Booktok is ruining books?
I am currently rereading the Inheritance Cycle so I can pick up the 5th book, and it's kinda crazy to remember this was written by a 15-year-old? The revelation is extra startling because I read fourth wing a few months ago-they have pretty similar premises: dragon riders, telepathic connection, special powers, evil empire, etc. Obviously, they are aiming for completely different crowds but if someone would have advertised Fourth Wing as for fans of the inheritance cycle and acotar I wouldn't bat an eye. The common premise got me thinking a lot about what I didn't like about Fourth Wing, and I'm very struck by how much better constructed the story is in Eragon. The world-building makes more sense, the character's voice is more distinct and overall the plot has an actual arc and the pacing is much better!
(Granted I'm not acting like Eragon is peak literature, it's derivative and trope-ridden and has a classic hero's journey that we've seen a thousand times. However, as a middle-grade novel it works well as an introduction to fantasy and throughout the series finds ways to differentiate itself. Moreover, it is just a better-polished work)
There is also this other conversation about the declining quality of books since this Bloomsberg article came out: TikTok Is Turning the Publishing World Into Fast Fashion & to say its sparked a lot of conversation would be an understatement, but much of the article focuses on the release of Iron Flame (Fourth Wings much-anticipated sequel) in particular, and I can't say I agree 100% with it.
1. The title is obviously meant to catch your attention but now that I keep seeing people repeat it I just want to clarify that the biggest critique of fast fashion is that it is unsustainable, promotes overconsumption, and relies on cheap and unethical labor practices, so like no I don't think comparing publishing to that is 100% warranted instead the issue is mostly surrounding lack of quality, misprints, and the fact that many books read like unedited first drafts.
2. The article spends so much time focusing on Yarro's appropriation of Scottish Gaelic, and the obvious lack of research that went into it, and while yeah I agree its poorly researched. I also don't think this is some new phenomenon like authors leach off other cultures all the time for aesthetic purposes, especially from the middle east and people don't really seem to care then soooo....
What I do think can be gleamed from Yarro's success and the strategy used by her publisher Red Tower is that TikTok is definitely having an effect on publishing, relying a lot more on hype through influencer marketing and special editions than the actual craft and quality of the writing, so it makes sense they would blow more of their budget on marketing, sprayed edges, and extra arcs than spend the time or money on editors or sensitivity readers. Furthermore, it is difficult to do either of those things when you are fighting an algorithm that only spotlights a book for a good 2 weeks or so before it moves on to something else. It's no surprise then that publishers like Red Tower would crack this formula through their special editions, influencer marketing, and forced scarcity, and its also no surprise that once the FOMO wore off and the hype bubble popped people realized the writing was actually kind of shit.
In terms of overconsumption, TikTok is always going to promote it. You need to post on the site almost every day for the algorithm to work for you and bc it relies heavily on videos rather than photos you need to own a lot more to make decent content. In general its bad, but unlike clothing that goes out of style and is tossed in the bin, people do tend to hold on to their books, and large personal libraries do predate Tiktok. I highly recommend you support your local libraries whenever you can!
Honestly, I think there is so much more to be said about the pressure Booktok puts on people to read more and how this leads people to skim or avoid more challenging books, and the rise in anti-intellectualism but I think I have rambled enough.

Chris Jackson's Story
Hi all,  Eragon was quite a game changer for me, i must've been in third or fourth grade when i was introduced to it, so maybe six or seven years old. The school librarian there loved to read (as one would hope) but more so he loved reading for children. Creating wild characters and even wilder voices to help draw our imaginations out for these stories. I loved it. It was my favorite time of school, but without fail he always left us on a cliffhanger be it mid chapter or mid sentence. What a guy... yet with all of that, i could not pick up a book and finish it. My dad was the same way, he has never read a physical book to this day. My mom tried with me but nothing stuck. It just never held my attention enough. Soon enough, my friend tony kept getting in trouble in class for reading this blue book with a blue dragon on it. He could not put it down. Maybe five times a day a teacher would scold him for it. I Asked him about it and he went off about how cool the book is and about the magic, dragons, and fighting it told. He showed it to me in the library so i could check it out. That's when i discovered eragon, the only book to actually instigate my love of reading. And now, 20 years later, it is still the reading love of my life even after reading countless books from different amazing authors. These books found their way to my dad (through audio books, he now "reads" and is ecstatic to be included), my mom, and my older brother. It's become a thing for all of us, even through family separation. So thank you chris, i can't even begin to explain how much your writing has influenced me, my reading, my infatuation with language, and my imagination. You are an amazing person. and thank you to all of his friends, family, and colleagues who helped him achieve what he has. We wouldn't be here around these stories without you all. Keep up the fantastic work!

AHH hello! Thank you so much for indulging me in this little fic ask situation and sending in this ask! I am a little obsessed with these ask games and it makes me so happy and I get so excited when people indulge me in playing! So thank you very much 🥰
How old were you when you started writing fic?
Young lol very young. I was so young that I didn't even understand what it was yet, I just knew I loved my favorite fictional characters and I was dictating stories about them to my mom to write down about them because I didn't know how to read or write on my own yet. Then I believe I was in fourth or fifth grade and my childhood best friend (who I'm still super close with nearly 25 years later woot woot) and I would pass a red notebook back and forth where we were writing a truly horrific Eragon self insertion fanfic. Then I got a little older and realized OTHER PEOPLE were doing the SAME THING but on the internet and it was truly wonderful. I didn't ever get my nerve up to *publish* anything until I was in college, and that was in the Hockey RPF fandom. (I did... have a collection of friends though that I would write fic for and then email it to them weekly in middle school and in high school- looking back I was 100% running a fanfiction black market lol) Anyway, that was a long way of saying very, very young.
5. Romantic or gen?
Can I say both? I obviously love romance, and primarily write romance, but I do really love reading a good gen fic and think platonic love and friendship is often times more important than romantic love. I also think its fantastic in fic when there is the romantic pairing, but also really strong and well written gen /friendship pairings as well. I've been trying to give fictional!Matty more friends in my fics for this very reason 😊
6. Fluff or angst?
To the surprise of probably no one: Angst. Bring it on. Make it hurt. Make me cry. I'll make myself cry writing it. Just, angst all the way. Angst.
Thank you so much again for sending this in! If anyone else wants to join this lovely anon in becoming my favorite person, the question list can be found here. Thank you for reading and I hope you have a fantastic rest of your day!
❤️Ally

Like okay. Even without rereading I know eragon isn’t like, the best ever. I remember a lot of the story and yeah it was very written by a teenage boy and some of the scenes were probably a horny thing that went over my head because I was in fourth grade and didn’t know what sex was. A woman is tortured and naked and that arc is why I love whump so much but like the amount of times women are in distress and also unclothed is. Teenage boy. I can’t speak on the quality of the prose because I haven’t read it in a decade. But like even if the prose isn’t great…. He was like 16 when he wrote it of course it’s not great? He was a child writing for others his age?
Anyways I wanna reread it so bad. I’m pretty sure if I do I’ll probably realize that parts of how I write or worldbuild come from it in a way, because it was as early and formative a work to me as warrior cats is to a lot of people.

when my brother switched to an insulin pump i took all the little syringes he didn't need any more and used them to drink capri suns in my room, 5ml at a time
one time when i was six i used charcoal from the fire pit to write threatening messages on the shed to enhance my playtime in the universe where i was the last dragon rider on the run from a corrupt monarchy that wanted me dead and the messages are still there but my family doesn't know who wrote them
when i ate oranges in my room i would throw the peels out the bathroom window instead of taking them to the trash because it was more fun
one time i got one of those uv invisible pens and wrote all over my little brothers' walls and showed them, but i washed it off before my mom could check for herself
when my family was selling the minivan we'd had for my entire life, was offended and scratched the letter A in the side like that would keep them from selling and even though it was the first letter of my name and neither of my older siblings' names start with A my mom didn't believe it was me because she thought i couldn't read because i was like five but i actually could read because i'd taught myself when she refused to read me my favorite book which i had memorized and i used it to learn letters and sounds
i once fully believed that id found a gate to the fairy world in the woods behind my house and that i could go through it at will but really all i was doing was sitting in a muddy stream for a few hours a day all summer
i used to eat leaves off trees for fun because i thought all leaves were a type of lettuce
i trained a chipmunk living in a stone wall to come out when i hummed fur elise by tempting him with nuts, named him mozart and then forget about him
when my sister and i shared a room, i used chalk to "clean" the nostrils of the wolves that held up her bedside table and now i use that table and the chalk is still there
when i was i think four i took a massive swig of rubbing alcohol because it was in a bottle on the kitchen table and i thought it was water and instead of telling somebody or using the kitchen sink to get a drink of water since my throat was burning i ran all the way upstairs to drink from my bathtub tap
once time the little plastic thing that comes in the air hole of a rubber duck fell out in my bath and i thought i swallowed it and it got stuck in my throat and for years after that i blamed that little plastic piece every time i felt like there was something in my throat
when my father decided for some unknown reason that he wanted a mentos vending machine but never followed through past bulk buying a shitton of mentos, me and my twin best friends would take many boxes  and fuck off into the woods and eat mentos until we got sick which is why i still can't stand mint mentos
when i was in sixth grade i took the the third eragon book out of the library but i dropped it in the bath and instead of telling the librarian i took the library dust jacket off and put it on my personal copy of the book which was the same edition and turned that book into the library
in fourth grade i used my scholastic book fair money to buy a dog shaped pencil sharpener instead of books and i named him raz and made him the general of my eraser army and the entire class got caught up in the ongoing battles between me and my friend Tyler who also had an eraser army and when raz's pencil sharpener fell out in fifth grade we declared him dead because his heart fell out and had a full on funeral for him at recess but i later dug up his body and took him home where i fixed him and gave him a nice retirement storyline with my other toys at home
the first time my mom let me stay up until midnight on new years the condition was that i had to stay in my room so i played by myself with a board game but since i was by myself i just named the little pieces and gave them relationship drama to keep myself entertained
i had three main imaginary friends, they were skunks and their names were Sam, Poosen and Samantha and Sam and Samantha were dating but Poosen who was Sam's best friend hated Samantha and looking back there was definitely romantic tension between Sam and Poosen

When I was in 7th grade we started taking the AR tests (that thing where you'd get points for passing that you could spend like once a month) for books we'd read that year. I found Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events that year and started plowing through the books our library had at the time. After the fourth one my English teacher got mad at me and told me off in front of the whole class for only reading the same series and not branching out. She said I wasn't allowed to check out another Lemony Snicket book until I'd checked out, and taken the test for, at least two different books from another series. The only two rules for the AR tests were that you couldn't take a test on a book you'd never checked out, and you couldn't take the test if you still had it checked out. During my lunch period that day I went to the library to return my current Lemony Snicket book and tell the librarian what happened. She told me to bring her the biggest books I could find that I'd already read before then. The plan was for her to check the book out to me, then check it right back in so I could immediately take the test and move on to the next. By the time lunch was over I had checked out, checked back in, and passed the AR test for all 7 Harry Potter books as well as all 3 of the Eragon books that were out at the time. I technically did what my teacher said with the librarians help. When I went to class with another Lemony Snicket book the next day she accused me of cheating on all the tests, took my book from me, and banned me from the library that year. It was worth it to piss her off for taking away something I enjoyed, but that was 17 years ago and I still haven't finished the series.

👾 Do you believe in aliens, 🎥 Fave film, 📖 Fave book?
So, lmfao, okay, I woke up today with 96 notifications. That’s the most I’ve ever gotten on Tumblr, what I thought was hilarious is that these notifications primarily came from two people who basically went through my entire blog and liked almost everything. I cannot believe that- like, the dedication and want to do that makes me laugh, but also feel really touched. Thank you so much!!!
👾 - Pfft, this makes me laugh. Like, okay, I’m not denying that there might potentially be other lifeforms outside of Earth, but also- I want to pretend that they don’t exist because the idea scares me!! Also, there’s this whole thing that if aliens came that they’d be infinitely smarter than us and be so technologically advanced that we’d have no choice to submit, but what if we were the dominant ones? How crazy would that be! That’s such an interesting thought.
🎥 - Anything with Will Ferrell in it. He makes me CRY from laughing- he’s just a big comedic baby and I just can’t help but to love almost every movie he’s in. With that being sad, ‘Step Brothers’ is my all time favorite movie in this entire world. I actually use this movie as a feel better movie- one year I had a bit of a sadness bout and actually played this movie, on repeat, for three days. It easily cracked me up and I felt better! Whenever I’m sad I pop the disk in my Ps4 and watch it over and over again. I don’t think there’s a movie that will ever make me laugh as hard as that one!!
📖 - I don’t read as much as I use too, but back when I was in... Seventh grade? I read the entire Harry Potter series in just a few weeks. I was floored to read those books, I really loved them! But, now I haven’t finished the series, but there’s a book called Eragon (I think the series is called the Inheritance Cycle or something) Oh, wow is Eragon so freaking good. It’s certainly not a short book, but the author, Christopher Paolini, wrote the first book while he was still in his teens. It has four books in total- I got to the third book, but at the time I didn’t have enough money for the fourth one so I fell out of it. Man, do I recommend these books though- if you like dragons and fantasy, it’s absolutely perfect. (Don’t watch the movie though- IT FREAKING SUCKS IN EVERY WAY)
THANKS AGAIN SWEET BBY YOU’RE AWESOME AND THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING MY BLOG! I saw your one reblog where you shouted, “WHERE ARE ALL YOUR NOTES” That was truly sweet of you to say! Thank you for enjoying my work so much, it makes me incredibly happy.

it’s clyde!
ahhh it’s so exciting i read the tempest last year good luck with memorization!
i wish i could be an actor too, but sadly i don’t exactly have the ideal features that would motivate someone to put me on a screen unfortunately
the idea of being someone else temporarily i have to say is definitely the most enthralling part of the career choice though i can’t say i’d want to actually be caliban he’s a little... questionable if you know what i mean
i’m canadian (yay :) and i’m in grade 8 but don’t let my youth mislead you i think i’m intelligent... hopefully. right now being canadian sort of sucks because we are in our fourth freaking lockdown and i’m pretty sure i won’t get a graduation this year which really sucks
ah this is so long sry amigo i’m rambling
this time my question issssss: what are your fandoms?
Caliban has his issues, as does the whole play. Racially it’s interesting. Also thank you!! Also!! If you want to do theater you do it! There’s always a spot for you somewhere.
I stg I sound like a cult recruiter whenever I talk abt theater lmaooo
For complicated hyperfixation reasons I’m in love with the entirety of Canada and am therefore very jealous. That doesn’t sound fun at all thought, I read an article about how bad your vaccine rollout is this morning :/ I really hope u get a graduation and hey, if you don’t, I’ll throw u a little virtual party on here!!!!
Don’t u ever worry about rambling to me I love it very much.
Ack let’s see,,, my fandoms: I am in the kotlc fandom bc that’s where most of my friends are on here although I’m pretty much done and fed up with the canon books. I reblog Eragon stuff a lot cause hyperfixation,,,,,, I’ve just started fixating on Nevermoor again (those are good go read them if u havent) so you’ll see that from me a lot now. Other than that I let the hyperfixation ramble as it will but I don’t watch much tv (just slings and arrows over and over lmaooooooo I need help) (<- aforementioned is an extremely niche shakespeare theater comedy that is keeping me living)
Look now I’m rambling lmaoo

15, 20 + 28!
ty for asking!!! ❤️
[ identity asks ]
15. five most influential books over your lifetime.
inheritance cycle - inspired me to actually start writing fantasy. it was definitely a ripoff of eragon w/ gryphons but like. it was a start.
lord of the rings - my mom & i used to talk about these books all of the time, which helped me learn how to analyze media & figure out what i wanted to write vs what i didn’t
the last unicorn - a beautiful story w/ so many quotable parts!!! it makes me wistful & nostalgic & just. i adore it a lot & the story has stuck with me through so much.
tales of a fourth grade nothing - this is the first book i ever remember having read to me. (having it read to me is also one of my oldest memories.) specifically, the part where fudge eats the turtle. i honestly thought i imagined the book until i read it again when i was older.
dragon riders of pern - this one taught me that fantasy + sci-fi could be combined in a brilliantly inventive way, & made me feel less silly for some of the concepts i was throwing around for a story at the time!!
20. would you rather be in Middle Earth, Narnia, Hogwarts, or somewhere else?
i already answered this but!!! i would want to live in the world i created for the metanoia series—eldora.
28. on a scale from 1 to 10, how hard is it for someone to get under your skin?
aaaah. that depends on the person tbh?? & the subject of discussion??? imma just say it’s about a 5, ‘cause i’m usually pretty chill.

The Importance of Diversity
I never thought much about diversity until I was teenager and I never realized how much the lack of it affected me. As a writer, I have been creating stories all my life. As a mixed race person, a Mexican-Caucasian American, I’ve been surrounded by white characters all my life.
I grew up with stories like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, Eragon, and The Magic Treehouse and I loved them. They inspired the genre of fantasy to me. I dove into books and would read for hours. In fourth grade, I read a book that describe the beauty of the main character’s pale skin, as did many other books. My fourth-grade self would never imagine the impact of how those descriptions of beauty would affect me.
Because I’ve been surrounded by books that described white skin as beautiful. That’s all I had known. I hadn’t seen any diverse characters, characters that I could relate to when it came to my race. Being mixed race, I was scrutinized by both sides. If I didn’t like this, I wasn’t “Mexican” enough but I was too Mexican to be white. I personality identify myself as Mexican first, but I constantly felt like I didn’t live up to other’s standards of what a Mexican should be.
When writing my first few novels (they really were terrible and unpublished), I wrote all my characters white without even realizing it. I did this, because I thought it was beautiful. I know that sounds weird but let me explain. All my fictional characters, I connect with them emotionally. They’re like my children and I can’t help but see them as beautiful. The problem with that is, is that the only beauty I had known was white. That’s why all my characters were white.
I didn’t even realize I was doing this until I started writing my third novel, a character who shared some of my experiences and was modeled after myself. I almost didn’t want to make her Mexican.
That’s when I realized how much the lack of diversity affected me. I couldn’t equate beauty to brown in fiction. I could see beautiful in all shades when it came to reality, sure, but not in fiction, where beauty had to equal “perfect.”
That’s why diversity is so important. Kids are so vulnerable and susceptible to messages we don’t even realize we’re sending out. They don’t realize the messages they’re internalizing. As a writer, I never want kids to feel that way. I want them to see beauty in their own skins. I want diverse characters as main characters. I want to see realism in their struggles.
~~~PS:
I’m still working to publish my third novel. I’m excited to publish it, actually, but this novel I want to traditionally publish. It deals with being mixed race, nerdiness, being self-conscious, and being brave. I’m still waiting for a literary agent to accept me, so fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, I’ve written two other works:
1)     Luvian Code: You thought Cupids were all about romance?
Think again.
Theodosius has been a self-love Cupid for centuries. He’s good at his job because of how much he loves humans. He hates sexual love Cupids, known as Eros Cupids, because of how cocky they are and he’s perfectly content to avoid them until Kai- an Eros Cupid- comes along and destroys everything.
Kai purposefully fires at the wrong mark- breaking sacred Cupid code. Now Theodosius is paired with the arrogant Kai and must find a way to prove to him the seven loves are equal or risk being stuck with him for eternity.
2)     The Dragon Maker: Christian loves dragons. He’s indifferent to people. He’s perfectly content to be a hermit until a villain bursts through his apartment and changes everything.
Luvian Code is available for FREE on Kobo, Nook, Scribd, and Playster.
It’s also on Amazon for $0.99. (If anyone feels like reporting a lower price on the site that’d be wonderful so that I can make it free on Amazon as well).
The master link to all of these is HERE except the Amazon one is above. Please leave a review if you get it. It’d really help me out and make my day. :)
Paul Burgett’s Story
“I Want to start off by saying ive read the inheritance cycle at least 40 times over, and even now i can flip to a page in any of those glorious tomes and tell yOu exactly whats happening. But i just fOund out about the fork, the witch, and the worm!! MinD-blowIng, but I digress. So I grEw up without a father, still don’t have one, and even thouGh i’ve had some good role models i was just floating through life. No real guidance, no strong figures that i looked up too, i was looking for a hero. We moved around a lot and then my mom snapped and started using drugs. Home life got really hard and theN she was in jail for a few years. (Broad strOkes because i don’t want to get all weepy) Long story short it sucked, and the rest of it isn’t much Better. But my older brother made me read this book in fouRth grade and i Hated big books. after the first ten pages i couldn’t put it down. I actually got several Detentions because i was reading during most of my classes, even reading class! Reading about this Amazing world you’ve created not only Helped me understand there are many reasons for a man to abandon his son, but that no maTter how random or simple you are there is greatness in you. Like how when eraGon was training with the elves after murtagh sliced his back in half. Even though he was an incredibly yOung rider, And the strongest human riders were strained to match the evles might, And Even the pains that racked him to his limits, he never quit. Ever since he pickEd up that egg he had the world set against him. and he never stopped. ThIs is what i looked up to, eragon bromsson (although my favorite character would be orik). Not as a father figure, but as a template for what a man should be. My hero. And it’s crazy that you invented him! I looked at this charaCter you wrote into existenCe and Looked to him as The role model That made me into the man i am today, and steered me into the right direction more times than i can count. Anyways, thank you so much for having the inspiration and the courage to share this beautiful epic with the masses. Atra guliä un ilian tauthr ono un atra ono waíse sköliro fra rauthr.”
4. how did your elementary school teachers describe you?a lot of my elementary school teachers thought i had adhd because i just wouldn’t sit still. in fairness it’s not off the table as i haven’t really seriously considered that i might have adhd, but my grades improved a lot after fourth grade, which is when my teacher finally made an effort to accommodate me in class. if i finished assignments early and got restless, rather than getting frustrated with me for not being orderly like the other kids, he’d let me go read in the quiet area. that also is where i developed my love for reading and writing
11. what you have for breakfast on an average day?a cucumber, an apple, a banana, and my vitamin supplements. sometimes also avocado toast, but only if i get up early enough to cut the avocado.
21. obsession from childhood?i used to be a huuuuge horse girl. also: sonic the hedgehog, my little pony, the eragon series, and (for a brief moment) the percy jackson series.
53. what is the current state of your hands?a little beat up. several cuts healing from mishaps with the soapstone carving tools and my nails are all too short because of my nail-biting habit. a little dry, too. i should moisturize
93. nicknames?the only one that’s stuck has been “kase,” which isn’t much.
98. favorite historical era?i’m always kind of interested in that 60s-90s time frame of american history, particularly as it relates to the historical lgbt movement there. outside of america, i really enjoy learning about the russian revolution. speaking in terms of european history, if a summary of it sounds like an inane soap opera, i’m into it.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OBSESSIONS RIGHT NOW?  Monsters. Of all mediums. I find it fascinating to pick the brains of people and society through their darkest creations. Plus monsters are far more interesting than heroes.
DO YOU TEND TO HOLD GRUDGES AGAINST PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE YOU WRONG? I cut them out of my life. I can forgive actual accidents or things out of your control. But if you knowingly betray me, you earned all my hate.
IN A RELATIONSHIP? Nope. Never have been. Not in a huge rush. I get attracted to people, but I don’t feel the need to be in a relationship honestly.
