone, there was no one near the train tracks so she just sat behind one of the train cars, hugging her knees to her chest. After a while she heard heavy footsteps nearing her, she looked up and saw Raphael peering over her.

"Hey Casey, what are you doing back here" asked Raph which prompted Casey to panic.

"Uhh, Im just..CHECKING FOR BUGS!"she exclaimed but Raph bought none of it.

"Casey-" he said in a worried tone but was then cut off by Casey.

"NOTHING MAKES SENSE"yelled Cassandra.

Raph was a little taken a back and then raised his finger as he was about to speak.

"I DON'T GET ALL OF THIS TOGETGERNESS OR YOU ALL' KINDNESS OR ANY OF THE STUPID LITTLE THINGS THE BLUE ONE SAYS, I'M TRYING TO FIT IN HERE BUT I JUST FEEL SO OVERWHELMED BY THESE TRIVIAL NEW THINGS" yelled Cassandra.Cassandra then sighed and put her head in her knees.

Raphael scratched his head "Raph doesn't fully understans how to deal with that, I mean, you shouldn't feel ashamed of not fitting in"said Raph.

"I guess, but I still wish I could take it all in better somehow, I'm still getting used to the fact that you all think I'm even good enough to be here, especially April, She really has faith in me" said Casey.Raph nodded and put a hand on her shoulder. A light bulb popped in his head.

"LIGHT BULB" yelled Raph.

"Huh-" muttered Cassandra before she pulled into Raph's lap.

"HEY!WHAT THE HEEHEHEHELL"shrieked Casey.

"You seemed stressed, Raph knows how to deal with stress."Raph said digging his fingers in Cassandra'a sides.

Cassandra had only been tickled once before, she attacked by April and Sunita on a "Girls Night"TM. There she learned what it was, that one of her death spots was her sides and even learned that she may or may not enjoy it. She would never admit that though.

She pushed and kicked in Raph's grasp but the alligator snapping turtle kept a good grip as he scribbled, squeezed ans prodded. All she could do at this point it let herself laugh.Raph snickered, he could sense she was having fun. She then accidentally kicked Raph in face.

"OW! YOU'RE GETTING IT NOW" yelled Raph as he blew raspberries in her sides.

Cassandra squealed and threw her head back.She eventually patted Raph on the shoulder signifying she was ready for him to stop now, and which he did.

"That was adorable"said Leo and Mikey who had apparently came to see what the ruckus was all about

"SHUT UP" barked Casey.

"Oh but it really was" said April, coming from behind Leo.

Cassandra blushed deeper at April's remark.

Leo, Mikey and April walked off, April winking as she walked away.

"WHATEVER" yelled back Casey, she then looked at Raph and worded "Thank you".

me and seán are the perfect couple because we're both adhd and both autistic but in like a different way so we're autism rizzing each OTHER

we're like twins because we have so much in common but at the same time we're opposites, like- our personalities click together and we have the same sense of humour and agree on important things, but our interests and the ways we express outselves are sososo different.

and even though if u put our personality traits on a list some of them would be the same, even those are life, executed differently. Seán is funny but in a different way than me- we like the same jokes but talk different and think of different things so he'll come up with a joke i didn't think about and it makes me laugh. He's loud but in a different way than me (sometimes he gets scared and he has to warm up socially like ice into water before he starts screaming. i walk in already all capital letters).

we're like,,, the best of both worlds. the same but also different.

Most of you do characters analysis from the neurotypical point of view and let me tell how much you absolutely SHOULD NOT!

Do you look at the characters in Bleach and think there's anything neurotypical about them?

The Shinigami are always going to be a bit sociopathic either you want it or not. How the hell do you live for centuries or even millennia if you allow yourself to care about everything and everyone? Especially about the frail humans that rarely reach one century of life?

Not all of them are the same, (Ukitake remains extremely caring for a Shinigami who's lived as long as he did) but it's there.

And if they change, getting imbued with some humanity they did not possess, it's because of Ichigo.

Then comes the trauma, the PTSD, which about 99% of the characters either have or develop...

Byakuya for example, is on the autistic spectrum... Too literal, social cues are iffy, doesn't get most humour, but thinks he's hilarious.

Aizen is narcissistic and manipulative.

Mayuri is a psychopath and even more narcissistic than Aizen.

They're a fucking mess.

November wrap-up

I'm actually posting this somewhat on time this month. This might have something to do with me being too tired & sick to focus on actually reading right now. This might also mean that the reviews are even more unhinged than normal, or maybe that they're just utterly incomprehensible. We'll see.

I don't think I trust neurotypical people's reviews of this. Everyone was saying the 18yo protagonist seemed childish & naive but as someone around that age, who thinks a similar way, I think they're just unfamiliar with reading a character who doesn't understand social cues/situations. The mystery was pretty good, I was invested. Characters were actually brilliant. Loved it all. Tabbed a lot of quotes on being trans & autistic. Thought that was well done.

A Prayer For the Crown-Shy- Becky Chambers- 17/11/22- 10/10

Didn't enjoy this as much as APFTWB, but it still felt kinda enlightening in its own way. Funny moments with Mosscap always rule. Would love to read more about these 2.

Why I headcanon these criminal minds characters as autistic

Reid:

He is considered a genius due to his high IQ and more than a third of autistic people have above average IQs

He doesn't understand humour or sarcasm

He has a photographic memory

He has an atypical way of speaking, he puts intonations in weird places, especially at the en of his phrases, and he speaks very fast

He sees patterns easily

In multiple episodes he stands or walks with his wrist limp against his chest witch is referred to as the t-rex pose and is very common in autistic people

He also runs strangely and has an abnormal posture when standing witch are both autistic traits

Local police always look at him like he's a weirdo or a freak genius and denote his oddness to Hotch. They do not understand him cause his way of speaking, walking, acting is atypical

He had a drug addiction witch a lot of autistic people do, due to the fact it lowers our sensory issues and slows our thoughts

He doesn't drive and a lot of autistic people don't have permit cause they have drivers anxiety

Garcia

She wears heals all the time witch is a form of tiptoe walking and that's an autistic trait

She understands computers and numbers better than people

She fidgets a lot with her pens

She has so many stim toys on her desk and in her drawers

Just like Reid, local police and sometimes her own team usually joke about her oddness because she doesn't understand social cues and just says what she's thinking like flirting with Derek in front of everyone and cracking jokes in the middle of a case

She overshares constantly

She speaks very fast and also rambles when she's talking about things relating to computers, witch is her special interest

She keep her office very dark, so she probably has sensitivity to light

She's shown as being hypersensitive as she's the one that cries the most on the team and is affected by graphic pictures

Hotch

Has one facial expression

Also seems to only exhibit three emotions witch are anger, neutral, and very happy

Has a very monotone and flat tone

Has a walk and posture very stiff and robot-like

He wear the exact same thing everyday. Yes there's probably an overall dress code but we see the team wear different things whereas he's always wearing a suit. Either because of routine or because it's his comfort clothes

He is very blunt

His job is so important to him that he chose it over his wife cause she couldn't respect that it was THAT important to him. I think profiling is his special interest

Emily

Shes super good at learning languages and I think languages might be a special interest of hers

She is very good at acting witch is a form of masking. She kept her role of Lauren for years and she also acts very differently during questioning when it's needed

Again, she also has a very monotone way of speaking

She is very similar to Hotch in a lot of ways and understands him and communicates with him easily. If you consider Hotch autistic this is a big sign that she is as well, as autistic people usually get along well with each other especially when we have the same "flavour" of autism

In the beginning she tries VERY hard to be accepted by the team and to socialize with them witch a lot of autistic people "try too hard" to do as well since we know people don't usually like us or the way we interact with them so we overcompensate

She is very secretive and doesn't trust others that much. She relies on herself for everything. Of course this can be because of her trauma but it is also something a lot of autistic people do because we learn quickly that others can't be relied on to help us

She is way more logical and rational than emotional. When she comes back form faking her death she immediately goes back to work without crying or being upset

Rossi

He has a same food, carbonara pasta

He's also very strict about rules and the process of making food

He has trouble working with others, he works best alone with his thoughts. He had trouble adapting to the gang when he first arrived

He also has trouble with relationships in general as we know he's had 3 failed marriages

He always seems confused about what's going on with people especially in the earlier seasons and asks Hotch to explain to him

He only gets comfortable with the team when his social role gets very specific and easy to understand. When he starts acting like a mentor and father figure to the group, it gets easier for him to form close relationships with them, because he understands his role perfectly

Also along those lines, he's super surprised when Hotch asks him to come coach his sons soccer team. I think it's because he never realized they were friends as he understood their relationship to be coworkers. After that episode they are shown to be way closer as Rossi now feel comfortable acting friendlier since he knows for a fact they are friends and not just coworkers

Blake

She got along with Reid instantly and understood him better than everyone, and again autistic people get along very well usually, especially when they have the same "flavour" of autism

She also clocked him from the start witch I did for all my autistic friends and asked him if he had asperger's (very outdated term but it's the one she uses in the show)

She doesn't show a lot of emotions on her face even though she seems to be feeling them

She is very reserved and doesn't share a lot about herself or try to connect to the team (appart from Reid)

She has been away from her husband for multiple months at a time for years and even tho she eventually decides to take another job to be closer to him, she still could tolerate it for all these years. Autistic people need a lot of time alone and usually miss our loved ones way less then allistic people

She got her PHD at 22 and got recruited by the FBI at 24. Again a lot of autistic people tend to have high IQs and do good in school

She knows so much about language and speak a lot of them. It's probably her special interest

Why I believe Octavian could be on the autism spectrum

I don’t think Octavian was given these traits with autism in mind, but that doesn’t change how I see them.

One thing I do know is that Octavian is a sore point for a lot of people who struggle with mental and physical illness - much as he is for me. The way Riordan treats him in the text is extremely hurtful.

So, onto my arguments.

Social Cues and Facial Expressions

All in all, I believe Octavian is terrible at both “reading the room” and picking up social cues. His relationship with Reyna is all over the place and more often than not, it's Octavian who's trying to bridge them gap between them.

He doesn't seem to realise that she hates him now.

He also consistently fails to use the correct facial expression. He is often decribed as having a “cruel” look or having “madness” in his eyes. His smiles never come off as genuine.

He feels off to people, even when he is being completely honest. And the characters make a lot of assumptions about his intentions based on this.

A very notable example:

Frank scanned the crowd for Octavian. The centurion was watching with more interest than concern, as if he were examining one of his stupid gutted teddy bears.

As we can see, in a high-stress situation, Octavian fails to show the 'correct' expression. And for that, Frank accuses him of murder!

Special Interest

This is probably the most obviously autistic trait of Octavian. He is described as being “obsessed” with the Sibylline books and consistantly displays an active interest in them. Of the limited characterisation we get of Octavian, that is most consistent - and one of the only one’s we see directly, rather than something we hear by rumour.

It frustrates me to this day how people treat Octavian regarding the Sibylline books. Hazel mocks him for it. Percy assumes Octavian will literally hurt Ella because she has memorised them. The kid just wants to tell about this really cool thing, guys, stop hating on him.

Masking

There is argument that Octavian’s ability to speak is inconsistent, but I disagree. Octavian thrives in situations where he can effectively use a “script”. These can be as small as one liners “Possibly my namesake, Octavian - Augustus Caesar. Everyone says I bear a remarkable resemblance”.

Yet, outside of the Senate and other places were he could have predicated and practiced his words, he falls short. He gets lost in the conversation. He gets mocks and he has no recourse.

I also think this is why he upholds the “Roman” way so strictly. They have defined rules that he can follow, allowing him to mask as best he can.

Another, specific example, is when he tries to tell a joke. When we first meet him he says, “The message said: the greek has arrived. Or possibly: the goose has cried. I’m thinking the first interpretation is correct.” Like, if that’s not an attempt at self-depicating humour I don’t know what it. And neither Percy nor Hazel pick it up at all.

Basically with Octavian the words are there, but the delivery isn’t. Which is where he gets tangled.

Caring about fairness

Octavian hates that Percy becomes praetor in less than a week. This is presented as him hating Percy because he’s a Greek - but it could be argued that Octavian sees it as fundamentally unfair. Praetors, traditionally, earn their rank after years of self-sacrifice, training, and leadership. Percy has done none of that.

The same can be said about Frank’s promotion to centurion. Especially because Frank’s promotion is explicitly (divine) nepotism.

Coping Mechanisms

Octavian spends his time at the Temple of Jupiter, seemingly, so he can be away from people.

Red flashes of lightning washed the monuments in blood-coloured light. "Octavian is busy," Hazel said.

Basically - Octavian sets up a big signal for the world to let everyone know "I'm busy, don't bother me".

And the fact that everyone knows he’s going to be at the Temple and not his Cohort's barracks means he probably spends a lot of time there. Despite the fact he can perform auguries anywhere. It doesn’t need to be at the Temple of Jupiter.

These are the few hours each day he isn’t surrounded by other people - it’s his only time where he can unmask.

The Teddy Bears

I admit, it doesn’t seem like he cares for the toys on the outset. But…why not have your evil character kill actual animals? Why sanitise that when a few chapters later Frank tells Percy he could die in the training. They don’t even use training gear, they fight with Imperial gold! A girl dies in front of them!

Riordan made this choice, it seems, to add a comical element to Octavian's character. It makes him easy to mock. Why? Because teddy bears aren’t age appropriate. And several characters dismiss him or make jabs at him regarding this.

Of course, that's a meta answer to "why" Octavian has them. Why he doesn't use real animals.

But what about an in-universe reason.

One thing a lot of people have called out about the title "augur" is that it's a position that means someone who divines the future via the movement of birds. Octavian, instead, acts as a haruspex. This disconnect between titles isn't easily explained (in-universe) expect that perhaps Octavian has admitted the role of augur to suit himself and his experiences.

Perhaps it is a good reason to carrying around his comfort animals. Yes, he gets mocked for having them still, but it's justified in a way that it wouldn't be if they weren't "tools of the trade".

And we see Octavian using the bears for comfort in the story. Here are a few examples where I think Octavian is using his teddy bear to (try to) regulate this emotions.

Octavian shot to his feet. "You need to ask?" His face was red with rage. He was strangling his teddy bear.

and here:

Octavian gripped one of his teddy bears, strangling it with shaking hands. His eyes fixed on Ella. "What was that she said? It sounded like-”

“I, uh…” Octavian dropped his teddy bear. “No, but-”

We can see that Octavian often clings to his stuffed animals, especially when he's feeling emotional.

Octavian’s Empathy

Octavian cares deeply about New Rome and it’s people. That much is clear from his anger at seeing it attacked. I guarantee people were injured in that attack, too many bolts were fired.

Beyond that, he also refuses to let any Roman die on his watch.

But that's the expected stuff. Octavian is loyal to his friends and family. Not a surprise (I hope).

But his empathy doesn't end there. He is also one of the only demigods to consistently see monsters as people. He gives them positions of rank and respect, once he has the ability, and is horrified when Nico slays some in front of him.

Emotional Regulation

On thing about masking all the time is that your emotions get buried. Octavian has moments where he loses control - and that comes out in big emotions. Either he comes off as heartless or he's "losing" it. Much of the end sequence in Blood of Olympus involves Octavian have a huge mental breakdown. And it's what makes his death even more tragic.

One final note

We get told a lot about Octavian by Hazel and Frank, even Reyna, but a lot of what we are told misaligns with what we see. It’s the classic show-versus-tell.

We are told he pays his friends, but who? We don’t know.

We get told people hate/fear him, but who? We don’t know.

We get told that he has bought his votes, but did he? The fact of the matter is Octavian has no true rival until Percy. He simply didn't need to.

The people we hear this stuff from either have a vested interest in pushing Octavian down or they dislike him and are willingly to believe the worse about him.

So, basically, I think Octavian fits in the category of autism. Even his position within Camp Jupiter is a metaphor for an autistic experience. He is both one of the legion and completely seperated from that. He is the only augur at the camp. He's different, isolated, and ignored.

As a young reader

When I was younger, a part of me looked up to Octavian.

Despite all his weaknesses, Octavian had found success in his life. He has been recognised by his society (as shown by his medals and rank) - and that gave young me a lot of hope. I looked up to him (as weird as that sounds).

I refused to accept his death for a long time due to these feelings. Which is one of the reasons why I still think about this character all these years later.

Now, as an adult, I feel even more sympathy for him, because I’ve been through depression, anxiety, burnout, and betrayal. I just wish Octavian was given a better ending than he did.
