A close look at every award that will be handed out during Sunday night’s broadcast, from an intense actress showdown to the potential for history to be made.

After a year of television that felt more than a little unusual given the pandemic that surrounded it, the 2021 Emmy Awards will be an opportunity to celebrate the shows that got us through, whether via fantastical escapism, well-costumed romance, or the optimistic wisdom of a certain football coach. Just like last year, Vanity Fair’s experts have their eyes on a specific trio of shows—this year it’s The Crown, Ted Lasso, and The Queen’s Gambit—to take home the bulk of the prizes, but there is also plenty of room for surprise. Will The Handmaid’s Tale be the comeback kid? Will the final season of Pose soar to the top? Was it really Agatha all along? The Boys Bridgerton PREDICTED WINNER: The Crown The Handmaid’s Tale Lovecraft Country The Mandalorian Pose This Is Us

In the culmination of its long, triumphant awards season, Netflix’s The Crown should finally win the top prize for its acclaimed fourth season. The period drama has won every equivalent precursor, from awards given by key industry guilds like the PGA and SAG to those given by notable outside groups at the Critics’ Choice Awards and Golden Globes, and found an entirely new audience with its rich rendering of the Charles-Diana saga. In the time since its airing, a serious challenger has not emerged to overtake it, even with the support for Pose’s final season or the sheer popularity of The Mandalorian. It’s time for The Crown to finally take the, well, you know. —David Canfield

ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Sterling K. Brown, This Is Us Jonathan Majors, Lovecraft Country PREDICTED WINNER: Josh O’Connor, The Crown Regé-Jean Page, Bridgerton Billy Porter, Pose Matthew Rhys, Perry Mason

Tighter than it first appeared, this race comes down to two very different contenders. The smart money may actually be on Billy Porter, considering the overall Emmy performance of Pose for its final season—the FX drama has already won three trophies this year via the Creative Arts awards—and the fact that Porter has already won this category. He’s nominated again for a true showcase of a season that’s hard to deny. But as Schitt’s Creek proved last year, the Emmys love a sweep, and The Crown—with its deep ensemble and clear overall front-runner status—looks tailor-made for one. Josh O’Connor stepping into the series’ center with his indelible Prince Charles is likely to find embrace amid the wave. —David Canfield

Uzo Aduba, In Treatment Olivia Colman, The Crown PREDICTED WINNER: Emma Corrin, The Crown Elisabeth Moss, The Handmaid’s Tale Mj Rodriguez, Pose Jurnee Smollett, Lovecraft Country

Emma Corrin’s devastating breakout turn as Princess Diana sits comfortably atop this list—which feels a bit strange to say, given that she’s surrounded by awards heavyweights like Oscar winner (and costar!) Olivia Colman and multi-Emmy winners Uzo Aduba and Elisabeth Moss. But so it goes. And in fact, her chief competition is probably another first-time nominee—Mj Rodriguez, repping the surging Pose and having already made history as the first trans nominee in the category’s existence. Will voters jump at the opportunity to make even more history? It’s a long shot, but don’t count her out. —David Canfield

SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Giancarlo Esposito, The Mandalorian O-T Fagbenle, The Handmaid’s Tale John Lithgow, Perry Mason Tobias Menzies, The Crown Max Minghella, The Handmaid’s Tale Chris Sullivan, This Is Us Bradley Whitford, The Handmaid’s Tale PREDICTED WINNER: Michael K. Williams, Lovecraft Country

Voting closed before the tragic passing of Michael K. Williams on September 6, but the actor, whose work included The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, was already predicted to win this award for his performance in HBO’s now canceled Lovecraft Country. Winners of this category are often well-respected veteran actors (Peter Dinklage, Ben Mendelsohn, John Lithgow) who voters seem to be honoring not only for their current project, but their entire body of work. And that would be the case for Williams—a five-time Emmy nominee—this time around. It would be a bittersweet way to remember a beloved member of the acting community who created some of TV’s most memorable and vulnerable characters. —Rebecca Ford

SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

PREDICTED WINNER: Gillian Anderson, The Crown Madeline Brewer, The Handmaid’s Tale Helena Bonham Carter, The Crown Ann Dowd, The Handmaid’s Tale Aunjanue Ellis, Lovecraft Country Emerald Fennell, The Crown Yvonne Strahovski, The Handmaid’s Tale Samira Wiley, The Handmaid’s Tale

Dowd won in 2017 for her work on The Handmaid’s Tale, but with this crowded category stacked with her costars from the show, they’ll likely split the votes. And Anderson has always been the front-runner anyway for her transformative performance as Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of the Netflix series. She already won the Globe earlier this year, and in all likelihood will beat out her own costars to take the Emmy as well. —Rebecca Ford

DIRECTING FOR A DRAMA SERIES

There’s a strong correlation between this category and the best-drama-series Emmy, which should give the edge to drama front-runner The Crown, and particularly the propulsive season four finale, “War.” But we’re spotting potential upsets in the beloved series finale for Pose and particularly the Handmaid’s Tale season four finale, “The Wilderness,” directed by Oscar-nominated documentarian Liz Garbus. Given how much The Handmaid’s Tale outperformed expectations in the nominations, we suspect this might be a place for the show to surprise again. —Katey Rich

Oddly enough, The Crown has never won this category, despite the dense history layered into each episode, which we suspect should give series creator Peter Morgan an edge here. For potential upsets keep an eye on Pose and the long list of heavy hitter credited writers; this is, after all, the category where Friday Night Lights and The Americans finally won after years of being overlooked. Pose is surging in Emmy attention for its final season, and you never know just how far that affection might go. —Katey Rich

Here she is! The full list of books I read in 2020. My goal was to read 52 books again this year, but once lockdown started I upped it to 100, and I ultimately surpassed even that goal!! I think reading is so important for my personal growth and mental health, so the last two years I have made reading a big priority in my life, and it is the best choice I could have made. This year especially, I found reading to be such a comfort and such a great tool for keeping the quarantine blues at bay. 2019 Hugo Award finalists announced

The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.

Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.

I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!

One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."

A who’s-who of Oscar nominees, A-listers and top Hollywood executives came out to support the Motion Picture & Television Fund at its 17th annual “Night Before” party, which raised $5 million in support of the MPTF.

One of the key events of Oscar weekend, the “Night Before” party, held Saturday on the Fox Studios lot in Los Angeles and co-sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, drew past Oscar winners including Mahershala Ali (also a current nominee, who came with wife Amatus Sami-Karim), George Clooney, Viola Davis (with husband Julius Tennon), Leonardo DiCaprio, Marcia Gay Harden, Allison Janney and Octavia Spencer.

Among the 2019 Oscar nominees who were at the event were Amy Adams (with husband Darren Le Gallo), Yalitza Aparicio, Glenn Close, Willem Dafoe (with wife Giada Colagrande), Adam Driver (with wife Joanne Tucker), Richard E. Grant, Sam Elliott, Regina King, Spike Lee, Rami Malek and Viggo Mortensen.

Close, Grant and King made their way to the party just a few hours after collecting Film Independent Spirit Awards earlier in the day for best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress, respectively.

The 2019 host committee included a lineup of talent including Adams and Le Gallo, Ali, Tanya Haden Black and Jack Black, Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg, Amal and George Clooney, Close, Colagrande and Dafoe, Bradley Cooper, Tom Cruise, DiCaprio, Lady Gaga, Janney, King, Malek, Mortensen, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, Rachel Weisz, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, and Constance Wu.

Other A-listers at the exclusive, invitation-only bash included event maestro Jeffrey Katzenberg, who serves as chairman of the MPTF Foundation, along with recent Golden Globe/Emmy/SAG Award winner Darren Criss (with new wife Mia Swier), Chris Evans, Tiffany Haddish, Jon Hamm, Mindy Kaling, Keegan-Michael Key and producer wife Elisa Pugliese, Helen Mirren, Mike Myers, Christopher Nolan and Taylor Swift with boyfriend (The Favourite actor) Joe Alwyn, in addition to past Oscar nominees Ava DuVernay, Samuel L. Jackson, Carey Mulligan, Anna Paquin with husband Stephen Moyer, Will Smith with wife Jada Pinkett Smith and Hailee Steinfeld.

Black Panther stars Angela Bassett, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan also came out to support the cause, as did Crazy Rich Asians stars Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Henry Golding and Constance Wu.

Top executives including Disney CEO Bob Iger and studio chair Alan Horn, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts (with Universal’s Ron Meyer), WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey and Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, Universal Pictures chair Donna Langley, Sony Pictures chair Tom Rothman and Paramount Pictures CEO Jim Gianopulos also were at the bash, where guests enjoyed specialty foods from Carmelized Productions by Jon Shook & Vinny Dotolo.

Funds raised during the “Night Before” party are used to support the MPTF, which assists industry members in Hollywood of all ages by providing financial assistance, crisis counseling, caregiving support and the retirement facility in Woodland Hills that film and TV veterans call “home.”

In total, the annual event has raised more than $85 million since its inception in 2003.

THR returned as one of the presenting sponsors of the event alongside Delta Air Lines, Ford Motor Company, L'Oréal USA, Target, Yahoo! and YouTube. This marked THR's sixth year as the sole media sponsor of the party.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of the presenting sponsors and donors for making the ‘Night Before’ an amazing evening, one that once again brings the industry together in the spirit of a community that truly takes care of its own,” Katzenberg said.

The Morning After - Oscars 2019 Edition

My favourite photo from the 91st Academy Awards

My two favourite moments from last night’s Oscars are better represent in audio, those being Olivia Coleman’s speech when she won Best Actress over the heavily favoured Glenn Close, and when Rayka Zehtabchi exclaimed “I can’t believe a film on menstruation won an Oscar!”

It was fun keeping up with everyone’s reactions and remarks during the awards, and chiming in with many of my own even though I do, as always, find the speed of twitter a little breakneck. Also friends and colleagues who, knowing that I’m a big movie buff, came by or message me to discuss last night’s show. At times we got animated enough that random passerbys and company VPs felt the need to chime in, which is the best gathering of the minds possible in my world.

Here’s a list of the winners and what I thought of each recipient:

Best Picture

While not entirely classy of Spike Lee to turn his back when Green Book was announced, he was able to joke about it later that every time a film about driving was pit against his own film, he would lose to it (Do the Right Thing lost to Driving Miss Daisy) My silver lining was knowing that TIFF audiences picked yet another Best Picture winner. We do have quite a track record, don’t we? I really thought the Academy was going to make a different type of history in diversity by awarding a foreign film (Roma) with Best Picture. Or at least Black Panther, that would’ve been cool too.

I was ecstatic to have guessed wrong in my Oscar picks for this category. Both Olivia Coleman and Glenn Close were such strong contenders (as was Melissa McCarthy). Glenn Close carried her film, Olivia Coleman elevated her already very good movie to another level.

I think a writing Oscar is an excellent award for Spike Lee to win. I’m rarely familiar with the original story vs its adaptation, therefore it’s hard to say who did the best job of adapting their source material. That said, any way you slice it, BlacKkKlansman was a great script.

While I put my money on Green Book, I can’t fathom why anyone would think it’s a better script than The Favourite nor Vice (I didn’t see First Reformed, and I think Roma is at least on par with Green Book) Destroyer was an original script right? I’m personally disappointed it wasn’t up for any writing awards.

Again, please to be wrong in this category. If anything I would have said First Man stood out more in audio achievement, but visual effects were also excellent and I’m glad the film got at least one Oscar because it is such a fine technical achievement.

Also a fine, inspiring acceptance speech by Domee Shi. I didn’t see any other shorts but I did watch Bao several times over and my Torontonian pride swelled when it won. Growing up Asian, there’s a lot of embedded humour in this short as well, the husband character is still my absolute favourite.

Fixing up a film in editing doesn’t warrant it as best edited film of the year! I cannot believe Bohemain Rhapsody won in this category. Especially again films such as The Favourite and Vice, the former’s editing has a hand in shaping its visual mastery, the latter is entirely built from the art of editing. What the hell?

Just because a film is about music doesn’t automatically qualify it for best sound! Have all the Academy voters gone out of their mind??? If you’re gonna go by that misguided logic then at least give it to A Star is Born. It’s been a day and I still can’t fathom how anyone could think the sound editing of Bohemian Rhapsody is better than First Man, A Quiet Place, and Roma!

Cinematography

This was a pretty stacked category and Alfonso Cuaron did make a beautiful looking film. I don’t know if it was more striking that Cold War or The Favourite, but all in all he did deserve the win.

Fine. At least it wasn’t Roma, and I get that more often than not the period film usually wins it, so it’s cool to shake it up. The Favourite is still my fav.

So, that’s it for awards season 2019. I did pitiful in my predictions this year because I was way off on the technical awards, not to mention some big ones too like Best Picture.

I’ll wrap it up by recommending that you watch First Man (with a good sound set up as it is superb technical, has a great score, and supporting actress Claire Foy), Destroyer (for its story and Nicole Kidman), The Hate U Give (that delivers a much stronger message than Green Book ever will), and Beautiful Boy (where supporting actor Timothee Chalamet actually has a sizable role).

If you were to chart a graph of my happiness and passion for covering live music since the begging of this site in ‘09, it’d probably peak sometime in 2014, and 2015 would start the stow decline. I now found myself pondering a question I wouldn’t be was possible many years earlier. Is it possible to burn out on concerts?

I’ll dive into that question during my thoughts on 2016 (the end of my blog), but in 2015, I did manage to see some memorable shows. I invite you to click on the bold print below for links to each of the 20 shows, where you’ll find photos, videos, and maybe even a few words.

These are just a handful of some of my favorite shows from 2015, and to see the full list of every show I covered in ‘15 (with links) click the ‘14-’16 archive here.

The Lone Bellow at the Paradise Rock Club (2.12.15) - These guys were visibly enjoying their success. This ended up being a super fun show

Sturgill Simpson at the Paradise Rock Club (2.20.15) - This would be my first time seeing Sturgill live, and even though he was feeling under the weather, his performance exceeded my expectations, and he managed to crank out some killer jams.

Damien Rice at the Orpheum (4.7.15) - I remember when he released his album, O, back in ‘02. I love that album, and it took me 13 years to see him.

Sufjan Stevens Hartford, CT (4.12.15) - I’m a huge Sufjan Stevens fan, and even though I enjoyed The Age Of Adz (2010), I was patiently hoping for a new album similar to his earlier material. On February 16, 2015, he shared the first single “No Shade In the Shadow of the Cross” from his upcoming album Carrie & Lowell, and I couldn’t have been happier.

Luckily, I managed to hear the full album before it’s official March 31st release, and was blown away. This album was a welcomed bright spot during a dark time in my life, and I couldn’t wait to hear it live. On a whim, I decided to attend the third show of his tour and traveled to Hartford. While I officially didn’t cover the show, I did capture “Fourth Of July” on video, which was an incredible and intense version of the song. He was still working out a few kinks for many of the new songs live, so it wasn’t a flawless performance, but I loved the show, and the new tunes sounded beautiful..

Sufjan Stevens (Citi Wang Theatre) (5.4.15) - This show was slightly more polished than Hartford, and Sufjan seemed to be finding his groove with the new tour. I recorded “Blue Bucket Of Gold”, which was an epic13-minute long version of the tune.

Album Review: Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell (5.11.15) - I wasn’t only enjoying the new album, I was obsessed with it. So much so, I was inspired to write an album review, which is something I never do, but was pleased with how it turned out. You can read it here.

The Tallest Man On Earth (Calvin Theatre) (5.13.15) - I always enjoyed going to Northampton for shows, and this was a special one, as it was the tour opener for his new album, Dark Bird Is Home.

Courtney Barnett at the Sinclair (5.18.15) - Courtney was touring behind her debut studio album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

Boston Calling Day Fri (5.22.15) (Sharon Van Etten, Tame Impala, Beck)

Boston Calling Day Sat (5.23.15) (Krill, DMAs, Mo, Run the Jewels, Tove Lo, Gerard Way, Marina and the Diamonds, St. Vincent, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, My Morning Jacket)

Boston Calling Day (5.24.15) (The Ballroom Thieves, Halsey, The Lone Bellow, Lucius, Jason Isbell, Vance Joy, TV On the Radio, Tenacious D, Jack Black, The Pixies)

Levitate Music Festival - Marshfield (7.11.15) - The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Dr. Dog, Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue - Levitate started back in 2013, and this was my first time attending this festival, which I enjoyed.

Newport Folk Festival Day Fri (7.24.15) - (Joe Pug, Bahamas, Elephant Revival, Angel Olsen, Leon Bridges, The Lone Bellow, Calexico, Strand Of Oaks, The Tallest Man On Earth, Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell, Heartless Bastards, My Morning Jacket, Roger Waters)

2015 was absolutely stacked for Newport. On paper, it doesn’t get much better, and they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan going electric back in ‘65.

Sadly, this would be my final year covering the Newport Folk Festival, as I ended my blog in the spring of the following year. However, I’d attend the festival one last time in ‘16, just as I began - a fan looking to hear some music from artists I liked, in a beautiful waterfront setting among some fine folk.

Newport Folk Festival Day Sat (7.25.15) - (Spirit Family Reunion, Joe Fletcher, The Barr Brothers, Joe Pug, Langhorne Slim and the Law, Nikki Lane, Jason Isbell, Courtney Barnett, Sturgill Simpson, Tommy Stinson, James Taylor, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists)

Newport Folk Festival Day (7.26.15) (The Ballroom Thieves, Christopher Paul Stelling, Brian Fallon, Jon Batiste, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Nightsweats, Lord Huron, The Felice Brothers, First Aid Kit, Blake Mills, Laura Marling, Hozier, J Macis, Shakey Graves, Dylan ‘65 Tribute, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Willie Watson, Dawes, Robyn Hitchcock)

Van Halen at Xfinity Center (8.1.15) - This was one of those bucket list shows for me. Oddly, I’d never seen Van Halen, and this was a pretty cool experience.

Boston Calling Day Fri (9.25.15) (Gregory Alan Isakov, Of Monsters and Men, The Avett Brothers) - As far as three-artist, day #1 concert goes, it doesn’t really get much better for me.

Boston Calling Day sat (9.26.15) (Stephen Malkmus, Sturgill Simpson, Father John Misty, Walk the Moon, Chromeo, Chvrches, Alt-J)

Boston Calling Day (9.27.15) (Alabama Shakes, Bully, Daughter, Mister Wives, Nate Ruess, Ben Howard, Hozier) - This would be the last Boston Calling I would attend, and the festival would move from Government Center to the Harvard Athletic Complex in May of ‘17.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats (Royale) (11.6.15) - After first seeing the at Newport, I just had to see the band again. I’d actually see them four times in Denver from 2016-’18.

Lake Street Dive (Club Passim) (11.18.15) - This was part of their “Memory Lane Tour,“ which included three Cambridge stops - two nights at Club Passim and one at the Lizard Lounge. This very tiny Club Passim show (capacity 100) was quite special, and included songs from their upcoming album.
