I just realized...
Alphonso and Jayme seemed to be super friend. at least the closest they could be with their familial situation. maybe it's just me but they seemed to be truly friend.
and they were number 4 and 6.

i wonder if one of the reasons why the characters in OFMD feel so real and deep and true is how they cast them: they were told to improvise their backstories in their audition
not only does that mean there's none of that "I know the truth of your character but you dont :)" that a few shows do to their actors (agents of shield springs to mind. when the season 1 betrayal happened, they told the actor when they filmed the episode before rather than letting him know from the start so he could interweave some of The Truth into his acting. another example would be game of thrones where they didnt bother to give either emilia clarke nor kit harington any kind of heads up that their characters were going down the paths they were going down, they just had to be invested and believe both characters were the heroes and then bam) but also it means the actors are very invested in those backstories and are holding those backstories in their heads through every scene
i've seen some people joke that the whole show feels like they were just running a dnd campaign and we're just lucky enough to get to watch, which is so funny but there's definitely a lick of truth there. people who play dnd get to write out their character's backstories and know where they came from and almost have the memories their characters have. it makes it so much easier to keep those characters consistent that way, because you know where they came from and how they'd react to certain situations
and then on top of that, you have the fact that although David Jenkins is writing the show (obviously), it's very, very clear that he accepts all the input of his actors about their own characters because he knows they know them. he even said he isn't a big fan of improv and is a very "by the script only" kind of guy, but he let that all go for OFMD and look how good it ended up!
so instead of one head writer having to hold onto all the info and backstories for all the characters, including stuff he hasn't bothered to tell them yet, the actors get to help out
they get to keep everything consistent and sensible (well, within the realms of OFMD) together
and then finally you have the fact they all have their backstories in their own heads, and so if they want to throw a little improv into a scene to add to the scene, those adlibs are consistent to the character both they and the writers know
i think that's why there is so much to dissect and look into and meta about in this show. i mean just look at izzy and his ring on his tie and the tattoos they picked for him. there's no way in hell that con o'neill doesn't know the meaning of every tattoo and the ring and whatever is hiding under izzy's glove or sleeves or whatever, so whatever he adds to any scene is born from all of those things
and i just think that's so neat

omg thank you for being the first normal person I've seen so far about AI who's also an artist T-T like obviously all the stealing is horrible and it's good it's talked about but almost everyone really is acting like the idea of computers being capable of creating images killed their firstborn child
(also I don't mean it as one of the weird AI art bros but as an artist myself I'm just glad that there are other artist with open mind to the concept)
no right like its insane to me to see how many other people who seem reasonable and level headed are falling for the kneejerk response to say ai Isn't Art Can't Be Art ! It's throwing out the baby with the bathwater to an almost incomprehensible degree.
Unfortunately the fact of the matter is that we live in an era where essentially all new technology's first and prime purpose will be for ghoulish, capitalistic, anti-human ends. But to reject any other uses for the technology doesn't do anything other than make you look like an anti-tech weirdo. This is genuinely insanely impressive and revolutionary tech! There are a TON of legitimate artistic uses for AI image generation.
It also seems weird that everyone is delving into this false binary of 'dont use AI, learn to draw' as if there is any conceivable reason for these things to be mutually exclusive? Like, before all of the AI discourse really popped off i was doing some experimenting with using AI in my process.
Tumblr media
the texturing used in this drawing was made by VQGAN + Clip (different type of image generation than the stable diffusion model that is producing most of the AI art that's up for debate right now) running through google colab. I made a bunch of these weird, ethereal images that would have been almost impossible for me to produce under my own power - it would have taken a titanic amount of time, effort, and design to produce any of these through illustrative or photo editing techniques.
Tumblr media
here's a sampling of some of the textures i made. Now I think it would be a real struggle to try and claim that these images made are plagiarisms. However, I stopped messing with the google colab generation for one key reason: i didnt know enough about the image databases being used to train these models. That's the real stumbling block
the internet is CHOCK FULL of images that are free to use commercially and repurposes, there's stuff like wikimedia commons, the smithsonian open access, unsplash and pexels which have free stock photos, etc. I honestly think a nonzero amount of artists would consent to having some of their work used in image generation databases if they were promised noncommercial use of the resulting images, also. But the problem is the people training these AI don't give a shit about any of that. It's just the complete entitlement to other people's work and neglect for creative boundaries that makes AI generation bad.
The fact that people are attempting to replicate the art of living, working artists, or people like kentaro miura who by all accounts were so dedicated to the craft that they worked themselves to death sickens me. And the fact that the companies responsible for this are using that as an active selling point for their product is even worse. It's a pretty miserable time to be an artist, and this is just the icing on the cake.
But I don't want silicon valley greed and bizarre, impotent jealousy from redditors who want custom waifu jpgs to mean that nobody who could really benefit from AI image generation gets to use it.
like, my dad for example. he's been a creative person his whole life but it never really went anywhere. He drew a lot as a kid and then went and got a degree in filmmaking. My parents were living in LA when I was born, with my dad managing a filming/sound studio and the two of them trying to break into writing screenplays. This did not happen because they had three kids, and for the past decade and then some my dad had been doing database programming on contract for the CDC. Now, in his mid 50s, he's finally got a permanent and secure position and, rather than spending all his free time raising children or getting PMP certified to try and angle for a string of promotions, he can start having hobbies again. there's a comic he's been wanting to draw for as long as I can remember.
only, one big problem - in 2021 he had surgery on his cataracts and never healed properly. He's got severely impaired vision and looking at stuff too hard for to long causes him a ton of eye strain and pain. He has to look at a lot of screens for his job so by the time he's off work for the day he's pretty much too fatigued to do all the intense visual stuff it'd take to make a comic.
I wanted to tell him AI image generation could help him make the kind of stuff he always dreamed about making as a kid but instead I had to tell him that as it stands, the predatory nature of AI modeling means it's insanely hard to use it without ripping off vulnerable creatives. Instead we chatted a bit about combining 3d assets, digitally edited photos, or photobashing/digital kitbashing methods to try and make a pipeline he could do without drawing, but the time commitment to learn these methods is probably just not feasible unless his eyes make a pretty unprecedented recovery in future years.
Like, that's the worst thing about all of this. The idea that AI makes the production of certain kinds of art more accessible to people with disabilities isn't just a 'gotcha' being used by the pro-AI people, it's also true. I would love for my dad to be able to make his comic. I myself also have a huge string of health issues and sometimes the main thing stopping me from drawing is that it hurts to do so. Anything in my process that could reduce the strain drawing puts on my body is an accessibility concern in some ways. Eventually degrading so much that I can't draw at all is one of my biggest fears.
But that doesn't counter all of the negatives! It just doesnt! Which fucking sucks man it just sucks so fucking bad that we have this cool incredible thing and we can't use it without being complicit in some stuff i am fully ideologically against! As things stand I really cant imagine that 'ethical' AI image generation will ever exist, so unfortunately it will have to be in the hands of the people using it to decide for themselves if they are using it in a way that is predatory or harmful, or as a legitimate tool to make meaningful works of art.

Watching yellowjackets was so fucking heartbreaking, Javis death genuinely did something to me, not just because he was young and scared and alone and yearning for his brother to save him, but because I've seen this story play out before.
when Javi didn't pick the queen and he stayed composed until he ran into his brothers arms and hugged him and Travis whispered "it's okay, it's okay we're okay,"
YOUR HONOUR I THINK IVE SEEN THIS FILM BEFORE AND I DIDNT LIKE THE ENDING, THOSE ARE THE MFING BLACK BROTHERS RIGHT THERE
and then Javi fucking DROWNED and i just lost all internal peace right there
WHY THE FUCK CAN THOSE BOYS NOT FIND STABILITY IN ANY UNIVERSE, THEY DESERVE SO MUCH MORE THAN THE WILDERNESS AND THE DEATH EATERS AND THE LAKE AND THE INFRNI AND THE OLDER BROTHER HAVING TO GO ON WITHOUT TJE YOUNGER UNTIL HE DIES FROM THE VERY THING THAT KILLED HIS BROTHER ALL THOSE DECADES AGO

Can I just throw out there that this episode is the perfect reason why alot of us (including you) always say speculating to much will just make you get let down. It was an episode full of goodness but some people will only concentrate on the fact Chris didnt stay home with Buck or Eddie didn't come out to his parents.
My personal take before was that of course Chris gloes with Eddie and this seasons theme has been parenting. I felt it was easiest to assume this would be about parenting
Also so well done opening with soft comfortable Buddie. Buck not afraid to call Eddie on his BS. Picking up Pepa. How cute Eddies face was when he called for Chris.
Side note to I think Chris needed to absent from Bucks storyline with Taylor. You mentioned the scene with his arm behind her but to me there was actually more.. They seemed to intentionally make her seem smaller and maybe more frail and yet they didn't have Buck act how he normally would in that situation when he was the bigger one. The protector. You contrast it with Jee and Maddie and its blaring you know.
Anyways I went a lottle off track there sorry. Loved your meta this week!
Hi lovely!
Absolutely this. Let’s take Chris staying with Buck. I get wanting that (I would love it, too) and with everything we’ve seen so far in the Buddifer family unit, it wouldn’t be out of place.
But at the end of the day, I think a big part of how the ep was constructed was tied to Gavin not being available to film for it. Think about it, had Chris stayed with Buck, we would have never been okay with him being constantly only referred to, while being absent from our screens (having fallen asleep in the car or being in the other room). We would have wanted to see it! I’m not sure we wouldn’t have been just as disappointed, if not more so. Also, Buck needed to be involved with Taylor, Chim and Hen in this ep, to set up the B/T break up. That was good stuff! But it worked better without Chris there. Plus, when we will one day get to see Chris staying with Buck like that, it would be so much better to not have to see someone like Taylor being a part of that, awkwardly trying to interact with Christopher as well. I also absolutely agree with you that everything between B/T in this ep was off.
And as you’ve said, what Eddie was going through in ep 517 had everything to do with cross-generational parenting, he’s a mirror image of his dad despite not wanting to. Mentioning Chris is there, even if we don’t see him on screen, is a good reminder for casual viewers that Eddie’s thinking of who he is, as a son and as a father, when he looks at his dad. It was needed. So yeah, I think what we got worked well, and better than the alternative.
Thank you so much for the kind words about my meta, and for expanding the dialogue about this ep! I enjoyed it so much. Have a great day! xoxox
(I got an influx of asks, I WILL answer all of them, but it might take a sec. If anyone wants to check whether I've already answered theirs or to read my replies, here's my ask tag. Thank you! xoxox)

hey i wanted to ask! bc i remember you saying how you felt about spuffy but you hadn't rewatched s7 yet. did that affect how you saw them at all? also if you're okay answering, what do you think of seeing red? I've recently begun to think of it as. kind of out of character. like i know spuffy was downward spiraling but it kind of felt like seeing red was "what should we have happen so that things get super bad and spike goes and gets a soul" and not actually something that spike would. have really done? idk. I'm not a spuffy fan but i do think things about that episode
i still havent actually rewatched s7 lol i had been rewatching s6 back in march last year but stopped right before riley showed up again and didnt get around to picking it back up haha. ill probably think about doing a full series rewatch and liveblog after i graduate college (so sometime during the summer) and actually try to get through to the end
that being said i have not actually sat down and rewatched seeing red since the first time i watched the series. so. almost a decade ? at this point ? if thats any indication of how i feel about that episode. it has been a while. its on par with the body in terms of episodes that i never really want to rewatch (though for completely different reasons, obviously) more thoughts below
the way i tend to view seeing red is that of poorly thought through shock value writing. i agree with you in that it feels like a writers decision to have the worst thing happen in order to motivate spike to seek his soul, and not something that feels correct to the character. already by that point you have spike reflecting on their tryst and realizing the way things were was not making either of them truly happy, so it would not take that much prodding for him to realize something had to change. there are other ways to get spike to his breaking point without having to subject buffy to sexual violence. even though their relationship was volatile and played with gray areas of consent, i never got the impression that spike would truly violate buffy's consent. i think writing in an attempted rape affects the way the audience views them on a much deeper level than the writers were expecting. because, a lot of the trauma that buffy endures through the show, while very real to her, has a fantasy element that places a layer of separation from the audience. most people cannot understand the despair of having to send your boyfriend to actual Hell, or the betrayal of being ripped from actual Heaven by your friends. but there are members of the audience who do know the terror and betrayal of sexual violence by their partner. so i think that aspect wasnt taken into serious enough account when deciding to have your main characters love interest and general audience favorite do something so realistically deplorable. thats why i think it was mainly a shock value decision rather than based in any way the character would actually act. not even to mention the fact like. most everyone else in the production hating having to film it and james marsters has said because of SR he will never do a scene like that ever again he hated it that much.
from the refresher ive seen of s7 (from people gifsets and spuffy scenes and meta about spike, the soul, and buffy etc) i wish we had got more of a buildup to a true spuffy reconciliation. there is so much happening in s7. so much that a lot tends to get lost or not as much time focused on in order to get to the very end. i do really think that buffy was incredibly moved and touched by spikes decision to get his soul back. personally i think the choice to get the soul is more impactful than the soul itself, as it demonstrates how remorseful spike is over the AR and his willingness to atone for it without expecting anything in return. and how buffy recognizes that and thats why shes able to forgive him and let him back into her life. but because there are only 22 episodes to fit plot into the reconciliation happens just. a little too quick. i had wished that. idk. it happened over 2ish seasons? so we see spike struggling to reconcile with his soul just a lil bit longer and him settling with it and buffy seeing that struggle while still wanting him around. idk. a lot of my problems with s7 come from pacing issues. while i have my problems with s7 as a whole, i do generally like the spuffy progression in it, even if i wanted it to take a lil longer. in all of buffys past relationships, there are things that happened that make her believe that she is somehow responsible for her partners turning bad, or thinking she is somehow lesser for being with them. but learning that spike got his soul back for her, something she views as essential and good, it shocks her that she could inspire someone to change that much for the betterment of themselves. and because of that she can truly trust him enough to love him completely.
so like long story short i hate that seeing red involved sexual violence and i wish there had been some other way to get to the point of spike realizing he needs to change, but considering the way s7 went i dont think it changes my perspective on their relationship that much. i think spike and buffy are one of the most interesting relationships on the show just by how much they change themselves and each other by being in their lives, and thats why im so invested in them

Fantasy Month :Thoughts on Hadestown Broadway soundtrack
Hadestown is a musical tells the Greek myth of the musician Orpheus traveling to the under world to find his love Eurydice ,but with kind of a Great Depression in the American south feel to it,though it is intentionally very vague about its setting
I've known about this musical for a few years ,before it went to Broadway.I've liked the few songs I have heard but for whatever reason I hadnt listened to the full thing
Now I am only talking about what I feel based on the soundtrack as I have not seen the show,,,,,But I really want to,cause this musical is great .
Now back when I was younger ,I was a Greek myth nut ,and I am fond of this myth, which has been told many times. My favorite version is actaully the 1959 film Black Orpheus .....But this is a close second .I think it sells the tragedy of the story (Not a spoiler they tell you right at the begining and its a tale famous for how it ends ),with how Orpheus and Eurydice change as the story goes on .I also like the conncetion between the young mortal lovers Orpheus and Eurydice and the two godly older lovers Hades and PErsephone
Gonna be honest though, our protagonists are my least favorite part musically .No offense to Reeve Carney and Eva Noblezada ,they do a great job,its just some of their songs just didnt grab me (With some exceptions ) .Also didnt care for the Fates at all
What sells the show for me are the Gods :HErmes, Persephone and Hades .Andre De Shields gives a scene stealing performance as Hades and is my favorite character ,Amber Gray is marvelous as Persephone, and the always good Patrick PAge makes for one hell of a villain as Hades (Possibly my favorite depiction of Hades ).I really dug Persephone and Hades relationship and honestly the moment that got me emotional was between them in Wait For Me reprise
As for songs lets go a ranking my top 10
10.Flowers
9.Way Down to Hadestown
8.Livin It On Top
7.Hey Little Song Bird
6.Our Lady of the Underground
5.Why We Build the Wall
4,His Kiss the Riots
3Road to Hell +Reprise
2.Epic I,II,III
1.Wait For Me
Overall I do very much recommend this musical ,I had a lot of fun listening to it
@ariel-seagull-wings @amalthea9 @the-blue-fairie @princesssarisa @metropolitan-mutant-of-ark @themousefromfantasyland @angelixgutz @filmcityworld1
