i think my biggest problem w/ rwby @ this point is how much they love shock value and making their characters suffer for entertainment. Ever since the end of volume 8 there’s been an air of “you’ll never guess what happens next!!” before the result being death, destruction, sadness, etc.

They played the Everything is Horrible card to wrap up volume 3 and it almost feels like theyve been trying to recapture that “woah what the hell???” factor ever since.

the volume 8 ending marked a really dark turn for rwby as a show, with scenes so graphic and upsetting that you can feel the grins on the writer’s faces when they told themselves “This is a game changer, no one will EVER expect this.” even though many of the darker themes were already explored much more tactfully in v3.

but the result is much more damning, because now, nothing is shocking. It’s the factor that made most people stop reading attack on titan. if ANYTHING is fair game, no matter how dark, then why get invested in any of it??? Hell, they made bumbleby canon after years of baiting, doubling back, yearning, etc, and it didnt even end up being the climax of the episode!!! (no really! that episode kept going after the happiest scene all season).

Now like, volume 9 has been arguably going better than its predecessors in terms of character writing, but it’s also really awkward to watch them stumble and trip over the decisions they made for the volume 8 ending. There’s a deep deep feeling that if the team just talked to each other for more than 5 minutes, none of these events would be taking place. It’s narrative tension in such a bland form. the biggest relief in the entire season was an extended scene where blake and yang FINALLY talk about their feelings. after AN ENDLESS SUPPLY of skirting around their issues, and unfortunately, that episode ended, and we had plenty more show afterwards.

This latest episode was a tough sell for me. i already don’t exactly trust RT to handle “sensitive/distressing themes”, and to that end i think that Ruby’s “decision” in this episode could’ve used much more sensitive & informed lead-in. Also, straight up there are some really dark things in this episode ASIDE from that, that I swear to god, someone was smiling over in the writer’s room.

SPOILERS: you can try to make Neo a sympathetic villain, or you can have her crush a defenseless mouse to death under her heel, but you can’t do both, dude. Ya just can’t.

END SPOILERS: overall, i think im fine w/ this season. it’s overall decent and is trying it’s best to handwave away all the bad decisions made in previous seasons. That method CAN work if it’s in the interest of making a more thematically interesting show & learning from your past mistakes, but instead it feels like they’re simply running from tragedy to tragedy, with glimpses of happiness that are starting to feel more like a trick they can pull out whenever they want to lure you into a false sense of security. Characters being happy is now a surefire sign that there’s going to be a character death soon.

SPOILERS AGAIN SORRY THIS IS DISORGANIZED: my friend hannah pointed out that one of the most egregious parts of this episode is that neo didnt know most of the people she was puppeting around to psychologically torture Ruby. Neo’s actions were supposed to convince Ruby that all these deaths were her fault, but because there’s VERY few characters that fit that bill, you end up with the issue of many characters being folks Neo shouldn’t even know the status of (unless she can suddenly read minds)

Leo, the headmaster of mistral died while ruby & friends were off screen, and was DIRECTLY killed by Salem without Ruby’s involvement.

Ozpin and Pyrrha were killed by Cinder, while Neo was busy careening into the abyss on her umbrella, implying in that in their brief time together, Cinder explained everyone who died who had a connection to Ruby. Neo clearly guesses that penny is dead in the first place, meaning that her even KNOWING about Leo is completely unexplainable. Neo also shouldnt have known that Ironwood was dead, and on top of all else, why does she think that Ruby would blame herself for clover???? methinks the writers just wanted to fill seats in neo’s scary fucked up dining room. wacky decision.

Or maybe it isnt, because the first thing i thought was: “Wow thats so scary what the fuck”

which again points a big neon arrow to the writing issues of current rwby: It was done to be shocking even though it doesn’t make sense.

I have a hard time believing any of the events of this episode are ones they’ll stick with. All of the characters who “died” in this episode can plausibly come back in some way shape or form, so I guess now its time to just wait n see what happens.

is there seriously nowhere to buy textbooks in person anymore for vic uni?? wow that really is horrible. fuck all the "protestors" and their lingering sentiment. what's your opinion on vic uni as it stands now? i've heard from a lot of people that in recent years it has changed (in a negative way), and even tho the uni wasn't responsible for the protestors, i heard from some people that they weren't so keen on the uni in the aftermath. whether it was due to the proximity to parliament or i also heard the uni's response towards students was basically "tough luck" when their finances and studies were impacted due to the "protestors"

yeah we got emails and the response was straight up "nothing we can do, avoid coming in if you feel threatened" which was like. yeah?? we feel threatened? 12-18 yr old girls at the local high school had to add like 20/30 mins to their commute because if they went past the protests they would be harassed. my 19 yr old coworker was reduced to tears by a man screaming at her at the train station about her mask. she had to come into work using uber to avoid it happening again. she lived over an hour away, it was NOT cheap.

i walked past or through the protestors a lot because i had to go in that way to study, home was too busy and our internet was spotty. i had to get very used to ignoring the shouting. but the public were at boiling point by the end assaults/harassment of the general public had gone up, local businesses being invaded happened more and suddenly people were driving past the protestors throwing milkshakes or yelling at them, which only made them more aggressive.

as for whats up at vic im not sure im the best person to ask. i dont pay attention to too many of the changes and rarely participate in clubs (i did help with classical theater and uniq in my first 2 years)

what i can say is the million dollars spent on the new science centre was useless, as the reason the science department needed a new building was because their lecture halls and labs were too small. the buildings rooms are the exact same size as they were in the other building. so the science faculty are fucked if they want anything for the next decade because "oh well you just got a new building." i dont know why theyve bought that massive bloody abandoned building down the hill and dont see how paying for its destruction is going to help with costs, god knows what they plan on putting there. at least first years will stop breaking in and cutting themselves on broken glass and nails/falling through broken flooring.

i adore pretty much all but one or two lecturers ive had at vic, the good ones are exceptionally good and make attending class a joy. and because nz is so small they know everyone in their subject worth knowing and are happy to make connections with them possible which is a lifesaver. also as someone who restarted their degree cos health problems + changed subjects ive had a LOT of lecturers from psych to classics to media studies to polsci. my main problem is the problem is the treatment of lecturers.

a close friend of mine from high school works as a tutor there and as much as he adores it, every time hes ever gotten his paycheck its because his union pressed vic to send it on time. recently theres been protests by staff for better pay, which i fully support, i even attended some protests because quite frankly for the experience, knowledge and ties these people have they are paid a pittance.

as for the book stores, we have multiple bookstores here but most are secondhand. the ones that arent dont stock textbooks, because the dedicated textbook place for 50+ years has been vicbooks. i dont know who it will fall to. unitybooks maybe? or we'll just have to order online like i said before.

but with the protests, people likely got turned off heading to vic because, ultimately, parliaments down the hill from from it. literally you just gotta walk up the terrace, turn right and then walk another 5 minutes. takes 20 minutes if youre fit enough. getting into uni was near impossible for most people because you had to go through or past the protest camp to get there (unless you were lucky enough to live on the other side of the city and go up the terrace the other side). also, because the main city train station and main city bus station are/were on the other side of the camp, it made confrontation if you used those modes of transport unavoidable.

ultimately the protest is not vics fault, not by a mile. if i were to blame anyone it would be 1. the protestors themselves 2. the police, who, when i walked past on day one, had only sent a cop car and 3 cops to watch over the situation, which is how they managed to pitch all the tents/blockade the traffic/take as much ground as they did. police were woefully, woefully unprepared. 3rd blame goes to the tow companies who all refused to remove the vehicles blocking the street because they were sympathetic to the group that were spraying nazi symbols on the war monument and calling for execution of our politicians. fuck them.

honestly im just glad that its over, even a year on. my dad was coming home when the fighting broke out and he could see them throwing bricks and starting fires a street away and the riot police bearing down on them and using hose. it was incredibly unnerving to watch, esp as i had friends and family working in the buildings around there.

what do you mean by destiny model if they did a da4 multiplayer?

so like. what i mean is that destiny does have a pve and a pvp play style (not going into what is favoured thats not the point). technically anthem was close to what it is... but you can like. do the main missions and uhh scouting stuff and i forget the names PATROLS thats it. like you can solo a decent chunk of the pve element yourself, essentially. i say decent because the game does kind of encourage/force pvp but i digress.. it is an mmo at the end of the day.

ANYWAY, with that sort of model of a balanced pve and pvp, i wouldve figured that would be the angle they would’ve played it, with a roadmap and gradual releases and probably season passes and so on... because ea loooooooooves money and you can stretch out a plot for several years (notice how they SPECIFICALLY called it a service game? that has a whole lot of meaning packed into it), vs if they actually did like a swtor model, where there are pretty decently long stories for 8 classes in the base game, and then expacs which narrow in on one particular story, because swtor is remarkably more solo of a mmo. me3 multiplayer was actually very successful and people still play it (i’ve checked bc ive needed EMS sometimes lmao thanks me3), because it was/still partially is a requirement to yknow. get the “best” ending. but ea havent been able to capture that i mean i really enjoyed mea’s multiplayer for what it was, but it had no bearing on... anything game wise. and i never touched dai’s multiplayer yknow?

im incredibly glad to see canned it, but i wouldve figured it wouldve played much like a destiny roadmap and release style gameplay... which works for destiny, because there is still shit loads to do in the base game. it has pros and cons, but especially i think they realised that anthem folded because the company had no experience with that sort of game to that level (swtor aside). consistently updating, needing a new ‘exotic’ kind of style mission every other week, the entire pvp element also needs to be constantly balanced and tweaked and then also the players who stream (do get favoured but also) bring in, generally, huge swathes of crowds, seasonal events, the concept of a in game store, etc etc etc etc just. yeah. bioware’s strengths have always been in their singleplayer storytelling, no matter how back and forth we can go on that technicality but. that’s what they’re known for. if da4 had played like destiny (anthem being a road test at the company doing that) it probably wouldve flopped, in all honesty. not just from the company but... the audience aren’t going to play it. so many factors work into multiplayer games as well... reliable internet connection, playing with people, money, money and more money. just from that angle too, it would’ve fallen on it’s own sword.

yall celebrated at the normal hang-out spot which was the ramen shop and it truly shocked you at how much these boys ate

bc of how you are with them, sometimes, they forget that you are actually just a first year

they get shocked whenever you walk in with kunimi and kindaichi and talk about the current homework bc it slips their mind that their hard-working manager was actually just a 15-year-old girl

so, they try to ease the burden whenever they can

like iwa offering to help you whenever you have to take their jerseys to the laundrymat

or offering to help you with your assignments since theyve only been through it once

more like watari, yahaba, and iwa bc the matsuhana are clueless and acts like they completely skipped that grade

more than once theyve cornered you to threaten you to stay away from their senpai or youll have something coming for you

you never take them seriously bc you can fight too and you just give them a look and push them away

at the mention of his first name, her eyes widened and her face twisted and she slapped you

‘oh? thats funny, because he actually told me to call him that since he wants his cute little manager to be very comfortable with him’

you achieved a feat that she has been working to get her entire high school life and miyo was not happy

‘ive been with him for 3 years and you just suddenly show up out of nowhere and call him that?! i dont think so!’

she had her hands around your neck and you gripped her arms, making her wince

but you laughed at that comment

‘heh, thats pathetic, isn’t it? here you are, my senpai, who has been vying for his attention for 3 years only to be ignored yet a mere first year, who shows up out of nowhere, has been asked to a date nearly a million times every day. that must be tough’

she shrieked at that comment and threw you on the floor, making you accidentally hit your head at the edge of the sink

yall im actually so bothered by this scene and im wincing as im typing

you bit your lip to prevent any sound of pain to escape bc you knew thats what she wanted to hear from you

but you werent going to give her the satisfaction

instead, you looked up at her, hatred swirling in your eyes

‘youre freaking psycho, you know that? once tooru and hajime knows about this, theyre going to give you hell. they wont ever let this go bc im the manager of their prized team and their little baby sister. so go ahead, do what you want with me. bc i paid too much for these nails to be tainted by dirt like you’

saiyo, a girl you noticed to be watari’s classmate when you went and visited him, nervously tugged on miyo’s jacket

‘miyo, we should go-’

and she poured over a carton of banana milk over you, making you wince at the sticky and cold liquid

the tough facade was crumbling and you were now screaming for help in your head, hoping that stupid theory from yahaba about team telepathy to work

when miyo and her girls left, you sat on the floor, soaked and sticky and bleeding

then you begin to cry angry tears

you were angry that you were being treated like this just bc you were a manager

you were angry that you let them do that to you

you were angry that you prized your nails more than punching her square in the nose

staggering on your own feet, you stood up and leaned on the sink, eyes widening at the dripping red liquid from the gash on your forehead, staining the porcelain sink

you were stupid and unconsciously touched it making you wince

you whined quietly

there was little you can do with toilet paper and water to clean yourself up but you managed to at least stop the bleeding

you knew you had to be put on concussion protocol just in case bc you that hit was quite hard but at the moment, that wasnt your concern

practice has already started and this was the first time you werent present for daily practice

this was confirmed at the constant buzzing of your phone in your skirt pocket which you didnt listen to and instead, started thinking of ways to go to your locker and get your stuff and fake being sick but at the same time, not be seen and relayed to the team

time was ticking and you had to come up with a plan fast before oikawa will send the team to come looking around the building for you

once you looked at your reflection and smiled big, you decided it was enough to not show the pain you were in right now

girl im hurting for you

you peeked out of the bathroom door and saw the coast was clear so you quickly ran to your classroom, which was thankfully empty, and quickly grabbed your things

but as you were packing up, the tears just kept falling

it didnt stop as you bolted down the stairs, using your cardigan to hide your face from the public

once you were safely out of school grounds, you finally took out your phone and reviewed through all the worried and concerned texts from the team group chat

but you just replied, ‘im fine but i just feel really sick right now. girl stuff’

you smirked, knowing that would keep the boys away

but oikawa had to go and ask you to call him

‘y/n-chan! do you want oikawa-senpai to come over with chocolates and ice cream?! wings or no wings?!’

your jaw dropped at the question and clearly scandalized by the question

the team was too as shouting began and you could faintly hear iwa scream, ‘oh my god, shittykawa!’

‘im seriously okay, oikawa-san. i just need to be alone right now and ill try and get some sleep. good bye’

then you hung up

there was no way you could tell them

they were in their last year anyways so doing something about it wouldnt matter

and you were strong 

but apparently not strong enough to fight them off though

you would cover the wound with concealer and continue on with practice tomorrow as if everything was normal

but there was only so much you could take

just yesterday, they trashed your locker and a week ago, they took your bento and threw it away

you even got into a fight with this one girl but she scampered away, too scared to do anything alone

so you were actually just tired and want everyone to leave you alone

Coloring pages and child development

Can you draw a straight line? Most adults dont consider themselves artistic. Parents do, however, worry about their toddlers art abilities. As a child care provider for the past 10 years, Ive had many discussions with parents about how their toddler is doing as far as getting ready for preschool or kindergarten. They worry a lot about the final product of their toddlers art projects. I try to explain to them that art is not just knowing how to draw a flower or a puppy, or whether or not little Jason colors in the lines. Little kids need to experience self-expression and the doing of art more than having a page from a coloring book to hang on the refrigerator.

When a two-year old puts his chubby little hand in a tub of finger paint and happily smears all of the colors together on the paper or when he makes yet another snowman out of play-doh, hes creating. Granted, he will certainly tell you that his painting is his dads truck even though you just cant see it. The important thing to remember is that by allowing our little kids to experience art in their own way, we let them show us how they see the world around them, how they feel and think.

I always enjoy art time with my toddler and preschool age groups. Yeah, they can make a mess, but they just wiggle with excitement when I take out the arts & crafts tub of supplies! Having lived in a few different places, Ive always returned to providing home day care. As a result, Ive had to make do with whatever space I can find in the various homes weve lived in. Theres not always a lot of room, but art can take place just about anywhere. Ive found that the activity is most effective when its pre-planned and when Ive set goals for the activity.

Art is important for toddlers because of the way it makes little kids feel special and good about themselves. When your toddler finishes a magazine cut-out collage and holds up his masterpiece to you with that beaming smile doesnt that make you feel good about both of you? Through creating simple art projects, that same toddler is not only learning to take pride in his accomplishments, but also to think and refine his hand-eye coordination and physical skills. Through art, children learn to identify colors, cause-and-effect, shapes, problem solving, sharing and cooperation among many other skills.

Parents must remember to ask toddlers or preschoolers questions about their projects that will make them think about what theyve made rather than ask them What is that? For example, C.J., tell Mommy about your painting. C.J will start to talk about his work or anything else he feels important at the time! This also shows your child that you are interested in what he thinks and arent just confused about what you see! Make sure to hang the art work up in a prominent place in your home so the entire family can enjoy it.

Art experiences are a major part of a toddlers daily activities. They have grown enough to grasp objects and tear paper and hold crayons and brushes. Naturally they are thrilled with the anticipation of a new art project, and most importantly, with the quality time spent with the important adults in his/her life.

i always knew i didnt like beyblade 2002/v-force and now that im forcing myself to rewatch it it’s all coming back to me lol

i feel like people hate on how “ugly” s1 looked but honestly i find it charming and prefer it over the changed style in v-force and g-rev (mostly vforce) bc like they actually had different shaped eyes, faces, etc. and looked unique whereas the changed style has a lot of them same-facing it except for like kai’s and rei’s pointier eye shapes. also i like the clothing designs in v-force but why do they look like theyre like fuckin 8 years old now?? like they weirdly de-aged from s1? theres definite improvement in g-rev but idk what was going on for this season

my main gripe however is the main characters’ personalities. like takao could be overconfident in s1 sure but now he’s just a straight-up douchebag and actually really annoying at times even tho i rly liked him overall. like yes one can argue winning the world championships went to his head but geez theres a difference between confidence and just being a dick, whereas the other bba members barely have a personality now? like some aspects that made them them are just gone, and sure it makes sense for kai to not be quite as snarky as he was in s1 but max has like a third of his personality, doesnt use his cute english words/phrases, and is now somehow an established flirt? i guess rei didnt quite have an exact defining quality to begin with, at least not as blatant as the others, but he’s a little blander and him and max were weirdly shoehorned in. they prob needed to establish hiromi as a main character and her place in the group first but the reunion/“togetherness” of the bba team was rly lackluster. its just weird thinking about the significance each of the four had in s1 but now seems like theyve taken a backseat to takao, which is even more annoying since hes acting like a dick. i guess they expected people to already know the characters from s1? 

also im still just up to ep9 but i remember they get into a fight later and i get that in s1 they had all met each other for the first time and it was easy to be friendly and get along well so now, after knowing each other for a while, it makes sense for them to get into a fight bc its bound to happen among friends but idk i guess that just adds on to my dislike for v-force. there was a sense of camaraderie and uplifting one another in s1 but they seem distant to each other so far 

and i get since the world championships and other teams were first introduced in s1 and then g-rev went back to that route it rly couldnt be done for v-force without becoming repetitive but its plot is weirdly interesting and boring at the same time. like the concept is there but the execution is lacking. maybe if they were acting more like themselves? also its weird that the other teams from s1 feel utterly nonexistent in this season lol

maybe things will change in that aspect as i keep watching and some points i made may not be accurate anymore but i just remember last time it got so bad i just skipped the whole thing and went straight to g-rev lol season 1 will probably always be my favorite

the narrative doesn’t take the situation seriously. instead of leaning into the anguish of war and violence (atla, teen titans) - they make light of it. EVEN when the characters’ guardians are KILLED!!

when Angella died and they spent 2 seconds on Glimmer’s grief at the end of season 3 i was like......actually fuck this. HOW can i take any of these stakes seriously when they insist on brushing them off???

anyway just had to complain about that - especially because the start of the first ep of 4 is them joking AGAIN about something as grim as Glimmer now carrying all the responsibilities of her mother - who may i remind you IS DEAD

the interesting thing about this show is that they’re setting up a dichotomy. they’re treating war like a high-stakes game because they have the good side adhere to an aesthetic of ....magic. they will not make the two sides equivalent in any way - which makes questions of morality moot. the show is purely an emotional drama. the horde is an army of brainwashed kids in an industrial wasteland - they fight with tech and guns. but the good guys cannot fight with an army or tech, they fight with cleverness and magic. they’re called the ‘rebellion’ - they HAVE to be underdogs because they have to follow the script of good - even though what’s really going on is war, not a rebellion. That’s why they have a single strike team that do ‘missions’. They are presented as FUNDAMENTALLY different - on the level of identity which they cannot change lest they destroy themselves - and in that way the good guys can never become the bad guys. it is ALMOST meta. think they’re gonna do something with that at one point. i hope

(this may seem harsh but adora is DUMB shes so fucking DUMB!!!! and she has many good qualities (such as an almost innate sense of morality) but goddamn. i guess its good to sometimes have a show about all around dumb characters. i mean, it’s not unrealistic per se, it’s just.....weird.)

the interesting thing about these characters is that you can SEE every single one of them struggling with cognitive dissonance. thats the big story of this show. they see the world a certain way - and then when something challenges that, they fight to the death to destroy or deny or ignore that new information - to everybody’s detriment. and they can’t back down because every step they’ve taken - would turn to sins they can’t live with. it’s interesting and its also a kind of conflict that‘s frustrating if not resolved at SOME point. thats why i love this season for its characters going off the rails. adora aiming to kill catra, catra destroying her last relationships, glimmer growing more and more militant.

they’re all acting like teens - that  is - highly volatile - unable to keep from provoking others or be provoked - but they ARE teens.

‘catra doesn’t care. she’ll hurt people to get her way (implied: EVEN people on her side)’ - we must remember that Scorpia was entirely fine with KILLING the trio (it was Catra that wasn’t at the time).

‘you’re a bad friend’ OH OUCH. Catra - who’s always been treated as a whipping girl by those in power - does the same to those she is in power over. But on some level she doesn’t WANT to be that. she’s just always always been rejected and take advantage of and lashed out at and abandoned by the people she considered important (shadowweaver ---- doing the same to catra that was done to her is so goddamn....it’s the story of this show. the simplicity and banality of damaging and hurting others and that carrying over to harm even more people - is the story of this show and it’s immeasurably frustrating and REALISTIC)

she still flinches at Hordak’s lashing out. but she imprints on him the exact lesson she’s trying to school herself in. If you don’t need anybody - you don’t want anyone - if nobody matters but the mission and winning - then you can’t be hurt. she wants to prove her worth - but she doesn’t realise that inherently means that she’s putting somebody in power over her - again and again and again.

mermista coming  in clutch with the braincells: there’s a spy! I love how this is played as completely implausible and just Mermista nonsense (who i love learning about) - while it’s so obviously true/

i actually love Adora when she’s being serious and heroic, or a huge dork. and she has the wit to RECOGNISE good ideas. but i just don’t understand why Adora is being big b about being used as a distraction. like....why?

i love that the underside of Mermista’s sneaker has a figure. but why the fuck is a common soldier with them (flatterina) and do they really think they can interrogate the whole castle filled with some shitty guards and...what - the guerilla troops they sometimes employ? where do they even live? ah in a tent city. ok

why is the GENERAL in front line combat WITHOUT SOLDIERS???? oh wait. glimmer did that too when she was general. lolololol

i understand why Adora doesn’t trust Shadowweaver and doesn’t want her around most of all - and Glimmer getting buddy buddy with her is hurtful. but...it’s not helpful to needle glimmer about it. but dismissing the guards around shadowweaver however? stupid of Glimmer. unnecessary. ‘what has she done but help us?’ - uhhhh she kidnapped you, corrupted your powers, almost wiped Adora’s mind. I wish Adora had summed up those things instead of leaving them implied.

so perfuma and mermista come across inconsistencies in the stories - but then. forget about it? i just...... UGGHGHGHGHGHGHGH. people really aren’t this dumb are they? they’re just NOT.

so what im getting is that. the Old Ones colonised Etheria. Etheria has magic, and when Mara was chosen they made that girl an elite soldier - giving her a first one’s tech sword so she could ‘control’ Etheria’s magic. Then Mara was told to study the magic of Etheria - the ship implying that she’d not been on the planet before. then they created a Heart of Etheria project - which will probably turn the magic into a weapon. this was going to be used against Hordak Prime, im sure. I mean, Mara saved Etheria, but she did doom the rest of the universe to...extinction.... like, judging from Hordak’s strategy, Hordak Prime just literally exterminates planets and repopulates them with his clones....

But why would the planet choose a girl from amongst the colonisers - twice?

Gray groaned as he rubbed his rough hand against his stiff neck, letting some cold air seep through his palms to ease the pain for even just a moment.

"I'm gettin' too old for this shit." Gray huffed jokingly to himself as he held his head low, walking his way back to his house. He had gone on a two week long mission, and it completely drained him. He didn't go on missions longer than a week very often, and his aching body was certainly a result of that.

He approached his home and turned the nob to the front door, and he felt his fingers bend in pain. This job really gave him a run for his money, that was for sure.

When Gray wasn't met with an instant greeting, he was a bit thrown off, but didn't think much of it. He made is way down the hall and into his kitchen.

"Surprise!" Juvia and his kids shouted in unison. The three of them all had big proud smiles on their faces which were all identical.

"Wha-" Gray's eyes widened and his mouth gaped open. On the table sat a cake that read "Best Dad Ever" which looked very similar to a certain eight year old's hand writing that he knew. Behind them was a banner with bold letters that said "Welcome Back!" with a present under it.

"What's all this?" His voice was dry from the shock.

"It's Father's Day, Gray-sama" Juvia replied with a pretty smile.

The day completely slipped his mind. He was so worn out from his mission that he kind of lost his concept of time. Truthfully, he couldn't gave said what day of the week it even was. Regardless, Gray felt himself overcome with an immense amount of joy.

Juvia bent down in between the heights of their son and daughter. "You guys can go hug your father now. The surprise part is over." She hummed.

In the next instant there was a child and a toddler hurling themselves at Gray. They met him with great impact as one clung to his waist and the other to his leg.

"Whoa, hey." Gray chuckled and reciprocated both hugs. "I missed you guys."

"We missed you too, Dad! And oh, you gotta' tell me all about it!" Storm let go of Gray first. "Did you beat all the bad guys?! How big were they?! Did you do your ice devil slayer stuff?!" He spoke a mile a minute, eyes gleaming with wonder and admiration for his father.

"Yes, huge, and yes." Gray looked down at his son with a grin on his face. "I'll give you the details after I rest a bit, ok?" Gray ruffled a hand through Storm's navy blue waves on his head as he pouted in disappointment.

"Did you freeze them, Daddy?" Gray looked lower at his daughter who was still wrapped around his leg. He scooped her up and brought her to his hip.

"Sure did." He smiled.

Neva's big black eyes widened in awe. "And you did the hair thing?"

Juvia and Gray both chuckled. She was referring to his hair sticking up when he used his devil slayer magic.

"Yes, raindrop. My hair did the thing."

"Can you do it?!" Neva perked up.

"Yeah, dad, do the thing!" Storm tugged at his arm.

"Daddy just got back from a big mission, and he's very tired." Juvia walked over to them and brushed a hand through Neva's deep blue locks.

"Aww!" Both kids groaned together.

"Weren't you just saying how excited you were for cake?" Juvia said sweetly to Neva.

"Oh, yeah! Cake time!" Neva squirmed and Gray set her on the ground, and sure enough she sprinted to the cake.

"Storm, why don't you go get daddy's present?" Juvia Kissed the top of her son's head, and he did as he was told.

Once the kids were preoccupied for a moment, Juvia turned to Gray, and her face softened.

"Juvia missed you very much, Gray-sama." She quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, causing Gray to stumble back into a wall, earning a rush of pain to his back.

Gray groaned as he caught his balance and stepped away from the wall, finally putting an arm around Juvia's waist. "And I thought I was done with getting my ass kicked." He scoffed.

Juvia giggled. "Juvia will take that as an 'I miss you too.'" She pressed a kiss on Gray's lips.

Juvia turned an began walking away and gray lowered his hand, discreetly pulling her close to him.

"I'll let you know how much I missed you later." He whispered as he grabbed a little more tightly on her side. Red rushed to Juvia's face, earning a content grin from Gray.

"Juvia will hold you to that." She whispered back, flipped her hair, and began to walk away as Gray watched, still with the same grin on his face.

"Have a seat, dear." Juvia finished her way to the table and pulled out a chair for Gray to sit in, and he followed.

"Damn, what did I do to get treated like royalty?" Gray joked, but on the inside he was boasting.

"Language!" Juvia wagged her finger. "And you are the best husband and father ever. This is the least we could do." She smiled. Gray reached out onto the table and took Juvia's hand, squeezing it.

"Look, Storm did the words on the cake!" Neva's pale face lit up as she pointed to the dessert.

"So that's why it looks like chicken scratch." Gray snorted.

"Hey!" Storm objected as he put the present on the table.

"I'm joking, buddy." Gray grinned and pulled his son in for a hug. "It looks great."

"Well, Mom made it from scratch, so it was really all her." Storm gestured to his mother.

"Then we're in for a treat. Mom's a great cook." Gray looked right at Juvia, causing her to blush.

"I helped too, Daddy!" Neva hopped off her chair and ran over to Gray.

"Oh you did?" Gray picked up the three year old and sat her on his lap. "Then it'll be even better." He playfully began kissing at her cheek, causing Neva to shriek with laughter.

"Ok, ok, Mommy can't wait." Juvia exclaimed, interrupting. "Open your present now." Juvia clapped and nudged the bag towards Gray.

"Sheesh someone's eager." Gray raised a brow.

"Just open it, Dad." Storm nagged excitedly, sounding eerily similar to Juvia.

"Alright, alright." Gray gave in. He turned to Neva who was still perched on his leg. "You wanna' help Daddy?" He asked.

Neva responded with a violent shake of her hair, making her curls swing back and forth.

"No?" Gray was surprised. She was rather nosy, so he was expecting an instant yes.

"Just for you." Neva insisted.

"Well, ok." Gray turned back to the bag, and reached in.

He felt something very soft and pulled it out, and in his hand was a blue knitted scarf.

"Juvia knows you still wear the one I made all those years ago, but, it doesn't hurt to have two." She smiled and shrugged. "And this one's special since the kids helped me."

Once taking a closer look, he could see where the technical things on the scarf started to become inconsistent. It didn't matter though. He loved the scarf.

Gray paused and looked at the scarf, and then at his beautiful family. His wife and kids were the absolute best thing that happened to him, and he didn't know what he did to deserve them. He had to do everything in his power to fight back tears. Damn, they really made him a softy. He didn't mind, though. They also made him the happiest man alive.

"I love it." Gray announced and instantly wrapped it around his neck. "Thank you guys so much." Gray brought his kids in for a hug as a grin was plastered on his face.

"Don't forget to read the card." Juvia inquired.

Gray broke the hole from his kids and reached into the bag to find an envelope. He opened it and the card read "Happy Father's Day!". The inside had little pictures that the kids drew and Gray chuckled while looking at them.

The bottom was signed, "Love, Mommy, Storm, Neva, & Baby Fullbuster."

Gray froze. He looked down at the card, rereading the signatures over and iver again. Once he finally decided he was sure of what he read, he looked straight up at a very anxious Juvia, and his jaw was on the floor.

"A-are you..?" Gray felt something well up in his throat.

Juvia couldn't hold it in any longer. She responded with a vigorous nod. Gray carefully placed Neva on the ground and instantly jumped up and hugged his wife, giving her a little spin off the ground.

"You're pregnant?!" Gray's voice was light, and he felt his eyes sting with those tears he was trying to hold back.

"Yep." Juvia bit her lip in a smile and placed her hand onto her belly.

He looked back at his children. "And did you guys know this whole time?!"

They responded with uncontrollable giggles amongst each other. Gray smiled and ran over to them, scooping them both off the ground and playfully threw them over his back.

"You think you can just keep secrets from your old man like that?!" He jested, and the kids responded in fits of laughing.

Gray finally set them down. "How far along are you?"

"Porlyusica says about seven weeks." Juvia's hand remained on her stomach.

"Wow." Gray finally let out a breath. He took another look at his glowing wife and kids. "You guys really know how to throw a welcome back party." He let out an airy laugh and was so overwhelmed he felt a tear leak out of his eye, and he did his best to nonchalantly wipe it away.

"Want some cake, Daddy?" Neva tugged on his pant leg.

"I would love some." He grinned.

"I'll get you a slice!" Storm quickly hurried to the cake.

"Be careful, sweetie." Juvia followed him over and made sure he didn't cut any fingers off.

At this point, Gray was certain he was the luckiest guy in the world.

i’m sorry that you’re not getting the support you need from your family. it sounds like they might not be the best people to share in the experience with you. straight up, if you think they would make you feel unwelcome or uncomfortable, they’re not good people to go with. i didn’t go to pride with my family, and i don’t know if i ever will for similar reasons (i’m trying it out with a sibling for the first time this summer, we’ll see how it goes). 

because you’re right! this is about YOU and you should celebrate in ways and with people that make you feel completely comfortable and safe (and have FUN! this should be fun!!!)!! friends or colleagues are a great alternative. it’s also perfectly acceptable (and common) to go by yourself! i was stressed going to my first pride so i brought my dog, too, and that made it easier (and people are always willing to talk to someone with a dog lol -- i insta-made like 3 friends over CAN I PET YOUR DOG). it’s also okay not to go to pride right away if you’re not comfortable (i had to work myself up to going. i think it took 3 years lmao)-- it doesn’t make you any less proud. 

do what’s best for you, friend. it might not involve your family--which i know can be hard, especially since your sister is LGBT+ as well -- but that’s completely on them, and not on you at all. it is so much better to distance yourself from that sort of toxic behavior (and it IS toxic to say that to a fourteen year old sibling and never address it again)

re: “you look like a lesbian,” i used to get that all the time growing up, too. a lot of people (including partners) told me i was bi before i ever came out or even thought about my sexuality at all-- and ngl it made me really distance myself from my identity for a long time because i was raised in a homophobic household & like you said, i didn’t want to prove anyone right. i officially came out when i was a Certified Adult, and then had to deal with a lot of people saying ~they knew all along~ which is pretty fucking irritating, but also a gross way for people to pat themselves on the back (another reason why the term ‘gaydar’ needs to fucking die). so i completely understand the feelings you’re having, and they’re such miserable ones to have :(

but again, you’re right in saying that “this is supposed to be me worrying abt me and not them.” there’s no way to “look like a lesbian” because lmao there’s not one type of lesbian! you’re you, and that’s a great person to be! truly!! if i have learned one thing, it’s that being able to discover yourself, on your own terms, is the best thing in the world and it sounds like you’re well on your way if not there already. just from this ask, you sound far more insightful than i ever was at your age.

It’s not as though Natalie Green knew what this year held in store or what would exist at the end of the road. Though, at every step of the way, he kept going. Embodied in both his music and his story of perseverance, is a rare example of an artistic soul that found peace where few would ever dream to look. It took months of learning and continued questioning of himself and what he wanted to be. But in the end, it resulted in a man anew.

With a new project taking shape in studio sessions that contrast his earlier life, Natalie Green is finding a voice he previously was nervous to share, speaking louder than before. The ideas, memoirs and anxieties he hopes to express have become clear. With every note, he continually finds himself as much as he does connect to those who battle the same confusions.

Natalie Green now stands with a new asset he hadn’t held prior, the ability to embark on the path he wants, not the one life throws him upon. He can stand and become the artist he visualizes, the artist he knows is essential to reveal to the world. For the first time in a while, Natalie Green is in control, with a steering wheel in hand and a road of possibility on the horizon.

Our first question as always, how’s your day going and how are you?

Things have been hectic, but good. Good busy you know? There are different kinds of busy and this one has been all positive.

On your last EP last year, it sounded like you weren’t fully at peace, do you find that you are now after a year of personal introspection?

Yeah for sure, when I was writing the EP, I was in a really terrible place physically, emotionally and mentally. It was a passion project when it came out, I didn’t have to think about it. Whereas now, I’ve got a place, I’m not just in my car anymore, I emotionally feel a lot more centered, I have my head on straight. I’ve found friends and people that I love to surround myself with. Everything’s been a thousand times better.

When you’re looking within this shift you’ve undertaken, where do you think you’ve personally grown the most, whether artistically or as an individual?

I think I’ve gotten more empathetic towards people. All people. As well, I feel more self-aware. What I realized when living in my car was that I didn’t know myself. Living in a house again with roommates made me, in a new way, learn more about myself, and where I needed to spend a lot of time mentally. As far as musically, I feel more confident, I think that’s apparent in my vocals and instrumentation, they’re far more personal in that sense.

With the new year in season, being a time of reflecting upon the past year, do you have any memories that stick out to you as positive through the difficult and turbulent times?

There’s a lot. I don’t know if there’s one specific moment, but definitely moving into the apartment. I also got to play a private show in my friend’s backyard for all my close friends. That was a big moment for me. There’s a lot of moments where I had friends reassure me, and believe in me when I wasn’t doing so myself. One of my best friends from back home came to live here a little while ago, that was really special to have him back. The whole tour with Roy, of course, was inspiring, to see him do all that and becoming closer to everyone I went on tour with will forever be in my memories.

With that tour, and even more so working on Cat Heaven, happening while you were working on your own projects, did they influence the way you approached your new work?

There are certain things I learn from other people I can implement in my own music later. There will be something I’ll figure out while I’m working with someone, be it a sound or a new style, I can kinda pull out later. A lot of it is just talking to others and learning their inspirations and how that reflects in their music. Then turning and comparing that to my own influences and seeing how I do the same. It’s all just inspiration.

To touch on that idea of inspiration, you’ve mentioned in the past how you have a wide range on influences in your life in terms on music, but in the last year, which artists have really been influencing the work you’re putting out?

There’s been a lot of really great artists I just got into this past year-ish, but a big one is Michelle Zauner, who’s the singer for Japanese Breakfast. I’m hugely inspired by her, the fact she directs her own music videos and does all her own creative output, it’s really amazing. I’ve also loved the movies of Michel Gondry and the writing of Charlie Kaufman, anything they work on is amazing and so intoxicating.

With this new album you’re ramping up to release, has there been a difference in approach to how you wrote songs and lyrics? And how does that process look like?

I mean it’s been different for almost every song, I tried to do the album the same way I did the EP, and it wasn’t working right. Every song I wrote just felt lacklustre or the same. So to change it up, I had to change my methods, like the first song I wrote, I did two guitar parts first and then I sang, then produced over. That is very different to the EP which was songs first then lyrics. There are certain songs where before I recorded, I had a guitar riff and just wrote the song in a very traditional way, just chords and singing. Maybe loops would be first at times, and then they’d be built off of. Everything has been different.

It’s interesting because it sounds like you’ve really been adding more to your skill set as an artist, would you say that if you had a tool belt of music, that you’ve been adding towards it in the last while?

Yeah, definitely. I’ve been doing that my whole life honestly. I started in bands, not knowing how to produce or anything, but I could play guitar and from then I learned the bass just to add of that. Then I learned production, and that is forever useful. Now I’m working more to be an artist and learn what that entails and requires. Every time I learn something new I really take that and hold onto it until needed.

If you could create your ideal music creation space, where would it be and how would it look like?

That’s interesting, It would really just need to be a secluded place. A place I could disappear and a place I could be as loud as I want as late as I want. No interruptions, all the equipment I needed. Some food, drinks and a bathroom, that’s all I need.

Over the year you’ve posted some concerts you went to, like Paramore in the summer. Are there other shows you saw live that really had an impact upon you and maybe changed the way you approach live shows yourself?

Well, of course, the tour with Roy, he’s been super inspiring in general and watching the man work is amazing. He has a lot of fantastic ideas and he goes through with them. I saw Daisy as well, and they’re so good live. Solange was also amazing with her stage design and her choreography. I also saw Soccer Mommy pretty recently, and it wasn’t too extravagant but it was so well done and exciting to see as a fan of the music.

When you’re on stage, even something like the backyard show you mentioned earlier, what’s the emotion you’re trying to achieve and what is the mindset that you find yourself within at that moment?

When I played that private show, I realized all my songs were pretty mellow and hard to dance or move to. All except for Beachwood didn’t translate very well. So with this new project, I want them to translate really well live, to feel energetic, to feel lively. The songs are just fun. But I keep that emotion in and make sure that I don’t lose what made the earlier work so special and important.

What’s been the overall message you’re trying to pursue this new work and what is it you’re hoping to convey?

I kinda just want to tell my story. Or a story of mine. If people learn things from that, its great, but I’m just saying what happened in my experience. What I realized is that there’s a lot of shitty things that happened to me in my life, but the truth is that things could be a lot worse, so far they’ve been pretty good for the most part. While I had those tough days, I’m still here kicking it.

I apologize if it’s a repeated question, but with the topic of your story, what’s the meaning behind the stage name you’ve taken upon yourself?

It is and it isn’t part of my story in a way. A big part of that choice was that I wanted to separate myself from my old name and work. I wanted this to be super new. The name is taken from two names of people I am very inspired by. And it also, to me, sounds like the quintessential hot girl from a high school, the girl in the coming of age movie they all go after.

If you had a message to artists out there who may find themselves in the same space as you have previously found yourself within, those who may feel as unsure, what would be your lesson to pass on?

I think it doesn’t matter if you’re as confident or as talented as you want to be, as long as you recognize what sounds good to you, just put out the song. It doesn’t matter if you think your voice was bad, just keep progressing as an artist. If you wait for that progression you’ll never put stuff out, you’ll never be happy. With whatever you have right now, just start putting something, anything, out.

"Too many bongs" silly bastard.

So it started when i was around 15 my cousin was living with me and my Dad, he smoked pot, so did my aunty but ill get into that in a bit. I used to sneak into my cousins room and look for crumbs of weed in his draws if i found some i would scarpe them up run into my room and roll a joint. And then off too school i went. I was on the bus right (thought i was super stoned) smelt more like tobacco but oh well i was just getting into it. I packed myself a tin of baked beens and some other garbage thought it was hilarious and sat next to a girl from highschool and giggled the whole was. That was loads of fun. Serously, it was dont mind my monotone like writing im just not in the descriptive mood you know. It gets like that after too many trips. So off on the gateway heaven to drugs (not good, dont condone. sarcasm) And then my favourite cousin, the on i grew up with just around the corner from me and i would sneak into my aunties room and scuffle around ooking for scrapings of weed on the ground we got high all the bloody time and i dont regret that for a second.. i regret it for a lot more. Im starting to feel depressed brb having some valium. I needed to take the edge off. Its unfortunate weed does that to some people. Im starting to really question the war on drugs, and wheres the fucking happy pill? I remember one time me and some of my old friends "were out the back" (where we would smoke bongs) saw her dog eat a whole lizard we cracked up so fucking hard. She literally dug it out of the ground. Its funny being a teenager and thinking your being all stealth mode while your parents know exactly what your doing. We had this weird ongoing joke that we were gagging and spewing after bongs just to see who would actually spew from it. it was hilarious. I wont write about all of that.

so it all started when i was 18 i began to lose my mind. I walked outside and saw the moon beaming. i looked up to the stars and wondered if i was alone. Were there aliens above me? was i sent from above. "clearly i was delusion, says the nagging voice in my head. But i was so filled with wonder, i felt wonderful. This was after smoking a cigarette.. benson and hedges ofcourse. I felt as if i was on a trip. I didnt know whether or not there was drugs in me but looking back its okay. It was a memory... a thought maybe i should get Mr Burns with radiation poising tattood on my overly big calves. Hmm probably not. So, that was my first paranoid delusion which in retrospect is a conspiracy that many people have delved into in he past and havent given up on themselves. but was it heresay for them and experience for us? Thats the question that was just on my mind, Hmm. I was told not long after my eighteenth birthday that i was not going to "make it in life" because i hadnt been to university or finished highschool. So off in an ambulance to the nuthouse i went. Because of PSTD i wont go into it, but i will say this; dont give up before youve really understood yourself and the world. dont giv up ever. Suicide, delusions, conspiracys are memories adventures and i didnt line that up perfectly but look life is life, and there aint nothing better than that. Life is an awfully big adventure. So itd been a long hard 3 months in hospital, i had just gone through another mental beating off of the nurses. One of them pulled my hair. Cunt. In his defence i spat a pill at him cause i was sick of being over drugged. Valium, seroquel, clopixal, flouxitine, clozapine. and many acufazes... they inject the violent patients with it. I couldnt help it id gotten into my first cat fight and enjoyed it a little too much. They locked me in there and then wouldnt let me go to the toilet. So i pissed on there motherfucking floor. "Ha!" had to clean that one up didnt ya hospital. It was really in humane the way they wre treating people honestly its like american horror story back there, where the people never get out. I had a vivid dream that someone was going to kill me. i wasnt wrong they literally dressed up in all black and came for me. i woke up and remembered the one thing my ex told me "i hope you scream" and so i did and he/she ran away i had suspicions that the black hooded figure crept into the medicine room... the room noone ever walked in or out of? Hmm. i wnder what they are hiding. another DREAM i was having was that there were homeless people hiding in the bushes outside of concord waiting to kill. i guess they chose to see red. idiots. Its been a long 10 years discovering the world isnt all rainbows and butterflies. And im over the hospital trying to cover there arses. be gone with it, they are using it as a prison now, trust me. I saw the badges. I was let go, thank fuck for that. My dogs barking madly outside. PRobably seing things pretty sure my dog sees dead people "haha" or possibly shes seeing things in time. I do believe its possible but what it is is a delay in the workings of the universe. Dont tell me that i know theres time differences. I didnt go to uni to have to see to believe. Thre was a woman that was pregnant in there, she smeared shit all over the walls so im guessing she never even got let out to do that. WHAT THE FUCK! SERIOUSLY! I guess the toughst people do go through the toughest battles. Im an aussie battler. ive never used that one before, that saying i mean. i really hope my first love doesnt end his life. Same with my most recent ex he just got out of a relationship with me and went straight back to his first love, and to me thats okay. Its good, im glad. I was going to hold him back ya know? i really was he had money and everything. Thats another thing the test of time has taught me. Love and let go. Wow it just dawned on me that the saying if you love something let it go... wait im changing that if you love someone let them go, and if they go and dont come back theyve moved on positively or negatively. I cant help falling inlove with the feeling of love over and over again. He told me he was going to marry me, were just kids. I wonder if ill ever find someone to love me again. I thought i was depressed and broken hearted. and i really was, i couldnt eat i couldnt sleep i couldnt speak.

"whinging again" the fucking hospital Theyve taken so much blood off of me its unbelievable, okay done whinging.

"sex" here we go. i havent had sex in so long, it feels like years. I cant help that my thing is to make love and really connect on that level where your both in it. really enjoying it.

making up with boyd starts with her approaching him at lunch and sitting down on the same table as him, it’s awkward and stilted and incredibly tense but she works through the dryness of her throat and spends fifteen minutes straight apologising. it ends with allison in tears and boyd holding her hands because he’s gentle and kind and too forgiving, but he knows what loss feels like so he understands. 

erica is a little tougher to crack, she’s sharp and too closed off. but allison is annoyingly persistent, she somehow convinces erica that sparring is a good idea because ‘im sure you wouldnt hate to punch me in the face a couple of times, right?’ and she does. but it’s good because theyve both been so caught up in the danger of their lives they never stopped to just have fun. and it is fun, every time one of them lands a hit they’ll smugly turn around and say ‘I thought you were pyschic bitch’  and it’s exactly the thing they need to heal.

she thinks that derek will always be a little wary around her, they have too much history between their families - too much bad blood - for them to ever truly be friends. she knows it’s not really her fault but she feels guilty all the same, and she wants to be better, to do better. than her aunt, her grandfather - even her mother. her olive branch comes in the form of offering to help derek rebuild the hale house. it’s never going to be the same, but it’s a start. and derek, while sometimes a little too proud for his own good accepts her help (if only for the sake of scott). theyre never going to be the best of friends, but they grow to respect one another and thats just as important.

it’s an undisputed fact that kira is too good for this world, she’s kind and pure and full of light. but she has the weight of her family, her legacy, her destiny weighing her down. and sometimes, sometimes she just wants to leave it all behind to run away and be her own person. and allison understand, she’s an argent, she’s a huntress by blood. she knows all too well what the weight of family feels like and so when it gets too much, theyll get into allison’s car and drive away from beacon hills. into the forest, the hilltop, the desert. theyll talk and talk and when it’s done and theyre both emotionally exhausted but content all the same, theyll drive back home, blasting music and screaming at the top of their lungs like the teenagers they are.

malia is suspicious by nature, years living in the wilderness will do that to a person, so its almost shocking just how quickly she takes to allison. at the end of the day, malia has always been good at reading people. she can always tell when they’re lying or they’re happy or sad. and for a while all allison does is exude sadness and guilt. at her actions, her family’s sins,  the role she played in hurting those she loves most. and malia gets it, she’s burdened with the blood of her family. she of all people understands what it’s like to want to rebel against everything your family stood for. it’s that deep understanding and empathy that brings them together, paving the way for their budding friendship.

theo underestimates allison. he figures it’d be easy to charm her away from scott and the pack, to play on the same weaknesses gerard had. afterall, shes done it before? he’s not prepared for her to punch him across the room and he’s definitely not prepared for her wrath when she finds out he’s hurt scott.

and finally i think allison would’ve loved what scott and the pack were doing, she was the one who came up with ‘we protect those who cannot protect themselves’ and i truly believe that she would’ve been at the front lines with scott helping him save people everywhere.
