Jet hates his face. He can't stand to look at it. He always looks away from mirrors when he's in the bathroom or ignores his reflection completely whenever he walks past water.
He doesn't believe he's ugly, no far from it. Jet knows he's not from the way girls smile shyly whenever he talks to them. The way they giggle with flustered faces whenever they're in his presence. Smellerbee always rolls her eyes whenever he indulges a little in flirting with girls whenever they pass in a town.
No, Jet hates his face because he looks just like his mother.
His beautiful, caring mother. The one that would always kiss him goodnight after telling him stories of spirits or star-crossed lovers. She was a hopeless romantic jet remembers that. His mother who would coddle him and rock her in his lap after he came home crying, another one of the village boys picking on him for how small he was. Jet used to be quite scrawny and weak if his freedom fighters could believe that.
His mother, the one that protected him from the seething hot flames the best she could the day the fire nation came to their village. while his father did his best to hold the soldiers off. And when he failed to do so, held jet tight to her as she told him to run as far as he could and to never look back. Even promising him she'd be right behind him.
He didn't keep the promise of not looking back as Jet heard the wailing screams of his mother dying. Tears blurring his view of her as the last thing he saw of her was her eyes. Only to see her killer on a Komodo Rhino in front of him with a hatred he'd never seen before.
So now jet covers mirrors. And if he can't do that, he breaks them. Letting the glass shatter as his fist covers in blood. Not only does jet hate that he looks like his mother, but he has the same hatred in his eyes as her killer. Hatred for the fire nation and what it did to him, to his own people and others.
And the thought of the only reminisce jet has left of his mother being tarnished by seeing her face with hatred in her eyes, would kill him sooner than what was to become of him in ba sing se.

Hi! For the writing prompt, how about: "What happened doesn't change anything" for Jetko?
For this prompt game! (And also this one!)
(Can be read as a follow up to this prompt fill)
“What happened doesn’t change anything, you know,” Zuko says into the shockingly comfortable silence, grass tickling at his cheek as he tilts his head to eye Jet's face.
“No?” Jet asks after a beat, not looking as he passes over another leg of stolen pig chicken, cold and worse for wear for being shoved into a sack but somehow still just as good as anything Zuko’s ever had in the palace. “What’s not changing, then?”
“The tax structure is still full of loopholes that let corporate and private wealth mix,” Zuko says around a mouthful, ignoring manners for the first time in…a long time. “Lady Tang is still useless at best and corrupt at worst.”
“I know which one I’d put money on,” Jet snorts.
“Leadership structures are still completely disaggregated outside of localized enclaves, which makes cohesive solutions near impossible,” Zuko continues, ignoring him as familiar frustration sparks in his chest. “As evidenced by the ongoing banditry problems in the northwest—”
Jet grins, sharp and amused and looking rather pleased with himself as he pops a slice of moon peach into his mouth.
“—which all means that I’m still going to show up in Ba Sing Se next week to discuss renewing treating provisions,” Zuko says, words coming fast and hot and tight now, fire suddenly roiling in his chest, “And it’s still going to be the exact same conversation as the last time, and the time before that, because everything is still the same and nothing will have changed.”
“Hm,” Jet hums into the silence like Zuko's voice isn't ringing between them, lazily offering over a pilfered dumpling without taking his eyes off the stars. “Is that all?”
“I’ve barely even started,” Zuko bites out, snatching the unfortunately delicious dumpling out of Jet's hands and aware that his chewing can best be described as sullen as he transfers his glower up at the sky, frustration clogging up his chest and sinking claws into his gut, tangled and sticky and Agni’s tits but Zuko is so tired of trying again and again to move the exact same—
“It changed for those people, you know,” Jet says, idly twisting a stalk of grass between his fingers. “Those people in the village,” he adds when Zuko just frowns at him, confused. “A corrupt overseer like Ri Mei being gone?” Jet finally glances over, catching Zuko’s eyes. “That matters.”
“Until the next overseer shows up,” Zuko points out, because this is the fifth reported case of administrative mismanagement in four years in Lady Tang’s province—or, well, not reported, at least not officially, but—and Zuko knows how a situation like that breeds lion vultures.
“So it changes for a day, then,” Jet shrugs, eyes wandering lazily over Zuko’s face. “Some people have a few more coins in their pocket and a bit more food on their table.” He flicks the half-eaten dumpling in Zuko’s hand, pointed. “That’s still a change.”
“Does it even matter, though, if it keeps just going back to how it was?” Zuko asks, hearing the words coming too hot, frustration huge and knotted in his chest and about so much more than just this. “That village is still going to have to find more coins than they have, and give away more food than they can afford, and it’s going to be the exact same kind of person doing it to them.”
And Zuko is still going to be back in the Fire Nation. Pushing against stodgy traditionalists and talking himself hoarse for suspicious aristocrats. Clawing and bleeding, sometimes literally, for every inch and scrap and—
“I mean, you’re right back here, aren't you?" Zuko says before he can catch the words, frustration or maybe something else lashing outwards even though he tries not to do that anymore, he tries, but Agni, sometimes it's just too much. "With a band of kids—"
"There's some teens and young adults in there, too," Jet says, infuriatingly unconcerned.
"—calling them Freedom Fighters—"
"It's a catchy name."
"—and living in trees—"
"Well you get taxed on the ground."
"—ambushing passing carriages and—” Zuko snaps his mouth shut, Jet slowly raising his eyebrow when Zuko just keeps his lips pressed flat, fingers twisting into the grass as he tries to grab back his control.
“And?” Jet prompts when Zuko doesn’t continue, looking almost amused. “Don’t hold back. Keep going, let it out.”
“And so what’s changed?” Zuko bursts out before he even realizes he's given himself permission, almost a relief to voice it, the words coming out nearly desperate, pleading. “It’s been nine years and it’s still—it’s just—you’re still…”
“Doing the exact same thing, hoping this time it’s different?” Jet finishes after a moment, face aloof and vaguely smirking like none of this matters but the words quiet, level, almost unbearably soft.
“Yeah,” Zuko says after a beat, squeezing his eyes shut and sucking in a deep breath that barely fills the sudden emptiness in his chest now that his frustration has blazed through him. “That.”
“Maybe not,” Jet allows after a long moment, surprisingly easily, the grass rustling beneath him. “But these kids I have because they ran away from home.”
Zuko frowns, cutting him a sideways look, almost more wary to find Jet looking thoughtfully rather than angrily back at him.
“They left home,” Jet continues, catching Zuko's eye and going to pop his blade of grass into his mouth before seeming to realize it isn't wheat. “They didn’t have to go," he explains, giving Zuko a lopsided smile. "Their home isn’t gone.” He flicks the grass away, raising his eyebrows. “You think that doesn’t matter?” he adds, eyes drifting to Zuko’s scar, and Zuko swallows, suddenly not sure what to say.
“And hey,” Jet says, suddenly rolling onto his side toward Zuko, head propped up on his fist and expression almost curious as he looks down at him, “Do you think it doesn’t matter that we threaten audits now instead of drowning entire villages to drive the soldiers out?”
“Wait,” Zuko says, “Wha—"
“Or that Fire Nation citizens being formally subject to Earth Kingdom jurisdiction within Earth Kingdom territory doesn’t matter?” Jet continues over top of him, smirking when Zuko snaps his mouth shut in surprise again. “Or that tax assessors being compensated by the number of properties they assess in a quarter instead of as a percentage of the value of their assessments doesn’t change anything?”
Zuko blinks, startled. “You know about…”
“Everyone might not know that the Fire Lord nearly walked away from the second treaty renewals over that,” Jet says, amusement flashing over his face as Zuko winces at the memory, “But Xi Jing Port made plates with your face on it to commemorate the signing,” he says, dry and knowing, “So I’d say at least a few people noticed.”
“Ah,” Zuko coughs, feeling himself flushing despite his best attempts otherwise. “They, um. They made plates for a lot of people.”
“They did,” Jet hums, smirking at him. “I only smashed yours though.”
“…Uh,” Zuko says, eloquent.
“It was a very good likeness,” Jet explains, reaching over to drift his fingertips down the line of Zuko’s jaw. “Quite distinct.” Over the lower curve of his mouth. “Recognizable, one might say.”
“Ah,” Zuko says, clearing his throat a little. That...yeah. He did wonder…
“Every bit matters, Your Majesty,” Jet drawls, somehow managing to make the title sound both sarcastic and entirely sincere.
“…Yeah?” Zuko asks, shivering a little as his lips move against Jet's thumb, the sudden flare in his chest bright this time instead of raw, clean instead of tangled, edged with that familiar fluttering thrill.
“Yeah,” Jet says, smirk slow and thumb pressing just enough to make Zuko part his lips as Jet adds, soft, seductive, “You win the war by revealing one hidden secret firebender at a time, after all.”
It takes Zuko a moment to register the words, but when he does he lets out a startled burst of laughter, inner fire sparking bright in his gut. Jet grins down at him in answer, for a moment just as bright. Then he rolls up fluid and easy to straddle Zuko's hips, his gaze wicked and knowing when Zuko’s laughter cuts off just as abruptly as it started.
“And besides,” Jet purrs, bracing a hand next to Zuko’s head and leaning over him, slow and languid like he’s savoring Zuko under him just as much as Zuko is trying to cling to every bit of Jet’s weight over him like this again. “Can you really tell me,” he murmurs, Zuko caught in his half-lidded gaze, “That these moon peaches—” a cool slice of fruit suddenly pressing against Zuko’s mouth. “—don’t taste just a tiny bit sweeter—” gentle, insistent pressure, Zuko unable to do anything except part his lips. “—because we stole them back—” fruit sliding against his tongue and Jet’s fingers on his lips and Jet watching like Zuko is opening for something entirely different. “—from someone who was never supposed to have them in the first place?”
And Zuko can’t do anything but sigh his agreement, sweetness bursting over his tongue, clinging to Jet’s fingers, lingering on Jet’s lips bright and clean and edged with a familiar, fluttering thrilled when Zuko finally tugs him down to taste it.

Fic idea - Dai Li gets both of them (Jetko)
So what if the Dai Li took a look at 'Lee' saw the very golden eyes and black hair and went; "Huh, that sure doesn't looke like someone from the earth kingdom, does it?" and decide to imprison him. Iroh goes free, since he has less of the identifying features (grey hair, brown-ish eyes).
Iroh lets it happen, as breaking Zuko out of prison is more feasible than fighting a whole team of Dai Li agents in broad day light.
Meanwhile the two idiots get trapped together, while Iroh figures out a plan to get them free. Iroh runs into the Gaang and they team up to rescue Zuko and Appa.
What the two guys get up to in prison... let's leave it up for free interpretation. Maybe they fight (highly likely), maybe they get their frustrations out in other ways. Who knows. Either way, Zuko keeps up the lie about being 'Lee'.
Eventually they are freed. Zuko almost bursts a blood vessel seeing the Avatar, Jet freaks out about Mushi firebending a whole lot to get them out.
Jet, screaming: "I told you he was a firebender!" Zuko: "I know he's a firebender!" * trying to fight off Dai Li* "And so am I!" 🔥🔥🔥 Jet: "You lied to me?! Again?" 😱💀😡
The audacity of lying firebenders.

If the ember island players episode ever happens, will you include the original play narrative, one where they perceive Zutara but instead, Aang gets jealous of Katara. Maybe worse, Jet and Zuko. Considering whilst Zuko wasn’t exactly smitten, he did take somewhat of an interest in him. He did think he was handsome.
Good news is yes, I definitely am planning on adapting the Ember Island Players episode! However, while with most chapters that are a ways off I usually have a vague idea about what I want to stay the same and what I want to change, this chapter is one that has been more vague than others in my mind. This is because there’s so much plot I haven’t covered yet and I don’t know how differently all of that will affect the EIP plot.
I’ve definitely thought about leaving the Zutara implication scenes in, but again, there’s so much else that I have not covered yet in the overall story that I don’t know if it would make sense to include it as part of the play in this AU. There definitely still is an opportunity for jealousy there, especially with Zuko and Katara’s Southern Raider revenge spree happening not long before this (which results in them getting closer).
In regards to the Players adapting anything Jetko-related, initially, I was gonna say that I don’t know for certain if I would include that simply because the Fire Nation is so homophobic during this time period. However, now that I think about it, this could honestly be an interesting thing to explore - like maybe the play heavily queercodes both Zuko and Aang without stating it outright (kind of like Hays Code-era villains in real world media), and the audience knows clearly what’s being implied and laughs at it (bc homophobia). And maybe there’s some dramatic moment where actor!Aang and actor!Zuko are tragically killed off in front of each other (Bury Your Gays trope). I think that this portrayal would seriously shake both Aang and Zuko and make them even more anxious about the future than they already were.
I won’t say anything else because I am now thinking of a lot of interesting ideas on where to go with my adaptation of this ep that I had not previously considered, and I want to save them for when I get to writing the chapter itself :) Thanks for getting the wheels in my brain turning, anon!

Something interesting about this ATLA re watch that I’ve noticed is that a lot people in the fandom’s perception on the romance between Mai & Zuko is often completely skewed. And so is the perception of Mai as a character.
I’ve seen parts of the anti Maiko crowd cry that Mai is abusive, & I’ve seen some Maiko shippers argue that Mai is mean & that’s what Zuko needs - someone who doesn’t put up with his bullshit & calls him out.
I admit that I started to think maybe they bickered more than I recalled & that was their dynamic. It fits Mai’s aesthetic to be a bit mean, after all. But really? Other than “The Beach” which I haven’t gotten to in my re watch, where they get a little annoyed with each other before quickly making up, that’s not the dynamic at all.
The “I just asked if you were cold, I didn’t ask for your life story” scene that always gets taken out of context ends with Mai reassuring Zuko that he shouldn’t worry & hugging him!
Tumblr media
She’s actually incredibly understanding of Zuko’s admittedly dramatic but also genuine anxiety expressed in this scene about going home.
The other Maiko scene that I’ve gotten to in my re watch is the two of them having a romantic picnic, cuddling, & making out.
Tumblr media
Oh yes, she’s so snappy & mean here. Right.
I’m not saying that Mai can NEVER be mean - but it’s usually not directed at Zuko & if it is, it’s when they’re both getting on each other’s nerves. Sure she’s snarky, but she’s also got a sweet side that tends to often be reserved for Zuko.
I don’t actually even care if my ships are “healthy” so this isn’t a “everyone should ship Maiko because it’s so healthy” post. Everyone should ship whatever they want because it’s a free country. This is just a post discussing the canon versus fanon dynamic - & especially the canon versus fanon characterization of Mai because the difference is stark.
Mai is a snarky goth girl who hates the world, it’s true, but I think it makes her more interesting & three dimensional to remember that she absolutely does have a soft side.

Toxic Jetko and Sokka Kills Ozai really intrigue me! (although the Sokka Kills Ozai one intrigues me more) 👀
I’ve answered Sokka Kills Ozai so here’s some Toxic Jetko!!
This is basically my version of the short whirlwind relationship they would have had in Ba Sing Se if Jet hadn’t seen Iroh bending his tea. Uhhh loosely based on some of my own shitty dating experiences for ✨realism✨. They break up eventually and then Zuko doesn’t see Jet again until the fight that gets Jet taken by the Dai Li. Also Zuko is trans in this one.
“So…” Iroh began as Zuko washed the dishes. This conversation might be easier for them both if they weren’t facing each other. “That nice young man Jet was here today…”
Iroh could see the tension fill his nephew’s shoulders at the mention of the name.
“I’m sorry, Uncle. I… asked him not to come.” I wasn’t ready for that. The words remained unspoken but they were clear to Iroh all the same.
Iroh was careful in choosing his next words. They were monumentally important for his nephew to hear at this time in his life, but what they implied- and what they implied Iroh knew- was dangerous.
He thought about the way Jet had leaned into Zuko as they ate their meal, the controlling way Jet had grabbed Zuko’s hand as they sat beside each other and the hurt look Zuko gave as he pulled away. Iroh was sure Zuko had talked about his expectations of their time in the home with the other boy beforehand, and could see the limitations were not being respected.
Iroh didn’t care for Jet at all. He could see the intentions behind the boy’s calculated moves, but he could also see the feelings Zuko had for him. Was it possible Jet reciprocated those feelings? Yes. But there was more to the boy than met the eye.
He didn’t want Zuko hurt.
“You feel things deeply, Nephew. You deserve so much. But you must remember that you don’t need to waver in your principles to earn affection. You will always have those who love you.”
Zuko froze at the sink, teacup dropping into the basin. Iroh froze as well. He’d said too much. And somehow not enough.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” came the low reply.
“Zuko. Remember who you are.”
Without a look back in his direction, the boy steamed his hands dry and stormed out of the room, slamming the door shut behind him.
Iroh could only sigh in disappointment.

Chapter two of The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows is up!
Jet nods. “I like the city. I like the bustle and meeting new people– not too many new people to meet in Gaipan, not that I was trying to meet anyone new there. But sometimes, I miss this. Being up high. And the quiet, just the sounds of the forest. I’ve never lived anywhere with so few trees.”   Gaipan. Zuko can’t be certain he’s ever heard of it before. Most of his knowledge of the Earth Kingdom comes from the coastal towns, the colonies, and the prominent cities. He’s traveled much of it, but couldn’t say where he’s been; most has been on foot, just knowing to head east and then north, inward and towards theoretical safety.    “Why’d you leave?” Zuko can venture a guess; likely the same reason as every other refugee that has flowed into the city. No one leaves their home without there being no other option.   For a moment, his mind drifts to the palace gardens, and the tranquility of the turtleduck pond.   “I think–” Jet starts, and then stops suddenly. He’s frowning; not upset, but deep in thought. “I think that something bad happened. Something I did.” His frown deepens, and he shakes his head before quickly saying, “But that’s in the past, right? Doesn’t matter anymore.   Not for the first time, Zuko lingers there, on the strangeness of what Jet has said. The glossing over and brushing off of a memory outside of his grasp. How untroubled he is by it.

Jetko fic rec list
Feel free to add your own recs, and if you do read any of these and like them, comment something nice on it! If I find anyone hassling authors for updates I will drop ferrets down your chimney!
Modern AU
the things we leave behind - Mai and Ty Lee start a ghost hunting channel; their roommate, Zuko, cannot stand their new cameraman, Jet. Meanwhile, Zuko's sister just moved into their shared house, and forms a reluctant bond with Zuko's friend, Katara. Multiship, rated M, 200k, complete, HIGHLY recommend (also check out the rest of the author's works! She's amazing!)
never believed in meant to be - Zuko gets in-school suspension and meets Jet, who's cool enough they spend the day together. It's their first and last meeting. Rated T, 5k, complete. (Check out the rest of this author's stuff too!)
you're built to fall (beautiful) - in between the struggles of figuring out life as sixteen-year-old caretaker of kids, Jet finds himself falling in love with a handsome merman. rated T, 8k, complete. Amazingly written <3
paint it red, they'll cover it up anyway - Jet and Zuko are both kindergarten teachers, and both dealing with a lot of complications in their life. and in love. Rated T, 34k, in-progress
Ba Sing Se
up in the city (until the stars lost the war) - canon divergent AU where Jet doesn't see Iroh heat the tea, and Zuko's a little more receptive to city life. Absolutely gorgeous series. Rated T, 50k, in-progress
(Dont) Lose yourself into me - another canon divergent AU! Featuring rebel shenanigans, betrayal and angst all laid out beautifully. Check out the author's other works too, there's some really good ones! Rated T, 80k, in-progress
clay kids - after a misunderstanding about Zuko's - or rather, Lee's - parentage, he and Jet form a relationship built on lies of omission. Rated T, 35k, in-progress
a lesson in new beginnings - the author's summary probably says it best: 'zuko has bad coping skills, jet has a hella crush, and war is hell. welcome to ba sing se.' Very sweet with plenty of angst, drama, and misunderstanding. Rated T, 6k, in-progress
Post-canon
Like The Fire In Your Heart - Zuko's carriage is ambushed by thieves, and he finds that his old friend Jet isn't as dead as certain playwrights would have him believe. Rated M, 9k, in-progress
Miscellaneous
learning how to use a weapon (& other such tragedies) - flood-based apocalypse au! Beautifully written, possibly one of the first jetko fics I read when I was first starting to like Jet as a character. Rated G, 11k, complete
heat and sand - by the same author as above, au where a race of winged beings live among humans, and wouldn't you know it, they're not exactly welcomed by the likes of Ozai. Zuko finds himself taken in by Jet and his freedom fighters. Rated G, 16k, two completed fics. Honestly check out the rest of the author's catalogue it's all A+
Hearthfire- Jet is taken prisoner by the Fire Nation after his village burns. Rather than be put to work or executed, he becomes the young Prince Zuko's ward and they form an unlikely relationship. rated T, in-progress, 41k, covers canon books 1-3.
Perpetual - Jet, not quite mid-redemption arc, kills a firebender. Zuko can't actually die. Jet decides to make this his own problem. Rated M, 180k, in-progress <3
Sthe song in the secret room - haha second lesbeanlatte work on here 😈 a modern/time travel au based off of the Disney channel show Secrets of Sulphur Springs, if it were PG-13 and involved gator-related manslaughter. Hilarious and heart-wrenching 💚 Rated M, 280k, complete
Some further additions found in this reblog
This list will probably get updated if I remember any more or read anything new. And not to shamelessly self-promote but I have a variety of jetko works of my own, linked here if you're interested at all. :)

[ Do NOT be deceived. Zuko's guards ARE on orders to let him in for booty calls. ]
post-canon jetko. Zuko isn't a rail-thin angry refugee anymore. Jet isn't hurting as bad as he did. He even finds himself new purpose after the war - hunting down still-rogue Fire Nation mercenaries and war criminals, housing orphans, and being occasional bounty hunter for hire (he's not as good as June, but he has his ways). And, of course, hitching a ride on the ship taking the Earth King's diplomatic embassy to the Fire Nation. The Avatar may have refused to kill the new Firelord if he steps out of line, but that doesn't mean Jet wouldn't. It's his job to go over there from time to time and remind certain people of this. If he so happens to have almost-civil discussions and intercourse with a head of state when he does so, that's purely incidental, and does not distract him in the slightest.
Tumblr media
full pic ;]
[ Jet really DID visit Zuko's chambers with the intention of debriefing with and analyzing him, this time. To see if he could manipulate some more aid out of him, maybe, (Jet could play him like a fiddle, it wasn't hard,) or to wheedle him for lodgings and food for himself, or to see someone that he knew was just as restless as he was, regardless of peacetime, regardless that he shouldn't still feel like that. However, he caught Zuko right after he had a... meeting. With an Earth Kingdom noble. And, well... when you grow up deprived you learn you don't turn down leftovers. Or sloppy seconds, as it were. ]

Chapters: 5/5 Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Jet/Zuko (Avatar) Characters: Jet (Avatar), Zuko (Avatar) Additional Tags: Pre-Relationship, Jet has a Teahouse, Zuko is undercover, Industrial espionage Summary:
“The fuck,” Zuko said under his breath not believing what he was reading and finally giving in to his despair. He hadn’t even ordered one of the teas and he still had the backside of the menu to read through but he was already at the end of his tether… Was this the tea that had managed to travel to Ba Sing Se? The one that had Uncle Iroh’s envy start? If yes, then he was awed because right now, after having travelled all the way here to this tiny village, one simple piece of paper had crushed Zuko’s will the way crushed beetle bug heads gave flavour to the tea of the couple who were sitting across from him.
Fire Lord Zuko commits industrial espionage on a tiny teahouse at the behest of his Uncle. Jet gets into fighting mode because of firebender miasma in the air.
Finally, my Jetko fic is complete and that just when the Netflx series came out. Come and enjoy two edgy boys making up after Jet suffered through severe injuries in Ba SIng Se and Zuko suffered through bad tea names.
