Do you have any personal headcanons of Keiji?? I'm just curious 😭
All of the participants live rent free in my mind!
A: Keiji still does investigation work, just not for the police. He'll volunteer help to whoever seems to need it if he believes the cops aren't handling a case correctly because of their corruption. He has a knack for discovering what's covered, and has solved plenty of cases. Though he doesn't go after suspects anymore as his trauma prevents it. He tells whoever needs to hear it what happened and then moves on. His goal is to give closure, not justice.
B: He takes issue with being in other people's debt because debt collectors were around his house quite a bit as a kid. His family struggled financially and seeing them always added extra stress on his Mother. She always told him to do anything he could to stay out of debt, so he didn't need to face the stress she endured. This lesson is one he holds dear and tries to follow. For better or worse.
C: He has a stubble beard. I know this is contradicted by his design, but I feel it in my soul.
D: He has a betta fish at home. He wouldn't mind a dog and/or cat someday, but he'd like to get himself more together first.
E: Keiji loves nature. He find's a lot of peace just standing on his porch and watching the sun set.
More Undercut
F: Keiji's Mother heavily discouraged him from being on the police force. She worried about his safety and knew her son sometimes acted impulsively. He disregarded her fears at the time, but he's far more willing to take her advice these days.
G: He has religious trauma. Hence his "I need to live with my sins" mentality.
H: He read's a lot in his spare time. He tends to be drawn to the mystery genre and short stories.
I: Keiji fought a lot with his bullies. Eventually he started putting his anger toward them into a workout routine and ended gaining quite a bit of muscle before joining the police.
J: Much like when he was a child, Keiji still isn't well off financially. This is because anytime he gets his hands on some money, he sends it to his Mom. He's a big Momma's boy.

Pet headcanons? I wanna see that! I wanna see the widdle babies!!!
ENTITY PET HEADCANONS!!!
THAT WAS FAST-
Anyways, I’ve come up with a few scenarios in which hotel pansexuale ™ can have pets, mind you this is au material and may be subject to change and the mercy of updates.
They learn the concept of pet ownership from a book or somethin-???
Au stuff since in the good!ending au I mentioned once they owned chicken and deer- so maybe a few barn kitties Rush scooped up or a kitty Sally + Dupe owns (the fluffy fam are big fans of kibby. So says me.) or even a really soft, fluffy big dog. Soft things..are a gift for them.. the point is that they all share pet
Plus In my main au they raise Racoons that started after a breeding pair moved into the hotel via a hole in the wall, maybe Rush kept a few favorites…
I don’t really see Seek’s family owning that many pets..or atleast they’d try until Screech brings a rat or something home.? I could Seek owning a cat too..Figure? Chickens and ducks and other domestic fowl Definitely. It’d cluck to them to take care of them. Figure is definitely a fowl person.
Hide definitely gets an emotional support/Therapy dog though for comfort.
Maybe Seek owns one of those hairless cats. Like a pretty calico one.
Imagine it softly clucking or mimicking its flock’s noises in order to call them in for dinner.
Greed definitely owned a hamster, it took care of it even though it’s blind…but honestly? That wasn’t its most important possession out of all its hoard.
Depth. Depth was.
Depth probably would’ve wanted an underwater pet like an octopus or a jellyfish. Some critter that occurs naturally in the pool.
Jack? Hm..snakey snake. Reptiles. Mostly Snakes though.
Bushy in some flavor of au got a ferret. Deadass. No explanation.
Halt? Betta. :) Got that sexy sexy big tank for one little pampered Betta with healthy plants and floating algae balls to match.
“Nice Aquascaping!” Ambush says casually. “‘Watcha got in the tank?” “Betta.” Says Halt. “O-only a Betta..?” “Betta.”
Jeff…? Anything soft and snuggly..maybe a rabbit…? Okay, maybe Jeff needs a dog. Give this man a black lab or a golden retriever or..fuck it, even a sweet shelter dog and watch his heart grow. He needs it. He needs it so bad.
Dread owned doves while human which he cared for deeply. He loved the soft coos of mourning doves outside his home.
Gobby? Bug. Fucking pill beetles man. They rock. Let gobby have a little terrarium filled with pill bugs as a treat. Have him give them water via an Eyedropper.
A60 owns one of those little white dogs with brown tear shitstains on their eyes that are always on the very on crying and adores it.
A90 would probably like a turtle. Watching it swim would make it happy and bring its own swimmy instincts into high gear.
Yes, Printer skunk CAN swim btw. Not a literal water monster like Ambush/Sally but ahh..
A-120 would also like a kitten or maybe a lovebird thank you very much. Much to say, it’d probably like any pet.
Curious would probably like a hissing cockroach or maybe a Xoloitzcuintle dog, maybe a canary…Maybe a Pomeranian?? Mmmmmgmgmgmgngh in-decisive it would have a weird mix of pets.
Guiding light would probably like a pond of koi fish or perhaps an owl/falcon..? Something dignified.
Sorry if your sick about hearing about Rafflesia but they used to own a chinchilla when they were human. His name was Petunia. :)
Rue owned goats at some point..but he secretly loved the little quail chicks at the farm when he was young to the point he has occasional dreams about them..Soft..
Scatters this like pellets to my hungry little doors chickens pspssp feed now

BatPets Headcanons
In honor of the Most Glorious and Beloved Bitewing (and Ace and Titus and Alfred the Cat and Goliath and Batcow.....) I wanted to share my thoughts on what pets the batfam has and should have.
Dick
Ahhhhhhh Bitewing! Our new beloved! We've only just gotten you but if you get whooshed away by bad writers I already know I will RIOT.
It actually makes perfect sense for Dick to take in a stray pup. His bro-son has the attitude and personality of a cat, so he already had that covered. And I can't see him paying high prices for a designer breed (bless him) so it's stray/shelter or nothing.
That being said, he also needs a young dog. Some people are made with the disposition to take in the older dogs with older dog needs, but Dick loves deeply and I can't see that he'd deal well with the shorter timeframe of taking in older dogs. So. Younger dogs, that he can go running with in the morning and play with in the park and nap with on the couch.
Jason
My man has taste, and also had a doggo as a kid. He's got a soft spot for all of Gotham's forgotten strays. I see him as being a pitbull kind of guy, but like. Also mastiffs. Anything big and menacing looking, but they always turn out to be utter marshmallows.
Totally the type to name his big scary dog Tinkerbell or Baby or something mushy like that. Likewise, Kori and Artemis (and probably Roy) all collect cutesy costumes and collars and leashes. Has the most cutsey giant dog.
The kind of dog that he can trust to take care of kids. If he's particularly concerned about a kid out on the street he can drop the dog off to stand guard until the kid's parent shows up. The dog is real gentle with the lil human, but scares off potential kidnappers.
Cass
The first of our exotics keepers! I feel like Cass would really appreciate betta fish. The way the swim and flit through the water, fins seeming to dance as they moved.... like tulle, like dancing.
She probably has several tanks. The first one she got was from Petsmart or PetCo or whatever. It irked her because she knows they don't tend to treat the fish well, but the local petshop's fish were all extremely sickly looking. After that she's hooked, for lack of a better word, and Bruce ends up learning way more than he ever needed to learn about importing fish (and paying for imported fish).
She's meticulous about their care. They've all got nice big clean tanks, and a companion to help keep them clean (different ones according to temperaments, snails for the easier going ones and shrimp for the more aggressive boys). They've got live plants and decorations to hide under, each tank a different theme to show off the fish. Has lowkey been considering getting a female for one of her favorite easy going boys (the first one, who has become a very soothing companion) because he's getting older and she'd like to be able to carry a part of him on.
Tim
His companion is an emotional support animal, with papers from his doctor and everything. Seems like he should be a dog person, but instead has a very big Turkish Angora. Her name is Mrs. Tuffles and he got her from a breed-specific rescue.
She's good for him because she disrupts his work and also helps provide a soothing presence when he has a panic attack. At night if he isn't in bed at a certain time she lays on top of whatever he's working on. If he's panicking she lays on his lap or chest and purrs (the added weight, the feeling and sounds of the purrs, held disrupt tension). She's a cuddly cat, and it tricks him into sleeping in in the mornings.
When he finds out that cats purr on a wavelength that encourages healing, and that there's evidence that they sit on humans and purr in attempts to heal/help them, he bursts into tears and startles the cat, who had been draped over his shoulders.
Steph
Got a bunny because she thought it would be an easy pet. She was very very wrong. It was from one of the neighbors in her building, because the mom of the kid who brought it home didn't want it anymore. It's a cute little lop, grey and brown.
She quickly discovers that bunnies are super dirty, and they absolutely stink. It bites her for the first week (and Tim and Jason and everyone else that isn't Damian, who somehow tricks it into loving him) and she seriously considers taking it to the shelter. But she doesn't. By week three, he's snuggling up on her feet and in her lap, and she decides that maybe he isn't so bad after all.
He didn't have a name when she got him, so she call him Mi-Mi. She doesn't tell Damian, but it's totally named after him because he reminds her of the way Damian had been when she'd first met him and the progression of their friendship over time.
Duke
Seems like a bird type of dude. Probably has a Cockatiel or two. They're very sassy birbs, and there's no way he doesn't enjoy that. One of them repeats words, and has picked up swears from Jason. It swears at Bruce every time he comes in Duke's room. Everyone except Bruce finds it funny.
The other one "dances" whenever it hears music coming from Cass's room. They're both very active and curious, he's contantly having to buy toys for them to rip apart. One of them nipped Damian's ear once, and Duke has never seen Damian look more offended in his life. It was probably the first pet that Damian hadn't been able to Disney-Princess.
They've probably got a dumb name pair. Tom and Jerry, Chip and Dale, etc. Personally I think he'd get a kick out of naming them Batman and Robin, just to fuck with Bruce. He probably then teaches the one who talks (Batman) to say dumb things like "I am the night! I work alone!" etc etc.
Damian
Has all the animal companions. Not pets. That makes them beneath him, which probably opposes his fundamental beliefs. This is my reminder to yall that Ra's started out as an eco-terrorist. Putting aside what he is or is not now, I like to believe that Damian was raised with a deep respect for nature and animals, he probably sees humans as just one particularly terrible animal species.
He has a wide array of companions as is. I'm good with them all, although I wish they'd bring back his dragon friend. :( I love the dragon friend.
I think he'd be the type to have axolotls too. They've got an interesting mythological basis and fit into the dragon theme. Plus the short story "The Axolotl" by Cortazar is a fascinating piece of mystical realism and I could see that he'd be intrigued by the species. They're endangered in the wild because of habitat destruction and invasion of foreign species that prey on them, but are easily bred in captivity. So I could see he'd keep at least one breeding pair, with the intent to someday bully Bruce into funding a project to save their natural habitat.
Barbara
Doesn't have her own pets, because she doesn't want the responsibility on top of everything else she does.
But her apartment always has furry/feathered friends in it because she's constantly petsitting for the others when they have to go do hero stuff. She's basically like a step-mom for everyone else's pets. She's learned how to take care of tanks and whatnot as well, mostly for Cass. The axolotls are gross and she refuses to touch those tanks, but the bettas are kinda like cute grumpy old men. She likes to tease Bruce by telling him his grand-fish take after him.
Always has a variety of pet snacks with her. She is determined to be the overall favorite human to all the bat-pets. Competition is fierce between her and Dami, but she has an edge because Robin the Cockatiel seems to prefer her.

Chapter 2, chapter 3, chapter 4.
Paring: Asahi Azumane x reader
Rating: Fluff, love at first sight (?).
Summary: Asahi is a marine biologist, who is in charge of taking care of the strange creature that they found. But what happens when he discovers that other biologists are experimenting on his precious sea treasure, leaving it a shaky, scared mess? He'll need all the help from his friends to rescue the little fish and take it back to his blue house.
Warnings: This story will contain SMUT, MENTION OF DARK THEMES (Y/n past), MAY BE TRIGGERING TO SOMEONE.
A/n: Hiii, I tried my best, this was the story of a comic that I wanted to draw from a long time, but because I can't find myself taking the pen in hand, I decided to try and write it down.I hope you'll like it.English is not my first language, and I don't usually write, so I'm sorry if there is any spell or grammar error.
Tumblr media
The sea has always been a place of peace for Asahi, a place where he could submerge and forget, even for a little, all the anxiety that the surface was full of.
When he put his diving suit on, and his mask, it was like he was back into the court, full of energy and excitement, but instead of judging eyes, screams and fakes rumors around him, there were calm, silent and colourful fishes who happily swam through the blue water.
Here he could be himself, showing all his love for the sea creatures, and saving those who were sick or hurt.
Thanks to his natural talent, the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory, offered him one of the most important tasks in his entire career.
Saying he was excited was a euphemism, they discovered a new species, who could apparently communicate in some sort of way with humans, and they chose Asahi as the only person who would be in tight contact with it, taking care of the creature.
What they asked was easy, feeding it, playing with it, stimulating it to see its reactions to the various situations and objects and finally finding a way to let it share its knowledge of the sea with him.
The fact that he was the one chosen for this job made him feel proud of his hard work until now, by what really got him, was that he would have been one of the first people to interact with a new entire species.
They didn’t give him much explanation of it, saying that it was best if no one, excluded the chosen one for this job, knew about it existed before they could understand better its origin and its role in the big blue mass.
Turning the small key under the red button, the colour green appeared in the last level of the elevator, allowing him to push it. After mere seconds -that seemed like hours for the poor brunette- the door finally opened, showing a long corridor full of cameras.
Gulping he started making his way through the dark walls, coming to a stop in front of a metal door. Sliding  his personal magnet card, , the door of the most restricted area of the lab opened for him.
With a new wave of excitement he moved fast to the final door, adorned with a shining targ saying “Doctor Azumane Asahi Office”.
Opening it thanks to his magnetic card, he stood shocked on his track.
The room was big, on his left was a huge bookcase that took up the whole wall, in front of it there was a big desk, with a computer, a laptop and a modern desk lamp.
On his right there was a whiteboard and a big table filled with lab equipment that he could use during his research.
In the middle of the room were two armchairs facing what left Asahi shocked;
All the front wall was missing, letting space to a window that faced the huge aquarium that lighted the room of a light blue colour.
The aquarium was deeper than his eyes could see, not letting the light reach the bottom of it, he supposed that the huge tank was the house of the unknown creature… Talking about the creature…
He tried to search for it, but he arrived at the conclusion that it was hiding in the bottom of it.
A ‘bib’ sound was what woke him up from his trance like state. Turning to the door, the head of the project was now standing in front of him.
“Good morning Doctor Asahi, I hope you didn’t have problems finding the office”.
Doctor Furukawa has been one of the kindest people in the lab, always believing in Asahi’s potential, taking him in his lab the day after his graduation.
Bowing respectfully, a shaky smile formed in the brunette's smile.
“Good morning Doctor Furukawa, the walk was fine, I found the office pretty easily, the targ helped a lot thank you”.
Chuckling, he patted his back “Good! Now, I bet you are dying to see it, should we go upstairs?”.
A sparkle of excitement passed through his eyes, nodding eagerly in response.
Laughing at his response, Furukawa pointed to a door situated on the right wall, next to the whiteboard.
“That door will take you directly upstairs to the top of the tank. Is your special entry to the more open side of the aquarium. Other operators in the project will have a separated entry, that will land them in a more closed area, where they won’t be able to be in a more than necessary contact with the creature. We want for it to get used to you, we know how stressful it is for a wild creature to be put in a restricted place, we don’t want to put even more stress on it with lots of new faces every day.”
Walking in the water room, a light music was playing in the background, making Asahi’s nerves relax.
The Doctor reached for a bucket full of fish.
“Apparently it likes music, that’s how we first find it”.
Furukawa passed the buck to the younger Doctor.
“I was with the rescue team near the relit, a poor dolphin got stuck in one of the fish nets on the bottom of the boat.”
Throwing the fish from the buck into the water, both men stilled, waiting for the creature to emerge.
“To celebrate we put some music on, and that’s when it appeared, like a curious child.”
Bubbles picked on the surface, indicating the arrival of something.
“We were, to say the least, shocked.”
Asahi froze.
‘What…’
Colour drained from his face.
He fell on his knees to the ground, staring at the creature.
A very human head picked from under the water, watching with curious eyes the man, making the older man next to him chuckle.
“We thought we were hallucinating.”
A webbed hand emerged, taking hold of a fish. (E/c) eyes studied the dead animal, bringing it near what seemed to be a nouse, as to test its safety.
With a happy hum, the creature opens its mouth revealing sharp pointed teeth, who cut the fish in half so easily, that make it look like butter.
Finishing the fish in only two mouths full, the creature moved quickly to another fish, startling Asahi.
Turning to the Doctor, a shaky finger pointed to the human head in the water.
“I-it’s… It’s… What is it?”
A hum leaves the old man’s lips.
“We don’t know, the bottom half seems to be (Favourite fish -I personally really like the betta fish), but the top half… Well it’s very human like.”
Gulping down, the brunette tried to gather his courage, slowly making his way back up.
The creature looked up at him, moving slightly closer to the edge.
Taken by surprise, Asahi stepped back, making the half fish’s head tilt slightly sideways, curiously looking at him.
Looking around itself, it quickly spotted an untouched fish.
Cautiously it moved again slowly to the edge, purging the fish to the young man, making him confused.
With a light nudge of his elbow, the doctor motioned for him to get closer.
Holding his breath, he lowered to the ground, extending a shaky hand toward the creature.
At the movement in the water, he shut his eyes.
‘OH GOD IT’S GOING TO EAT ME! I WON’T EVEN HAVE TIME TO REACT, WITH THOSE SHARP TEETH, IT’S GOING TO EAT ME IN TWO MOUTH FULL, JUST LIKE THOSE FISHES! Oh Suga, Daichi… You’ve been the best friend ever, I’m sorry I won’t have time to say goodby one last time… And Noa! I still have to give back the film that he gave to me… And I also need to give him back those 500 ¥… I’m such a horrible friend, I deserve to be eaten by an unknown creature who is putting something on my hand- Wait…’
Cracking an eye open, he peeked at his hand.
A fish was now placed on his hand.
Confused he looked at the creature, who was looking back at him with what seemed to be an excited expression.
Sensing his confusion, it took hold of another fish, quickly taking a bite from it and showing it to him.
Looking down at his hand he slowly looked back at the half human, still confused.
Throwing the last piece of fish in its mouth, he cautiously moved closer to Asahi, giving him time to move away if wanted.
When the man didn’t move, a cold webbed hand made its way over his warm one, nudging it  toward his face.
“W-What do you want me to do?”
The other hand made its way from under the water, pointing a finger to the fish.
Following its movement, he quickly understood the fact that it was trying to communicate.
Looking back to its pointing hand he stated “The fish…?”
The hand moved again, now pointing at its mouth, showing off its teeth.
“...Oh! Eat?”
With a final swing the finger was now pointing directly at him.
“Me? You want me to eat it?”
A huge grin spread through the creature’s face, who nudged again his hand, motioning again to its mouth.
Feeling even more confused, he looked at its eyes.
“But why?”
Pointing at him, it made a shocked face, faking to faint, falling under the blue liquid.
Coming back from under the water it pointed at him, then the fish, to finally point to its face who was showing a big smile.
The creature watched patiently at Asahi, who tried to connect all its movement.
Like a light who turned on in his head, he quickly looked back at it.
“You want me to eat it because you saw me shocked and you want me to feel better?”
A loud happy chirp escapes the half human, who was now swimming happily in a circle around the pool.
Feeling like every fear washed away, Asahi finally let out the breath that was holding in his body, letting his shoulders relax and moving even closer to the water.
With a sweet smile he left the fish fall in the water, pointing with his finger to him.
“I can’t eat it”, pointing his finger to his tummy, faking to feel bad. “It will make me feel sick”.
He then started searching in his lab coat’s pocket for the small snack he always carried with him.
Showing it to the creature, he then pointed at his tummy and then to his smile “This is good, I can eat it.”
The creature quickly understood, taking the fish and throwing it far away from Asahi.
Turning back, it beamed up at him.
Without any fear left in his body, he gives time to his eyes to study the creature more closely.
Its tail was long, swinging into the water absently, reminding him of the absent swinging of the legs that people do when bored or when thinking.
It was covered in shining (F/c) scales, who covered most of its body melting with the (s/c),.more humanlike, skin under its belly bottom.
The upper part was recognized as a woman-like shape.
Her breast was covered by an intersection of sea shells and pearls, holded together by some seaweed.
Her (h/c) hair was neatly pulled up in a sideways ponytail, graced by pearls and shells, like her top.
He noticed just now, how gorgeous the creature really was.
With a blush he looked away, making her curious.
Putting her hands on the edge of the pull, she leaned her head over them, staring inquisived at him.
“It seems it likes you.”
A small yelp escapes Asahi’s mouth, who forgot the presence of the older male behind him.
With an apologetic expression he turned to look at him.
“I-I… Do you think?”
Crossing his arms over his chest, he proudly looked at him.
“It never got this close to anyone on its own initiative. It looks like you two have now a bond.”
Looking down at her eyes, he let out a relaxed hum.
Slowly he moved his hand to her face, not wanting to scare her.
When he reached her head, he waited for her to get closer, responding to her inquisitive stare with a warm smile.
She slowly closed the space, testing the warm feeling on her cold skin.
A purr escapes her, nuzzling closer into his hand.
“It’s a she…”
Looking back up at him, a smile brighter than the sun appeared on her features.
Responding with a just as warm smile, he finally stated “And her name is (y/n)”.
Hope you did like it,
Leave a kudos if you did!
Leave a comment if you didn't, telling me what was wrong, so that I can get better!
Leave also a comment if you did like it, your opinion is very important to me.

I wanna get a betta, I've done extensive research, but wanna ask if you have any personal advice? Stuff that only comes up after owning them yourself
Sure. I had bettas for a while. I have basic advices I can give to you, if you wanna follow them. Maybe it might be useful for other people too.. .1 No vases, tiny ass plastic tanks, bowls or stuff like that. It is true that bettas are not great swimmers (if you choose the variety with long fins and not a plakat, which it’s the variety with short fins.) and they no need lots of room...But they need a bit of room where to move regardless. You no need a 20 gallons for one betta, but keep it in a decent space. To say...I keep mine in a -I guess- 14 gallons? (60 liters) and the other one in a slightly smaller one (a 55 liters). Prefer a tank with a lid, cuz bettas can jump real high and out of your tank. Also a lid will help your fish, since they also must breathe external air (Never fill the tank to the brim either...Leave a bit of room between the water and the lid). Said air MUST to be always warm, so a tank with the lid is surely the best option. .2 Absolutely avoid plastic plants. Especially the hard ones. Bettas are curious fish. They love to swim inside things and check around. You often see them resting on leaves or inside decorations. So avoid pointy/sharp things that might rip their fins or wound them in any way. I personally always suggest to use real plants (they are good for the whole tank), but if you really are not for them, go for the silk ones that are softer. .3 About plants....Bettas love to have LOTS of plants around them. Especially floating plants. Bettas love plants. They hide under/between them and their leaves repair the fish from strong lights (bettas do not particularly like strong lights.). So if you can, think about inserting some floating plant inside your fishtank. My fish love to sleep between their roots. Also plants with long or large leaves are good. Vallisneria it’s a good easy plant as example. (If you have seen the pics I’ve posted...It’s the long one that looks like grass blades.) Perfect for bettas. Make a jungle in that fishtank! Of course, every plant needs an atequate source of light. So, keep that in consideration too. If you need, I can give you names for other kinds of easy plants too..
Personal side note: When you set up your fishtank, try to make it look more natural as possible. Avoid flashy colored sands/gravels and tons of plastic stuff. I know it might look pretty to you, but you need to consider that your fish will live in there. And I dunno about you, but I’d go crazy if I had to live in a home with fuchsia or bright orange floors and walls. Bettas prfer darker colors. Brown and black gravels are the best for them. (Also, having darker colors in your set up does nothing but enanche the colors of plants and fish.) Keep that in mind. .4 Bettas are tropical fish. They NEED a heater and a filter. The flow of the water must to be really low, cuz bettas love calm waters. They mostly stay around the surface, so try to keep the surface completely flat. A filter that allows you to regulate the flow of the water would be the ideal. (I have two Fluvial U2 by Askoll as internal filters in my betta tanks. They do their job quite well.) And the water has to be always warm and clean. So, unless you live in a place where the temperature it’s generally always hot the whole year, be sure to get a heater. .5 Try to variate their diet a little. And keep em at diet for one day a week. I have three different kind of foods for my two fish. Two are dry complete foods in grains, the other one are dry red mosquito larvae that I give to them once or two at week as protein treats. (You can choose to feed them live worms and similar things too...People say it’s very good for the fish, but I’ve never personally tried cuz I’m afraid of potential parasites.) Sometimes a boiled and peeled pea is great for them. One half of a pea shoud be enough for one fish. Also be sure to choose a day of the week of absolute fasting. It will help their stomach and intestine. .6 IMPORTANT: The filter of your tank NEED to maturate before you can insert any kind of animal in it. This in general. For whatever kind of fishtank. No matter if fresh water, salt water, cold water or else. The filter MUST to be mature before you insert any animal in the fishtank. Or else, the animals in it will die for sure. I won’t explain to you the whole nitrogen cycle thing, cuz it would be too long. Just google that. It’s easy. If I understood it, then everyone can. XD This is a vital step though. Your filter it’s the core of your fishtank, so you wanna do it right. Usually you need at least one month of maturation before you can add your fish in the tank. For my two betta tanks, I’ve waited even two months. (The pandemic helped with this, in a sense...) There is no magic way to do it, no pills, no ammonia, no products (actually, instant live bacteria vials exist. But they are for emergencies mostly and for -I assume- acquarium shops that need fishtanks ready asap. They cost a lot and honestly it’s pointless to get them, when you can simply wait a bit.) and you cannot expect a mature filter after one or two weeks only. So be sure to get water tests -the liquid ones are the best ones- and be patient. Having a fishtank it’s especially patience. So never rush. The more you wait, the better your filter will work. .7 Bettas are happy to live alone, but if you have lots of plants in your tank and enough room, you can easily add few tankmate. Of course you need to choose the right ones. For sure avoid other bettas (NEVER put males together in the same tank. They will kill each other. Males and females might even cohexist, but it depends by their temper really. Females can live together, but you need room for them and lots of hiding spots and plants, cuz they are not less aggressive than males.) and fish with long colorful fins. Or nippy fish of the same species (like gourami and similar fish). Calm fish that can occupy a different area of the tank (not the surface) are the ideal tankmates. And random note about it...This is in general and not only about bettas. DO NOT MIX TROPICAL FISH WITH GOLDFISH. They want a different kind of water both in temperature (goldfish are cold water fish, so you can’t pretend to place them together with topical fish) and as water values. (A bunch of tropical fish want a more acidic water. Goldies prefer hard water.) So don’t do that. Add to this, that goldfish grow massive in size, they poop a lot and they tend to eat and destroy most of the plants, so they will not last in small tropical fishtanks. Keep tropical fish with tropical fish and goldies with goldies. And no bowls or small fishtanks for goldies either. .8 When you choose your fish, take your time. Be sure to go for a fish that moves around, with fins completely open (avoid those with clamped fins and that look lethargic) and be sure they don’t have weird spots on their body. Their colors should be bright and uniform. No scales up, they should be slender and without swollen areas. Also, the smallest they are, the younger they are. Usually the big ones are also old fish. Bettas live for..Around 4/5 years, normally...Some can live longer if kept real well. But go for a tiny one if you wanna see it grow. (Sure, you can even decide to try and “save” one of those fish that look in terrible conditions....I don’t know where you live, but I know that some shops in America have the terrible habitude to sell and keep bettas in dirty tiny ass cups, so...If you wanna try that, just be sure to have the right meds and the knowledge to help them. Normally good food, clean water, a bit of salt and some drop of methilene blue does the thing, but...Be sure to be careful.) .9 I know it’s fun to see them flare...They are beautiful too when they do that. But that stress them A LOT and they might die for it. Bettas are angry fish already. Don’t make them angrier and stressed for no reason. Avoid mirrors and tanks that contain more than one betta fish. Flaring stress the fish. Let them be and they will live a long happy life. .10 When you change water, NEVER change it completely and be sure to use water at the same temperature of the one in the tank. As the title says. Always use water at the same temperature, cuz bettas are very sensitive to termic shocks...This will kill them or lead to diseases, so be careful. Always use bioconditioner (I guess this is the right name for it in english...) for the water as well... Changing the water completely it’s a nono too, cuz that would kill all the good bacteria in your fishatank. A complete change happens only in rare or particular occasions. Like algae/snail infestations, weird diseases or such. Also never touch your filter media. Especially never touch the ceramic rings. NEVER. If you really wanna clean those, quickly wash them inside a bowl with water from your fishtank in it and never under tap water. Also a water change should regularly happen every one/two weeks. I think that’s all so far? XD If you have questions about it, just ask.

Here's the story about Splish, the killer platy that tried to kill everyone in our 20 gal
We went to the pet store to get platy fish because that's what @grandpacare wanted as pets.
We picked up 4 fish: 1 male platy, 2 female platties, and a female balloon belly molly (that was older and blatantly pregnant but the healthiest looking fish in the tank)
We had also picked up 3 corydoras along with 2 snails for the same tank earlier.
At first everything was great. The three platties swam together, ate together, hid together. Big Mama would swim with them when she was feeling good, but was preparing to give birth so she spent a lot of time hovering behind the heater and patrolling the area behind the filter.
This lasted a few weeks. Big mama had babies, about 12. We left them be, as actual breeding and raising fry was not the intent of this tank.
And then, out of nowhere, Splish, who up until this point was a female sunburst platy, changed gender to male.
All hell broke loose.
It started with small territorial disputes: Splish would intentionally invade areas Splosh liked and had kinda claimed as his personal hides. He did this constantly, intentionally starting fights, often even making the first attack.
That escalated quickly when Splash, now the only female platy, came into breeding age.
The males would spar constantly. At first we thought it was Splosh who was the problem because he was larger and older, but we quickly learned that Splish was the sneaky instigator. He'd charge at Splosh, immediately turning to the side and flaring his fins. The moment Splosh returned the gesture, Splish would attack and then run, often darting behind the glass fish or through some foliage while Splosh gave chase.
Splosh would get stuck on the glass or lost in the foliage, all the while Splish would dart around the far side of the tank and, after making sure Splosh wasnt in sight, would dash up to where Splash was and begin attacking her before aggressively attempting to breed.
After about a week and a half of this, Splish was the same size as Splosh and growing larger, and we decided to remove him from the tank. By now, he'd terrorized every fish in the tank with the exception of the corydoras and I'd had enough of it.
We attempted to move Splish to the 30 gal, as it was currently and intentionally under-stocked.
I supervised the entire event, as Luna lives in the 30g and she's my baby.
At first they were separated as I adjusted Splish's container to the temp and water parameters of the 30g, and while Luna seemed interested, she didn't seem upset (shes very curious but not aggressive by nature... usually). In fact she seemed almost uninterested this time, which I immediately found odd.
As soon as I let him loose, I saw a side of Luna I'd never seen, and havent even seen since.
She hated him. As soon as she got within 6 inches of him she froze, fins wide open. She followed him slowly as he started looking around, slowly gill flaring at him when he'd stop and turn to face her.
He ignored her.
In fact, he turned to the side and opened his fins.
Luna would flare and charge, causing him to dart away, without having her actually bite him. She'd use her fake-out strike to chase him to the far side of the tank, and then watch from a distance, but he kept coming back. He didnt get the message, or he didnt care.
Luna does this little thing when she gets stressed out and is at her wit's end; It's when she darts towards the window and swims back and forth across the the top of the tank before swimming up and down in the corner while staring at me.
At this point I removed Splish because honestly? I love Luna and I'm not letting him stress her out like this. By the look of it, this wasnt going to work anyway. He wasnt even phased by Luna, and while she's not normally aggressive, she needs her space to feel safe.
At that point he got moved to the quarantine tank with some of the molly babies. While he was there, I did some research about his breed and discovered that, based on his size and tail length along with the personality development, he is quite likely a swordtail hybrid, and heavy on the swordtail part.
Splish, the little orange shark, now lives alone in a 7.5g with live plants.
Because of everything, I'm not sure if we'll ever be able to move him back into the 20g, which was the original plan. He's larger than everything else in that tank now, and we already know hes very aggressive.
The good news is he doesnt seem to mind being alone. His tank needs more frequent water changes because of the size, and he often doesn't approve of that, but once it's done he'll check the tank out for a bit to see what's changed before either grazing or hiding in one of his favorite places.
He might just get to be a lone king for the rest of his days. Maybe that's all he ever really wanted... who knows I'm not a fish.
And now everyone knows the story of Splish the platy, an absolute nutcase that is more willing to fight than my betta.

I'm curious, how many animals do you have? How's Popcorn?? Love you, I hope you are good!!!
Hey there, anon!
To answer your question: I personally own 9 animals (not counting my tank of tropical fish, which there was 5 last I counted— they’re kinda separate from everything).
Here’s a list of my big babies and what they are:
Argos: 13+ yr old Beagle
Mummble: 10 yr old tabby
Clementine: special needs leopard gecko
Gogurt: buckskin crested gecko
Scrump: rescued house gecko
Chungus: king koi plakat me betta
Marston: GFP natural-type axolotl
Popcorn: short-hair guinea pig
Duddits: long-hair guinea pig
But overall there are 4 other cats, another guinea pig, another house gecko, and another axolotl where I live.
But as for Popcorn, he’s a lot better. He’s eating and acting the same, but he still he needs to put on weight.
Unsure what went wrong but I’m just glad he’s better.
Thanks for asking anon! :)

Beyond the Betta
I want to preface this: I loved bettas, at one point when I was about 15 I had well over a dozen bettas. Nothing could stop me, especially when Minibow 5’s were constantly on sale. I still like bettas, I think they have a ton of personality and they’re really fun, engaging fish that are incredibly accessible and are pretty cheap to set up. The unfortunate thing is that bettas are sick, they’re overpriced genetic disasters which can be a grab bag of problems. Bettas ten years ago aren’t the same bettas we have now, we have so many different varieties in such a short span of time, all due to inbreeding offspring to parent or offspring to offspring in order to preserve, expand upon, or replicate a desirable trait that sprung up from the genetic mish mash that bettas are. I still assert that non-dragon scale plakats, normal veils and crown tails are some of the healthier bettas you can get.
Now, I am NOT saying that you’re a bad person for having a betta of whatever variety, healthy or not. I am not telling you to get rid of your betta or to never ever get a betta again. You can have your bettas, you can get future bettas. This isn’t an article that’s telling you to get rid of your bettas. I know that everyone leaps to that conclusion any time I or others make posts critical of modern bettas and their ‘designer’ varieties.
But the thing is, you don’t always need to go back to bettas. You can expand your horizons and choose healthier fish in tanks that people normally just leave for bettas. All of these fish have their own charms and quirks, and while some might not have the same pizazz that you expect from bettas, they’re still worthy of appreciation.
The tanks I’m using go from 10 gallons through to 20 longs, which are the most common sized tanks I see people here in the fishblr community keep their bettas in. These are just the minimums, you can always keep your fish or inverts in larger tanks! The tank sizes are simply launching pads, or for you to repurpose an existing tank you already have but have no inhabitants for yet. Keep in mind that 5 gallon tanks are teeny, they’re only 16x8x10, which is too small for me to comfortably suggest to house stock in. Price wise, you’re getting more bang for your buck if you purchase a 10 or a 20 long, especially if you take advantage of the dollar per gallon sales that Petco, Petsmart and Pet Supplies Plus have throughout the year. They’re almost never ending, right after one store has the event going, another pops up. So you have the opportunity throughout many months of the year to get a decently sized tank for relatively little money, and these smaller tanks are light enough that basic furniture in your bedroom can support them, so you don’t need to worry about finding pricey stands.
NOTE: I’ll be mostly linking to Seriously Fish, and a few others, but don’t just rely on those links for all your care needs. Explore!
NOTE VOL 2: I have updated this list and removed the category for 5 gallon tanks, as I no longer feel comfortable making suggestions for tanks this size.
Let’s move on to the lists!
TEN GALLONS:
Hara jerdoni: anchor cat, Asian stone cat. These little cats can be shy and are most active at night. The fun thing about these guys is that they are so unique, but are not impossible to find, and you can make your own teeny biotope-ish tank. Dwarf shrimp: everyone knows these guys, neocardina or cardina, they’re fun, yet sometimes pricey, little inverts. Thai micro crabs: another little invert, these guys are really unique and charming but they can be shy and like to hide during the day.
Pea puffer: probably the closest in terms of rambunctiousness and personality to bettas, these little puffers are curious, clever and quickly become little delights in your home. If you can handle live feeding of white worms or black worms, I highly suggest these little puffers.
Scarlet badis: Well known but frequently overlooked, scarlet badis are beautiful little gems that would make wonderful little specimens in any tank.
Heterandria formosa: the least killifish, these shy little guys aren’t actually killis but are related to guppies and endlers! They’re very hardy and very easy to breed and make excellent beginner livebearers if you don’t wanna go the more common endler or guppy route if you’re interested in starting up a little breeding project. Note: be mindful of your stocking with livebearers, your tank can be overcrowded quickly.
Neoheterandria elegans: the tiger teddy, another micro livebearer, these are a less forgiving than the least killi, but no less rewarding to keep. If you maintain clean and perfect water conditions then you’ll have no problems keeping these cuties. Note: be mindful of your stocking with livebearers, your tank can be overcrowded quickly.
Endlers: now we’re getting a teensy bit bigger, endlers are gaining popularity in recent years and it’s easy to see why, they’re as hardy and easy to breed as guppies but half the size! And they come in an array of stunning and unique colors and patterns. Note: be mindful of your stocking with livebearers, your tank can be overcrowded quickly.
Pygmy sunfish: sweet, undemanding little natives, these fish are a great way to introduce yourself to fish native in the US.
Sculpins: another little native, they’re sometimes referred to as “ugly” but I find their permanent scowls to be endearing. They’re easy to house and don’t require much else from sand and rocks in terms of decor, so you don’t need to worry about plants.
Taiwanese micro goby: A unique little guy, they’re simple to keep if you neutral pH and soft to mid water, they can be kept similarly to other hillstream gobies such as Rhinogobius nagoye, and they’re non-aggressive so you can house a trio in your tank, more if you get a bigger tank. A great fish if you're looking to create a hillstream tank.
TWENTY GALLONS (long):
Chili rasbora and other boraras: my absolute favorite nano fish, they are absolutely tiny, truly miniaturized fish! They display a great amount of curiosity that you wouldn’t expect from such a small fish, and are honestly one of the best fish I’ve ever kept. They’re great if you’re looking to start up a small biotope tank and want an excuse to add botanicals and do something really fancy.
Pygmy cory, salt and pepper cory, and tail spot cory: the three smallest corydoras in the genus, and the only ones suitable for tanks under 30 gallons! They’re charming and absolutely adorable and probably my three favorite corydoras out there.
Ember tetra: hardy, cute and beautifully colored, these tiny tetras would be perfect in any 20 long, perhaps paired with one of the above species of cory to create a ‘micro community’.
Gold tetra: lesser known but not a small presence, gold tetras actually get their colorations from a symbiotic relationship with a parasite that results in their gold coloring, but with the absence of this parasite they’ll be a stunning silver. They’d be perfect for a small scaled, blackwater tank filled with driftwood and botanicals.
Ruby tetra: very tiny and very pretty, the ruby tetra is a great little fish that would work well in a planted, driftwood filled setup.
Akysis vespa: a very cute, very tiny little cat that prefers cool, soft waters and would be great for a mini hillstream setup! No plants to worry about, just glorious rocks and sand.
Dwarf pencilfish: another cute South American that would pair well with one of the above mentioned corydoras in a mini biotope.
Rainbow darter: personable little natives that will love to hop over to you when they see you approach the tank, these darters are hardy and tolerate the harder waters that the midwest and great plains areas are notorious for having.
Sparkling gourami: a tiny relative of the betta, the sparkling gourami is a shy little jewel of a fish that will thrive in a well planted tank.
Licorice gourami: another small anabantoid, like the sparkling it’ll appreciate a well planted tank and you’ll appreciate its gorgeous colors.
Forktail rainbowfish: while many pseudomugil would be appropriate for this size tank, my favorite is the fork tail. They’re busy little guys and the males put on very amusing little display dances when sparring.
Multiple wild bettas: there are NUMEROUS species of wild betta that can be kept in a 20 gallon tank, if you’re interested I’d suggest sending elemental-kiss an ask.
Many killifish: these would suitably need their own post to cover the vast array of killis there are on the market, and the difference between annual and non-annual, but there are multiple killis that would do just fine in a 20 and spawn well.
Shell dweller cichlids, aka shellies: charming little fellas that exhibit some incredibly amusing behaviors and are easy to breed! Great beginner cichlids.
CPO crayfish: these little dwarves have just as much personality as their full-sized cousins!
There are countless more fish that I may have forgotten or simply left out, but all of these fish would do well in the smaller tanks that we typically keep bettas in. It’s good to move out of your comfort zone and learn how to set up new tanks for different fish with different needs, as setting up the tank and exploring the natural habitats of each fish in your own home is one of the major high points of the hobby. So go ahead, start something new and exciting!

My LGBT+ Sims 4 Babies!
So! With all the talking I do about my OCs, I’m sure some of you would be curious to know what some of them look like. :3 I made this post on my Facebook and on one of my RP blogs before, but I wanted to make it again separately here.
So, this is a post of the majority of my OCs that I’ve created on the Sims 4 who are LGBT+. I’m putting it under a readmore bc I couldn’t make a photo post-- there’s 22 pictures here-- and I’ve also left a little description of them underneath.
ALSO. Despite there being 22 of my OCs here, only 19 are LGBT+. The other three are my personal faves. :3 The final three are my two favorite vampiresses and my darling demon that is not only my complete favorite, but also my first ever OC. He’s changed a lot since I first made him. But anyway! <3
Tumblr media
Amelia is a lesbian zombie girl. Her real name was Nadia, but people she meets have named her Amelia. She's able to talk to a degree, though she speaks very slowly and her voice is husky. She tries not to eat anything alive, and shares meals with other zombies. Her cause of death was a drug overdose, hence why she has no bitemarks. She's quiet, clumsy, and sweet, and she doesn't seem to be decaying. When she was human, she loved to dance. Her partner is Emily.
Tumblr media
Emily is a lesbian girl, the daughter of gay dads who own a bakery. Outspoken, can lift her tiny girlfriend above her head because she is very strong. She isn't ashamed of her dads at all, and has helped them with their business for years. She takes no shit. Her partner is Amelia.
Tumblr media
Lynstrom is a pansexual shadow demon/dark fairy hybrid. He is completely blind, but has a sort of echolocation that senses everything but people and humanoid creatures. He's a perfect Southern gentleman, polite and usually flirty. He owns a farm, mostly typical farm animals but has a secret glamoured part of the farm to house mythical creatures, placed there by his former guardian, a full fairy. He has wings, but doesn't expose them often. He is in a polyamorous relationship with Estrella, Dormir, and Tiburón.
Tumblr media
Estrella is a pansexual mermaid, princess of an underwater kingdom, but uninterested in ruling-- though she does enjoy the expensive things in life. Her tail is blue, teal, and sea-foam green, her fins butterfly-wing-shaped. She can be alluring and seductive, but she is usually kind and understanding. She and her family are Hispanic. She was engaged to Tiburón before they joined Lyn and Dormir to form their polyamorous relationship.
Tumblr media
Tiburón is a pansexual merman, a duke of the underwater kingdom that he and Estrella lived in. He is completely mute, and his tail looks like a shark's. He is laid-back and calm, though he enjoys painting and weaving, as well as collecting seashells. He and his family are Jamaican.
Tumblr media
Dormir is a pansexual vampire, born in a rich family and having taken care of his little sister Aria since his parents died. Loves classical music, geeks out when he sees vampires portrayed in the media-- he doesn't care if they're inaccurate, he just loves seeing them represented. He and Aria are British and he was born with double fangs, making him have a slight lisp.
Tumblr media
Jolene (nicknamed Buttercup) is a pansexual fire demon/succubus hybrid. Serious, stable, mostly silent. Has a beautiful singing voice and wears her mask to hide facial scars, as she was abused as a child. She, Selene, and Ren are adopted siblings. She is taken.
Tumblr media
Selene (nicknamed Twitch) is a pansexual lightning demon/succubus hybrid. Hyperactive, bubbly, and always has a ton of energy. She loves to dance and sing, and she always has a positive attitude. She is taken.
Tumblr media
Ren (nicknamed River) is a pansexual water demon/incubus hybrid. Reserved, not talkative, slightly shy. He makes beautiful art and designs clothes, and owns a lot of fish, with his favorites being Bettas. He is single.
Tumblr media
(My self-insert.) Everett is a transgender, gay/asexual shapeshifter/vampire hybrid who can shapeshift into a white cheetah. He's a nerd, loves animals and his family, and especially loves his boyfriend, who puts up with all of his weird quirks. He and Ethan are twins. His partner is Isaac.
Tumblr media
Ethan is a gay/asexual shapeshifter/vampire hybrid, though unlike his twin brother, he can only half-shift, meaning he only grows fur, ears, a tail, claws, and fangs. It's unclear why he's unable to shift completely while his brother is able to. He's shy and quiet, keeping to himself a lot, though his brother drags him out to be social. His partner is Xan.
Tumblr media
Isaac is gay, and a former pirate. He and his sister are Russian, but lost their accents. They snuck aboard a pirate ship when they were children and were taken in by the captain, who adopted them, and they took his last name. They remember nothing of their previous life, but they've always enjoyed their lives. Isaac now lives on land. He's funny, sweet, and loves to prank people. His partner is Everett.
Tumblr media
Xandon is a gay shadow demon, and the second-oldest in his family, as Tarja's oldest brother. He's soft-spoken and reclusive, rarely stepping up to the mic when their band is playing somewhere. However, as an aspiring DJ/sound mixer, he brings beats to the band's performances. His partner is Ethan.
Tumblr media
Tarja is a genderfluid, panromantic/asexual shadow demon. She accepts all pronouns, and mostly presents as female, though as a shapeshifter she can change her appearance at will. Straightforward, loud and proud. Plays bass guitar and sings in the band she shares with her siblings (Nexxan, Xandon, Mizane, and Vixaine) called Pryde 'N Prejadyce. She and her siblings are British. She is single.
Tumblr media
Vixaine is a bisexual shadow demon, the second-youngest in his family and Tarja and Xan's younger brother. He is the lead singer in their band, and can play bass and lead guitar, as well as scream his heart out. He's unlucky in love, but he's energetic, outgoing, and always has a smile. He is single.
Tumblr media
Dementia is a pansexual mist demon. She is quiet, solemn and she startles people easily because her footsteps are soft. Loves to play the violin and piano. Lives with a dragon shapeshifter and acts as his assistant, helping him when he needs to come out of his shifted form. She is single.
Tumblr media
Chimaera is a nonbinary, panromantic/asexual humanoid Chimera (lion/goat/snake), shown in human form. They/them pronouns. They are Greek, born in Rhodes, and they traveled all around the country when younger. Rarely speaks, but has a gentle voice and nature. Loves animals more than people. They are single.
Tumblr media
Chris is a gay ghost boy who was murdered. His knife wound in his chest is under his shirt, he doesn't expose it often. He's a goofball, loves to prank people, but overall he's very sweet. His partner is Paul.
Tumblr media
Paul is a gay ghost. He met Chris when he was human, but decided to join him in being dead, though he hasn't disclosed his death to anyone, not even his love. A professional DJ and animal lover.
Tumblr media
Rowan is an over 200-year-old vampiress, the youngest of 12 children, and one of two of those children who are still alive. She is the grandmother of Violet, Ethan, and Everett, and adoptive mother/grandmother of many others, as well as great-grandmother to Violet's children. Her husband died a long time ago, and while she hasn't looked for love, she's open to finding someone if they're right for her. She drinks blood from people on occasion, but she has plenty at home to choose from if she isn't up to leaving.
Tumblr media
Violet is a vampiress, the latest to carry on her bloodline. She is sassy, outspoken, and she never takes "no" for an answer-- except when it comes to her husband. She is the mother of triplets, and she loves her family with all her heart. She doesn't let being a mother interfere with her sense of style, while most others would-- she wears what she wants. She and Myarel are married.
Tumblr media
(My first original character I created!) Myarel is a shadow demon of German descent, the oldest of seven children. His mother is black, his father white, and while he's the palest of his siblings, he doesn't forget his roots. He's sardonic and seemingly grouchy, but his family and friends are his priority, and he loves them all deeply, especially his triplets-- he loves being a father.. There's more than him than meets the eye. He's married to Violet.

When Is The Best Time To Get A Pet For My Child?
If you’ve decided that getting a pet is the right move for you’re family, it’s important to think about timing. Most pet interest groups will say that you should wait until your child is at least 5 years old before bringing a new pet home. Carefully consider your child’s level of maturity and your lifestyle before making the plunge. Below are some considerations and some suggestions of pets for certain age ranges. Pets For Infants And Toddlers 0-2 Years Old While there can be benefits for a baby to have cats or dogs around from a young age, bringing a new pet home at this time is not recommended.
New pets can be particularly demanding and new parents usually have a lot to deal with already. The pets will always take second priority and there is a chance they could develop behavioral issues if they do not receive enough attention or training early on.
You should also bear in mind that children up to 2 years of age are generally most at risk from dog bites. If you do already own a pet, you will need to ensure that they adjust to the arrival of a new family member. Some common sense precautions must always be taken, such as never leaving the pet and baby alone in the same room. Pets For 2 to 4-Year-Old Children Children this age will, for the most part, be unaware of the dangers that pets can pose, if not treated in a respectful manner. They can also be unaware of the harm they themselves can inflict on smaller animals. So again, it’s generally not recommended to get pets for children in this age group.
If however, you do decide to get a pet for your child at this time, you should probably start with something small and self-contained in a protective enclosure. This will keep both the animal and your child safe from one another while giving your child the opportunity to observe and be curious.
Many people think Hermit crabs are good “starter pets” for kids in this age group. I would strongly advise not to get one.
Almost all Hermit crabs have been captured from their natural homes as they do not breed well in captivity. Also while in their natural habitats, they can live for 30+ years, however once captured, they rarely live longer than 1 year. Again, despite recommendations, if you have your heart set on getting a new dog to grow up with your little one and you’re certain that you can give it the time that it needs, a larger dog is probably the best option. Larger dogs are generally more patient and have more stable temperaments. They are also less likely to get injured by an inquisitive and unpredictable child.
I for one, currently have a Labrador and a Yorkshire Terrier. The Yorkie tends to get quite jumpy and nervous around my youngest so I have to keep a close eye on them when they’re together, particularly when it’s the pets feeding time. My Labrador, on the other hand, has been sat on, had its tail pulled and dare I say it, lost a few whiskers before and yet she never bats an eyelid when it comes to my kids.
While it isn’t recommended to feed a dog too much people food, one great advantage of having a dog at this stage is that you can say goodbye to the hassle of mopping up food from the floor and dealing with the kids left-overs!
Pets For 5 to 8-Year-Old Children Around this time, children are probably ready for a new pet at home. They can begin to take on some pet care responsibility, as long as parents still consider themselves the primary caregivers. It’s a better time to think about getting a cat or a dog at this stage.
Dogs are more likely to share a close bond with your kids. “A man’s best friend” is a true statement about dogs, but “a human’s best friend” is equally apt. Children will always have a friend in the dog.
Cats, on the other hand, can also make very good companions. One big advantage of cats over dogs is they are far more independent. They will not beg you to take them for a walk every day, making them ideal for those with less time on their hands. They are very clean animals and will practically house train themselves. If they’re outdoor cats, you will most likely not even need to use a litter box. Just ensure they’re not using your neighbor’s flower bed!
Guinea pigs make great pets for children of this age. They are very affectionate little animals, squeaking with excitement to see their owners. When they’re happy they will literally jump for joy (called popcorning). They are a little more robust for handling than most other rodents and slightly less easy to lose, making them the rodent of choice for younger kids. Another regular suggestion for kids this age is goldfish. However, goldfish need a fairly large tank with a filter and preferably some real plant life. They will require a fair amount of work to keep them clean and healthy so they can flourish. Unfortunately the term “goldfish bowl” doesn’t do them any favors as a bowl is certainly not sufficient for their well-being.
If you do choose to go with fish, Betta fish may be more suitable. Betta fish are also known as Siamese fighting fish. They are vibrantly colored little creatures with beautiful, long tails and they are comparatively low maintenance. A fairly small tank with a place to hide if they’re feeling timid should be a sufficient habitat for them to live relatively happily. An aquatic snail can be a welcome addition to the tank, which a lot of kids will also love. They will help to keep the tank walls clean by eating the algae. However Beta fish will generally attack anything else that swims, so keeping them together with other fish is not advised. They’re not called ‘fighting fish’ for no reason!
Pets For Children Aged 9+ Kids this age will generally like any pet that they can keep in their rooms. From gerbils and hamsters which are fairly easy to care for and are fairly low cost, to reptiles which can be more expensive and have more complicated dietary requirements.
If your child is insisting on a lizard or snake then some of the cheaper and comparatively lower maintenance options are leopard geckos or corn snakes. One major benefit with snakes is that, when mature enough they generally only need feeding once every 10-14 days. This means you can go away on vacation and you probably won’t have to make special arrangements.
Birds can be considered a little noisy and messy. However, budgerigars or cockatiels can make great pets for kids. They handle better than some other pet birds and they can also learn to talk! It will take time and a lot of patience but this can be hours of fun for your kids. Repetition and rewards are key for teaching a bird to talk.

A picture of Stowaway, the accidental occupant of my little microbiology and pond ecology experiment. He’s too little for the camera to focus on!
In case anyone’s curious, let me nerd out for a sec:
I was given the tank/filter by someone moving countries, so I decided to play around with plants because a: I love them and B: dont keep fish in these, even fighting fish (bettas) because theyre too small to qualify as good petcare!
The tank is set up using a method lacking conventional fish/plant keeping inputs, so there’ll be no co2, no fertilisers, and a heavy focus on natural cycles eg the N cycle. it’s in its early and unpretty stages but it involves organic potting mix, a jar of muddy water from a lake, a light and a filter, and the filter only went on ten minutes ago. It’s been set up for a few weeks and already the natural plant exudates have done a great job of preventing an algal bloom even with high light and the phosphorus peak from the soil. My housemates tank is green in very similar conditions, which is as good a control as I have.
The next stages of experiment are a few months away but none of them should pose any danger to Stowaway, and his care won’t affect them. I’ll be adding organic matter to the filter, and introducing other microbe samples from dams and creeks, adding ground plants and additional substrate items. It’ll be cool to monitor the micro ecosystem and see how priority effects compare to ecological filters, how changes affect composition, and whether new species of microbe can establish into a stable system without disturbance.

My Boys
I love my bettas so I'm going to write about them really quick. Commander - Commander is a chunky king type I got at a Petco on a boredom trip. He was the only one there and looked like trash, so naturally I wanted this fish. He went in the 29 gallon because I assumed he was big and intimidating enough for the flying fox to leave alone. This didn't work. Commander is a big gentle man and eventually got his tail ripped to shreds one night. That next morning I took the fox out to work and put the jackass in our 75 gallon display tank. Commander seems perpetually tired as he lazily glides around the tank. Yawning when ever you look at him. A big smart boy that comes to the surface when cued and tolerates a boop on the snoot. King Liholiho - The heir to the late King Kamehameha. (Unrelated) Liholiho lives in a 2.5 with a few ram's horn snails and light planting. By far the most active betta I have. For a guy with a big tail he can sure book it to the front and pace for attention. While he doesn't appreciate being poked, he will pop out of the water to nip a finger. Very nice. 10/10 a cool dude. Never flared once under this roof. The Grey - No name as of yet. Got him after my boss got a ton of fancy bettas to stock with and he was this lone drab grey boy. He's still very shy, but curious. Often I'll check on him and he'll shove himself into the java moss and stare from it's safety. A very sweet boy.

REI Introduces Adventures for Pets
REI Adventures has been guiding people on adventure travel trips for more than 30 years. Whether it’s cycling the winding roads of Zion National Park, exploring the unique flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands or trekking through the Himalaya, REI guides have earned a reputation for delighting wanderers with excursions across the globe. Today, REI Adventures is announcing a new offering: REI Pet Ventures—global adventure travel just for pets.
“We branched out into family adventures over a decade ago, to much success, getting parents and young children experiencing nature and travel together,” said James Rodgers of REI Adventures. “For many of us, our pets are a valuable member of our family, sometimes even more than a child or spouse, so expanding into REI Adventures trips for pets felt like the next logical step.”
The inspiration for Pet Ventures—active adventures designed with pets in mind—began with REI customers. For the last few years, customers traveling with REI Adventures raved about the trips, but consistently told trip leaders that they wished they could expose their pets to the same level of adventure. “Our first thought was to have folks bring their pets along on the adventures, but to be sensitive to those allergic to or fearful of animals, we thought, why shouldn’t the pet be able to travel on their own?” explained Rodgers. “There’s many a turtle or goldfish who would prefer to leave their humans behind and have an adventure.” From there, Pet Ventures was born.
Longtime REI member Laine Cherashore was one of the first people to send her cat on a Pet Ventures pilot trip, Great Smoky Mountains Glamping for Cats. “I've felt guilty about keeping Tosh indoors from the beginning,” Cherashore said. “She's always longed to be an outdoor cat. I couldn't be happier that REI finally provided a safe and fun environment for her to live out her best adventure cat life!” Tosh, the cat, came back with a glossier coat and improved fitness levels. Cherashore was thrilled, she said.
Curious? Pet Ventures is starting with four unique offerings:
Great Smoky Mountains Glamping for Cats
In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the valleys are dotted with homesteads where cats can mew for milk and trees tower tall, making them perfect for getting stuck in. This four-day adventure brings your kitty face-to-face with this iconic park’s most beloved trails, including the Appalachian Trail. Cats wanting to tread outside their comfort zone can sign up to raft the rollicking Class III rapids of the Nantahala River, while others can choose to fly high above the forest floor on a mountaintop zip-line tour.
Best of all? Each night a private, deluxe REI Signature Camp awaits. Your cat will nibble farm-to-table kibble lit by campfire and pad their way into down-filled sleeping bags made from claw-proof nylon. It’s the purrfect balance of comfort and connection to nature.
Yellowstone Kayaking Escape for Betta Fish
Abundant wildlife, unearthly geothermal features and an array of wide-open landscapes epitomize Yellowstone. Designed specially for the betta who prefers to travel solo, this private adventure offers four days spent paddling the lakes of the United States’ first national park in the world’s only kayak made to accommodate fish bowls.
Local guides lead the way to high-altitude lakes in the backcountry, far from the crowds. Your pet will be welcome to proceed at their own pace and even extend their days with solitude-filled trips along the lovely waterways surrounding the lakes. Each evening, they’ll be offered a flavorful bloodworm meal before being lulled to sleep by the vast, star-speckled night sky.
New Zealand Country Cycling: Mini-Donkey Route
Nine days, two quintessential New Zealand trails and one 35 percent grade street (the steepest in the world): It’s the trip of a lifetime. Your miniature donkey will pedal the car-free Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and Otago Central Rail Trail to discover towering mountain ranges, awe-inspiring glaciers, picturesque lakes and historic towns. Between two-wheeled tours they’ll savor local, ass-approved brews and carrots and meet fellow four-legged cyclists who are sure to become their new friends.
Each day brings vibrant scenery and challenge, from Lake Tekapo to Queenstown. Their free day will be spent in Dunedin, a sweet city with Victorian and Edwardian architecture and plenty of nearby trails, to discover city life and wildlife, including the albatross, sea lion and rare yellow-eyed penguin.
Thailand Beach Climbing Adventure: Hedgehog Route
Spend nine days climbing near the sun-drenched beaches of Thailand. Your hedgehog will begin in Chiang Mai, the hub of the north. Zip-lining gives a taste of what’s to come and a view of the jungle canopy. The evening allows for the option to wander Chiang Mai’s famous night markets, browsing  handcrafted silk, paper and textiles, and indulging in fat worms. Next up are tropical beaches with giant pillars of karst limestone.
This introductory course will allow beginners a chance to learn or practice rock climbing at a premier destination. All the technical equipment is provided, so your hedgehog can simply focus on gaining skills and enjoying the journey. They’ll return home with plenty of stories, friends and newfound confidence on rocks.
