I'm very frustrated with how the various youtubers and streamers talk about Ben Shapiro.
Because they do not understand or have the proper context when talking about him and everything he represents.
They also often go into antisemitic territory when mocking him, while it is unintentional and something they may not not even know they are doing, they are doing it none the less.
When they mock his voice or call him Shabibo that is actually antisemitic territory.
Due to a history of Jewish people having our names stripped from us and voices and names mocked. Now I too find his voice to be personally annoying, but I won't mock it because of said history.
It is not about the curtsy that Ben Shapiro deserves or doesn't deserve, but rather about deciding when it is okay to employ antisemitism against a Jewish person.
The answer is never.
The overwhelming majority of these commentators are not Jewish and the few that are Jewish don't seem to know any of the important details that make what Ben Shapiro says so dangerous for all Jews and such a false representation.
See what is not presented in discussions about him is that Ben Shapiro is not there to pull in a Jewish audience he is there as a token Jew to help further pull in an christian audience.
That is what makes it all so very insidious in nature. And sadly some Jewish people get fooled by this too because they do not look beyond the front facing facade he wears like costume, but they do not actually listen the words he says.
Ben Shapiro harps about a 'war on christmas' which no Jewish person would seriously do or care for. Especially any Ashkenazi Jews with our very long long history of being murdered in mass on xmas. Christmas eve is became seen a spiritually impure night that it would be called Nittle Nacht in Yiddish and Jewish people would purposefully not study Torah that night.
American Jews, like many others who belong to non-christian religious and cultural groups, have to deal with living a majority Christian country and country that culturally Christian and only makes concession for Christianity.
Has Ben Shapiro ever talked about that or the actual fights to get time off for our Holidays? No because that doesn't fit the narrative. But business having employees switch from 'merry christmas' to 'happy holidays' most certainly does.
Ben Shapiro has explicitly stated that he believes that conception is when life begins which is something to no in keeping with any Jewish held belief anywhere.
We hold life begins at first breath, the mother comes first (I wrote mother because that is wording used in the various writings, but really it would be the pregnant individual comes first), and that it doesn't just need to physical health on the line it can also be one's mental health at stake in order to need an abortion
Ben Shapiro talks about Judeo-Christan values, which a bullshit term that was created after the Holocaust to make it seem like Christian Antisemitism played no role in what happened and that the Church was not a guilty party. It is also a term that essentially holds Jewish people hostage.
He uses this term and talks about these shared values. So I have to ask what values?
Is respecting the elderly, caring for the sick, kindness to others, tending to the poor, and such? Because those are universal values and can be found in pretty much every culture and religion.
What about original sin? Heaven and Hell? Can someone be the literal child of G-d? Does G-d have literal hands, a actual face? What is the gender of G-d?
Just some questions to start with since you know we clearly have the same values and stuff.
Because Judaism would say: No such thing as original sin and in fact Hebrew doesn't have a word for sin we have words that mean things that wrongly translated in English as sin, but no, word for sin. We hold all people are born blank we go through and have experiences and make choices and those choices speak to who we are.
We believe in This World and The World to Come and the spiritual washing machine so to speak, but no a big nope to heaven and hell. No to Satan too. There is the HaSatan which means prosecutor who is as the name means in the Ultimate Court.
When we say "we are the children of G-d" it is poetic flourish and is metaphorical not literal no one can be the literal hild of G-d.
Same way we anthropomorphize G-d so that we have an easier time contextualizing G-d because otherwise it can be hard to wrap your mind around.
G-d is both genderfull and genderless at the same time. It depends on what you are talking about, in what context, and what aspect of G-d of you using. For example the Voice G-d and Presence of G-d are both in the feminine in Hebrew.
These have just been a tiny amount of examples from a vast vast array them.
My point is that if all these people are going to talk about Ben Shapiro especially ones with large followings please bring on someone who is actually knowledge and qualified to talk about this so the facts can properly be presented and explained.
Like I on occasion will listen to Leftovers podcast in background it hosted by Ethan from H3H and Hassan Piker and in the most recent episode that I was listening, which I had to stop because I was getting to annoyed by, they where talking about Ben Shapiro.
It was very frustrating for me. I get that Hassan might be very politically involved and knowledge about stuff, don't really know I don't watch him, but I was thinking the whole time that this is not an area you know.
You are talking about Jewish stuff and things related Jewish views points and you have no clue what you are talking about. You are talking about a religion and culture you just don't know anything about and are trying to debunk Ben Shapiro.
It will not work because you don't have necessary information and understanding to do so.
And you are missing the biggest point of it all which is again Ben is there as a draw for Christians. Because for these kinds of Christians having a Jew give a stamp of approval gives it some kind veneer of legitimacy.
It validates them and allows them to not have to feel guilty for crimes against Jewish people that they are party too.
This doesn't mean they like Jews or want us around or interested in our problems or helping us.
It is all about them in the same way they have Candace Owens tell them all the thing they want to hear so they never have to self-examine or reflect on anything and can assuage their white-guilt and keep of being horrific anti-Black.
They don't care about Black people or Black issues because they listen to a Black woman talk.
It is all for self-serving interests that they have been Ben and Candace there. While many seem to get that point (if you didn't get it before well get it now) in regards to Candace Owens and the purpose of her employment they miss that very important detail when comes to Ben Shapiro.

alright let’s talk about Lockwood & Co vs Adults
(mostly about the show, I started the books before the show came out and I’m not done, be nice)
Lockwood tries so very hard to act older than he is and he essentially Had To after losing his family. We aren’t told the specifics, but he doesn’t seem to have any adults in his life. Or many people in it period. George has only known him for a year, Flo used to live with him but hasn’t for at least a year if not more, and Kipps is. well. Kipps.
But other than that he seems to have been alone: he’s the one who takes care of the business and the finances, finding new clients and recruiting new agents (he has a mortgage and insurance and he can’t even drive yet). It fits with the overarching theme of the older generation not just failing the newer one, but exploiting it too. Lockwood was abandoned by the generation that was supposed to take care of him (on purpose or not)--just like all the kids of his generation, George and Lucy included.
It’s a little simpler when it comes to George and Lucy. They both left their families by choice; they chose to be the mature ones, to do what they had to so they could feel safe and at home. George left parents who loved him, but didn’t understand him. Lucy left a physically abusive mother who exploited her for money. They’re both mature in very concrete, measurable ways that are natural extensions of their characters. George cleans and cooks and handles research. Lucy is emotionally mature, holding both boys (and people in general) accountable for their actions and making her able to pick out incredible nuances in emotion (of both the living and the dead).
But Lockwood’s maturity feels a little more like play-acting than the others. Partly, I think, because he didn’t get a choice. He’s been functionally an independent adult for god knows how long. He dresses in suits and is entirely too formal (in the books it takes forever for him to stop calling Lucy ‘Miss Carlyle’). But you can tell that it is definitely an act. His tie and trousers are too short, his coat is too big, and, god bless him, he wears the most beat up pair of sneakers I’ve ever seen.
His interactions with actual adults become a flashpoint. It’s most obvious in his interactions with adult men (partly just because most of the adults in the show are men), who he is trying so hard to look and act like. But in every case, they call him out on it and he’s reminded how young he is and almost always in a way that hurts.
The most obvious are Fairfax, Winkman, and what’s-his-face with the gold sword and guyliner, who are trying to kill him. In all cases, Lockwood can’t physically overpower them (Fairfax and Guyliner have guns, Winkman has an electric chair) and his words don’t mean anything to them. And Guyliner is even more dangerous because he knows his parents, knows something about the story behind Lockwood’s armor.
But what’s more interesting are the adults who aren’t trying to kill him.
Barnes picks apart the arguments Lockwood throws up in defense of himself and his agency, not with posturing, but with genuine (although rather harsh) concerns for their safety. For Lockwood, Barnes is a Captain Hook figure, but Barnes acts more like a disgruntled school principal than anything else. He’s working to protect a whole city full of kids that are, by necessity, thrown into harm’s way. And you can see it when Lockwood says that Barnes doesn’t like them much and it throws him off-guard.
The DEPRAC agent at the auction tells them to leave not just because he thinks they can’t handle it, but because they shouldn’t have to
Jesus, you’re children
Yes, he’s aggressive and antagonistic about it, which only makes Lockwood bristle more. Lockwood steps towards him trying to act with authority, even threatening, but all the agent does to break his armor is grab him hard by the shoulder and push him back. But despite that, he is trying to protect them. And he dies to protect them. It is the only instance of someone truly seeing them for what they are: kids. Not agents or weapons or meal tickets.
But it’s jarring. Lockwood can’t process any of that and that’s not his fault. In the world we’ve seen so far, Barnes and the DEPRAC agent are an anomaly. Most other adults don’t care whether they live or die (so long as they’re useful). Lockwood has every reason to believe that every adult is an obstacle at best and a threat at worst.
And it’s painful. All of it. And a little too close to home, this story of children only valued when they’re useful.

Red Hot: The Slow Slow Burn of Jane and Lisbon (Walter Mashburn Edition)
Tumblr media
I just finished re-watching Red Hot (3x07), and I have some thoughts about Lisbon and her aborted love affair with Walter Mashburn.
I admit that I didn't like it that [spoiler] Lisbon had a one-night stand with Mashburn. I enjoy the character. Mashburn was entertaining, charming, and likable in a whimsical sort of ruthless way, and Currie Graham had great chemistry with both Simon Baker and Robin Tunney. It would have been interesting if he had made more appearances on the show. But I felt it was out of character for Lisbon to just take him for a quick spin and then never see him again. And obviously he's a horrible romantic bet. The writers make that clear when they introduce him.
And then I realized that's the point.
During the 7 seasons of The Mentalist, in the course of their investigations, Lisbon and Jane meet hundreds of people, and Walter Mashburn is quite unique among them. He and Jane hit it off right away, despite the fact that Jane suspects him of being a possible murderer. Mashburn immediately understands exactly who Jane is ("You're a psychic, aren't you?").
youtube
He succinctly sums up Jane's entire raison d'etre the second time they meet.
Walter Mashburn: Oh, I know you're a charlatan as I said. You lost your wife and kid to a serial killer, your fault you think. And now you're on this hopeless quest for redemption. Battling evil and injustice, right?
Patrick Jane: Close enough.
Walter Mashburn: You play mind games with people. You size up their weaknesses, and then you give them the rope to hang themselves.
Patrick Jane: Oh, you make it sound so cool.
Mashburn happily goes along with all of Jane's schemes because he's essentially bored being the smartest, most danger-seeing, risk-taking person in the room all of the time. He enjoys new experiences.
Tumblr media
Mashburn also has a thing for revenge. When we meet him a second time it's because he's in the process of destroying an old enemy, Yuri Bajoran. He's maneuvered a hostile buyout of his business, Yuri's "baby," because Yuri once stole the woman he loved away from Mashburn.
Playful. Ruthless. Brilliant. Charming. Hedonistic. Risk taking.
You get where I'm going here. He's Patrick Jane. Minus the trauma.
Mashburn is what Jane was trying to become before his wife and child were murdered. He was chasing fame and fortune. He was ignoring his wife's desire to live a straight life because he was having too much fun indulging himself.
And then, because of Jane's arrogance and carelessness, Red John deliberately targeted Angela and Charlotte for destruction, and Jane had to do a massive internal restructuring of his priorities.
When we first meet Jane, he's still playful, charming, ruthless, brilliant, and risk taking. But now he has a mission, and that suicide mission for revenge takes precedence over ever other thing. He's no longer self indulgent. He's sublimated his hedonistic urges, including his sexuality, to give himself greater focus. The only thing that matters is hunting down and killing Red John.
Then he meets Teresa Lisbon.
Lisbon is a soulmate. She has survived her own crucible of trauma, and she has a critical understanding of (and empathy for) broken, hurting men. She understands that Jane is off-limits romantically. He's shut down. He may flirt and charm out of habit or need, but the part of him that could give something to a relationship is no longer operational. There is an attraction between them, but it's impossible.
That impossibility is the reason they allow themselves to get so close and eventually care so deeply for each other.
Because Teresa is extremely skittish. She's a bolter. She left Chicago because she felt tied down taking care of her father and brothers. She abandoned her fiance when things got too serious between them. She's afraid of commitment. To her commitment feels like slavery, and she doesn't want that. She's afraid of that.
But that doesn't mean that she's not attracted to Mashburn. She has a type: she likes charming, ruthless bad boys who don't follow the rules. She knows they're bad for her, but she can't help it. That's her thing.
When she meets Walter, he immediately tells her he's attracted to her and available.
Tumblr media
He asks her out. He says he'll fly his plane to Sacramento to see her. Jane finds all of this amusing. He agrees with Mashburn's assessment of Lisbon's appeal and compliments him on his style. And later he tells Lisbon that she should have taken him up on his offer, that a little empty glamour would be good for her.
When you realize that Mashburn is a stand-in for Jane, the whole thing is quite funny, really. Lisbon being attracted to Jane. Jane telling Lisbon that he'd be good for her, loosen her up a little.
When they meet again in Red Hot, Lisbon does take Mashburn up on his offer. She enjoys herself, and then like the skittish filly she is, she never sees him again. It's too much. Too tempting, too out of character for the person she wants to be. And Mashburn could overpower her emotionally. She doesn't want that.
The trauma, their mutual trauma, is what Jane and Lisbon share and bond over. It's what keeps them apart, and what eventually, after that slow, slow burn, brings them together. The attraction was always there. It's takes time to build that complete understanding and utter trust, and it never would have happened if Jane had been available to begin with.

You'd been at each other's side for nearly seventeen years, first meeting when you arrived in the Boston QZ almost eight years after outbreak day. To say you were a hardened survivor was putting it lightly; you had endured every unimaginable loss possible. Tragedy became a constant companion of yours as you lost beloved friends and family, and you grew to know nothing but anger and violence.
At first, you thought nothing of him. He was just your neighbor across the hall, coming and going at all different points throughout the day and night. Another face in the sea of struggling people. Your paths occasionally crossed during the same shift of the same shitty jobs FEDRA assigned for a cruel amount of ration cards. You'd exchange brief nods every so often, and on the rare occasion, a mutter that was only decipherable as a greeting.
On a chance encounter beyond the walls of the QZ, you ran into him with another woman during one of your smuggling runs. You had frozen, with no indication of the kind of people they were, they could've either kept it to themselves or reported you, essentially sentencing you to death. Thankfully, a higher power had been on your side that day as the woman had concluded you weren't a threat to them, simply giving you a nod before they carried on. It was a subtle understanding that passed around you three. You worry about your business, and I'll worry about mine.
Things shifted after that.
The more you would see them, either together or separately, the more of a connection began to form. It started off small– bowing your heads at one another in passing, giving the faintest of smiles. Notes would be slipped under your door from time to time with a tip regarding stashed goods or potential dangers within the QZ and outside of it. It would be signed off by 'Tess' or 'Joel', with Tess being the more frequent sender. In return, you'd do the same, leaving helpful tips and sometimes doubling what they had left for you.
It graduated to in-person visits, primarily initiated by Tess. Joel kept his distance for the most part, despite literally living across the hall. That didn't mean that his lingering gaze went unnoticed by you, though.
Over the next twelve years, you banded together as a trio. Trust was one of the rarest commodities to come across, and you had found it in one another. Over time, your walls had come down, and you shared parts of yourself that had been long buried for years. You’d engaged in casual conversations, tactical strategies, and even light-hearted banter at times.
Smuggling operations became a team effort, though often it left you to work with Joel alone. Tess would go off on her own for recon, utilizing her expertise and connections to gather vital information, also because she was way more likely to be reciprocated in her efforts compared to Joel. Nonetheless, you formed a formidable duo, working seamlessly together to navigate the dangers when they presented themselves.
There became an unspoken understanding between you and Joel that communicated in volumes. You developed a rhythm, anticipating each other's moves and providing support when it was needed the most. A dynamic that had set your relationship apart from Tess.
Through the long nights, you both shared snippets of your lives before the outbreak. He spoke of growing up in Texas, the memories of a time when life was normal and filled with simple pleasures, like playing guitar. He mentioned a distant brother, Tommy, who was somewhere out west. He'd worked as a contractor, though dreamed of building something of his own. He spoke with a hint of regret, remembering the long hours he worked while still struggling to make ends meet. Reluctantly, he'd even shared the fact that he had a daughter, though he hardly said her name or other details. The most you learned was that he had a daughter, and then he didn't.
You enlightened him about how you lived a calm life. You grew up in the mountains, which explained your affinity for nature, and you found solace in music. You had both your parents and a brother, who was your closest ally. If one of you were doing something, the other tagged along with no questions asked. It was a month in to your last year of high school when outbreak day came along, forever fucking up your life. You recounted the graphic and harrowing moments of loss, the pain of watching your loved ones fall one by one in the span of two years. The next four years were spent traveling alone in search of a place to close your eyes without fearing that something was coming for you, whether it was alive or dead. Through whispers on the road, you heard of the Boston QZ, one of the remaining zones that retained enough stability. You didn't believe it, deeming it as something that was too good to be true after the world had been so cruel to you, but what else did you have to lose?
You still carried on your work the same, but it was clear that your relationship had shifted once again, this time more personally. He looked at you differently, like he was truly seeing you in a way no one else ever had. It showed in the way his voice was softer when he spoke to you and became overall more attentive towards you. He'd stop by your place more often, either sticking around for a few minutes or several hours. But it was in moments of vulnerability that spoke to the depth of your relationship. When you suffered serious injuries that left you barely conscious, he was there without hesitation. With gentle hands and meticulous care, he'd clean and patch you up, letting you rest your weary body against his for however long you needed.
You couldn't deny the growing affection in your heart for him by the frequent moments in which you felt a closeness that went beyond friendship. There was an unspoken intimacy, a silent understanding of the uncharted territory your hearts were treading, saying stay with me, and, why wouldn't i?
Insert Ellie into your lives. A young, electrifying girl from the Fireflies, a group you'd come to loathe.
You three had been on your way to find Robert, the dickbag that sold your guns, when you got caught in a scuffle between FEDRA and the Fireflies, being forced to flee and take an alternate route, leading you right to Marlene, Queen Firefly, as you liked to call her. Upon discovering she had your guns, she proposed an exchange: Smuggle a girl out of the QZ for the guns. You and Joel scoffed at the idea, immediately wanting to call it off, but somehow, someway, Tess convinced you both to go forward with it.
She was everything you expected her to be at first; unaware and a liability. She eyed you three cautiously, not really okay with the idea of leaving Marlene, but not having another option to go with either. In pushing towards the capitol, you reminded her of what felt like every five minutes to stay down, stay quiet, and do exactly as told as Tess led and Joel trailed behind.
After several attacks and encounters with infected, the true reason was revealed as to why Marlene needed the fourteen-year-old smuggled out: She was immune to infection. Even after the girl's explanations of finding a cure in a lab out west, you shook with laughter in disbelief. How many times had you heard this shit before? Tess, seemingly the only one to believe her, executively decided to push forward, earning disconcerted looks from you and Joel.
You couldn't have said you were surprised when you turned up to the empty capitol, the Fireflies once again proving how they were fucking unreliable as always. Your smugness quickly turned to mild panic as Tess began to have a meltdown, ultimately confessing her bite that made time stop ticking for you. Fuck.
It had been sixteen years since you last lost someone you cared about in the same way, your ability to react and process was nonexistent, so you just stood and stared as if it would disappear. With FEDRA looming beyond the doors, Tess had urged you both to take Ellie and find Tommy, find a way to get her to that damned lab.
So that's what you did.
The first few months were rough on all three of you. You faced infected, as expected, but it was harder to deal with each other more than anything. Ellie tried to find where she stood with you and Joel, wanting to help at every turn but keeping her head down to stay out of the way. You respected how she held her own and didn't take shit from Bill when stopping through his town, and how she handled losing people as quickly as she met them, like Sam and Henry. Despite her efforts, you often found Joel not letting up, only praising her once in a blue moon.
You realized it wasn't so bad after all, being with Ellie. She had spirit and faith, traits you hadn't seen someone possess in quite some time. In her presence, you found yourself rediscovering the capacity for joy and laughter, something that had felt distant and unattainable for far too long. You watched as she got to see and experience things in her life for the first time, like walking through forests; things that you had taken for granted. Her needs, before a burden, had now become a responsibility you willingly tended to, making sure she was the first to eat, drink, and sleep at all times. Each night, you watched her drift off, knowing she was protected by you and Joel and catching a feeling of a profound sense of purpose.
Stumbling into Tommy and his crew wasn't the reunion that you hoped for when fall rolled around. Ellie and Joel's relationship had taken a turn when she caught wind of him wanting to leave her with Tommy, figuring that he could do a better job, though you disagreed. Consequently, it led to her and Joel getting into an argument while you and Tommy awkwardly lingered outside of an abandoned ranch house. And though you were outside, you could still hear bits and pieces, finally hearing the name of Joel's daughter and understanding the pain that shaped his actions towards Ellie.
Upon coming to Eastern Colorado University weeks later, the Fireflies once again proved to be unreliable in staying in a fucking singular location. While you found scattered recordings that indicated them to be in Utah, you also found yourselves caught between hunters and infected, leading to yet another one of the traumatizing moments in your life: Joel falling off a second story and being impaled in the abdomen by a jagged piece of rebar. You and Ellie had managed to defend yourselves while also protecting Joel, talking to him through gritted teeth and coaxing him to move, repeating the words like a mantra.
The winter had been particularly cruel that year, leaving you short on food. You and Ellie had eventually found shelter in an abandoned lake house, securing Joel and carefully tending to him for the following weeks. Deep down, you knew Joel's body couldn’t continue fighting sepsis without proper medicine, and the thought of him dying brought you to near tears. While out hunting alone, you had run into two men. They’d traded you medicine for the deer, but not without leaving you with the eerie fact that they knew you, and knew you killed their men back at the university. You had fled back to Joel and Ellie as quickly as possible, sticking the syringe in him with shaky hands as you urgently warned her to be ready to face danger once again.
Your gut instinct had been right as the next morning you had heard the sound of people nearby, scrambling to tell Ellie to stay with Joel while you led them away and strictly emphasizing that she was not to leave. As you lured off and killed a few hunters, they unfortunately bested you, knocking you out cold and dragging you back to their settlement. You had woken up in a makeshift cage, with your weapons gone and zipties bounding your hands and feet together, as David watched you from afar, speaking to you in a tone that drastically contrasted the words he spoke. You fought through the grogginess, your mind was only set on one thing: Finding Ellie and Joel, alive. Discreetly, you had broken out of the restrictions and kicked out the gate, grabbing the broken chain and slinging it at him as you escaped.
You hid in abandoned storefronts and evaded your enemies, silently taking down the ones that drew too close with makeshift weapons and leaving a trail of bodies in your wake. The harsh snowfall made it all the more challenging, obscuring your vision and forcing you to rely on your sense of sound. When you went to strike at another body, you were caught off-guard as strong hands seized your wrists and pinned you against the wall. At the realization that it was Joel pressed against you, tears brimmed in your eyes as you threw your arms around him, thanking whatever higher power there was for bringing him back to you.
Together, you had found Ellie in a burning restaurant, rushing in to see her hacking away at David. Joel ripped her away from him, her cries and pleads tearing you apart. You fell to your knees as she wept out, taking her into your arms as Joel held the both of you, smoothing her hair and whispering soothing reassurances. It was in that moment that you realized that you and Joel had become more than just a guardian for this young girl. There was an understanding that you both would do whatever it took to keep her safe.
A feeling of disappointment had set in when Ellie declined Joel's offer to go back to Jackson after arriving in Salt Lake City. After what she had gone through, you saw that she felt an obligation to finish what brought you all together in the first place. While navigating through flooded streets, you were faced with rescuing and resuscitating both Joel and Ellie as they became trapped underwater and falling unconscious, the moments blurring together all too fast before you'd been knocked out by two Fireflies from behind.
You had woken up to Joel in a hospital bed next to you, along with Marlene. The Fireflies had set up base at the St. Mary's Hospital, not too far from where you were clocked. Through Marlene you learned that Ellie had been okay, but was immediately taken in for surgery. When you had asked how the procedure would play out, Marlene hesitantly explained that Ellie's brain was at the center of it all, and you had put the pieces together that it all pointed towards death. Both you and Joel grew angry and had protested that another way had to be possible, but of course, Marlene disregarded and ordered for your leave.
What followed in that hospital became yet another turning point in your relationship, not only with Joel, but Ellie too. You were both aware that once you killed the first person in your way, that there was no going back.
And nothing made more sense.
Not a living soul made it out of that hospital except for you, Joel, and Ellie. The chance couldn't be taken that you'd be tracked or followed. So, you returned to Jackson in one piece, and held a secret that only strengthened your bond to each other.
You had moved into the last house on Rancher Street, a decent sized home with a separate garage and fenced in yard. Joel took up the bigger bedroom upon your insistence, and the garage converted to a space designed just for Ellie. You found work in patrol, with Joel and Tommy, and administration by Maria’s side.
It undoubtedly marked a new chapter; no more traveling, no more searching, no more sleeping with one eye open. You had food, clothes, and a roof over your head, in a thriving community, moreover.
Everything had fallen into place, just like it was supposed to.
And you, Joel, and Ellie were finally safe.
Right?

Alright, so, I wanna ramble about my Ninjago Infinity Train AU I wanna write because ubfeuhrbfenw
First things first, I'm prolly gonna write it no matter what because I'm silly like that, the poll was more so to decide if I should post it.
Second, what is Infinity Train? Well I'm here to teach you uncultured folks. Infinity Train is an animated show that centered around people boarding a train with infinite cars and being given glowing numbers on their hands, making friends with denizens, creatures who live on the train, as they go from car to car to find a way home.
I have to go into spoiler territory after this, but if you haven't watched Infinity Train, I highly recommend you do so first because it's so good and so underrated. You can watch it here!
you better have watched infinity train
It's revealed that the numbers on their hand actually represent a trauma or something in their life (divorced parents, bullying, neglect, abandonment, broken friendships, etc) they must learn to overcome to lower their number to 0 and eventually get off the train, however, if they make the situation worse, their number can go up instead.
So, essentially the Infinity Train is just a train that lowkey kidnaps people to give them therapy, top tier business.
This AU would essentially just be the Ninjago characters in a modern, normal world with no elemental powers, ninja, or anything like that, so they all live in different places and don't know who each other are.
That's until they all end up boarding the train.
Cole boards first. His rocky relationship with his father has finally pushed him to his breaking point, after his mother's death, that he never really got over, his relationship with Lou only got worse and worse until one night Cole finally decides that he's leaving, running away and boarding a train to get him as far away as he can, only for it to be the Infinity Train
Next is Jay. Jay has been struggling with bullying for years at this point, completely isolated from the other kids his age as he's looked down on for his poor life and excitable personality. Luckily, he's always had his parents who have been nothing but loving and caring to him, acting as the main source of stability in his life. That all crashes down when his class has a heritage assignment where Jay finds out he's adopted. Wanting nothing more than to hide away, the train comes to pick him up.
Zane is picked up third. I find his intro the hardest to explain, but I'll still try. Zane is mostly struggling with why he's so different and why he doesn't understand why people do things the way they do. On his mission to understand others, he accidentally gets himself in trouble again and again with the people around him. All this eventually accumulates to his single father losing his job. Feeling guilty, Zane doesn't want to be a burden on his dad any more and attempts to leave to try to live on his own, causing him to board the train.
Kai and Nya board the train at the same time. Like in the show, Kai and Nya are left to raise themselves since a young age, causing them to grow up in an incredibly stressful situation. One night they get into an argument about how each of them thinks the other is sacrificing too much. Kai is frustrated and stressed that Nya is pushing herself so hard to be perfect and wants to drop out so he'll be spending less money and Nya is frustrated and stressed that Kai has already dropped out and completely thrown away his life for her. This eventually accumulates to Nya storming out, only for her to be forcefully picked up by the train, Kai getting taken as well when he tries to save her. They wake up on the train separated.
Finally, Lloyd boards the train. For as long as he can remember, it's just been him and his mom against the world. She tries to earn enough money to take care of her son while Lloyd is often mistreated by everyone due to crimes his, now missing, father committed. It causes everyone to see him as a danger and Lloyd to feel like a burden on his mom. One night, when walking home, Lloyd is ambushed and beaten up by a group of teens, only for the train to suddenly pull up, scaring them away. Lloyd, however, is drawn to it, which causes him to board the train. While on it, he quickly learns that something and that he's different due to huis number being broken, glitching and giving him secret messages.
From there, we follow the characters' journeys on the train as they meet characters from throughout ninjago, some are fellow passengers, others are denizens, friends and foes are made, battles are fought, the six characters all working towards getting home as they eventually become their found family of six.
SO YA- IDK- I HOPE THAT EXPLAINS IT AND POSSIBLY MAKES SOME OF YOU INTERESTED IN READING IT, OR AT LEAST GOT YOU INTERESTED IN WATCHING INFINITY TRAIN CUZ ITS SO GOOD YALL AND IM SO PISSED ABOUT IT BEING CANCELLED ISTG

A World For Her Alone | The First Lives Pt. 4
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5
cw (chapter specific): murder, death, reader has terrible self esteem and really needs a hug
pairing: claude x fem!reader
summary: Now we're diving head first into our second chance.
Author's note: Yeah I realized the way I've been numbering and naming these parts has been really stupid but I'm in too deep so I'm gonna call them chapters now.
Tumblr media
This time, you were determined to do things right.
Despite your reputation, you were never a confrontational person. You spoke few words and you had been raised essentially to be rather meek. You were used to relying on others just like any other noble girl had been raised. You had servants who would sense your every need, escorts to stand by your side and protect you. In the worst of cases, you should rely on your husband or your father.
However…the last thing Claude wanted was a weak, reliant wife. Despite his love for the fragile and temporal beauty Diana, he would never allow you not to carry your own weight. He always had soft words to offer in times of struggle but in all reality, if you really needed his help he would have been displeased. That was why your first order of business was to become stronger.
Hadn’t everything happened in your past life because you were too weak? You had nothing and you lost your life because of it. Now you had another chance and you had to use it well. You had to fortify yourself, even if it were only a façade to scare away danger, that was still something substantial. In  your past life you had looked soft on the outside and that was enough to decide you were perfect to take advantage of. If you didn’t appear soft now, you wouldn’t be targeted again.
You thought back on your life in jail, all of it condensed into blurred hopeful and anxious days in the beginning and so painfully slow in the end. Aware of every second that passed by with your dwindling hopes. The sight of that woman you used to be was more pathetic than anything. A wretched existence from beginning to end. That was why you were determined to take every measure possible. Even if there was gossip about you being a brutal and underhanded woman. Even if it made you a pariah.
You increased your connections, to the point where you were the most influential person of your peerage. In your first life, you had never thought to use others, you were a simple minded girl. In this life, you didn’t waste a moment. The art of manipulation and congeniality is what you had lacked previously so focused on being a perfect wife. Now you studied people like they were animals in the wild. And you could finally understand who would or tried to betray you.
While others condemned you for your cunning and ruthlessness, strangely, Claude allowed it. He probably understood now that you were driven by the purpose of any noble rather than the bitter and unsightly jealousy that had repelled him before. He understood and perhaps, appreciated your diligence.
“I can leave the manor to you without worry,” He smiled “I’m lucky to have taken you as my wife.” Even with just that amount of approval, you could bear anything.
For the sake of protecting Diana and by proxy, your own innocence, you couldn’t lack in anything. You had to become a medusa figure, someone whose power is truly to be feared. Nevermind that it wasn’t what you had ever desired for yourself. Nevermind too, that it would make you someone quite distinct from the person Diana, who Claude loved, was.
When that fateful day arrived, the one which had previously overturned your entire life, the bandits had been apprehended already. You were the one who had lent extra protection to Diana and had them caught. It was truly uncanny for them to be caught, with how discreetly they plotted. You could see it in their faces that were obviously expressing how many questions were running through their minds. You could see from their reactions that attacking Diana’s carriage was really only opportunistic. Diana hadn’t been targeted specifically but of course, the people who opposed you in your previous life had made good use of the situation too.
Even with the attack thwarted there was more to be done. An escort for Diana to stealthily lie in wait for danger and a request for her not to go out was a start but really…
Just to be very sure one day, you asked Claude to go to her. There was no one else who had such ability and care to protect her. You didn’t want to let him go to her. You didn’t want them to meet at all, let alone without you present. But Claude agreed without hesitation before you could even uselessly regret asking. At the sight of his genuine smile, your hands began to tremble. Your breathing was shallow. You didn’t exactly know why but you knew you should hide it from Claude’s eye.
What could you say? What excuse would be appropriate to wave it away?
But you needn’t have worried about it. When you looked back up at him, Claude’s eyes were looking right through you. He was far away, already with Diana. It was fine, even so. As long as he can protect her, just once, you should tolerate it. So your little sister could be safe.
And that day truly did pass uneventfully. At last, you had made it through. Diana was safe and the day had ended mundanely. In the evening, the floodgates burst and you broke down. Your life had been freed from the fate of overlapping with your previous one. The tragedy had been avoided.
You sobbed without restraint, releasing tears of relief and perhaps even thanks. You pretended not to notice that even though it was the middle of the night, your husband had not returned home. Even though he had assured you that he would be home before dark.
The part of your life you had lost was now renewed.
You believed you were out of the woods. Now, having overcome obstacles, real life could begin. Life for you would now be golden. The angels smiled on you, forgiven your sin of inaction and would now bless you with a warm and ordinary life.
Now that everything bad was behind you, you could focus on your most central role as a marchioness. You could finally have a child. Claude would surely be a good father and you, a good mother. Yes, you would devote yourself to raising your child. You would finally be united with Claude as a family and your relationship would take new form.

I have a couple of questions about this au : 1. Since Cody has been got that living poison or that good for nothing uncle of his out of his life so he doesnt have to face the "dangers" of this world he has created or keeping him inside the penthouse , how would this affect Cody's perspective ?
2. Did the EPF completely removed the dark turtles' failsafe devices (hypnotic induced precautions) they have implanted within them (possibly near the cerebrum or cerebellum) , or did they also found the other things like explosives within them since they are living weapons after all 3. After the trial , where would Darius be sentenced to , somewhere like maximum prison for terrorists or luxury prison for privileged people . Or his business partners that President Bishop had mentioned at the prologue during the interrogation ?
OOOH FUN QUESTIONS
1. This one's pretty complex! Cody is a victim of abuse, but it was the kind of abuse that fostered co-dependency, and that's really hard to deprogram from. Cody may now understand that his Uncle was a bad person who never actually had his best interests in mind, but the behaviors he was taught are still going to take time to unravel. He compulsively feels the need to placate the people around him, because Dunn raised him to be obedient and expected him to essentially put his entire life on hold just for his uncle's convenience. He was raised to believe that what he could do (or build) for others determined his worth, given that was how Dunn determined his worth. He also becomes deeply invested in his attachments, having been allowed so few close relationships outside of home and work. Feeling lonely is scary, so he feels like he has to please the people he's close to especially so they won't want to leave. This leads to him denying his own needs in favor of those around him, even outright refusing to acknowledge when he's not doing well until it gets overwhelming. Thankfully, the Splintersons have left him with some very good influence, and I think as he goes he'll find the things they taught him to be of invaluable help. I don't want to say too much on that, though, since it's the subject of a few chapters off in the future heheh.
2. The EPF has long-since been dissolved, it doesn't exist anymore! And according to records, the leader died mysteriously in such a way that no body could be recovered, and there aren't any records of his name anywhere. Weird! In any case, yes, the authorities are aware of the Dark Turtles' implants. Again, this comes up later on, so I'm not gonna say too much. But! I can also point out that all their weapons and armor were confiscated. I believe it's mentioned once or twice in the first few chapters, but I try to keep it in mind since it means alterations on their usual designs whenever I draw them.
3. There's an episode of Fast Forward that begins with Jammerhead being broken out of prison, and it shows us an island in the middle of the river is where the facility is located (GREAT design choice NNYC city planners. I'm sure the nearby residents love that.) This is where I've been picturing Dunn is being held, he even gets the same prison uniform in the newspaper drawing! From the glimpse we see in the episode, it looks pretty miserable, and I think Bishop is vindictive enough to ensure he doesn't even have a chance of getting moved anywhere nicer. Because of course, in Bishop's utopia future, the prison system is still horrible. The business partners are a plot thread that is going to stay dormant for now, but it's very fortuitous of you to keep them in mind heheh.
Thank you for the questions, I hope this answers to your satisfaction!

{winston duke, 37, cisman, he/him} We are so glad to see you safe, KING BAKKALCHA SOLOMAN of ETHIOPIA! It’s dangerous out in the world these days, but I hear that you are THOUGHTFUL and PROTECTIVE enough to handle it. Just don’t let your BITTERNESS bring you down! Stay on your guard, because with your secret being at risk for exposure, you wouldn’t want everyone to find out YOU ARE WAVERING ON THE LINE BETWEEN LIGHT & DARK MOTIVES.
Tumblr media
BASICS;
nicknames:  chala.
sexuality:  heterosexual.
relationship: married to the queen of ethiopia for nearly two decades now.
date of birth:  july 10th.
zodiac sign:  cancer.
moral alignment: neutral good but becoming more lawful neutral...
hobbies: spending time with family, with animals, communing with nature, playing card games/games of chance.
dislikes: betrayal, people talking about him, animal cruelty, being interrupted, selfish natures.
languages spoken: tba!
politics/loyalty: loyal only to his home, his family. is growing suspicious and angry with other nations, and distrusting. is beginning to believe that the others are against them, is slow to offer alliances.
inspirations: the maverick, the leader, the vengeful, the crestfallen, the protector.
Tumblr media
DETAILS;
known for once being generous, kind-hearted, and extremely compassionate (especially to animals), chala has becoming different in the last few weeks as he changes quickly following the loss of his mother. he is growing distrusting, moreso than he ever has in his 10 years of reign.
he is extremely careful with his kingdom - and will rarely accept outside help, funneling about 99% of everything directly back into his own realm, and has little trade business outside of ethiopia.
even so, he has aided other countries in the past, with funds or food, but never military.
he has left behind his pet cat, a blackmane lion that he rescued as a cub during a hunting trip, with a bad paw causing him to limp and go very slowly. he's a bit fat, so he wouldn't have made the journey... and the sharma staff said no, so, whatever.
he and his wife do have children!
CONNECTIONS;
to be filled out as i plot!
his wife, the queen of ethiopia: his dearest, true love queen malaika
BACKSTORY;
eldest of four, chala took his role as the big brother very seriously, and was primed to be king from an early age. everything in life was planned and laid out for him - his bride selected, fortunate to have been already a close friend, chala was ready long before he got to take the throne. he trained in war, but he also trained in gentleness.
he regularly would stay in humble accommodations, traveling his country, and visiting every corner to get to know, understand, and affect the lives of his people. there was little chala would do that was not a direct act of service to his country, to his family, to his parents most of all.
maintaining this ideal world did not come easily. they were forced to maintain a harsh, brutal militia to defend their rich lands, and marriages were usually established early, and young, though chala hopes to be a little lenient on this now. his father, the reigning king, died 10 years ago in a battle that nearly took their home from them, but was ultimately won.
it was around this time that chala and his wife began to have their children, to watch their family grow... and he was even more prone to withdraw into his security, to close more doors, and tighten more roads to the essentials. they didn't need anyone else.
when chala took the throne, he promised to protect everyone... and he did, until now, when he was unable to protect his mother. he craves vengeance. it was not yet her time, and he is blinded by the grief.

hi, guess who? your secret santa came back to thank you for putting so much effort and love into answering the previous ask
can neither deny nor confirm if i had been involved into creating the playlist but i'm certainly no stranger to some of the songs
i was looking more for the headcanons that are simple and somewhat childish but still essential for understanding the character as in his preferences (color, music) or type of a person (zodiac sign, mbti and similar), any kind of associations are also fine
you gave me enough of them but if there's still something to unleash i'm all ears
also i'd want you to go back to the question about the scenes you consider show riven's personality best and pick a quote or two or three you like the most
can be from other scenes too but the ones you've already named rely so much on the conversation part that it feels right to pick some lines from those ones
Welcome back, dear Santa! It's been my pleasure, hope you enjoy the playlist!
I've been wondering how to answer this next ask in line with the previous ones — film myself re-enacting the quotes, perhaps? But alas, I'm not a good actor, and I disagree with people who say I have a nice voice, so I won't be recording an audio performance either🙊 I'm actually having a really busy week, and I don't want to make you wait any longer, so I'll just answer this one the regular way and hope you're not too bitterly disappointed:
S1E3: the sparring scene and the ensuing conversation where he tries to actually be a friend to Sky always struck me as quite genuine for S1 Riven
"What, Riven gets a compliment and all of a sudden Silva has brain damage?"
S1E4: the argument with Sky where we learned a lot about his underlying motivations
"She's the only person in this damn school who likes me as is."
S2E1: the scene where he expresses doubts about Silva’s punishment and keeps his mouth shut when he sees the escape attempt happening
"Do you really have no doubts? How the hell do you have no doubts?"
S2E5: whether you choose to see it as shippy or not, the conversation he has with Musa on the running tracks is genuinely caring and honest
"Your life is your life. You can live it how you want. Fսck everybody else."
I will say though, although I would consider these the quotes I like most from those scenes, I wouldn't say they're my favorite Riven quotes in general, so here's a few contenders for that as well:
"Fun fact: if everyone around you is a nightmare, it’s not them." (S01E03)
"Oh I'm sorry, I'll be more delicate next time I'm saving your ass from fucking monsters." (S02E05)
"Specialists aren't just randoms who are picked up off the street. We're selected. We train for years. And you think you can just come here and in a couple of days figure it out? It's insulting. You could get hurt, Musa. Or worse, killed. And it's dangerous to everyone else. So go ahead, play dress up. It's not like there's more important things going on." (S02E06)
As always, I'll be here if there's more you want to know, dear Santa! And I hope you're having fun working on your HEX because that's the most important thing💕

I don't usually post things of this caliber on this site, but this has to be said.
If you are not paying attention to what is happening in the USA right now, if you're a citizen, you need to wake up. Now. You needed to wake up in 2016, when we knew this would happen in the not-so-distant future.
As we all know by now, Roe v. Wade was overturned by SCOTUS. Specifically by 6 justices who have no business deciding laws whatsoever for they hold extremists and dangerous views. But as many of us know and understand, Roe v. Wade was only the beginning of their plan for a white conservative Christofascist nation.
So what are they targeting next?
They are targeting Moore v. Harper, which is what allows a state's judicial system the keep federal voting fair. If this is overturned, that grants the state's the power to draw any electoral map they want, and the power to overrule votes if they do not like the outcome. Essentially, that means they can put into power anyone they wish, and that includes who they give the electoral votes to for the Presidency.
They are targeting Brown v. The Board of Education, which ruled that racial segregation was unconstitutional. If overruled, segregation in schools will once again be legal.
They are targeting Lawrence v. Texas, which ruled that same sex persons have a right to have sexual intimacy with another in the privacy of their own homes.
They are targeting Obergefell v. Hodges, which made same sex marriage legal.
They are targeting interracial marriage.
They are targeting the Indigenous Child Welfare Act, which rules that indigenous children cannot be removed from their families. Overturning this means that these children will be forced into white foster homes.
They are targeting the right to contraceptives.
They have already ruled that police forces do not have to read you your Miranda rights when you are arrested, and you cannot sue them if they do not. They have already ruled that any home within 100 miles of the border does not have to have a warrant granted to be invaded. They have already ruled that gun laws are not up to the states. They have already ruled that you have your taxes have to go to private, religious schools. They have already ruled that students can be forced into a christian prayer in schools.
And I'm sure that this isn't even close to everything that is being targeted.
They are attacking and endangering women, anyone with a uterus,' black folks, indigenous folks, brown folks, transgender folks, other LGBTQ+ folks, non-Christian folk, and anyone else who is not their ideal cisgender hetero Christian conservative white man.
If you're not outraged, you should be. If you're not paying attention, you need to be. And if you are doing nothing, you should be ashamed. When I say nothing, I don't mean in the "I am mentally burnt out and am trying to survive" way, I specifically mean in the "I do not care and they are not targeting me" way.
Because not only is that a shitty excuse for ignorance, they will, eventually, come for you, too. We are watching the fall of our democracy, after having a broken system for far too long. This system was never fully working, and was flawed from the beginning with who it helped and protected.
And before I hear any "the founding fathers were christian and this was founded as a Christian nation", the FF themselves had explicitly stated the importance of a separation between the church and the state. Most of them were also Deists, not Christians. No religion belongs in the law or the government.
And before I also hear "if you hate it do much here just move" from so called "patriots", that is the MOST unpatriotic thing you could say or believe. True patriotism is believing your country can be better, and fighting and advocating for that. And I will be damned if I don't do that for all people living here.
A persons humanity is not a debate. My existence as a transgender queer pagan, is not a debate on if I deserve rights and deserve to live. Black people's existence is not a debate. Brown people's existence is not a debate. Indigenous people's existence is not a debate. Women's existence is not a debate. Transgender,' Nonbinary and LGBTQ+ existences are not debates. Other religious folk besides Christian's are not a debate. Non cis, non white, not hetero, non Christian, non men, are not lesser than those who are.
And to all my other white people; we, collectively, need to STOP talking over others voices. We need to stop drowning out the voices of black, brown, and indigenous folks. If anything, we need to use our privilege to amplify their voices. And let me say, your queerness or religious status, does not overwrite the fact you are white. Before anyone knows who I am or what I believe, they will see first and foremost I am a white person. That is privilege. Your queerness doesn't excuse you from being shitty to other people.
Please, WAKE. UP. Freedom and Justice for no one until it is for everyone.

Things I think when I think about the anchor
I am here for what is called a social department training. There are some people who look decent. But I still heard the sound of a rat trap. I will probably never understand what the fun is in writing a news story and criticizing someone. And without any humor at all. Maybe that's the point, I think now. . I was in a good mood and asked her a lot of questions, but I still felt a whiff of something that was essentially different from me, and I was not sure what I was supposed to be excited about. I may have been looking for someone who is exciting to talk to, and I may have been far from perfect from their point of view, but I wonder if that is partly due to our compatibility. Everyone is under the company's rules and curses, and is always trying to find a way to get along in the company, and is always happy or sad at the company's evaluation, no matter where they go or what kind of organization they belong to. And so it is in the family unit. Originally, I wanted to be a company employee in order to acquire a semblance of common sense rather than my eccentric father, but I was still a child of a frog, and my roots were not the right one for being a company worker. There were people who would tell me that you would follow a career path that would surprise you and that you would be happy with, making a truly innocent face, but I couldn't quite figure out what would be left in the end. I also think that the idea of just leaving it behind in your life might be ridiculous to begin with. It is a big story. The peasants who worked in the manors had no idea of leaving anything behind, and I think it is very difficult to break the curse of modernity then. In Japanese, freedom is consists with two Chinese characters which means depending on your self, and Japanese word "我がまま" means selfish with also two Chinese characters that means being yourself. In other words, being a company employee means living for a few decades, advocating one's own wishes and realizing them in balance with the company's logic.
And in terms of significance or meaning, which are the keys to work I think, it is also very tricky. I felt the significance, or rather the richness of life, in the background music of Bob Marley that made the women working in the coffee shop dance, rather than in the subway built by JICA in Vietnam. The Special Investigation Department, the courts, the police, the ministries, politics, the IRS, and dangerous bus stops are no match for bokumode kimimode! I was thinking about how they are living each day with a dried-up sensitivity. I think I may be one of them soon!
And I had quite a few opportunities to talk with my father over the past few days, and when I heard that he used to draw only on the edges of a blank sheet of construction paper when he was a child, I thought, "I see".
He was not in agreement with his acquaintance who wanted to study the current reclamation of Tokyo Bay and its impact on the environment, but he was rather interested in the idea that bombing the small mountain in Chiba with an atomic bomb and creating tons of sands to fill up the ocean. Or the Aoba Street in Sendai is actually curved like a beak right in front of the station, and that is why some politicians wanted it to be straight. He spent all hours of the day researching the history of the city plan, which split the Diet in two, using his computer and reading newspaper articles from the past. He has been saying that he can't read fiction or literatures for some time now, but what he is looking for is a collection of real-life pictorial images, and since there is no attempt to read the human mind involved, my mother and sister complain about him. That's how it happened.
I have recently come to strongly believe that my father's fondness for newspapers may have influenced me, either unconsciously or consciously, to enter this business: newspaper. I feel I have not yet achieved true independence in a way.
Living on your own is difficult and impossible, but I believe that becoming mentally independent from the things that have protected you is one of the most important things you need to do in your 20's. It is a personal, but certainly critical, issue that will affect your self-esteem and self-confidence, and can change the way you perceive the rest of your life. Someone sang looking at the high sky, "I am both protected and bound".
Late at night in a hotel in Tokyo, I lie naked with no change of clothes, my shirt washed on the washbasin with shampoo by my side. 5%. My cell phone is nearly out of charge. The air purifier is rattling, trying to filter and clean the city air, but the air coming out smells a bit stale. Will tomorrow be a good day? I don't mind walking down the wide business street at a brisk pace, wearing my favorite leather shoes. I just don't like building streets, and I don't think I'm going to be very interested in the same kind of buildings. So it goes. Everyone decorates their nails, wears what they like, some learn about history, some work to get the big news. More or less.
I wonder if getting in and out of the company would be better, or if that hurdle were a little lower. It may still take me a little while to get to sleep today, as there were many times when I talked with them, but at the end of the day I was still confronted with the fact that we don't fully understand each other.

Tumblr media
I guess it's time.
I've done my fair share of social media doom scrolling and void screaming over the years. Oddly enough, social media can also be a source of inspiration. Especially if you can pull back and look at big picture trends within your individual feed (not the big platform-wide trending topics.)
Lately I've been seeing all the usual tensions between Easter and those of us raised in evangelical fundamentalism who get a little twitchy this time of year. Plus there is a presidential election this Fall here in the U.S. The very real dangers of Christion Nationalistism are (finally!) being recognized. I've added what I can on the side of church-state separation. One person called me a "bafflingly atheist Tarot reader." Well, I am an atheist and I am  a Tarot reader. I've been planning to write a post like this to un-baffle things a little bit.
Unsurprisingly, I follow a lot of Tarot readers on Threads and Instagram. We are in the business of provoking thoughts so when @pixiecurio (creator of the brilliant Light Seer's Tarot deck! www.chris-anne.myshopify.com) outright asked for our thoughts about religion and spirituality, I knew it was time for this particular behind the scenes peek.
The root problem, as I see it, is when we use religion and spirituality interchangeably or think of them as being essentially the same thing.
They are not.
No matter how thin a coin may be, it still has two distinct and opposite sides. Both religion and spirituality deal with the intangible mysteries of human life. In that sense, they are part of the same coin, but they approach life's mysteries in distinct and vastly different ways.
Spirituality is internal and moves from the inside out. Spirituality is our individual, direct experience of life's mysteries and can be expressed but not taught. A spiritual teacher can lead you to the doorway, but only you can cross the threshold into direct experience and direct understanding. This internal experience directs external behaviors.
Religion is external and moves from the outside in. Religion is a group consensus about life's intangible mysteries and is taught from one generation to another. The external behavior strives to direct the internal experience.
Rather than two sides of the same coin, I find it more helpful to think of religion and spirituality as two circles of a Venn diagram.
For some people, their group, cultural, external religion is also an expression of their sincere, individual, internal spirituality. In that case, their circles overlap a great deal. For others, like me, the circles don't touch at all.
Tarot falls 100% within the circle of spirituality and not at all within the circle of religion. Tarot doesn't touch religion unless there is already some degree of overlap in your individual, personal religion-spirituality Venn diagram.
The original Tarot images emerged in sixteenth century Europe where religious and cultural diversity was less common. The original Tarot decks are rife with Christian images and symbols because at that time, Catholicism was culturally and politically dominant. Their circles had a lot of overlap.
Here, now, the circles need not touch and are still perfectly valid. In 21st century America an atheist Tarot reader is both possible and understandable.
Centuries of use and practice have shown that Tarot is a tool for our spirituality - it is a mechanism that enables our individual understanding and experience. Tarot doesn't tell you what to think or do. Tarot shows a world of possibilities, options, and guidance. Tarot only serves to enrich our internal understanding.
Tarot is a means of spiritual experience from the inside out, not a means to impose dogma from the outside in. Tarot does not make concrete predictions or impose anything from the outside.
Like Taoism and Buddhism, Tarot concerns itself with living human experience and doesn't say anything one way or the other about any particular god or gods.  Tarot works well with any religion, especially with modern, diverse (and sometimes abstract) Tarot decks.
In 30 years of reading Tarot and Oracle cards, both privately and publicly, I've never received the slightest hint of a message for or against any religion. There is never a sense of 'this is the ultimate truth for everyone.' Tarot is always individual. Tarot is always well within the realm of the spiritual.
If religion comes up in a private individual reading at all, it is emotional chicken soup. Sometimes the cards will remind the individual to take comfort in their chosen religious practices whatever they are.
With every passing year, religion has become increasingly radioactive as a public topic. I actively avoid religion and politics in my public collective energy Tarot readings.  I want my work to be inclusive and compassionate - to the best of my ability I will not allow toxic energies into this blog, this website or any of my readings, even if it comes in the guise of religion.
Religion in the mainstream despises Tarot. Religion despises atheists.
Spirituality embraces both with open arms. There is nothing baffling about that at all.

569: How Not To Undercharge Your Construction Clients
This Podcast Is Episode 569, And It's About How Not To Undercharge Your Construction Clients
Contractors like you know how to pound nails, pour concrete, build homes and commercial structures, bend pipe and pull wire, install roofs, lay carpet, paint walls, and perform a thousand other tasks. So why are you not enjoying the same standard of living as other professionals? Because you are doing all of those things for anybody and everybody who asks you to.
Too many contractors are overworked, undervalued, and underpaid. We seek to change that for as many contractors as possible as we know how almost every sound, solid, hardworking, well-intentioned contractor is going out of business or barely scraping by, and that has to end here and now.
First, I must address how this could be an internal cause, such as how you deem your self-worth. Imposter syndrome is a common problem affecting people in various industries, including construction. For those who don't know, imposter syndrome is the feeling that you're not good enough or don't deserve your success despite evidence to the contrary. This can lead to undercharging clients, which is bad for business and perpetuates the cycle of feeling like an imposter.
In construction, imposter syndrome can manifest in many ways. You may feel like you need more experience or the proper education or training. You may be comparing yourself to others in the industry who seem more successful or knowledgeable. Whatever the case, it's essential to recognize that these feelings are common and don't have to hold you back.
However, when imposter syndrome leads to undercharging clients, it can have serious consequences. Not only are you undervaluing your work, but you're also potentially setting yourself up for failure. If you need to charge more to cover your expenses, you may need help to make ends meet or even go out of business.
So, what can you do if you're struggling with imposter syndrome and undercharging clients?
Here are a few tips:
1. Recognize your value: Remember that you have something valuable to offer your clients, whether it's your experience, expertise, or unique perspective. Feel free to charge what you're worth.
2. Focus on your strengths: Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your strengths and what sets you apart. Could you highlight these strengths in your marketing and client interactions?
3. Get support: Talk to others in the industry who may have experienced imposter syndrome. Join a professional organization or mentorship program to connect with others who can offer support and guidance.
Now that this mental dilemma is tackled, let's examine your systems and processes.
Working IN your business is a JOB (Just Over Broke)
Working ON your business is where MONEY IS MADE
What if you could do both? Work in your business and have a higher standard of living.
Because most small construction businesses focus on survival, you pay close attention to the bottom line. This makes sense, but it also leads to being seriously overworked. Contractors like you are under increased pressure to cut their prices to get enough work, which means they need to reduce costs.
What to do?
1. Accept that you have to raise your prices at some point
It's a daunting task to consider raising your prices, as the danger of losing customers will be front of mind.
But the bottom line is this: you can only deliver quality service if you're charging enough. It's that simple.
If you're spinning your wheels trying to make up for the difference, you'll lose customers anyway. You won't be able to deliver the excellent service you're known for if you're constantly overworked trying to find profits elsewhere.
2. Understand what's costing you
Consider your business costs at least once per year. Check which products or services are making money and which aren't. Then, take it further and pinpoint each area's breakeven position.
You will then be able to decide how much more you need to make to be profitable and comfortable. Evaluate all avenues – supplies, staff wages, bills, rent and utilities, training, etc. Doing this regularly lets you see which areas cost you more over time. Those that cost you more will likely benefit from a price increase.
3. Bookkeeping
A construction bookkeeper is an expert at managing, sorting, and recording your business's financial transactions. They've spent time developing their skills and experience and seen and resolved bookkeeping-related issues that you may encounter. Their expertise makes them more efficient at managing those issues.
Your bookkeeper helps you maintain accurate records and understands your financial circumstances. They allow you to assess how to make critical business decisions, such as whether now is an excellent time to grow or when you should hold back. Your construction accountant can provide insight and advice on how to charge appropriately for your services based on your financial records and industry trends and help you take advantage of those opportunities.
Final thoughts
Imposter syndrome is a common problem, but it doesn't have to hold you back in your construction business. By recognizing your value, focusing on your strengths, and seeking support, you can overcome imposter syndrome and build a successful and fulfilling career in construction.
You work hard as a small business owner and deserve compensation for the time you put into your business. As you work in your field, you gain more skills, experience, and knowledge, which translates to more value. If your construction company is better than it was a year ago, it's time to charge accordingly.
Don't undervalue yourself. Remember, as we always say, contractors like you deserve to be wealthy because you bring value to other people's lives.
