Thanks to the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC through NetGalley and a finished copy through a goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
✩🕰️🍁Review:
Goldbeck’s debut is a work of art, just like the film it plays homage to.
“You, Again” follows Josh, a hopeless romantic, and Ari, a commitment-phobe, who first meet after learning that they are both sleeping with the same woman. The wrong kind of sparks fly and the two are not eager to cross paths again. But years later, as they’re both nursing breakups and heartache, a chance encounter leads to friendship. Before they know it the lines of their platonic relationship begin to blur.
It is no secret that this novel is a “When Harry Met Sally” retelling and I am totally here for it! Like the film, Goldbeck’s timeline jumps forward, capturing the pair’s chance encounters and most pivotal moments. I like how these moments are not only comprised of their highest points in life, but also their lowest points. Goldbeck is also intentional in leaving out any mundane details that will overwhelm the reader as she guides them through a large span of time, which I appreciated.
Just as we are able to get glimpses of both Harry and Sally’s thoughts and feelings in the film, each chapter of the book alternates between Josh and Ari’s perspectives. I loved reading from both points-of-view because they exposed me to their raw emotions, making me emotional in turn when they came to the realization that they were right for each other at the wrong time. It hit me so hard because I became fully invested in their development from enemies to friends to lovers and only wanted them to get their happily ever after.
Goldbeck is certainly one to watch in the romance space! I look forward to reading what she puts out next!

"Maybe being in love is knowing that you'd live it all over again—every part, suffering included—to get right back to the place where you're standing."
You, Again by Kate Goldbeck has now become one of my favorite romance novels. Lovers of a good slow burn love affair will want to read this immediately. Instead of a windswept, fast paced relationship, you get to watch two people fall apart and come together over a span of years.
While I don't usually love having to bear witness to characters that self sabotage so thoroughly, this book made it easier by having a realistic timeline of personal growth. There was space for the love to come about organically, nothing felt forced or trope focused.
It was also refreshing to have such a relatable example of living through a dark emotional time. It felt like not only were Ari and Josh treading water together, but I was right there with them treading water too.

Book Review: "You, Again" by Kate Goldbeck
I’ve never seen “When Harry Met Sally.” A few months ago, I asked my mom if it was a movie she’d recommend. She said yeah, definitely. I never got around to watching it. It is now, however, at the top of my List. Because I would give anything to experience a fraction of the emotions that I felt while reading this book, and given that this story is a modern twist on the 1989 classic, I believe those emotions are within reach via a few clicks on Amazon Prime.
Ari and Josh are at the center of “You, Again” by Kate Goldbeck. They just can’t seem to stop running into each other of the course of a few years in the wildest of circumstances, and their opposing views and love and relationships leave them at odds and exchanging witty blows that border on hurtful but also sharp and hilarious. It isn’t until they’re both wallowing in their lowest emotional points that they find friendship with each other. Friends with no benefits. Except touching companionship and sparkling chemistry. One night, their friendship shifts into something they cannot come back from, and the resulting angst is raw and poignant. Ari and Josh feel like real, flawed individuals who need to figure their shit out before becoming what the other needs. The resolution feels earned, and you’re left feeling confident that Josh and Ari are two halves of a whole. There is immeasurably more I want to say about “You, Again,” but everyone needs to discover the complexities of this love story themselves. It’s so worth it. 5/5 stars.

You, Again by Kate Goldbeck
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Comedian Ari and Chef Josh have nothing in common…except for the fact they are sleeping with the same girl!! You, Again follows them through the years and their floundering relationships as Ari and Josh continue to make new mistakes, but somehow find their way back to each other. First as enemies, then as friends…but could one of them ever fall first?
When a book is described as a modern day When Harry met Sally, I have to read it…and You, Again did not disappoint! It had the charm, wit and setting of WHMS while still being unique with hilarious banter, and 21st century dating problems. Ari’s character, while disarmingly humorous, gradually opens up which endeared me to her more. While pretentious (I say that lovingly) Josh, has his heart on his sleeve and a frown on his face, a combo that I discovered is my ideal man😂 This story instantly became one of my favorites because it showed true friendship and how love could be found when people are at their lows. Do yourself a favor and read You, Again and try not to fall in love with it!

• review: you, again •
Sometimes you go into a book expecting some laughs and swoons, and then find yourself three hours later weeping but happy about it. Which was exactly my experience with You, Again by Kate Goldbeck.
This has a bit of a sit-com set-up: both Ari and Josh are sleeping with the same woman. And though when they (accidentally) meet, they annoy and antagonize the hell out of each other, they also have fun. And this is the basis of their relationship as they run into each other over and over again in NYC across several years, until they both are in very emotionally low places, and become depression friends.
This story is incredibly character-driven and a sloooow burn, but oh my God, it’s great. There’s so much banter it will exhaust you, the angst is sometimes sky-high (which, for me, is perfect), and these characters are frustrating and deeply flawed – but that’s also why you’ll love them.
