In this course we are going to get closer to nature. We will be explorers entering a world of new species, trees, fauna. We will take notes of our discoveries: from the smallest creatures to the density of the forests, from the texture of the trunks to the green hills, collecting everything that catches our attention. We will also work on materiality and the origin of color with Kremer Pigmente who will guide us in the preparation of our own colors, which we will use to create unique and personal artwork. This beautiful pigment I’m working with today is Pyrrole Orange PO73. It’s a DPP pigment from @kremerpigmente , which stands for di-keto-pyrollo-pyrrol. It’s more opaque than other organic pigments but can still be used for beautiful washes in watercolor. 

The Pyrrole pigments are great and non toxic alternatives for the lead molybdate and cadmiums with in the red/orange pigment options. From the Kremer website: ‘’Because of growing concern about possible health hazards related to the use of cadmium pigments in the coatings industry, chemical companies have long sought after a possible organic substitute.’’

This PO73 is a great solution for those concerns. It’s the most chromatic pigment currently known. Chroma means how much color (or wavelengths) it reflects. It’s not an orange pigment with the highest value, or what we would consider as a ‘’brighter’’ orange. For me, I’d like Benzimidazolone PO62 for that. Which is more towards the yellow side of the spectrum, whereas PO73 is more of a scarlet-orange, leaning towards the red side of the spectrum. This is also visible in it’s spectral reflectance curve which I make in the video post of this color. trying something new with a piece of yellow Moroccan ochre from Kremer pigments. Drawing directly onto the paper with the stone. The stone feels very greasy. It probably has clay in it. Therefore, the drawn lines can be activated with water. Then I use self made water/acrylic inks, made with earth pigments. I use iron ore (bean ore collected by myself), moraine stone powder, manganese black and a mix of various hematites from Kremer pigments. The inks are easy to make. Just put a bit of pigment into a small jar and add some water and a few drops of gloss acrylic varnish or painting medium (or watercolor medium),. Stir, and the ink is ready to use with a brush or a reed pen or for pouring directly onto a surface. Up to now I don't know how long these inks will be good, so I make only small amounts at once. They need to be stirred up every time you want to use them. I think this might have been one of the reasons this paint fought me so much here. They did not like the Canson XL mixed media paper at all. The Alizarin Crimson Deep especially separated into granules. The Furnace Black was a pain too layer, it did not sink into the paper and would come up with the lightest of brush strokes. 09.05.2022 - Exkursionen zu Willi Siber und zu Kremer Pigmente

Bereits Ende März besuchte der Freundeskreis den Künstler Willi Siber. Die Teilnehmer*innen konnten Kunst aus nächster Nähe erleben und Informationen aus erster Hand erfahren.  ...und die Aussicht war auch nicht schlecht!

Anfang Mai ging es zu Kremer Pigmente! Vielleicht nicht jedem Menschen ein Begriff, aber in Künstler*innenkreisen genießt der Familienbetrieb im beschaulichen Aichstetten einen ausgezeichneten Ruf. Maler*innen aus der ganzen Welt schwören auf ihre Pigmente.

Spannend ist es allemal, wie aus dem Ursprungsprodukt - etwa einem mineralischen Stein - letztlich Farbe entsteht.

Eine riesige Steinmühle hilft schon mal, die Mineralien zu zerreiben. Hier ein schönes Blau. Eine Farbe, die in der Natur eher selten vorkommt.

...und dennoch findet man an diesem Ort eine unglaubliche Anzahl der unterschiedlichsten Farbtöne. Ein Regenbogen ist nichts dagegen! Auch kein Wunder, denbn laut Geschäftsführer David Kremer kann man eigentlich aus nahezu allem ein Pigment gewinnen. “Wurzeln oder Steine, einfach zerreiben.”

Today I found a little heaven 🤗! It is truly an early Christmas to me 🤩(and I finally found the tiny travel-size muller ). After visiting PigmentTokyo I finally had time to look into pigmentstores in Munich and found one store solely for Pigments and was surprised by the reasonable and inexpensive prices as well as the range of products and the service. I will have to get a third job I think XD! One of the more opaque colors in my line, PW6:1. Buff Titanium. This naturally tan, unbleached version of titanium white can perfectly be used on its own. As a mixer, it mixes beautifully soft pastels and soft dreamy earth tones. Ideal for landscapes, portraits and anything with flowers. For that reason, I’ve added it in my mixing palette instead of a true white. I just love what it can do with bright colors! What do you use Buff Titanium for? Or how would you use it? experiment: antique papyrus, 23.5 K Gold keaf, Roetel (red bole) black iron oxide and titanium white ink first step of experimental painting The antique papyrus is made by leaving the papyrus stripes in water for a few days, until fermentation starts (smells a bit rotten). No chemicals added. A brown color is the result. Looks almost like wood.
