Thank u so much!! Talking about books is one of my favorite things!

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

There’s def a lot more books that I was expecting to love that I didn’t this year than the opposite (though majority of the books I read were ones I expected to like and I did, but that’s exactly what I expected lol).

Two books I tried on recommendation that I otherwise wouldn’t have picked up on my own and ended up loving are

The Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu. This one I tore through in like two days. Really cool post cataclysm setting, where things are both familiar but also just slightly off in an unnerving way. There’s some genuinely creepy scenes that really worked for me. And while I find the educational magic aspect of this book to be the least interesting part of the story, I do like it’s conflict with the MC’s Zimbabwean magic and how she is seen as lesser for having not been “properly schooled” but also desperately wanting to be seen as a proper spellcaster. The overall mystery was easy to guess (I knew who the big bad was the moment they were introduced, and what their motives were) but I wanted to read on to find out I was right. And I was right.

Wendy, Darling by A.C. Wise First off, retellings are a hard sell for me, and I don’t like Peter Pan that much to begin with. I read this one bc the rec was so unexpected, but I honestly really enjoyed this. It’s a strong feminist take and explores the ways gender roles constricted both men and women in the early 1910′s. I also enjoyed Peter Pan being the villain, as a boy who gets literally everything he wants. I liked Neverland’s personification, and how it ends up being a living breathing character of its own. It’s a really neat use of the genre of fantasy that I enjoyed.

20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?

This year I barely read 2022 releases and with one exception all 2022 releases I read were part of series I was already reading.

A Prayer for the Crown Shy by Becky Chambers. I really like this series. It’s warm and emotional, with wild robots living in nature and an overall utopian setting that I can only hope will be our future. This one expands upon the worldbuilding Chambers establishes in book one, this time exploring various human settlements. I overall liked this one about the same as I liked book one and I think it’s a worthwhile contribution to the series. My only criticism is I believe this is also the last book in the series, and it doesn’t feel finite. The MC’s conflict from book 1 still remains unresolved, but maybe this means they’ll be a book 3?

Hooked by A.C Wise. A sequel to Wendy, Darling. After being blown away by book one, I was excited for this one, particularly because Hook’s absence from book one suggests some intriguing things never explored in book one. I was ultimately let down by this. Everything I really liked about book 1 didn’t carry over into this one. I also would’ve preferred this one to only follow Hook’s POV, rather than bringing the Darlings back into the story again, which forced Wendy and Jane to have the exact same issues and character arc as book one.

I think this book has something to offer to hardcore Peter Pan fans. There’s some interesting ideas but it didn’t hit the same as book one, which make me sad.

Dreams Bigger than Heartbreak by Charlie Jane Anders. I liked this one better than book one. Book one was okay, but compared to Anders’ adult fiction, it didn’t have the same edge I really like about her work. Understandable, this is her foray in YA and I can tell she intentionally wants to give positive space adventures to a cast of LGBT characters. I think that goal makes this series important.

Whereas I think book 1 had a hard take off, book 2 really thrived with multiple POVs allowing the story to take place in vastly different parts of the universe and expanding upon the worldbuilding in a better way than “We’re confined to this traveling ship, so let me just tell you about these various aliens and cultures without seeing their homeworld.” I felt better immersed in this book, as well as came to appreciate the cast of characters better while being able to experience the story through their POV, rather than solely the main character’s.

Also, this book leaves off in a really neat place which makes me eager to read book 3.

Also also the narrator for the audiobook is the VA for Princess Bubblegum and I could not unhear it while listening to the book lol

The one exception

Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. This one just wasn’t for me. Bringing a cozy mystery into a fantasy setting is a really cool idea that I’m sure many readers will enjoy, and honestly I can see this being the start of a new trend. This was a pleasant read, as it’s intended to be. It’s lacking in world building. I think all fantasy elements could be removed and the story would remain the mostly the same. I also was hoping for some mutual pining between the two main characters, rather than the romance aspect being put off until the end when they finally get together (if I didn’t know it would feature a wlw relationship at its center, I probably wouldn’t have picked up on their attraction towards each other at all). And this last criticism is just a cozy mystery thing, but the lack of tension. A problem would be introduced, the MC would try to fix it and it worked, the problem was resolved. Rinse and repeat until the book concludes. It honestly left me bored. But I can understand why so many people like it, especially if they want a gentle book with the guarantee that everything is going to be alright.

Regarding the ZADR issue

Hey guys, so about the whole zim being an adult issue, I wanted to share my thoughts really quick. At first I wasn’t going to since I basically just got here and I only enjoy shipping adult zim with adult dib anyway, but I have technically been part of the fandom since I was a kid, and it’s very saddening to see how distraught some people are right now, so I’m hoping maybe my take can help ease some worries.

I talked with a friend about it so here’s what I said to them:

“i’m honestly a little shocked from some of the reactions i’ve been seeing bc like.... this isn’t the first time jhonen has said zim isn’t a kid, he said so in the commentary for the show, this isn’t new news

like guys, we been knew zim wasn’t a kid. even then its basically exactly like making an anime loli a 1000+ year old demon like for characters, demeanor and appearance says way more about age than factual age, and like ???? for adult fans of the show we already only ship adult ZADR, and for KID fans of the show, whats wrong with kids enjoying a kid ship????? like you’re really gonna slap a comfort ship out of the hands of a 13 yr old bc the nonhuman character that goes to school and hangs with kids and looks and acts like a kid isn’t technically a kid? its a cartoon fam like chill, the vast majority of fans that ship underage zadr are underage themselves, not p*dos fjkghfgjkgfjkhkj

like i get it man so many people are hurt by p*dophilia and the perpetualism and normalization of p*dophilia in media but kids wanting cartoon characters to kiss each other isn’t where these issues are stemming from

i wish things could be more black and white instead of endless speculation and arguing but society is not simple, and i UNDERSTAND their upset i REALLY do, the angry ones have every right to be angry, i just wish they didn’t attack other fans who have no ill intentions dfjgjhg they’re not the enemy!! but i do see these massive types of fights sort of like growing pains while we as humans learn and educate each other about ethics and the extremely convoluted ways that ethics are compromised, people being so anti p*do is still such a better sign than people (and kids!!) thinking things like actual extreme age gaps in romance media is acceptable and desirable

the premise of the show itself is terribly silly!!! and in no way based on fact or any relevant logic!! the whole show is a joke the lore is a joke its all a big ball of gags!!!!”

I know this a little all over the place but my point is this: the whole issue is a terribly slippery slope, made a hundred times more complicated by the fact that cartoon logic does not translate easily to real life logic, and while I think acknowledging and discussing it is a good thing, I do not think that underage fans continuing to ship zim and dib as they are depicted in the show is wrong, and I do not think that these fans need to tear themselves up and doubt themselves and feel that they’re terrible for liking a ship that they had no idea included a quote on quote “adult” character.

nobody is required to enjoy anything they don’t wish to enjoy and everyone is allowed to form and stand by their opinion. constructive speculation and challenging ideas is GOOD, but making people, especially kids, feel like shit about themselves in regards to these topics is not okay! attacking others is not okay!! if you want to change someone’s mind, you can be angry and still be civil, and if you can’t change their mind, block them! if you hate and are made uncomfortable by specific content, blacklist it! sending hate messages is never the answer and only spreads conflict, it does not solve anything.

underage fans in any fandom only have the responsibility of taking care of themselves, being safe, and being kind to each other. this issue should not fall on them to analyze. ADULT fans in any fandom are the ones responsible for being aware and sensitive to current issues, and it is our job to make sure we distribute content that is not harmful, keep adult content confined to adult spaces, and speak out against other adults who are behaving dangerously. OUR JOB. NOT THEIRS. adults who enjoy and are comforted by the show enjoy wholesome and canonical content of the canon characters, and relate to and ship adult versions of the characters. if adult fans are shipping and sexualizing the canon characters in the first place, that’s an actual red flag. if underage fans are shipping and sexualizing the canon characters, they’re relating to them, and there’s nothing wrong with kids wishing to explore romance with other kids and kid media. zim does not read as an adult. anyone who watched the show with no further knowledge of the lore believes zim is a kid. there is a clear line within the show between adult characters and kid characters. slapping an age on a character doesn’t make them read as that age, and suddenly learning that a character is a vastly different age than what you thought they were doesn’t necessarily change how you feel about them. spongebob is a grown adult with a house and a job. would you date him??? would you date spongebob squarepants??? HUH? I DIDN’T THINK SO. don’t make kids fucking hate themselves because they’re attached to a cartoon character. fuck.

and for those who feel discouraged and targeted by Jhonen himself, don’t be. Jhonen has said some things and had some attitude problems towards fans in the past, but the instance that slighted ship fans in particular was over six years ago, and we should keep in mind that Jhonen was having problems with fans overstepping his boundaries and asking him questions like ‘how does it feel knowing thousands of fangirls would love to tie you down and r*pe you.’ I’m hoping that with the magic of communication through the modern internet he’s changed some of his opinions, but I do not think that he had any ill intent releasing this tweet, I believe he was simply interacting with the fans and sharing a fun fact. and if support from the creators comforts you, please remember that the voice cast, particularly Richard Horvitz and Andy Berman (voices of zim and dib), have absolutely no problem with fans enjoying zadr, and have done things like make zim and dib puppets smooch each other and say ‘I love you zim!’ in dib’s voice, all to make the fans happy. I highly recommend watching the live script reading of mopiness of doom and listening to the nickelodeon podcast that interviews Richard, Rikki and Melissa (zim, gir and gaz). in the podcast they talk about how much it means to them that fans are so touched by the show and is incredibly uplifting and heart warming.

so that’s all guys. bottom line, be kind to each other, decide for yourself how you feel, and don’t worry too much, especially if you’re a teen, you’re still growing and learning and I’m so proud of you for wanting to do the right thing. to my fellow adults, lets keep making wholesome content, keep protecting the kids, and keep being good examples of human beings.

FINALLY A KUN REQUEST!! this is one of my favorites please enjoy and don’t let me flop!!

let’s start w the basics…

major: linguistics

minor: comparative literature

extracurriculars: book club

other: literally writing his own novel??

school life

kun is such a good student

he always does his work on time and tries to get ahead when he can

he’s a plug too

he'll even do his friends’ readings and summarize it for them if they have a particularly busy week

he doesn’t allow himself to be used though

he just loves and appreciates his friends so much and wants to help them be successful when there are things they cant control that can get in the way of that

kun really enjoys his studies

his required courses are really stimulating and keep him on his toes

he loves leaving class every day feeling like he’s one step closer to understanding where language comes from and why we communicate the way we do

kun’s passion for linguistics sprouted from his adoration of reading

he’s a member of every book he could find on campus

he firmly believes the more you read, the more perspectives you’re able to see, which in turn, makes you a generally more enlightened and compassionate person

kun loves reading and language so much that he decided to just write his own book over the summer for fun

he sent a “very rough draft” to a local publisher

just for experience

and to get him used to rejection in case he ever wants to seriously pursue a career in writing someday

but now he’s fucked because

they actually liked it??? so he kind of has a book deal now??

which he was not expecting at all

there were a lot of comments for him to address as he expected

and the first one he decided to deal with was the lack of a love interest for his protagonist

except there’s only one problem with that

he has no idea how to successfully write for a love interest

so he does what any normal young writer would do to get inspiration

and goes to the university’s monthly speed dating event in the quad

early stages

you had been “too single for too long,” according to your best friend

and the only way you could get them to shut up about it was if you attended one of the school’s speed dating nights

and you decided it was worth the trouble, and made your way to the quad to get this over with

you had exactly two and a half minutes with every person you’d “date”

and for the most part, those two and a half minutes couldn’t go by fast enough

after talking to other students who only cared about football, trucks, and battlestar galactica, you were about ready to up and go

but your second to last “date” changed your mind

his name was kun

“alright this is gonna go by quick, so i’m gonna take the reigns if you don’t mind,” he spoke

he was oddly productive

you nodded

“great!’ he smiled. “any hobbies?”

“well, i love to read an-”

“reading? me too! what genres are you into?”

a wide smile stretched across his smooth face and his pupils dilated noticeably UGH CUTIE

“i mean, i like fantasy, historical fiction, biographies, science fi-”

“no way! me too!” he interrupts. “i just like all books so much!! i’m writing my own actually!”

you thought that was mighty impressive and asked him what his book is about

and he told you he can’t disclose that information because of his publishing deal

and youre like,,,, wA i T.. PUBLISHER?? THAT’S SO COOL!!

and he goes, “thank you! maybe you’d like to come and read it sometime when it’s finished.”

you couldn’t help but blush and turn your head away

and that’s when you noticed you only had ten seconds left on the stopwatch

you hurriedly seized the pen the event organizers had left on the desk and grabbed kun by the wrist, taking him by surprise and causing a slight gasp to escape his lips

you messily scribbled your number onto his forearm

and as soon as you had finished writing your digits, the timer rang

as you both departed from the table, kun shouted at you from a distance “how am i supposed to read this chicken scratch?!”

you shot him a smile playfully and shouted back

“text me!”

you didn’t receive a text that night

or the night after

but the night after that, your phone dinged as soon as you hopped out of the shower

“hey! this is kun from the speed dating thing. i hope this is the right number. i’ve already texted three wrong people and have had to explain myself to each of them. it’s really embarrassing. please confirm if this is you!”

you sent him a simple “:)” in response

“so does that mean you’re down to get a coffee with me tomorrow?”

“:)”

the next morning, you had the first of many, many morning coffee breaks outside the school library

these quick little meetups usually concluded with a quick sift through the library, where you’d each recommend each other your favorite books and read the prologues to each other over a hot cup of coffee

at first, the librarians used to kick you out for having drinks inside, but now youre clever and just hide your cups under your jackets

this became a weekly occurrence

and then it started happening twice a week

and now you basically see kun every other day

he even managed to get you to join the biographical book club with him, something you’d be way too nervous to do before meeting him

kun was such a good guy

you knew he was smart and funny and you knew he was caring and fun to be around

but what you didn’t know is that he had been smitten with you from the second you scribbled your number onto his arm

one day, as you were studying for your last final of the semester, you got a call from kun

you sent him the automated response, “sorry, i cant talk right now”

but he called right back anyway

“what is it?” you answered

“i’m sorry if you’re studying but this is super important and im so excited and i just have to tell someone!”

“what’s up kun?”

“my book! it’s finished! and i finally added in the love interest like the publishers asked!”

“I’M SO PROUD OF YOU BITCH

“finish studying! then we can facetime and i can read you a chapter!”

and so for the next thirty nights (even over your winter break), you and kun would facetime so he could read you a chapter until the book was finished

and you’d give him pointers at the end of each one so he could go back and revise once you had gone to sleep

the plot was incredible, honestly

the protagonist was a divorced middle-aged man whose wife left him for being too aggressive and absent-minded all the time

in the divorce, the wife got full custody of their teenage son

but when she goes on a business trip, the protagonist gets to watch the son

however, when he goes to pick the son up to take him to his house, hes nowhere to be found

so the novel follows this poor guy trying to find his missing son

but no one seems to be listening to him, so hes losing his mind

he’s working alongside the police and falls for the dci leading the investigation

and basically in the end it turns out he’s schizophrenic and his wife and son never existed at all

all of this was in his imagination

and he had just been showing up to the police station every day like a crazy person

kun did so much research for that

he even got the accuracy of his portrayal of a schizophrenic checked by his pal psych major!jungwoo

on the night kun finally finished reading to you

you were sh0000000000000k like what the fuck all that trouble for it all to be fake?? genius kun!!

so he asked for your feedback on the development and personalities of all his characters

you complimented him on how well he portrayed the dci

they weren’t your typical love interest

they were headstrong and witty and educated

and they were determined to help the protagonist find his son when no one else was listening to him

“you like them?” he asked you

“yes! they were so different than i had expe-”

“i was hoping you’d like them. i was inspired by you.”

your heart BURST!!!

“KUN THAT’S SO SWEET!”

and that’s when he explained to you why he went to speed dating to begin with, and told you he was so glad to have met you

because you were the “perfect muse”

and then he asked if you’d like to be his s/o

and of course

you said yes bc duh?? he’s kun??

relationship

kun is the cutest bf ever!!!

nothing has really changed between you two

you still have library and car dates

but now you hold hands sometimes

and when kun is feeling extra bold, he gives you a peck on the cheek

you guys have such a cute and innocent relationship

you can often be seen together on the campus quad where you met for the first time, you in kuns arms, him tickling your stomach to make you giggle

he’s so sweet and is so considerate of your needs

out of all the boys, he’s hands down the one most likely to change for you if you guys hit a rough patch

he always pays for food

which kind of ticks you off because what if one day he goes broke

but all he really cares about is your happiness and satisfaction

and he really just wants you to know that no one loves you quite like he does

and he tells you every day how grateful he is to have you in his life

How many times a day do you check your cell to see if you have a text? Considering my dumb phone doesn't let me know I have texts half the time, I do multiple times throughout the day. Ever wonder if the person you hate will become the person you marry? HA HA YOOOOOOOOOOOO SARA AND I DID AND NOW I DEADASS WANNA MARRY HER TOMORROW How many times a day do you wash your hands? It varies. After I use the bathroom or if I'm about to touch food. You walk in on your parents smoking pot, what do you do? lol h u h How old were you when you had your first crush? Hell if I know. I do remember as a young kid though, I was very much "ew boys no thnx." Maybe like... 5th grade? When was the last time you asked God for something? A long, long time ago. Your opinion on smoking: Just don't, dude. It's money going towards gradual suicide. No one likes the smell. You sure won't like how it affects your body. It's an addiction/it's stressful to stop. I'm not gonna like, judge you if you smoke, but nevertheless, I'll tell anyone it's an awful idea. Make love or fuck? It depends on the mood. I was more into the former mood back when that even applied to me, though. Have you ever cried so much over something that later felt like nothing? Oh, I can assure you I have. The last time you were afraid of the dark was: I'm not really scared of the dark, but one time I got up semi-recently in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, and after one incident, I was so, so careful and nervous to step on Bentley's tail. He lost his fucking mind on me when I did it once, of course on accident. The TV was off by this point, so I couldn't see well at all. I love having a dog that fucking scares me. How often do you say I love you to your parents and mean it? A whole lot. Your boyfriend/girlfriend say they can’t hang out & it’s been two weeks. You? I mean sure, it sucks, but if they're legitimately busy, they're busy. Have you ever wanted a wild animal for a pet? If yes what animal? I had a phase where I really wanted a fox, and now I am DEAD serious about fostering opossums at some point. When you go to sleep, do you have to have white noise or silence? SILENCE. Though I don't really get /total/ silence 'cuz I have to have my fan on. My room's always hot. Have you ever gotten in a fight with a teacher? No. Ever had a creepy dream about a teacher? No. Where were you when you had your first sleepover? Your house or a friends’? I believe I was at my then-best friend's house. I had suuuuch bad separation anxiety from my mom that I know I was older than most kids who did. What are you limits for doing stuff for money? I'd never do sexual favors or seriously hurt someone for it. Is there someone you are mean to all the time for no reason? No. I'll admit I'm typically rather short with Bentley, but Jesus, do I have reason. When you think of love what’s the first that comes to mind? Sara. How do you calm your mind and find peace when you are stressed? My best bet is going to sleep; that's pretty much, usually, my reset button. Have you ever given someone flowers? I gave Jason flowers once or twice. I gave my mom some for Mother's Day as a kid. How often do you get on Facebook? A couple times a day... mainly just to see memes lmaoooo. What day of the week is usually your busiest day? Good Lord, Tuesdays. I'm at school for 13 hours. Mostly sitting in the library waiting for classes, but. I do study a whole lot, though, and it's when I get a bunch of schoolwork done. Is there a place that you will never return back to? Idk. When was the last time that you created a PowerPoint? I'm actually working on/off one for FYS 'cuz we have to do this "Lifeline" thing where we introduce ourselves and give our stories. Guess who's not fucking ready. Do you like group work? NO. NO. Yep. How many relationships have you been in that lasted less than a year? Four. Where were you going the last time you were on a train? Never been on one before. Do you think having a bad temper is a sign of immaturity? I mean, no? It's an interesting question and I guess a "maybe," but. I feel this depends on the trigger. Have you ever been significantly more physically fit than you are now? I was a fucking yoga master babe in 9th grade, fuckin fite me. When growing up, did your parents keep the house very tidy? I guess? It wasn't dirty. How many watches do you own? Zero. Are there any ways in which you greatly differ from everyone else in your family? Political views, I guess? Or the fact I'm bi? I only know of one person in my extended family that's gay. Should teenagers be allowed to have their cell phones with them in class? No shit? Emergencies are a thing? BUT, respect the teacher, please. I cannot stand people using their phone in class, especially here in college. You're paying a shitload to learn. Spend that time as you're supposed to. Take education seriously. If your phone's on vibrate for said emergency situations, that's cool. Do you have any gay relatives? Lol oh. Yeah, Mom has a cousin. Have you ever had to have a pet put down? Yeah. Have you unfollowed, deleted, or blocked anyone on social media recently? I deleted my sister's mother-in-law in fury over her homophobia because I've seriously had it, then just a few days ago actually I went through my Facebook list deleting people I just didn't really feel connected to/didn't really care to follow their journey anymore. How many cups of coffee do you typically drink per day? Zero. Do you know what your vocal range is? It's not broad. I'd say I'm probably in a rank slightly lower than most women. What’s the biggest financial mistake you’ve ever made? I've never really been in the position to be capable of that. I've never had a source of income. If so, what sub-genres of metal do you like the best? Probably heavy. Or symphonic, though I haven't found too many artists in that sub-genre that I really enjoy. But BOY, when I do? I will BINGE that shit to the ends of the earth. Have you ever turned down someone who didn’t handle the rejection well? Ha ha oh man, I remember in 4th grade, this kid Nick was desperate to date me. It was endearing and cute, but he asked kinda obsessively. Then jfc, when I broke up with Tyler, you would've thought I was Jason and he was me, holy shit. How large is your largest scar, and what is it from? Well, I can't see it, so I actually don't know. I guess kinda long, but not wide. It's from a cyst removal surgery. Who was the last person you sincerely thanked? Omg, my Writing teacher. She really liked my writing on my essay. I was so flattered. When was the last time you went for a walk? Like, just a casual walk for the sake of walking? Not since I was at Sara's last. That was when my muscle atrophy was starting to get extremely bad though and I was very close to death omg. Have you ever been in a relationship where there was a large difference in maturity levels? I don't think so. When cooking a meal, do you clean up as you go or wait til you’re done? I don't know how to cook. Do you develop crushes easily? NO. I am soooooo romantically picky. What’s the longest you’ve ever stayed as a guest at someone’s house? A month or more with Colleen after we were evicted. That was a really good time, honestly, regardless of how we feel about each other now. I don't think anyone's done something so selfless for me, and we really did have fun. How bad was your acne when you were a teenager? I'd say it was normal for someone that age. Do you like salsa that has fruit in it? NO. Do you think stained glass windows are pretty? Hell yeah. a vancouver native, her mother died giving birth to nicole, so the only family she’s known her whole life are her siblings, who she’s fiercely protective of, and the father she refuses to have any sort of authentic relationship with due to his sporadic absences. just a few months after her thirteenth birthday, papa potter up and moved their small family across the continent to a trailer park in california, where he left them at unannounced times to fend for themselves. while it wasn’t an ideal situation by any means, in a way it gave nicole purpose; taking care of herself and helping take care of her siblings as she matured. not to mention the added responsibility they all shared in paying rent and surviving in general.

while she picked up the odd job at a convenience store or gas station as a teenager, the eldest potter girl had a fascination with the dark web. at a young age, she was incredibly adept with programming and knowing the innards of computers in general, and the internet was like her playground. it started off very innocent, scamming people across the globe to deposit money into her account ( whether it be out of pity, infatuation, or sheer stupidity ). but after toying with malware and developing her own cryptic coding techniques over the years, nicole became something of a little hacker, which is now her main source of income for the family. posing as a cam girl, she coaxes the information needed out of her ‘ clientele ’ before springing an unforeseen attack on them. she doesn’t completely drain their accounts ( unless they’re disgusting pigs and she’s feeling spiteful ), but she certainly walks away with a large chunk from their savings.

in school, she did absolutely stellar with her grades but “didn’t fully apply herself” according to the majority of her teachers, who frankly weren’t incorrect. nicole didn’t give a shit about her education, deeming high school as a ploy to train young minds to live by the same routine, day in and day out, once they graduated and moved onto the real world. however, despite her practiced skill in technological stealth, she couldn’t exactly bring in all this money without everyone in her small neighbourhood growing suspicious of the formerly poor potter’s newly formed middle class wealth.

sO homegirl ended up applying to university anyway, getting accepted into nyu with a computer science major. she packed up her shit at the age of nineteen and moved across the country into the apartment complex she’s now been residing in for a little over five years. of course, nicole still pulls some trickery online with her faux cam girl stunt, but she’s genuinely enjoying school and the internship awarded through her program’s work placement.

history

let’s get one thing straight --- emrick rowle and hemera rosier did not love each other when they married each other and they knew about it. they both agreed that their marriage was a good choice, a smart move, that it would benefit both and --- well, they both had ambition streaming through their veins, so the choice was made easily. they married, for political reasons, for money, but absolutely not for love.

casworan was born a year into their marriage and was the perfect son. he wasn’t given a welsh name like so many rowles before him had, but a cornish one, celebrating hemera’s mother’s cornish ancestry.

casworan means one who is powerful in battle, which emrick liked. he wanted a soldier, a pawn, a piece in his great chess match that was the world.

cas is a cousin to genie, wes and lo, and also to seren on his mother’s side.

and casworan’s parents might not love each other, they did love him. his mother’s love was doting and smothering, but genuine and unconditional. his father’s was conditional, and based on expectations and constantly changing from hot to cold. emrick raised casworan to the perfect heir, the perfect son, the perfect pawn.

emrick rowle is a strategist, but also a coward. he uses his money and influence to pull strings behind the scenes, but is never the one to publicly call the shots. casworan is his son, but he’s also ... another piece in the game. he’s the person who’ll pick up where he left off, and emrick won’t leave everything to someone he does not trust and respect.

hemera is evan rosier’s daughter, by the way, and by no means a sweetheart, but a better parent. compared to emrick, the standard is quite low but still --- she is a better parent, and casworan is a complete momma’s boy.

so casworan grows up --- spoiled dirty and loved by both parents. he learns languages (french and kernowek from his mother, latin and english grammar and such from a tutor), learns to play the violin, learns about his family’s history and legacy and how it intertwines with the rest of the history of the wizarding world, learns about blood purity and how one day he and his parents will rise above all the unworthy members of their society. he takes it all up and questions nothing, both because he has no reason to, and because his parents are convincing.

abuse tw (verbal and physical) // that’s not to say life was perfect. there was always a certain coldness at home. the lack of love between cas’ parents was clear to him from a young age, and it’s quite a strange thing, when your parents don’t seem to love each other but dont have any issue with it. there was no room for failure at home, no room for toeing the line. his father’s words could go from praising and prideful to harsh and cruel in seconds, his hands hard and unforgiving. casworan learned to keep his back straight and work harder and to swallow whatever anger he felt. he listened to every word that came from his father’s lips and took them in as truth and never questioned the way things were. end of tw

casworan went to hogwarts at age eleven ( he’d seen the castle before, of course --- he’d visited hogsmeade plenty of times before with his mother ) and was sorted into slytherin there. it was an easy sorting --- there were not many non-slytherin qualities the hat saw, besides maybe a sense of loyalty and a hunger for learning but cas’ cunning, shrewdness and ambition outweighed everything.

hogwarts came easy to casworan. he was a good learner and knew plenty of people from his life before school -- people who ran in the same circles. to branch out wasn’t something he felt he needed to do, with a few exception here or there ( for either particularly skilled people or other purebloods he didn’t know yet ). casworan likes learning, values his education and was, well, a nerd. a hardworking student. was in a few clubs too, i’m sure --- i will get back on that when i have it figured out for plotting purposes!

terminal illness tw // in casworan’s third year, his mother fell ill. it was a genetic disease, an incurable one, one that soon left her weakened and bedbound and tired. his father’s response wasn’t to stick to her side --- they didn’t love each other after all, and in all honesty, hemera didn’t want him on her side either --- but to flee in stead. his involvement in shady dealings grew and he retreated to the city more and more for work. casworan ... well, didn’t respond very well.

abuse tw // he raged. he cried and raged and kicked against his father’s shins and demanded that he solved this because, well, the world had always given casworan exactly what he wanted, and when he got something he absolutely did not want, the one person he could blame was his father. he acted like a child because he was one, and his mother was going to die, and his father broke the news in such a cold way that he couldn’t help but rage. his tantrum was met with cold eyes and the same cruelty cas had felt before.

this was when a seed of hate for his father started to grow, something he’d never even dared to feel before. it’s still growing to this day. end of abuse tw //

a family friend moved in to help his mother, and they got a second house elf and life changed, thigns shifted. casworan learned what it was to feel out of control and well, he didn’t like it one bit. he’s entitled and spoiled and used to getting everything he wants and this situation is something he has absolutely no say in and it drives him mad. rather than give him some perspective, it just makes him act more entitled and controlling in the rest of his life. end of terminal illness tw //

so cas makes his way through hogwarts, acting like an entitled twat, hanging with his lads, having a laff here and there and earning a whole lot of NEWTs. he had no qualms sharing his world views or sharing his entitled nature, here and there showing a more violent and cruel streak. casworan is a bully, an elitist prick, someone who looks down on most people.

when the war breaks out, well --- he’s quick to sign up. he believes in the cause, of course, and there’s no other option, really. he’s been prepped for this life. this is what he was made to do. he doesn’t even consider not joining. and so he joins and feels pride and power and a thirst to proof everyone around him that he’s the motherfucking shit. what an IDIOT.

besides his death eater life, cas is mostly focused on maintaining his image. like his father, he works hard on things like charity and philanthropy, so his name appears in the newspaper linked with good news almost exclusively. he’s picky, of course, about the causes he works for ----- things related to education, he genuinely works for, but there’s also some questionable things he donates to.

and then besides that, cas is mostly focused on enjoying life. getting drunk or high out of his mind, fucking shit up with the lads, having a good old time because guess what? the world is his to own and ruin, and he won’t stop at nothing. he’s entitled and obnoxious, but he always pays and tips well and sees absolutely no issues with his behaviour. he can’t wait for the world to become even more his as the war progresses.

ok i had to dig WAAAAAY fucking back in my texts to find this bc i can’t fucking remember it but. his birth name is laermeluion (lyre-mehl-wee-on) aeralinde, when he was in the mafia he went by horthien, and now his full name is just. alphonse mcallister. laermeluion means “man with a sweet song”, horthien means “quick”, and he just chose his current name bc he liked that it sounded human.

2. Do they have any titles? How did they get them?

not currently. pretty sure he gets a title when he marries shaelle but?? i can’t remember what it is

3. Did they have a good childhood? What are fond memories they have of it? What’s a bad memory?

he grew up very very poor and he never actually had any proper schooling but his momma loved him to death and did the best she could to give him a good childhood, so he was generally a pretty happy kid. his best memories are of playing in the neighborhood and getting up to trouble with the other kids, and then of his mom singing him lullabies in elvish. a bad memory is when one of his best friends fell off the top of some scaffolding at a construction site their little gang was playing at and basically bashed his skull in. the kid was in a coma for a week before he finally died and it was al’s first real experience with death.

he has an extremely close relationship with his mom. his dad, not so much. the guy wasn’t exactly a great father and they didn’t hate each other or anything, but he was always distant towards his son. he just didn’t really know how to be a dad. a good memory with his mom is cooking vegetable soup on a rainy day. the sound of the rain on their thin roof, the warm aroma from the pot, her graying hair tied up and falling out of its bun. her worn, elegant hands chopping onions. a bad memory is the fight they got into when she found out he was fucking around with the mafia. she didn’t want that for her son. a good memory with his dad was just. sitting by the stove (they didn’t have a fire) in silence together?? alphonse on the dirt floor playing with something and his dad dozing off in his battered old armchair. sometimes he’d let him sit on his lap when he was younger, but that became less and less frequent the bigger he got. a bad memory is of getting in trouble for busting a neighbor’s window when he was around twelve – his dad dragged him inside by the collar and smacked him across the face and told him he needed to stop messing around and start pulling his weight if he ever wanted to get anywhere in life.

romance novels and poetry are his weakness in life. he likes pretty much all music?? and i think if they had tv in fantasyland he’d watch soap operas religiously.

he’s not a fan of non-fiction.

he likes music but can’t actually play anything – he can sing alright, but he’s no bard. mostly he whistles. if he hears a song he really likes he’d probably try to get someone to dance with him.

21. Do they have a temper? Are they patient? What are they like when they do lose their temper?

he does have a temper, although that’s not usually the first thing that comes to mind. he can be very patient in certain situations and completely without patience in others – he particularly can’t stand assholes or situations he deems injust. when he REALLY loses his temper, he’s genuinely frightening. all of his intensity gets focused into his rage and it’s. it’s scary.

22. What are their favorite insults to use? What do they insult people for? Or do they prefer to bitch behind someone’s back?

any curse will do. asshole, douchebag, motherfucker, etc. if he doesn’t like you, he will tell you straight to your face. and he won’t be gentle about it either.

23. Do they have a good memory? Short term or long term? Are they good with names? Or faces?

he’s got a surprisingly good memory, considering he’s not all that bright. it’s usually his attention span that’s lacking, although when he hyperfocuses he HYPERFOCUSES. he’s better with faces than names, i think. he doesn’t forget people’s faces.

24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?

uh, terrible. he’s bad at sleeping. he likes to sleep on a soft mattress.

25. What do they find funny? Do they have a good sense of humor? Are they funny themselves?

crude humor, not gonna lie. dick jokes will get him. but again, not in polite company. he has manners. he’s an easy laugher, though, and he’s funny but usually it’s because he’s stupid.

26. How do they act when they’re happy? Do they sing? Dance? Hum? Or do they hide their emotions?

he’s all smiles when he’s happy, and very bouncy and bright. he whistles like nobody’s business.

27. What makes them sad? Do they cry regularly? Do they cry openly or hide it? What are they like when they’re sad?

sometimes he feels utterly hopeless. it’s difficult sometimes working on his cases, especially when they’re hasn’t been a lead in a while, and nothing seems to be going anywhere. he’s a quiet crier. he usually only cries in the privacy of his own home. when he’s sad, it’s like all the light has gone out of him. he’s a muted version of himself.

28. What is their biggest fear? What in general scares them? How do they act when they’re scared?

his biggest fear is being recognized for who he was, or for the monster he thinks he is. in general he’s afraid of spiders and heights. when he’s truly afraid he’ll get tense and serious and fidgety.

29. What do they do when they find out someone else’s fear? Do they tease them? Or get very overprotective?

it depends on the fear. if it’s something he thinks is irrational then he can be less than helpful – he’ll just bluntly tell them that it’s stupid, because he genuinely doesn’t understand why they’re afraid of it. but if it’s something very serious, like fear of failure or death, something he can relate to, then he’s much more soothing and supportive.

30. Do they exercise? Regularly? Or only when forced? What do they act like pre-work out and post-work out?

if you count running around the city on foot for investigations as exercise, then yes. otherwise he doesn’t really have the time for it.

31. Do they drink? What are they like drunk? What are they like hungover? How do they act when other people are drunk or hungover? Kind or teasing?

he doesn’t drink very often, and it’s usually only a glass or so of something. he doesn’t like to get drunk. but when he is drunk he’s very sappy and romantic and tends to wax poetic about nothing in particular. hungover he’s snappy and irritable. he finds other people amusing when they’re drunk or hungover, but he’ll help them out.

32. What do they dress like? What sort of shops do they buy clothes from? Do they wear the fashion that they like? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear makeup? What’s their hair like?

he dresses very smartly. three piece suit, tie, pocket square, overcoat, shiny black shoes. he generally buys clothes from a tailor – he makes enough money to be able to as long as he keeps his pieces relatively inexpensive. he loves the clothes he wears. if he actually gets the chance to get ready for bed, he wears a button-down pajama shirt and matching pants in a smooth, satiny material. otherwise he sleeps in the clothes he was wearing already. he doesn’t need to wear makeup and doesn’t really have any interest in it. his hair is neatly groomed and styled. he puts a lot of weight on appearance.

33. What underwear do they wear? Boxers or briefs? Lacey? Comfy granny panties?

whatever fantasy underwear??? but probably just briefs. although i can definitely see him wearing lingerie. but. not every day.

34. What is their body type? How tall are they? Do they like their body?

he’s lean, athletic, with a trim waist and shoulders a bit on the wider side. angular but elegant. 5′11, tall for an elf. he doesn’t really care about his body either way?? he has other, more pressing reasons to feel bad about himself

35. What’s their guilty pleasure? What is their totally unguilty pleasure?

trashy romance novels. expensive tobacco.

36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing?

he’s surprisingly eloquent, especially with the written word. he’s also just very good with people. when he wants to be, anyway. he likes reading, writing, going to see live music, dancing, long walks in the park, and memorizing monologues and poetry. someday that’ll come in handy when he gets to make that grand declaration of love he’s been dreaming of for decades. does blowing smoke rings count as a talent? he can carry a tune, but he’s not a singer by trade. he’s got a nice voice, though.

37. Do they like to read? Are they a fast or slow reader? Do they like poetry? Fiction or nonfiction?

he very much likes to read, but i think he’s a pretty slow reader since he didn’t go to school. his mom taught him how to read and write. he loves poetry and fiction.

38. What do they admire in others? What talents do they wish they had?

he admires dedication, steadfastness, bravery, expressiveness. he wishes he could play an instrument.

39. Do they like letters? Or prefer emails/messaging?

he loves letters. i think even out of the fantasy world he still sends letters on his personalized, scented stationery.

40. Do they like energy drinks? Coffee? Sugary food? Or can they naturally stay awake and alert?

he drinks coffee for work, and he’s got a bit of a sweet tooth. he likes lemon desserts.

41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship?

probably pansexual??? he finds it attractive when people speak their mind or get passionate about something, and he’s also drawn to talent and intelligence. he likes muscles and, well. he’s a boobs guy. and hips and thighs. he likes the kind of relationship that burns intensely for a while and then fades into something more comfortable and warm. he very much likes spoiling his partner.

42. What are their goals? What would they sacrifice anything for? What is their secret ambition?

his goal at this point is just to continue doing as much good as he can while working as a detective. he would sacrifice anything for his mother and his few friends. and for most people, really. he’s very self-sacrificing. he just wants to be able to as much as possible make up for the terrible things he did by doing good instead.

43. Are they religious? What do they think of religion? What do they think of religious people? What do they think of non religious people?

he’s not religious, and i don’t think he cares much either way. it’s not really something he thinks about, unless someone uses their religion or lack of religion to justify something he thinks is shitty. then he classifies them as an asshole.

44. What is their favorite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most?

summer, blue skies and warm nights. he’s much more tolerant of the heat than the cold. he absolutely complains about being cold.

45. How do other people see them? Is it similar to how they see themselves?

people find him charming, or an idiot, or both. a lot of people see him as a good person, i think, which is completely at odds with how he sees himself.

46. Do they make a good first impression? Does their first impression reflect them accurately? How do they introduce themselves?

this one really depends. usually yes, he does make a good first impression, and one that reflects him accurately. that’s when he’s very polite and charming and kind. if he’s decided he doesn’t like someone, however, like shaelle’s boyfriend cam (i think that was his name lmao), he comes across as a total dick. because he acts like a dick.

47. How do they act on a formal occasion? What do they think of black tie wear? Do they enjoy fancy parties and love to chit chat or loathe the whole event?

al loves formal events and loves the excuse to dress up, but he hates snooty rich people. so it’s a bit of a toss-up for him. at the very least he gets to dance and enjoy free food and piss off some nobles, so yeah, i’d say he likes formal events.

48. Do they enjoy any parties? If so what kind? Do they organize the party or just turn up? How do they act? What if they didn’t want to go but were dragged along by a friend?

he loves dances. usually he just shows up, and dances with as many partners as he can, and is the absolute belle of the ball. if he didn’t want to go, then it’s a different story – it’s probably a party for nobles if he doesn’t want to go. but if it’s shaelle who’s making him go then he’ll behave because he loves her.

49. What is their most valued object? Are they sentimental? Is there something they have to take everywhere with them?

a brooch that his mother gave him when he turned sixteen (in elf years, not human years). it’s one of the few beautiful things she ever owned, and he cherishes it and occasionally wears it on his lapel if he feels the need for a little extra luck and support. he’s very sentimental. he takes his pipe everywhere with him, and that’s half because he’s so attached to it and half because he’s got a nicotine addiction. oops.

50. If they could only take one bag of stuff somewhere with them, what would they pack? What do they consider their essentials?

at least five different neckties to go with one suit, his pipe, the brooch, his favorite book of poetry.

Various Characters I meant to post Months ago

Various Characters of mine

I have so many I want to write (some) of them down! This is a suuuuuper long post so more under the cut! Includes a spy, a crime lord/activist, and a bargaining warlock (I have to reblog this later bc tumblr threw a hissy fit about the length)

- Kinda in a Bond-esque spy agency, but more of a contractor

- When everything goes to shit, you can count on them to fix it

- Nonbinary protege of whoever is in charge of the tech division (Mezza? Sloane? Dixon? idk, but they have a hell of a shady past and there’s like… noooothing that can keep Sloane out of computer systems)

- X isn’t formally recognized by APO (authorized personnel only, the spy agency) but they do have access to all information because of a backdoor Sloane made

- So I guess the name is Sloane

- Anyways, X goes on the black ops of black ops, typically with either mercenaries or no back-up at all

- Thus trust issues and like the opposite of dependency - they have so much trouble asking for things but are willing to help anyone or offer material assistance - if they have it

- X is nonbinary and really doesn’t have any preferences on pronouns, as long as they aren’t he/him or she/her

- They’re also autistic and shut down if there’s too much loud noise or if they’re just too tired for some reason - sometimes this means going nonverbal or just Not Functioning and their favorite way to feel better is to sit on the ground, wrap themselves in a blanket and listen to music - so in conclusion they don’t really use guns unless there’s a silencer, and they aren’t v good with them

- A huge part of their espionage function is language!

- They speak German, Spanish, Japanese, FSL, and ASL all idiomatically

- They also speak Russian, French, and Afrikaans, but not fluently

- They can swear and count to ten in Korean and Czech

- They’re pursuing a PhD in computational linguistics, though APO gets in the way

- They’re 24, and have a bizarre set of skills because both of their job, previous jobs and jobs they hold as a cover to pretend they pay their taxes, and special interests

- Sloane is only 7 years older than them, and recruited X out of high school

- At first it was small things, like ‘pick up this book from Elm Street and drop it at Main’ but it got bigger after they graduated

- When X turned 18, they went through formal training - protocol, combat, and analysis

- They’d done some martial arts before hand, but not much punching, mostly kicking, throws, and staffs (5 and 6 feet)

- X’s main job is to clean up messy situations, usually by stealing things or extractions, and their own ops are less combat oriented than the clean ones

- X is not the best at math, not by a long shot, but they can see patterns from a mile away

- “I am the fact guardian, guardian of the facts!” “Puzzles quiver before them!” “FUCK OFF”

- They do simple division when bored and solve a lot of math things by finding patterns and using them

- X is both their designation in the agency (as in ‘x factor’) and their actual name- they use an alias for college

- They live with a few people, most of whom complain at their erratic sleep schedule and ask that please, for the love of god, X gets sleep meds and just a solid 8 hours, for once

- Sloane eventually sends X on an op to extract Mel, Sloane’s girlfriend and top operative

- X doesn’t know what to tell Mel, so mostly they just tell them that things will be answered later

- Mel asks Sloane, who reluctantly explains X’s role, and this sets some things into motion of X eventually being brought into the spotlight

- They have several hearings about their activities

- Eventually, Seville (who runs things? I guess) tells them to carry on as they do, reporting directly to Sloane, but they are recognized now by the APO

- There are three other things I want to fit in:

- Goes missing for [period of time], leaving a very close friend behind, comes back after being presumed dead and no memories, apparently solved a conspiracy and now has many illegal friends who all enjoy thievery

- Magic is a thing (because it wouldn’t be my words if it wasn’t lmao) and common enough that people know it exists but rare enough that it’s kinda intimidating and sometimes people will freak out about it, despite plenty of people having it.

X has/develops magic at some point but is terrified to tell anyone and tries to hide it from their team (which is now their family, love that trope) because they don’t want to be barred from the APO, but it comes out accidentally during a mission

- X’s infodumping saves the day somehow

The Celestian

- K so this is more about an organization, but the Celestian lives in a like a 1920s fantasy setting and likes dancing

- They run a social activism group masquerading as a crime network that uses queer bars and stuff as fronts

- To get money, they dance competitively with their bodyguard and d8m8, the BFF (butch femme fatale) who identifies as a nb lesbian

- To get into any of the places where actual political dismantling and activism happens, who have to have very specific patterns on your nails - nail painting is a method of communication and is also a huge teambuilding exercise

- There are different codes for everything

- When cops try and get in (they can only find the places if they have a member of the Queer Folk), the code is “blue denim” and then the person caught tells the police they need nail polish and then laugh as they get caught, as if they were bullshitting the whole thing

- Other things are called “10:50 am” which looks like a sleepy eye

- Or “songbird rhapsody” which is also a popular song that the Celestian sings at clubs

- Or “money” which is just a green splotch on all the nails

- If you’re a member of the Queer Folk, you get a crate monthly of money and nail polish, and special things on birthdays and holidays

- The Queer Folk do everything from organize protests to take kids in and try to pay for their education through crime - as in robbery from different places

- Their crimes always have a certain flair to them - they value creativity and snazziness

- The Celestian is like 5’ 3” (which, to be fair, is 3 inches taller than I am) and the BFF picks them up a lot

- They don’t like alcohol or caffeine but drink herbal tea 24/7

- If they don’t, something is very, very wrong

- They have a prosthetic leg

Red

- Literally in high school

- A warlock! They traded their gender and all “gender identifying features” to a trans demon for magic powers

- The demon mostly asks them to get coffee and stuff because the demon isn’t very good at bargaining and just wanted Red’s gender, but it’s expected of a patron to keep using the warlock for things

- (on the demon phone) “hey so this is super duper important and if you could get it in the next half hour that’s the best thing”

“what is it”

“alright so go to the corner of Lincoln and Greenleaf, turn three times to your right, once to your left, and a door should open behind you. Don’t try to turn towards it, just fall backwards”

“if I fall onto poison ivy or concrete I’m breaking my fucking contract”

“No, no no no, you’ll appear in that good good heaven spot”

“… the coffee shop?”

- Red focuses on science in their school

- Every interaction is a deal. E V E R Y I N T E R A C T I O N

- Breakfast? “I’ll give you the salt if you hand over the pancakes”

- Entering a building? “Hold the door open and I’ll give you praise”

- School? “You want me to tell you what I do in my spare time? Give me an A on my midterm and I’ll tell you”

- The last one has left a lot of teachers confused and more than a little scared of the silly little nerd in their class

- Honestly, they have straight A’s because they make deal after deal about grades. They never cheat on tests, but they make deals, hold people to them, and know what they’re doing

- Red’s demon is getting a little worried with all the deals

- Red is most accustomed to deals rather than anything else because they think that unequal exchange (i.e., gifts) is really suspect

- That said, Red has no problems altering “equal” exchange to benefit them

- If they ever became a business owner, they would be terrifying

- They want everything to turn out the best it can for every one but… are not fans of laws

- They have many Opinions on law, its enforcement, and the government

- That cousin that will tell you constantly about how the government is corrupt and should be rebooted with the youngest people as the primary interest

- Anarchy? Not quite, but revolution? Most definitely

- No angst, just high school silliness and chaos

- Has no idea what’s going on 90% of the time - a kid on a sportsball team did something amazing, people started treating him like shit for adults liking him, and Red had no idea until like 3 months later

- Red just kinda lives in their head

- Did they hear what you just said? Nah, but they sure did hear that wristwatch every time it clicked on the second.

- Likes the sound of adventure, but mostly gets lost in Ikea and makes deals with the eldritch monsters in the mattress section

- SUCH A SHITTY SENSE OF DIRECTION, COULD GET LOST IN A GRID WITH MAPS AT EVERY INTERSECTION

- Charismatic, but mostly in the sense of lying their ass off and persuading people

- Once tried to go a day without making a deal (on a dare), ended by making a deal to not have to ever do that again

- Businesses both hate and love them - they pay for nothing but will bargain away odd things of equivalent value every time and catch shoplifters, dislikes shoplifters because it’s not a fair trade

- Bizarrely good luck with finding things in pockets, particularly to “pay” for things

10/8-10/14

ok so sunday (the 8th) is when i finally got out of bed and felt comfortable going for a walk, so i walked to the shuk by myself, did a little bit of shopping (and bought a scale!), and then took the bus by myself for the first time.

to be completely honest, i haven’t done anything for all of sukkot. barely left the house (although being sick for like a week was a good excuse for a lot of it lol). marleigh keeps judging me for it but like. whatever

we finally got martyrs to work the other night, and i didn’t really like it lol, and then last night i watched 2 eps of black mirror with matt because i wanted to stay up to wait for sultana to get home from the airport, which was around 11:30. she was happy to see me i guess but when marleigh came downstairs she freaked out, which, i mean it makes sense it just. yknow . whatever!

i feel bad because i feel like between here and my main blog i complain about marleigh a lot, like definitely more than anyone else, and that’s really not how i feel about her. i really do like her a lot, we’re friends, and i’m really glad i’m going to be working with her this school year over any of the other three options (all the kids would like sultana more than me, matt and i would butt heads a lot i’m sure, and rachel and i don’t have personalities that would be compatible for that kind of job).

i think i just feel like marleigh is judging me all the time. she always makes comments about how i like don’t do very much in my free time or how i never leave the house, or i’m so critical that i’m never satisfied with anything, etc. tries to offer me advice for like..weight loss and mental illness without a) knowing what she’s talking about or b) knowing anything about me. very much one of those like ‘positive thinking and yoga will cure you! just stop being so negative!’ people and like at some point she was trying to tell me that i should be eating 2000 cal a day because that’s what’s recommended, and that 1100-1200 is way too little and i’m starving myself. but . hi i’m 4′10 and trying to LOSE weight, if i ate 2000 cal every day i would gain like a pound every week lmfao

speaking of weight loss, though, i was 140 lbs this morning :) so i’m only 12 lbs away from my lowest weight when i lost all that weight a couple years ago. although it’s been VERY difficult for me to see it in the mirror still. those green shorts might (hopefully) fit soon though, i think. which is good because i’m running out of options. not sure what i’m gonna do when it gets cold enough for long pants and i have 3 pairs of leggings and 1 pair of jeans lol. maybe go clothes shopping since i really have some cash left over from the stipend, at least this month. i’m aiming for 110 (or maybe 107.5 just so it’s an even 70 lb loss which sounds impressive lmfao) but tbh i might wanna go down to 105 or 100 depending on how i feel. definitely (probably) not below that, though. what’s annoying is that there are very few people i can talk to about my ultimate goal bc most people, like mom, would be like THAT’S TOO LOW YOU’RE GOING TO STARVE YOURSELF when in fact it’s directly in the middle of the recommended weight for my height, and since i’m not packing very much muscle i think it would actually make a lot of sense for me to hover around there. when i’m there i’ll try to start recomp because it would be nice to be a little toned, but for now i’ll settle with the goal of being able to feel comfortable being photographed lmfao.

i did start c25k up again, though, i’ve only done 2 days so far and i probably should be doing day 3 right now instead of writing this, but i haven’t slept well the past 2 nights so i’m probably just going to do it tomorrow instead. and i also started doing a very small amount of bodyweight exercises. my fear is, of course, that it’ll slow down my weight loss, which it will, and as much as i know to trust the science of “just because you’re not losing weight doesn’t mean you’re not losing fat, muscle weighs more than fat” etc, it’ll be really discouraging not to have that marker that i can graph every day just to know where i’m at. that’s another thing, if (certain) people in the house knew i weighed myself every morning they’d probably flip their shit and think i’m neck-deep in an eating disorder, when in reality it’s so much healthier for me to see the daily fluctuations and be able to look at it as a trend line. if i only weighed myself once a week, let’s say i weigh myself after a day of exercise, or after a particularly sodium-filled day, or just a day i didn’t drink as much water as i thought i did, i would be really upset and discouraged to see a gain on the scale. but in doing it every day i’m much more okay with fluctuations and it’s helpful to see that the overall trend is still going waaay down. i mean i’ve lost almost 40 lbs. (which you’d think i would be able to see in the mirror by now lol)

hmm i feel like i’m not using this journal in a way that will make me happy i kept it. i mean, it’ll be cool to know how i was feeling about certain things, and it’s a personal journal instead of a blog, but i still feel like i’m going to look back and be like “why did you spend so much time complaining about your roommates and talking about your weight loss instead of describing your experience abroad, dumbass?” but also as i keep pointing out to literally everyone, we still haven’t started teaching yet. (two days!!) once we’re there i think i’ll have more to talk about.

the first few days of november we’re going on a 3-day trip to the negev and eilat. i’m excited for it, but also really anxious lol. we also didn’t get to pick our roommates this time like we did last time (although idk if sultana and marleigh would’ve even wanted me to room with them again, they probably would want sydney or rebecca) and i’m really hoping they don’t just stick us with some random people for 2 nights.

we were offered 4 tracks for the educational sector of the program: technology, bedouins, the gaza strip, and the black hebrew israelites. naturally i picked the bedouins lmfao i have no interest in hearing masa propaganda about how hard it is for the israelis to live in gaza (the email seriously was like “learn how these people live as they just try to keep their families safe in the settlements....ok then don’t fucking illegally settle on other peoples’ land?), etc etc. of course the gaza one was the most popular lol. but i was told aaron jaffe is anti-israel (and everyone was like “uhhh why are you even on this program” like shut up lol) and i think he’s doing the bedouin track as well, which was pretty small last time i looked, so even though we haven’t talked before maybe i can strike up a conversation about it because i haven’t been able to talk about it with anyone yet and it’s getting tough.

and then we basically have like a day of free time, during which i’m hoping to go snorkeling and/or swimming with dolphins, which will be amazing. maybe i’ll go shopping or something. but beyond that i don’t know what i’m going to do or who i’m going to hang out with, which makes me worry that i’m either gonna just be following people around like a lost puppy (as usual) or holed up in my room “relaxing” for shabbat because so many activities are optional. there’s an early morning hike on the second day but i decided not to sign up because i don’t particularly like hiking, it’ll be hot down there even though it’s november, and i probably wouldn’t enjoy myself. it just didn’t seem like the best time for a physical challenge, a 2-3 hour hike up and down mountains or whatever. but it’s fine.

oh, i totally forgot to mention that matt and i smoked together! it felt so high school, smoking out of an apple pipe and getting high off such a small amount (for him, i think for me it was pretty standard lol). it was fun though, we watched se7en and then i went to bed early. i think indica makes me too sleepy.

he made weed butter too which i tried but didn’t find worth it, it took like 2 hours before i felt anything and then literally all i wanted to do was go to sleep. so i don’t think i’m gonna have any of that again. which is fine because i don’t want that to be a regular thing, anyway. i don’t wanna get sent home lol
