Hi! I saw a post where you had a game made in godot with old school rendering, do you maybe have any tips on how to make godot render a game like that instead of its normal rendering method?

I'd be right happy to!

I'll try to make this concise lol, I always end up overexplaining and then getting lost in the weeds. Buckle up, it's a loooooot of little little things that all add up.

First off, you should decide which look you're going for. N64 and PS1, the two consoles I'm emulating, both had drastically different specs. (plus, there's plenty of other early 3D systems I've not even touched!)

The N64 had texture filtering (textures were interpolated aka "blurry"), it had floating point vertex precision (points moved correctly), it had perspective correction on its textures (no warping)

The PS1 had no texture filtering, no floating point vertex precision (vertices snap and pop around), affine texture mapping (textures warp weird). I also think the color space they operate in is different? Don't quote me

So you can go hard one way or another or pick and choose what you think looks good! We don't have anywhere near the hardware restrictions they did in the 90s so go nuts.

RESOLUTION

To get a low resolution window, I set the window size of the game and the window override size to different amounts

In green is actually how big the window is on my screen (4k monitor) and in red is the retro resolution I want. If you set the stretch mode correctly (an option a little further down the Window tab) then it'll make the pixels big

COLORS

Now the PS1 had the capability of showing you over 16 million different colors, but it could only display 50,000-150,000 at a time, so in order to get more fidelity out of it, the engineers implemented a dithering effect to better blend the otherwise sharp edges between colors.

I used this shader to achieve the dithering effect. If you don't understand shader languages, that's fine. There are a few different pre-built ones for looking like the PlayStation 1 out there.

TEXTURES

Textures for the PS1 could be as big as 256x256, but they were typically 128x128. And they would squish everything a model needed into there usually, at least with like player models and objects and such.

As mentioned, if you're not good with shader language don't worry. There are countless resources out there that people will either let you use or teach you how it works. But I'm gonna touch on it a little bit here.

PS1 textures had no pixel filtering, so you could see individual pixels.

This is what determines that in the shader code. If you want it to look like the N64 (blurry lol), the proper hint is "filter_linear". Note that it won't be 1:1 with N64, cuz they used bilinear filtering (which kinda sucks and causes weird quirks) whereas now you'll only find linear or trilinear filtering. It's a negligible difference imo.

PS1 textures also were only saved using 15 bit color. I'm told that Photoshop's "Posterize" filter set to 32 can achieve this, but don't use photoshop if you can help it. I use GIMP, and while a newer version might have a posterize filter, or there may be a plugin out there, my version doesn't so I cluge it a little.

Change your color mode to "indexed", set color dithering to how you like it, and the number of colors in the palette to a number to get a good result. Usually I'll do 16, 8, 32, but occasionally I'll cheat and do a non-multiple-of-8 teehee >:3c

You can change it back to RGB after to make further editing easier.

LIGHTING

N64 and PS1 both implemented vertex lighting, as opposed to the more modern and (now) ubiquitous per-pixel lighting. Godot as it is right now (4.2 i think?) claims it has vertex lighting that you can set as a shader property but they're lying and it doesn't work yet.

The old consoles could only handle like, 2 lights though so it doesn't matter much.

The real star of the show, and in my opinion the one thing that makes a game most look like the 90s is the inclusion of vertex colors.

By multiplying the color of your texture by its stored vertex color, you can do all the shading yourself!

Plus you can reuse textures like crazy just by coloring them differently. The N64 also made heavy use of vertex colors by forgoing a texture on models entirely and just painting them using verticies. The only textures on SM64 Mario are his eyes, stache, hat emblem, buttons, and sideburns. Everything else is done with vertex colors.

Here you can see this level from my Crock Land with no vertex coloring, with some of the vertex colors only, and then with the two combined.

Rare loved this. Look at how colorful that cliffside is in Jungle Japes. It makes it so much more interesting than just a brown cliff face. Plus you can see the vertex coloration instead of textures at work on DK and the Gnawty.

My go-to example for PS1 is always Spyro, what a gorgeous game. All of those colors there are not made by a light or an environment. They're hand painted babey! Also! With spyro! The skyboxes are actually just huge domes made up of vertices that are colored in different ways! That's how they can look so colorful and "hi-res".

There's plenty more you can do, like adding a CRT filter or a little bit of chromatic aberration which I haven't gotten into yet.

The way I've learned all this is just by being curious as to how the old consoles did their thing, and slowly accruing the knowledge over time. There's still infinite stuff I don't know too.

I hope that helped! And wasn't too longwinded or confusing! Like I said, it's all about piling up tons and tons of little things, small details, weird graphical quirks that really bring out the retro 3D feel for me.

And I didn't even get into the modeling side of things! That's an entirely different "color-of-the-sky"-sized post though.

I'd be happy to re-explain or explain more about any of this!

Christine shook her head slowly, still looking at the eyeshadow palettes, not knowing what to do. It was too much just for a silly thing like makeup. Johnny sat down beside her and grabbed her hands.

making gifs - where to start

first up - source material and software downloads:

I recently got new versions of the twilight saga movies from Pahe, I went for the Bluray 2160p or 1080p whenever I could.

Use KMPlayer 64x to play and cap the movies.

You can get software like Photoshop from the various guides and websites suggested in this beautiful subreddit. This website is probably most user friendly.

1. how to make gifs?

This video tutorial is your most basic, bare-bone starting point. Grab a video you like, download KM player and get started.

2. adding a coloring

A coloring is what you add to your gifs to either color-correct them and make them look normal (looking at you - twilight blue tint) or to change the color palette for personal taste/visual effects.

Colorings usually come in the form of PSDs, as a pack of adjustment layers that has been saved in .psd format and uploaded for other people to download and use. Seldom, they come in the form of ACTIONs, as pre-recorded steps which will replicate on your project once you open the action in your Photoshop and activate it by hitting the "play" button.

Basic gif and coloring skills are all you need for your first gifs.

3. sharpening

Once you know your way around photoshop you can try your hand at sharpening. This is a tutorial on how to sharpen all layers at once "by hand". And some more advanced sharpening methods.

Nowadays, most people just record their usual sharpening steps and save them as actions. Or they use other people's actions. Here is a tutorial on how to use a sharpening action you've downloaded.

4. adding text to gifs

This is my giffing arch nemesis so I'll just drop this tutorial here with zero explanation, y'all enjoy.

5. having fun with colors

This isn't something I do often so again, I'm just dropping this tutorial here with no explanation. But tldr gradient fill in combination with the right layer blending mode is your best friend whenever you want to add gradients, colors, colorful text, color changing text, aka all the fun stuff.

6. having fun with shapes

Now this is my bestie because where I struggle with colors and text I find messing with shapes comparatively easy. You can come across "gif templates" on tumblr fairly easily or make up your own shapes if you feel like it. Just make sure to keep it at a width of 540px total (each space between each gif should be 4px) and a height of I believe 750px total (but don't quote me on that last number).

This is a basic tutorial on how to plop two gifs into one canvas. The most important thing here is that you make sure that the number of frames or the lenght of the smart object is the same. Other than that you can go wild with this.

7. gif saving settings

@anue here on tumblr had THE BEST explanation for the different gif saving settings but went private and I'll legit never stop mourning that 💔

most people roll with these settings but you're always welcome to adjust them for different gif sets and source videos. not every source video will like the same save settings (anime vs. disney vs. marvel action movie vs. snail documentary).

Blending Tutorial!

Firstly, thank you for the compliment anon! Now, I'm going to go through the process considering that you already know how to make regular gifs and know how to use adjustment layers, so I'll be focusing specifically on blending but if you need those tutorials I can make them, just ask!

This is gonna be our end result after the whole process:

This specific gif from this gifset(with the typography removed) is focused on a color palette with only two adjacent colors so it's a bit easier to make the blending look good but this process works for any kind of gif! So let's start the tutorial!

1. Get your desired gifs into the same canvas

These are the two gifs I'll be blending for this gifset. Make your gifs and resize them to the size of your final gif. Remember to turn the layers of each gif into Smart Objects so that you can move them around properly when blending.

I usually make the gifs and just copy and paste one of them onto the canvas where I made the other one. You can also make your gifs and save them separately from each other first and then put them into the same canvas, but I prefer to make all adjustments except for resizing in one canvas so I can tweak the positioning of each gif as well as the coloring so everything looks the way I want it to.

2. Put each gif into a folder

This will make it easier for when you start using adjustment layers on each gif so that the adjustments don't interfere with other layers.

3. Set layer mode to screen

Set both folders to Screen, this will help blend them together better than if you were relying only on the opacity of the layers. I also usually create a new layer and use the paint bucket tool to color it black. Your gif should look something like this:

The black background makes sure there aren't any transparent spots in your gif when you use the layer masks to blend them as you can see here:

4. Create layer masks

Select each group one at a time and go into Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All. Your layers should now look like this:

5. Start erasing each gif on the layer mask

Use a soft airbrush to erase each gif to your liking. With layer masks you can use the eraser tool or the brush tool. Layer masks work based on color value(how light or dark the color is). The darker the color you paint with your brush the less opaque it will be. Painting in black will erase the area completely and painting it white will make it completely visible. The eraser defaults to the same effect as if painting with a brush in black.

As you can see I've erased one of the gifs way more than the other, that's because I only erased parts of the gif that would interfere heavily with the gif I wanted to be more visible. Make sure to move around the timeline of your gif to see if you need to erase more or less of each gif since the person or thing you're trying to keep visible can move around and get covered.

6. Make your color adjustments

If you've already made your adjustments before pasting both gifs into the canvas you can skip this step. Since this gifset was focused on orange and yellow I adjust my colors to match that. I keep my adjusment layers in groups inside the respective gif's folder so I can turn them all on or off easier and so they occupy less space in my Layers tab.

7. Export your gif

This doesn't interfere with the blending and a lot of these settings are personal preference but I thought it was worth sharing.

I want to clarify, this was not done to respond to a recent post. It's a thought I've always had in the Fandom and no matter how popular the image is, there are fans who don't seem to take it into consideration...because of the HCs of a certain song that dominates the Fandom because of how Gakupo and Luka should "always" be portrayed..

If you have known me for a long time, I think you will notice what my thoughts is like with the GakuLuka ship. When I entered the Vocaloid Fandom and discovered this ship, I didn't think it would become one of my favorite couples in fiction, even if it's just two banks of software programmed to sing (or speak in the case of a Talkloid). I love the characteristics that combine these two, the color palette, the magnificent duo of their voices together and the designs easily suggest a love between historical figures (Gakupo a Samurai, Luka a Damsel). But something has caught my attention is which gave birth to this ship and made a certain dynamic between them seen as a couple endure for a long time to such a degree that thanks to the fact that today it is no longer executed in a large part of the recent Headcanons due to its controversial and scandalous what is it.

Go Google It (ググれカス/Ggrks) is an original Vocaloid song. Created by A-minP on February 18, 2009, this song is about how Gackpo is madly in love with Luka, the girl he met through chat, but she treats him with indifference and tries to ignore him, giving him answers to everything he asks 'Go Google It', in the end Luka admits her feelings towards Gackpo, not knowing that he was listening to her and she denies saying anything about him. How it looks in the description is the typical "love story" of how to conquer a Tsundere, which from the beginning of the description makes me think, why would Luka accept Gakupo in the chat if in real life he treated him like shit?? I know I don't have to give so much background to this part but that's what starts my talk about why this song shouldn't be taken seriously as a romantic song and interpreted as such in case of romanticizing a relationship like that.

Starting with the first verse, we are told how Gakupo meets Luka for the first time in person, and what is the first thing he does? He tells her that he loves her...yes...not even a day goes by and he already admits his feelings, then there is Luka, although I have heard that she is a "mature" looking Vocaloid in the Cryptonloids instead of trying to deal with the situation of the topic and be a little more understanding that it is the "first time they interact" she just rejects him and asks him to leave her alone, then we move on to the iconic phrase of "Go Google It, idiot" followed by questions that Gakupo asks her and they are about things like what her email is, where she lives, what kind of men she likes, what she thinks of him, if she eats eggplants, if we ignore the first tree you can see that it was something harmless...The second time he asks her random questions it's already something to worry about, as Gakupo asks Luka about the color of her underwear or what she's wearing (no, I didn't reject him, I'd call the police if Someone in real life asks me that). While the rest of the song is about Gakupo conquering Luka and her rejecting him either physically with blows and insults or using objects that remind her of him to continue torturing him if he is not present (making me think, is Luka really the victim? Because Although I don't condone what Gakupo does, Luka isn't saved from being a saint either) and then we have the end of the song with Luka admitting that she fell in love with him, it is not known with exact science what caused this change, but Just as she admits it and Gakupo finds out, she continues to denigrate him until she reaches the mythical fork scene (I'll just ask, you tell me that a woman, canonically, 20 years old, who the entire Fandom approves of being someone "mature", acts like a snotty and rude girl, and still approve of this "being an act of maturity"?) From here the song concludes.

Now, according to what I learned from my friends, this song was not made to promote a loving message but rather as a song "to make you laugh" (other examples of this type of song would be Magical Neko Len-Len and Owata!). But before I let it go, I ask again: Would you really be laughing or looking tenderly at the image of a toxic couple that is based on the perversion of men and Dom abuse by women? Before talking more about this, I would get to the point of how this song achieved its content of giving birth to the GakuLuka ship and I can only say that the vast majority of fans around the last decade (and few in recent times) approved this like "Oh but what a funny couple" "Without this song they would be nothing together" "Gakupo and Luka are so mature and cute in this relationship" (Oh yes, yes mature means being a mental pervert with a woman you know for first time and she acts like a 13-year-old girl when she gets angry, I think it's possible) and from here came countless stories (Fanfics and Doujinshis) and FanArts based on the image of Go Google It with the interpretation of the fans for being "A love song" by Gakupo and Luka, although it is not bad that in the fanfics they could develop their relationship better and that the FanArts only attribute to honor it like a large part of the Vocaloid songs. It would have been a little more tolerable if at that time the fans had recognized that no matter where you looked, Go Google It did not encourage a healthy relationship, and from this, speaking in general of Fanfics, they came out with the typical story that Luka is not like other girls and who does not believe in romance but has to succeed in school, and Gakupo was so flat and without personality that the only thing that stood out were his scenes with Luka or being rejected by her, until a miracle happens and they fall in love...but this does not mean that even if Luka accepts a courtship with him, she will continue to see herself as the same girl who denigrates him behind his back and even becomes jealous when she sees other girls flirting with Gakupo.

I know that at this point you will tell me "They are fictional characters and the story of the song does not affect real life" but indirectly from before and even today...there are still these types of things...It could easily be interpreted when a boyfriend (and worse in cases, a complete stranger) is looking only for the physique in his partner, although both are interpreted as 20-year-old characters, there are men who, without having an age difference, only look for that in the women, sex and perception. Many here also interpret Luka as a victim who is harassed, but if that were the case, I wouldn't believe this if, apart from acting immature, she spends her time abusing Gakupo both physically and psychologically, even if most of the stories put it this way like a normal boy who is interested in Luka in a healthy way and she doesn't reciprocate like that. I also cannot accept that they continue to believe that this image is beautiful because Go Google It brings them "Nostalgia", that is not an excuse to indicate that it is a song with a good message.

Something that relieves me is that today in the Fandom this case is no longer seen as relevant as before, except for a few as I mentioned before, and a large part of the GakuLuka community matured and knew that the two of them deserve a dynamics and new stories to be able to save this ship from a low reputation that it had for NoGakuLuka fans. Some are even going to adapt the concept of Go Google It but better developed without having to add both as perverts and toxic in the relationship or alone is left to give a FanArt.

I make this opinion since I personally kept it to myself and could only share it with friends. If you are new to the community and it is your first time listening to it (or you already knew about it) give yourself a moment to think about whether what you like is something other than just the toxic relationship between the GakuLuka of this song or that Go Google It captive by memories of your childhood/adolescence, there are other very beautiful songs by them that, although much of their relationship is applied as a tragic love story (as seen in Witch), lead to something better developed as it should have to see this ship without necessarily being guided by Go Google It, which has aged badly for its message by leagues, as being the first thing that started the ship, it is not a story that would be considered to give a funny story or a romantic love.

"No, I'm okay for now. Y'all go ahead. I'm almost done," I tell Tia when she asks if I'd like to come down while she prepares dinner. Don't get me wrong, I am definitely starving but I really want to get this bed done so that she and the guys can rest comfortably tonight. My guys bring up the last few boards, and I send them home for the evening after thanking them for their hard work. Once I'm done nailing the last slat board down, I start to assemble the drawers that will serve as storage in the footboard. When they are complete, I install them on the drawer slides, opening and closing them several times to make sure they have smooth movement. This sprawling bed is equivalent to two king size beds put together, taking up the entirety of one wall, only leaving room for the night stands to fit snuggly between it and the adjacent walls. Thankfully, there is more room in the bedroom, almost like a whole other bedroom is attached. This place is incredible, from the high ceilings, to the gold sconces, beautiful color palette, to the awe-inspiring floor plan.

The way that I've built this bed allows for a platform feel with no need for a box spring to support their current mattress and the new one that was delivered yesterday, being able to rest on the slats. I am a man that knows my limitations and realize that there is no way that I'll be able to get this mattress on the frame or bring the one from the garage up alone. When I'm finished cleaning up my mess and gathering my tools, I head downstairs to ask the guys for help. My foot hits the bottom stair when I overhear their cheerful conversations and joyful laughter. It's a sound that I wish could be bottled up and saved for later, I imagine that this is what heaven sounds like. I drop my things onto the floor after rounding the staircase and head into the kitchen. As if waiting for me to join them, they all greet me with such excitement and so much love.

"Yoongi, come join us," Jimin offers, reaching for my hand while Jungkook reaches for the other.

"Are you finally done? We've been waiting so long," Taehyung adds.

"Yeah, I just finished up and was actually coming down to ask for a hand or two putting the mattresses on."

"That can wait. Come. Sit," Namjoon says.

"You really should eat something. You haven't eaten all day," Tia mentions, putting me on blast.

"WHAT?!" The guys all speak in unison, clearly upset that I've not had a meal.

"No, I did. I had a few tangerines, some water, and-," I say nervously rubbing the back of my neck. I don't even get to finish my sentence before multiple hands are pulling me to sit at the table.

"Why haven't you had a proper meal," Hoseok asks with a frown. "You have to make sure you don't miss meals so that you won't get sick. Here," he says as he places a plate of spaghetti in front of me, grabs my hand, and slides a utensil into it. Even though I love this bunch, it is still awkward to have everyone's focus on me, worrying over me. Before it gets too uncomfortable, everyone goes back to what they were doing as if on cue. Some are bringing food to the table while others are bringing more dinnerware and utensils, napkins, and taking drink orders. They are all busy doing this or that, except for Hoseok, who hasn't left my side since I sat down.

Once everyone's task is done, they come to join us, sitting comfortably around the table. The sound of dishes clinking, more conversations, and laughter fill the space. This is not something I'm used to being that I live alone. Even my dog, Holly, is with my parents as I've been too busy to properly care for him, too swamped with jobs.

"Wow, everything looks delicious and this spaghetti is the best I've had," I compliment before digging in for another bite.

"I'm glad you like it! It's a simple meal but is still one of my favorites," Tia tells me.

"It really is so good. Here, try this too," Namjoon says, placing pieces of steak on my plate.

"Me, too," Taehyung says, wanting Namjoon to share with him as well and he does as Taehyung reaches over to put a piece of fried chicken on my plate next to the steak tips. "Here. You don't have any chicken."

"Sorry about all the random sides. I know they don't really match but we wanted to make sure there was enough for everyone," Tia says. "Speaking of which, who wants to do the grocery run tomorrow?"

Jungkook and Taehyung volunteer, then Jungkook asks, "You coming, Yoongi?"

Even though I understand what this relationship is and its logistics, I'm still caught off guard by the question.

"Huh?" I ask for clarification while almost choking on my drink.

"My bad, I just thought..." he trails off, looking around at the others seemingly afraid that he's made a mistake.

"We didn't get a chance to talk about the next step," Tia tells everyone. "So, we talked about our relationship, things that the rest of us have experienced, and the things that have led up to this point. I didn't get a chance, however, to get your opinion on living arrangements. Of course, we all want you to stay with us, but what is going to make you the most comfortable is what matters."

She is sitting directly in front of me, peering at me while everyone else goes back to their meals. It's like they know how to treat me, understanding that I get uncomfortable under pressure, without me having to say a word. When she offers to speak with me privately, I find my courage and decide to talk as a collective.

"Is that truly something you all want? I really don't want to intrude or be in the way."

"You wouldn't be," Namjoon says, and goes into further details regarding accommodations. "We all have a separate bedroom outside of Tia's, though we don't sleep there, preferring to cozy up together in Tia's bed."

"Our bed," Tia corrects him with a sly grin.

"My bad. Yes, our bed," he says, giving her hand a squeeze. "Our clothes and other belongings are in those bedrooms, though."

"There are, also, bathrooms upstairs that we've used if the main one is occupied. There is another in the basement as well as a couple more bedrooms," Jimin explains.

"So, the bed was built so that we could all fit but there is plenty of space around here and things for you to do if you ever need some alone time," says Jungkook.

"We are in no way trying to talk you into doing something you're not comfortable with, but I think I can speak for everyone when I say we would be thrilled to have you here," Taehyung says, placing his hand on my shoulder.

"Have you decided what you want to do, Hobi?" Jimin asks Hoseok, taking some of the heat off of me.

"I have. Actually, I mentioned to Tia earlier that I would love to stay if you all would have me," he answers. "I would just need to tie up the loose ends back home which will be easy since the lease on my apartment will be up this month. I can probably get that done tomorrow."

"Nice!" Namjoon begins, followed by similar sentiments from the others.

"What are you thinking?" Hoseok asks me.

"I don't know. It's all happening so fast. I told Tia earlier, it all seems too good to be true. Do you guys never get jealous of each other? Is everyone dating each other? I have so many questions right now."

They speak more in detail and patiently answer any of my additional questions. I do, really, want to stay but I also value my time alone, being more introverted than the others. The lease on my apartment ends this month as well, so the timing would be perfect. It's just so much happening at once. Tia is so patient with me and shares more of the knowledge she has acquired regarding polyamorous relationships.

"Polyamory, of course, is being in a relationship with multiple, consenting individuals at one time. Being that there are seven of us now, we are considered a polycule. You guys are not required to do anything you don't want to, including dating or being physical with each other. The guys are used to and understand the pull that brings more love into the house. Correct me if I'm wrong guys, but they seem to experience compersion seeing me meet new people."

"Absolutely! She is so damn cute when I watch her with the other guys or meeting new people. Her joy brings me so much joy," Taehyung confirms and the others agree with various hums and nods.

"So, Tia is like an anchor, being our 'home' of sorts. She is the reason we are all here and is our primary priority," Jimin adds. "There are rules that we choose to abide by," he says while pointing to the other men, "and that is that the relationship is closed. We have no desire to find love or other romantic relationships outside of this polycule. Did I use that word right?"

When Tia nods, his eyes disappear when he smiles with pride. Taehyung winks at him as if congratulating his feat. They are so fucking adorable.

"So, these guys have decided to be my nesting partners," Tia says with air quotes, "who will live here with me. We will share our lives fully, from living arrangements to finances."

"No pressure. I get it if you need to think about it a bit more," Jungkook comforts me. "And solo poly is an option, right, Noona?"

"Of course. You can choose to live independently to come and go as you please."

The way that my true feelings burst out of my mouth is borderline scary, both because it seemed to pop involuntary and because I'm saying it aloud, "I want to!" Fuck, that was loud. I pause for a moment to compose myself. They have not given me any reason to keep this hypothetical wall up and I must admit, I've never felt this secure in a romantic relationship before. "I want to stay, too."

"Yay!" Tia practically jumps from her chair and skips around the table to me. Standing behind my chair, she drapes herself over my shoulders to take my face into her hands, freckling one side of my face with kisses before she kisses my lips. I hear Jungkook and Namjoon whoop loudly while Jimin and Taehyung clap their hands with excitement. Hoseok gently places his hand on my thigh under the table before I take it into my own hand. They sure have the ability to make a man feel wanted, and I've never been more certain of a decision in my life. I guess I'm home, sweet home.

Hoseok's POV

Meeting Yoongi was like looking into Tia's eyes for the first time; comfortable, loving, and magnetic. The grip on my heart is like a vice and the lust I have for them burns, scorching my body from within. I'm not saying that I love him more than the other guys, but it is definitely different. I could have orgasmed just from touching his hand earlier, the feelings so overwhelming and intense. I'm so glad that he's decided to stay with us. I was afraid for a moment that he was going to decline.

After dinner, I volunteer to do the dishes which are in a hot, soapy bath that Taehyung prepared. Even though Tia mentioned that he did the dishes this morning, he still offers to stay and help me while the others do their own thing.

"You really don't have to help me. Tia said that you've done the dishes today already. I just want to help out, you know? Earn my keep around here," I say jokingly but also meaning it wholeheartedly.

"No worries. I want to. Doing the dishes is therapeutic for me, plus, I get to spend some one-on-one time with you. I can't turn that down."

Not me blushing, now knowing that Taehyung has been wanting to spend time with me.

"Yes, it does seem like we haven't really been alone. I'm sure it's because I just joined you all and was in the introduction stage. Do you usually get to spend time with the other guys?"

"Yes, we all get to spend quality time together. Me and JK play video games and I watch movies in the theater with Jimin. Earlier, I was able to chill with Namjoon in the library," Taehyung shares.

Curiosity eats at me and I can't help but question him, "Do you guys ever-?"

"Ever what? Are you asking if we have sex?"

"W-well," his directness along with his deep voice and piercing stare makes me feel bashful under his gaze. "Yes. Do you guys have sex? Are you attracted to the other men?"

"No, we've not had sex but we are intimate when we're with Tia. I am, absolutely, attracted to the others and you. You are all so beautiful, how could I not be? There is no rule saying that we can't be together if we want, it just hasn't happened yet."

We finish up our chore while speaking about this and that. The conversation is comfortable like talking to an old friend. I rinse the last of the dishes that he then places into the dishwasher. We wipe down the countertops and stove, then sweep the floor as this is what 'cleaning the kitchen' consists of, Taehyung mentions Tia's statement from a previous conversation.

"She's super chill and doesn't ask for much, but I notice that her mood can change a bit if things aren't clean. I think clutter makes her feel overwhelmed and frazzled. That's another reason I don't mind cleaning; I want to do my part to keep her happy. She's been through so much and deserves to live a soft life."

I'm falling in love with the look in his eyes as he's mentioning Tia and I want him to be just as happy as she is. I consciously vow to make sure that I also do my part to keep that expression on all of their faces.

Jimin's POV

I am the type of person that observes, clocks things, but keeps it all to myself until others are ready to express themselves. So when I see Hoseok reach over to rest Yoongi's thigh, I look at Tia. She saw it too, judging by the knowing smirk on her face and that twinkle of mischief in her eye. I wonder what is going on between them and when she looks over at me, I raise a questioning brow to which she smiles fully.

When we finish our meals and clear the table of its dishes, Hoseok and Taehyung stay behind to clean the kitchen, Jungkook goes upstairs to shower, and Namjoon takes Yoongi on a tour of his new home. I am so excited that there will be more people to share my love with, but right now, I need to talk to Tia.

"Come here," I whisper to her and lead her down the stairs into the basement.

"What? Boy, what are you doing?"

"Well, there are a couple of things I'm curious about," I confess once we make it to the bottom of the stairs, while rubbing the back of my neck, suddenly nervous to bring this up. I really don't want to make things weird or disrupt the peace we have in this house. At the same time, she is the love of my life and I've decided to dedicate my life to her and the fellas. I should be able to be my true self and be honest with them all. "Fuck, I'm gonna grab a drink. Would you like something?"

"Honestly, I've been craving some red wine," she mentions while making her way to the theater area, taking a seat on one of the comfy chairs. "I don't know if I've developed an aversion to it after being poisoned, but I'm afraid to drink it. Does that make sense?"

"That makes perfect sense," I say while making my way to the bar area. "I'll pour you a glass from one of the bottles I brought from my house if you want."

"Yes, let's try that. If it's coming from you, I know I'll be fine."

"I figured you'd be reluctant to drink anything from the cellar. I hope you don't mind, but I threw all of the wine bottles and liquor bottles that looked tampered with away. Also any bottles that looked like they could be easily contaminated. I did bring all of the bottles I've been saving from home and I plan on replacing the ones I tossed."

"I don't mind at all. I'm touched to know that you thought about me and wanted to make sure I felt safe. You are so stinking sweet and I love you so much."

I round the corner with two glasses and the bottle of wine, nearly prancing from the affection she's expressed for me.

"Awww, babe. I love you, too!" It's not the first time I've heard it, but it makes me giddy just the same. I lean over to kiss her glossy lips before I take my seat next to her and open the bottle. "Here you go," I say and hand her the stemless glass. My heart warms when I watch her take a sniff of the liquid and close her eyes before bringing it to her plump lips. Watching her savor the drink as it washes over her tongue is damn near orgasmic and I'm trying not to drool at the sight.

"Oh my God, Jimin. This is so good and it's been so long, I could cry," she says jokingly but there is some truth behind her eyes.

"I'm glad you like it. I know how you love a good red wine so I can imagine it being tough being afraid to drink it. I'm glad I could bring you a little piece of happiness."

"A little piece? Just you being here fills my heart with so much joy," she says and leans over for another kiss.

Fuck! I want her so bad right now. Her lips, her skin is so fucking soft! Oh shit, I hope she doesn't notice.

I swear that she could just breathe in my direction and my dick would stand to salute her. I really hope she doesn't realize there's a bulge in my pants from just a little kiss. I've gotta stay focused as there are things I want to talk to her about. Taking a swig from my own glass, I think of the best way to approach the topic.

"I wanted to talk to you about last night. When we were watching that shit movie Jungkook picked, I noticed that you were a bit out of it. Your expression looked troubled, pissed even, and for some reason I feel like you're hiding something from us, like there is something you're purposely keeping from us."

"I can't sit here and say that's not true, Jiminie. There are things that I've seen in visions that I'm trying to prevent from happening. Please trust me on this and know that I will tell you all eventually, just not right now. I promise."

"I trust you baby, with all my heart. I just don't want you to struggle or suffer alone. That's what we're here for; to love you, care for you, and lessen your stress the best we can. If that means something as small as me sitting here so that you can vent, I'll do that."

"Jimin, baby, I really do appreciate you being concerned but just know that everything will be okay. I've seen things, heartbreaking things, and the only way I can stop those things from happening is to remain silent about this; at least for now. I hope you understand, in no way am I trying to be secretive," she rambles, trying to explain herself.

"Babe. Babe...shhh. I get it. You don't have to explain yourself. If this is the process you have to take, then do that. I am not questioning your honesty, I'm just worried about you," I say, placing my glass next to my feet before turning my whole body to face her, cupping my hand around hers which are still wrapped around her glass. "You don't have to share anything that you're not comfortable with, whether it pertains to your visions, your knowledge, or anything else. And with that being said," I pause a moment, looking down at our hands. "You saw it, too, earlier."

"Why, whatever do you mean?"

I look back into her eyes, amused at her trying to skate around my statement.

"You know exactly what I mean. So, is that a thing or...?"

"Hey, it's not my business to tell but I will say that I've seen that they both will be very happy here with us."

"So, you knew Yoongi would decide to stay?"

She just smiles, remaining tight-lipped, before saying, "I would hate to spoil the ending for you", then winks before kissing me one last time. I don't consider myself nosy or a gossip, so the information, or lack thereof, that she's provided will have to do. As long as they are happy, I'm fine with anything and honestly I'm just taken aback being that we've not experienced another couple within our relationship. If I'm being truly honest with myself, I've had similar thoughts. I know I could have just talked to her about it but all of this still feels weird to me. I wonder if she's seen things about me. About my desires.

Tia's POV

Yes. I saw it, but way before Jimin did. When I looked into Yoongi's eyes, I saw that he will experience a beautiful love with Hoseok. While the love we share is strong and the love they have for the others is undeniable, their love will be something special. I am over the moon and so excited to be able to experience it with them. I think by answering Jimin the way I did, it will provide privacy for Hoseok and Yoongi while also answering the questions that rest unasked beneath his eyes. I have not seen what lies ahead for him, but I can feel his hunger as well as his uncertainty. I want to maintain the trust amongst us all, allowing us to feel secure and safe to be our authentic selves. And I will do the same for Mr. Sassy Pants if he decides to date within our relationship.

Jimin has my heart and I don't think he realizes how big of a gesture and how much he touched my heart by cleaning out the wine cellar. While it may have been a small act in his mind, for me it means so much more. As a mental health professional, I can definitely see signs of PTSD within myself from my experience with those brothers, but knowing that my men care so much for me and are attentive enough to recognize and want to combat the symptoms melts me.

I've not spoken to the guys about my past before meeting them, only focusing on our present and future, but I've not had a partner to care for me or treat me so tenderly before. And if I'm being sincere, it is taking some getting used to.

I can understand what Yoongi meant when he said that this all seems too good to be true. If I hadn't seen glimpses of our future, I would be skeptical, too, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I guess my ancestors know me better than I know myself and knew that I would need to see at least a peek of the intimacy and love we will experience for each other. Even when I have my moments of doubt or possible self-sabotaging actions, a comfort comes over me that allows me to lean into the love the guys are providing instead of pushing them away out of fear of getting hurt. Every time they kiss me,all of my doubts and worries disappear, being replaced with excitement and anticipation for our many days to come.

I saw the screen recording you did for the Aemond gifset (superb work, by the way) and I was wondering if you would be open into doing a step-by-step tutorial on how you played with the colors (what was the graph on the right side of the window?) and how you manipulated the color palette when saving the gifs? Hi there, nonny! Step by step below the cut here.

I don't keep the psd files of my gifs, mostly because I don't have the storage space to do that, so I've made a different gifset of the same scene, so it should be much the same, if not better.

I believe this:

is the graph you were asking about? This is the histogram. I don't believe it has any practical usage in gifmaking. If any other gifmaker here has a different opinion, please share it. (I'm doing a photography degree, photoshop is my next unit so I'll know more about it soon)

Right, step by step. Hold your horses, this is long:

Step 1: get the clip. Some gifmakers use screen caps to make gifs. I do not know how to make them or how to use them and I find my own method works. If another gifmaker could add on how you make your screen caps, and if it is better than my own method, please add it. 😊

Where you get the clip from is a question. YouTube, somewhere else... as long as it's saved as a MP4 file on you computer/laptop, it doesn't matter. What does matter is the quality of your clips. A lot of people use 4K (super high quality) clips. I find those to be slow and arduous and may have been responsible for the fall of my old, decrepit laptop. HD or UHD are likely enough for some decent quality.

Step 2: Get the clip in the software (I use Adobe Photoshop. For some softwares, you might have to clip the clip i.e. make it shorter before just dumping it in) In Photoshop go to File > Import > Video Frames to Layers and a window will come up. Move the sliders until you have approximately what you want (don't worry about being exact. Just as long as you have what you need.) (Don't forget to click Limit to every 2 frames)

Step 3: Once the clip has opened and your ready to start, crop out any black/white edges. Then cut out the frames you don't want

Step 4: We are now ready to begin editing!! 🥳🥳🥳 Editing tends to just be a huge pile of trial and error. I have an order to things, but I often have to go back and adjust my first layers later.

I like to start with the Brightness/Contrast, for obvious reasons (I like to SEE what I'm doing *cough cough* HBO *cough cough*

The I adjust the Hue/Saturation, where I reduce the saturation of each individual colour. That reduction tends to be useful when I make further adjustments in effort to 'fix' as much of the shit colour grading as I can.

The next step is a combination of a Photo Filter (set to the default warming filter) and a Vibrance adjustment layer.

Next the where most of the magic happens. The Colour Balance allows me to adjust the colours in the shadows, midtones and highlights. The aim of this is to attempt to restore some colour. It can look a little weird when editing.

Finally is the Levels. This is a final brightness edit where I add most of my contrast.

Then, change the frame delay to 0.1, or whatever suits your fancy, but 0.1 is the most natural. Then, Click the button in the bottom left corner of the timeline which Converts to Video Timeline, then select all the layers, right click and Convert for Smart Filters.

After this is sharpening, cropping and then exporting. Either File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy) or Alt + Shift + Ctrl + S

Here I change the size. (Usually adjust the height to 540px. Width depends on how I've cropped it. I my source clip excluding black edges was in the ratio 16:9, 540px is usually half that)

If you are uploading gifs to Tumblr, keep an eye of the file size. Tumblr doesn't allow for file sizes about 10MB, although for me it's always been more like 9.5MB. If that number is too high and you have made the gif as short as possible (no more the 50 frames if possible) and you have reduced the size (my limit tends to be about 480px height dependant on my crop ratio), then you change the number of the colours from 256 to NO LESS THAN 200. (lower than this may considerably reduce your quality)

Then you press Undo or Ctrl + Z a few times until you have all of your frames again and then repeat.

And all that can take half an hour or more. Hope this answers the question as well.

how to download canva elements without pro (2 methods)!!

made this for a variety of reasons. mostly because i hate using any program that isnt ibispaint 😭 i'm pretty sure the first one will work with any editing/art program, though!

★ editing method

1. open a blank design from the "custom size" option. the size i used in both examples was 5000 x 5000

that's WAY bigger than you'd ever need. a better size is probably somewhere in the 1000-3000 range, but i was just testing it out here

2. start fitting elements onto your canvas. be smart about it and try to fit in as many as possible! don't be scared to resize elements, the quality won't be affected

working with monochrome elements

1A. what you need for this method are pure black and white elements. not all of them are by default, but you can easily recolor some of them by using the color tab here

the ones that aren't recolorable require using the effects/adjust/filter tools instead. i'll explain that in the "working with colored elements" portion since a good chunk of elements are already recolorable

either way, when you're finished, export it as a png!

2A. load it into an editing program of your choice. i personally use ibispaint, but i'm sure most art/editing programs have a similar feature

press "clear white (color)" from the three dots near the bottom, and then you're done! all you have to do from here is save as a transparent png

1B. you'll want to wait until the page is full before you start changing the colors this time. once you're done, save this version as a png, you'll need it later.

2B. now, recolor what you're able to by using the aforementioned color tool. canva already speeds up the process if you have several elements of the same color. in my case, the 6 on the lower left could not be recolored. this is where the effects/adjust/filter tools come into play!

first and foremost: if you don't see the "adjust" option at first, tap "effects" and select duotone. you'll want the select the "mono" palette near the end to make this easier. once you've done that, unselect and reselect the element again. you should be able to see the adjust option now!

change the brightness, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, vibrance, saturation, and clarity values to -100, change the blacks value to 100. this should work with most elements, but sometimes they're still too light, as pictured here:

this is easy to fix by going back into the effects tab, then duotone, then "custom". change both the highlights and shadows to pure black (remember to make sure of this, btw! you can always edit this in post if you forget), and then you're done! export this as a png and open your editing program of choice.

3B. import both of the finished versions onto the same canvas. select the "clear white (color)" option for the black and white one, then "select opacity", then select the colored version and copy that layer.

then you're done! note that the smaller the canvas, the more white artifacts you'll see around your pngs, hence why i made mine so big.

★ google docs method

this one kind of sucks to do. its good for getting the individual pngs in high quality, but its tedious, and some files will randomly corrupt for reasons i'm unsure of. i wont be spending much time explaining it as a result.

1. open a blank design. use the docs template. place in all of the elements you want (try to keep it at a relatively small amount— i usually had around 10-25 at once), and after you've done so, hit save. save it as a docx file!!!

2. open google docs and load in the docx file. you'll be able to view it without being able to download anything at this stage- that's okay!google docs should have an option to convert the file into a doc.

3. once you've done that (it took forever on mobile, i had to do it on computer instead), go to "save as" and choose the option that says "web page (html, zipped)". it'll save as a zip file with two folders inside. all you need is to unzip the one labeled "images", and you're done!

Well, to be fair, in my Au some of Vex's characteristics are based on headcanons of mine, but there's a line I cross were my Au's Vex is no longer SABA's Vex, so I'll leave a short bullet point thing that will warn if the idea is a headcanon (SABA), my Au (Au) or both (SABA/Au).

• (SABA/Au) First things first: Vex is from Carnivalia and no one can convince me otherwise. And I swear I don't even know if more people had this idea before the post from lacking-hydration that I've been seeing around, but at the time I had the idea it was completely original for me because it sparked in my head some months ago when I was playing LBPpsvita and saw this:

I think this is clearly stated in his personality and way to be.

• (SABA/Au) In SABA, I felt like Vex never showed his true potential, he's just fooling around to play a bit with us. I don't even think he takes Sackboy seriously at all! Like, even when we are fighting him, he never really gets angry until he is given physical damage, but even so, his voice tone doesn't get agrier as we are closer to defeat him. It's like if he knows he can't actually be defeated, he knows he'll just be given a ''time out''. This is why he even bothers to fake his defeat in the ''final level'', if you know what I mean. He wants to mock us, laugh in our faces the fact that he is technically inmortal, and the evidence of this statement relies on his final phrase, "As long as there are dreams, there will be nightmares", something I firmly beleive it's objectively true, not only due to the 'universe balance/ying-yan' thingy but also because nightmares ARE dreams, and since the Imagisphere can't exist without these and he's the personification of such, well... you get the point :P. Actually, this ''true potential'' thingy is one of the plot points of the development of my SABA Au's story.

• (Au) I want his redemption, but I don't think I should beleive on it since I don't see any reason (in SABA) why Vex would have a redemption arc. He enjoys being the way he is. HOWEVER, my heart still desires said event to happen u-u , and this feeling was actually boosted by one of Scarlet's dialogues in the menu of "The Knitted Knight trials", wich goes something like "(...) Yeah, it inculcated terror on every creature that dared to attack Craftworld, although almost none had a heart." (I can't really remember the exact quote rn, but u get the idea ;w;). The word ''almost '' gives away the chance of 3 possible things to happen:

1. There is a redempted villain living in Craftworld or somewhere else at the moment. We may or not have met them already.

2. Scarlet KNOWS about a certain villain that just 'acts tough' on the outside but is soft on the inside (aka. ''has a heart''). This said villain COULD be Vex, since both of them have already met before, so they have more chances of 'knowing the real other' (but I kinda doubt it)

3. Vex WAS good before some kind of 'villain making' event happened and was friends/pals with Scarlet, or at least she knew something about him, so she knows Vex ''had a heart'' at some point in his life.

However, I highly doubt that she is referring to Vex, I see the option 1 the most possible one tbh, but I think 2 and/or 3 would be pretty neat. This is kinda the limit line between the headcanon and my Au honestly.

• (SABA/Au) Is Vex related to the Uproar Dragons?

This is a question that could be given two similar answers: 'yes' and 'kinda'. The first one consists of Vex actually being the creator of said creatures, since he is ''The master/god of the Uproar", and it could also be a way to even mock further the Knitted Knights, since it would represent the typical 'knights vs. dragons' fairytale stereotype thing, so it would be a 'fun show' to watch for him when he is in this ''time out'' or just doesn't bother to come to Craftworld in person. This 'fun show' idea is based on the feeling that the Uproar Dragons don't sound much of a threat compared to Vex, since we are told that Scarlet could manage to defeat a WHOLE PACK of them, so Vex would only send them to Craftworld for the sake of sole amusement and not real will to cause true damage. He can do that himself after all. On the other hand, the second answer to this question, 'kinda', consists of Vex being related to the Uproar Dragons but not being his creator. Basing myself on what I stated before, the existence of the Uproar is not an external force(? to The Imagisphere, therefore, it is meant to exist in the universe. Due to this, the Uproar can also create stuff and beings out of their own, such as Dreams and Imagination can (the two energies that every Imagisphere's creature owes its life to), so it would be coherent if it (the Uproar) created Vex AND the Uproar Dragons, so it would mean that these two are related due to their origins, but may not be related in terms of having any kind of relationship (friendship, partners in crime, pals, etc.). Maybe they just know each other, but I don't believe they would partner up to attack Craftworld since I don't believe they would have the same purposes or objectives for doing so, but I lack of information to sustain this last part :/

• (SABA/Au) Vex KNOWS he is nessesary in The Imagisphere, and loves rubbing it on our faces. He knows we want to get rid of him, but also knows we can't, because his phylosophy is the correct one.

This also made me beleive that Vex isn't ''''completely evil'''', even if it's true that he enjoys what he's doing, he stands for what he thinks is ''correct''. He doesn't care about balance, but he KNOWS that the Uproar is necessary for life to have SENSE. He's just proving his point to everyone by providing this feeling of ''terror and exitement'' to Sackboy and other creatures, since it's objectively true that without him the events that occurred in SABA wouldn't exist, meaning there would be not a story to tell nor a ''brand new adventure'' at all! And do creators/dreamers enjoy imagining a monotonous happy life of 'x' character? No, I don't think so. We desire action. And he knows it, and a plus would be that he's actually enjoying 'his job' or role a liiittle way too much...

• (Au) His own perspective on the consequences of the Topsy Turver and the Uproar affected Sackboy:

This one is TOTALLY my Au. I highly doubt that in SABA Sackboy would ''''miss'''' Vex by any means, but in my Au, Vex changed Sackboy's perspective on life since he (Vex) got ''defeated''. Vex presented the Uproar as something exciting and fun, and he isn't lying about that IF you see it from this perspective: compare the Uproar with a rollercoaster. It is scary, true, and has lots of screams in between, true, but the fun and excitement can't be denied (unless you have some kind or phobia or smth). Due to this, Vex made ''realize'' Sackboy that the Uproar (and the God of Chaos himself) is nessesary in Craftworld's existence, specially since without 'big adventures' (provided by Vex) Sackboy's life would be monotonous and with no purpose. Damn, without Vex Sackboy wouldn't have been named a Knitted Knight nor know about Scarlet and The Knitted Knight's existence themselves! I believe that realizing this sort of things could give him (Sackboy) all sorts of internal crisis (existential and moral) that would open up doors for further manipulation that'll benefit Vex in any way.

Okay I don't care what canon says, Sonic's eyes are a dark emerald green and Amy's are a bright seafoam green.

You remember Amy's tarot cards? I think she has some minor abilities that have to do with witchy things like tarot cards, future telling, predictions, etc. That's why she tends to just KNOW where people are

Amy is very very strong, she can absolutely go toe to toe with Knuckles in hand to hand combat. I think they enjoy arm wrestling with each other, but their scores are normally tied

I also think she's the type to cheat during board games and not get caught, but also call out other people for cheating during board games since she just seems to always know ;)

Amy likes to carry Sonic to embarrass him, it's all in good fun... It's mostly fun for her.... But she would put him down if it bothered him that much

Amy can take up a whole room just by standing in it. She has a HUGE aura that everyone can feel. She's just so head strong and passionate, she's loud too, and confident. Plus her whole witch thing definitely gives her a strong aura

Amy is really in tune with people's emotions. She can feel the slightest change in people's moods which makes her really sociable and easy to be around

I think Amy dresses like,,, fairy grunge,,, if you know what that specific alternative category looks like. It has lots of long skirts paired with short crop tops, large bags, shawls or sweaters, with just a ✨dash✨ of glitter, usually earthy tones but I see her wearing a lot of white/red/green/pink (so her usual color palette)

Honestly just fairy-core in general for the most part

Amy can be naggy and a bit stand offish at times but it's just because she wants what's best for you, even if it feels like you're being treated like a kid sometimes

I also see her as the type to pack her friends lunches with cute little notes in them

Amy can't hide her emotions for shit, which is great for her friends so they all know when something is wrong.

She enjoys venting to Tails the most because she normally talks to him while he works, so all their conversations go like:

"And then he told me to GO AWAY, LIKE I DIDNT JUST SAVE HIS LIFE ! Can you believe him, Tails !?! Uhg ! He's just SO RUDE" .... "Uh huh... You're so right." .. "He should appreciate me more ! I do so much for him and what do I get back ?! NOTHING !!" .... "Uh huh... You're so right."

What can she say, she likes being told she's right.

Amy is ladylike with her mannerisms, like she sits with her legs crossed, makes eye contact when she speaks, holds her pinky out when she drinks tea, but she's not ladylike in the way she speaks. I don't think she has a big potty mouth or anything, but she can come off as rude at times. She speaks bluntly and tells you exactly how she feels, which can oftentimes lead to misunderstandings

I think Amy makes insecure men nervous, ya know like the ones who call women whores and stuff because they'll never be able to land a woman like her? Yeah, she makes those guys incredibly nervous.

Her quills are short, but if there's a will there's a way. Most of the time her quills (hair ig lol) are messy, you can normally tell when she's been busy just by the state her quills are in, but when she puts effort into her appearance?? Zoo wee mama them quills are gorgeous. Them bitches sleek, shiny, radiant

Amy in general tends to be radiant, mostly because of that mostly untapped magic she uses. I think she feels mythical when you're next to her, she feels powerful, and I love that for her

it was best i saw this ask before i started drawing anything, i was able to save my sketch for my most recent drawing, so lemme walk you through how it usually goes Under the Cut

when it comes to a character whose design im used to (like mine/daigo), the process really does go for them like this:

there's some exceptions where i be more detailed with it, especially if i've never drawn the character before. but for the most part it's pretty basic (i also tend to define the muscles more, but that's only really if i'm struggling with a pose, more skin is showing, or i want to make a Special variant of the finished drawing) since i'm so used to drawing their outfits and facial features.

then if i don't want to refine the lines and just keep it sketchy (like this), i color and shade as per usual and change the color of the lines according to the rest of the drawing's colors (i usually make them purplish or red for mine and kind of brown for daigo- it just works out best for their palettes. i also take some time to color lines on the skin reddish)

i use references all the time, whether it's for poses or characters i draw a lot. because i draw mine and daigo so much and i always want to remember specific features of their faces and have easy access to their irezumi designs, i made reference sheets for them and i always have these open when i draw them:

for poses i mostly just freehand them, but if i need help then i'll go look up stuff to help me out

CSP 2.0 features test and rant

I bought my copy of CSP in 2022 due to a variety of Wacom-caused convoluted circumstances, meaning I get the "upgrade" to version 2.0 for free. So, because I enjoy talking about (and shittalking) digital art programs....my thoughts on the "upgrade." To summarize, this update is basically the same as various pre-2022 CSP updates, adding a handful of useful and some godly-sounding features. It doesn't change anything fundamental about the program, really, although allegedly background saves are faster and more reliable now (massive dick move to lock that behind a paywall!) On this PC, I really only get lag on background saves with huge files or if I haven't saved at all for hours, so I haven't really tested that aspect. Other features are: a new brush setting that allows for allegedly more realistic color mixing, a few new 3d model options, an AI auto-shading program, and ~*~align tools ~*~ which really should have been implemented like...five years ago minimum but hey. But, hey, are these features actually as ~life changing~ as Celsys makes them sound? Traditionally no but let's find out

Upon installation I was immediately greeted by said align tools. They were just...there.

Fantastic UI decision I love it. Anyway I couldn't get this stupid window to be part of a sidebar, or treated as a tool, or anything except for a floating window. God knows why it has to be its own "palette" instead of being just a regular tool like liquify etc, but I ended up getting rid of it. figure I'll put it back whenever I need it. It seems to work fine, though in usual CSP fashion it is excessively complicated if reasonably easy to figure out.

And now the new brush color mixing setting (new brushes on the right/bottom). This was the only feature I was personally really excited for. It's something of an improvement and feels a little closer to Krita's infinitely superior painting engines. There are replacements for nearly all of the "thick paint" default brushes, some pastels, and a few assorted others. The "wet wash" brush still lags horrifically at every size even on blank canvases, just fyi.

The updated brushes have the "ver 2.0" tag. And I'm not sure if this was added in a recent update or my own faulty memory, but you can add multiple default brushes from the "add defaults" window now, thank god. I remember having to reopen the damn thing and add them one by one.

I painted this Celica entirely using the new defaults (plus design pencil for the lineart and a custom watercolor for the background, but the painting is all the defaults.) It's definitely a step up, again it feels more like Krita which is my favorite program for painting. Is it worth the upgrade price, though? For me personally, not really.

The head model seems to work well enough, it has settings to let you adjust the features and seems nicer than the various user-made options on the asset store. That being said, using and manipulating the 3d assets is as obtuse and frustrating as ever, and I personally think they make my art look incredibly stiff and robotic, so idk if I'll be using this much.

Just to illustrate how little I use the models, apparently I didn't even have them installed. I had to redownload the entire default asset set to get my hands on them so I could test out the "hand pose" thing. Basically, CSP claims that you can take a picture of your hand and have the model instantly recreate that hand pose. It doesn't look like you can just...use an existing picture. Because that would be too useful. Get posing and upload yourself to the CSP AI instead.

No pictures, because I couldn't get a shot on my shitty webcam without my face in it, but it was unimpressive. The poses were...vaguely similar to the pictures, I guess, but not exactly the pinnacle of accuracy.

This was a straight-fingered peace sign, for example. It's in the general realm of correct, but...not what I was aiming for.

I never use the text tool, for the record - I don't really do comics, and also I hate it. Even with the update, it is still not...good. Better than Krita's, maybe? At least by a bit. But still quite awful. And that's bizarre to me, because this is what was originally *manga studio*, used and promoted primarily by manga and comic artists. But its text tools suck, as well as its general graphic design capabilities.

Trying out the new fog settings...it just looks like a gradient, honestly. I'm not sure why this would ever be helpful. School-live vibes from my little experiment here (i've never watched school-live lol)

Multilayer liquify actually works decently. There's a jolt of lag when you start it and at the end when your changes register, but the actual action of moving your cursor is fairly smooth, unexpectedly. I did it with a huge stack of layers and was pleasantly surprised by the results. That being said, liquify in CSP is really finicky, and even that little bit of lag might prevent it from being a consistently usable tool in my workflow. Not sure yet.

As for the AI shading assist....

I tried a bunch of old .csp drawings and the only one I could even get it to run on was the Eunie above. And it still looked like absolute shit no matter how I messed with the settings. I could have tried to do every layer individually but I just didn't have the patience for a feature I frankly don't want, AND that's not what it was advertised for so I don't see that as a valid test anyway. I just couldn't get this one working, it looks hideous, and I have no desire to have something be shaded for me automatically. Flatting, lineart cleanup, sure! Not the lighting and creativity and stuff that's actually fun! Hard pass.

There's also a fish-eye ruler. I don't see this ever being useful for me because I honestly don't like fish-eye perspective much. Meh.

So...yeah. That's all. That's the upgrade. It's not an impressive upgrade by any means, and clearly just a handful of assorted desirable features Celsys deliberately left out of the last year or so of updates in order to try and bill them as "2.0" now. No significant improvement to the base program, just assorted bells and whistles. And of course, even if you pony up for the flat upgrade fee, you do not get access to any new features going forward. Even if they finally drop a decent selection of filters or make the text tool workable, we plebians will have to pay if we want the goods. And get any features we don't continually pay for revoked.

Wait, how does that work? Yeah, Celsys has been incredibly bad at explaining their bizarre new plans. People have no idea what's going on -- they think CSP is sub-only now, that their copies of 1.0 will be revoked, that everyone's getting 2.0 for free, that they can pay for individual updates they want...nope. TLDR: You can pay a flat price to get version 2.0 now, either as a base program or an upgrade to 1.0. Users who bought 1.0 recently (roughly mid-2022 to 2023, I believe), like me, get that upgrade for free. Alternately, you can pay a yearly or monthly fee to get not only 2.0 but any other continuous upgrades Celsys rolls out between 2.0 and 3.0 (if, say, they add better filtering options or an automatic flatting tool, you must pay for the subscription to get them.) If you at any time end that subscription, ALL updates are revoked and you return to 2.0. 3.0 will be available eventually under the same system. Mmmm microtransaction art program (except worse, you can't even keep your microtransactions and this program ALREADY HAD microtransactions through premium assets to begin with! aaaaaaa why does ibispaint have a bad reputation and not this?)

Also, bear in mind that if you upgrade your 1.0 license to 2.0, you lose your 1.0 license immediately and permanently. 1.0 licenses are for two computers and 2.0 licenses are for one. Reddit confirms that you will be forced to uninstall from one computer if you upgrade the license. So if you have CSP installed on two computers, absolutely do not upgrade, you're essentially throwing away one copy of the program to add a small handful of mediocre features to your other copy. This might be one of the most disgusting parts of the whole deal, actually, because BOY they do not make this clear up front and their little stans are defending it tooth and nail.

So, what's the pricing plan for all this? Um...honestly, I'm not sure. I'm navigating the website right now trying to figure it out and I am totally, utterly lost. The plan is distributed across several pages, and I suspect Celsys is relying heavily on machine translation, so things are...slightly incoherent. I believe it's only $10/year for the PRO (not EX, which is $30) upgrade pass, which isn't unreasonable on the surface, but the "revoke features if you don't keep paying" bit sure is. Not to mention how many user-made assets will be inaccessible to those without the same versions as the creators, or how people's 2.1+ files may break if that person stops paying for their subscription...like, they don't deserve even $1 for pulling this shit and I'm really disappointed by the huge number of users I see not only buying into but defending this awful shit.

Celsys is clearly trying to be the next Adobe, gently easing their users into being forced to go fully subscription-only. We'll see how that works out for them, but I think they are drastically overestimating the loyalty of their userbase, the lack of alternatives, and their rate of use in the professional industry (unlike Adobe, nobody is mandating CSP in graphic design college courses....) They're slowly boiling the frog as we speak -- we'll see how long the userbase can stand it. Personally, I would suggest just waiting for 3.0 - nothing in this upgrade is exceptional, and I wouldn't assume anything else the devs put out for the next couple years is.

5. Behind the Scenes at the Sports Festival

LISTEN. She's so cute. I love her outfit and her pose and I wish this were a 4-star with outfit. But I also will take this version. Honestly I always consider using it over my 4-star Happy attribute Ena (I Don't Want to Give Up) in those events because as much as I like that card this one is just. SO good and I love it

4. feat. Kuromi

I like both the untrained and trained for this one so it was really hard picking one. This card is just so obviously cute and every day I wait anxiously for this gacha to come to EN, 60k crystals and 10 vouchers already saved. I don't know Kuromi but I would die for her and it seems like she wants me to

3. A Cancelled Message

This is 100% my love for Metamorphosis coming through with the apple but this card is also just really beautifully lit and I love the flowers. This is one of 2 3-star Ena cards I have and I'm so glad for it, it's amazing

2. Peaceful Moments, if Nothing Else

This was initially lower (#4) but the more I look at it the more I want to put it higher. The outfit looks SO cute in this card, the background is amazing w/ the flowers, cool floor, and the books strewn everywhere. The colors look great for all they Should Not Work. And I see those apples drawn in some of the books, which reminds me that this card is associated with Immiscible Discord and Samsa, the best song in the game. Every part of this card fills me with joy the longer I look at it and notice things

I Want to Capture That Expression

Okay. So. Backstory time.

I used to play Project Sekai a little bit close to when it came out; at least a bit before the first New Year's event, with VBS Miku. I did not use energy and I could barely do expert, but I had fun. Unfortunately my device couldn't handle it very well and started to crash frequently, and at the time I was into Vocaloid but not quite enough to recognize most of the songs or seek them out outside the game? So I quit, and that account is now lost to the mists of time.

Then I came back last November while this event was going on. I was honestly planning to reroll a few times (sorry) so I would have an easier start, and I wanted a Miku card from preferably N25 or WxS. But instead I got this Ena, and I considered rerolling but didn't go through with it because I liked this card on its own merits enough. And you know what, I was right! This Ena card is really really good - the outfit it comes with is my favorite in the game (at least the Ena version with face decorations and the headpiece), with a really nice purple/bright color palette, and her expression is great - I like cards where the character is smiling and having fun, especially for avatar purposes. Plus it includes that really cool sketch of Mafuyu and a bunch of other fun background details (like the Kanade card's headphones in the back).

I do think this card deserves the #1 spot on my list for aesthetics/card icon alone, BUT it does also have that sentimental value to me as one of my first 4-stars on this new account & for helping motivate to look at characters and their cards again separate from my old opinions :)

HONORABLE MENTIONS: basically all her other cards but especially hers from World Link, This Claw's Too Weak!, and The Best Angle for the Perfect Pic (just for how cute the untrained is with N25 all together...)

I’m sorry to ask this, but I love how you color your art! Do you have a tutorial that you can share to show us how you do it? Or know of any videos we could follow along with? Your coloring looks so soft and I’d love to try it out!

Okay, I'm not sure if you're asking for the technical aspect of my coloring process or the process in which I pick colors?

Either way, I feel like the best way I could do a tutorial is through a video and I currently don't have enough energy for doing that right now. However, I can talk about it a bit.

As far as picking colors goes, I often look up color palettes on google and tumblr to find different color combinations that I like, or different shades of the same color. I save them all to my reference folders and when I have specific colors in mind that I want to use, I pick out ones closest to what I need. I love saturated colors as much as the next guy, but I still try to pair them with less saturated tones to balance it out. When I make character designs, I think about what aspects of the character I want to stick out, and what kind of vibe I want their palette to give off. The more you think about your character's personality, or what kind of vibe you want to have, it can help set a foundation for exploring color palettes.

Side note, I'd really love to ramble about my thought process behind different character designs that I've made, but I've made so many that its hard to pick a place to start. If anyone wants to ask more specific questions about that, feel free to.

When it comes to picking colors for shading, my go to colors are usually purple, magenta, and blue. Though there are a few instances where I've used orange or red. I've used various highlight colors in my time, any light shade will do.

As far as technique is concerned I should mention that I use Clip Studio Paint for my artwork, nowadays. When I color, I try to set up the base colors for different aspects of the piece, such as skin, shirt, jacket, pants, boots, accessories, sclera, irises, and hair. This is a good reason for labelling and organizing your layers when you do artwork. I separate stuff this much so it becomes easier to manage different pieces, once I get to shading.

Tools I use for putting in the base colors are the following: Lasso tool, wand tool, and paint bucket tool.

When it comes to actually comes to coloring, I'll use the wand tool to select the whole canvas outside of the lineart, like so:

You may be able to see the selection line going along, around the outside of the lineart. Once that's done, I expand the selection area. This can vary, depending on how big your art piece is and the size of the pen you want to use. Whatever size I'm using for the piece, I always try to expand the selection by 1 point less than half. So if I use a pen tool that's a size 12 thickness, I'll expand the selection area by 5 pixels.

After expanding the selection area, I'll use my lasso tool to sharpen any corners that became too round for the selection area to make it passed lineart. This is an important step for making sure the colors don't appear outside the lines.

Once that's done, I can invert the selection and use the paint bucket tool to color the whole character with the base skin color. From there, I'll keep doing that until I get all the base colors down.

If you want to add gradients or blush, you can create clipping layers on your base layers to add more detail to each piece.

I love clipping areas because you don't have to feel restrained by the shape of the base piece. You can add gradients, blurrs, and go off the lines and not have to worry about it showing up outside of whatever they're clipping. From there, its all about messing with opacities and layer effects to get what you're looking for.

You can do this with your base pieces and lineart and it can bring a softness to it.

Unless I have a specific light source in mind, I'm usually not too worried about shading. I usually try to shade places that I know definitely have some light blocked from them, and have fun with it from there.

I think its important to mention that not every art piece has to have a single light source because that's not how irl lighting and shadows always work. There's also ambient lighting that comes from the light bouncing off of other objects. A piece can have multiple light sources, or a light source can be spread across an art piece.
