Jace is already extremely protective over you on a normal day.

He knows that you can take care of yourself for the most part, but protecting people is quite literally his job.

When Valentine is around, Jace’s protectiveness goes up like six notches. He’s always by your side, making sure you stay a safe distance away from any conflict that may be arising.

When Valentine grabs you, threatening your life if Clary didn’t hand over the cup, Jace loses his mind. He has to be physically restrained from attacking Valentine.

Jace isn’t one to show emotion very often, instead choosing to bottle his feelings. However, when your life is on the line, he can’t help but get visibly frustrated and angry.

Jace grabs any weapon he can, shouting threats at Valentine and practically begging him to let you go.

When you’re finally a safe enough distance away from Valentine, Jace loses it. He almost kills Valentine before he escapes.

Jace is incredibly protective of you. He’ll kill anyone who ever threatens your life.

No matter how strong and capable you may be, Jace always pushes you behind him when you’re around any visible danger. He would never forgive himself if he let you get hurt.

While he may not always express it, Jace loves you so much and would quite literally die before he let anything bad happen to you.

Alec's family fixing his clothes for him when he's nervous...

...and somehow, I can't help but headcanon that he secretly enjoys it, and that it just might, indeed, have a very soothing and calming effect on him.

I mean, open displays of affection do not seem to be something that is especially valued amongst Shadowhunters. Maryse seemingly raised her children to be the perfect Clave soldiers / officers, and used (restrained) motherly love and approval as motivators for them to behave in accordance to the Clave's laws and customs.

She taught them to control their emotions and to believe that their very human and instinctive needs for unconditional warmth, closeness, touch, and affection were weaknesses that should be ignored, denied and pushed aside.

And, while Jace was the golden child whose exploits allowed him to slightly deviate from the rules without being blamed too harshly for it...

And Isabelle was more or less the rebellious child that was expected to challenge authority within reasonable limits from time to time...

Alec was expected to constantly show the example for his younger siblings - regardless of his own needs and wants - and never deviate from his parents and the Clave's ideals...

From what I understand, they'd go as far as holding him responsible for his siblings' behavior by making him believe that, as a future leader, it was his job to keep them in line.

Besides Jace and Alec allowing themselves to grab each other's hands, briefly pull each other closer, and sharing a mutual heartfelt pat on the back - a warrior's embrace between two parabatai - before meeting Magnus, Season 1 Alec didn't really appear to allow himself any public or open display of affection with others.

So, it's entirely possible that something as simple as "fixing clothes" - a gesture that has a very utilitarian side to it - became a way for the Lightwood family to physically show and express their love, support, and affection towards Alec without being too obvious about it.

And that, whenever people he loves spontaneously do step in to smooth out wrinkles and/or fix his appearance, Alec feels like they are paying attention to him and what he's going through; and caring enough to offer their help and support without him risking being punished for expressing a need for it.

Then, right after Alec finally takes the risk of letting himself be open and vulnerable with Magnus by voicing that he does have feelings that run rather deep (deeply enough for him to feel like he's losing his balance), that he does struggle with letting people in and healthily handling his emotions when he's stressed, that he's concerned that he doesn't know how to properly apologize to someone (since allowing himself to be emotionally open with another person is all very new for him) and that he's sincerely sorry for the way he took it out on Magnus and handled it when Magnus was only showing concern towards him and trying to help...

Magnus reassures him that he is forgiven, that he's actually doing great at apologies, and spontaneously reaches out to fix his crumpled collar for him, thus unwittingly offering him the old familiar Lightwood equivalent of "Don't worry, you've got this! I'm here for you, and I love you..." on top of it.

Alec, his siblings, and his mother all become a lot more "tactile" with each over the course of the series, as they all start acknowledging and expressing their more human, emotional side. I totally blame Magnus', Clary's, and even Simon's influence, BTW.

But, at the very beginning of the series, they were virtually never really shown hugging or embracing each other - especially around others - the same way they start doing more frequently after they meet with these outsiders that eventually become family, and start challenging their whole worldviews and beliefs.

Also, I find it interesting that the only two times that Alec was the one that chose to walk away from Magnus (willing to sacrifice his own heart and chance at happiness with him for other people's sake), and Magnus still decided to go after Alec afterwards (to either stop him from making the mistake of throwing his life away for the sake of duty; or to let him know that his father no longer paused a threat to their relationship / conveniently stop him from being killed by an army of demon)...

Well, once Alec finally realizes that it is safe and okay for him to go after what he truly wants, his first instinct is to firmly grab Magnus by the lapels of his coat, push himself forward until their mouths crash together, and continue to hold onto his clothes for dear life while they kiss.

Within the context where Alec would have been instinctively conditioned to associate his family touching and fixing his collar / clothes with something comforting - a way of silently letting him know that he is loved, that they care about what he's going through, that they have faith in him, that things are going to be okay, and that they are there for him...

Having Alec spontaneously go straight fo Magnus' own collar and grabbing onto it like that, might just scream something a bit closer to: "I want you, I need you, I love you, I'm so sorry I chose to leave despite how much I wanted to stay, but this - right now - this is how I truly feel about you. I've got you now, I promise... I'm here with you, for you, and I choose you, if you'll still have me."

And one of the things I absolutely adore about that "collar grab" is how careful Alec is with not throwing Magnus off balance by avoiding to aggressively pull him towards him.

He doesn't use his hold on Magnus' collar to pull him into his own physical space, but instead fully goes to meet Magnus where he stands.

Alec's elbows bend as he moves forward to close the gap between them, and he appears to use the point of contact where he's grabbing onto the lapels as an anchor to simply keep them both stable and grounded as he leans into the kiss.

Why is it so important that he's walking into Magnus' space rather than pulling Magnus towards himself?

Because, that way, Alec is allowing Magnus to comfortably take a step back at any time if the closeness between them is unwelcomed, or becomes too overwhelming.

Whether intentionally or not, in both instances, he hurt Magnus. Even though Magnus did dramatically interrupt Alec's wedding / save Alec's life before telling him that his father can't come between them again, there's no way for Alec to know how comfortable Magnus is going to be with being passionately kissed or touched by him at that moment.

So, while Alec doesn't shy away from going after what he wants and openly expressing it to Magnus; he's also offering Magnus the opportunity to physically let him know how far he's comfortable allowing him to go, and letting him set the right pace between them.

Alec is very assertive and generally comfortable taking the lead, but there is not a single dominating or controlling bone in his body when it comes to Magnus (in terms of seeking to dominate or control a partner in a relationship without said partner's consent or ability to express their own boundaries, just to be clear).

realizing that if my Wayland Shadowhunter!OC marries Jace, they have a last name problem.

she's the last Wayland & he's the last Herondale (until they find Kit). yeah, they could hyphenate, but I think that's only canonically happened w/Malec, partly because Magnus is a warlock.

now I'm also realizing that the Lightwood name (by itself, at least) will die out, bc Izzy's gonna be Isabelle Lovelace (pretty!). oof.

so I wanted to riff off of @alexanderlightweight's response to the Alec/Bow/Quiver/summoning meta post by @ralfstrashcan that I reblogged recently, but also I didn't want it to get lost in an increasingly long reblog chain, so I'm gonna quote and start over here:

my headcanon is that it's alec's shadowhunter ability like clary's rune ability and apparently the herondale ghost talking ability(??)

if we really want to take it a step further. we can even talk about how izzy has specially made weapons that have to be super tricky to use which means weapons ability

but that's just my brain. which made that one scene where alec goes back to the institute make no sense, to retrieve his bow because literally every other time he doesn't need to (they just wanted to give clace the training moment and set up the whole hodge thing)

1: I also think Alec's 'have to go get a bow' is just an excuse, but he's using it to a) get away from Jace behaving incomprehensibly & Clary being So Very Clary, AND b) to cover their tracks now that he's realized just HOW comprehensively his siblings are going to go off the rails in the next day or so. (And on a narrative level I really like the scene with Hodge so I'm glad it exists. 😅)

2: I headcanon that part of the reason Alec (& to a lesser extent but still noticeably so, Izzy) can get away with pushing so many Clave/Nephilim boundaries without actually getting deruned despite their parents being on Thin Fucking Ice™️ with well, everyone, is that they have inherited both Family Traits and that's valuable enough (especially after all the losses during and after the Uprising) that the Clave really really doesn't want to get rid of them.

(Similarly, there's some hope that Jace and/or his expected children might show signs of the Wayland traits coming to life again as they've died out otherwise. Obviously that goes a bit sideways once they finally pick up on How Very Herondale he is, but luckily he's Herondale so that's still a benefit.)

Truebloods: very literally truth-tellers. Variations on their skills include the ability to recognize lies, off the charts charisma when they are invoking what they believe to be the truth, and an ability to make the most awkward truths palatable to audiences that normally wouldn't want to engage with them. They were traditionally the guardians of the Soul Sword whenever it left the City of Bones, but that honor faded away over the years as the Council with the Consul/Inquisitor as heads centralized power in their own hands.

Izzy can be seen doing this during her trial, because even when her personal behavior has included digs & microaggressions against Downworlders, she believes that they as a people can and should do better and her speech clearly works in-universe because of that resonance of truth.

(She even occasionally manages the sincere/heart-felt clunky dialogue that works despite being clunky that Alec's so good at, and poor Jace doesn't, despite his best attempts, because for all he's a Lightwood in every other way that matters, he's not actually part Trueblood.)

Maryse has several hints of Alec's same blunt (inexplicably successful) sincerity once she lets herself stop hiding behind Politics & Expectations. When she's upset with Izzy about spending time with the Seelie in s1, she has a line that always felt very self-recriminating to me; (I'm paraphrasing here since I'm too lazy to pull up the script or episode): 'never trust a people who can't lie, they'll find more imaginative ways to stab you in the back'. She knows this about the Seelie because it's what she's always done.

(Alec's shock at his parents being in the Circle can't be because it's against their politics as they've never really tried to behave better. Perhaps it's because it never occurred to him that they could lie that well. Especially his mother, since he has a much better relationship with her than Robert.)

This means that Maryse buying into Valentine's rhetoric was invaluable to him, because she could back him up and help make sure people would fall for it, because she was a Trueblood. Equally, when she turns, that is part of why the Clave lets them back in. Her vow to now toe the party line is completely believable, because she promised on her children... who are also Truebloods.

This also means that their bloodline is one that would not always be popular since they can call out power when it's behaving badly; thus the apparent decline of Trueblood standing in the way that the show refuses to ever really acknowledge it in the present day timeline, and instead talks about Lightwood honor.

(But countered in the way The Clave doesn't move directly against Alec Lightwood, HotI, despite gay and living with a Downworlder, despite how much clear disdain he has for so many of them and their policies. They aren't willing to risk what a Trueblood could do if pushed into active rebellion.)

Lightwoods have a much more palatable martial gift. Their affinity for the adamas in their weapons means they can bond with them, sometimes strongly enough to summon them, manipulate them in the field, adapt them and rune them and enhance them in ways most Shadowhunters can't. (We never see anyone doing anything resembling Alec runing his arrows in s1 after all. What if most of them can't?)

As shown by Izzy in s3 as Weapon's Master, in Alec's ability to beat his parabatai (the supposed best fighter of a generation) when they're sparring with weapons even if he loses once they get to hand-to-hand, Izzy's unique skill with a whip, Alec fighting with everything he gets his hands on, from seraph blades to his signature bow to actual arrows for stabbing. (As seen in everything in ralf's original meta post and delightful fic.)

There's even something in the fact that Izzy was interested in joining the Iron Sisters (which while prestigious also involves even more sacrifice from a people who have to sacrifice a lot already and are thus vital enough that they let Cleophas join despite her past because they needed her) and yet Izzy stayed active duty -- and presumably eventually marriageable.

(I frequently wonder if part of why she chose to make herself as unpalatable as possible for a traditional/political match was a lingering bit of awareness that that was what The Clave most wanted from her, regardless of who she wanted to be.)

ALSO! There has to be a reason that Robert Lightwood was valuable enough to keep even when they got rid of Maryse, a reason the show reiterates Lightwood honor over and over again, a reason he & Maryse got to be co-Heads of an Institute (even if the general fanon that they were more constrained than most Proper Heads does fit what little we see), and we never actually see Robert fighting or sparring, but we are repeatedly told that his children are the best of the best.

But it's seldom mentioned as a compliment, is it? More like an expectation. They're Lightwoods, they have to be the best with their weapons, or what is the point of them? It's just another weight added to Alec's so-called crown, another expectation Izzy has to both flaunt and fight against every day so she can have at least a little bit of herself left to hold onto.

(The one thing Jace is good at, the one bit of the monster his father built that helps; he's as good with a blade as a Lightwood. It's the only thing that gives him hope for redemption, the only thing that gives him enough conviction to ask Alec to be his parabatai and protect his soul from himself.)

I feel like Peter wants to be so affectionate he just isn’t super sure how to go about it.

Your relationship is still a secret, so PDA isn’t really an option. He does, however, sneak into your room late at night during the guards’ shift changes.

He actually really loves to cuddle. At first, he was a little awkward because he didn’t have much experience but he eventually really warmed up to the idea.

He especially loves to hold you !! When he’s feeling a little overwhelmed or anxious, though, he’ll ask you to hold him, which is really nice because it means that he trusts you enough to be vulnerable.

The staff gets very little time outside, however he spends that time finding the prettiest flowers to pick for you. He’ll press them into a notebook and give it to you whenever he can.

He tends to show his love through acts of service. He’ll make sure that you have breakfast, he’ll organize your things for you, he’ll take your shift if you’re tired, etc. He likes to do little inconspicuous things like that for you.

He’ll also take the blame for anything you do wrong, which often subjugates him to hours of electric shock punishments, but he never regrets it. He’d rather take the blame for all your wrongdoings than let you get hurt.

He really likes to hold your hand. He’ll play with your fingers or rings, especially if he’s feeling anxious.

On some occasions, he takes the risk of falling asleep in your bed. He knows that he’ll have difficulty sneaking back to his room before morning, but he adores watching you sleep peacefully. He really enjoys quiet moments like that, it makes him feel more human.

He creates multiple plans to help you escape, even if he can’t come with you. You usually choose to stay, refusing to leave him behind, but the thought is incredibly appreciated.

He has a few books that he likes to reread to you whenever he can. Late at night, he’ll lay in your bed, one hand supporting his head and the other holding a book, while you lay quietly on his chest.

He always remembers your birthday !! Nobody really celebrates things like that in the lab but he’ll always make sure to have a small gift for you or extra time to spend with you on this day.

He lets you play with his hair !! It’s really a win-win because his hair is so soft that you could play with it for hours and he adores having his hair played with. It puts him to sleep so fast !!

Every now and then, when he’s feeling soft or is missing you, he’ll write you a little letter detailing how much you mean to him and he’ll slip it under your door.

He’s very caring !! He’ll always check up on you and make sure you’re doing okay.
