working dogs and show dogs can peacefully co exist. responsibly bred purebred dogs and responsibly bred mixed breed dogs can co exist. why are people so small minded.
#dogblr#i just had to read a conversation in a conformation group#where show people claimed flat out that because alaskan huskies and other mixed breed dogs work well in harness#that means that the working ability in the siberian was less important than the way the dog looked and i'm just/??#what standard are yall reading.#anyways dogs in the working group should have to obtain working titles to have register-able puppies imho#show dog people really just be ~like that~ and i am so glad not to be involved#and tbh as a musher its impossible for me to be as involved in the community and not see the modern dog fancy for the absolute bs it#like i love my purebred dogs gonna get more purebred dogs#but the purpose bred mix breeds have just as long of pedigrees as my dogs do in this sport and they win nearly everything#because they were bred to do their job appropriately#if a siberian husky can't pull a sled its not worthy of being bred ffs#a breed's history in work and its ability in work are still important even if the sport is dominated by responsibly bred mixed breed dogs#not to mention so many sled breeds are indigenous breeds co opted into the dog fancy by white people#who generally think they know better#chuchki people want these dogs to work#inuit want these dogs to work#even fucking leonard seppala would be livid if he knew yall didn't care about the working drive of these dogs#anyways these same people went on and on about how a dog with good drive to work from a working kennel was#'degrading the breed'#if that doesn't give you the ick you hanging with the wrong folks#very few show sibe people doing mushing in a larger capacity rn and it shows tbh#i love watching akc people getting all snobby about working line sibes#espeically uk dogs bc its like#oh wait that dog you just criticized won the breed ring at crufts you absolute nut#like maybe shut up and realize different interpretation of the standard exists and is a good thing

What they don't warn you about dogs is that you'll fall head over heels for multiple breeds and breeders and individual dogs that you know you can Technically afford to have at once but know it would be irresponsible to raise two puppies together when you've never raised one yourself,

Silly Doodle of TF2 if they were dogs. I wanted their accessories to resemble their human counterparts, but it can be difficult because putting a dog into human clothes is hard to draw.
Scout: A Boston Terrier. A breed known for being lively and happy, it's friendly and open to strangers. Scout as a guard dog would show you where his owners keep the valuables if you give him even a crumb of attention. Also, they can be bug eyed and derpy at times.
Pyro: A Dalmatian. Duh. With a bag on their head that resembles pyro.
Soldier: Solly is an American Pitbull Terrier. The fact that it's a controversial breed makes it an even better fit! ABPTs were used in combat missions in WWI and II. In WWII they appeared often on war propaganda posters. One of the most well known ABPT was named Sgt Stubby in WWI, and he earned himself numerous medals. Stubby is probably the deciding factor. Soldier has an American flag bandana and his food bowl over his eyes. He smells faintly of rotten bbq ribs.
Heavy: An Ovcharka (Caucasian Shepherd) while originally the breed hailed from Georgia, the USSR pushed to have the breed standardized. The huge dog breed was originally bred for guarding purposes, and has a serious and protective nature. Perfect for guarding his medic. He greatly treasures his Sandvich, a stuffed squeaky toy from the bargain bin at the pet store.
Demoman: A one-eyed Scottish terrier with a sturdy body and a manly beard. My personal experience with Scotties as a dog groomer is that they are absolute assholes who are wary of strangers squeezing their ass glands. I'm pretty sure Demo would bite me too if I touched his asshole. Demo has a squeaky bouncy ball that resembles a sticky bomb, one eye, and a hat that looks like a beanie.
Engineer: An American Bulldog. Mainly this was influenced by their stocky body and their friendly personality. Bulldogs are also a very intelligent dog breed that possess high endurance, agility, and strength. American Bulldogs were bred with the intention that they would be a farm dog. I would have gone with the Blue Lacy, but it didn't feel very Engie, despite being the only breed outta Texas. Engineer dog has doggles.
Spy: A french bulldog. Both the French Bull Dog and the Boston Terrier both descended from the Bulldog, so in a way they are related. While a poodle would have fit Spy as well, Frenchies are pretty expensive in their own right, and the cost of their medical bills might as well cost 5 poodles. They're like the luxury bulldog, and I feel like the fact that Spy and Scout's breeds resemble each other makes it better. Since dogs don't usually wear balaclavas, Spy-dog got his face stuck in a pair of red/blu underwear and started wearing them ever since.
Medic: What dog is more demanding, bratty, and sadistic than a Pomeranian? Pomeranians are extroverted, lively, alert, and highly intelligent dogs of German origin. They can be aggressive to humans and dogs to try and prove themselves. They don't seem to realize how small they are, and somehow wind up ruling the house anyways, even if there are other dogs. I can just imagine Medic-dog commanding Heavy-dog, and Heavy-dog going along with whatever he says. Medic has tiny glasses and a stray hair curl.
Sniper: A dingo. Aloof, mysterious, and a bit scrawny for his size, he's an excellent hunter who can brave the scorching bush and all Australia has to offer.

crazy how everything about mcd is so much more insane when you apply what i call the dog rule and that is when they are all dogs now in some way shape or form: an analysis.
when garroth is purebred, a hound made to serve, that does not know how to do anything but heel. he has purpose. he is sleek and well-groomed because he has to be, because he has always been tended to. a dog that falls into desperate spiral when that dynamic shifts - because who is he, without someone to follow, protect, love? a dog that becomes flea-bitten and hungry when he runs because he was never taught to take care of himself, to be his own master. he falls apart. he needs this, he knows, but what is he without someone to own him? a dog that cannot lead any kind of pack or family because it is afraid to understand the kind of animal it is if not in submission. if a parent, a teacher, he is promptly punished by his students as cruel reminder that he is not allowed to find joy in anything other than what his makers intended. a dog so desperate that it offers up its own leash to whoever will take it when things crumble - even if it means turning back to distasteful company. as long as it is held at all. time and time again, he tried to tend to the younger, weaker. he tried to feed them and lick their wounds - and time and time again, only to be mauled in turn. no more, he thinks. life was simpler when he was mindless, just four paws and a purpose. if that was what he was bred for, what business does he have pretending?
when laurance is a stray but made out of love. his coat shines thanks to the love of his family, his sister. he is sleek and well-groomed with them. the nether breaks him in, turns him a little wild. gives him cause to show teeth when threatened. when he bites, he mauls. there is something wicked in his animal eyes. he goes for the kill. when he bites, something in him wants it to hurt - whether his prey or himself, he can't tell. a part of the dog believes the suffering is natural because its maker declared it so. the pain wanes in and out like the cycle of the moon; life is unpredictable. he is braced to survive, sometimes with teeth already bared to expect the suffering. constantly on edge, pacing, waiting for the next disaster. a loyal, desperate pet that will follow to the ends of the earth - a desperation that borders on obsession. he will eat you alive, if only you would stay with him, inside of him, never leave him. never look at anyone else the way you would him. don't put him on a leash - let him choose who to lope after. his leash, in fact, is in tatters. he can't be collared. he merely follows, hungry at the heels of who fed him. his sense of duty is not of obligation but of love, a sacred need to stay at the side of those who treated him with kindness and them alone. and worse, he is burdened with the constant fear that if left untethered for too long, that obsession might turn carnal - that if wronged, he may not kill to eat and feel full, but kill merely to feel the blood on his teeth, just to feel the pain. feel something. anything. that he might enjoy the taste of his loved ones. maybe a leash is the right thing. maybe he needs to be caged. he can't bear either thought.
when they both bite the hand that fed them. when they bite each other. when they are dogs and kind of made for each other.
dante is a dog. aaron is a dog. aph is a dog. katelyn? oh you fucking guessed it. ivy. jeffory. zane. yeah. all of them are dogs. welcome to the dog rule fuckers its exactly how it sounds. are you sick of the word dog yet.

Wanted to expand on some domesticated animals of Mirum. These are basically cat-dog birds, ranging in size from cat to medium sized dog. Still need a name for group over all, suggestions appreciated! In depth info below the cut!
1. The OG This is the wild ancestral form, basically the wolf to the dog. They are from the grass/shrub lands of Mirum and spend most of the year scrounging around for food until the end of the wet season. Once the floods are over they pop out babies like nobodies business while feeding on the debris left by the flooding. By the time fire season rolls around their numbers are pretty scarce. They travel in little groups with multiple hens and one big buff man! But this man does not necessarily need to be a male, or a bird even! They were the first species domesticated by the chimera and the only one to leave Mirum with them.  The ‘Natural’ Breeds These are just the morphs bred into these fellas without any magical manipulation involved, so they still look relatively close to their wild ancestors.  2. The Cupid  These are purely pets, originally kept just for eggs they lost that purpose as more efficient birds came around for that. Now they just make docile lil lapbirds. Though inattentive owners will find old eggs hidden throughout the house if they’re not careful. Most of the time though they tend to stay by their owners ankles.  3. The Ruff Fluffy lil guys who make for great pest control, they’re a very sporty breed despite everything and need a lot of energy to stop them from destroying their surroundings out of boredom. Will do well with another ruff or dog of similar size, though they can be a bit of a bully in the care of a lax owner. 4. The Gallop Literally just made for running, can keep up with a chimera at full sprint and at a normal long distance run. For those with a more active lifestyle. Though they will just as happily laze around all day, just happy to be included honestly. These are also the best swimmers of the natural breeds with their extra oily coat.  5. The Dome This is a purely ornamental bird, stocky and colorful they are the most relaxed of all the birds. Most prefer chimeric company to that of other birds and have a habit of separation anxiety when not with their owner. In line with that, these are the most accepting of chimeric ‘talk’ with most quickly getting accustomed to projected commands. Though please don’t overwhelm your bird, casting the full range of sentient experience unto lesser beings CAN and WILL cause them existential distress! Not to mention your personality may displace your pet’s. 6. The Fluff  The original pillow stuffing. These guys feathers are softer than any other. Keeping a mostly downy ‘undercoat’ for their whole life. That being said these guys can get absolutely RANCID if not kept clean and tidy. Only for the most advanced and attentive of owners unless you want an unholy dingleberry beast skulking around. They also are VERY bitey.  7. Crested These are historically for eating, but have grown to be a very pish posh fancy breed. Most are pure white, thanks to inbreeding, and albeit are not the sharpest tools in the shed. But if you are looking for a bird who may just ignore your commands but love you eternal, this is your bird!
That’s them so far, will make the magical monstrosities later. Also wanted to try a different lineart style. Thin is nice but I miss my chunky brush. Glad to have tried it though!

hi! i really hope this doesn't come off as rude, it really isn't my intention!!! but when talking about the new breeding tendencies of maine coons, both you and some links talk about maine coons being hunting, working cats, or a functional as opposed to an ornamental breed, and even having thick coats because they need them to keep warm in winter. my question is what does that really mean? what are working cats exactly since they're not particularly good mousers and most of their hunting is decimating local wildlife? why would they need to keep warm when they shouldn't really be let outside generally speaking, and even if they were (which i mean a good breeder would not sell their pedigree cat to someone who'd let it outside willy nilly for hunting purposes hopefully), would it really matter that much since people ultimately buy maine coons in many climates, many of which not particularly cold?
like i don't want to imply that cat breeds are purely ornamental, of course there's factors like personality, medical predispositions, hypoallergenic qualities etc etc that are relevant, but i (as far as my knowledge goes) wouldn't really say that cat breeds have different working abilites (at least in any relevant way) since well, i'm not sure what an efficient, working cat that is safely kept is.
anyway i was just confused about this, again, hope this doesnt sound rude or anything, and i do agree that the direction maine coon breeding has taken is not great at all! this is not meant to be any sort of counter argument to that, i just don't really understand what a working cat is in these contexts as opposed to like. other cat breeds or just a normal pet cat.
Why does a reputable breeder aim to produce functional German Shepherd’s even when they’re going to pet or otherwise non-working homes?
The Maine Coon is a functional breed in the same way. No, it isn’t appropriate to allow any cat to free-range regardless of breed… but the Maine Coon should still be bred to a standard where they would be able to.
Just like a German Shepherd who never herds a day in their life should still have the temperament and build to he able to.
Maine Coon’s aren’t bred to the same standards as ‘ornamental’ breeds like Persians for the same reason working-type dogs aren’t bred to the same standards as companion/toy breeds like the Papillon even if all of them are destined for pet homes.

I've rewatched some key episodes from The Bad Batch Seasons 1 & 2 in anticipation of the series finale. While it's fresh in my mind, just sharing my two cents on what could possibly happen based on the prior events and character arcs.
Hunter: He's always been extremely reticent to join in Rex and Echo's efforts to help the clones even as the Empire uses and discards them for nefarious purposes. Hunter only gets involved if it will save a member of his own crew/family. He wants Omega to be safe and have a "normal" life in a place like Pabu, but at the same time, I'm doubting born-and-bred-soldier Hunter feels like he'd ever truly fit into such a life himself. It seems the major turn left for Hunter is to finally choose to throw himself full-throttle not only into saving Omega, but the clones imprisoned on Tantiss as well. Hunter can see by now that if Omega's ever going to have any chance of being safe, Hemlock and his research must be destroyed to the point she is no longer of use to the Emperor. If Hunter's arc goes this way, it is likely to cost him his life, but his sacrifice will have huge, positive ripple effects on Omega and everyone he saves in the process. I certainly don't want him to die, but the odds are definitely not in his favor knowing how SW has a penchant for killing off the father mentor.
Crosshair: He is the Batcher who has always questioned Hunter's leadership going back to before his chip was superzapped to follow the Empire's orders. Now that he's back with the Batch and clearly on a path to redemption thanks to Omega (similar to the redemption of Kallus in Rebels), I will be surprised if he is killed off in the finale. They seem to be setting him up to become the new main protector for Omega (with Hunter trusting him in that capacity despite what happened in Ep. 11). It seems possible Crosshair could become the new leader of what is left of the Batch if Hunter does indeed perish in the attack on Tantiss.
Wrecker: The Big Guy is going to survive (and I will include Batcher the space pit bull dog in this prediction). If they intended Wrecker to bite the dust, I think it would have happened with the demise of the Marauder. When Omega put Lula away with Tech's goggles, this seemed more about her putting away her childhood once and for all, not a premonition of Wrecker meeting a sad fate. Then again, they could pull out a Gregor's fate for Wrecker at the end just to feast on our tears.
Tech: As I've mulled over in other posts, I'm now 99% sure CX-2 is a Winter Soldier Tech. In the four remaining episodes, I don't expect they will even begin to redeem him, but maybe Omega figures out it is Tech and then the Batchers incapacitate him in some way to take him away in their escape from Tantiss. Perhaps it will be up in the air whether or not AZI the med droid and Omega can help Tech be anything like his real self again, but at least there will be hope. My thought is that if the team loses Hunter, I think the writers will counter that by restoring Tech to the team (I am recalling how my blorbo Kanan died but it led to Ahsoka's return). Maybe this is all clown-wig crazy talk, but Tech's my main blorbo in this series, so why not stay on the denial train for a bit longer?
Omega: Definitely will not die. I am quite sure she will insist on helping the children "specimens" escape (insert Zillo beast shenanigans here) and Emerie will be very much involved in how this all takes place. At the very least, Omega may convince Emerie to secretly transmit the Tantiss coordinates so Hunter and the others can find them. The big question with Omega is what the writers have in mind for her character beyond this series when it comes to the extent of her Force sensitivity. There is the possibility she will go train with Ventress and/or she and the Batchers will get absorbed into Rex's crew at least for a while to continue to help clones in need.
Echo: To be honest, his presence in the Batch has been very off and on due to his dedication to helping his fellow clones from the Empire's mistreatment (which Hunter has not wanted to be part of). So he already seems detached from the main Batch in many respects. As such, I'm thinking Echo will survive the attack on Tantiss to be part of whatever is planned for Rex's continuation story. Also, since I don't think Cody is CX-2, he could be part of the calvalry charge with Rex and Echo as their forces back up the Batcher's rescue of Omega. It would be great to see Rex, Cody, and Echo free their brothers from Tantiss, and I hope we won't lose either Echo or Cody in the process.
The Empire: Hemlock & Co. will suffer a major setback, but it remains to be seen if the Bad Doctor will be taken out (and by who) in the process. Emerie is very likely to die if she fully turns on Hemlock, but they could surprise us with her escaping along with the children under her charge. Nala Se is pretty much a goner and I doubt she'd cooperate again no matter what the Empire does to her at this point if she knows that Omega and the other children are safely away.
Well, that's all I've got, we'll see how much I got wrong when the credits roll. For now, here come the storm clouds of battle--and may our heroes prevail!

One Piece Monster Trio +Law and Ace: What kind of dog breed would they be?
Monkey D. Luffy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
American Pitbull Terrier
-In general terms american pitbull terriers are often misconstrued as something they aren't because people want to sugarcoat what their original purpose was, dog fighting.
-THIS IS LITERALLY LUFFY'S PLAQUE THROUGHOUT THE SERIES.
-DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE MEAN.
-Just means their inner goofball comes out when they are doing terrier things.
-LIKE LUFFY BEING A CAPTAIN.
-Though they're silly, loyal and more intelligent than people give them credit for, a purpose driven life with people that understand that insane drive and appreciate a velcro dog are best for these dogs (ahem, Zoro, ahem)
-LOVE TO EAT.
-Also their big gaping smile reminds me of Luffy too.
-Above pictured is Dino, a dog at my local shelter who has been looking for a home all his life. I have hung out with him and can vouch he is dog friendly, people friendly and an overall great pup. He is now with a foster home to care for his very specific allergy needs. I would take him home and rename him Luffy if I could, please check out his adoption page and share so he can find a good home!
New Bern, NC - American Pit Bull Terrier. Meet Dino a Pet for Adoption - AdoptaPet.com
Roronoa Zoro
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-ANATOLIAN SHEPARD
-Yall thought I'd say pitbull.
-Absolutely not because Zoro has PRESENCE and that comes with a livestock guardian breed.
-These dogs are intense.
-Bred to take on wolves and coyotes and to be willing to die for their families.
-The Anatolian shepard specifically is a very quiet livestock guardian dog hence why I chose this over the great Pyrenees.
-ALSO THEY WERE SPECIFICALLY BRED FOR THIS COLOR TO STAND OUT TO SCARE THE WOLVES OFF AND I FEEL LIKE THATS SO ZORO.
-Though they're MASSIVE they have athleticism similar to big cats because they were originally bred for the fields of Turkey.
-Y'all can't tell me that the level of athleticism Zoro maintains while being built like a tank doesn't make this match.
-Good head on their shoulders to access threats and work well within their job and independently.
Vinsmoke Sanji
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Dachshund
-HEAR ME OUT
-I'M SERIOUS.
-Dachsunds are go getters, HOUNDS.
-They're independent, drivey and WILLFUL and like who they like.
-They're meant to work alongside terriers (Luffy) to trap the badgers so the terrier can take the threat out.
-Literally the goat of hound dogs.
-EXPLORERS.
-EVERYONE SEES THEM AS SOMETHING THEY'RE NOT.
-Distinguished little velcro dogs who will recklessly fight for their person despite the threat to themselves (SANJI'S SELFLESSNESS??)
-Not actually breed specific but literally every dachshund I have ever met has a love for women.
Trafalgar Law
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-Siberian husky
-I'm going to get really specific and say a husky that pulls lead on the sled.
-These dogs will work themselves until they die.
-They're so stubborn that their drive and need to work literally has altered their metabolisms to adapt.
-Thats definetely what happened to Law's brain.
-ACTUALLY (Their metabolisms are biologically different than other breeds, able to practically slow and speed up at will)
-Not to mention they are meant to be working together at all times BUT are incredibly independent unless forced to work together.(LUFFY AND LAW).
-Smarter than you.
-Also, the markings on them just look so Law to me.
-Don't do well when they aren't working.
-Will easily fall back on anxious behaviors when separated from their jobs.
-Also, I can so imagine Law doing the quiet grumbling that these dogs do when they 'complain'.
Portgas D. Ace
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-ROTTWEILER
-It is in their blood to be silly (not a fact, just speculation pls don't cite me for a college paper)
-Drive for food and play is high.
-Originally bred as herding dogs but due to unforseen circumstances of their size and perception were forced to become protectors of the families of sheep they herded (ACE WITH LUFFY AND SABO).
-THEIR SMILES ARE THE SAME.
-Smart but dumb.
-CLINGY. LITERALLY JUST CLINGY.
-Threat perception and self preservation is skewed just because of the herding breed in them so it can make them a little too brave sometimes.
-Originally bred to be a family herder and fated to be an independent guardian, close to work but far from family.

"This type of dog would cost so much money from a breeder, no way it could be a rescue!"
You would think, but no. That's not the case at all. Any type of dog is just as likely to be a rescue for any number of reasons.
Some people have major life changes that require them to give up their dog. Serious injury, loss of financial stability, or the dog just cannot adapt to life changes such as new children. My family knew an elderly woman who had given us her sweet little dachshund because her allergies were a struggle (she ended up feeling too lonely without the dachshund, so the pooch was returned to her and she chose to stick with her medication).
Some people think they want a certain breed of dog but actually can't handle it at all. Just look at huskies! They're an extremely popular and well-known breed, but the majority of people cannot handle their exercise needs. My own shar pei-husky rescue (a designer mix, a light google search found someone selling this type of puppy at $900) requires an at least one hour long walk but I have to prepare to spend 2 hours outside with her. Plus she has a very high prey drive and can be quite stubborn, especially when I try to walk her past the pet store where the manager gives her treats. I met a lady who took in a Malinois-pit bull mix (bred ON PURPOSE) because the people who originally wanted this puppy couldn't handle his energy and were ready to give him up after a few months.
Some people treat dogs like disposable objects and just get rid of it when they're bored or just don't feel like caring for it anymore. Yes, this is a living being that cost them a lot of money, but that doesn't mean they actually care.
Some dogs are retired sporting dogs that got dumped. This is especially common for greyhounds. Within the past few years, Florida put a ban of greyhound racing which ended up displacing a lot of racing dogs. Alternately, dogs originally bred for jobs like K9 police work but didn't make the cut because their personalities didn't fit.
Dogs can can end up in shelters for any sort of reason and being an "expensive" breed can't always save them from this fate.

Same anon as prev,
Would Cream and Crush really mate with each other, like wouldn’t they recognize that they are mother and child and idk not do that??
Again /genuine question and curiosity, I have like 0 previous info about any of this stuff
Tumblr media
So with my birds they are not a color bred breed they are usually bred for type and size primarily. That means that their color genetics are kind of a mystery box. By inbreeding certain pairs I can learn more about what genetics I'm working with due to possible recessives popping up and seeing how the genes themselves interact.
Inbreeding is commonly used in chicken breeding to select for specific desirable traits. For me I'm selecting for health, certain temperments, production capabilities, broodiness, body type, colors, and plumage type and you can use inbreeding to your advantage by breeding genetically similar birds together.
I really like a lot of traits Cream has, so if I'm able to get more birds who are genetically similar to her, this is a good thing for me. I might even get birds who are genetically similar but better due to the genetics thrown in from the father. By inbreeding, I'm also able to see the BAD traits immediately as well and attempt to eliminate them from the gene pool. Chickens aren't dogs, they don't have genetic tests out there to see if they possibly carry a lethal gene, you have to find this out on your own.
In species that reproduce quickly like chickens and mice do there is also less of a negative impact. The things you need to watch out for are how vigorous/healthy the chicks are, longevity, hatchability, and fertilization rates but it can take a while for these to be impacted especially if you are working with a gentically diverse flock.
Obviously you don't want to only inbreed your flock without a care. The selection part is very important and it's also important to outcross to keep up the genetic diversity. You only want to breed from healthy birds regardless.
As for why a mother and son would breed its important to not put human morals onto chickens. Young cockerels actually tend to get weaned from their mothers (pecked and chased away) faster then their sisters because they start showing sexual aggression towards her and attempting to mate with her. It's also important to keep in mind that I'm the one who typically raises the chicks not my broodies so why would Crush not try to mate with his mother? How would he even know?
Anyway inbreeding isn't like evil or bad and it has its purpose. The chicken eggs you get from the store come from hens who are genetically very similar, so much so in fact that these hens are readily used by science in chicken related studies because of how gentically similar these production hens are to each other (this isn't a good thing but just an example) and most chicken breeds in general are a genetically similar as that is the whole point of creating a breed which is just a population of genetically similar animals selected for certain traits.
Right now there are a few different breeds i want to introduce to my breeding flock for genetic diversity and useful traits before I close it off from outcrossing. I have been trying to add new blood this year from one of those breeds but unfortunately I have been very unlucky. With my Crush x Cream chicks I wanted to see if there was any nasty lethals Cream might be carrying and I wanted to learn about her color more but I don't think I was going to continue to inbreed them again from there since the cross had served its purpose.
Here are some interesting links for you if you want to learn more about this sort of stuff and come to your own conclusions.

Lets Talk Farm Terminology!
Yay! I'm here to answer all the simple farm animal questions and misconceptions you've been too afraid to ask! Why? Because im bored and have thoughts and am reading Watership Down and want people to know the difference between "bunny," "rabbit," and "hare."
Leporidae
Tumblr media
You're probably thinking wow kes how bold of you to start out not only with an animal uncommonly kept by farmers but also starting with a scientific name few will know! And you're right, but I don't care! The Leporidae family includes rabbits and hares, and yes! they are different. Very closely related as they belong to the same family, but rabbits and hares are not the same thing. Simply: hares are bigger and wilder than rabbits. There are no domestic species of hare and they are more adapted to solitary life than living in groups/colonies. Looking at the image above you can note slight differences in facial structure and build, as well as most notably the ear length, with the smaller rabbit on the left and the larger hare on the right. Most Watership Down art features hares but I don't mind it all that much as the hare anatomy is more fun lol.
Now, what's a bunny? Bunny is an informal term used to refer to rabbits, especially young ones. It wouldn't be incorrect to refer to the long eared friend in your yard as a bunny but if you were writing a paper or just want to sound more serious, it would be better to say rabbit (as you notice, I am refraining from calling them bunnies in this post).
When referring to rabbits, their terminology is similar to other familiar animals. A male rabbit is called a buck and a female rabbit is called a doe, like deer or goats. However, a baby rabbit is called a kit or kitten and a group of siblings is called a litter, just like cats.
Goats
Tumblr media
Aw no more latin? As the domestic breeds of goat all come from the same species, there's no need for a broad scientific name as we all have an idea of what to picture, unless you're thinking of a mountain goat which are not considered true goats and are considered a goat-antelopes, making them closer in relation to muskoxen! Which is a whole different topic! Regardless, there's lots of different breeds of domestic goats (Capra hircus), like dogs and cats. Some are better suited for dairy production, some for meat, others are bred for their cashmere! Pictured above is a Saanen goat, one of, if not the most popular dairy goat breeds (in the US at least), known for their high milk production.
Many goat breeds have horns, which vary from antlers bc of how they grow and their composition. Horns can be removed when the goats are young, in a process called dehorning or disbudding. When horns are removed, their growth is stunted and they will not grow back once the animal is older. However, disbudding is a controversial topic as it is not painless and often unnecessary (really the only reason to dehorn would be safety towards others). Both male and female goats can have horns, although their appearance may differ.
I mentioned above that (mature, uncastrated) male goats are called bucks and females are called does. Many, many people use the terms billy and nanny to refer to goats. However, the better term would be buck/doe, and when people use billy/nanny it does peeve me. You may also hear the word wether to refer to castrated goats. Baby goats are called kids.
Cattle
Tumblr media
My favorites of the post, let's finish with cattle (Bos taurus)! Same as goats, cattle can be bred and used for many purposes like the lovely Brahman I've included above, a very recognizable meat breed. Cattle terminology can get a little tricky as its not as straightforward as some other animals.
Cattle is the correct term for these animals, as cow technically refers to a mature female (has been bred). No one's going to freak out if you say cows instead of cattle, myself included, especially because if you dont know the specific details of the animal its hard to know whether to say cow or heifer or bull or steer.
So, a cow is a mature female, and a mature male is called a bull. An immature, young female is called a heifer. A castrated male is called a steer. When referring to an immature male you can use bull or bull calf.
Many places you will see the term "ox" thrown around (not to be confused with a MUSKox mentioned previously) and there's a lot of misconceptions surrounding the name. An ox is a specially trained bovine. That's all it is. There's lots of regulations on how they are trained and all that, but that's the basics of it. It is most common and recommended to use castrated males (steers) because castration should temper their aggression and testosterone production; additionally, males are typically larger than the females. However! Female cows can be trained as oxen, as can bulls.
Technically an ox should not be referred to as such until they have completed their training, which can take years. Typically oxen are selected at a young age and routinely worked to develop good skills. They are used for tasks plowing or pulling carts, and as modern technology has improved, use of oxen has declined.
Tumblr media
Thaaaat's all I have to say about that today, I sort of led into each topic in little ways and I've nothing more to mention. Hopefully you learned a little, I think livestock are cool 👍

Snaaaiiiil!!!!! You fiend, you devil, you madwoman, you!
I love feral characters. I love wolf-coded characters. Not in the way that they're noble creatures of battle (but yes that too) but when they're specifically wolves that Aren't dogs.
Mind if I get poetic in your inbox for a sec?
(Disclaimer: this is exaggerated for the point of poetry. My family breeds, shows, trains, and sells dogs and we have respect for them as individuals and a species based off of the knowledge we purposefully learnt to give them the best care possible. This is angsty on purpose.)
Dogs were bred from wolves for obedience and companionship through years of selective breeding and compassion. Offering scraps of meat, scratching where they can't reach when they let you close enough, giving them shelter and names and soft voices.
But a wolf can never be a dog.
Because dogs become dogs through generations of evolution until they rely on humans.
Their sharp edges softened until they rely on protection.
Their hunting instinct numbed until they rely on food.
Their adapted bodies changed for cuteness until they would no longer survive in the wild.
The one thing humans rely on is their pack nature. They need dogs to want to be around them, whether it's for loyalty, or obedience, or companionship. The one most common thread between all dogs and any wolf is their need for a pack.
The evolution of dogs is fine tuned only by the successive breeding and death of each generation.
A wolf can never be a dog. It's instincts are too prevalent. It's nature is too wild. It still knows the taste of blood.
A wolf has to die for it's descendants to be dogs. But it will never know the comfort of a human as friend and family - as pack. It only knows the instinct of survival, the one that tells it to run from or kill the predator and competition.
(Again: wolves are perfectly happy in the wild, they have flourishing hierarchies and pack structures, they integrate well into conservation efforts. It's for the angst)
So the idea of a character that is all knuckles and teeth and claw? Licking my plate clean, sending compliments to the chef, asking for seconds, leaving a six star review.
I just love a feral woman with blood dripping from her teeth who could be compared to a cage fighting dog. And how did you know hyenas were one of my favourite animals you oracle you!
And the writing? Ooh! The way you described the spear sinking the ship then running along as it sunk, then blowing up another ship in an explosion that returns the spear to your hand??? The perfect type of flavor that fits in with the absurdity and extravagance of anime (and particularly one piece and the live action) fighting and I Loved it.
Garp and Bogard giggling and eating popcorn while watching with opera binoculars is the best though.
Also, the enemies stopping in confusion and disgust when they hear the bet with Mihawk?
Holding up a hand like ☝️"Hold please."
I love how she is entirely wild and untamed, even when using some femininity in flirting it's clear she's still brash and not poised in any way beyond poised to strike. I love how you commit to the characters you write!!! And the characters you write have such a wide variety of flavours!!! Delicious.
Tumblr media
I love you, Snail. Your inboxes always brighten my day. You are amazing, and I appreciate your many thoughts.
I very much leant into the absurd cinematography of anime on this one a little bit. Lots of fighting, lots of violence - usually the bane of my existence.
Garp and Bogard being little watchers, their binoculars focussing on the two warlords as opposed to, you know, doing their jobs.
I love committing to a variety of "reader" inserts, so we can all experience everything the way we want to. It's part of fandom magic that has always held me absolutely hostage: you are what you are, you add what you add. You have your own name, but it's not directly ever spoken. Enjoy the ride!
She was fun to write for. I may need to write another like her in the future.
Tumblr media
She was just fun. Not a whisper or crumb of an enemy remaining once she consumes them.

I’m part of a group that posts their dogs dna results, and aside from some of the worst pictures for trying to guess the breed, it was shocking to see how mixed many dogs are, and no matter their size or appearance, they all seem to have 15-20% pit bull or ACD or some other very active breed. I have nothing against active dogs, but I’m not physically capable of handling one. There’s such a grab bag of breeds and traits and temperaments that it’s actually what made me decide on a pure bred dog. I just want consistent. I want something I know I can handle. I hope one day people understand that there’s nothing wrong with wanting *consistent*
Well, pit bulls, acds, and chows (not mentioned but common in dna tests) are/were really common breeds for a long time when it comes to "dogs that were being bred without regards to bree. I'd bet if we give it another 10-15 years, we'll also start seeing *ahem* oodles of poodle showing up. Doodles are SO popular, and pretty much every breed's got a doodle mix at this point. It's already pretty common to see poodle pop up in little dogs and to me that says it's only a matter of time before it's everywhere in big dogs too.
I obviously don't think there's anything wrong with wanting a purebred dog 🤷‍♂️ all of my dogs are pretty much exactly what I expected and wanted them to be. No crystal balls, of course, but there's something to be saod for predictability, and each of my dogs fills the exact purpose I had for them.

Someone on FB posted a retort to the "good dogs" message about how we're asking too much from dogs, they weren't bred for that, etc. It's a load of bullshit. One of their points is that "we focused on work" and... again.. bullshit. A working BC, a breed literally developed HAND IN HAND WITH HERDING TRIALS, needs to be able to walk through a crowd without losing its shit. Needs to be able to be around dogs without being a risk. Needs to be calm and level headed with stock, with strangers, with strange dogs. And yet the majority of BCs are fucking batshit. A working retriever needs to be able to sit still for *hours*. Needs to be a family dog in the off season. Most "old timey" retriever people take their dogs everywhere; maybe not inside, the dog sits in the truck, either the bed or the cab, and waits. It goes to greet the kids getting off the bus, it barks at strangers and shuts up when told. It, too, can walk through crowds, accept strangers and strange dogs: goldens are what I know best, but literally a breed made for the elite. Meant to be shown off, meant to work with other dogs, meant to work around strangers. They're *meant* to be stable, historically. (Flat-coats, given their relation to goldens, would fall into this; on the other hand, Chessies were also guard dogs, so they're *meant* to be stranger danger dogs that are fuck around, find out) A hound is meant to work tightly with other hounds. Most hounds run in packs, or came from packhounds. They're meant to work with strangers - 20 or so horses and riders to do fox hunts, or men on foot to chase down their hounds in the middle of the night when something was treed. Coonhounds are from foxhounds. They're meant to be stranger friendly, dog friendly, pack friendly, etc. And you know what? Given they've not until very recently been hit with the conformation bug, MOST ARE. And in the off season, these are dogs meant to be safe to be around the hunter's kids. Safe for the KID to go out to a pack of 10+ hound and toss scraps and kibbles without danger. I can't speak on other dog breed's histories. I don't know them that well. But largely, it is bullshit to say 'dogs were bred for work, not for being good dogs (i.e. friendly in public, safe, nonreactive, etc.)' It is bullshit. Even if you remove 'our grandparents took dogs into woolworth's' and whatever else, most working dogs were ALWAYS meant to be sane and safe for strangers and other dogs... of course, again, barring breeds bred for guarding/aggression/etc. purposely. People in older times were not alone. They had communities. They had people coming over to help with the harvest, to help with the sheep, to hunt together, to go to the market, etc. And when you live in a fucking community, you have community safe dogs. Stop blaming owners for "expecting too much" out of their dogs because they want a pet that can do things in public safely and start looking at breeders that aren't breeding stable stock.
Also, we literally JUST, the last seventy or so years, started to drift from the 'community-focused' living way. Dogs were bred up until that point to be community-focused, as well: accepting of people coming over for harvesting, of hunting with another random dog, etc. Dogs that did not do well in community focus were not dogs kept (and usually, culled in some manner.)
Really, if you want to look at this topic, PLEASE look at the dogs of Appalachia. Not just the Redbones, etc. The Carolina red mutts, the random mixy mix born on a neighbor's porch. These are dogs that STILL live in a community-focused environment and they're far more safer than walking in a park in my city of 50k where other dogs are.
