The Mediterranean diet is a heart-healthy eating plan utilising ingredients and recipes from Mediterranean countries such as Italy, France, Spain & Greece. The Mediterranean diet includes fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, whole grains and other healthy foods along with olive oils & wine. The lack of processed ingredients, unhealthy fats and artificial additives mean that following this diet could dramatically decrease your chances of heart disease. So is the Mediterranean diet healthy? In a word, Yes. Some eating plans carry a list of pros and cons but there really is not anything negative to say about the Mediterranean diet. If you like fresh, wholesome food then this is certainly the diet for you. Read on to find out more... The benefits of the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet has been found to lower our level of oxidized low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. This is known as the "bad" cholesterol that builds up deposits in your arteries and leads to multiple health issues. In addition to this, the One thing all doctors, scientists and dietitians all agree on is that following this healthy eating plan as a 'way of life' will likely increase your lifespan and reduce the risk of heart disease. What exactly can I eat on the Mediterranean diet? The Mediterranean diet Primarily eat fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, & whole-grains for vitaminsUtilise healthy fats such as canola oil and olive oil for fat intake.Use fresh herbs and spices to flavour food instead of saltEat small amounts of red meat. Only eaten once or twice each monthEat fish for protein and omega 3 fats at least twice a weekEat poultry for proteinDrink red wine in moderationMake sure you get plenty of fresh air and exercise Plant based foods. The Mediterranean diet is primarily made up from plant based foods such as includes fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts and grains. Inhabitants of most countries in the Mediterranean eat very little red meat but a lot of fresh, plant-based produce. In the UK we are encouraged to eat five portions of fruit or vegetables each day. Compare this to Greece, for example, where it is typical to eat nine portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Bread is a major part of the Mediterranean diet but it is not covered in butter or margarine. Instead it is dipped in olive oil. The bread should also be made from a wholegrain and ideally without the preservatives and additives found in most supermarket bread. The ideal solution would be to bake your own each day so that you can control the additives, salt and sugars. A small amount of nuts can be eaten each day. Avoid eating salted nuts or nuts that have been roasted in honey where possible. What are healthy fats? Not all fats are bad for you! The fats eaten on the Mediterranean diet typically come from olive oil or canola oil. Bad fats are the ones that contribute to heart disease such as saturated fats and hydrogenated oils (also known as trans-fats). Olive oil should be used as the primary source of fat whilst on the Mediterranean diet. Olive oil should be used to replace trans-fats and saturated fats in order to reduce your cholesterol levels. As well as being a healthy fat, extra virgin olive oil contain plant compounds that provide anti-oxidant effects. Fish are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids and should make a large part of your Mediterranean diet. Ideally fish such as Tuna, Salmon, Sardines, Mackerel and herring should be eaten at least twice a week. In addition to providing healthy fats, fish is also a great source of protein. Wine is allowed! Many health experts are reluctant to advise drinking wine as part of a healthy eating plan. However, drinking alcohol in moderation has been linked to reducing heart disease. The Mediterranean diet allows for a moderate amount of red wine ( 5oz per day for women and 10oz for men). If you have a family history of alcohol abuse, an addictive personality or find that you are unable to control the amount that you are drinking, you should cut it completely from your diet. So, Is the Mediterranean diet healthy? The Mediterranean diet is great if you like eating fresh fruit and vegatables. You can create delicious dishes and it is a sociable diet as you can eat at any time of the day. You only have to look at the locals when you go on holiday to the Mediterranean. They make an occasion of a meal and take their time grazing on fresh, healthy food whilst slowly drinking wine & socialising. So, is the Mediterranean diet healthy? As eating plans go, there is probably not a healthier way to go. Can anybody follow the Mediterranean diet? The Mediterranean diet is fairly straight forward and simple so should be easy to follow for anybody. Preparing and cooking fish can be a little tricky at first if you are not used to it but becomes easy after the first few meals. It is best to look upon this meal as a way of life rather than a meal plan as it encourages an active lifestyle. You do not have to meticulously count calories and macros on this diet. If you are sticking to the eating plan, eating 10 portions of fresh fruit and vegetables each day and not indulging, these should take care of themselves. The only time the Mediterranean diet may not work is if you are not a fan of fruit and vegetables. If you are looking for a life-time healthy eating plan you need to be able to eat things that you enjoy or, at least, a variation of them. If you do not like the taste of foods that make up this diet you are unlikely to stick to it and may be better off looking at alternatives such as a high-protein diet or intermittent fasting. This diet can be adjusted to suit vegans by cutting out the fish and poultry and replacing with another source of plant-based protein.
How do I start the Mediterranean diet?
Here are the next steps to take if you want to live a longer, healthier life on the Mediterranean diet... Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Aim for 10 portions per day. Your body uses more calories to digest green vegetables than they contain so they are a great way to pad out a meal. Eating plenty of fresh fruit will give you an energy and help to boost your immune system. Bin any white bread, rice or pastas and opt for the healthy whole-grain alternative. Whole-grain rice and pasta all taste great and have a better texture that their white alternatives. Use nuts as a snack. Use nuts as a snack when you are feeling peckish. A handful of cashews, almonds or walnuts are ideal. Try to by them from a whole-foods store and avoid packets of salted, dry roasted or honey-roasted peanuts. Seeds can also be eaten and are great when toasted and sprinkled over salads or fish. You can also make Tahini by blending sesame seeds and use it as a dip for your wholegrain bread.Ditch the butter. Instead of slathering butter and spreads all over your bread, try dipping it in olive oil and a bit of balsamic vinegar. Virgin olive oil can also be used as a dressing for salads and light olive oil is great for cooking with. Utilise herbs and spice. Herbs and spices can transform a dish from something that is bland to a dish packed full of flavour and punch. It is easy to grow herbs at home and, when done correctly, you will have an endless supply whenever you need them. Stock up your spice rack with plenty of cinnamon (a great sweetener), turmeric, pepper, chilli powder and nutmeg. It is often cheaper to buy these in Asian stores by the bag as opposed to the tiny pots you get in a supermarket.Aim to eat plenty of fish. Try to eat fish twice a week. Preparing fresh fish can be a bit daunting if it is not something that you are used to but the reward is worth the effort. You can steam, bake, or grill your fish with your favourite herbs and spices. Avoid fried fish unless it has been shallow fried in olive or canola oil.Reduce your intake of red meat. Instead of eating red meat, eat fish or poultry which both have a much lower fat content. The Mediterranean diet allows for one or two meals with red meat per month but this should be a whole cut such as a steak as opposed to hamburgers or sausages. Opt for low fat dairy. Replace your milk and yoghurt with skimmed and fat-free alternatives. Cheese should also be replaced with a low fat version. I am yet to find one out there that is tasty but I'm sure they exist. Plain, fat free yogurt can be mixed with berried and other fruits to make a great healthy desert.Enjoy healthy eating. Don't be afraid to experiment with ingredients and recipes. This is a great diet if you love cooking and enjoy creating healthy dishes. Do as they do in the Mediterranean. Make a meal a celebration of food and put out an array of fresh, healthy dishes to share with friends and family. When the sun is shining, eat outdoors and take your time over your meal. And finally....enjoy a glass of wine each day. Not many healthy eating plans will let you so embrace it. Read the full article
