Liminal Void/Valiant Horizon double header update
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi there! Been awhile since I checked in about either of these.
Liminal Void
Since my last update I've proceeded to make a ton of ships (18 total). Mostly they're a stack of Integrity/Armor, a unique trait for each (like cargo ships always have extra cargo/storage/etc space, naval ships have integrated weaponry or are better with it, etc), a room loadout, and some Hardpoint tools/weapons.
Room loadouts are functional things like storage, medical bays, etc but they're also more standard stuff: where do people sleep? How good of a galley do you have? Is your head a broom closet or can you take an actual shower in there? Things like that.
These are super important because I'm thinking about not only functional stuff but how awful it is to live on a ship that's built solely for function. Unless you're living in the lap of luxury as far as your loadout, it's guaranteed to be worse than any living conditions you can find not on a ship. Maybe that's fine if you mostly expect to be getting rooms while in ports though! Decisions, decisions.
They also tell a story about what kind of crews typically run the ship: For example, for the Ore Hauler, there's a few nice bedrooms for officers and a bunch of awful, crowded bunks for the proles, because there's an expected hierarchical relationship between overseers and workers; but for the Brawler (a close-range gunship), it's tiny to fit more weaponry and only has one bunk with a tiny head, because it's not expected to be stayed in for too long and is expected to always have someone at the helm.
Likewise with Hardpoints. For example, unlike all other civilian craft, the Ship Carrier has weaponry because it carries other ships: it's a prime target for hijacking. Others have things like work platforms, external quarantine storage, and asteroid anchors, some of which can also be used in combat to awkward, but great effect.
Rooms are by "segment", which I'm thinking of as roughly a 15 cubic meter space. Multiple-segment rooms have an amplified effect, but take up more space on the ship - and if it gets hit, all segments of the room are probably damaged or ruined.
I also added rules for how to do stuff with them. It largely follows the Total//Effect Clashes and Dueling idea but I've made a few key distinctions here:
A lot of "combats" aren't really going to be combat as such, especially if you have a civilian ship. Mostly you just want to get out unharmed. Being in space combat is a really bad, expensive idea! And sometimes there's nothing to fight as such, there's just a big asteroid field trying to tear apart your ship. So there's some rules, mostly leveraging progress/resistance and threat/tension for that kind of thing.
I'm going with Integrity/Armor: Armor's cheap to fix and acts as ablative HP to Integrity's Real Shit HP. Much like personal injury, if you take Harm to Integrity, you're rolling to see if something really bad happens.
I also added ~The Economy~, the long-awaited rules for how to buy, sell, restock, etc. I'm following a lot of the SRD's Income and Expenditures but I'm introducing a few concepts that I'm probably going to back-port. The general vibe is:
Currency is Credits or Scrip. You can spend credits anywhere, you can only spend scrip at company stores. (Or you can exchange for credits, but it's rarely 1:1.)
Each thing you're getting/giving has a set Magnitude (representing what ballpark of price it's in) that's 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and so on. (Values chosen for easy multiplication: most people can multiply by 2's, 5's, or 10's and it's all variations on that.)
But that Magnitude is multiplied by a Value: this one's a die roll depending on how much the buyer/seller values it, scarcity, negotiation tactics, etc. (Standard Total//Effect Low/Mid/High, except on the low end instead of Low - 1 potentially going down to 0, it bumps Magnitude down a step.)
Likewise with expenditures like fuel, food/water, repairs, etc., each has a value that's determined on purchase. Certain facilities on your ship can make this easier/cheaper or negate it.
If you can't pay for, or don't want to pay for, an expenditure, you can Risk It: this gives a chance every time the neglected thing's stressed to have it fail at the absolute worst time. (Like if you Risk It with fuel, well, I hope you're packing a distress beacon.)
I'm working on debt next but it's likely going to be like: you put down your ship as collateral for a loan, you have to pay interest every time you resupply (a portion of the load depending on how good a deal you got), if you can't or don't pay you might get a repo man after you.
I also wrote up some of the setting, specifically the three poles:
Earth's where it all started but it's kind of old and busted compared to the old days. It's still the breadbasket of the galaxy, so there's some life in it; but for the most part, it's very hard to live there unless you're already rich, having an atmosphere is a prized commodity.
Mars is where most of the galaxy's metal/hydrocarbon mining happens (as penal labor, largely). It's also where most of the shipyards are.
Ganymede was founded by techies and focuses hard on high-tech stuff and experimental working. They're also the ones most interested in pushing the limits of the known universe further out, but their corporations met stiff challenges from inhospitable regions, mysterious occurrences, and the desire of those out on the frontier to break free.
I wrote a few scattered things for these: a page of description each and a handful of plot hooks. This is about the level of setting I'm aiming for, but I'll add a few more categories later.
Valiant Horizon
On a less grim note than space capitalism, Valiant Horizon's mostly in "flesh out the soft stuff" mode - the main mechanics are basically done so it's mostly a matter of that and refinement. Specifically, I recently tackled Heroes/Classes as a concept.
The idea behind each Class is that characters in this setting were bonded with hero-containing Crystals. Classes are just the archetypes of these heroes. As part of the game, when you level up and when you meet new characters/heroes in the same position, you flesh out the story of that hero: starting with an In Media Res moment in their life, and adding more as you level up. You can learn up to 6 things about a Hero: this takes you through the 1st Tier (Fledgling, levels 1-3) and 2nd Tier (Famous, levels 4-6). At Renowed Tier (7-9), you're focusing on making a legend of your own.1 This has a multi-fold effect: not only are you describing the person in your character's head, you're creating the setting through anecdotes (which I love to do, see ANOINTED) and defining your character better in the process (as there's meant to be some kind of special affinity between the two: in defining the hero's life, it's also reflecting on their bonded character.)
So that's those! Major progress being made. (And I got an artist for Valiant Horizon. Hopefully more on that soon!)
I haven't written this fully in yet but at Level 10, the pinnacle at Heroic Tier, you perform the final thing that seals your legend: you come up with a Class based on your exploits that survives to the next game, and your character is now a Hero for someone in the future. ↩︎

Hello for the last 11 hours or so I have been extraordinarily anxious because I was an idiot and didn’t just fucking hang up the zoom call instead of going along with predatory sales tactics
It is so fucking shady to say “heyyyy we specialize in this very specific topic that very few people are specialized in and we can help YOU for the low cost of *mumble* but only if you sign up right now. Isn’t what you just told us is important to you worth like, ten thousand dollars? Well, you can get that from us at only SIX thousand dollars BUT ONLY IF YOU DO THAT RIGHT NOW. I mean you could take a couple hours to think, but we only have four spots left and nine people on calls right now. Oh sure, you can pull up your budget, but don’t stop sharing your screen on the zoom call, I want to be able to help you out with the details. Oh, don’t be silly, this is all just boilerplate stuff, blah blah, I’m going to just keep talking while I watch you read it. It SAYS it’s a loan, but it’s simple interest, not compounding interest, and that big number is what you’ll pay only if you go through all three years of the payment plan, and we offer you a 100% money back guarantee because we are THAT confident in our ability to get you into the job you want. And when we do get you a job, we’ll negotiate to get you a big salary and signing bonus, and you can just pay the remainder of what you owe us with that! Easy! And you’ll have LIFETIME ACCESS to all these valuable resources, including the network of your peers who have gotten you on the inside track to your job!”
I feel like a fucking idiot for going through with it and now having to spend a bunch of time and brainpower to get out of it. Why did this shit work with me. (It’s because I’m impatient and slightly desperate and able to justify it to myself… until I have the “oh shit what did I do” feeling when the zoom call hangs up.) I hate this for me and also for the people it works on.
I watched his eyes move as he followed a SCRIPT I am so ANGRY with myself rn

if you think biden is the best available candidate and the choice that most reduces harm, great. All we can realistically ask of each other is to make what we think is the best tactical move to reduce harm.
please vote for biden if you truly think he is the best choice. Thank you for seeking a better world.
But please don’t make fun of or dismiss the blood on Biden’s hands. He was the prominent voice for the Democrats guiding the country into an invasion that killed hundreds of thousands of humans. It was not a guaranteed thing. Many in the military correctly believed this was a bad long-term solution, and non-British international partners were split to say the least.
Biden very quickly set the tone of helpful/submissive opposition where an unprompted invasion of a sovereign nation was absolutely on the table, it was just about negotiating specifics. The American people needed to be better convinced for this to happen, he said. He provided cover for and instruction to the second Bush administrative on how to sell the war. He campaigned for the invasion process to last “at least 4-5 years” for “stability”.
He both set the goal posts and knocked the ball in. He said that the American people would have to be 100 percent convinced that Hussein had nukes and would use them, on us. And then he backed the lie, the great WMD lie that was always a lie and resulted in the death of one very bad man, yes, but also hundreds of thousands of innocents. Without that proof the American people would “need” ever surfacing.
he was not hoodwinked, he was a ranking foreign affairs senator, he had access to the best most convincing data, which as we all know was a big fat goose egg. he backed the lie anyway.
if you still think, despite being the candidate with the most blood on his hands, Biden is the best choice for harm reduction, maybe he learned his lesson and won’t do it again, then fair enough. Thank you again for wanting to reduce harm. Wanting that is enough for me even if we disagree on tactics.
Just please don’t throw the truly countless victims of Biden’s active complicity under the bus and belittle bringing up his bloody record. People call him Genocide Joe and Bloody Biden for a reason. A deeply sad reason involving hundreds of thousands of dead people. Please don’t make light of that. Thank you.
Literally no one but you is calling him Genocide Joe over the Iraq War Senate votes from decades ago. They're calling him Genocide Joe because the same people who tried to push the Tara Reade hoax and Dementia Joe bullshit last election cycle are trying to find something that sticks this time.

Possibility of Learning Skill Through the Sales and Negotiation Program
Sales and negotiation programs are beneficial for a number of reasons. They not only assist buyers and sellers in reaching amicable agreements, but they also aid in the development of enduring, devoted relationships that produce lifelong clients. They avoid conflict and frustration when trying to determine fair prices and outcomes that benefit both parties when both parties enter a sales negotiation and understand the significance of how to negotiate effectively. Some other essential qualities that can be developed by sales and negotiation program are as follow
Tumblr media
1. Demonstrate value
When you are certain that your counterparts recognize the worth of your product, only then should you even consider negotiating the price, offering discounts, or making concessions. In the event that the prospect is only interested in the price during a price negotiation. You’re setting yourself up to either lose the deal or -worse- the profit.
Instead, you should employ your negotiating abilities to support your price with facts. Would you be able to present qualitative or quantitative data? Something to demonstrate to your customer the value of your request? What about references, case studies, and evaluations?  These are excellent ‘proof devices’ that prove how valuable your offering is.
2 Know when to walk away
During sales negotiations, you might come across situations where customers demand things that your company can't provide, like radical changes or enormous price cuts. It’s important to know that you have the option to walk away. However, it would be best if you initially tried to leave conversations by expressing dissatisfaction. Particularly given the way the process is changing. If the potential customer isn't responding to your cues, politely end the sales conversation. You will both avoid wasting time and energy by doing this.
3 Patience
Have you ever thought about proposing a concession during the sales negotiation? Yes. It might seem radical or downright insane. But, it gives both parties a chance to review any significant requests away from the spotlight.Think about it. Nobody wants to rush into a deal they’re not 100% happy about. So it’s imperative to slow down, take a break and check the situation now and again. Practising patience is a crucial negotiation skill you should think about incorporating.
4  Ask for something in return
You're about to begin a working relationship that, in order to be successful, demands complete respect and trust from both parties. Therefore, get in the habit of requesting something in exchange for concessions. This tactic guarantees that everyone walks away from the negotiation with something. Overall, a tactic which will only help your working relationship prosper.
The sales and negotiation program from Maximize U focuses on the art and science of effective negotiation as well as the steps necessary to create a win-win scenario in which all parties involved are better off as a result of the negotiation than they were before it began. The Battle of Scheveningen was a naval battle near Ter Heijde on 10 August 1653, during the First Anglo-Dutch War. In the middle the Brederode, the Dutch flagship of admiral  Maarten Tromp is in combat with the English flagship Resolution under the command of admiral Monk, by Joannes Abrahamsz. Beerstraaten between 1653 and 1666
After their victory in the naval battle at Gabbard in June 1653, 120 ships of the English fleet under the command of George Monk blocked the Dutch coast and brought up numerous merchant drivers. The Dutch economy quickly collapsed, mass unemployment spread and the population soon suffered hunger. On 3 August, the Dutch Admiral Maarten Tromp set sail with his flagship Brederode and 100 ships to break the blockade at Texel, where Vice Admiral Witte de With was trapped by the English with 27 ships. On August 8, the English sighted Tromp and sailed south so that De With could escape and join Tromp the next day before Scheveningen, near the small town of Ter Heijde. Tromp had brought his fleet north of the English fleet in a skilful manoeuvre. The English attacked the united Dutch fleet on the morning of August 10. In fierce battles, both fleets moved four times through the other. Tromp was killed at the beginning by a sniper sitting in the rigging of William Penn’s ship. His death was kept secret so as not to endanger the Dutch will to fight.
By late afternoon, twelve Dutch ships had sunk or been seriously damaged. Finally, Dutch morale was broken and many ships under the command of merchant captains fled north. De With tried to stop them, but had to cover the retreat to Texel himself.
But the English fleet was badly damaged itself, had many wounded on board and had to return home for repair. Both sides claimed victory for themselves: the English for their tactical superiority, the Dutch for the strategic goal of their attack.  Tromp’s death was a heavy blow for the Dutch, Johan de Witt was now ready to give Cromwell guarantees that William III of Orange would never become governor and that the Netherlands would never become a bastion of the Stuarts. Negotiations led to the peace of Westminster on 8 May 1654.

These are probably not your dream plans, but they are SO MUCH BETTER than what we have now.
If you can’t find anything on that list that you think is worth voting for, then I genuinely don’t believe you care more about people than you do about ideological purity, and that sucks.

Link
For the last two weeks, tens of thousands of Algerians have been protesting against the attempt of its 82-year-old president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, to run for a fifth term.
Bouteflika, who has been in power since 1999, last addressed his people in May 2012, a year after a series of Arab uprisings had toppled three long-term presidents in Algeria's neighbourhood. In that speech, he made it clear that he was ready to leave the presidency once his third term was up; Algerians still remember very well two statements he made: "My generation has passed its time" and "God bless the man who knows his limits".
At that time, Algeria was still enjoying unprecedented revenue flow, as oil prices were consistently hovering around $100 a barrel (having reached $140 in 2008). This had allowed the president to "buy" some social peace and contain the fallout from the Arab Spring.
In 2013, he suffered a debilitating stroke, which confined him to a wheelchair, causing many to think this would all-but-guarantee the long-term president's planned retirement from politics. In 2014, however, Bouteflika made an unexpected u-turn and announced his decision to run again.
The unravelling chaos in neighbouring Libya, as well as Syria, convinced a significant number of Algerian voters to opt for the stability offered by the incumbent president and Bouteflika managed to win a fourth term. The president tried to ease the concerns of voters who still wanted change by promising he would enact reforms that would result in his eventual "passing the torch to the younger generation".
Unfortunately, these reforms never materialised.
Bouteflika spent most of his fourth term in office between hospitals in Geneva, Switzerland, and Grenoble, France. He was obviously unable to run the country efficiently because of his rapidly deteriorating health. He offered little more than cosmetic solutions to the country's deep-rooted problems.
He failed to utilise the oil revenues to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the average Algerian. Today, oil prices have halved, corruption levels have reached unprecedented levels, social inequalities have increased, more than a quarter of Algerians under 30 are unemployed, and many are fed up with a president that seems unwilling or at least unable to keep his promises to the people.
This is why after the ailing president announced his intention to run for a fifth term, Algerians from all walks of life took to the streets. Lawyers, journalists, students and academics all voiced their opposition to a fifth Bouteflika mandate.
The authorities clearly miscalculated the effect such a move would have on the people and assumed that demonstrations would take place only in "suspect areas" like the Berber-dominated northern region of Kabylie or some of the restive eastern provinces. Instead, demonstrators marched in cities and towns across the country. Algiers, where protests were hitherto banned, saw the biggest gathering in the country.
Even the city of Tlemcen in western Algeria, where the majority of Bouteflika's ministers come from, joined the demonstrations. The Algerian diaspora in London, Paris and Montreal also organised similar marches.
Today, many Algerians believe that the ailing president is being used by people in his entourage. They feel that the image of their country, and indeed their long-term president, is being dragged through the mud by people who are not concerned about anything other than enriching themselves and consolidating their grip on the Algerian state.
They feel that some people in the president's inner circle are trying to use the respect Algerians have for him, given that he is credited for bringing peace to the country through national reconciliation, to pursue their own self-interests.
This is why the demonstrators' chants have evolved from "Degage!" (Get out) to "Al-shaab yureed isqat al-nidham!" (The people want the downfall of the regime).
Demonstrations have thus far been peaceful and the security services response has been exemplary. However, figures from both the military and the government cautioned people about what may happen if the demonstrations continue.
Ahmed Gaid Salah, the military's chief of staff and deputy defence minister, has warned that the ongoing protests may soon turn violent. Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, an ally of Bouteflika, also warned the Algerian people about the future, reminding that the war in Syria also began with similar protests.
However, Ouyahia and Salah's warnings fell on deaf ears, as the demonstrators and their supporters pointed out that the Algerians view not Syria, but Malaysia and Turkey as role models. They reminded the authorities that the first step in Malaysia's development was getting rid of corrupt individuals and insisted that Algerians have learned a lot from the experiences of the Arab Spring countries.
For now, the protesters appear to have the upper hand in Algeria. Bouteflika's entourage has already been forced to make some concessions. In a letter read out on state-run TV on Sunday, they announced that if the president is re-elected, he would set up an inclusive national conference that would set a date and prepare for new polls which he would not contest. They also invited the opposition and representatives of the protesters to negotiate a road map.
However, the move failed to appease Algerian protesters, who viewed the offer as yet another tactic to buy time. They felt that the president, who never kept his promise to step down in the past, is unlikely to be true to his world this time.
So, what is next for Algeria?
As the protests are unlikely to die down on their own, there appear to be four options.
The president may pass away. ِAccording to unconfirmed reports, President Bouteflika is in a critical condition in a hospital in Geneva. The president of the Council for Nation, the upper house in the parliament, would take over the presidency for a period of 60 days before presidential elections can take place. This would give the political establishment enough time to agree on a new candidate.
The second, less likely scenario would be for the president's entourage to withdraw his candidacy because of ill health. The implication would be the same as the first scenario.
A third scenario would be the military intervening to either cancel the president's candidacy on the grounds of his ill health, or announce that it is no longer going to support him in the presidential race. This would effectively mean that he would lose the election.
Finally, those who would benefit from Bouteflika winning a fifth term could try to turn the peaceful demonstrations into violent ones. The military and security forces would likely intervene, declaring a state of emergency, and the process of change would be aborted.

The 100 rewatch: 1x09 Unity Day
This episode was never one of my favorites, but I didn’t dislike it first time around, so I was surprised to which extent I did this time. It’s an important episode that moves the plot along in crucial ways both on the Ark and on the ground, but it has so many of the things I disliked in season 1 (the Jaha/Diana plot – which reaches its climax and ends with this episode, Finn the peacemaker, and the first appearance of Anya – always one of my least favorite characters, who starts the tradition of Grounders being extremely hypocritical in their interactions with the Arkers) or that I’m indifferent to (the very rushed Linctavia romance - the Romeo and Juliet “we just met and we’re already in love” type romance was never my thing, I just don’t find it relatable).
Rating: 6/10
The scenes I liked the best were just the little moments of the Delinquents having fun during the Unity Day celebration. And I don’t mean just the scene where Clarke and Bellamy spend a few minutes eye fucking flirting totally platonically interacting, but also Clarke having fun with a couple of random Delinquents (Fox and Sterling, who are both introduced here) and the start of Jasper’s and Raven’s friendship and him telling her that she now kind of has a family with the Delinquents. And I liked Miller’s snarky remark while watching Jaha’s speech, that he can now try to take credit after the 100 have done the toughest job.
This was the first time we got the backstory of the 12 stations joining, and the unofficial fact that the 13th station was blown up, which the show explored more in S3.
It’s also the first time we hear the “…May we meet again” prayer for the dying, when Kane says it to his mother.
At least the Diana/Jaha conflict is finally over. This is how not to do moral greyness: instead of having sympathy for both sides, I disliked both sides equally, which results in indifference. Diana’s political stance is supposed to be about protecting the working class, but it’s kinda hard to trust that when all her people did in the previous episodes was manipulate one member of the Ark’s working class to do their dirty job and assassinate Jaha and then another one to try to kill the former one. And here they stage a terrorist attack and fail to kill Jaha, again (this guy survived probably more near-deaths during the show than anyone else), but blow up a bunch of innocent people, including children.  And on the other side you have Jaha, with all his oppression, executions and constant lies. But I guess this show loves the “people being total a-holes and destroying everything” plots, like this one.
Something that I always disliked but couldn't put my finger on why, but now I know: Finn’s new role as a peacemaker is just Finn doing Finn things again: he is saying so many things that sound right (peace, we should all get along, stop the cycle of violence etc.) but the way he goes about it is so frustrating and stupid, it’s basically “How not to do pacifism”.
First, he goes to talk to Lincoln on his own and suggests negotiations – nice, but Lincoln tells him straight up that he has no power to negotiate a truce, and Finn is like “Find someone who can”. What makes him think any of the Grounder leaders will listen to Lincoln? He knows nothing about the Grounder society, so it’s dumb to assume they don’t have a strict hierarchy and act the same as an informal group like the 100. He assumes the thing is already as good as agreed on and that everyone will do exactly as he wants them to, including the Grounders not bringing any weapons, because he said so. Then he tells that to Clarke alone – Lincoln identified her as the leader of the 100; I wonder what Finn would’ve done if Lincoln had thought Bellamy was the leader – and brings it all to her as a done deal, telling her to do as he says, insisting that there should be no weapons, and silencing any arguments to the contrary.
First off, this is really stupid: there’s nothing unusual about bringing guards to peace negotiations, in fact, I’m pretty sure that’s what leaders always do – and of course the Grounders are going to bring armed guards and backup to the meeting. This shouldn’t have been a surprise. Secondly, how presumptuous is he? Now that I’ve seen S2, everything Finn does looks like an attempt to be a hero and to prove himself as a hero to Clarke specifically and to have her need him, like Raven did on the Ark.
Clarke, on her part, obviously thinks to herself – the same as she later does during the conversation with Anya – “there’s no use arguing with someone so unreasonable”, and you can see her starting to learn to be sneaky to get things done. So she goes to Bellamy for armed backup, of course. Later, Finn is surprised that, oh look, the Grounder “leader” is coming with armed guards (duh) and is clearly upset when Anya tells Clarke to come to talk to her on the middle of the bridge by herself, not letting Finn come with her. He lost the opportunity to be her knight protector. How do you think you can protect her, Finn, when you didn’t bring any weapons? In fact, not only does Anya come with armed guards, but she has a knife herself, and archers hidden in the trees nearby, including one ready to shoot Clarke any moment.
Bellamy made a mistake bringing Jasper, the guy who was speared by the Grounders – but having seen S2 and S3, it’s clear that even Abby has no clue about PTSD, so it’s not surprise that Bellamy didn’t. Though he seemed to have learned by S4, when he acted very differently with Riley. Jasper’s PTSD certainly was partly responsible for the way he jumped to the conclusion that the Grounders were going to kill Clarke. I don’t think they were intending to – or they would have done it immediately – but the archer was clearly there to shoot any moment she does anything suspicious, so her life was in danger for sure – it could’ve easily ended up as one of those “I thought he was reaching for a gun” situations.
I love the way Clarke and Bellamy just looked at each other and rolled their eyes at Finn when he started blaming Clarke for bringing up backup and said “All you had to do it trust me”. Geez, Finn, not everything is about your relationship with Clarke. And this didn’t even make sense – she could trust him but still think he was being dumb, he could not vouch for the Grounders, and he was wrong in his expectation they would do what he told them to and come without weapons.
I’ve always found Anya really annoying, and with the info we find out later, it’s even worse, because it’s obvious that everything that came out of her mouth during that meeting was utter BS. I had forgotten that she actually told Clarke: “You’ve started a war you don’t know how to finish”. Really?
Tumblr media
Not the last time the Grounders will blame the Arkers for the things they did themselves, or for defending themselves against them. Even more annoying is the fact that some fans take the “you started a war by destroying our village” argument seriously, in spite of the facts that Grounders speared Jasper way before that and engaged in intimidation tactics, that they must have known exactly what the 100 were like for quite some time since 1) at least one person, Lincoln, followed them and noted info about them, and 2) we learn in 1x10 that they had captured and tortured Murphy and that he told them everything. And you have to be extremely stupid to conclude that 100 unarmed kids going around having fun are an invading force, or that their first action would be to blow up a random village, rather than find out more about the Grounders, target their leadership, do anything strategically important. Lexa was not stupid, so I think that she was probably thinking along the same lines as Bellamy was in 1x04 when the crowd was lynching Muprhy – “give people what they want”. People want to blame someone, they want blood for blood, so let’s give them an enemy.
Anya’s other arguments are even worse:  the Delinquents also supposedly started the war because “you captured and tortured one of ours” – forgetting that they did it right after the Grounders had killed 3 of the Delinquents and were just about to attack and killed more when the fake signal for the acid fog interrupted them. She says she has no reason to make a deal that Clarke cannot guarantee the Ark leadership would observe. True – but we now know that Anya is not the actual leader of the Grounders or even Trikru, so she has no authority to do guarantee the rest would listen, either. The deal was negotiated over a few hours, so I doubt they could have consulted Lexa in Polis (and it’s questionable if even Lexa could guarantee anything, since the clans were not united, and Trikru were at war with the Ice Nation so much of the time).
And her reply to Clarke’s warning that the soldiers from the Ark would come to destroy them with their technology, “They wouldn’t be the first to try”, seems like empty bragging. That has to be about the Mountain Men, but they never actually tried to destroy the Grounders. Why would they destroy their continuous blood supply? They just wanted to enslave and harvest them, and it doesn’t seem like the Grounders were ever able to do much about it.
Body count: a ton of people from the Ark, but I don’t know the numbers. Dozens of people in the terrorist attack, including Kane’s mother and the cute girl who was giving the speech. Then everyone on the Exodus ship, including Diana, when it crashes – which we now know was caused by Mount Weather. The Mountain Men killed so many Arkers in S1, before they even appeared on screen. (They said before that the Exodus ship can take up to 700 people, so I guess it must have been around that number, or at least a few hundred people?) And Diana’s actions crippled the Ark and it lost power, so she’s responsible for the imminent deaths of a lot of people who remained on the Ark. On the ground, Jasper shot 2 Grounders, but I don’t know if they died.

Ineffective Moves to Combat Head Injuries
In response to growing backlash to better protect players from head injuries, the NFL has recently made moves to better identify and treat players with concussions in-game. If a player displays concussion symptoms during a game, it is now mandatory that he be removed from the game and evaluated for a concussion. If teams fail to do so, they are subject to fines (Wolpert 2019:10). But, this protocol is not good enough to properly address concussions and the punishment for teams for failing to comply isn’t severe enough. Neuroscientists have long outlined more proper guidelines for teams to use, in which a player that has sustained two or three concussions is sidelined for the rest of the season. The NFL does not implement these guidelines, while simultaneously failing to provide players with the required, correct information about concussions (Wolpert 2019:10). Players today still do not fully understand concussions, their symptoms, and the importance of reporting them. This is, in part, due to the NFL’s four-decade long denial of being aware of, or should’ve been aware of, any causal link between on-field concussions and later-life cognitive abilities. It wasn’t until 2016 when the NFL finally admitted there was a link between repeated brain trauma and CTE. Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, stated that players do not believe there is a link, while claiming that he believes that it is “absurd” to claim that there is one (Wolpert 2019:11). A 2016 New York Times investigation found the NFL’s Head, Neck, and Spine Committee, a supposedly independent, unbiased group, was comprised mostly of members with connections to an NFL franchise. The NFL created a committee under the guise of having the players’ best interest, which was actually biased and falsely claiming that there was no link between concussions and CTE (Wolpert 2019:12).
Tumblr media
(NFL injury tent, used to evaluate injuries such as concussions)
In order to truly solve the issues that currently exist, which allow for an environment that fails to protect NFL players from head trauma and diseases like CTE, there must be far more protections in the next iteration of the CBA. One possible idea is banning team spotters from overruling team doctors’ opinions, given team doctors have an incentive to put the players back in the game as soon as possible. Another would be addressing the tactics used by players to play with a potential concussion. With the risk of being unable to play looming over their heads, resulting in not making money and being seen as a possible liability going forward (making them being signed by a team for a new contract less likely), players have been rumored to purposely score low on preseason baseline cognitive assessment tests. Thus, it is easier for them to pass a concussion evaluation during a game (Wolpert 2019:13). There must be a new CBA provision where players cannot return to a game until cleared by a third-party, licensed professional trained in concussion evaluation and management.
Another move would be to make NFL contracts fully guaranteed, where players will receive 100% of the money in the deal, regardless of their health status. Current contracts are not fully guaranteed and incentivize players to play through injury, in order to make all of the potential money from their contract and to ensure job security. A Harvard study found that only 44% of the money that was contracted was in the form of guarantee. By fully guaranteeing contracts, players will begin putting their health first (Wolpert 2019:14). And given the NFL is a multi-billion industry, fully guaranteeing contracts should not be a financial challenge for teams. Lastly, all players must be provided lifetime healthcare (Wolpert 2019:16). During the 2011 CBA negotiations, NFL Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson estimated that the total cost to provide every Hall of Famer health insurance would cost the NFL less than $4 million, which is less than the cost of a 30 second Super Bowl ad, or about 3 cents for every $100 the league generates in revenue (Wolpert 2019:16).
The NFL has shown that it will alter and add rules following public outcry. If there is going to be real, massive change, players and fans must call and fight for it. As long as they continue buying tickets, merchandise, and fueling this lucrative industry, change will not happen and the wellbeing of players will not be properly protected. The NFL promotes a sport that is inherently linked with brain trauma, which causes CTE and other cognitive diseases later in life for former players. Rather than properly protect those players, the league has ignored the link, incentivized unhealthy practices, misinformed players about their health, and failed to take care of former players. Only making minor concessions and rule changes in recent years, the league still fails to protect current and former players. To provide the necessary protections, fans and players must collectively call for change in the next iteration of the NFL’s CBA.
