read the original scandal in bohemia acd story the other day and im having so many thoughts that are probably not going to come to anything so im just throwing them all here
notes on scandal:
i love irene!! i like that shes obviously careful and smart and wary and can also admit her own mistakes (in the letter she leaves) but also. crucially. has a little bit of a show-off streak (saying goodnight to sherlock in her disguise and leaving a whole monologue of a letter)
(i know the letter was somewhat necessary to assure them she wouldn’t publish the photo and to get the king to leave her and godfrey alone. but still.)
there are so many Iconic Sherlock Holmes pop culture moments that i hadn’t realized were from this story specifically?? the 17 steps, the “you see but you do not observe,” the fire trick… i’m missing something else i think. i might remember it later
one thing i do not understand: why were she & godfrey in such a rush to get married?? that was *before* she cottoned on to sherlock being after them, wasn’t it? and what was godfrey telling her so animatedly before he headed out?
i mean i can somewhat understand the rush in that maybe she realized the king was staying in london and wanted to get out asap, but like, why not do it the day before, then? unless he had only arrived that evening? scandal fans help me
speaking of which, she and godfrey are cute together, i like them. i mean we never really see them interact but it’s clear they are deeply in love with each other
sherlock being in a hurry to get to the photograph before 8 am the next day because marriage could change her habits entirely, versus watson introducing this story by saying that he hasn’t talked to sherlock in a while because he’s been too busy being married…
i don’t think i quite understand what exactly the king did to her other than that it was Bad and maybe the reason why she retired from the opera? i feel like im supposed to have had a Revelation after reading the letter but im not well versed in victorian social norms enough to get it, i think? scandal in bohemia fans help, x2

Probably the stupidest thing I've drawn, but, ever since my sibling found out that they're Ace I've wanted to draw this for a minute cause I think it's funny.
Other half was drawn by my lovely sibling, @marshp0tao. Congrats on the Ace king, we love to see you finding yourself

Rules: List the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!
Thanks for tagging me @jianghuchild :D
I'm going to cheat and do 11 fics because I've posted 11 and leaving off The Long Way Home feels so weird.
1. The Long Way Home: All of Tokyo was dark. 2. Cannon Fodder: Hisano sat behind his desk, in his basement office, and regretted once more that he didn’t have a window to stare out of. 3. Bloodlust: First they drag him in front of Hatter, a cocksure lunatic who doesn't seem to know how to button up his shirt. 4. Neither of us were good people: ‘You’re going to do it,’ Chishiya tells the nurse. 5. Freelance: Niragi’s pretty sure you’re not supposed to fuck your drug dealer. 6. Road to Nowhere: The sea lapped at the honeycomb cliffs of Ikitsuki Island with a rhythmic normalcy that almost could have fooled Val. 7. Teeth: Niragi is seven years old when his grandmother dies. 8. Bad Habits: Nagase is coming to Busan. 9. Call of the Void: Niragi doesn’t fully appreciate the absurdity of the situation until the door of Chishiya’s bathroom clicks shut behind him. 10. Warmth: It’s february. The winter cold pours in through the windows, despite the double glass, and the sun spills in through the gap between the curtains. 11. Icebreaker: Niragi lays on his stomach on the roof of an office building, peering down the scope of his rifle.
Huh. I find it a bit hard to see a similarity between all of these, though most of them do seem to fit the general fic vibe I was going for with each story, in hindsight. I think I either drop some sort of (semi)shock value statement (Tokyo is dark? Chishiya's forcing someone to do something? Dying grandmother? Niragi's relationship with his drug dealer?) and hope that drags the reader into the first paragraph, OR go for vibe immediately and just do a full description ("cocksure lunatic" is a favourite tbh). Though some of these you could slot into both categories (Call of the Void, Road to Nowhere?).
More analysis in the tags I couldn't help myself
Thanks for tagging me! I'm never sure who to @ for these kinds of things but if you see this and want to do it, consider yourself tagged!

whatever I need to defend my blorbo. so deep in the brainrot that im gonna defend the steve harrington six nuggets speech
i for one think steve’s decision to tell nancy was, first of all, the fault of everyone around steve (dustin, robin, eddie, and their collective need to push the stancy agenda on steve for some reason) and, secondly, really more spur of the moment in a “we might die soon” type of way than anything. he tells nancy first about the dream he had because it’s HIS dream, it’s what HE wants for HIMSELF and it’s something that he doesn’t really think he’s going to get, because he probably thinks he’s going to die. he’s confiding in his good buddy nancy because she’s the one who sat with him in that RV and reminded him of what he expects of himself.
he first tells her about the dream Not because he expects something from her, but because he wants her to understand that THIS is what he wanted, this is what he still wants. steve knows that nancy doesn’t want six kids. he knows this. she tells him to his face right there how much it sounds like a nightmare. he! knows! he thinks he wants her back because everyone is continuously telling him he does — and when has listening to his friends in a moment of steve’s self-proclaimed stupidity gone all that badly for him? he thinks he has to adhere to this thing that his friends want him to be doing and want him to be feeling, when he’s been over it or nearly over it for at LEAST a year and a half now.
in season 3 during the bathroom scene with robin, she asks him if he’s still in love with nancy. steve says no and he does! not! hesitate! YES, it’s because he’s about to confess his ill-advised crush on robin, but he’s also clearly telling the truth. he’s over it! he’s been over it!
later, in the upside down, steve tells nancy that she was always there in the six nuggets dream. Weird as fuck, yes, but I don’t have as much of an issue with it as I did when I first watched. steve thinks that no one is ever going to love him again romantically. i even hesitate in using the word “again” because i don’t believe steve has Ever really genuinely been loved romantically in the first place. what nancy felt for him had to have been platonic either the entire time, or turned so through all the bitterness she also had towards him after what happened to barb for her to have been so cruel to steve at the halloween party in s2. the only point of reference steve has for a “good” relationship — that being a relationship where he was in love, even when the other person was decidedly not — was nancy. he believes that he wants that back. and he believes the only person who can give that feeling back to him is, again, nancy.
he tells her that she was there in that dream because, despite the fact that he shouldn’t, he still wants that sort of closure, letting her know this dream he’s had since they’ve been in love. he tells her about the knock on the head that she gave him to make him realize what an idiot he’s been (the knock on the head being nancy’s “bullshit, bullshit, bullshit,” which, in my opinion, is, in itself, bullshit) and how he’s “crawling forward” now, getting more and entirely over nancy, which! funnily enough! he could have been doing all of season 4 if his friends hadn’t all tried to force steve to be in love with nancy again!
i think that the least weird part of the speech, and the most relatable I guess, is steve thinking about whether or not him and nancy could have stayed together if he’d gotten that wake up call from someone else. a part of him is still going to love her and, again, a huge part of him still believes that she’s it for him BECAUSE of the fact that he doesn’t think anyone is ever going to love him again except for her. all of s4 steve spends time agonizing over his dates with girls not working out or his relationships only being built off of sex, and his insecurity shows soooo hard!!!! he doesn’t think he’s capable of love!!!!!!!!!! nancy was the last person to show him any romantic affection and he wants that back because he as a person is not independent like nancy is. steve wants to be loved again, thoroughly. to him — and as it seems, to his friends as well — nancy is the only one capable of doing that for him, which is just simply not true whatsoever.
while it’s a weird speech and steve would probably have been better off not telling it, it’s not as much of a butchering of his character as it is steve desperately wanting to be loved, which is perhaps the most in character thing the duffers have ever inadvertently done (because let’s face it. I don’t think they thought about ANY of this shit I just wrote). steve is thinking of nancy as the only one for him because she’s the only lasting relationship that he knows, even when it ended in his own utter heartbreak, even when she’s now with a totally different man. he shares this dream with her because he has no one else to have sit in that seat, and thinks he needs someone to fill that void.
anyway. this all could have and should be a perfect set up for the epic bisexual awakening of steve harrington. the speech could have gone better. could have been written better. i hate stancy so much. cheers.

something willow and amity related i want to say
Idk if it’s me but I’m seeing some passionate willow stans projecting onto willow WAY too hard wen it comes to her and amity, to the point where they’re becoming borderline amity haters.
What I’m picking up is tht it’s a trauma response on the fans’ end and they’re projecting their hurt into willow’s eyes whenever she’s with amity bc they don’t want to move on from their bully or they wish they got closure, i think tht’s what they want from amity and willow.
But here’s the thing, we’re not willow. Willow knows amity is sorry and is trying, and amity thinks being protective of willow is a way to make up for everything, not knowing it’s hurting willow.
Ik ppl want a “sorry” but actions are louder than words and sometimes, you don’t really need a sorry to move on but a “sorry” can be impactful if meaningful.
Ik you guys are pissed at amity for planting tht “half a witch” mindset into her and haven’t forgiven her yourselves bc she might’ve triggered a memory, but again, at the end of the day, we’re not willow, if she has fully forgiven amity in labyrinth runners or is moving on knowing there’ll be flaws, but knows in the long run, they’ll still have e/o’s backs, then tht’s her (and also toh crew) decision to make and I’m glad tht she’s thinking of her present self than holding onto the hurt from the past.
Sorry i was in a rush typing this and i struggle with grammar so again, sorry if my words are all over the place
Oh! And disclaimer: I’m not tryna to tell anyone what to do with their trauma and forgiveness and i have no right too. It’s different for everyone and ppl can choose to hold onto the hurt of the past or move on. I hope I worded this properly.

Can I hear your essay on purity culture in fandoms? only if you want ofc
Sure! It's primarily a mental essay cause I never write anything down but I'll do brief summary that will end up not so brief!
Before I get into it I just want to define a couple things so I don't accidentally say something I don't mean to say. When I talk about "problematic" works of fiction, I'm not talking about harmful rhetoric that an author consciously or subconsciously puts into their work (things like perpetuating stereotypes). What I am talking about is when the work is about "problematic" things like exploring an abusive or manipulative relationship, tapping into the darker side of human nature, and exploring similar concepts. Secondly the "purity culture" I'm going to be talking about is moral correctness and moral superiority.
In the last couple years, I've noticed a trend in many fandom spaces where people will apply real life morals into fiction as a "gotcha" card. It's not a very vocal part of every fandom, but there are some fandoms where it's reinforced and often encouraged. People will say that because a story features x morally reprehensible thing it is wrong and therefore you shouldn't like it. From my experience it manifests in hatred of characters or ships. A really good example of this is all the c!Dream discourse. Because of their dislike for him, people will try to gain moral superiority over "c!Dream apologists" by saying that they condone "abuse" in real life. Which is extremely false.
Another way this "purity culture" manifests is through what I call "fic policing" (it doesn't happen with just fanfic, it happens with published work too). People write problematic things all the time, it's one of the best things about fiction. Authors can explore some really fucked up things about humanity through writing and tell stories about some pretty "problematic" stuff. Many of my stories (both fanfiction and not) feature insanely fucked up people doing even more insanely fucked up things, because I find those kinds of things really interesting. It doesn't mean I would do or even condone any of the things I write about in real life. I mean, there's an entire genre dedicated to horror for reason (and there's a reason it's so popular). However, not everyone is a fan of such works and people will try to "call out" writers for exploring those dark themes, claiming that it is so wrong and fucked up that they wrote such a thing (as if the writer had actually done those things in real life). Sure, there are some exceptions for what someone should and shouldn't post/publish, but if it is entirely fictional (as in not including any real people), there really shouldn't be an issue. If its a work of fanfiction that is properly tagged, there is no reason to cause a scene. If you don't like it, move on. If it's published media, see if you can find trigger warnings ahead of time or when you come across something you don't like, move on with your life. It get even worse because sometimes when the morally reprehensible part of a story is CONDEMNED IN THE STORY, people will still call it out for being "problematic."
Some people will feel threatened that someone likes a certain character, piece of media, ship, hell even a person and automatically try to gain moral superiority to feel validated in their dislike and to shit on others for liking that thing. People can't just dislike something for no reason so they try and twist it into being something "immoral" so that they feel just in their hatred. I mean, think of all the insane criticism Dream gets. Some people decided they didn't like him and from then on tried everything they could to show how awful of a person he is, going so far as to make up complete lies and twist the truth so far its hardly even recognizable. (Fandom purity culture and twitter "wokeness" kind of go hand in hand).
tl;dr: People need to feel validated in their hatred of something so they will do anything they can to demonize it and the people who like it.
I'm gonna leave off on this note: If you think you are a better person for disliking something and are constantly jumping through hoops to prove why everyone who likes said thing are morally wrong, you may want to take a step back and think about whether it's really worth the effort.
