A university janitor who turned off a freezer after hearing multiple “annoying alarms,” ruined more than 20 years of research, according to a lawsuit filed against his employer by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate New York.
The janitor, who is not being sued in the lawsuit, was a contractor with Daigle Cleaning Systems Inc., who worked for several months in 2020 at the private research university in Troy.
The school is seeking more than $1 million in damages and legal fees from Daigle Cleaning Systems as a result of the incident.
The lab’s freezer contained over 20 years of research, including cell cultures and samples, to which a “small temperature fluctuation of three degrees would cause catastrophic damage,” according to the lawsuit filed with the Rensselaer County Supreme Court.
The college does not believe the janitor is at fault but instead blames Daigle Cleaning Systems for failing to properly train and supervise him, according to the suit.

I just finished this book on the Soviet judiciary entitled Justice in Moscow by George Fifer and I was especially intrigued by their tendency to do all the investigation prior to the trial to minimise the chances of someone innocent getting called to the dock and maximizing the chances of the guilty being convicted. Along with the obshechevesvennosts who were elected by the work collective ( factory, collective farm, departmental store, etc) which recounted the life of the accused to the court and recommended the court to either maximise or minimise punishment. And that these obshechevesnnosts played a crucial role in chairing Comrade Courts and these were the judicial aspects of the withering of the state under communism which the 22nd CPSU Congress held to be in the near future and how many of these courts also served an educative purpose by holding seminars, open courts and lectures on socialist legality and its necessity in the building of communism.

The state forensics lab that handled the evidence in Areli Escobar’s capital case was so bad that Texas officials closed it for good five years after a jury sentenced the then-32-year-old to death in 2011. The evidence in the case was so tenuous that the Travis County District Attorney’s office ultimately sided with the defense, arguing that Escobar deserved a new trial.
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed that the case deserves another look.
“We are thrilled the Supreme Court stepped in to give Mr. Escobar a chance to prevent a grave miscarriage of justice in his case,” said Daniel Woofter, one of Escobar’s defense attorneys, on Monday. “We’re talking about a life or death case where all of the parties, including the prosecutors, don’t think he should be put to death without a fair trial,” he previously told the Observer.
Escobar was sentenced to death for the murder of 17-year-old Bianca Maldenado Hernandez, who lived in the same apartment complex in Austin. Escobar has always maintained his innocence.
The Court of Criminal Appeals, the state’s highest criminal court, will now reexamine Escobar’s case, although it may not take up the matter for several months. The Supreme Court’s order asks the Texas court to take special notice of the prosecution’s change of heart.

On this day, 139 years ago ( 10.12.1883), Andrzej Wyszyński, Prosecutor-General of the Soviet Union in 1935-1939 and the Minister for Foreign Affairs in 1949-1953 was born. Amongst other things, he wrote "The Law of the Soviet State" ( I posted about it a while ago) which is one of the finest Marxist-Leninist texts on law and amongst other things it talks about the 1936 Soviet Constitution.
