Behold, my latest and most enamouring new obsession:
Tumblr media
Malina, Lady of the Chief of the Northern Water Tribe. As if Red Lotus child OCs weren’t niche enough
#my art#artists on tumblr#the legend of korra#lok malina#still feel like that’s too vague of a tag but I can’t come up with anything better for now#and yeah. she has completely stolen by heart and I don’t know how to feel about that#don’t think I ever was this attracted to my own art before#to be fair the design isn’t mine. it’s very heavily based on something nina drew back in 2021#because I did not have the energy or creativity to come up with my own thing#but the art is all mine and I genuinely adore it. super proud of myself which is a rare occurrence#anyways. kat and I spent three days digging this niche lower and lower and now have a he#*hell of a lot of lore about this basically nonexistent character#for lore about a lady from the North Pole a lot of it is rather hot… to the point my cheeks are burning non stop#I would say I’d let her do anything she wants to me but in my very specific aroace-adjacent case it’s more like#I’d let her tell me to do anything she wants to her#if that makes any sense and I have not completely lost my goddamn mind yet#okay. enough yapping. back to the art itself#lazy background because I suck at those and am not currently attempting to learn them. I’ll probably do that over the summer#about time anyway. my characters have been placed against an off-white background for far. far too long#this is the first piece in just over a year that isn’t tagged with sotrl. which is kinda weird tbh#I’ve been drawing my OCs almost exclusively for nearly 5 years so it is genuinely surprise I’m branching out#*surprising#less branching out and more diving from one hole into another but y’know#anyway. in my personal and very correct opinion she turned out absolutely gorgeous#her servants are way too lucky and unalaq is way too much of an idiot. no offence to vaatu but he could never beat out this#and I also have Kat’s personal and very correct opinion to back up my own. two against the void. once again we’re winning#I wanna draw her a lot more bc she has completely possessed my brain. I just wish character interactions were easier to draw 😭#I’ll figure it out. just need to fight my visualisation issues for a proper idea. brb#okay I’m almost at the tag limit so. in summary:#she 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵

Personally I find it really funny that based on what the twins said in the Book 2 finale re: having to tell their mom about what happened to Unalaq, it's literally canon that Unalaq's wife a) exists, b) is alive, and c) is just chilling in the Northern Water Tribe
She took one look at all the spirit fuckery her husband was getting up to and went "Well that's none of my business" and honestly I respect that
#oh and when I say spirit fuckery I mean it in both the literal and metaphorical sense. blame kat's latest raava and vaatu fic#yeah I'm just gonna start posting random LoK opinions on here now. this blog's been dead long enough#not really an incorrect quotes girly anymore sorry#not even a girl anymore. but you know#most of my red lotus and oc posting will remain on my personal blog though bc no one wants to see that#anyway. yes. Unalaq's wife. when I say the avatar franchise has a mom problem this is exactly what I mean#80% of characters don't have a mom. the moms that are alive either have little to no screen time or mentions#or they're basically Schroedinger's mom in the sense that they exist but not really#the exceptions being like. pema and suyin. and maybe senna though she also has very little screentime#my point is. the twins are younger than korra. I know avatarverse has a precedent for putting kids on the throne. looking at you zuko#but really we should have gotten unalaq's wife as chief of the nwt#introduced her in book 3 during the lead up to p'li's prison break#but that's just my objectively correct opinion#northern water tribe chief raspberry when#(according to avatar wiki her name is malina so I've been calling her raspberry in my head ever since I found out#malina means raspberry in russian that's why. probably in a bunch of other slavic languages too idk I'm not an expert#and she shares a name with katara and sokka's weird white stepmom from the comics which no sane person considers canon. so that's fun)#the legend of korra#unalaq

Gliak def had a point in North and South comics. Hakoda was a really bad chief if I’m being honest, I mean he basically let the North invade and almost take control.
I also didn’t like his new relationship with that lady from the north. She and her brother seemed fake from the start. Especially since she admitted that her plans were to take over the south for oil and thought they were less than the north. I didn’t like the comics at all.
Thank you! Malina and Maliq were boujie as heck. It wasn't unrealistic, how they looked down their paternalistic noses on the Southerners, but that they were portrayed as having a point got to me. Oh, nothing to worry about, we'll just turn you into oil rig workers and erase your traditions because we know better than you rubes.
I don't think Hakoda was being a bad chief, I think he was doing his best. The South had been poor and sidelined for so long, he must have thought it was necessary to keep up with the rest of the world. And he had experience in war, not intrigue. The Northerners were taking advantage of him (Though keep in mind my own judgement may be clouded by a crush.)
(I will say nothing about the romance aspect, I don't want to think about that picture any more than I have to. Oogie!)
My main complaint of North and South was how progress was treated as better than tradition. New buildings (except Gran-Gran's bc she's awesome), new projects, and a complete disregard for the locals' way of life.
I'm not saying "progress" is always bad, but it has to come from working with people, not over them.
Gilak used some bad methods... but meta-ly, he didn't have to be written that way. Wanting your culture preserved and your people respected is not villainous.
North and South did a number on me for a few days when I read it. Gentrification was sticking its sickly nose into my hometown, and Thod, in particular, made me painfully aware of the real-life fact that stories have been lost, traditions forgotten, languages relegated to the past, because someone came in and decided that all that was backwards.
Drilling for oil is a very real problem. DAPL and the Alaskan wildlife reserves come to mind. Cultural loss is also pretty painful! You can miss what you've never had.
ATLA was great. LOK was great. The comics were growing pains. Real heavy, all of Yang's.
OK, that was unexpectedly long. And it may or may not make sense. But gosh-darnit, thank you for saying this. It's my first non-spam in my ask box. TYSM and stay opinionated!

Curious anon here! What are your second favorite ships for the characters you write?
Thanks for the ask!
My second favorite ship for Kuvira is Korvira (with Opalvira as a close third).
My second favorite ship for Lin is Linzin (although Linumi is quickly catching up).
My second favorite ship for Baatar is Baatar x Malina (my OC, a waterbender from Agna Qel'a who Baatar met at Ba Sing Se University).
My second favorite ship for Zolt is Zolt x Aiko (my OC, a high-ranking member of the Agni Kai triad).
I've truthfully never thought about a Suyin ship other than Sutar, but I think the idea of her and Varrick could be interesting.
This ask made me realize there are so many characters in LOK that I haven't written yet. I really need to branch out.

Northern Water Tribe Royal Family
Tumblr media
After his uncle Arnook and father Korrak, Chief Rokkan becomes the ruler of the Northern Water Tribe for many years and has seen leaders come and go in his lifetime. He is moderate, but seen as a progressive in comparison to the past chiefs of the Northern Water Tribe, by abolishing segregation of gender in waterbending and in formal education, so boys and girls are educated in the same subjects together, unlike in the past where boys and girls were in seperate school and were not allowed to be treated equally in Agna Qel'a society.
Later in life, Chief Rokkan gets married and has two sons Tonraq and Unalaq, having lost a daughter in between the births of his sons. Rokkan favours Tonraq, because he reminds the old chief of himself as a young man, before his father became Chief Arnook's successor and started taking own his life seriously. He sometimes wishes Tonraq was more like Unalaq, when it comes to having respect for the gods and the spirits. The reverence of the spirits in the royal family is because of Princess Yue ascending, as the moon spirit and the people of the Northern Water Tribe has built shrines and altars for Yue, who sacrificed herself to save their tribe from possible extinction.
The destruction of the spirit forest, due to Tonraq’s rashness angers Rokkan to the point of banishing him from the tribe, for the good of everyone and showing that not even a tribesman of royal blood is exempt from the consequences of crimes and around the respect for spirits and their environments. Chief Rokkan was saddened that his firstborn would fall so far from grace, had thrown his future away and left a betrothed behind. Unalaq was now Rokkan’s heir and was far more spiritual than his brother had been. Unlike his firstborn, Unalaq was interested in politics and the inner machinations of the royal court.
Chief Rokkan and the water sages arrange the marriage of Unalaq to Malina, a woman from a respectable noble tribe to secure the succession and to avoid another succession being muddled, after Yue’s ascension. It was the first time a royal wedding was held in the Northern Water Tribe for deacdes and there was something for the people to be excited about, after learning of Tonraq’s banishment and fearing for the future. The marriage is the signal that Unalaq will rule the Northern Water Tribe after his father, because of how spirituality is very important to the culture of the Northern Water Tribe and the future ruler has respect for the spirits and the deities worshipped in the northern tribe.
One day, a female Northern Water Tribe sage predicts the next Avatar will be born from the royal line. Chief Rokkan takes this prediction to heart, believing that a child from Unalaq and Malina’s union will be the future Avatar because of his youngest son’s spirituality and keeping faith with the spirits and has a wife, who is just as religious as her husband. The old chief feels the absence of his banished firstborn son, but he knew it was the right choice to make. For the stability of the entire tribe and to make Chief Rokkan realise that Unalaq was better prepared for the northern throne and leadership than Tonraq, with the water sages arranging Unalaq’s marriage to Malina to symbolise that fact.
After years of ruling the Northern Water Tribe, Chief Rokkan passes away peacefully with his young grandchildren and extended relatives surrounding him, but on the other hand, he never got to meet his other granddaughter, the one born in the Southern Water Tribe, the one named after his father and who will end up becoming the Avatar, per the female water sage’s prediction.

Do you think Katara ever called Malina ‘Mom’?
I don’t think she did. I don’t think she could.
Sokka called Malina ‘Mom’, I have absolutely no doubt about that. He was nothing but supportive of his father finding love again, and Malina certainly endeared herself to Sokka, both through her progressiveness and her food. (Hey, Sokka’s an easy guy to please.)
If Hakoda and Malina ever did get married, I have no doubt it would be very natural for Sokka to call her Mom almost immediately. And of course, Malina would be absolutely honored, brought to tears of joy even, the first time she hears it.
But not Katara. No, I don’t think it would be nearly as easy for Katara. She wouldn’t resent Malina for marrying her father. She would accept that, at least. But I don’t think Katara could ever see Malina as a mother. Anytime she tries to force herself to call her Mom, as a show of solidarity with her family, the word would always taste just.... wrong in her mouth.
And Malina would notice this, and would make it clear that Katara doesn’t need to see her as a Mom. That is entirely Katara’s choice and no one in the family would think less of her for choosing not to.
So she doesn’t. It’s like Sokka said, no one would ever be good enough for her father because no one else was Mom. Katara recognizes the selfishness of these feelings, but she cannot deny that’s how she feels.
No, it’s simply... too late for Malina to be ‘Mom’. She would only ever be ‘Dad’s new wife’. And, in time, both Katara and Malina would come to accept this and see this as enough. More than enough. This is good. It’s healthy, natural. More than that, it’s honest.
Still, no one is perfect. Do you think Katara would ever just... silently resent how easy it was for Sokka to call Malina ‘Mom’? How easy it was for Sokka to replace their real Mother?
Of course, Katara would scold herself for thinking that. Of course Sokka isn’t replacing Mom. Of course their father isn’t replacing Mom. They aren’t getting rid of the old, they’re just accepting the new.
Still, she can’t help the way she feels.
Do you think her kids would call Malina Gran-Gran?
Do you think Katara would allow her kids to call her Gran-Gran?
What do you think Katara’s reaction would be the very first time baby Bumi ran up to Malina screaming ‘Gran-Gran!’

m*lina/hakoda
senna/tonraq
for the ask game
bakoda-
love them. love them so much. love them in every form of the word. i like that this fanon ship gives people a slice of an older queer couple because so many lgbtq+ ships in the fandom are for younger characters and its nice to see fics and fanarts of a middle aged mlm couple, you dont rlly see that too often and i love that for them. i also really like when its bato/hakoda/kya i think thats such an interesting ot3. ive never seen them written poorly or ooc which is so rare and who knows maybe there are some fics that make them ooc or written poorly and maybe im lucky that ive only ever gotten good content from them but like its so rare to have a ship that is always good quality content that i see from them. 10/10 would reccomend
m*lina/hakoda
ik this is from the comics. i have never read the comics. i am scared to read the comics because ive seen so many posts talking about how awful and problematic they are. i cant really give a brutally honest opinion on them seeing as i dont know anything about them, but imma say i dont like it solely based on the fact that i already only ship hakoda with kya and/or bato. also judging by the asterisk im guessing we dont like malina so there we go. its a no from me.
senna/tonraq
milf/dilf solidarity. amazing parents to korra. you can tell they care a lot about each other especially when tonraq is on trial in LOK. like this is a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP and i love that for them. also anyone who raises their child to be as badass as korra is deserve a medal. good parents. good marriage. good people. this is the good good

ATLA/LoK naming conventions
EDIT: updated 17/09/2020
Water tribes
In contrast to the names in other nations, most water tribe names are entirely made up. Many names finish with -a, particularly women's, and with the exception of only one name, all water tribe names have what is known as the schwa phoneme. A lot of the names involve hard K sounds, with female names normally beginning with K and male names ending or having a K in the middle. Some examples are:
Female
Katara
Kanna
Kya
Eska (the only one of the women to break the beginning K)
Korra
Male
Kuruk (the only one of the men to break the middle or ending -k)
Hakoda
Sokka
Amok
Arnook
Iknik
Maliq (exception to the K theme, but has similar sound)
Noatak
Tarrlok
Sangok
Nuktuk (the name of the character Bolin plays in the film The Adventures of Nuktuk: Hero of the South, the name itself an homage/inspired by the 1922 docudrama Nanook of the North)
There are notable exceptions to the naming conventions, such as Yue (Chinese for “moon”), Senna (from the Inuktitut goddess Sedna/Sanna), Maliq (most likely from the Semitic name Malik, though possibly its Greenland Inuit counterpart), Malina (Uzbek and various Slavic languages for “raspberry”), Desna (etymology unknown, mostly likely an anagram of Sedna), and Nini (etymology unknown).
Despite their mostly fictional status, several names are also Inuit in origin, and other largely inspired by. The Twitter blog @LowArtic gives examples: Tonraq, Unalaq, Noatak, are some. The WordPress blog LJWritesDotCom also gives a comprehensive list of which water tribe names are inspired by or directly are Inuit-Yupik ones (they do give the disclaimer that some acclaimed origins and variants are sketchy, so take it all with a grain of salt).
As an aside, however, that Katara is written as 卡塔拉, with Kǎ (卡) meaning “to check, block or card”; Tǎ (塔) meaning “pagoda”; and Lā (拉) meaning “to pull”. Sokka is written as 索卡, with Sǔo (索) meaning “to search, demand, ask, exact or isolate”; and Kǎ (卡) meaning to “check, block or card”.
Air nomads:
All of the airbenders shown in-universe have been presented with Tibetan names, and thus likely follow Tibetan naming conventions. These names, known as personal names, are given to children regardless of their gender, with only a few being specifically male or female. Aang is the only exception here, his name written as 安昂, with Ān (安) meaning “calm, peaceful, tranquil”; and Áng (昂) meaning “to rise, to lift, to raise”.
Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation:
The majority of names in both nations are of Chinese origin. The Earth Kingdom in particular has the most diversity in naming, with characters also having names that are Japanese, Korean, Sanskrit, and Uzbek. As well, the Earth Kingdom is the first place we ever see characters with surnames in the series (bar the later appearances of them in LOK) with the Beifong family.
The Fire Nation also boasts names that come from Japanese and Mongolian. Something rather noticeable is the -Z sounds in Royal family names (Sozin, Azulon, Ozai, Azula, Zuko, Izumi) and I- names (Ilah, Iroh, Izumi). Whether its traditional or a naming trend is unknown.
In total only a few people have surnames, and nearly all of them are affluent: the Beifong family, the Sato family, former United Republic of Nations President Raiko and his wife; Iknik Varrick and current United Republic of Nations President, Zhu Li Moon.
Nine names in total are particular exceptions to the world's pan-Asian and pseudo-Inuit theme naming: Nini, as stated above; Poppy; Buttercup; Ursa (Latin for “she-bear”); Noatak's alias, Amon (Egyptian, from the god Amun); Korra (Greek, meaning “maiden”); Ginger, though it's possible it's a stage name; and Hope (though according to the creators in the extra for Serpent's Pass, her name was going to be Xi Wang, meaning "hope" in Chinese). Maliq is most likely from the Semitic Malik (meaning “owner” or “king” depending on the spelling), although it is also a Greenland Inuit name meaning “wave”. Malina is used in various Slavic languages, but it is also Uzbek (meaning “raspberry” in all of these languages).

Name: Atsuka Age: 17 Gender: Female Family ATLA:
Natsuko(Mother)
Onartoka(Father)
Hikari(Sister)
Kazsu(Bother)
Antai and Soru(Paternal Grandparents)
Nukka(Paternal Aunt)
Haruko and Ryuu(Maternal Grandparents)
Hoshi, Rei and Ayumu(Maternal Aunts)
Family LOK:
Northern Water Tribe Man (Husband)
Tonraq & Unalaq (Son)
Senna & Malina (Daughters-In-Law)
Korra & Eska (Granddaughters)
Desna (Grandson)
Physical Description: Atsuka has the darker completion of the Water Tribes and a slightly rounded/oval look to her face with dark brown hair; her eyes however are a dark brown color which is more common in the fire nation then the water tribe. When in the fire nation she tended to wear cloths that showed her rank in society but after leaving she would wear whatever clean clothing she could get a hold of. Her hair is normally kept long and is dark brown/black hair that has a bit of a bluish purple tint to it in some lights. She’s become adapt to bending the water in her hair to get it into the style she wants and get it to stay that way since leaving home due to not having anything to actually brush it with.
Personality: Blunt but tries to find good in people to. Some people find her off-putting at first because she doesn’t lie to make you feel better unless it’s an extreme situation that requires calm. She’s nicer to her friends and has a huge soft spot for Zuko who she considers like a brother. She’s more aggressive then you’d think a Waterbender would be, being able to keep calm some of the time but also being extremely irritable other times; being more like a firebender in temper.
Her Father and Mother are fairly certain that this double nature is due to the fact that she inherited bother Fire and Water Bending, and have taken it as a sign that though she was able to use both no one is meant to have two elements like that. Not unless they are the Avatar. Because of this they tried to ask for help from Onartoka’s Father, hopping that he could take her Firebending. However neither her or his Mother answered their pleas.
Unlike her Sister however she never felt like an outsider, neither inside or outside of the fire nation. This is likely due to her double nature allowing her to adapt fairly easily to different environments. However her Temper can cause her problems at times
Bending Or Fighting Style: Her mother was an firebender and her father a waterbender and she inherited both types of bending, as far as she knows she’s one of a kind and the only reason that this was possible was because of her spiritual ancestry. However she only can do the very very basics of fire bending at the moment, she thinks this is due to having been so far along with her waterbender training before she learned about her ability’s as a fire bender that has stunted her progress with her second element..
Goals: Mostly she just wanders around aimlessly but hopes to one day find her sister, or maybe even Zuko. She also hope’s that the war will be over soon, and that she can return home to see her Mother and Father again once it is and maybe go with them to the Northern Water tribe as a family.
Fears: She hates thunder storms and huddles herself in a tent whenever they come when she’s traveling, covered in her blanket. This is pretty ironic seeing as if she was better with her Fire-Bending she could likely create storm’s herself(*hint hint* I have a verse where when she dies she takes a place as the Spirit of Storms)
Bad Habits: TBA
History: It was discovered at the early age of two that Atsuka had inherited her father’s ability of water bending. Her father and mother thought that was all she had inherited and her father took every opportunity there was to train her in the bending art of water bending even though he knew his tribe wouldn’t like that, at age 8 it was discovered that she was also a fire bender and her mother started instructing her in that art as well.
She mastered water bending fairly easily, having had it down perfect by the time she left home, but has always had trouble with fire bending; only being able to make small flames and redirect other fire bender’s attack’s so far. She was pretty good friend’s with Zuko when they were young having met him from being the daughter of a general who is friend’s with his Uncle. She never really getting along with Azula and openly, bluntly and maybe even a bit rudely putting off her offer’s of friendship and sticking close to Zuko who she saw as the brother she(at the time) didn’t have. Atsuka however never did tell Zuko her biggest secret, of her being able to bend both Fire and Water; knowing that her parents would be very angry if she told him. Shorty after Zuko was banished Atsuka told her parent’s that she was leaving, she wanted to go to the Northern Water tribe to learn healing. The only reason she hadn’t gone before was because of her friendship with Zuko, and wanting to be there for him after his Mother’s disappearance because of his poor relationship with his Father and Sister.
Her father and mother tried to convince her not to go but she told them that the Water tribe’s were part of who she was and that she deserved to know about them threw more then just story’s her father told her. Soon after she left, making the slow trip to the northern water tribe, catching a ride with a fur trader as he was returning home. When she made it the northern water tribe she immediate started lesson’s on how to heal with her bending and quickly befriended a couple of other healers around her age. However when it was learned that she knew combat bending she became an outcast. She planned on leaving, however about 4 days before she was going to she ended up ‘sleep walking’ to the Spirit Oasis. When found there the next day and asked how she had found the place she explained that her Aunt had led her there in her Dream, explaining that she didn’t know she’d actually gone there until they had woken her up.
When asked by Chief Arnook she reluctantly explained that her Father was the Son of the Moon and Ocean Spirit’s daughter, and that he had grown up here in the tribe with no notion that he was adopted. She then went on to explain the rest of the tale, what had happened to her Aunt after they had left the tribe. How he had ended up with her Mother and the fact that he had left in order to learn more about her Water Tribe heritage. She then explained that her Aunt had led her there with a message from her Grandmother—or Atsuka’s Great-Grandmother. She wanted her to take a bit of water from the pool so that if she needed it she would have it. They were a bit reluctant to accept the explanation until the faint image of a women that one of the advisory’s recognized as a Healer who had gone missing, confirming that the girl’s name had been Nukka. The advisor having courted her for a short time soon after she came of age.
After this she was welcomed as a member of the tribe and taken in to live with her Father and Aunt’s adoptive, though she didn’t explain who her Mother was; simply telling them that she had come here with the intention of learning more about her Water Tribe Culture and the art of Healing.
Imperfections: Her bending will at times fail her when her emotions get to jumbled, which is part of the reason she tries to be up front about how she feel’s about things.

TumblrFrostbite: Do you wish that Yasuko Sato had screen time in TLoK?
I do and I don’t? I wish Asami had been given the benefit of like... one or two flashback scenes?? She wasn’t too young to remember her mother when the murder happened. But we get 1 (one) photograph and that’s IT which I think is a symptom of Asami not getting as much solo plot or development but. -_-
As far as AtLA/LoK’s inability to let people have mothers who are (living) characters with their own agency and plots... that’s a whole nother post entirely >.> and Asami’s dead mom is just another paragraph in that essay tbh. I could write for an hour on that.
Let’s just say there’s a lot of reasons why Yasuko and Malina and Pema and Senna actually like... get screentime in IoaFB. At at least 50% of them aren’t outright evil so that’s something.
