Pre-Birthday Routine
Words: 2619
@kkgweek
Birds chirped outside, alerting Gai to a beautiful new day.
A day which he would love to spend outside doing morning laps around the village, or partaking in a challenge against his Eternal Rival. With a bright, warm sun that shone down on Konoha, welcoming a brand new day.
The final day of the year.
Instead of being outside enjoying the warm sun on his skin, though, Gai was stuck in bed. With Doctor’s and nurses checking in on him every hour, ensuring that he was staying put.
“I’m bored,” he complained as Shizune sat at his side looking over his X-rays. “When will I be allowed out to enjoy myself again?”
“We’re just waiting on a wheelchair to be made for you,” she assured him, holding up a hand to silence him when he tried to respond. “And no, walking on your hands is not an acceptable alternative. Even you get tired at times, Gai. A wheelchair will be beneficial.”
He knew that.
Every nurse he’d spoken to explained it to him, assuring him that he would get used to it in time. The problem was, he didn’t want to get used to it.
He wanted to be able to walk just as he had before the war.
He longed for the freedom to hop out of bed without the risk of injuring himself simply by applying weight onto his damaged leg.
The moment Gai had decided to open the eighth gate to try and put an end to the war, he’d welcomed death. Accepted that he would never be able to open his eyes again. That he’d never have an opportunity to see his friends smiling or his students cheering.
He’d even accepted that he’d never be able to see Kakashi again.
If it meant saving the world, he was more than happy to die.
What he hadn’t expected, was to be saved.
To be offered a second chance at life, but with restrictions.
“The wheelchair is due to be finished in just a few days,” reaching out, Shizune laid a hand over his knee. “I know this is hard, Gai. Change always is and I’ve seen more than enough people struggle with big changes due to a battle gone wrong, but you’re alive.”
Alive.
That was right.
He was alive. Able to breathe in the fresh air and stare up at the sun hanging over Konoha, greeting on a brand new day.
A day that was meant for celebration.
“Here, I brought you something,” retracting her hand, Shizune reached down to her side and picked up a small bag that was sitting beside her chair. “Emi-san threw in a few extras and said that she’s expecting to see you in person soon.”
Gai couldn’t help but smile. He didn’t even need to peer inside the bag to know what was waiting for him. Emi-san was the delightful woman who ran the Dango shop that he frequented, and it was a tradition of hers to add a few extra sticks of dango to his order on his birthday. Not even a war or Gai being confined to the hospital could stop her from keeping with that tradition, it seemed.
Though, today wasn’t his birthday. It was December 31st, a day early. This year was special, though. Even if he healed at record speed he would still be confined to bed tomorrow. Unable to go out and join the lineup that formed outside of her little shop every year on January first.
A line-up that he usually stood at the front of.
“Thank you, Shizune,” he smiled as he reached out to take the bag from her. “I will enjoy every bite that I take.”
Placing a hand over her mouth, Shizune giggled. “Well, make sure to save one,” she insisted with a playful wink. “I know for certain that someone will be popping by today for a visit.”
“A visitor?” had someone spoken to her about today? Lee and Tenten would not have bothered to inform her of such plans, and they had already visited him as soon as the doctors allowed them into the room. There was a small statue of Ningame sitting on the window ledge to attest to that fact.
A gift that both of them had pooled in together for, according to Tenten.
“You shouldn’t act so surprised, Gai,” Shizune stood up from the chair and smiled down at him. “You know that he’d never miss your birthday. Not even a mission could keep him away.”
A warmth blossomed in Gai’s chest. Familiar and comforting, it was the same feeling he got whenever he spent time with the man in question. A feeling that he had chased for years, wishing for nothing more than to be a comfort to his friend. Someone that he could rely on when the world was crumbling around him.
“You’re more than that,” Kakashi had laughed the day Gai had gathered up the courage to tell him how he felt. “You’re my Eternal Rival, Gai. The reason I’m still here at all.”
Gai still wasn’t quite sure when his feelings had changed. At that moment his heart had decided that Kakashi was someone he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Whom he could imagine a future with, side by side with the world. All he knew for certain was that one day he looked at Kakashi and everything was different, and he’d been so happy to hear that Kakashi felt the same.
“Stay out of trouble,” Shizune turned her back to him and made her way toward the door. “I don’t want to hear about any more broken hospital beds.”
“That wasn’t my fault!”
“Yes it was,” she stopped at the door. “Oh, Hello.”
“Hello,” A familiar voice floated through the air. Just as calm as it always was. “Is it safe?”
“It’s safe,” Shizune confirmed with a smile. “Have fun.”
Gai watched as she stepped out of the room, continuing on her way towards the next job while another figure stepped into view. With a bag hanging from one hand, and a cheerful smile greeting Gai, Hatake Kakashi entered the room.
“Happy Birthday,” He began, just as he did every year when he’d show up at Gai’s bedroom window with an entire day free to spend with him. “Sorry, I’m late. Naruto caught me on the way over and wanted to chat.”
“Predictable,” Gai shook his head and chuckled. No matter what was going on in the world, Kakashi would always be late. Whether it was because he’d spent a little too much time in front of the memorial stone, or because his students wanted to catch up at the most inconvenient times.
Some things just never changed, and Gai was alright with that.
The world might be on the path to a better future, but Hatake Kakashi would always stay the same. A comforting constant in Gai’s life.
“It’s not my birthday, though,” he reminded Kakashi, pointing at the calendar that hung on the wall beside his bed. “It’s December 31st.”
Kakashi simply sighed and stepped into the room. “And what do we do every year on December thirty-first?”
A smile tugged at Gai’s lips as he thought back to all of the previous years. All of the December 31st’s that he’d spent with Kakashi at his side, celebrating his birthday a day early with his best friend.
They would get dango together at Emi-san’s shop, have two or three competitions throughout the day, and just relax and enjoy a nice peaceful day together. With no missions to pull them away from each other suddenly, and their schedules cleared of any other obligations that they might have had.
A day just for the two of them.
“I brought some games,” Kakashi held the bag up in front of himself. “I wasn’t sure which ones we would enjoy, but the shopkeeper was kind enough to provide me with a few suggestions, and even threw in a nice card game when he found out I was bringing it here.”
Gai stared at him, confusion etched on his face.
“Why-”
“You can’t be serious,” Kakashi chuckled. “You’re a hero Gai. Perhaps not to the same level as Naruto, who everyone is fawning over, but still. People are thankful for your role in the war. For your…sacrifice.”
Gai had heard that word before.
Sacrifice.
Lee had said it with tears in his eyes after the doctor had filled Gai in on the damage his leg had sustained.
Tenten had muttered it under her breath, a sadness in her voice.
Everyone who had visited him since he’d woken up had said it at one point or another. Most of them with kindness and cheer. They’d made it clear that they were thankful that the price for Gai’s choice had been smaller than it should have been, and they had thanked him for putting the needs of the world over everything else.
Including his own life.
None of those instances hurt quite as much as this moment.
Hearing the heartbreak in Kakashi’s voice.
Seeing the pained look in his eyes as he stared back at him.
It was clear to Gai that while others celebrated his survival, Kakashi was stuck in the past. Even now, with Gai laying in a hospital bed in front of him, alive and well, he was terrified that he’d disappear at any moment.
That the firey chakra Gai had unleashed inside of himself might escape the seal Naruto put over his heart, and burn him from the inside out.
Something inside of Kakashi had shattered when Gai chose to sacrifice him in a last-ditch attempt to save the world.
A feeling that Gai knew all too well.
One he’d lived with for years, weighing down on his heart a little bit more every year on the anniversary of his father’s death.
“Kakashi-”
Giving his head a shake, Kakashi slapped a smile onto his face. “Never mind,” he insisted as he took a step forward and claimed the seat that Shizune had been occupying just a few minutes before. “It doesn’t matter.”
“It does,” Gai insisted. “I thought I was saving the world.”
“You tried,” placing the bag down on the table at the side of Gai’s bed, he sighed. “You couldn’t have known what was going to happen, and it almost worked. One more hit and who knows, you might have won.”
“I might have,” his left hand reached out toward Kakashi and gently cupped his cheek, a smile tugging at his lips when Kakashi leaned into the touch. “Then maybe I would be the hero of the world.”
“Now that would be something,” Kakashi chuckled. “Maito Gai, the greatest Shinobi in the world.”
“Who’s to say it couldn’t still happen?”
Pressing his cheek into Gai’s palm, Kakashi chuckled. “I have games,” he stated, pointing towards the bag sitting off to the side waiting for them to dig in and choose what they wanted to play. “And it’s your birthday, so you get the first choice.”
Gai chuckled at Kakashi’s efforts.
Emotional conversations had never been his Rival’s strong suit. Even a war that had almost cost both of them their lives didn’t seem capable of changing that.
Rubbing his thumb over Kakashi’s cheek, he watched as his eyes slid shut. “And how long do I have your company for today?”
“It’s your birthday,” Kakashi repeated as if Gai had suddenly forgotten what day it was. “The only thing I’ll be doing today is sitting right here, playing games with you.”
Gai blinked. “But, don’t you have responsibilities? Lee and Tenten told me that Tsunade-sama was already planning-”
A finger came up and pressed against his lips, silencing him for just a moment.
“Not today,” Kakashi insisted, his eyes opening once more. “Today is for you.”
Gazing into those soft black eyes, Gai saw his future.
Mornings standing by Kakashi’s side, supporting him through the difficulties of leading an entire village into the future. Afternoons spent racing around the village having competitions and just enjoying life in a way they had never been able to before. Evenings, just the two of them wrapped up in each other's arms welcoming a new day.
No fear.
No regrets.
When Kakashi lowered his finger, Gai took the opportunity to ask one simple question. “Just today?” A warmth bloomed in his chest when Kakashi began laughing.
“Today,” his partner confirmed. “And tomorrow, and the day after.”
‘Forever.’ A promise left unspoke. Lingering between the two men while they sat there staring at each other.
Satisfied with that answer, Gai retracted his hand. “Let’s not waste another precious moment,” he declared. “We have games to play, and I have every intention of winning against you in every single one of them.”
Kakashi’s laughter rang through the air. Light, unrestrained laughter. A treat to Gai’s ears after days of being stuck in a boring hospital room for days with nothing to do.
“Is that a challenge, Rival?” Gai didn’t need to see Kakashi’s mouth to know he was smirking. From the overly pleased look in his eyes to the subtle way his mask moved with the curve of his mouth, there was no doubt in Gai’s mind that he’d struck the right cord to unlock competitive Kakashi.
A side of his partner that so few people could see.
“A challenge that I have every intention of winning,” Gai confirmed. “I feel like the luckiest man alive today, and the most skilled. After all, who else can say they have faced off against a god and won?”
“Naruto and Sasuke,” Kakashi answered, his laughter simmering into a fond chuckle. “Sakura also punched a goddess in the head, and while I didn’t fight I did survive.”
“But I punched a God so hard that he bled,” Gai continued to argue. “I think I’ve more than earned my place as the strongest shinobi in the entire world. Even stronger than the great Hatake Kakashi.”
“Perhaps,” Kakashi agreed. “Though I still have one thing over you.”
Snorting, Gai opened the bag Shizune had given him and plucked a stick of dango from it. “And what is that?”
Snatching the dango out of his hand, Kakashi tugged his mask down with his other hand and bit into the light pink ball at the top. While he chewed on his stolen treat, savouring every bite, Gai sat in his bed glaring at him.
“That was mine,” he grumbled while Kakashi swallowed his food. “Shizune got those for me.”
“Well, maybe if you were the strongest Shinobi in all of the world,” waving the dango in front of Gai’s face, he chuckled when he reached out and snatched it back from him. “You would have been able to stop me from stealing your precious dango.”
Gai huffed. “I could be the strongest Shinobi in the universe and you would still steal my dango from me.”
“Oh? And why do you say that?”
A feeling of pride swelled in Gai’s chest as he thought about all of the ways Kakashi could sneak up on him. The Copy Ninja’s skills in stealth were simply unmatched. Even Gai would never be able to keep track of Kakashi if he wanted to hide.
He didn’t have to tell him that, though. Kakashi knew that his stealth skills excelled above most others.
“Because you’re my rival.” he declared with a proud smile.
“Rival,” Kakashi’s smile softened. “and here I thought I got special privileges because I was your boyfriend.”
Throwing his head back, Gai laughed so hard that tears began to run down his face. “Kakashi,” he reached up and gently wiped away the tears. “Those two words mean the same thing.”

Favorite protagonist: tsunade
Favorite antagonist: haku and zabuza
Favorite Akatsuki member: kisame
Favorite Akatsuki couple: sasori and deidara (not romantically, i just like when they argue)
Which character do you think deserves more appreciation: shino, kankuro, fuu, and tenten out of the younger generation (i don’t watch or read boruto). anko, kurenai, and genma from the middle generation. maito dai from the older generation
Which character do you think deserves less appreciation: sakura (annoying and i don’t like her but im too tired to go into that rn), itachi (idc who told him to, mans still killed his entire clan and tortured his younger brother several times), and sasuke (you all appreciate him for the wrong reasons!!!! love him for being a revolutionary, not for rejecting his ideology in the end)
Which character(s) didn’t deserve to die: neji, haku, and zabuza (he should’ve lived to see his country be given stability under mei, he deserved it, argue with the wall)
Who do you ship Naruto with: hinata mostly but a small part of my brain screams ino
Which character do you think looks good with everybody: sasuke
Which character out of Teams 7(don’t forget Sai),8,10, Gai would join the Akatsuki: depends what akatsuki we’re talking about! original akatsuki whose goal was world peace through diplomacy? choji, lee, naruto, kakashi, gai, hinata. the akatsuki the characters actually interact with? neji, asuma, tenten.
Hottest female character: tenten or kurenai
Hottest male character: DON’T FLAME ME FOR THIS BUT KAKUZU LMAOOOO
Would you eat Ramen: yeah
Pro-ending or anti-ending: pro
How would your version of Naruto ending and Boruto play out (don’t be shy, make it VERY LONG, out touch the smallest details):
1. neji would live because hiashi sacrificed himself in place of his children. i dont really have anything further planned for him in my head but rest assured that he is alive.
2. konoha involves itself in inter-clan business and makes it a criminal offense for hyuuga main branch members to torture the side branch members. no new seals are placed.
3. boruto is not named boruto because what a weird fucking name, no thanks!
4. the truth about both the uchiha massacre and the destruction of uzushiogakure and konoha’s roles in them are revealed to the public.
5. the villagers and ordinary shinobi play a more active role in the running of the village and it moves away from bureaucracy and to tobirama’s original vision of a democracy. the hokage is actually elected, rather than proposed by officials to the daimyo and that’s that.
6. academy starts at age 8 or 10 and finishes at a soft 16 - if a student is particularly gifted, the lowest age they can graduate at is 14.
7. we actually get a scene between naruto and karin where they acknowledge and talk about their shared roots.
8. no sasusaku i’m sorry i just really hate it. sorry sarada. i think sasuke should be allowed to stay single.
9. more children!!! more babies!!!!!!! naruto and hinata have about 4, ino and sai have 2, karui and choji have 3. stop the population from dwindling
10. i actually like the fact that hinata and choji are like retired from the shinobi industry, i dont think they actually ever really wanted to be parts of it. but hinata plays an active role in the improvement of hyuuga intra-clan rapports, even if she’s not clan head.
11. i’d have killed off iruka and kiba but that’s just me. not because i hate them (i love iruka to the moon and back) but i think their deaths would’ve been realistic and meaningful (and also hurt a lot - can you imagine naruto’s reaction to iruka’s death, or kiba dying and leaving akamaru? pain)
12. naruto doesn’t become hokage. he’s a jounin-sensei :D
13. the older generation pairs off as well!! my heart goes soft for gai and anko, i think maybe they have a kid together
14. none of the electronic advancement you see in boruto. i want my bitches to continue suffering
15. orochimaru is either in prison or executed. in either case anko, yamato, and the other people they hurt get justice.
16. choza dies alongside shikaku and inoichi (again, not because i don’t like him), even if he isn’t at hq
17. no fucking rabbit goddess jesus fuck that storyline just about took me out lmao

What You Do to Me
Kakashi Hatake x F!reader Smut
Tumblr media
Warnings: oral sex, suggestive themes, lots of swearing, mention of violence/death
Cheers to the first story for the horny blog. Let’s see how this goes. Plot here follows an ANBU reader that is returning home. They are referenced as female, but could be any gender in a dress. Hope you enjoy 🖤
————————————
The leadership position was an honor— one you had fought tooth and nail for, even. You stood apart in how willing you were to climb to the top, to become the best of the best. However, it had its downsides.
You struggled making genuine friendships. You could be polite, sure, but so many people didn’t seem worth the effort anymore. It was easier to catapult all of your efforts into your training and work life.
It did make the good friends you had all the more special to you, though. You loved them dearly, and time and time again they proved their loyalty to you. Thankfully it didn’t waver whenever you were away for extended timeframes.
You had been sent away for an assassination. Somewhere nearly across the map, in a remote scavenger village where trouble had been brewing for the Hidden Leaf Village politically. It had done a number on you. You could recall the screams of the warlord’s wife when she found him in his bed with his throat cut.
As you settled into the routine of being home again, you found solace in Kurenai Yuhi. She was the friend that had been with you the longest, since the academy. You witnessed each other’s growth throughout your short lives and had been there to celebrate with and uplift the other whenever needed. That being said, she had also been quick to notice the subsequent depression that fell over you after your latest mission.
“When was the last time you went out?” She asked you flippantly.
You had come over to her home for tea the moment you had turned in the paperwork to the Hokage’s office. You shook your head.
“I’m here now, aren’t I?”
She flicked your shoulder. “That’s not what I meant. Honestly! For fun. Something that doesn’t keep you holed up in your apartment. You know, with people.”
You gave half a laugh. “You’re scheming.”
“And if I am?”
You sighed. “You’ll rope me into it somehow. Just nothing too wild, please.”
She says it’s for your own good, and she’s probably right. Kurenai arranges dinner at a local bar with your peers, and the other jonin accept their invitations quickly.
Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. These are people you really loved and appreciated. It would be good to let loose for a bit. And then Kurenai comes to your door to get ready with you as promised, and she throws black fabric in your face immediately.
“WHAt the fuck—?” Scrambling, you take it off your head and your eyes bulge.
It’s a beautiful black dress. Nothing outrageously fancy, but simple and refined without looking like you were trying too hard. You snorted, and Kurenai called out to you from the bathroom.
“Kakashi’s coming, too!”
“Goddamnit... Kuri—“
“Just try it on! I promise it’s not itchy. And you look good in black.”
And as it turns out, you did. The dress hugged you in all the right places without suffocating you, and fell loosely just above your knees.
You and Kurenai looked at your body in the mirror almost surprised.
“Okay, I really like it a lot.” You admitted with a small smile, and she gave a playful smack to your ass.
“I told you!”
...
Everything falls into place accordingly, and as you both approach the bar, you can feel a familiar fire burning in your chest.
You were happy to have time with your friends, but you were itching to see one in particular. You hadn’t seen Kakashi since weeks before you left to execute the assassination.
God, how to describe how you felt for this man and where to begin? He was within your circle of true companions, many of whom you’d known since childhood. But Kakashi— he was different.
You’d admired him from afar as children, intrigued by his protege-level talent, until you had been roped into Gai’s shenanigans along the way. In truth, you think you shocked him by not being so intimidated by his prowess.
Ultimately, you could see he was lonely. You’d had your own losses yourself, but it was hard to imagine everything he had endured. You gained an honest respect for him, and you’d protected him beyond your time together in ANBU. But nothing could deny the pull you felt to him, or how much you wanted to be the person to put a smile on his face.
...Even if you couldn’t see it.
As you wait with your posse, your eyes find him first when he is (of course) the last to show up. You can’t help but observe him greedily when no one else notices, and you can’t help but stand a little taller when you notice his brows rise when he takes in your dress.
And from there, the night is history. You all pile into a cramped booth and order several rounds of drinks and food to last the night. Everyone has something to contribute, laughing, teasing, and bickering the night away. It warms your heart; finally,
you feel like you’re back home.
Your mentality becomes stronger too as you feel the warmth from the sake hit you. With precise aim you manage to toss a piece of sushi into Gai’s mouth from across the table and your audience applauds.
Yet despite your sport, you can’t ignore the looks Kakashi has been giving you even before you laughed in triumph. He’s been particularly quiet for some time, but you can’t tell if it’s the booze or the atmosphere getting to him.
When the waitress comes to gather your third round of empty drinks you can feel your mood shift. She’s a lovely girl,
thin and with pretty doe eyes. You can’t pick it up through the noise, but she makes a comment to Kakashi and you can make out a smug smile through his mask. He holds out cash between two pointed fingers to her, and she happily takes it and bats her eyelashes at him.
Something begins to boil in your blood. It wasn’t like you to get jealous— that couldn’t be it. But you swear you see his eyes dart to follow her hips as she leaves. And it irritates the living shit out of you.
You’d yearned after this man for what? Your entire adult life? How dare he. Disregard the fact you had never had the guts to confess to him.
Fuck him. Fuck him and his pretty eyes, and his stupid soft hair, and his feathery laugh—
God, you were in so deep. Your seething turns into pouting in your head. Sitting on the sidelines sucked.
And even still... something in your resolve is building. It could be impatience, or the fear you were nowhere near drunk enough to pull this off and forget about it if it went sour. But as the waitress eyes him from the bar, you excuse yourself to the restroom while the attention is on Asuma at the other side of the table.
With Kakashi on the outer seat, it’s easy to carefully but firmly hoist his vest into your hand so you can easily whisper in his ear.
“Outside in five, Hatake.”
...
He could easily find you when he got outside to see you weren’t directly by the entrance. You had snuck into the side alley to patiently wait, like a cat waiting for a mouse to show itself from the underbrush.
Your nerves are broiling over while you idle, and the heat in your gut is burning you alive. But just as you’re ready to talk yourself out of it, he sneaks around the corner.
“This is some rendezvous, don’t you—“
He can’t even finish before you’ve swiftly backed him against the wall. You hold his wrists firmly in place by his shoulders, though you’re aware he could quickly break your hold if he tried.
“What the hell’s wrong with you Kakashi?” You pitifully laugh. “Do you think I’m not paying attention to you?”
Your words are more vicious than the defeated sound of your voice.
He playfully arches an eyebrow. “So, you have been watching me?”
“Of course I’ve been watching you, jackass! How could you even— but I know we’re not— but still—!”
Your resolve is quickly dissipating while his expression becomes more amused. Damn him.
“I think that was a confession if I’ve ever heard one,” he calmly adds. You glare at him.
He thinks he’s won, and gets ready to leave, but you press your knee between his legs. He can’t move, and there’s not enough pressure beneath his crotch to hurt, but he then has your attention.
“Do you have any idea what you do to me, Hatake?” You dangerously whisper to him.
Now, you see him sweat. His eyes look away, and that won’t do. Not anymore.
“Every night I was away, all I could think about was you.” You breathe into his collarbone, kissing over his clothed neck until you reach his flushed ear.
“Y/N—“
“I’m tired of playing games. You know how much I want you. Only you.” You suck on the lobe of his ear and grin when you feel him inhale sharply.
Your hands fall down to his hips and grip them harshly to ground yourself. With closed eyes, you have to steady your breathing to calm yourself. “If you don’t want this, tell me. You don’t have to.”
He’s ripped out of his haze by the sincerity of your tone. In the dim light, you can see him pull his mask down with a finger to take you in fully. His smile is so breathtakingly, beautifully raw.
“I do want you, and all of this. Now kiss me already.“
And like that, your heads are tilted and your lips are locked. The fire in your belly explodes to the rest of your body and you feel it amplified every time you touch him.
He moans deeply when you begin to push against him, reveling in how this wasn’t a dream. One of his hands cradles the back of your head through your hair, and you grin when the other trails down to grope your ass.
You gently rub your knee into his crotch, and he keens while you run your hands up his toned stomach and over his tight chest. When you’re to his face, you lower your knee to push your hips together and pull his hair as you slip your tongue into his mouth.
He submits to you willingly, openly, and freely. And it drives you wild.
Your kisses become more desperate as your tongues interlock, and he feels up from your thigh to your ass when you wrap a leg around him for balance.
His grip tightens around the back of your legs. “Jump,” he says, breathlessly.
You smile. “No.”
The wild look in your eyes sends a shiver down his spine.
He goes to ask you why, but then you’re on your knees in front of him and he swears he double-takes. You pause when your hand is at his zipper and he swears he’ll scream.
“You can stop me at anytime.”
“I don’t want to! Please,” he rasps, fingers trying to find purchase at the top of your head.
His begging sends the heat within you straight to your core. So you indulge, and pull down his pants and underwear enough to let his cock bob out into the night air.
He hisses at the cold initially, but almost chokes when he feels the flat of your tongue press against his cockhead. Your eyes are dark with a sinister lust when you stare up at him, and it takes his breath away.
“Fuck, Y/N, please,” he whines, his voice catching.
You flick your pointer finger up and trail it from between his balls up his entire length, not removing it from his now fully erect shaft.
“Please what? Use your words baby.”
He bucks his hips forward trying to get close to your mouth again.
“Please Y/N, blow me,” he pants. “Fuck me with that pretty mouth of yours.”
Did you wickedly grin once more? Probably. But you close your eyes and take his entire cock down your throat at once and he nearly seizes.
You start at an agonizing pace, making him wanton and needy for you. But just as he’s tiring, you speedily lick your tongue around his shaft and deeply suck him, making him yelp in the process.
“AH!— Holy shit!” He gasps and tightens his grip on your hair.
You hum around his cock, happy with his response, and he gives you a low, drawn out groan to follow. It’s enough to distract him while your hands hook around the back of his thighs to hold him in place.
You run your nails down his thighs just as you begin to swirl your tongue over his sensitive head, and then you take him as far back into your throat as you can once more.
Kakashi’s eyes are rolling into the back of his head, completely at your mercy and enjoying every minute of it. His silver hair frames his pearlescent skin so well in the darkness, which must contrast well with the weeping cock in your mouth.
You come up for air, and give him fast, sticky pumps as you look up at him cheekily.
“How are you feeling handsome?”
“S-So good, holy fuck.” He tries to catch his air as well, but he shakes his head. “Please, let me fuck your mouth. You feel so fucking good, please let me.”
Who were you to refuse?

Naruto runs ahead and turns the corner into the compound before Iruka can admonish him to be careful and watch where he’s going. He follows behind slower, weighed down by a grocery bag in each hand, and turns into the compound in a good mood. A day out with Naruto is always pleasant and makes him happy—even though the four-year-old isn’t his biological pup, Iruka knows he’s as good as imprinted on the kid. He’s so glad that Hatake-san had approached him to be a part of his pack. He likely never would have gotten this chance, otherwise.
He smiles softly. They’re only an embryo, barely the size of a sunflower seed now, but so very precious and already the whole pack is excited to have their second pup.
“I don’t care if it’s your home, Iruka’s my omega—”
“Our omega,” Hatake-san growls.
“But the pup is mine.”
Naruto creeps back to Iruka’s side at some point and takes his hand. Iruka’s other hand slips to his belly, resting protectively over where his new pup is growing. In the garden, Hatake-san is mostly calm, hands in his pockets and eye staring the other alpha down. Mizuki is… less calm. He’s posturing, pacing back and forth and swinging his arms around wildly.
“This pack wouldn’t exist without me,” Hatake-san growls. “The pup should be given the choice to be raised as Hatake.”
Around them are the pack betas. Anko is trying to put herself between Mizuki and Hatake-san, while Gai-sensei and Tenzō-san are also trying to physically deter the other alpha from starting a fight.
Naruto whines, soft and scared, pulling on Iruka’s uniform pants. “Why are they fighting?”
Iruka puts himself slightly in front of Naruto. “Let’s go inside. We don’t need to be here for all this, okay?”
They barely get to the door when Mizuki explodes. “Iruka is mine and that pup is mine,” he snarls. “I’ll take him and leave this pack without an omega, and then you’ll lose your precious monster-child. I hold the cards here, Kakashi; you’re the one with silly things like bonds.”
Iruka pushes Naruto inside and glares over his shoulder at Mizuki and Hatake-san, still posturing and snarling at each other. If he weren’t carrying, he’d put himself between them just like Anko is doing, but…
He looks over at Naruto, now playing in the corner of the kitchen with the collection of blocks Gai had bought him a few days ago. Mizuki could take Iruka out of the pack; he is right in his claim to be the pup’s sire, and can easily force a mating bite with little or no repercussions. If this were to happen, Hatake-san would lose his right to have Naruto as an adopted pup—Sandaime did say that this whole thing was contingent on Hatake having a pack, and without an omega the pack will fall apart. Naruto would end up back in the orphanage; Iruka’s not delusional enough to believe that Mizuki would let him keep Naruto, even if he has imprinted.
Iruka braces his lower back on the kitchen counter and shuts his eyes. He doesn’t want to have to make this choice.
He lays his hands over his belly and weeps.
~
“I need you to be very good today,” Iruka says, holding Naruto’s hand as they walk through the village.
“You always want me to be good, ka-chan! And I am!!”
Iruka smiles. “That’s true. I do love it when you’re good. But today more than usual, I really need you to be on your best behavior.”
He opens the doors to the hospital and herds Naruto inside. Mizuki is at the Academy, Anko at T&I, Gai is with Kakashi doing some odd training exercises, and Tenzō is… well, Iruka’s not supposed to know that Tenzō is ANBU, but he saw the beta’s mask a few days ago.
Everyone is occupied.
He takes Naruto to the elevator and together they ride up to the second floor. Just beyond the elevator doors is a small waiting room that smells of rich, pregnancy pheromones. Half of the chairs are taken.
Iruka goes up to the reception desk and says, “Hi, I’m Umino Iruka; I called last night?”
The receptionist looks up at him and nods. “I remember. You can have a seat.”
It doesn’t take long at all for his name to be called, and he collects Naruto from the play table and quietly follows the nurse into the exam rooms.
“How far along are you?” the nurse asks once they’re in the privacy of a closed room. The door shuts heavily under her palm.
“Seven weeks.”
“Any mating bites, courtings, packmates?”
“I have a pack—three betas and two alphas. No courting or mating bites though.”
“And the pup here?”
Iruka puts his hand on Naruto’s shoulder and gently squeezes. “He’s adopted. We’re imprinted.”
The nurse makes a note. “Congratulations,” she murmurs. “Do you want to disclose a reason for termination?”
“No, thank you.” He pauses, considering; then says, “but it is urgent, if I could get it done today.”
She looks up at him and sets her folder and pen aside. She takes her glasses off. “Umino-sensei, are you safe within your pack?”
Naruto looks up at him with a small head tilt.
Iruka reiterates, “It’s urgent, and I’d like to have it done today. If at all possible.”
The nurse purses her lips and says, “I’ll see what we can do for you, Umino-sensei. We’ll need to do a pelvic exam first, so if you could get undressed?” She pulls out a modesty blanket from a drawer behind her, and then leaves the room.
As soon as it’s back to just him and Naruto, Iruka falls apart. He leans against the edge of the exam table and hugs his middle, sniffing and crying. And then Naruto is right in front of him, reaching up to his face and patting his cheeks. “Ka-chan, why are you crying?”
He shakes his head. “Don’t—I’m okay, I promise. I will be okay.”
Naruto frowns and rests his temple against Iruka’s belly. “What does ‘terminate’ mean?”
Iruka cries harder, hugging Naruto tightly and tries to think about the best way to answer the question. He hasn’t had Naruto for more than half a year, but he knows he’ll do anything to keep him… even if it means aborting this growing pup before they can become a reason for Mizuki to take him away.
He has a responsibility to his pup—to Naruto. He has a responsibility to his pack—not just Mizuki.
“You… Naruto, you know I love you and wouldn’t trade you for anything?”
“Yeah?? Ka-chan, what—?”
“Your sibling,” Iruka sniffs, “they can’t… I can’t. Naruto, ‘terminate’ means ‘to stop’. We’re here today so that we can stop my pregnancy.”
Naruto looks up at him and asks, “Is this because of what Mizuki-nii was saying last night? Because Kaka-nii would never let him take you away, I know that!”
Iruka smiles thinly at Naruto, brushes back his bangs. “Mizuki has a right to the pup, as their sire. And if he wanted to bond and leave the pack to raise his pup, I can be compelled to go with him.”
Naruto hugs him tighter. “And so you want to stop being pregnant so Mizuki-nii can’t take you away?”
Iruka nods. “I have other reasons, but yes.”
“What’s going to happen to the baby?”
“They… They’re going to be removed from my body, and won’t become a part of our pack.”
“But if they’re removed, then… then, they’ll die?”
“Naruto, they’re not really alive right now. And something that’s not alive can’t die.”
“But—”
“Naruto, what we’re stopping is the eventuality of a new pup. It’s. It’s a hard choice, but one I’m very sure about making.”
“That’s not—” Naruto buries his face into Iruka’s belly and murmurs something, muffled against Iruka’s shirt.
“What?”
Naruto lifts his head and cries, “I don’t want my little sibling to grow up in a bad pack! You’re making the right choice; but can I get another chance at being a big brother someday??”
Iruka kneels down and kisses Naruto’s forehead. “Of course, Naruto. You’ll be the best big brother ever, when the pack is ready to give you one, okay?” Naruto nods rapidly, and Iruka hugs him closer still. “I just hope the rest of the pack will understand someday.”
“If they don’t,” Naruto frowns, “then we leave the pack and start our own. We don’t need people who don’t care about you, Ka-chan.”
A knock sounds at the door and Iruka clears his throat. “Sorry, I’m not ready yet.”
“That’s alright, Umino-sensei. I’ll come back in another few minutes,” the nurse says through the door without opening.
Iruka smiles at Naruto and brushes his hair aside. “I have to get ready. Could you go and sit on one of those chairs and be good and patient?”
Naruto nods and sits down. Iruka gets ready for termination.
~
Later that night, Iruka tells the pack that he and Naruto had been out shopping and he tripped over and landed poorly onto his stomach, resulting in a miscarriage. His betas all cry over him—Gai-sensei, in particular, soaks through the fabric on Iruka’s shoulder. Anko and Tenzo-san both scent him in comfort and solidarity. The two alphas… Hatake-san looks upset, but asks to scent Iruka to ensure he’s alright; that they can always try again for another pup, but they can’t replace Iruka. Iruka accepts the scenting, and breathes in the alpha’s deep woodsy scent in return.
Mizuki is livid. He storms away to their bedroom without offering to scent Iruka. Iruka’s worried about what’s going to happen later that night…
And then, when he’s alone cleaning up after dinner, Hatake-san approaches him and asks to speak to him privately. Iruka dries off his hands and follows the alpha to the library, where they close the door and then Hatake-san asks, “Why did you lie to the pack?”
“I didn’t—”
“Iruka-sensei. Please. I could smell the lie on you,” Hatake-san holds up his hands. “I just want to know the truth, please?”
Iruka folds his arms across his chest. He aches everywhere—the procedure was invasive; he hadn’t wanted to take the pills to force a miscarriage in case Mizuki found out and threw the second dose away. “I elected to abort the pregnancy,” he says.
Hatake-san nods. “Alright. Thank you for letting me know.”
Iruka narrows his eyes. “You’re not… mad?”
“Why would I be? It’s your body. You know yourself better than I, and I trust your judgement. I wouldn’t have asked you to become my omega—my pack omega,” he quickly corrects himself, a light blush peeking over his mask, “if I didn’t trust you.”
He smiles softly. “Thank you,” Iruka says.
“Did you need a separate place to sleep tonight? I’ve heard that omegas tend to want to nest alone after a pregnancy loss, however it happens.”
“No, I’m alright.”
Hatake-san nods and takes a few steps closer. “Is it alright if I scent you again before you head to bed, then?”
“You’re one of my alphas,” Iruka says. “You don’t need to ask.”
“And yet, I’m asking.”
“I—” Iruka feels his own face heat up. Mizuki never asks to scent him… and neither do any of the betas. It’s… nice, to be asked. “Yes, please, Hatake-san.”
“We’re pack, Iruka-sensei. Please call me Kakashi.”
“Oh. Um, okay. Kakashi-san.” Iruka nods, holding out his wrists. “You may.”

Friend Killer Kakashi
ao3
words: 2.2k
warnings: angst, mention of gore, mention of vomit, no comfort
He was ready to crawl out of his own skin. His whole body flushed with waves of heat, prickling uncomfortably in his chest, like thousands of pins jabbing both inside and outside of himself. He stopped, gripping the counter to hold himself steady while he dragged shallow breaths into his lungs. He knew he needed to take a deep breath, he was telling himself to take a deep fucking breath, even just one, why can’t he just even breathe correctly, how the fuck was he supposed—
The sound of his fist interrupted him before he’d even realized he had struck out. Knowing it would be several minutes before the pain really set in, he smacked his hand against the counter again and shook his head viciously. Silver strands, oilier than he usually let them get, stung as they met skin while the weight of his hair shifted.
He sucked air thickly into his nostrils then pawed at his nose, grimacing at the spices that overwhelmed the air around him. He tossed the pan into the sink, not caring that it still sizzled or that the oil splashed onto the cold tiles beneath him. He was trying to make pan fried eggplant to go with the premade miso soup he’d picked up last week. It had been a shitty week and he just wanted to make his favorite meal to make everything hurt a little bit less. There was no way it’d be as good as what Gai made, or whatever Dai had done when he first made it for him, but Kakashi figured it would do, and since it would be the first thing he had cooked himself all week, there should be some sense of achievement and dopamine to relish in when it was done. Unfortunately, it had gone terribly.
He couldn’t remember exactly what spices went on the eggplant. Salt, pepper, minced garlic, and then Gai would riff from there. Kakashi hated that—he was fine as long as he could follow a recipe. Gai, however, could just pour a splash of soy, or a squeeze of lemon, or even a drizzle of honey on anything and it was phenomenal, and also, unrepeatable. He could remember what the version he wanted tonight should taste like, and it didn’t matter what bottles he shook out into the pan, it never smelled right. The oil just kept popping onto his arms and hands, and the eggplant got slimier, and everything started to smell way too strong.
Kakashi Hatake, master of a thousand jutsu, and fucking garbage at cooking.
Whatever.
Running his hand along his forehead, he tried to find a single thought to focus on rather than the swirling mess in his head. Rin’s death a few months ago had hit him hard, much like he had hit her. He knew Gai hated to hear him think like that, but she would be alive if he hadn’t been there. If his hand hadn’t crushed through her chest, her ribs scraping along—
He lurched forward, the smell of the kitchen and the visceral memories getting to him at last. His shoulders jerked erratically as he retched into the tiny sink then sunk to his knees. The cold of the floor helped ground him while he wrapped his muscled arms around his stomach, leaning his head against the cabinet until the room stopped spinning.
Pathetic.
Obito would be absolutely pissed to know this was what he died for.
Gai wouldn’t be back from his mission for at least four more days. Kakashi was on a temporary leave pending the results of the investigation into Rin’s death. Ibiki had tried to reassure him the other day that unofficially it was looking good, and should turn out in his favor soon. He was almost certain to be found not at fault. Kakashi had scoffed—even if that was the official ruling, her murder was entirely his fault.
While they weren’t living together, Gai had taken it upon himself years ago to have a spare key, or maybe several spare keys, to his apartment copied and he kept one in a pocket in that garish green spandex at all times. With everything going on, Gai had been by every other day or so that he was in the village. The couch still had a crumpled blanket at one end he had used the last time he stayed overnight, and the one throw pillow with the Hatake crest that Gai wouldn’t let him get rid of. He tossed it out of his way as he flopped down on his back, letting his legs kick up and rest over the top of the dingy couch.
Why did anyone bother with him? Why would Ibiki go to the effort of leaking confidential information about his investigation to him? Why would Asuma invite him out for drinks every Friday night? Why would Kurenai and Genma leave bottles of sake in his mailbox with notes that everything would be fine? Why would Gai.. anything relating to him?
He couldn’t even hold the memories back long enough to successfully make dinner. He hadn’t even reheated the miso soup, and that was only two steps. He couldn’t save Obito, he couldn’t save Rin, he couldn’t convince Gai to leave well enough alone.
What if Gai was next?
Fuck.
He couldn’t let Gai be next. There were a lot of things he had failed at, but damned if he wouldn’t succeed in this. He could not, under any circumstances, let Gai any closer, any further into his life. The further away he could get the overly-enthusiastic shinobi, the better.
He nodded, swinging his legs around to the edge of the couch and letting that propel him into a seated position from which he sprang up. He walked over to the tiny end table and wrenched open the single overstuffed drawer, digging through for a pad of paper and the first writing instrument he could find, a blue pen with the academy’s logo printed on it.
Gai—
I don’t know how to tell you this, but you have to stay away from me. It’s for your own good. No one close to me is safe, even from me.
Sorry. Please understand.
—Kakashi
He read over the messily scrawled note, then tore the sheet off the pad and crumbled it in a fist. There’s no way Gai could read that and not have about a billion questions. Especially with how they had relied on each other through the years, from Dai’s death to Rin’s, this wouldn’t be remotely good enough to get Gai to stay away.
He sat down on the couch again, tapping the pen absentmindedly against the faded lined paper. What do you say to someone to convince them to be done with you completely?
When the key scraped into the lock, he froze.
The door swung wide open, Gai slumping into the apartment. His jumpsuit was nicked and torn and his hair didn’t have its usual luster. He was clearly exhausted, though not chakra exhausted. Kakashi felt the familiar pangs of panic begin to hit—how was he back so soon?
“Hey, ‘Kashi. The client blew the mission terms totally out of proportion—he made it seem like it’d be almost an A rank, and instead it was like a grueling C rank. We’re still not sure if the pay will be adjusted accordingly, but Ebisu is arguing it shouldn’t be because we did still run into trouble—Stone ninja near the border tried to take Chouza out. Recognized him somehow, but no worries, Konoha’s magnificent Green Beast was on the scene and we handled them without any major issues.” He grinned and flexed, posing for a moment before relaxing now that he had reached his destination and sliding his vest off and onto the hook by the door.
“How have you been? You eaten yet? Yakiniku is running a special according to Chouza—he asked me to join him for a post-mission meal and I told him I’d have to swing by here and see if you wanted to tag along. You like their short rib, right? Or are you still on the vegetarian kick?”
It never failed to impress Kakashi how Gai could fill a space, whether it be with his words, his personality, or his posing. No matter how he did it, though, it always was genuine and warm, and it was nearly impossible to maintain the solemn composure he frequently fronted. They made a nice contrast as a pair. Shame they would never have the chance to explore the friendship further.
He looked down at the crumpled paper on the ground and kicked it under the couch, setting the pad and pen aside. Unfortunately, he was going to have to explain in person.
He walked past Gai without making eye contact, the other man stepping out of his way without resistance. He lifted the vest off the hook next to his own vest, brought it briefly to his own chest, and immediately regretted it when the scent of his rival slammed into him. Once again, he shook his head vigorously, then shoved the vest back at Gai.
“Get out.”
He laughed, taking the vest back and slipping it on without understanding. “Want yours as well?” he asked, reaching for the door.
Kakashi felt flushed again, realizing that Gai meant for them to get dinner together. He walked back into the small living room, keeping his back to the door.
“Don’t need it. Get out.”
Gai’s laugh died in his chest, questions rising to the surface. “I… You okay? Did something happen while I was gone? Your investigation results? I told Ibiki to send word if they made the announcement, that asshole—”
“No, Gai. Nothing happened. I just…” Kakashi swallowed and felt his heart frost over. “Just did some thinking. Realized I’m better off without you.”
He scoffed. “Very funny, Kakashi. Come on, grab a jacket or something, Chouza said he’d wait on me to get back.”
“I mean it, Gai. You’re holding me back. The stupid challenges, do you think I actually care? I’ve always been stronger than you, and now that I’ve got the Sharingan, it’s comical, competing against you. I can see all your moves from miles away. You broadcast like a bull. You’re loud, annoying, and a useless ninja. I want you out of my life.”
There was silence for more than a full minute. It might have been as long as the two of them had gone without speaking, ever. Then Gai crossed to Kakashi in two steps, grabbing his left shoulder and spinning him around to face him.
“I know you’re not saying all that ‘cause you mean it, Kakashi. Look me in the eyes and think about this.”
Kakashi steeled himself, making full eye contact with the single grey eye. “Why don’t you think about it, Gai? Honestly? What kind of a ninja can’t even use ninjutsu? Everyone’s just humoring you and letting you make a fool of yourself. You’re a walking lesson in how to not be a shinobi.”
Gai blinked hard, his eyes beginning to shimmer. He cocked his head to the side, his grip on his rival’s shoulder only strengthening.
“’Kashi, I know things are hard for you. I know your brain lies to you sometimes. It’s okay. Listen, we’ll stay here tonight, I’ll cook, we can watch a movie or something, I’ll keep watch so you can sleep and we’ll talk more in the morning. There’s no pressure. I care about you, Kakashi. Let me help you.”
His eyes were swimming now, the passion making tears roll slowly down his face. The silver-haired man refused to move or answer. Swallowing, he made one last effort to persuade him. “Kakashi… please. Don’t do this. I love you.”
Kakashi’s heart, freeze dried, now shattered, crumbling into a powder and blowing away on a light breeze. Of course Gai loved him, and he loved Gai, but could Gai really mean that he… could he love him the way?—
Impossible.
No. Of course not. And even if he did, that just put him in all the more danger.
His resolve strengthened, he scowled back. “Fuck off, Gai. A ninja that only uses taijutsu is useless in battle. Don’t you remember how your dad died? Couldn’t save himself, could barely save you. What did you even do to try and help him?”
He was grateful for the fist that slammed into his jaw, shutting him up and knocking him into the wall.
“Fuck off, Hatake.”
He only dimly registered the door slamming, and possibly coming off its’ hinges. After a beat, a glint of silver flew through the air and lodged into the wall directly opposite the door. Slowly, he gathered himself up and limped over to it, realizing with a sharp ache that it was the key to his apartment. Turning to the mirror propped near the door, he stared down the version of him with grey circles under his eyes, thumbing at the blood growing at the corner of his mouth.
Friend-Killer Kakashi was starting to sound more like him by the moment.

A Kunoichi’s Betrayal (Part 2) || {NSFW} Kakashi x Reader x Obito/Tobi
Tumblr media
For everyone that has been waiting patiently for it... it’s finally here. @chidori-mint and I bring you the second part to A Kunoichi’s Betrayal ❤😘 We hope you all enjoy and we hope it was worth the wait.
Find part one here!
Pairing: Kakashi x Reader x Obito/Tobi
Summary: Just when you decide to finally close a painful chapter in your life and to embrace a fresh start, someone, from your past will come to face you again
A/N: Rin does not exist in the AU.
Warnings: angst, major character death in beginning, smut, unprotected sex, non-con, violence, language
Word Count: 4.5k
*Present Day: Kakashi’s Home*
The sky was pitch black. The leaves in the trees started to rustle as the cold wind blew, that’s when Kakashi heard a muffled cry.
"You're coming with me, princess…" It was a very familiar voice. He turned his back, and the sight of you made his eyes grow wide. The masked man from the Akatsuki carried your limp body, riddled in drying blood and bruises. Your eyes found him, "Ka-Kakashi…" your voice was weak. "H-help.. me.."
Kakashi struggled to move. His body was frozen. He couldn't move his feet. He tried to call your name but no sound came from his lips. "She belongs with me…" Tobi and Y/n started to slowly fade away.
"NO!!!"
Kakashi woke up, catching his breath. Sweat beads dripped from his forehead. It was another nightmare. Night after night he’s been haunted by these dreams. It was always the same dream. Seven weeks have passed and they still didn't have a lead on your whereabouts. He was growing desperate. He blamed himself for not being able to protect you.
Where are you now, y/n?
A loud knock from his door made him jump. "It's Gai, Kakashi. Open up!"
*Seven weeks ago*
“I promised him I’d protect you Y/n. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do, even if it takes my life.”
You woke up from a dream as those words ran through your head. A heavy arm rested on your stomach and warm breath in your ear as you laid awake. You opened your eyes and turned your head to the side. Obito was on his stomach still fast asleep beside you. His face was scarred but still; he looked beautiful. You let out a heavy sigh. It was still hard to believe that he was here with you. After all this time; he was alive.
"Hello, dollface." He greeted you with a warm voice. "That was the first time I’ve slept in peace for years."
You lifted his arm from your body, "I have to get back to Kakashi." You stood up from the bed and turned your back on him, collecting all your abandoned clothes on the floor. Obito couldn't help but stare at your naked body.
He chuckled as he rolled over onto his back, his hands resting on the back of his head. His toned upper body was perfectly in view. "Really, princess? We just reconciled and your first thought is that traitor?"
"Kakashi is not a traitor. He used to be your best friend."
"Best friend?" He scoffed. " After what happened with the two of you? After sleeping with his best friend's girlfriend? I don't think so, princess. Best friends don’t do that." He slowly slipped out of bed to grab his pants.
"It wasn’t his fault, Obito. All the times I felt like giving up, he was there! Every time I felt scared, he made me feel safe again! All the times I mourned for you, he was beside me! Your death brought emptiness in my life. And guess what? He filled it with love!" You yelled at him as you tried to hold back your tears.
"Are you trying to justify Kakashi?" He was now annoyed. "He betrayed me. He knew how much I loved you! How dare he steal you away from me?!"
"Love me? You faked your death and never even tried to reach me. And why? Because you love me?"
"Okay. You deserve the truth."
"Fucking finally. Better start telling me now, Obito."
Obito started to tell you how he survived years ago from the incident in the bridge and how a man had helped him and tended to his wounds. And that in return, he had to carry out a certain plan.
"That man is a psycho, Obito. He's just using you. Isn't it obvious?"
"Y/n, I told you. I will build a better world for us. Our plan is the perfect plan. Can't you see it? I'm doing this for you! For us!" He held your hand and gently tugged you closer to him.
"How is that better? You’ll be putting humanity in danger? And you're doing this for me? Do you even hear yourself, Obito?" You can't help but cry. You can't believe the words coming from him. "Where has the old Obito gone? The one who aspired to be the Hokage?!"
"Let me ask you this Y/n, do you love me?"
"You know I do. I wouldn't be here if I didn't. I love you, Obito and it hurts so much. I'm already here, what more could you possibly want?"
Your words struck him like lightning. You cupped his face in your hands and stared at him.  "Am I not enough?" You whispered.
He leaned lower, his forehead touching yours. "You're all I need y/n."
"Then I will stay by your side. For good."
"Are you sure? You'll be branded a rogue ninja.”
"Call off the plan you have with this man. I’ll leave everything behind and start a new life with you. Can you do that for me?"
He suddenly brushed his lips to yours. "Everything I do is for you, y/n. Anything you ask."
*Present Day: Village Hidden In The Leaves*
Tsunade had summoned Kakashi to her office. Along with him were Gai and Yamato.
“I gathered you here because I have many reports that two members of the Akatsuki were spotted in Amegakure. And one of them was the masked man that goes by the name of Tobi.” Tsunade said.
“Two members? Can that be Y/n?” Gai asked.
“Based on the reports, both of them were wearing black cloaks with red clouds on it. But they weren’t able to distinguish if the other member was a male or a female. We can’t assume Tobi has Y/n locked up somewhere. We have to assume the worst. We have to assume that Y/n chose the join the --”
“No. Please... Don’t even finish that sentence, my lady.” Kakashi interrupted. “I know Y/n, she would never aid a criminal.”
“I understand where you’re coming from, Kakashi. But you may want to look at this.” Tsunade pulled her drawer open then placed a headband on top of her desk. He knew exactly whose it was. It was Y/n’s. He recognized the familiar scratches upon it from their missions together. Kakashi took it with trembling hands. The village’s symbol has horizontal slash over it signifying that the holder of the headband had cut ties with their village. He grasped it tightly in his hands.
“My lady, whether you allow me or not, I will go after her. I have to get her back,” he said.
“I already anticipated that. That’s why I asked for Gai and Yamato here as well. They can accompany you with this mission.” Tsunade stood up and walked towards them. “I suggest you all get ready to leave in two hours. This Tobi character might move again. This is our chance to rescue Y/n.”
*Present Day: Village Hidden In The Rain*
It was midnight when Obito and Y/n reached the Akatsuki hideout in Amegakure. It was in the highest tower in the village.
“We’re safe here.” “This village is so gloomy.” Y/n walked around exploring their shared bedroom. She stared at the dark skies through the window. “It’s like the skies are crying nonstop.”
Y/n felt Obito's warm body against her back. His hands gripped her waist. "Maybe we can do something to warm up?"
Y/n turned around to face him. "Hey, I know what you're thinking! You sex fiend. I'm having a warm shower first." Y/n smirked at him as she headed towards the bathroom, not bothering to lock the door.
You started to unbutton your cloak and slowly peeled it off your body dropping it on the cold tiles of the bathroom floor. Next came your panties letting them pool down to your feet as you stepped out of them. You stepped in and turned on the shower, the warm water trickled down your cold skin. You tried to relax your tense body as your eyes clenched shut.
You let out a gasp as you felt a hard wall of muscle press against you back. "You called me a sex fiend, princess…" He whispered in your ear as his hands reached your breasts, gently pinching your nipples. You let a moan escape your lips.
He pressed his body against you harder, your breast pressed up against the tile as you felt his erect cock press between the cheeks of your ass. "I could never ever get enough of you." He sucked at the skin on your shoulder. "This is how I want it to be." His nails dug hard into your hips. "I could have my way with you anytime I want. Any way I want."
"Fuck, Obito!" You whined at him.
You arched you back as he continued to grind himself against your ass. "So good for me." He lifted your chin to face him. He kissed you, rough and wild. You kissed him back as your hand tugged on his hair.
He groaned as he broke the kiss. "Let me show you, how this fiend can make you come so hard you'll see stars." His rough hands roamed everywhere, sliding down your wet skin. He slapped your ass making you moan harshly. His fingers reached for your pelvis as he felt you grind yourself back against his throbbing cock.
Obito parted your legs with his knee. His cock slipping and settling between your thighs. You tried to guide him towards your aching entrance. He grunted as the tip touched your wet folds. You arched you back further as he sunk himself in your tight cunt. "My princess is so needy." He smirked, leaning back to watch you grind against him. "So tight. Almost suffocating.”
He felt your walls tightening against him. He gripped your hips, "Stand still, princess.." He rammed into your cunt. You stood on your tiptoes as he hit all the right spots. His grip held you firmly, preventing you from slipping against the tiles underneath.
"You're so perfect y/n." Each thrust of his hips pressing you harder against the wall and sending you closer to that euphoric high.
"Baby, I can't. I'm so close!"
"Come on, princess, come now!" Your body tensed and shuddered beneath him as your orgasm shattered you. He growled from within his chest as he spilled ropes of his hot seed inside your quivering pussy.
The room filled with steam from the warm shower mixed with heavy panting from you two as you fought for your breath.
*Team Kakashi: Outskirts of Amegakure*
The group had moved fast. Kakashi’s haste to get to you was probably what was fueling that. When they finally reached the outskirts of Amegakure the three of them were out of breath. Kakashi couldn’t ignore the desperate feeling in his chest. All the wanted to do was get you back. He wanted to bring you back home, to where you belonged. He just wanted to feel his arms around you once again. Just the thought of never seeing you again gave him an uneasy feeling in his chest.
Gai watched him, never seeing this side of a Kakashi before. Kakashi had never let himself be so vulnerable, especially around his rival. Gai had never realized how bad Kakashi had had his feeling for you. “Kakashi, are you sure that you’re going to be able to do this?” The blatant worry on his voice made Kakashi stand at attention and listen. “I know there’s a chance that the other Akatsuki member isn’t Y/n, but what if it is? I want to make sure you can be objective about this.” He sighed. “If she’s truly gone over to them and we can’t convince her to come back with us then we have to treat her like one of them-” Gai let his thoughts trail off as he saw Kakashi’s whole body grew tense.
He lashed out at him. He had never meant to do it, but he just couldn’t picture you going over to the dark side. “We’re bringing her back. Worry about yourself Gai, don’t worry about me. I can handle myself!” After the words left his lips he dropped his head. What was happening to him?
Gai furrowed his brow. “I know that was just because you’re worried. I won’t hold that against you Kakashi, but you need to look at the big picture here. The Akatsuki is our enemy, we have orders to eliminate the members no matter what it takes.”
A lump grew in Kakashi’s throat and the words he wanted to say escaped him. He shook his head, clearing the thoughts that riddled it. “Let’s just make our plan already. We have to get moving.”
Yamato, who had been silent this whole time, finally spoke up. “No, we’re not going anywhere until we know that you do what might have to be done. The Akatsuki is a threat to the Leaf Village and we have to treat ALL of their members that way. I never got to meet Y/n and don’t get me wrong, she seems like a good person, but you saw the headband as clearly as we did. She’s a rogue ninja now.”
Kakashi stared at the ground. The tears that were welling in his eyes were threatening to come out. Gai approached him and put a hand on his shoulder. “We know how much you love her Kakashi. We know that she means the world to you and you took such good care of her after Obito’s death, but it might be time for you to let that all go.”
“I can’t do that. If I do I wouldn’t be doing what Obito asked me to do. I promised to protect her for the rest of her life and that’s exactly what I’m going to do.” His voice cracked as he spoke to them. The thought of the betrayal toward you if he had ever laid a finger on you kept a tightness in his chest.
Gai cleared his throat, feeling a lump growing in the back of his own throat. He had known you for a long time, he had just as hard a time as Kakashi in believing you had turned against the village you had loved so much.
Kakashi looked up at the both of them, his face red from holding back his tears. “As I said, let’s just make this plan and get moving. We might not be too late, maybe they haven’t corrupted her yet.”
*Present Day: Village Hidden In The Rain*
You slowly climbed from the couch, watching the rainfall all day was beginning to get tiring. You just wanted to get out of the house. You didn’t care what the two of you would do, you needed some change of scenery. Obito sat across from you, his gaze never once leaving yours. You sighed and stood from the couch, as you stood a wave of nausea ran over you. You steadied yourself as dizziness clouded your vision.
When you grabbed the side of the couch Obito popped up from his chair. His hands grasped your waist as he helped steady you. “Are you alright darling?”
When the dizziness subsided you placed a hand on his shoulder and smiled. “I’m fine Obi… really.”
His concern never left his face as you walked out of his grip and toward the bedroom. An early night was in your future. As you changed out of your clothes and threw on one of his baggy t-shirts your thoughts were focused on one thing and one thing only. Or one person to be more precise.
 Kakashi Hatake.
As you laid down into the bed and covered yourself to keep the cool air from forming goosebumps on your skin you felt guilty. Here you were, with the man you had once loved more than anything, and the only person you could think of was Kakashi. You quickly shook your head as a migraine started to become present. You groaned and pulled a pillow over your head, letting out a quiet scream, hoping that Obito hadn’t heard you in the other room.
When sleep finally overcame you your dreams were the same. Your dreams wouldn’t let you think of anything other than him. And they say that if you dream about someone it’s because they fell asleep thinking about you. But that’s when you thought about it… Kakashi probably wasn’t getting any sleep. Your guilt came back over you, bringing you out of deep sleep. Obito’s figure was now sleeping soundly next to you, a sight you would never get used to.
More nausea washed over you, this time forcing you out of bed and down the hall to the bathroom. As you leaned over the toilet and emptied the content of your stomach realization hit you… It had been a couple of months now since you had seen aunt flow. You and Obito had been so busy trying to get the Akatsuki to welcome you in that you hadn’t even noticed until now.
You slowly backed up against the bathroom wall and slid down it. With your head in your hands, you watched the floor. Your emotions were now soaring. You were angry that of all times this would happen now. You were excited to be thinking about taking this journey. You were sad as you thought about how you would have to explain this to Obito… about how there was a possibility that it wasn’t his, however small it might be.
No. This wasn’t the time. You had to wait. You had to get through your next mission before you could say anything.
You slowly stood back up and made your way to the bed again, climbing in and snuggling next to Obito. This time tho… sleep didn’t come so easily.
 *Entering Amegakure: Team Kakashi*
Kakashi, Gai, and Yamato slowly walked through the village, trying not to bring attention to themselves. As the people around them started to watch Kakashi’s nervousness started to grow. He turned his head slightly to Gai and spoke low. “Do you think they’re getting suspicious? I mean… It’s not like they announced that Leaf Ninja would be coming through.”
Gai looked around slowly and nodded. “Yea.” His words were uneasy as he nudged Yamato and nodded in the direction of a couple of Rain Ninja. “We’re being watched.”
Yamato cleared his throat as he looked over and spotted them. They were attempting to hide in the covers of the trees, but they hadn’t realized how experienced the three Leaf Ninja that were here were. “Time for us to intervene.”
Gai looked over at Kakashi and stopped. “We’ll take out those guys, you get to Y/n.” Yamato took over in the other direction, forming a wood clone to help them out.
Gai split after him after Kakashi nodded back and Kakashi jumped onto the buildings. Not the best place to find cover, but he had to move fast and this was the best way. He threw his arms behind him and started running.
As he jumped from rooftop to rooftop he saw a blur out of the corner of his eyes. Another Rain Ninja had come from the side. He stopped as the ninja sailed in front of him. When the ninja turned back to him he was already forming a lightning blade in his hand. No one was going to stop him from finding you.
He ran forward, his lightning blade out in front of him, ready to hit the ninja standing in his way. His opponent just barely dodged as Kakashi’s attack landed in a tower behind him. The man was quick, but Kakashi was faster. Kakashi’s foot connected with the man’s back and threw him into the side of the next building. When the man slid down and landed in a sitting position Kakashi placed a kunai to his throat and pushed him against the wall with his knee.
“Tell me where the one called Tobi is.” There was a growl to his voice as he demanded it from him. “I’m not going to wait. Tell me now!”
The ninja had a look of terror on his face as he spotted Kakashi’s Sharingan. He stuttered as he waited to see what the copy ninja would do. “Ka-Ka-Kakashi of the Sharingan.”
“Quit stuttering my name and tell me what I want to know.” He pushed his knee into his chest further.
“Okay, okay.” The man struggled under Kakashi’s force. “I’ll tell you.” As Kakashi eased up the man drew in a sharp breath. “They have a hidden base in the forest beyond the village. I can take you there if you like.”
A familiar voice spoke behind Kakashi as Gai and Yamato approached. Gai stood next to Kakashi and crossed his arms. “The other two are out of commission. This must be the one that split while we were engaged with the other two.”
Kakashi took his knee off him but kept the kunai to his throat. “Stand up, show us where it is, but if you so much as give a hint to anyone that you’re a hostage I’ll hit you with a Chidori.”
The man swallowed hard and stood back up, turning and walking forward, the point of the kunai in his back, hidden under Kakashi’s sleeve.
 * * * * * *
As they reached the door of the hideout the man was eager to be free. Kakashi finally removed the kunai and stared daggers at the man. If anyone comes after us I’m going to assume that you were the one that did it and that won’t end well for you.”
The man nodded quickly and ran off without a second glance behind him.
Gai placed his hand on the rock wall that stopped them from entering, his voice low so that if there were people on the other side of the structure they wouldn’t hear him. “Are you ready for this Kakashi?”
Kakashi nodded and that determined look that he wore so well spread across his face. “I can sense her chakra. She’s here.” A Chidori started to form in his hand and the other’s stepped back, knowing full well what he was about to do. As his energy focused and the chakra formed he ran forward, slamming his hand into the rock and blasting a hole through it. Bits of rock rained down on them as they entered the hideout.
Obito turned quickly and when he met the eyes of the fellow Leaf Ninja that he knew so well he smirked. “Well, well. Back for round two are you?”
You swallowed hard, a lump now forming in your throat, making it hard to breathe. Kakashi ignored Obito and looked to you. “Are you alright Y/n?”
You nodded slowly, still trying to wrap your head around what was going on. No one was supposed to be able to find you here, so how had Kakashi done it?
Obito took a kunai out of his pouch and pointed it toward Kakashi. “Don’t worry about her, she’s just fine Kakashi. Let’s dance.”
An amused exhalation came from Kakashi as he took one of his own out. Still unaware of who this man could be, though he had his suspicions, he was ready to fight. He wouldn’t let him lay another finger on you. “Just back away from her first. Then we’ll do this.”
Obito stepped forward and laughed deviously. “Oh, I’ll do that no problem.” He pushed you backward and out of the line of fire. “Minato-Sensei would be so upset and disappointed if we harmed her.”
That sealed the deal for Kakashi. Kakashi’s eyes narrowed as he stared back up at him. “Obito. I should have known.”
Obito rushed him, his kunai just about to connect with Kakashi’s arm as he jumped out of the way. He was distracted. He had to keep himself together. Your heart pounded against your chest as you watched the two men that you loved fly about the hideout. Kunai clinked as they fought as hard as they could against each other. Your feet were moving before you could even stop yourself. “Stop it!”
As you approached the two of them the fighting came to an abrupt stop. They pushed off of each other and stared at you, both afraid you would get hurt. Obito was the first to speak. “You have two choices here Y/n.” Your eyes grew wide as his harsh tone. “Either you leave with me and I give up my plans and spare the copy ninjas life,” He pointed his kunai at Kakashi. “Or I kill him if you choose him over me and I carry out my plans.”
You couldn’t believe the position that Obito was putting you in. You watched as the pleading eyes of Kakashi watched you. You wanted to be with Obito, you had loved him so much, and you always will. But you also wanted to be with Kakashi. He had been there for you through so much. You sighed and looked at the ground, squeezing your eyes shut, too afraid to look up at Kakashi. “I’ll go with you Obito.”
A laugh erupted from Obito as he looked between Kakashi and you. “Very well.” Obito did something you never would have thought he would do. He charged Kakashi again, kunai at the ready, aimed right for his heart. “I’ll kill him anyway. He’s in my way.”
You grabbed a Kunai from your pouch and grasped it, holding it directly in front of your stomach, ready to push it through if need be. You let out a scream. “Obito, I swear I’ll do it!”
Obito stopped in his tracks at the blood-curdling scream as you felt every single eye on you. The man looked back at you and his eyes shot open as far as they would go. “Y/n, what are you doing?”
“Just stop.” The tears were rolling down your cheeks before you had even felt them. “I don’t want the father of my child to have blood on his hands. Especially not someone he considered a friend.”
Everyone in the room froze as they realized why your kunai was pointed to your stomach. You could see the worry in Kakashi’s eyes as he watched you threaten not only your baby’s life but your own.
Kakashi stepped forward some, but as you moved the kunai closer he stepped back again. “Y/n, you don’t want to do this. That’s not how you are. You aren’t that type of person.”
“I’ll be that type of a person if I need to be. Now stop fighting. I can’t take it anymore!” You hollered at the both of them, hoping that they would listen.

I am seized by a fatal need for courtroom ninja drama fic
But not serious courtroom drama. I'm talking Phoenix Wright style Nonsense.
(Some of this was provided by the folks over in @sloaners‘ server, but the bulk of it was me spitballing nonsense at people who actually know the games, which I do not. I do paraphrase a few times to make it more feasible as a tumblr post/fic concept, rather than a rapidfire text conversation.)
Or one of those like. Reality TV paternity test things? But specifically in my mind the people involved in the actual paternity are a married couple and someone that joined them to be their third, and Clan Elders are throwing a fit about how the baby might not be the heir by blood! while the actual parents are like "I could not care less, this is our child, all three of us, please stop getting involved."
HashiMitoMada would be a VERY good option for the paternity nonsense, mostly because I can see Madara screeching at his own elders about how he already said Izuna would be his heir and he's not changing his mind!
Tobirama is just begging the paternity test to work faster off-screen because he's the only person with the machines to make it happen.
(Hashirama is just. Moping in a corner.)
"I just had to INVENT a paternity test that works before the birth! I had to figure out how to test amniotic fluid! If you assholes make me do something this stupid on such short notice again, I will be digging some shallow graves!" "...for who?" "I haven't decided yet."
Anyway, jumping back to like a Phoenix Wright-style murder investigation.
The victim was Danzo. Even the prosecution isn't actually that interested in making sure someone gets arrested, but they're legally obligated to do at least try. A bunch of people all acting really suspicious about who killed him. There is at least one shitty fake mustache-on-glasses disguise to provide a paper-thin alibi.
WAIT The other thing this gives us is ninjas in three-piece-suits but half of them wear the suits wrong. I’m talking mismatched buttons. The wrong way of tying their tie. Sewn-on-cufflinks. This is Naruto, for instance.
Tobirama would wear it properly, except he's rushing about in a lab coat, screaming at everyone to get out of his way because he's The Entire Forensics Team.
(This is the part where I have to confess that I have only seen the live-action movie of Phoenix Wright, as I don't game, so I just have the live action and tumblr osmosis.)
At this point, of course, we gotta ask: Who is the most Belligerent Witness And who is the Helpful™️ Witness that's super enthusiastic but entirely useless
I can see, say, Mito being a solid witness that both defense and prosecution are really thankful for.
Modern gen you have like... Sasuke and Neji are both incredibly belligerent witnesses. Neji at least is polite about it but pulls the "only answers with the absolute minimum of information."
Lee and Gai would have the over enthusiasm but forget to say actual vital testimony until pressed, and Naruto would love to help but might not be entirely sure what the case even is.
Shikamaru falls asleep when the lawyers consult their partners. Prosecution A consults Prosecution B for thirty-seven seconds, then turns around and the witness is asleep at the stand.
Tobi (as in Obito with mask) is an incredibly frustrating witness. They have to declare a recess just so all the lawyers can recover their blood pressure. "Can we please get someone up on the stand with this guy as a handler? I'm--I'm going to explode."
Gaara: Helpful. Polite. Answers with detail. Answers the spirit of the question as well as the letter. Includes more detail. That's too much detail. Gaara please stop telling us about the sounds that bones make.
His testimony just drags on forever.
Ninken can and will take the stand! Pakkun even enjoys it! Some ninken require translators.
ABURAME TRANSLATING FOR A RANDOM GIANT CENTIPEDE THAT WITNESSED A MURDER IN THE FOREST OF DEATH
There are arguments about whether or not the testimony can count since nobody else can confirm the translation except Other Aburame so how do they know the Aburame aren't part of the coverup.
"Okay, so this Danzo guy had like fifty shell companies but I think I found the route that leads back to him?" "Nah, that one goes to a guy that died eighty years ago that's still collecting pensions: his family lied and said he was still alive for the money." "Fuck!"
Also I just. I love the idea of Sasuke and Madara being the exact opposite kind of belligerent witness.
Also, Orochimaru answers with pretty much the exact kind of wording as Gaara, but where Gaara is trying to be helpful and provide detail for the sake of the case, and failing to see that it's maybe not necessary, Orochimaru just wants to see people squirm. ...similar thing happens with Sakura and Kabuto. Similar phrasing, very different energy.
I keep picturing all of Team Taka as part of Forensics and Evidence Collecting ajshakshjd
Juugo, holding up a rabbit: I found a witness.
Karin joins forensics and Tobirama nearly weeps from joy until he finds her criminal record "Shit, that was supposed to get thrown out when I turned eighteen."
Tobirama: I asked for an assistant, not a criminal. Karin: I'm on parole. Tobirama: That makes things worse. Karin: I know how to use a [concerningly advanced machine that I, a business major, cannot name]. Tobirama: ...never mind, I'm keeping you.
Karin: I know how to DNA sequence AND use LA-ICP-MS Tobirama: [weeps with joy]
Suigetsu would be great at blood splatter analysis. ...I think I read somewhere that blood spatter analysis is actually over in 'fake science that's pushed by cops and media but actually doesn't work' BUT apparently it’s in the Ace Attorney games so we’re going to ignore reality a bit. We’ve already got dogs and rabbits and centipedes as witnesses, what’s a bit of blood spatter?
He's also probably really good at cause of death stuff? Like looking at corpse and figuring out how long it took the victim to die, which blow did it, whether any damage was inflicted post-mortem, etc.
Sasuke is usually too busy playing Belligerent Witness but sometimes goes to join Taka for... uh... reasons.
Juugo: [takes the stand] Lawyer: Hey, uh, why's that Uchiha guy with him? The witness-- Judge: No, no, we need Uchiha Sasuke on hand when questioning Expert Animal Handler Juugo. Lawyer: ...why? Judge: Property damage.
(Sasuke as a work partner with Juugo, also moonlighting as a witness/suspect in Danzo's murder.)
One time they need Juugo but can't find him even though court is already in session and he said he'd be here, turns out he was lured away by Kakashi's army of dogs. Kakashi didn't notice until he turned to ask Pakkun if he could help find the missing expert.
Juugo is a decent lab assistant, I think?
Anyway.
Tobirama taking on Team Taka as his forensics team while Orochimaru is... hm... traveling the country to promote his new autobiography, which is outselling the newest Icha Icha to Jiraiya's ire.
Sloane suggested “a case where it's all the Sannin as suspects in a murder. They would be THE WORST, say... the murder of Hanzo.”
To which I suggested “The Sannin are all suspects but the people on trial are the Ame trio, maybe?”
Which garnered the response of “It could be a surprise upset IN COURT that the trio should be on trial.”
We love a court upset.
Suigetsu finds out that the cause of death was actually an entirely natural heart attack, but while he was determining this, the rest of the team and the lawyers found like eight conspiracies by Zetsu, three by Danzo, four by Orochimaru, and an entire network of nonsense by Sasori.
INO IS THE PSYCHIC. I know her thing in canon is reading minds but pls. Ino is Maya. The Spirit Medium.
Is the judge: 1. Hiruzen 2. Hashirama 3. Hagoromo 4. Mifune 5. The Daimyou
(Old dude with authority, optionally easily distracted/questionably competent. I'd have gone for impressive facial hair but only Mifune and Hagoromo have more than like... Hiruzen's weird soul patch.)
It's not a soul patch but I don't know what facial hair is called and I can't just call it a goat beard
Response commentary was as follows: The Daimyou would unfortunately be closer to the personality of the ace attorney judge, more blindly agreeing with things that sound good :joy: Hiruzen could be fun if only for the competing facial hair for a beard, yes xD Hagoromo would possibly be most buckwild tho WELCOME TO MOON COURT
I managed to get this far with like... NO idea who the judges were except “IDK maybe Kakashi?” but consider:
...HashiMada rival lawyers
Dropping over to Izuna vs. Touka for when Hashirama and Madara inevitably become suspects of something or other themselves and have to be witnesses.
(Tobirama's too busy running blood tests, Anija, let Touka handle it, she's better at people anyway.)
...Hashirama is like. Marginally more put-together than Madara, right? So that... makes him Edgeworth... somehow... That feels wrong but Madara as Edgeworth feels even more wrong.
Madara is very into screaming OBJECTION
ALSO consider: Friction when a doctor from a nearby hospital gets called in to provide expert testimony on something because Karin is like "no hey I should be the one doing this" and then she sees how cute Sakura is.
But also at some point Kakashi vs. Gai for a nonsense case. Their personalities are both VERY FUN for this sort of thing.

Surprise Party!  A Nejiten One-shot
"I get what you two are saying but I just don't understand why you need to stay in my apartment until I get back?" Tenten squints at her two teammates, standing in her doorway. The boys knew it was going to be hard to get past Tenten's strong sense of intuition and skepticism, and it's already not looking so good.
"Because..." Lee starts, fixing his green turtleneck that suddenly feels super tight around his neck.
"You're right. We don't need to stay here. We just wanted to hang out with you afterwards but it's fine. We'll see you tomorrow." Neji grabs Lee's arm, who is sending him a confused look. This wasn't part of the plan.
"Ouf, don't have to be such a grump, Neji. You guys can stay. I'll be back in an hour." Tenten slips on her shoes and pushes past the boys, before abruptly stopping in her tracks and pointing a finger in their faces. "Don't go snooping through my room. I will find out if you do." And with that, she leaves.
"They don't call you a genius for no reason!" Lee exclaims, patting his friend on the back.
"Hn. Let's just get this place set up."
"What if she comes back and we're not ready?"
"Don't worry, she won't come back for a while. I made sure of it."
----------------------------------
As Tenten briskly walks through the village center, she thinks back on how odd Lee and Neji were acting earlier. What's even odder is Gai Sensei urgently needing to see her. Usually, he would just stop by her apartment to talk to her. He never insisted she walk all the way over to his place before. The only times she's been at his house are when he demanded the team taste whatever he's recently learned how to make. Tenten never complained when that happened though, Maito Gai is a good cook.
After 10 minutes of walking through slush and snow, and Tenten cursing the weather every couple of minutes, she finally makes it to his house.
"My precious, youthful flower! You look so cold, please come inside." Gai opens his front door as wide as possible and makes room for her to enter. Tenten takes a good look at him, trying to detect anything wrong from his appearance, in attempt to figure out why he wanted to see her. She concludes that he looks normal.
"What's wrong, Gai Sensei?"
"Wrong? Nothing is wrong!"
He leads her to his living room where Kakashi is seated on the floor, nose deep in a book. Not that you could actually see his nose though.
"Hi Kakashi Sensei." She waves to him with a smile, but deep down she's confused on what is going on.
"Hello Tenten." His eyes squint in a smile and he closes his book. "I'm sorry for what Gai is about to tell you. I told him not to bother you but he insisted."
"Oh?" She frowns, turning her attention to her teacher.
"I needed you to be the judge of something. Earlier I made a passing comment about how pretty I would be as a woman and Kakashi here turned it down immediately..."
-----------------------
Lee feels his lungs starting to hurt with each breath he blows into the balloon in his hand. After the 15th one, he collapses on the sofa and takes a break.
"We have a balloon pump. Didn't I tell you that?" Neji smirks, placing a birthday banner from one wall to another.
"Yes, but I know my lungs are far superior than any pump. I can do it without the tool!" Lee exclaims, standing right back up and reaching for another balloon.
"Slow down. You're gonna hurt yourself." Neji mumbles, getting down from a chair. Of course his teammate doesn't listen, he rarely does especially when he has something to prove.
"No time to waste!"
Lee eventually finishes blowing up all the balloons and watches Neji move Tenten's coffee table to the side to make more room.
"I've never seen you put this much effort into anything" Lee says, cocking his head to the side.
"It's for Tenten, so." Neji replies but immediately realizes what he said and blushes a bit.
"You're right. She deserves the best."
Neji nods in agreement and continues with the table.
The two boys move in silence as they decorate the entire apartment with birthday decor but a sudden knock on the door makes them both jump.
Lee looks at Neji in terror, his wide eyes going back and forth between the door and his friend.
"It's probably just Hinata with the cake." Neji whispers.
He walks over to the door and opens it a small crack. He was right, it was his cousin.
"I brought the cake." Hinata says with a smile.
--------------------------
Tenten cannot believe she spent almost the entire day judging how two grown men looked as women. She cannot remove the sight of Gai Sensei in a short dress and awful makeup from the back of her mind. Tomorrow was her birthday but she might have to spend the whole day rinsing her burning eyes out. You thought his eyebrows were hairy? You should see his legs.
Don't get her started on Kakashi. She wasn't expecting he would dress up in drag too but his competitive streak was far too strong for him not to do so. Tenten was a bit confused when he walked out with his mask still on. It defeated the whole purpose but she had to admit he had a nice figure when he came out wearing a tight dress. She was a bit jealous.
When it was finally time to make her decision she ruled it as a tie and ran out the door as fast as she could before they even had the chance to pester her.
When she's almost halfway back to her house, she breaks out into a fit of laughter as she thinks back on what just transpired. She's quite satisfied in her response. Serves them right, making her rush to the house just to be the judge of a stupid competition.
Tenten finally reaches her home, and places a hand on her doorknob, but stops turning it when she hears some giggles on the other side.
Is that a girl's voice? Did they use my apartment as a bachelor pad?
She wastes no time in opening the door, trying to catch Neji and Lee in the act but instead she enters and it's all dark.
"Huh?"
Suddenly the lights are turned on and Tenten gasps when she sees her apartment has been decorated with colourful balloons, banners, and streamers.
She steps back, shocked, when her friends jump out from behind the couch, armchair, TV stand and some come out from the kitchen.
"SURPRISE!" They all chorus, releasing party poppers and blowing on glittery party whistles.
A hand flies to Tenten's mouth. She takes in everyone. First, she sees Akamaru who is overly stimulated by all the noise and is running laps around her apartment. Then she sees Gai and Kakashi and wonders how they beat her to her own home. Then she sees all the teams. And lastly, she sees Lee and Neji near the back looking smug and satisfied.
"I wasn't expecting this." Tenten shakes her head softly in amazement and awe. "Thank you guys so much!"
She doesn't want to cry in front of all these people, so she bites down hard on the inside of her cheek. She tells the party that she's going to get changed, since she's seriously underdressed and a bit frumpy.
When she reaches her room, she closes the door and slides down it. She finally lets out her tears.
No one has ever done something like this before. Tenten never even celebrated her birthday before joining Team Gai. She didn't see the point of spending a birthday alone, she had no family.
A gentle knock on the door interrupts her thoughts and she wipes her eyes before opening the door.
"You were crying?"
Neji.
"Do you not like the party? I can tell everyone to go home." He adds with a look of concern on his face. He places a hand on her upper arm.
"No! I was crying, yes, but only because I was so happy." Looking at Neji and seeing how concerned he was for her, the tears come back.
"Hn. That's odd but I'm glad you're happy."
Tenten grabs a tissue from the box on her bedside table. She sneaks a quick glance at herself in her mirror and groans. "I look so ugly. My eyes are puffy and red."
Neji smiles a bit and Tenten catches it in the reflection. "That's rude ya know."
"I smiled because there's no way you could ever look ugly. It's impossible."
Tenten rolls her eyes but deep down she feels butterflies. The butterflies have been frequenting her stomach a lot lately, all thanks to him.
He takes a step back from the doorway and slowly closes the door.
"Wait!" She shouts out. When she reaches him, Tenten wraps her arms around his shoulders and whispers 'thank you' in his ear.
Neji didn't need a thank you from her. In fact, Neji wanted to thank her instead. Tenten always made all of their birthdays into such a big deal, she makes them feel so special and loved. It's only right they did the same for her.
All Neji wants is for Tenten to know that even though she spent her birthdays alone in the past, as long as he's alive she will never have to experience that ever again. He will make sure of it.
"Anything for you."

Stone Cold Kakashi

Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai
4073 words
for: @tenzoyamato

Kakashi’s mind raced, replaying the meeting with Tsunade-sama continuously. The moment that he had realized this wasn’t a normal mission she was sending Kakashi and Gai on. That she didn’t have an S-ranked missing ninja for them to hunt down and dispose of.
The moment when his stomach had dropped.
Captain Yamato is missing in action.
The rest of the meeting was a blur. He couldn’t recall one second of what had happened until the moment Gai’s hand had come down onto his shoulder, finally pulling him out of his own thoughts. After that his only focus was getting to Tenzo’s apartment to find something for the hounds to sniff, and heading off to find his friend.
Still, the things that Tsunade-sama had said refused to leave him alone. The warnings, the reminders of their missions. It all kept running through his mind as he and Gai followed the hounds in search of Tenzo.
Likely that he is dead.
This is a body retrieval mission.
The enemy cannot get hold of his body or the cells inside of it.
His head was spinning. Was the universe really not done with him yet? Had he not lost enough already?
Landing on the next branch in a long journey, Kakashi reached out to brace himself against the tree when his eyes started to lose focus. There was too much going on in his head. Too many thoughts. Too much worry digging deep into his heart.
It was getting hard to breathe as it all sank in. Tenzo. One of his best friends who had been by his side for years through Anbu and was now helping him work with Team seven. At least, that’s what he was supposed to be doing when Tsunade-sama had given him a solo mission. She’d told him he was the only one who could do it. The only one she trusted.
And now here they were.
“Kakashi?” a voice called out to him from a distance, but it was drowned out by the panic. His heart raced in his chest, pounding so hard that it hurt. His head was spinning and it was getting difficult for him to breathe.
Short, quick breaths were all he could seem to manage. The burning feeling in his throat from a lack of oxygen only made it more difficult to breathe.
Tenzo.
Everything that could go wrong raced through his mind. The image of Tenzo’s dead, bloodied corpse lying on the ground. Them finding Tenzo alive, only for him to be murdered right in front of Kakashi’s eyes. Even the thought of never finding Tenzo at all, and never getting closure to what happened to him. They all hit him one after the other with no break. No moment to breathe and collect himself.
An endless onslaught of everything that terrified him at that moment.
“Kakashi.” This time the voice was closer, but he couldn’t bring himself to look up. His fingers trembled as they came to rest over his eyes, and the nausea settled in. His brain screamed at him for choosing now of all times to start panicking, but there was no escaping it. He couldn’t slow down his breathing, or force his fingers to stop shaking. No matter how hard he tried the nausea wouldn’t subside, and the world continued to spin around him. “Kakashi!”
A hand came down to rest on his shoulder and with a gentle tug he found himself falling forward into the other man’s chest. Almost immediately, Gai’s scent overwhelmed him. Shoving back the thoughts that were busy assaulting his mind, and giving him something else to focus on. Each breath got easier to take as he focused on that smell. Gai’s sweat, the most easily identifiable scent and the only one that he had learned to recognize as what Gai was offering him.
Safety.
“I know you’re scared.” The words were barely audible through the screaming thoughts in his mind, but they managed to break through. Providing him with something to focus on other than the dark thoughts swirling around in his head. “I’m here, Kakashi. Come back to me.”
The more Gai spoke to him, the easier it became to focus. To push away everything that his mind screamed at him and cling to the soft words that left Gai’s mouth. His breathing slowed as Gai walked him through the breathing exercises he had learned years ago after seeing Kakashi’s first panic attack.
“In and out.” He breathed with Gai’s words, waiting for the next order and following it with ease. “You’re doing good, Kakashi. Just keep breathing. In and out.”
A hand settled in his hair. Fingers ran through the short silver strands, pulling him back down to reality. His fingers stopped shaking after a moment, and as Gai continued to talk to him he felt the nausea fading.
“Sorry.” He uttered the weak apology, not bothering to move away from the safety of Gai’s arms. “I’m wasting time.”
“The hounds are still on the trail,” Gai assured him, smiling when he raised his head just enough to look up at him. “Pakkun stayed behind to lead us to them, and we can go when you’re ready. Either way, we’re going to find him.”
“But what if…” Gai narrowed his eyes. “Gai, Tsunade-sama told us this was a body retrieval mission. You know as well as I do what that means.”
“And if that’s all you focus on, we’ll have no chance of turning it into a rescue mission,” Gai argued. “You’ll get stuck here panicking for the next hour. We don’t have the time to sit around and do that today, Kakashi. But I promise you that once we find him, once we have him safe at home, then you can break down. I’ll be there with you. I’ll make sure you’re safe and we’ll be at home. No-one will see. But for now I need you to stay strong. I need ‘Stone cold Kakashi’”
It was rare for Gai to ask him to wear that particular mask. The one that kept down all of the emotions that bubbled inside of him. Which so perfectly covered all of his fear and pain, keeping it hidden away from the world. From everyone around him, except for Gai.
Taking a deep breath, Kakashi closed his eyes and slowly shut down all of his emotions. Just like his Anbu days. When he was never allowed to be anything short of absolutely perfect at his job, he had never taken this mask off. Even if the Hound’s mask was resting on his desk, ‘Stone cold Kakashi’ would still be there.
As soon as he felt the last bit of fear and worry being shoved deep inside of him, he opened his eyes once again. This time when he looked at Gai it was with the same eyes he would have when facing down an enemy.
Emotionless. Calculated. Calm.
“I’m sorry.” Gai’s hand cupped his cheek as he uttered his apology. There was no mask that Gai hated more than this one, but even he understood its uses. “We’ll make it quick, I promise.”
Taking a step back from Kakashi, Gai allowed his gaze to linger for a moment. Making sure that Kakashi was able to stand on his own and was ready for whatever was to come next. When he seemed confident with what he saw, he turned back to the small pug dog waiting for them and nodded his head.
With that, they were off once again. Soaring from tree to tree towards their destination.
Towards wherever it was that they would find Tenzo.
A camp right next to a large river, no more than five enemy shinobi. That’s what Kakashi and Gai had found at the end of a seven hour hunt. When they had finally caught up to the other ninken Kakashi had been expecting a hideout. Perhaps even a heavily guarded village. Something that was worthy of all the worry he had been trying so desperately to ignore while they searched for Tenzo.
Instead they found a small camp so lightly guarded that from where he was hiding he could see Tenzo, arms chained behind his back and blood covering the majority of his body as he sat propped against a large rock.
This was nothing.
“Mist shinobi.” His eyes scanned the area for any sign of hidden shinobi. “The river will be a great asset to them so do whatever you can to keep them away from it.” Gai nodded, his understanding clear as he prepared to move in. “I’ll take the two closest to Tenzo. You take the other three.”
It would be easier for Gai to deal with the ones that were spread out. His speed gave him an advantage over most shinobi, including Kakashi. At least one of them wouldn’t see him coming, and the second wouldn’t have time to properly react before Gai was able to take him down. The third shinobi would be the one that Gai would have to have a proper fight with, and it’s a fight he was certain that Gai would win.
In his case, the two shinobi guarding Tenzo were close enough that he could hit them pretty easily in quick succession, allowing him to focus his attention on Tenzo. They wouldn’t have time to react at all if he attacked correctly, which would be easy with the hounds’ help.
“Pakkun.” The pug dog didn’t need him to explain the plan. Within an instant the dogs scattered in all directions and waited for his signal. “You ready?” He glanced over at Gai, waiting for him to process everything that they were about to do.
“Am I ever not ready?” Kakashi rolled his eyes. Of course that was going to be Gai’s response. “I’d say let’s have a competition, but clearly I’m going to take down more shinobi than you.”
“We can have a competition when we get home,” Kakashi offered as a substitute. “A race to the dango shop after we get Tenzo to the hospital, perhaps.”
“Oh, Kakashi,” Gai’s feet moved into position while he smiled over at the copy nin, “we both know you’re not leaving the hospital room until he’s released.”
“Fair.” Following suit, Kakashi shifted his feet into an attack stance and gave Gai a soft look. An apology for the date nights that he was going to miss while he was worrying over Tenzo. “Try not to take too long.”
His hand shot up, and within an instant the hounds moved in. Pakkun grabbed a mouthful of the shinobi closest to Tenzo, with Bull and Akino joining in to hold him down. As all of the others turned to see why their comrade had screamed out in pain, Kakashi and Gai moved in for the attack.
As he’d suspected it was easy to deal with the two shinobi that had been placed to guard Tenzo. The first one was still dealing with three hound dogs holding him down, and as the second went in to help his comrade, Kakashi showed up with his chidori already charged up for the attack. Within a second the first enemy was down and he could turn his attention to the second as the rest of the hound dogs came to his side.
Glancing towards the area where Gai was fighting, Kakashi noted that one of his targets was already down, and the second had just taken Gai’s foot to the sternum. A hit that Kakashi had no doubt would put the poor bastard out of commission. That left both of them with only one enemy shinobi to defeat. An easy task to take care of.
Turning his attention to Tenzo, Kakashi started making his way towards him, a low whistle the only order he gave to the hounds before the enemies’ screams filled the air.
Tenzo.
His goal was Tenzo and nothing else mattered. He had to make sure that Tenzo was ok. Breathing. Alive.
The screaming died out behind him, leaving only the sound of flesh being ripped apart and teeth digging into bone. He had learned to drown it out when he was six years old and had seen what his hounds were capable of during his first C-rank mission.
Reaching Tenzo’s side, Kakashi knelt down and checked the binding around his arms. Chains that he couldn’t open himself, at least not without hurting Tenzo. Since that wasn’t something he was willing to risk, he pushed aside all thoughts of the chains for the moment and carefully wedged one hand under Tenzo’s legs and the other behind his back.
“You really got yourself into a mess this time, huh, Tenzo?” He spoke as if Tenzo could give him an answer, lifting the mokuton user into his arms and standing up once more. “I thought we agreed neither of us was allowed to get captured ever again after the Sunagakure incident.”
“Sunagakure incident?” Gai’s hand came down to rest on his shoulder, signaling that all of the enemies had officially been dealt with. “You never told me about this one.”
“You would have freaked,” Kakashi responded in a bland tone, his emotions still pushed into the deepest pits of his being. “It took me an hour to convince Tenzo I could get into Sunagakure without getting caught, rescue our week-long teammate who got himself captured during a mission, and get out alive.”
“And?” Glancing back at the taijutsu specialist, Kakashi narrowed his eyes. “Well clearly you made it out alive.”
“I did.” Holding Tenzo closer to his chest Kakashi turned to face Gai, breathing a sigh of relief when he saw that the hounds were already starting to cover up their kill. “After the idiot was seen on the way out and I had to kill five Suna Anbu soldiers in order to get us both out of there alive.”
“So, that was the guy’s last mission with you, right?” An unimpressed look from Kakashi gave Gai the answer he was looking for. “Just making sure.”
Turning his attention down to Tenzo, Gai’s shoulders relaxed just a little. Mission accomplished. Tenzo was alive and safe.
Now they just had to get home.
Kakashi was about to head out, determined to get Tenzo back to Konoha as quickly as possible, when a hand came up to rest against his cheek.
“I’m fine.” He knew Gai could see through his lie. He always did. But right now was not the time for them to be sticking around in the midst of a campsite that they had just decimated. They had no idea when someone might stumble upon the carnage, and their job was to get Tenzo home. “‘Stone cold Kakashi’ is here, as requested.”
Gai winced at the reminder. He always hated being the one to ask Kakashi to put that mask on, even when they both knew it was needed to get the mission done.
Gai’s hand moved upwards, settling in his hair while he took a step forward and gently touched their foreheads together.
No words were spoken, but Kakashi could hear the silent apology that Gai was trying to make. There was no-one who hated ‘Stone cold Kakashi’ more than Gai. No-one else saw the mask for what it was. Protection against the pain deep inside of himself. An act that Kakashi had put on at a young age because it was easier to be thought of as a ruthless shinobi, rather than being known as a broken man.
After a moment Gai took a step back and turned his attention down to Tenzo, his free hand coming up to gently lift the bloody shirt away from the mokuton user’s chest.
“A few cuts and bruises.” His hand traced over the worst one. A deep gash in Tenzo’s side that no doubt accounted for a majority of the blood that stained Tenzo’s clothes. “Other than this one though, he seems fine. Let’s put some distance between us and this camp and we can see what we can do about patching it up until we get back to Konoha.”
Neither of them wasted any more time. Bursting up towards the trees, they started on their way back towards Konoha while the hounds each took position around them. If anyone managed to catch up to them they would have to get through the hounds for an attack, and that wasn’t likely to happen. No-one had ever made it through the hounds alive before, and with so much to protect they weren’t going to let Kakashi down now.
A soft creak roused Kakashi from his sleep, his head lifting up off of the bed that he had rested it on earlier and turning to look back at whoever had interrupted him. Sleepy eyes focused on the green clad shinobi now making his way into the room, a soft smile on his face and two bento boxes in hand.
“Mission report is done.” Rubbing his eyes, Kakashi looked up at Gai when he came to a stop at his side. “Tsunade-sama says that other than the deep gash that we were able to stitch up, there were no major injuries. Yamato should be able to leave by the end of the week, but he’ll only be on missions with Team Seven for a while.”
That was the first good news Kakashi had gotten since Tsunade-sama had given them their mission. Tenzo didn’t need to be going on any more solo missions for a while. Not after what he had been through.
Not when Kakashi could still see the images his mind had conjured up of Tenzo’s broken and mangled corpse.
“We got him home,” Gai reminded him, placing a hand on his shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze. “He’s alive, Kakashi. There’s not going to be another funeral.”
Hearing the words said out loud didn’t get rid of the feelings deep down inside of him, but Kakashi pushed them back. He was in public, where anyone could walk in and see him at any moment. Now was not the time for him to break.
Turning his attention back to Tenzo, he sighed. Tenzo was home, safe and alive, so why didn’t he feel better? Why was there still this heavy weight on his conscience?
Lost in his thoughts once again, Kakashi didn’t notice when Gai’s hand left his shoulder, or when the door’s lock clicked into place. There was nothing around him that caught his attention until he saw Gai in the corner of his eye, kneeling down so that he was at eye level with him.
Kakashi didn’t need to be a genius to figure out what came next. As soon as Gai reached out and cupped his cheek he knew it was time. He was finally being given the permission he needed to drop the mask Gai had asked him to put on hours ago.
His demeanour shifted as ‘Stone cold Kakashi’ crumbled away. Every muscle in his body relaxed and within seconds he could feel the tears starting to run down his face. Thankfully Gai didn’t leave him to suffer alone for long.
Wrapping his arms around Kakashi’s shoulders, he pulled him into a tight hug, saying nothing as Kakashi began to crumble. Just sitting there and holding onto him through everything.
The pain in his chest was the first thing that Kakashi noticed. Not just the feeling of his heart breaking all over again either, but the way his chest was compressing in on itself as well. How his lungs struggled to draw in breath as everything came crashing down on him all at once. The slight tremble in his hands as they came up to rest against Gai’s chest.
Every dark thought he had been trying so desperately to ignore came flooding back, bombarding him with the feelings he couldn’t focus on when he had to save Tenzo.
One day.
Just one day without feeling so helpless in a world so determined to destroy him. Was that really so much to ask for? One day where he got to look at the people he loved and not wonder if this would be when he’d lose them. If their next mission away would be their last, and he’d find himself standing in front of another gravestone.
Was that really so much to ask?
“He’s alive.” The reminder was a soft breath against his ear. “We found him, Kakashi. He’ll be fine.”
Yet it still didn’t feel real.
A part of his mind was still screaming at him that something would go wrong. That they hadn’t done everything right, and hadn’t actually been able to save Tenzo. It screamed at him that any moment he could turn around, and Tenzo would be gone. Another friend that he failed to save.
“It’s ok…” Gai’s voice barely broke through the barrage of thoughts. “He’s alive and I’m here. You’re not alone. Breathe in, and breathe out. I need you to do that for me, Kakashi.”
Burying his face into Gai’s chest, Kakashi tried desperately to focus on that familiar scent as he followed Gai’s instructions. One deep breath in, and one long breath out. His throat burned as he did it, but he continued following Gai’s instructions.
Breathe in
Breathe out
It was a mantra that Gai repeated to him and he followed, but nothing changed this time. His chest still hurt, his hands still shook, and his mind was still full of those thoughts. Nothing he did seemed to help him through the panic that coursed through his veins, no matter how hard he tried.
“I’m here.” The mantra disappeared, and Gai held him just a little bit tighter. “I’m here, Kakashi, and I'm sorry.”
Crying.
That’s the first thing Tenzo heard when he started to regain consciousness. Someone crying nearby. A soft sob muffled by something else, but still audible enough that Tenzo could tell what it is.
He couldn’t remember what exactly happened. One minute he was fighting for his life, the next everything had gone black. There was a pain radiating from his side that he thought could be from a hit he took from one of the enemy weapons, but his brain was still a little fuzzy.
The only thing clear was the crying.
Cracking an eye open, he turned to see who it was making the noise. His eyes were still blurry, but right beside him he could make out two figures. Both of them were blurs of blue and green, one a much brighter, more vibrant colour of green.
Gai.
He didn’t need his eyes to focus to figure that out. Only Gai and Lee wore an outfit that bright, and Lee had no reason to be in a hospital room with him.
At least, that’s where he assumed he was if Gai was by his side. Even with his vision still blurred he could tell he wasn’t outside, and he wouldn’t be at his own apartment already. Not when it felt like he had been stabbed.
It had to be the hospital, and that was Gai at his side.
Which only left one option for who the other person was.
Blinking a few times, he watched as his vision slowly began to clear and Kakashi finally came into focus. But rather than sitting slumped in his chair with that awful book of his in hand, he was slouched forward in Gai’s arms.
The realization hit him like Gai’s fist to his face. Kakashi. Kakashi was the one crying. That sound was coming from his senpai.
His mind screamed at him to reach out and try to touch the older man. To bring attention to himself and help him realize that he was alive. That everything was ok. Maybe then he would stop crying.
But no matter how hard he tried, his body refused to cooperate. It wasn’t just his side that hurt, and trying to move made that painfully obvious. All of his muscles were stiff, and there was a dull ache in his back that made it uncomfortable to even be lying there, but there was nothing he could do. His body refused to move.
So he was stuck. Unable to do anything but listen to his senpai crying.
He’d have to make it up to the older man later, but for now he just lay there and watched, smiling softly when Gai’s eyes met him.
At least his senpai had Gai.

“We’re celebrating,” she said as she walked into his office, uninvited, unexpected, and unwarranted.
“I don’t have anything to celebrate,” he said shortly, sending her one of his patented Very Tired looks before returning to his mind-numbing paperwork.
“Well, I do,” she insisted, circling his desk and planting herself very inconveniently on top of his paperwork, the sound of paper and scrolls crunching beneath her weight. “Do you know how much work it takes to keep you alive and well? I’m celebrating another year I’ve kept you around,” she teased, swinging her legs out and kicking him in the shin far more viciously than he thought the situation called for.
“Maybe you should quit,” he muttered under his breath. She let out a deeply unhappy tut-tut.
“We’re going to unpack that some other time. Today, it’s your birthday, and I am determined to make sure you have fun,” she said with a triumphant grin. “Even if it makes you miserable.” He thought that sounded a little counterintuitive, but he knew from years of experience that there was no deterring Sakura once she was on a mission. She was the embodiment of do or die.
He had begrudgingly let her tear him away from his desk, which he could admit was a gift in and of itself, and now they were wandering aimlessly around the village. She had made it a point to teasingly parade him by the Hokage monument, where his big head was staring down at him, immortalized in stone.
“How incredible that it’s life-sized,” she teased. He nearly cracked a smile before he remembered that he was meant to be there with her against his will. He had a feeling she knew he’d nearly cracked, because then she’d taken her torture one step further and announced—loudly—that she was so pleased to be celebrating his birthday with him.
The villagers flocked unrepentantly. He was shocked her face didn’t split in half under the force of her shit-eating grin.
“I thought birthdays were supposed to be fun,” he complained once they’d made a daring escape from all the bowing well-wishers.
“I was under the impression that torture and melancholy was your idea of a good time,” she said, pouting in thought and looking up at him with mockingly wide, innocent eyes.
“Cute,” he said, not hiding how unimpressed he was with her. She giggled and held herself to his arm.
“Okay, fine. So what do you want to do?” she asked, smiling up at him with so much warmth he nearly burnt up from the inside out. He just shrugged. He had never really thought about it. “Well, what do you usually do?”
“Nothing,” he said plainly. She frowned.
“What about when you were a kid?” she asked, her lip jutting out in a genuine pout as her frown deepened. He shifted uncomfortably beside her as they ambled down a quiet road. Truthfully, there was really only one person in the village that ever acknowledged his birthday since the death of Minato-sensei. Gai was always available for a “celebratory competition”, and that was all he ever really needed.
“I don’t know, Sakura,” he said tiredly. “I was probably on missions most of the time,” he admitted with a shrug. He remembered Rin always bringing him dog-shaped onigiri on his birthdays. Minato-sensei had always been disgruntled when Kakashi’s one birthday request was a lesson in fuinjutsu, but he always complied. Obito…
Kakashi sighed and when he looked down at Sakura, who was uncharacteristically quiet, he was horrified to see her big green eyes filled to the brim with unshed tears. He flinched away from her at the sight, which thankfully dispelled the tears, but her tears had made way for annoyance, which she relieved by roughly punching his arm.
Physical violence was far less terrifying than being confronted with such an outward display of emotion, though, so he would accept this as a victory.
“I have an idea,” she said once she’d finished terrorizing him with her brute strength. He wasn’t sure what he found more daunting; her fists or her mind. He went along with her to spare himself the trouble for the time being.
Not long after, he found himself laid on a blanket at a park, staring up at the stars while Sakura snickered into the basket of goods she’d procured. He hadn’t argued when she’d pulled him around town, ducking into a couple of storefronts until she had gathered all her necessities. Now, they were sharing an itchy blanket in the middle of a park while she concocted some beverage in a couple of embarrassingly festive cups.
From where he lay, he couldn’t see much beyond her hunched back, shaking with her quiet snickers. Whenever he asked her what exactly she was doing, she told him to kindly shut up and let her surprise him. And so, he was staring at the stars. Not a bad end to the day, he supposed. Even if there was a madwoman at his feet, brewing up a surefire shit-storm.
When she finally decided to re-enter the realm of normal, human behaviour, she was brandishing two plastic cups, filled to the brim with some heinously green liquid that she said was guaranteed to get him “Kaka-shitfaced”. If that wasn’t bad enough, she’d also presented him with a massive sparkler sat atop the saddest baked good he’d ever laid eyes on.
“What is this?” he asked in distaste.
“A bran muffin; you need to watch out for your digestive tract at your age,” she teased. “Also, it was late and that was all the bakery had left in stock.” It was the thought that counted, he supposed. Still, he made her share half of it “for good luck”.
She was right about one thing, though. That drink was going straight to his head. He knew he was in trouble when the stars starting dancing above him. Sakura was lying beside him, her head resting against his shoulder and her arms tightly hugging one of his. She gasped, untangling one of her arms to point overhead to a star shooting clear across the sky.
“Make a birthday wish,” she said through her giggles. He peered down at her, pink-cheeked and gazing up at the sky, the silliest grin plastered across her face. He felt so lighthearted he thought he might just float away. His mind was shockingly blank as the star and its tail disappeared from the night sky. “Did you do it?” she whispered.
He hummed vaguely, and that seemed to be enough to appease her. He was grateful for that tight hold she had on his arm, because right now, he felt like that was all that was keeping him tethered to this world. He could have blamed the drinks, but honestly, it was a combination of things.
“You know, I had planned on making you play a drinking game with me, but I think we are both better off without it,” she said, giggling to herself. “But, just so you know, that is quintessential birthday behaviour.”
“For sixteen year olds, maybe,” he mocked.
“What do you know? You went straight from five to fifty,” she chided lightly. Then, her head was tilted back and she was gazing at him with the same intrigue with which she had been watching the stars.
“And is stargazing quintessential birthday behaviour?” he asked. She pouted in thought.
“Could be. It’s all very individual, you know,” she said with the confidence of a bonafide birthday expert.
“Except the drinking games. Those are non-negotiable,” he said.
“Exactly. You’re a quick learner,” she playfully praised him. “They really are essential.”
“How about one round, then? For the sake of tradition, of course.”
“Of course,” she repeated, a mischievous smile playing at her lips. “Truth or drink,” she proposed, and he agreed because he had absolutely no basis for refusal. He was entirely unsure of why he’d proposed this to begin with. She turned so she was curled up to his side instead of on her back, and it felt only natural for him to move his arm from her grasp to drape it around her. He didn’t dwell much on just how natural it felt to have her tucked under his arm that way.
“What was your best birthday?” he asked. She snorted, delicate as ever. He couldn’t help but smile at that.
“That’s a terrible question, Kakashi. You’re supposed to pick something that would be hard to answer so that I’d be tempted to drink,” she said, rolling her eyes as she laid her chin on his chest to peer up at him judgmentally and drunkenly. He thought that was a strange combination, but it worked for her. When he shrugged and made no effort to rectify his drinking game blunder, she sighed. “Fine, I’ll tell you, and then you have to recreate it with me. If you refuse, you have to down another birthday beverage,” she proposed with a wicked smile.
“I feel like you are taking advantage of my trusting nature,” he complained.
“You are the least trusting being in existence,” she said, waving him off. He didn’t argue; instead he agreed to her terms, curious to see where it would take them. So far, leaning into her ideas had landed him in a decent position. He couldn’t deny that this was the best night he’d had in a long time, birthday or not. “My favourite birthday memory is from when I was seven. Ino and I ate our weight in dango and birthday cake, and then we played on a swing set until we both threw up,” she said, giggling through the story as she recalled it.
“I’m not eating my weight in dango,” he warned. Her giggles intensified.
“I’ll concede on that,” she agreed.
“And I’ve never been on a swing set,” he admitted softly, sorry to see her giggles give way to a wide-eyed disbelief, tinged the faintest bit with sadness. So quick it made him dizzy, she was up on her feet and tugging on his arms until he was standing with her.
“That is unacceptable, Hokage-sama,” she said seriously, slipping her hand into his and towing him toward a children’s playground, her blanket and basket forgotten behind them. She presented the swing set to him with a flourish, pushing him until the swing was behind his legs, and then she was shoving him until he was uncomfortably sat on its band, his feet dragging sadly through the woodchips beneath him.
“I feel that I may have missed my window of opportunity,” he said as he stared down at his legs, seemingly too long for this endeavour to truly work out in his favour. She ignored him, sitting herself on the swing beside him and wasting no time in launching herself into a languid swing. Cautiously, he did the same. She laughed at him every time he miscalculated and kicked up a burst of woodchips mid-swing.
“You’re a natural,” she teased, leaning back and enjoying the breeze as she flew back to front, her hair billowing behind her, shining in the moonlight. “Isn’t this nice?” she called out as they swung in opposing directions. He had to admit, silly as it felt, it was nice. It felt good to finally have this small, seemingly inconsequential experience; even if it was coming a few decades late.
He wasn’t sure how long they did that, just swinging back and forth, higher and higher, mostly in silence, but for Sakura’s delighted giggles every now and then. A few times, he even laughed with her. Eventually, though, their swinging slowed until they were simply hanging side-by-side.
“I don’t see how that made you puke,” he said after awhile. He should have known nothing good would come of this when her mischievous snicker hit his ears. She hopped off her swing and grabbed each of the chains that hung on either side of him.
“Do you trust me?”
“In general, or right this moment?”
She didn’t bother elaborating, nor waiting for his final answer. Instead, she gripped those chains and twisted, link over link, until the chains were tangled and taut and he was deeply nervous of where this would lead him.
“Ready?” she asked, her voice lilting with palpable amusement.
“No,” he answered, but just as he did, she gripped his shoulders and pushed—he suspected with a hint of chakra strength—and sent him spinning furiously. The world around him was a total blur. He felt the chains untangle and re-tangle in the opposite direction, the force of his spinning too strong to stop. He felt her arms on his shoulders again, and he stared up at her to meet her green eyes, even though she had six of them.
He couldn’t get a word out before he was spinning again. Her uncontrollable laugher taunted him as he turned without end. Finally, just when he thought his head might fly off like a spinning top, he stopped.
“You feeling okay?” she asked softly, her laughter subdued but not departed.
“Never better,” he responded, as strongly as he could. He was pleased that his voice managed to sound deceptively even, but the effect of that was entirely ruined by his sliding off the seat and flat on his back into the woodchips, his legs dangling on the swing above him. “Ow.”
“Oh, gods,” she giggled out, falling to her hands and knees above him, peering down at him in concern, but her shoulders still quaking with silent laughter. His head was still spinning, and he was seeing stars, but this time, they appeared to be dancing in Sakura’s eyes instead of the night sky. He thought they seemed to belong there.
“I think it’s your turn,” he rasped out.
“I think our game of truth or drink has ended,” she said with a light laugh, pressing cool fingertips to his forehead. He shook his head and demanded she take her turn. “Well, we’ve already thrown the rules out the door,” she considered with a soft smile, her soft hands still sitting at the side of his face. “Would you show me your face?” she asked, her cheeks going pink.
He would blame the alcohol and the light-headedness, but he didn’t even hesitate before curling a finger into his mask and pulling it down. She stared down at him in surprise, her cheeks transitioning from pink to red.
“Does that mean you have to drink?” he asked stupidly.
“You have woodchips in your hair,” she responded, equally stupidly.
And then his hand was at the back of her head and he was leaning up to meet her halfway in a kiss that made him dizzier than all the swing-spinning in the world. She tasted like that vile green drink and bran muffin. With a contented sigh, he fell back down to the woodchips, leaving his hand lingering in her hair. She smiled down at him.
“Birthday kisses are also essential,” she offered. He hummed, agreeing wholeheartedly.
And then he was curled on his side, throwing up into the woodchips, Sakura’s laughter ringing loudly in his ears.

For the team minato stuff... maybe giving the kids The Talk? These kids were only in the academy for 1-3 years.
Like, minato is supposed to meet up with his team, but the accidentally see him and kushina in a... compromised position.
Awkwardness ensues, especially since its incredibly like that jiraiya gave him the talk.
This can’t be happening.
He refused to believe this was a conversation they were being forced to sit through, all because of Obito.
“I told you to wait at the training field with us,” he hissed, rolling his eyes when Obito glared at him. “If you hadn’t interrupted them we wouldn’t be in this situation.”
“It’s not my fault,” Obito defended himself. “They should have a sign up when they’re doing stuff like that.”
“Obito, Kakashi!” The two of them snapped to attention, neither of them meeting Minato-Sensei’s eyes. “Pay attention. This is a serious conversation.”
There was nothing serious about it. Not to Kakashi. He would rather be anywhere else. Even a challenge with Gai sounded better than sitting through this.
“Sensei, don’t you think we’re a little… young?” Rin interjected, for once on the same page as Kakashi and Obito with her feelings about the topic at hand. “I mean, it’s nice to have but… if I want to know I can ask my parents.”
“I can just go without knowing,” Kakashi grumbled. When was he ever going to use this information anyways? His only concern was being a good shinobi. Making a name for himself. None of this would help him achieve that goal. “Shouldn’t Obito be the one being punished right now anyways?”
“Hey!”
“You all need to hear this,” Minato-Sensei insisted, refusing to budge on the matter. “Now, where were we?”
Not one of them dared to speak. Silently they all hoped he would forget what he was talking about and move on.
Maybe, if they were really lucky, he’d get distracted.
“Oh, right,” their hopes were dashed in an instant. “P-penetration.”
Not one of the four shinobi there heard that word being spoken out loud and made it out alive. Obito’s soul crumbled at the mere mention of the topic. Kakashi’s brain checked out half way through when his Sensei got a little too descriptive, Minato-Sensei looked like he wanted to die on the spot the entire time he spoke, and Rin-
Poor Rin.
She looked like she had just been through Torture and interrogation. There were no words to describe how terribly she was handling this conversation.
“I’m kicking your ass after this,” Kakashi grumbled, still glaring at Obito. “And you’re never going to Sensei’s alone again.”
“Right,” Crossing his arms over his chest, Obito puffed out his cheeks in defiance. “Like you can tell me what to do, Bakashi “
“Uh, Obito?” Rin spoke up, a soft but broken smile on her face when the boys turned to her. “He is the Chunin of the group.”
“Alright,” Minato Sensei clapped his hands, pulling their attention back to him. “Time for a quiz.”
Kakashi could feel himself melting into the ground.
“A- a quiz?” Obito stammered. “Sensei!”
“It’s important to know you three retained the information I gave you,” he stood firm even as his face turned a deep red. “Anyways um… Let’s see. Kakashi, what is the most important thing to have during intercourse?”
“Murder.”
“I don’t think-“
“I’m going to murder you.” he stared at Obito, already reaching for his Kunai.
Throwing his hands up in front of himself, Obito screeched as Kakashi lunged forward, only saved by their Sensei bolting between the two of them and grabbing Kakashi around the waist.
The nine year old was now dangling in the air kicking his feet out desperately, trying with all his might to get out of his Sensei’s hold so he could get at Obito.
It was a hopeless cause, but he didn’t care.
It was Obito’s fault they were here and he was going to make sure he paid for his mistakes.

Continued @mheer-mizuki
Kana woke up slowly. Her eyelids felt like weighted lead, but she managed to open them with a great power of will.
She felt a warm hand stroke her cheek, and Neji’s strong arms still holding her close. Once her vision allowed her to distinguish shapes, she discerned her father in front of her.
“Papa” she cried out, as tears started flowing freely down her cheeks.
“Shhh, it’s okay. We’re here now” He reassured her, but Gai wasn’t sure if he was saying it for her sake or his own “you’re alive, butterfly. Take your time.”
Neji pressed his nose to Kana’s head, inhaling her sweet scent, thankful to hear her regain consciousness. However, fear still had ahold of him. The image of blood dripping down Mizuki’s face would be permanently etched in his mind.
As grateful as he was, he couldn’t help but worry about her. He didn’t understand much of the situation yet, but she’d willingly sacrificed herself for Kana, and that was a debt he’d forever hold.
Kakashi had picked up Mizuki and taken to another room. Kiba followed them as if it were the last thing he’d do on earth. Anything Kakashi said, he was willing to do if it meant lessening his wife’s suffering.
Kana’s crying stopped, as she realized her body was no longer in pain. Sure she felt heavy and tired, but the pain was surprisingly gone. Memories started flowing back to her.
She’d had a hunch months ago. She felt someone observing her at times, only to look at the observer and find emptiness.
Last night she saw him. She was sure it was that man.
Kana, Daughter of the Green Beast, come with me. We’ve chosen you.
He told her as he stepped from the shadows followed by a big white wolf.
She had tried to run, but he knew all her tricks. It was too late for her.
“I’m not sure I’m— if we’re safe”

Hisoka!AU of DOS, Rokudaime(whoever you pick to end up with that job in this verse), A Steady Hand (NOTE: For Hisoka!AU, see Recursive forum pg 489 #14,655 - Snapshots From The Past Of Hisoka by donahermurphy pg 489 #14,665 - A Meeting While Fleeing The Garden & Desert by Tirfarthuan pg 491 #14,716 - A Name & A Gift Passed On by Tirfarthuan)
A/N: Thanks for the biblio [1+2, 3], dona--I did not know who Hisoka was before this, so those helped a lot! I did, also, have to reread the Lone Wolf 'verse since from what I understand Hisoka is an AU of that 'verse specifically? If not, please let me know.
Anyway, on rereading Lone Wolf 'verse, here are the facts that I gleaned:
Danzo is Hokage
Hiruzen died of "natural causes" several years before canon
Kakashi "betrayed the village" somehow and is being called Comrade-Killer more prevalently than canon
Asuma is probably dead
Yuuhi Shinku isn't an entire dick (since Uchiha Uzume can think about him without an automatic insult attached)
Shin is still alive (but very slowly dying)
and Kurenai is helping the Uchiha at the very least cover up a meeting with Kakashi outside of the village.
The facts of the Hisoka!AU are:
Shikako was taken to be ROOT
in order to protect those she cared about she mentally/spiritually maimed herself to the point where she no longer counted as "a Shikako" to Gelel
her partner for the final exam was Sai
she escaped/convinced Sai that the point of the final exam was to fake her death and became a fishmonger on the coast of Wind
when Shikako!Prime leaves via Gelel she "wakes up" from said previous mental/spiritual maiming
Kakashi finds her and they're a lovely wolf and cub pair who aim to kill Danzo (and get rid of their loneliness and maybe heal)
... okay, now that I typed all that out, did you mean Hisoka!AU of canon DoS instead of the Hisoka!AU of the Lone Wolf 'verse? Because those are different things, I think. But I kinda figured Hisoka!AU was intrinsically tied to the Lone Wolf 'verse, so, uh, here's a couple of ideas I had in mind:
1) Akimichi Chouza as Rokudaime.
Because after the absolute worst sort of "warmongering, self-cannibalizing, Konoha first" bullshit that Danzo spewed, the village needs someone who recognizes that being the village leader means making and protecting a home worth living in, not just a harsh taskmaster sending his soldiers out to die.
I considered Shikaku!Rokudaime for a similar sort of reason, but it's not as thematic and, also on a personal level, he can't. In a Hisoka!AU, he has to reconcile the fact that he gave one of his children--willingly or not, even if Danzo wiped his memory later--to a man who he already knew would exploit her horrendously. Maybe he didn't know the full extent of ROOT's training (surely not the final exam) but the fact that he was apprehensive and still went through with it is not a good look.
Even if Hisoka and Kakashi do not return to the village proper (and part of me is like, hey! They shouldn't! And I will go into that more in a little bit) he has to make amends to at least her, if not both of them, and he can't be Hokage and bound to prioritize the village over her if he ever wants to succeed.
Chouza, on the other hand, is the only one of the three who never made that decision (I'm still a little side-eyeing the Yamanaka clan, because surely a clan whose whole deal is KNOWING WHEN MENTAL SHENANIGANS IS GOING ON should have seen that with Fu, especially since he was allowed to keep his name and also, probably, had to have clan training to learn the clan jutsu, but maybe it wasn't Inoichi who made that deal? Maybe it was his predecessor. Either way, still mega sketch. I'm a little hand-wavy with Shibi and the Aburame because I headcanon that the Kyuubi largely wiped out what power they had the most out of any of the clans and they were like. Desperate to survive. And didn't have allied clans to bolster them.) And yes, probably that's because as far as fighting styles are concerned, they rely on their clan jutsu which is very recognizable and thus not great for ANBU (in the same way that I imagine the Inuzuka aren't often recruited into ANBU) but it's still a notable fact. The Akimichi are trustworthy pillars of the village and have been since the beginning.
And it helps that of the Nidaime's team, Akimichi Torifu was one of two of the full six who didn't turn into an old corruptible asshole. Sure, we don't necessarily know what happened to him, but he wasn't specifically seen as an old corruptible asshole so I think he's winning. It reflects well on his clan as a whole. Also, given my headcanon of the Akimichi actively cultivating their ties with civilians and also possibly the Daimyo's family they have, alongside military might, financial and political clout.
Anyway, while a possible Tsunade as Rokudaime would have similar vibes (and does, you know, match canon and have those canon reasons for working) in terms of "healing the village" etc. etc. This is a Tsunade whose most bitter cynicism was proven right? And there's no inspirational Naruto to convince her otherwise. And also, Tsunade shouldn't HAVE to clean up Danzo's mess. Like, the minuscule obligation she had to clean up Hiruzen's mess does not apply to Danzo. (It's a little like... Tsunade, Jiraiya, and Orochimaru were raised to be the ultimate team to take over for Hiruzen except they didn't know it and were dysfunctional. The fact that Hiruzen's death was by Orochimaru's hand and between her and Jiraiya she is the better choice is the only reason why she has that slight obligation to go back to Konoha. Whereas, with Danzo? FUCK THAT NOISE. That's a mess the village needs to resolve on their own. THEY'RE the ones who let it get so bad. THEY'RE the ones who need to deal with it)
And also, another reason why I don't really want Tsunade as Rokudaime is because I kind of like the idea of Kakashi and Hisoka sort of orbiting/paralleling her and Shizune. Like, there's a not-so-secret society of Konoha expatriates who aren't actually missing-nin and both love and hate the village and Tsunade is exasperatedly fond of those two disasters whereas she is sickened by the village. Maybe one day it will have fixed itself enough that she'll go back and visit and whip their Medic Corps into shape, but that is not any time soon!
Also, also, also, and I don't know if you remember this, dona, but in your In Which Someone Attempts to Kidnap Shikamaru, Instead, Inoichi brings up something called the Regency Protocol with Ino in regards to Danzo kidnapping Shikako and brainwashing Shikaku to forget and originally I thought it was some kind of Ino-Shika-Cho contingency plan where the three clans take over the village BECAUSE DANZO IS KIDNAPPING AND MURDERING CHILDREN AND THE SANDAIME WAS LETTING IT HAPPEN ON HIS WATCH? And of the three clans, the Akimichi really do have the traditional fighting prowess to wear the hat, so that's part of this too.
I just think an Akimichi Hokage would be pretty chill about it. Like. They wear power well and are good at managing people without crushing them in the fist of tyranny.
---
2) Maito Gai as Rokudaime.
This one actually for similar reasons as Chouza. Although, in terms of lineage, Gai could be Shichidaime, not that we're particularly holding to that Hokage teacher-student lineage so much.
In terms of semi-parallels where canon goes Tsunade to Kakashi, that means Gai also is a candidate. And in regards to showing the village/world a new kind of Hokage, he's as far from Danzo as one could get. He's straightforward and kind and draws out the potential from everyone and honestly real great but also wouldn't send someone into a mission he himself wouldn't do. Obviously, being a Hokage would mean delegating and sending shinobi on missions, but he would never send them out to die just because. Yes there are risky missions, but he would send those best suited to succeed with every tool available to them so they can succeed. Whereas Danzo would just throw bodies at a problem and kill the survivors for not doing it good enough.
The main difference between a Rokudaime Gai vs Rokudaime Chouza is that Gai's Konoha would rely less on the clan system. Of his three students, two were not from clans and the third is from the Hyuuga Branch (AND YOU KNOW FOR SURE THAT'S GOING TO BE SOMETHING FINALLY ADDRESSED BY A HOKAGE BECAUSE WHAT THE FUCK). Yes, his sensei was Akimichi Chouza, but neither of his teammates were clan either. A Konoha under the rule of Rokudaime Gai is a Konoha that builds up those who don't have the same infrastructure as clans, who strengthens civilian-born and clan-born alike, who make sure that talented civilian-born students aren't only noticed by predatory old men who can sweep there existences under the rug.
Because truly one of the many ways that Danzo's weird self-hating megalomania harmed the village was by draining away the talented civilian-borns of Konoha. He who hated that the Shimura were a near-civilian clan, committed the worst crimes against those who could have proved that bloodline wasn't everything. He was so obsessed with the power of the Sharingan that it became a self fulfilling prophecy. Any talented non-bloodline student who could have proven a challenge were stolen and smothered before they could prove themselves.
Because imagine this: one day some random student with the ubiquitous last name of Satou or Tanaka or Honda beats Uchiha Itachi in a spar. Maybe its an accident. Maybe they got lucky. Maybe Itachi wasn't taking them seriously (after all, what could some no name civilian born do to him?). But those maybes don't matter. Satou or Tanaka or Honda gets in one good hit. Surprises the prodigy of the Uchiha clan. Knocks him out.
The teacher takes a note of it. Talks about it in the teacher's lounge. One of Danzo's spies brings news of that notable spar.
By the next week--maybe even the next day--Satou or Tanaka or Honda is gone. No one beats Uchiha Itachi in a spar anymore. And ROOT adds another nameless, faceless soldier to its ranks.
BUT NONE OF THAT HAPPENS UNDER HOKAGE MAITO GAI. Because it is civilians that make Konoha a village and not just a loose coalition of clans. Because a name and a bloodline are not necessary to make a person great.
3) And here's the angsty/semi-bleak option: Yuuhi Kurenai as Rokudaime.
And I wrote a little bit for it, but I'm a little... mreh... about it because it does revolve a lot around the various men in her life which I'm not exactly proud of, tbh, but aaaaaaaaaagh this is endemic to a lot of Naruto fic. D:<
Yuuhi Kurenai is nobody's first choice.
(She was Asuma's first choice, and he was hers, and that had nothing to do with either of their fathers. Except now Asuma is--)
Her father wanted a son. A proper heir. Someone to elevate the prestige of the Yuuhi clan.
(In another universe, Yuuhi Shinku will think the only way his daughter can benefit the clan is through marriage, not her own merits. In this universe Yuuhi Shinku is a little bit more open minded enough to make do. He's still a dick, but not as much of one as he could've been. This puts Kurenai in an interesting position.)
The Uchiha clan are pursuing another ally with a little more fire power, a little more name recognition, and all the intimidation and influence that entails.
(But look at where that got Kakashi, exiled and with his reputation in tatters. Look at Gai who so eagerly and overtly wants to follow. Look at Asuma who--)
The rest of the village would prefer someone who didn't look so much like the clan of would be traitors. Someone who didn't have black hair and piercing red eyes. Someone who didn't specialize in genjutsu, an art for liars.
(Oh, but they were fine quietly suffering under a man who lied and stole and murdered. A man who manipulated and cheated and framed others for his crimes. A man who ruined everything he touched and Asuma tried to stop him, gods, but then he--)
And the world doesn't quite know what to do with a Hokage like her. Or a Kage that is a her, for that matter.
Yuuhi Kurenai is nobody's first choice.
But that's fine. She can make do.
She can make miracles out of nothing.
So the thought process to get to a Rokudaime Kurenai went kind of like such. Obviously, the Uchiha would prefer an Uchiha Hokage. However that largely depends on whether they succeed in their coup or not. There's the distinct possibility that Kakashi plus Shikako!Prime or Kakashi plus Hisoka will just kill Danzo and then leave, forcing the rest of the village deal with the consequences... AS THEY SHOULD... and thus also sort of cutting the coup off at the knees.
If the coup doesn't succeed (whether out of failure or because Kakashi and a Shikako kills Danzo first before they're prepared to do the rest of the coup) then if the political climate actually matches the one they perceive themselves being in (although, I don't think the Uchiha are as hated as they think they are, but its hard for them to see that isolated as they've been forced to be) then they're unlikely to get an Uchiha Hokage especially if news of them actually seeking an alliance with Comrade-Killer Hatake Kakashi comes out. Much less the aborted/failed coup.
Anyway, no Uchiha Hokage without a successful coup... although, if there were a successful coup, the three Uchiha I would think would be even feasible would be Fugaku--boring, bland, but that's what they know. Shisui--friendly, well liked by those outside the clan, has an international reputation. Mikoto--this is largely based on fanon/headcanon, but she was ANBU Captain? That's pretty neat.
But, uh, to get back to the no Uchiha Hokage... Kakashi's reputation is still in tatters. Maito Gai could be a good option, but while his lack of clan is a good thing for future Konoha, he doesn't quite have the political backing necessary to get there. (Namikaze Minato was an undisputed war hero. Maito Gai hasn't quite proven himself that level yet)
If its brought up that the Ino-Shika-Cho were compromised (ie, Shikaku would have worked closely with Hokage Danzo as the Jounin Commander and also one of Danzo's top ROOT agents is Yamanaka Fu) then even Chouza's candidacy would be suspect.
The village wants Tsunade. But Tsunade does not want it. I have no fucking idea what Jiraiya has been up to, but if he didn't want the hat after Hiruzen died he sure as fuck won't want it after whatever Danzo's done with it.
The Hokage's Council is suspect. Yuuhi Shinku, for all that he is similarly important to the infrastructure of Konoha while also not being part of Danzo's corruption (in another universe, he very well would have been, desperate for power), isn't actually that strong and is old, besides. (The village has had enough of old men entrenched in positions of power telling them what to do).
But he does have a daughter. Genjutsu specialist, yes, but with potential and room to grow. And Sarutobi Asuma loved her (and, fuck, what a shitty campaign to run on, the would-have-been-widow of the Sandaime's son, but you know Shinku would be ruthless in pushing that. Remember, not as much of a dick in other 'verses, but still a dick) so she has that tether to the old regime, tentative as it is.
No one really has any major objections, but no one is really all that gung-ho about it either (except for maybe Anko who will punch all detractors in the face and may very well be a one woman Hokage's Guard).
Kurenai least of all. Because she doesn't want to be Hokage, but she'd rather step up and do it than watch her village tear itself apart even further. And maybe she doesn't know who she is just yet, and maybe it sucks that she's going to have to discover that while also being Hokage, but gods she's going to try her best because at least she knows what Danzo was doing was wrong and that there's no way she can do worse than him unless she just actively slaughtered children in the street.
...
Hm, yeah, kinda bleak ending. But as I said. The Rokudaime Kurenai one is the angsty-bleak option. I mean, it gets more hopeful, but it is a struggle I think for both her and the village.
I know its not a proper ficlet fill, dona, but hope you enjoyed this brain storm / meta anyway. :D

Himawari Chapter 8
Tumblr media
Beneath a masked smirk, the letter found a comfortable home in his breast pocket.
Note to self. Iruka is truly a man of extremes. A Hashira offers him a souvenir, and he asks for Orochimaru’s head or nothing at all.
Chapter 8 of a Demon Slayer AU
In the blink of an eye, summer had passed.
Iruka looked out into the vast forest as the winds of autumn blew past. The colours were already well in the midst of changing; green giving way to golds and reds. The lush soundscape of summer was no more, instead, the winds carried crisp, dry notes that only served to accent the chill that settled in his bones.
He sat now in what was a certain Hashira’s preferred napping spot, high above the school grounds. It had been a few months since the man had left, but now, in the teacher’s lap, a tired hound was napping, warm and content.
Iruka gazed at the slip of paper in his hand. He had to keep a good grip on it, lest a sudden gust of wind carried it off. Admittedly, he’d gone over its contents five times by now, but surely, he thought, one more time couldn’t hurt.
Iruka-sensei,
At the time of writing this, I’m still alive, isn’t that nice?
If you are too, then I’m glad it wasn’t a wasted trip for Bisuke.
You’ve spoiled him, and he’s pickier about his treats now, but I guess that’s fine.
Not much excitement where I am I’m afraid, and not much good tea either.
If you’d like a souvenir, you need only ask, though Guruko can’t carry very much. Please be reasonable, sensei.
It was signed off with a gracefully brushed henohenomoheji.
Iruka’s other hand rested in Bisuke’s fur. He stroked it absentmindedly, sighing.
“Bisuke, what do you think I should ask for?”
The hound in question merely whined, and nestled his head deeper under the sleeve of his haori. With a chuckle, Iruka carefully folded the paper back up, his fingers running over each fold and crease, before tucking it into his breast pocket. He let his palm linger on his chest.
It’d gotten just a bit warmer.
--------------------------------------
“Sakura? What’s the matter?”
The next morning, Iruka had seen Bisuke off, well fed and rested. He was in the middle of making his afternoon rounds when his ears picked up the sounds of soft crying. The school had been set up in an abandoned shrine compound, and he’d found her behind the aged offering box, below the large twisted ropes and bells.
“I-Iruka-sensei.” She lifted her head, her cheeks red and tear stained.
He crouched before her and placed a hand on her head.
“I’m here. What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell?”
Fresh tears welled up in her eyes. “I miss my parents.” She cried.
Iruka looked at his surroundings.
That’s right...her parents were shrine keepers.
Iruka hadn’t met them, but he knew they’d sheltered many slayers over the years, more than a few who were only alive today thanks to their intervention. The Harunos had been talented herbalists, and he’d come across their books on numerous occasions in Sarutobi’s library.
“I’m scared, sensei. I know we’re supposed to fight, but when I think about demons, all I can think about is running away.” She admitted, clutching her knees closer.
Iruka’s chest tightened. The child had only been here for half a year.
“Sakura, it’s only natural to feel that way. We’re human.” With the edge of his sleeve, he started to dry her cheeks. “Until you’re able to take care of yourself, we’re all here to protect you.” He’d say it as many times as he needed to.
“But the selections-“
“If you don’t want to take them, you don’t have to.” That was really the only saving grace in all this, he thought somberly. “If you want to follow in your parents’ footsteps, there are other ways to do it, Sakura. You don’t have to fight.”
“R-Really?” The relief in her eyes was apparent.
Iruka smiled gently, nodding. Getting up slowly, he offered her his hand.
“We’re teaching you to fight so you can protect yourself. Even if you don’t join the corp, there will always be a place for you.” He explained. Taking her small hand in his, he helped her to her feet.
Truth be told, it was something he always wished he could say to Naruto, but even he wasn’t sure those words would hold up under the weight of his destiny. Sakura at least, he didn’t have to worry for. If the Senju wouldn’t take her in, Sarutobi would. He’d see to it himself if it came down to it.
Hand in hand, they started to walk back into the compound. The rest of the children were playing catch, and their laughter echoed through the pavilion. By now, picking out Naruto’s voice amidst the chaos was second nature to Iruka.
Feeling a little more at ease, Sakura tugged gently on his hand, prompting him to face her.
“But sensei, fighting with swords, it’s a little fun.” She smiled sheepishly.
Iruka laughed and winked at the girl.
“Isn’t it? Sakura, don’t lose out to the boys. If they get out of hand when I’m not around, you’ll have to knock some sense into them for me.”
The smile widened into a returning grin.
“Ok!”
--------------------------------------
Months he’d spent ranging and searching, only to reach another dead end.
I should be used to this by now. How many years has it been?
Kakashi stepped back to lean against a tree, his hands resting on the hilt of the blade propped before him. The moon, previously obscured by a sea of clouds before the battle, finally revealed itself, casting a soft light on the surrounding area.
It was a scene of pure carnage.
A small rural village had been wiped out by a single demon. The bodies left uneaten were strewn about, marred beyond recognition. The women and children had been taken first.
They were always taken first.
If he’d arrived just two days earlier, he could have saved these people.
Stop it, Kakashi. If you carry on like this, you’ll-
Shut up, Gai.
The Hashira sheathed his blade. He’d found a spot upwind, away from the stench of blood and decay. Taking a seat at the base of the tree, he brought his fingers to his lips, and soon a sharp whistle cut through the dead silence of the night. It wasn’t long before a crow descended, landing on his arm. With its usual beady stare, it waited for instructions.
“Call for the kakushi.”
The support members from the nearest outpost would need to deal with the aftermath. He couldn’t afford to be held up by the local authority. After all, the demon slayers didn’t have any kind of recognition from the governing powers.
The crow crooned softly before taking off into the sky. With a tired, hooded gaze, Kakashi watched as its dark silhouette melted into the night.
You aren’t too fond of them, are you?
An amused voice echoed in his head.
Exhausted, Kakashi didn’t resist the inviting pull of the recollection.
The teacher had watched him send off another report one late afternoon. He sat under the shade of the large tree that stood between their rooms. Unlike the cold glow of the moon, the light that fell was a warm gold, dappled. Bisuke had taken a liking to being curled up in Iruka’s lap, a habit he’d apparently picked up from Guruko, and the youth had been engrossed in a book that was decidedly not Icha-Icha.
It was true, he admitted. Kakashi wasn’t overly attached to his assigned crow messenger. That was why he had his hounds. Traveling on a plane of existence humans had no access to, they were only marginally slower than the birds. Impending tragedies, proclamations of death and loss. Any time a crow cried, it could be sending a slayer to his last battle.
No, unlike some of his comrades, he couldn’t find a reason to be fond of his messenger, exactly.
He walked up beside the teacher and leaned against the trunk of the tree.
“When was the last time a crow brought you good news then?” He’d challenged.
Iruka put down his book and closed his eyes with a considering look. His lips slowly turned into a smile, the kind that broadcasted thoughts of unabashed wickedness. Propping his chin with his hand, he looked up to Kakashi with a gleam in his eyes.
“Hmm. Obviously, when it told me you’d be coming here!”
Kakashi’s visible eye twitched incredulously.
Iruka tried to keep a straight face, but quickly ended up turning his head away, bringing a hand to his mouth in a sorry attempt to stifle his laughter.
“Oi, don’t laugh so hard at your own joke.” he’d sighed, exasperated.
It only served to have the opposite effect. Bisuke, awoken by the shaking, looked up, blinking at Kakashi blearily.
After a few more awkward moments, the laughter finally settled.
“But you know, in hindsight, it’s not a joke. I really do mean it Iruka sighed with a soft expression.
Kakashi didn’t know what to say to that. He supposed he felt pleased by the admission, weirdly enough. He’d been sent to do a job, and while he’d dreaded it at first, being away from where he was most useful, he couldn’t say it was a complete waste of time. Iruka had proven to be a patient teacher in the art of fuda seals. It was also undeniably interesting to watch him at work; the paper coming to life with scriptures composed of inky, stylised crows.
Regrettably, the techniques used for the bounded field required a deep knowledge and understanding of the terrain, far beyond what he had time for. While he couldn’t hope to achieve the same level of expertise by a long shot, he’d been taught a few tricks, and he always appreciated the opportunity to pick Iruka’s brain.
“You don’t have a crow of your own?”
Iruka shook his head. “You know I don’t get sent out on missions. Even the sword I use now belonged to my father.”
Another curiosity.
“Well, I can only say you’re not missing much. They’re supposed to be for official use only.” He’d said ‘supposedly’, remembering at the back of his mind, the numerous occasions Gai sent his just to annoy him.
Loud and brash, just like its owner. It even had a bowl cut to match.
Iruka leaned his head back against the tree. A group of starlings had soared by after emerging from the surrounding forest, their cries echoing in the evening sky.
He looked up at them wistfully, an expression that reminded him painfully of Tenzou. He’d often done the same.
“You may be right about that. I’d probably just grow to become envious of it.” He chuckled.
Kakashi watched the last of the birds disappear.
“Envious of their freedom?”
“Hmm...You think they’re free just because they can fly, Kakashi-san?”
Ever the casual philosopher, he’d come to know Iruka’s fondness for throwing him questions like these.
Kakashi thought of his own situation. Unlike the other Hashira who watched over their own territories, after Tenzou’s death, he’d been granted leave to move as he pleased, to retire from his post, if he so wished to. He could go anywhere he wanted.
But no, he didn’t think of it as freedom in any sense of the word.
“I suppose even a bird needs a place to rest its wings.” He said after some consideration.
After a long pause, Iruka bowed his head, eyeing the sleeping hound in his lap. Then he whispered, with a voice that spoke of wishes, of places far beyond his reach.
“Maybe true freedom…means having a place to return to.”
“Maybe.”
--------------------------------------
The approaching human presence pulled him from his rest. The moon still hung in the sky. It hadn’t been long.
Dressed in the uniform blacks, face obscured by a headdress, a corp member stood at attention before him. He looked just a bit nervous.
“Kakushi, reporting for duty, Hashira-sama! Do you require any medical attention?”
Kakashi shook his head, and took to his feet.
“Carry on with your duties. They need to be given proper burials. I’m heading off. I don’t sense any other demons, but stay alert.”
“Understood! May you see victory on the battlefield, Hatake-dono.” He bowed. He passed a satchel of fresh supplies to Kakashi before joining the rest of his comrades.
A thoroughly unpleasant job, but someone has to do it.
An hour later he found himself enjoying the hospitality of an elderly pair of bamboo cutters who had spotted and hailed him from the road. Sitting around a small fire, they offered him a bowl of hearty stew and to his surprise, a small cup of sake. He’d refused at first, but the couple had insisted.
“A small token for those who risk their lives protecting us.” The lady said, pressing the cup into his hands. The man with her explained that they too, had once been saved by a slayer on the road.
The Hashira didn’t have the heart to tell them they’d very nearly avoided a death trap not too far away. He would stay with them tonight, at least.
After the couple had retired for the evening, Kakashi stationed himself in the trees above. He would have fallen asleep too, had he not sensed Bisuke’s presence nearby. It had been nearly a week since he’d been sent off to the Forest of Death.
The hound materialised before him, and after receiving a grateful scratch, turned around to allow Kakashi to retrieve his quarry.
The first, a letter in a familiar, careful script.
Kakashi-san,
It is good to hear that you are alive. I do hope it remains so.
My thanks for sending Bisuke, the children enjoy his company, but not nearly as much as I do. Working for you, he deserves every bit of spoiling he gets.
As for a souvenir, I would have requested for Orochimaru’s head, but you did ask me to be reasonable. Instead, should you find yourself visiting headquarters again, I would ask that you find time for a detour. A selfish request, I know, but it would be appreciated. Naruto was just a bit disappointed that he didn’t see you leave with his own two eyes.
Having heard of your unfortunate circumstances, I’ve sent a small consolation. Should it run out, you’re more than welcome to send one of the hounds. I hope it brings you some comfort in your time of need.
Lastly, while you’re out there, why not take the opportunity to pick up some better quality reading material? Jiraiya-sama sends his regards, but also asks me to tell you he’s disappointed that you didn’t listen to him. Whatever that means.
Stay safe, and may fortune go with you.
Iruka
It was only too easy to hear his voice narrating it.
He chuckled as he read it one more time.
Note to self. Iruka is truly a man of extremes. A Hashira offers him a souvenir, and he asks for Orochimaru’s head or nothing at all.
Beneath a masked smirk, the letter found a comfortable home in his breast pocket.
Accompanying it was a small pouch holding a small container. He didn’t have to look to figure out its contents, but he did so anyway. The earthy fragrance of tea; a precious portion of Iruka’s personal stash.
It brought to mind quiet afternoons in amicable company, the warmth of a hearth, and shared, amused laughter.
“Bisuke, don’t go gloating about this to the rest. They’re going to get jealous.”
The hound grinned before disappearing in a puff of smoke.
Alone, Kakashi looked up at the moon.
It seemed to glow a little warmer now.
One more thing to add to my list of duties, he sighed.
He’d have to find something good enough to send back for the tea.

End of Chapter 8

Author’s notes:
Woo, can’t believe we’re already at Chapter 8! What started out as a joke drawing has exploded into a completely, unexpectedly long fic with over 14 illustrations planned so far. I’ve never written anything longer than 2k words the past 15 years or so, so this has been a real brain stretcher. Thank you all for your kudos and comments so far, I always enjoy reading them! (They certainly encourage me to keep this on a regular schedule!)
Sometimes I also forget that not everyone is familiar with Demon Slayer, but I hope it’s been easy enough to follow along! Even if you aren’t, I don’t think you’re missing too much since I’ve made changes to certain parts of it. : )
Terminology and Fun facts:
Kakushi - ‘Hidden’ brigade (sounds very similar to Kakashi huh). They do all the clean up work following a battle. Typically staffed by non-combatants.
Fuda (Seals) - Protective charms that were, in real life, distributed by Shinto and Buddhist priests. The inspiration for Iruka’s is directly taken from the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shinto shrine in Japan. Googling “crow ofuda” will give you a good idea of what it looks like.
Again, thank you for following along so far! I’m having a lot fun writing and drawing for this : ) (at least, before I crank the pain factor up to 11).
See you in the next chapter!

Gai: Has anyone ever stopped to wonder why we’re still alive?
Kakashi: Oh, yeah. All the time. By all likelihood, we shouldn’t be.
