Super self indulgent but to me there are four classes of favourite characters:

Kin: Relatable, can and will superimpose your goals, fears, ideals and experiences on them because they're just so damn similar to you

Simp: Self explanatory. God they're so hot they could step on you and you would thank them (related note: kin and simp ships just hit different)

Smol: They're your babies. You love them and they're precious. Can do no wrong in your eyes even if they're occasionally so stupid.

Beloved: These are like your best friends. You adore them to bits but why are they such idiots?

Thinking about how underrated the Foggy Swamp Tribe was in Avatar.

In the show they’re mostly played for laughs. They don’t wear pants, they have thick accents, they don’t seem to know much about the Northern and Southern Water Tribes. But they're a lot wiser than they're given credit for. Not to mention they're big dang heroes.

The Banyan-grove tree

Philosophically, the swamp is fascinating. Their home is centered around a banyan-grove tree, a cross between a mangrove and a banyan—two trees symbolizing life and death.

Mangrove trees are the nurseries of the ocean. Sea life migrates to mangrove forests to lay eggs in the protection of their murky root systems. Bato may look down on the swamp people and make a snide comment about them not wearing pants, but the swamp people are the stewards of ocean life.

Banyan trees are trees of death. The banyan is a parasitic plant that grows by latching onto another host plant, eventually choking the host to death. Banyan figs are also pollinated through death. Wasps crawl into the immature fig, lay their eggs, and die inside it.

So this tree needs death in order to live. And it can’t provide shelter and food for animals without the death of other animals. You can see how this cycle of life and death is reflected in their worldview—which is completely ride or die.

Everything is connected.

The first thing they do once the gaang stops attacking them is call them kin. They bring them home and treat them like family. And I think the swamp people really do see them that way.

They could have comfortably sat out the war. They didn’t. The war might not have affected them personally, but they still felt responsibility to help.

Death is an illusion. 

They’re not even scared on the Day of Black Sun. They don’t seem afraid of death at all. They keep cat-gators as pets! For fun! Katara and Sokka are distraught by the visions of dead loved ones they see in the swamp gas. The swamp people live in the swamp gas all the time. Death is all around and they do. not. care. In fact, they embrace it, treat it like a normal, necessary part of life.

Sometimes I wonder what happened to the swamp people after the Day of Black Sun. They surrendered along with the other adults, buying the children time to flee. The swamp people have their own section in the crowd at Zuko’s coronation, so presumably they were released. But released from where? Were they locked in a prison for water benders like the horrific one Hama was imprisoned in? What happened to them in Legend of Korra when Kuvira harvested the banyan-grove’s vines? Where was their kin when they needed help?

Tlok Lord of the rings au because i'm squishing my hyperfixations together like a crazy lil 5 year old.

Korra- I'd say dwarf... she matches the stereotypical dwarf personality to a T. Notoriously stubborn, loyal and hardy. The most resistant to the corruption of evil as well. Also, controversial opinion... out of the Krew, Korra deserves a beard most. Also. Give her an axe. Or a sledgehammer. Let her wreak havoc. I think her family would come from Khazad-dûm and be directly related to the line of Durin. Though I feel like she'd reside in the Blue Mountains and unlike most of her kin, she'd have an appreciation for water and the sea.

Asami- Elf. Elf. With her glorious hair and agility??? Hell yeah. She'd be descended from the Avari and live in Mirkwood. I think the moral ambiguity and hostility of the Mirkwood elves touches nicely on Asami's original role as a villain. Also coming from such a combative area would have her learning combat as well, if even better, than her canon counterpart.

Also korrasami would be super cute as a dwarf/elf relationship lol. Korra's already canon shortie. And it would replicate their little rivalry in season 1. Just instead of fighting over Mako, they're fighting over centuries of mutual racial animosity.

Bolin and Mako - ok. Im getting real controversial here. Hobbits. Fucking hobbits. Now. Hear me out. More Brandybuck/Took coded hobbits I'd say. Probably grown up in Bree... tiny orphans in a big world. So sad.

Bolin is an easy pick. Although he's pretty big and bulky, his character has a lot in common with typical hobbits. Not a coincidence that my two fave characters are him and Samwise Gamgee... I love my dirt himbos. Bolin has that gentle, cheerful hobbit vibes. And he likes food too lol.

Mako also has hobbit vibes, I'd argue. However he has a lot of that hobbit typical caution ans suspicion towards the outside world. I could see him valuing a home and prosperity...give this man a hobbit hole He's so stressed he deserves it.

Tenzin, Kya and Bumi. - half elves, Rivendel. Tenzin is basically Elrond, ok? Bumi chose humanity good for him. Kai is the scruffy human they adopted à la Aragorn.

Lin and the Beifongs- honestly was stumped at this one... but I kinda think humans, particularly Dúnedain of Arnor. A noble people, now acting as Rangers, protectors of the land... matches Lin, our favourite chief of police, huh?

KaTaang vs. Zutara: on the basis of Cultural Imbalance.

Despite how much the ATLA showrunners do mental gymnastics to tell us Katara was totally fine being with the Avatar without taking a second to wonder how that would affect her personal wants/needs, it’s still apparent that the relationship had a cultural imbalance.

Everything about the narrative post-ATLA implies that Katara at some point had to set aside her dying Southern WaterTribe customs and focus on Aang’s practically extinct customs.  Just as an example, see Katara’s behavior in The Rift comic, compared to Toph’s, when it comes to following traditions unquestionably.  She supported Aang’s traditions and customs without even understanding where they were coming from, or wondering if they were outdated or went against things she believed in.

Also, to put things more in perspective about a woman of the SWT being with a young monk from the Air Temples...  

Imagine, for a moment, that you were from a meat-eating culture and starting a relationship with someone whose not only a strict vegetarian... but someone who has a strong, deeply-rooted religious set of principles on how they see living creatures, conflict, and the universe in general-- not to mention, the only person in the world left behind to preserve and pass on this ancient way of life.

Yeah.

No way could Katara ever eat meat, or wear furs, or hang pelts in their house.

If anything, she would have her own separate SWT room to honor those things in her own private time.  If she’s lucky, she would share these things with Kya and Bumi but definitely not Tenzin.  Aang would not want his next of kin around anything that would taint the air-benders’ way of life.  (It’s implied in Legend of Korra that Tenzin’s cultural upbringing was strictly air-nomad, too.)

Let’s not deny it; Katara was proud of her SWT heritage -- we see her passionately demonstrating so in episodes like “Imprisoned,” “Bato of the Southern Water Tribe,” and “The Puppetmaster” -- and there’s no convincing me that the Katara we saw in ATLA wouldn’t have fought hard to play an active part of the SWT cultural reconstruction, keeping those traditions alive not just in her homeland but in her own everyday life.  I have a hard time believing that Katara and Aang didn’t fight at least once about this.  

And you better believe that things got worse when they started having kids.  

By then, Katara would be trapped in a relationship with the Avatar and the Last Airbender, internally dealing with the auto-forfeiture of her culture.

Furthermore, exploring the concept of parenting, Aang didn’t grow up with parents.  He didn’t “get” the concept of co-parenting between a mom and dad.  He didn’t really stay at the temples long enough to understand discipline - Gyatso seemed to go pretty easy on him on that regard.  All Aang knew was mentorship from the monks, learning to deal with community and conflict in a peaceful, non-consequential way.  Aang ran away at the age where he should have started learning about accountability and responsibilities... but he won the arrested-developmental lottery when he met Katara.

Katara was always vouching for Aang’s decisions, defending his behaviors, protecting his child-like innocence.  Aang was comforted in this notion that Katara would always be there, at his side, with everything.  She would always be there to physically and emotionally “pick up after him”.  Katara groomed Aang to focus only on his duty as the Avatar and whatever he personally wanted/needed, setting aside her own needs and keeping any possible opposing opinions to herself. (This is grossly apparent with their behavior in the post-ATLA comics.). 

This is the kind of behavior that validates why Katara’s character in Legend of Korra is placed in the sidelines, all of a sudden... only seen as the Avatar’s wife and mother to the Avatar’s children.  She doesn’t carry an identity enough in the narrative to be praised by any of her accomplishments other than what she did for the Avatar. 

(Yeah, Katara was a healer, and she did outlaw blood-bending... but did that really do anything?  She wasn’t able to heal Korra either time she attempted to do so, and blood-bending was running rampant despite the outlaw.  Plus, this is just a fraction of what Katara’s passion in the original show could’ve shown us.  Our girl could’ve moved mountains for the new world, had her narrative been able to carry its own weight outside of the Avatar’s narrative.)

Compare all of that to Zuko, who understood fatherhood and learned about the qualities of kind, loving father thanks to his time with Uncle Iroh.  He learned about the qualities of a healthy, supportive relationship based on partnership and honesty... because let’s be real: Zuko spent enough time with Sokka/Suki to know that was not the kind of relationship he had with Mai.

Zuko and Katara understood each other, communicated honestly and openly, and respected their wants/needs without forcing any ideas or principles on them.  Zuko learned to respect and appreciate the SWT culture because of what his people did trying to conquer it... and I strongly believe he would help bring that nation back to fruition.  

And, Katara and Zuko both come from meat-eating cultures.

Of course, Aang would feel hurt and bitter about Katara choosing Zuko at the end of the story... but I still imaging Aang growing out of that attachment, finally seeing what Katara wants and needs.  He would support that relationship of his two best friends. The most selfless people he ever met.  His mom, and his dad.
