I love that they confirmed that Tommy is a combat veteran in the show because it gives a nuance to his character that we didn’t have in the games.

Maybe he was a sniper? The rifle he carries has a scope when he and Joel return to the house for Sarah. It helps explain his expertise in TLOU2 when he takes Ellie with him to kill the stragglers + his skill when he’s hunting Abby & Manny down, after eliminating the rest of Manny’s crew.

It gives insight into why he’s able to kill the soldier without hesitation because maybe he’s done it before. Why when Sarah is dying and Joel calls out to him for help, he barely reacts because he’s seen it before, he already knows she’s dead.

I just think it’s such a neat detail.
