I like to fancy souls as being made out of light. And some are all shot through with rosy stains and quivers.. and some have a soft glitter like moonlight on the sea... and some are pale and transparent like mist at dawn.

“Gilbert Blythe is going to teach too, isn’t he?”
“Yes”— briefly.
“What a nice- looking fellow he is,” said Marilla absently. “I saw him in church last Sunday and he seemed so tall and manly. He looks a lot like his father did at the same age. John Blythe was a nice boy. We used to be real good friends, he and I. People called him my beau.”
Anne looked up with swift interest.
“Oh, Marilla— and what happened?— why didn’t you— ”
“We had a quarrel. I wouldn’t forgive him when he asked me to. I meant to, after awhile— but I was sulky and angry and I wanted to punish him first. He never came back— the Blythes were all mighty independent. But I always felt— rather sorry. I’ve always kind of wished I’d forgiven him when I had the chance.”
“So you’ve had a bit of romance in your life, too,” said Anne softly.
“Yes, I suppose you might call it that. You wouldn’t think so to look at me, would you? But you never can tell about people from their outsides. Everybody has forgot about me and John. I’d forgotten myself. But it all came back to me when I saw Gilbert last Sunday.”

Sometimes I think about how Anne tried to make sure her children never suffered the way she had--overworked, neglected, desperately trying to love a world that had seemingly abandoned her--
Only to have them suffer in a way she never had, never would. Anne was a teacher and caregiver at 17, but still had her little joys, her frivolous outings, her friends; she got to grow up slowly, and adapt.
But her children came of age in war. Rilla grows up faster than Anne did, and started from a lower benchmark of maturity because Anne and Gilbert made a point to let her stay the baby. Anne's youngest son, the one she nearly died for, is not going to be the "boy-brother" Rilla saw off at the train station when he comes home. Nan and Di rarely come home from school, too busy with their own war efforts. All of her children grow up without her watching (and one will never grow up at all).
Just. Thoughts.

TV Appreciation of:
Anne With An E
(2017-2019)
Aesthetic:
Summary & Review:
Anne With An E is an adaption of the classic L.M Montgomery tale Anne of Green Gables that was broadcasted on Netflix. The series stars Amybeth McNulty (who can also be recognized as Vickie in Stranger Things) as the imaginative orphan Anne, who moves from dark and abusive life to one of love and friendship. Anne is an uniquely spirited and imaginative young woman that ultimately transforms the lives of her adoptive family Marilla and Matthew as well as the town. Anne With An E differs in multiple places from the book but is still able to maintain the charming qualities that have enraptured audiences for generations. The series not only tackles challenges that occurred in the 1890s but also social and political issues of the modern era. It’s a beautiful take on the classic that adds more to love. Also Gilbert (Lucas Jade Zumann) is everything that I need. He’s so precious and handsome! I also love Bash and Mary (and of course Delphi)— New characters added to the story of Anne, who will inevitably steal your heart. I can just continue to rave on how wonderful and delightful this show is!
Trigger Warnings:
- Gore
- Child Abuse/Abuse
- Racism
-Sexual Harassment
-Violence
-Homophobia
-Mentions of suicide
(Anne With An E is much darker in certain aspects and tones than that in its book counterpart.)

Emily turned and caught at his arm.
"Oh, not good-bye, Dean–not good-bye. Can't we be friends still? I can't live without your friendship."
Dean took her face in his hands–Emily's cold face that he had once dreamed might flush against his kiss–and looked gravely and tenderly into it.
"We can't be friends again, dear."
"Oh, you will forget–you will not always care–"
"A man must die to forget you, I think. No, Star, we cannot be friends. You will not have my love and it has driven everything else out. I am going away. When I am old–really old–I will come back and we will be friends again, perhaps."

There was a freshness in the air as of a wind that had blown over honey- sweet fields of clover. Home lights twinkled out here and there among the homestead trees. Beyond lay the sea, misty and purple, with its haunting, unceasing murmur. The west was a glory of soft mingled hues, and the pond reflected them all in still softer shadings. The beauty of it all thrilled Anne’s heart, and she gratefully opened the gates of her soul to it.
“Dear old world,” she murmured, “you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you.”

I don't love the Sullivan adaptions of AoGG, especially not what he did to Gilbert--but the "fishing for lake trout" joke was really quite good.
