the sounds of sobbing interrupted the silence that once permeated the space between the dollmaker and the batman. and with a bit of annoyance, barton tightened his hold on the throat of the man that he was currently holding hostage, which stopped the incessant noise; at the price that that meant they were being actively suffocated. for a moment, the dollmaker wondered how the batman even found out where he was located: this industrial complex was selected by him exclusively for it's very secluded status and for it's confusing layout after all. but when all things were said and done, he supposed it didn't really matter much. if someone had leaked his location... he would simply find out and kill them. barton was just somewhat thankful now that he decided to capture this man while in costume. the alternative was that he'd do his typical routine of going on dates and then holding his victim captive until their dreaded demise came.

it was as if barton himself was death with his mask on, however, as he smelled deeply of rot. and this was due to his crudely sewn together mask, which was made up of an amalgamation of skin from his very own deceased father's face. the blood on his surgical apron also gave a clue as to the man he held at the moment not being his only hostage, blood having been splattered across the front of it. a sinister laugh erupted from the mouth of the dollmaker then, ❝ of course it is. you and your self-righteousness, batman; do you seriously never get tired of it? i'm giving this man the chance to become something bigger than himself — to be fixed of all of his imperfections and to become immortalized forever as a doll — and you want to take that away from him? ❞ the dollmaker shook his head at the other in mock scorn and pressed his knife further into the man's throat.

❝ now, that just won't do. you can try to break my arm to save him, but just remember that i could end his life at any time. i was just putting it off at first because it was entertaining to see you become so tense... but his death will come soon. that's a promise, batman. ❞

thank you! 💚💚💚 I'm not really sure why you think I don't like the earlier arcs though, I love pretty much all the characters and their storis! (I think 5 and 1 are my favorite of the past episodes, though 6 infected me with the Shroud brainrot something fierce.) I just...ESPECIALLY love diasomnia. :') but there is room in my heart for all of these dweebs! like, who among us is not just as ride-or-die for Adeuce as they are for us.

that said, I don't really follow the other adaptations like the manga (aside from a dip-in just to see the new Yuus) or the novels, though I keep meaning to check them out! I do like seeing the differences between the different forms of media, and how certain things get adapted one way or another! but alas, time/a lack of accessibility stands in our way more often than not. :( someday...someday I will have time to consume all of the media...

Nico and Percy's dynamic through the series is eternally funny to me, because it's just. like.

Percy's having a constant mental struggle between his fatal flaw of loyalty with a promise he made to Bianca to protect Nico, versus his Big 3 kid desire to maim other Big 3 kids / Poseidon descendant urge to totally maim Nico specifically. He hates Nico so so much. He thinks Nico's annoying and weird at best, and creepy/sketchy when he's older. The only positive thoughts Percy has towards Nico are "He's Bianca's brother and Bianca was my friend and I owe her/He's Hazel's brother and Hazel is my friend and would kill me if I was mean to him," "He's a powerful asset and useful ally (if questionable)," and "He's kinda pathetic and I feel maybe a little bad about it." Percy has multiple occasions throughout the series where he strongly considers - and on one occasionally actually goes through with - throttling Nico.

Meanwhile, Nico is following around Percy like a lost puppy. He explicitly can never bring himself to even dislike anything about Percy no matter how hard he tries. He has a whole bit in BoO where he's mentally going "UGH he's so stupid BUT IT'S ENDEARING HOW DARE HE." He's totally smitten. He's making deals with his dad for Percy. He's making convoluted plans to help Percy stand a chance against Kronos. During the entirety of BoTL it's like he's playing tsundere - "I'm helping NOT PERCY SPECIFICALLY with this quest! Me helping Percy would be SILLY because I DEFINITELY HATE HIM." Then he proceeds to show up to Percy's birthday party to basically ask him on a weird date and spend the entire next book scrambling around trying to help him or protect him or impress him. And Percy could not give less of a shit.

Just. That dynamic is so funny to me. Percy is the founder of the Nico Protection Club in that he's the one they're all protecting Nico from and meanwhile Nico is throwing himself at Percy to the point where the literal god of gay love calls him out on it.
