- itafushi: literally my number one ship ever. they make me so fucking emo. the tragedy of what couldn’t have been prevented. i pray for itafushi moments in the jjk manga but every time it happens it is somehow worse than the last. peace 🙏

- yutamaki: they mean so much to me. i love them both platonically and romantically! their moments in jjk0 are super sweet and i love that they’re always supporting each other 🥹

- satosugu: this is a ship i’ll put in a blender. i don’t usually think of them but when i do i want to throw up blood. they’re the cause of all my problems. i love them. they are so my tears ricochet core

- kunichuuzai: i’m cheating here because i love all individual pairings in this ship AND the poly ship. especially kunichuu which crept up on me and slapped me in the face. chuuya being downbad for kunikida is GREAT. they are so good when you dont have toxic shippers breathing in your ear about how one is better than the other ❤️

- tachigin: do u ever think about how they’re both liars. how they both have a hidden identity. how they both found family within the mafia not as the person they really are, but as the person they pretended to be. how the betrayal felt like when tachihara dropped his mask. OUGH

Itafushi (Jujutsu Kaisen)

It's my number 1 right now, like i love them so much! Their ship is really cute and i love the contrast between them and how they work so well together as friends and more! I'm always giggling and shit when i think about them even if they're doomed by the narrative :(

Zolu (One Piece Live Action/Animanga)

I really liked their dynamic after watching the live action so i mainly ship opla! zolu, but any content of this ship is cute and catches my interest! This ship literally made me write fanfics again lol More Zolu please!

Miyusawa/Misawa (Ace of Diamond)

Miyusawa my beloved ❤️ The first time i watched this anime it had been an instant ship, their chemistry is amazing, the pitcher/catcher dynamic is chef's kiss and just the development of their relationship throughout the show was the highlight for me! I watched everything again recently and i still love this ship very much, fave fave fave :')

They are everything honestly! The angst of it all and their beautiful relationship is just aaaah and the show is INCREDIBLE?? Whether it's friendship or more, they love each other so much. In my head they're canon, i mean after what Lu Guang did, for me that's just proof of his love for Cheng Xiaoshi... they make me ill

Renga (Sk8 the Infinity)

Sk8 was the anime of the season when it came out, the serotonin was just high with this one, especially during covid time. Reki and Langa's friendship was the cutest thing to watch and it was so genuine and then ep 7 happened and the ship just sailed really hard for me! So many cute moments while a beautiful relationship blossomed in front of our eyes!! Love!!

Kazurei (Buddy Daddies)

A new favorite from last year! The premise of the show was so engaging to me when it first came out and even though i knew Kazuki and Rei weren't going to be canon, we were still fed so well? Like Queerplatonic, same-sex parentality, friends to lovers trope??? we got everything and more, especially last episode like omg they're canon idc!!

Dreamling (The Sandman)

Fell in love with this ship instantly with just one episode and little content... the fandom got my back though, i was well fed and shipped them even harder thanks to all the fanarts and fanfics! i want season 2 right now and more of them!!

EmiSue (Dickinson TV)

Not my first wlw ship but definitely my favorite! From the first episode i knew they were soulmates and i wanted more of them together! The show gave us everything we wanted and i'm glad i got to witness it :)

Satosugu (Jujutsu Kaisen)

They're not Itafushi but they are Itafushi in some ways?? like parallels we can't ignore. It's a big ship in the fandom but i'm not as invested as many stsg shippers are, though i really like the ship, i read fanfics about them and i love their story in the first part of season 2! So much angst though...

Nobamaki (Jujutsu Kaisen)

I love them together, i think their ship is cute and has a lot of potential! I don't obssess with them enough and i should read more fanfics, but they're amazing so they stay at the top of my list!

It's me. Hi. I'm asking about the son of hephaestus!Reki post. It's me.

you ask this as if you dont know about my mad descent back into greek mythology brainrot. But ANYWAY

Reki is a basic choice - building, crafting, creative. Baby boy builds shit from his own two hands, mostly based on experimenting. We see it, he makes his own calculations and tried new and unconventional things, which is giving Hephaestus. Also, there's that imposter syndrome of his or inferiority complex which, while not being a tradition Hephaestus Trait(tm), just gives me Hepheastus vibes. Like this god is essentially the outcast of the Olympians, he got yeeted by his mother off a mountain, is rejected constantly and is just. yeah. Except for Reki it's all in his head because he isn't actually rejected.

Langa is uuuhhhh...... Self indulgent. I wanted Renga to be what Aphrodite and Hephaestus could never be. But also. Dite is beauty and love (and sexuality but whatever). Langa is admired by all (canonically) and is FUCKING PRETTY GODDAMNIT. And I think Langa is a good characterization of Love. And not just person love. Like yes, he loves his friends, he's in love with Reki, but he represents love of an activity, especially once with Reki. Which goes back to what Dite and Hephaestus could never be. Langa, alone, feels nothing. Love, alone, is nothing. Love has to have an object, and Langa's love of skating (and Reki) kinda represents that. Langa's love of sports has a person object. Snowboarding = Oliver. Skating = Reki. And what is Dite? She is love. Langa loves.

Also. Langa is idolized by everyone, something that's heavily associated with Dite. Because of her beauty (because of Langa's beauty on a board), she is idolized and a lot are jealous of her (*cough* Trojan War *cough*). What is Reki? Jealous of Langa because he surpassed him. So Langa being a Dite kid just makes sense. Also he could probably get away with anything he wants if he put in the effort.

And before someone goes BUT APHRODITE IS SEX I think it would be funny for a Dite kid to be asexual. It's just a bit ol' fuck you to the stereotype of Dite kid = sex.

And the others will be analyzed some other time because I'm sleeby again

well uhhh uhhh i did not meet a single one of my december goals. so that's....not great! i had really hoped to finish my ya sci-fi book rewrites by end of the year but alas, i still have 9 chapters left *sob* (i thought i only had 7 but recently realized i need to add two more chapters. cool. cool cool cool coolcoolcool.) but it's fine!! it's fine!!! i rewrote about 14k of my book in december and i'm finally entering the final arc so AAAAA. IT'S HAPPENING.

that is still gonna be my main priority for january (rewriting my book, that is). i'm hoping i will FINALLY finish but then again i've said that for like the last six months so we'll see lmfao. and if i DO finish rewrites, hoping i can delve into line edits woooo!!!

i'm hoping to also start doing a bit of querying prep this month (*screams internally*) by which i mean i just wanna at least start refining my query package—i technically have one already that i used to apply to mentorships and whatnot, but it's badly outdated now so uhh need to fix that! i had told myself i'd start querying by end of this month (even if it's just like, sending out One Query for the heck of it). not feeling like that's very likely but... who knows!

but also....i've been so burnt out on my book lately, i really just wanna write at least SOME fanfic this month. i want to write things for fun again, i miss it. :(

*scratches head* well uhhh damn i did not really...do anything i wanted to get done this year.... LMFAO. and even the few things i checked off are things i like barely worked on/started. so, ouch 😅

in my defense... i did not foresee how much work i'd have to do with my book revisions this year. at the beginning of the year i thought i was going into line edits—but around april i realized i needed to do a full rewrite. so i essentially had to start over, and rewrote *checks notes* roughly 83k of it so!! as you can imagine...that was rather time consuming and i did not have much time to work on anything else.

but... i'm trying to look on the bright side: the reason i started over is because of how much i've learned about writing from my mentors and my critique group etc. and looking at my draft from last year vs. this year, i can see a huge improvement! there is still a lot of work to do on this book—but i do feel like in 2023, i fell more in love with the story and characters than ever before (like to the point where i essentially have brain rot for my own ocs... LOL). and i feel like after 2.5 years of hard work, i am starting to see the "real book" starting to emerge from the chaotic mess it was before. so, that's very exciting!!

which brings me to: i'm hoping to maybe....MAYBE...dip my feet into the querying trenches in 2024. i had kinda hoped to do this by end of 2023 but...once again i grossly overestimated how ready my book was at the beginning of the year lololol. but i do feel like once i finish this big rewrite, i'll have less structural/overarching things to fix and more scene-level and line-level edits which (fingers crossed) hopefully will not be quite as involved as, yaknow, rewriting my entire book word by word! SOOO i may be sorta sending out the occasional query as i work on line edit-y stuff (esp bc querying is so slow nowadays haha) so yeahhh haha *sweats profusely*

there are a few other original projects i hope to make progress on this year. firstly, i'd love to continue working on my first draft of my adult fantasy arctic monster wip (maybe...finish a draft? i kinda doubt it but maybe!!). i also hope to keep working on planning a couple other projects, including planning sapphic princess/pirate wip and space western dads wip—both of which i'm very excited about. :)

AAAAND I WANT TO WRITE FIC AGAIN!!!! i really neglected my fic writing in 2023 and i miss it terribly. 😭 i have a lot of wips i want to continue/finish—but i think main priorities will be editing/publishing the last chapter of sylvix dreamscape fic, trying to finish posting at least one of my other ongoing multichapter fics, working more on sylvix pacrim au, aaaand... finishing a draft of one of my other wips perhaps? i don't know, i'm trying to be gentler with myself since i think i had too many specific goals for 2023 and could not meet any of them haha. sooo re: fic writing the general goal is "just have fun and see what happens."

Skate Tricks {Renga}

A/N: I decided to combine these two because I thought they’d fit well together, hope you don’t mind! also reki has a squishy tummy because that one anon put it in my brain and it’s canon now. I hope you enjoy this one!

Summary: Reki is performing a bunch of super cool tricks on his skateboard, but Langa seems too occupied with his phone to notice.

Word Count: 1k (under the cut)

Reki jumped on his skateboard, kicking off the end and performing a successful ollie. He cheered and looked over at Langa.

“Did you see that?!”

Langa looked up from his phone, shaking his head. Reki frowned, still skating as he ran into one of the blocks of concrete unknowingly, falling forward with a shriek as Langa laughed from the side.

“Now that I saw,” he chuckled, Reki standing up and pouting at Langa before trotting over with his board, leaning on it as he stood next to Langa as he rocked back and forth on his heel.

“You better watch this one, I’m gonna go in the bowl.”

Langa nodded and Reki jumped on his board, skating over to the bowl, dipping in and skating in a few figure eights before building up some more speed, jumping up over the edge and gripping the side of his board, trying to imitate Langa’s style, which was more similar to snowboarding, before diving back into the bowl, skating around a little more before popping back up, grabbing his board as he looked cheerily at Langa.

Langa, however, was still staring intently at his phone and Reki pouted. He walked over to Langa, puffing his cheeks angrily.

“Put the phone down and pay attention to me!” He whined, and Langa grinned. He set the phone in his pocket, scooting over a little bit and patting the spot next to him for Reki to sit down on. He did so, crossing his arms and huffing in faux anger as Langa chuckled.

“Come on Reki, turn that frown upside down,” He teased, and Reki only folded his arms tighter and turned away from Langa with a huff. They both knew he was joking, it was very difficult for Reki to genuinely be upset. So when Langa started to creep his hands up his sides, Reki was surprised as a yelp escaped his lips.

“L-Langa?!” Reki gasped suddenly, trying to hold in his laughter.

“I thought you wanted some attention, so I’m giving it to you!” Langa chirped as Reki squeaked, the Canadian’s nimble fingers making quick work of Reki’s squishy sides, pinching easily at the sensitive spot through his shirt as Reki flailed, shoving at Langa’s shoulders as he tried to wriggle away.

“D-Don’t! Wahait, not there!” He gasped out when Langa travelled up to his ribs, poking and prodding as Reki squirmed, the temptation to run away growing as his closest friend got closer and closer to his underarms, Reki quickly clamping his arms down to try and keep him from reaching there as his face went red from holding in his laughter.

“Why are you holding back? Laugh!” Langa teased, drumming along Reki’s ribs with ease. He shook his head, though a small giggle escaped as Langa cooed. “I think you’re gonna laugh soon~”

Reki shrieked suddenly when Langa changed tactics and went after his tummy, pinching at the pudgy flesh as Reki threw his head back, his laughter finally breaking through.

“Lahahahanga! Not my tuhuhuhummy!” He whined, swatting at Langa’s hands uselessly as the blue-haired boy chuckled, prodding at the squish on Reki’s tummy.

“I love seeing you laugh~” Langa cooed, grabbing Reki’s hips and kneading them gently as Reki squealed, falling back on the bench they sat on as Langa followed him, leaning over his friend as Reki’s face went pink from embarrassment and laughter, his hysterics filling up the air around them.

“L-Langa! People will seeheehee!” He whined, and Langa looked around to see that, indeed, there were some passersby staring at the two of them as Reki squealed and squawked loudly. Langa rolled his eyes and kept up the work on Reki’s hips, pinching the soft flesh above them as Reki wailed, flopping underneath Langa like a fish out of water.

“Who cares if people see?” Langa said nonchalantly, seemingly unbothered by the people giving them odd looks or eye rolls. Reki whined, clearly more than a bit embarrassed, most likely because he was on the receiving end.

Langa dug his hands under Reki’s arms, Reki immediately clamping his arms down as he shrieked, squirming from side to side as he threw his head back, wheezing. Langa chuckled at Reki, amused by his frantic and hysterical reactions to his pretty lax touches. Reki’s face was bright red as his eyes filled with tears of mirth as he arched his back, squealing.

“Chahahahange spots! Plehehehease!” He wailed, and Langa hummed.

“You want me to change spots? Alright then~”

Langa slipped his hands under Reki’s shirt, making him gasp as Langa’s colder hands suddenly touched the warm skin of his tummy. Langa hummed as he made quick work of Reki’s tummy, squishing the pudge with ease as Reki lost it, the temperature of Langa’s cold hands against his soft, plush tummy made him squeal hysterically as he tried to suck in as he squirmed, Langa’s hands following him easily.

“Not thehehehere!”

“But Reki, you just asked me to change spots!” Langa teased, pinching his lower tummy as Reki wheezed, squirming like a worm as Langa laughed with him.

“No mohohohohohore! Plehehehease!” Reki gasped out, and Langa hummed, figuring his friend had had enough and relented.

He pulled his hands off of Reki as he wheezed, immediately grabbing his tummy to protect himself from any further attacks from Langa. Langa only chuckled, sitting up and giving his friend a little bit of space as he sat up as well, still wheezing.

“Th-That was evil,” Reki said after a few moments and Langa shrugged. He poked Reki’s ribs a few times as he squeaked, now covering his ribs as well as he glared at Langa, the huge grin on his face completely giving him away.

Langa wrapped an arm around Reki’s shoulder, the red-head flinching slightly for fear of another tickle attack, but Langa just looked over at the sunset, humming. Reki looked at it as well, leaning into Langa’s shoulder before closing his eyes, sighing contently. 

He shrieked suddenly when Langa’s hands were back on his tummy, squishing his tummy again as he threw his head back, swatting at Langa’s hands.

“Langahahaha!”

“Reki!” Langa teased, making him squeal as he continued to prod at his tummy, Reki laughing his heart out as Langa laughed with him.

- they both are kind of touchy-feely because they’re crushing mad hard and since they’re idiots they both just wonder if it’s the culture difference. maybe in canada it’s normal to brush your hands together all the time and pet your bestie’s head and maybe in japan it’s normal to play with your friend’s hair and cradle their face

- while reki has more of them on his phone than langa, both boys look through their photos and videos of them together frequently when they’re pining harder than usual. there are plenty related to skating, but they also just take pictures of each other when they do things like going out to eat, burger in one hand and doing a peace sign with the other

- the rest of the crew as well as langa’s mom and reki’s mom and sisters know that both of them are in love and tease them about it, more subtly when they’re both present with the exception of miya being miya. they’ve been referred to as lovebirds far more than once

- langa isn’t super talkative of course, but when he starts complimenting reki the redhead has to physically make him be quiet out of embarrassment. langa loves telling reki how important he is and reki admittedly loves hearing it because it’s langa (which is pretty much canon anyway)

Peeling his eyes open, Langa notices that the star’s gone from the sky. Hopefully the star heard him on its way to its destination. Maybe it’ll relay his wish and phone a friend, and maybe his wish really will come true.

Langa unclasps his hands, hangs them at his sides in fists, and takes a deep breath. Cramming his eyes closed, he screams at the top of his lungs, “I really, really want Reki to like me back!”

I asked for ships over at twitter and a friend gave me renga and I like how these turned out so here they are whee. questions from here

who wakes up first in the morning

oh absolutely neither. They do the sleepover thing pretty often, but their moms always put a limit on only the weekends, with the occasional week day, and it’s also usually at Reki’s house but when they do get home on Friday nights after S they sleep till like ten am on Saturday because they are exhausted and tired. And even when one or the other wakes up they don’t get up immediately because just lazing around in bed and cuddling is too nice to give it up right away.

who’s the first to fall asleep at night

well, Langa canonically falls asleep in 3 seconds flat, while Reki always has too much energy stored unless he’s posted a very exhausting beef or he has been practicing a trick for hours prior. If they were just skating and doing only some tricks he is still buzzing even when Langa is just zoning out already, nose buried in Reki’s shoulder

what they playfully tease each other over

Oh absolutely about everything, from their music and fashion choices, childhoods, food preferences, silly sleeping faces or the strange noises they make when they bail or how bad their writing is. It’s all in good nature and just part of their conversations.

what they do when the other’s having a bad day

Ask what’s wrong. They don’t take chances anymore and try to be as open as they can about their feelings. Langa forces himself to pay more attention to Reki’s moods (which honestly isn’t that much of an effort, he realizes, he always pays attention to Reki) and when Reki says what has been bothering him, he offers to do something nice for him, like buy him ice cream or something sweet and but also usually asks what he can do to make it better. Sometimes it’s just listening to Reki rant and sometimes it’s something more specific.

When Langa misses his dad and he gets all gloomy (gloomier than usually) Reki just knows already. So, there’s skating but if grief weights on him too much, he will just crawl into Reki’s arms, curl his long limbs around him and put his head on Reki’s chest and listen to his heartbeat.

Sometimes he will talk about his dad or snowboarding or Canada and Reki will listen for as long as Langa needs it.

how they say ‘i’m sorry’ after arguments

they actually say I am sorry XD

and yep you guessed it, they skate. Maybe kiss later on too, who knows.

which one’s more ticklish

they both are but in different places. Reki is ticklish on his sides so Langa has to be very careful not to ruin the mood then they are um well. doing things. And he accidentally makes his touch too light.

For Langa those are armpits and back of his knees.

They both have tickled each other mercilessly though because how could they not

aside from watching skating videos and movies and video games it’s sleeping. I can’t stress it enough how sleep deprived these two seem to be, and their favorite thing to do together is to curl up around each other and just sleep and sleep and sleep.

how they surprise each other

well, they are always and constantly in awe of each other when it comes to skating so I feel like they never would stop being surprised by how much the other loves the sport and how great the other is at what they’re doing.

For more casual things, Langa cooks for Reki as often as he can and he learns more traditional dishes from his mom and Reki always makes sure Langa’s board is updates to fit his needs and he also likes drawing things for him from time to time.

their most sickening shows of public affection

aside from the longing and sickening looks? Lots of skinship. Both the platonic at first but then also the little less platonic. I mean they don’t…go too farm but there’s just so much hand holding and casual waist touching and arm and hair brushing and checking if the other is okay and ugh get a roooom.

How helpful Reki truly is

After re-watching the show for the billionth time, because I’m simply put it; not over this show. (Pleasseee.. let there be a season 2)

I noticed just how helpful my baby, Reki is: (aka a simple and stupid way to show my absolute love and adoration for this human bean)

Gooddd!! I lovvee him!! (Also this moment, *chef’s kiss*. Langa trust me, he’s not only your happiness)

Anyway, back to the point

Obviously, he’s really kind and helpful in general (helping Langa to skate, building an impressive as heck board, helping Miya understand the beauty of skating and friendship, single-handedly caused Langa and Kaoru to burst out in laughter, bringing the group together and sooo much more)

But I’m specifically talking about every single beef Langa had and how he helped in simple ways:

Langa vs Shadow: Here it isn’t that blatant, but Reki forgetting the board inevitably caused Langa to skate for the first time (also the board he used was made by Reki)

Langa vs MIYA: Building that insane board literally from his own merit, but not only that, during the warehouse portion of the race, we see Langa who has no idea on how to do a trick since he doesn’t have an entrance length, then it shows Reki who says something to Langa, after which he slides on the railing

Langa vs ADAM (1): Convincing Cherry and in-turn JOE to help figure out the LOVE HUG (at the cost of his own skating skills. I mean Kaoru, I love you, but why you gotta bring my baby down)

Langa vs JOE: Just this

Langa vs ADAM (2): Duudee, he was literally falling to his death and saw the skateboard, remembered how cute Reki is and decided, “Nope, not ready to die yet, I have to go on a date with him”

short answer: yeah

long answer: i agree with people that it felt very rushed, there would have been enough time to resolve most major plot points, but for some reason they chose to focus more on ✨the power of friendship✨ and having fun while skating. not to say that’s a bad thing, but if you wanted adam to get a redemption arc, you would have to actually set up an arc and not drop this on us last minute. the treatment of kiriko (and tadashi) felt off because in the end they didn’t really matter?? which is sad because they could have been great characters. for the me the most unsatisfying thing is def that the whole adam thing was just resolved poorly. we didn’t get an adam redemption arc, which i wouldn’t have wanted in the first place just because they spend 12 episodes telling us how bad he is, but we also didn’t see him deal with any consequences for his actions. he’s just still kind of there. is he still evil? is he still after langa? we didn’t even see his reaction to losing to langa the way i was hoping to. there’s definitely a lot to unpack and there would be enough to make a season 2/ova/movie but hey, we don’t know that yet. and please what happened to the guy that hit shadow over the head???? pls studio bones where did he end up

on the positive side: renga canon!!! beautiful, we got a hug and them being each other’s definition of happiness and gay love saving langa’s life wow what a treat

enjoy some miya chinen head-canons because i'm bored and hoping for season two.

i. miya was the first one reki came out to, and became renga's number one matchmaker. when they started dating, he threw a party, to "mourn the deaths of langa's fangirls".

ii. sometimes, when he's upset, miya will go to joe's restaurant and just ... sit. no talking, no eating, just watching the people walk by, lost in his thoughts. at first, joe was confused, but eventually he got used to it - he even designated the table closest to the window, the one right in the corner, just for miya.

iii. his hoodie was a birthday gift from his old skateboarding best friend, before they fell out, and, despite everything, miya couldn't bring himself to chuck it away.

iv. he's best friends with reki's sister, koyomi. they had seen each other at school a few times, but it wasn't until reki introduced them when miya came over one time that they truly talked. their favourite bonding activities include annoying reki, teasing reki, bullying reki, and annoying reki some more.

v. langa and miya watch rupauls drag race together. sometimes cherry joins in. they're all sworn to secrecy.

vi. him and reki are the memers of the group. every now and then, when reki would go to chuck out a broken board, miya would stop him, asking if you could have the board "for reasons". he would then be witnessed later in the day, shouting into his phone "so no head?", before jumping on the board and breaking it, much to the confusion of the unfortunate bystanders. cherry hates it, joe finds it hilarious, and langa was just confused.

just gives me the funniest mental image of Renga. Like, we know they aren't perfect, they're prone to fights. And I tend to write Langa little more emotional than he is in canon because I can and emotions are good. And I also write him with butterfingers, soooooo

It's a stupid argument, but Langa was on his phone when it started and he didn't put it down. Things escalate, they're yelling at each other. Which has Langa accidentally throwing his phone at Reki in a gesturing fit. Which of course has Reki yelling "What the fuck, man? Did you just throw your phone at me?" and Langa, who's still high on his anger, doesn't apologize or even say that he didn't mean to. And before things really get out of hand, Reki stomps off, locking himself in his room

Come the next morning, Langa has had time to digest his emotions, so he's gently knocking on Reki's door to finally apologize. They need to talk about their fight, not do like the last time they fought, not let unsaid words get in the way. And he's been told by his mother that you have to talk your problems through, not ignore them. Anyway, it takes a moment for Reki to open the door but when he does, Langa snorts because he's got a helmet on. "What the fuck are you wearing?" "I don't trust your butterfingers, man. That phone to the head hurt like hell. Not letting you get me like that again." And they both end up laughing at each other and apologizing and admitting that it was stupid to let things get so heated. And they make things better, they don't walk away from one another. They communicate, because that's what they need.

I’m usually never disappointed in anything I’ve seen from studio bones because I know the teams that work on their shows work extremely hard to do what they can. This anime has a lot of History to it too, the director of free and banana fish? Gorgeous animation and designs? Hilarity? A banger of an OP AND ED? Honestly Sk8 the Infinity was just a Good Time.

Our story follows Reki, a high schooler in Okinawa who is OBSESSED with skateboarding, and the new Canadian transfer student, Langa, becoming friends because of skating. Reki takes Langa to the underground skateboard scene S, where Langa, after being taken away from snowboarding in Canada, is introduced to skating in such a way, it makes him want to keep going and get better.

S is also filled with lots of interesting side characters, like Joe, Cherry, Shadow, and yes, even Adam. These people looked at skateboarding and were like “but what if it was like WWE?” Anyway…

While it’s not the strongest in the story department (looking at you failed political subplot!), in the character, animation, and comedy department? Just, great marks all around. Sk8 is RIDICULOUS with some of the nonsense it pulls, but it pulls it in a way that makes sense in context, and never lets you rest from it. The scenes outside of S are also just really fun, funny and wholesome. I just love the character interactions and chemistry.

Am I mad that certain things didn’t happen? Eh, not really honestly. It did the best it could in it’s very limited 12 episode run-time, but honestly, if this went longer than 12 episodes? It might’ve gotten into some trouble. Sometimes, short, sweet, and open ended is good. Would I say no to more Sk8? No???? Except season two and onward of Free just....(this I think is more a fault with the writer than the director. I’m mad with ALL of the character development they ruined in Free season two, I’m sorry). I think Sk8 would greatly benefit from a movie or some OVAs that aren’t recap, but I think it’s charm might be lost if they put more weight into a more serious plot. In general, I think a lot of the problems with the story were when they leaned too heavily on serious plot. The misunderstanding/jealousy subplot was okay, but it dragged on for sooooo many episodes.

Another thing I don’t think enough people talk about is I LOVE the setting for this anime. Very few anime get set outside of Tokyo, and Okinawa is such a melting pot of culture! It makes for a great background, very colorful and enjoyable. It reminds me a lot of tsuritama (which hey, if you want another wholesome sports anime with "friendship", watch it) even though I'm pretty sure it was set in Enoshima which is an island neeeeaarr….Shikoku? Not in the Okinawa region. Plus all of it’s love given to the actual theme of the show, skating. As someone who used to play the Tony Hawk N64 game a LOT as a kid (but the only time I “skateboarded” I ran over my thumb with my full body weight ouchie!), it just felt fun seeing the way S was set up and all the cool ass moves people pulled.

And I think the two main things people have been arguing about a lot was the whole iS ReNgA cAnOn?! And SEND ADAM TO JAIL-- I like that they queercoded a lot and left it up to interpretation. I’m sure they had studio and network heads breathing down their necks to not be explicit, but there is nary a heterosexual explanation for anything. And ya I wanted to see Adam in handcuffs in not the sexy way. I’m not like 100% mad what they did, but like, it sorta made the entire political subplot wasted. A twist I didn’t like was the whole “haha, you THOUGHT she got the warrant to arrest him but she DIDN’T bc the politics in this city are corrupt af” ya, just, probably could have been cut out, but also this is a sports anime where grown adults put on costumes to do ridiculous anime skating illegally, I wasn’t expecting an award winning masterpiece.

I already mentioned it, but I really do like the quality of the animation here. I think it’s definitely what sets Bones apart from many other studios, and in general, probably what saved Sk8 from feeling generic. The animation is dynamic, the colors pop, and the settings are gorgeous and detailed. It just makes me happy to see so much care and details put into it. Just the flipping physics of skateboarding alone are cool to see be explained and animated. Does it pull some sports and BS of humanly impossible feats? Yeah, but they look flipping awesome, combined with everything else, I think it just makes it a good time. Also DAMN I LOVED that compilation in I think episode 2? Of Reki just showing Langa many videos and magazines about skating. It just added another layer of realism to it.

Overall tho, I’m gonna rewatch this one A COUPLE times. It was just a good time, and I will gladly watch more if it comes out, but in the meantime, I can entertain myself with this for a while.
