Jeff sighs in relief when he steps outside onto the terrace, the cold, fresh air a welcome reprieve.

It’s loud and bright out here, even at this time of night, and there’s no stars when he looks up, the light pollution stealing away the night sky.

He shivers against the cold when it seeps into his body, leans on the bannister before reaching into his pocket for the pack of cigs. He lights up and the first drag is heaven, the tension in his body slowly uncurling.

He doesn’t turn when the terrace door slides open and close again behind him, just prays that it’s a fellow smoker looking for a break. He catches the first wave of scent right before a smooth, low voice asks, “Got a light?” and Jeff straightens, turns to face the stranger, God, who smells fucking amazing.

It’s too earthy for an omega, too spicy for a beta, too—fucking good to be an alpha. Jeff inhales sharply, and mmmh, sandalwood, rain, wet and earthy, and something else, something almost sweet and heady that makes his mouth water and his teeth ache.

Unmated, too.

He’s almost taken aback when he drags his eyes up the man’s body, from expensive Italian leather, up long, long legs, bowed, a strong upper body, strong shoulders, all clad in a smart, tailored suit, open collared, to a face that’s—well Jeff’s not one for waxing poetic but devilishly handsome springs to mind, almost bordering on beautiful, strong, stubbled jawline, straight nose, green eyes sparkling with humor, and Heaven help him, the most sinful mouth he’s ever laid eyes on, that full lower lip just waiting to be kissed, bitten.

“Yeah,” Jeff rasps eventually, fishes out his lighter, leans in closer to light the stranger’s cigarette.

“Thanks,” he says and joins Jeff at the bannister.
