The Disability Library
I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.
And so, friends, Romans, countrymen, I present, a special disability and chronic illness booklist, compiled by myself and through the contributions of wonderful members from this site!
As always, if there are any at all that you want me to add, please just say. I'm always looking for more!

THE FULL HISTORY OF THE MICK JAGGER & MARSHA HUNT (A.K.A.”BROWN SUGAR”) RELATIONSHIP!!!
First, some background on the model, singer, actress, novelist, playwright, activist, icon, 60s goddess, and the woman who inspired one of the Rolling Stones’ greatest hits, “Brown Sugar”, Marsha Hunt. She is often described as London’s own Josephine Baker and is celebrating her 77th birthday today!:
Marsha Hunt was born on April 15, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA and is the youngest of 3 siblings. Her mother, Inez “Ikey” Hunt, worked in an airplane factory during World War II, and her father Blair Hunt Jr. graduated from Harvard and was one of America's first Black psychiatrists.
She was raised mostly by her mother, aunt and grandmother who had roots in the deep south (Mississippi delta) and who she’s described as an “extremely aggressive and ass-kicking independent woman.” Her father later committed suicide when she was 9 years old (but she never found out how or why).
After moving out west to California with her family, she graduated high school at the top of her class and later attended UC, Berkeley in the mid-60s where she wanted to study psychological anthropology.
While at Berkeley, she became friends with a slew of interesting people like activist Mario Savio and Huey P. Newton, who later became one of the founders of the Black Panther Party.

Even though she thrived academically and was very involved in student activities, she became bored with college life and wanted to experience life outside of the country and pursue her real passion – music. In early 1966, she sold her car and some books, and trailed off to London with only $1.83 in her pocket.
Around that time, London was THE city to be in, and was even dubbed “Swinging London” for being the epicenter of art, culture, fashion and of course music, especially due to the popularity of famous acts like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
When Marsha first arrived, she slept on the floors of mutual friends, took odd jobs (including one as an au pair), and even appeared as an extra in Michelangelo Antonioni's box office hit film, “Blow-Up,” which also featured the British rock band, the Yardbirds.
SHOCKINGLY, in that same year she actually saw the Rolling Stones for the first time during their UK tour at the Royal Albert Hall in London because she wanted to see Ike & Tina who were the supporting act on the bill. Girls were going crazy over the Stones, but of course, she was more impressed by Tina’s show-stopping performance! (Purrrrr 💅🏿)

After roaming the city, making new friends and trying to find steady work, Marsha ended up auditioning for a blues band fronted by British blues musician, Alexis Korner, who was looking for backup singers. Coincidentally, he was the exact same guy who gave the Rolling Stones their start back in 1962. Later on, she was offered another backing gig for Long John Baldry’s band, Bluesology. John is also a longtime friend of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Though she loved music and worked really hard at it, Marsha always claimed that she was never a good singer. People in England just assumed she was because they thought all Black Americans had talent.
She then lived with English blues singer, John Mayall, who actually wrote a few songs about her including, “Marsha’s Mood” and another song coincidentally called “Brown Sugar”. Around this time, she also became good friends with the founding members of Fleetwood Mac, famed British artist Kaffe Fassett, and keyboard player for Bluesology, Reg Dwight (a.k.a Elton John).
[LEFT: 19 year old Marsha sporting a wig in London; RIGHT: Marsha with a young Elton John].

Around the time Marsha broke things off with John, he was also putting a new band together, which included a young guitarist named Mick Taylor, who showed up at the audition without a guitar. He later became another good friend of Marsha’s.
In late 1966, Marsha met musician Mike Ratledge from the British rock band, Soft Machine. She was having trouble getting a visa extension to stay in England, so they got married on her 21st birthday. She later claimed it was a marriage in name only as they “never held hands and never kissed".
[LEFT: Guitarist Mick Taylor & John Mayall in the mid-60s; RIGHT: Marsha’s “husband” Mike Ratledge of Soft Machine.]

That same year, Marsha’s hair started to fall out from using chemical relaxers, and after wearing wigs for a while, she finally cut it all off and vowed to never straighten it again. Hence, she started sporting her iconic afro hairstyle making her quite a showstopper in London.
In 1968, she found luck when she was cast in a buzzy new rock musical with an ensemble cast called “Hair.” The musical became an instant hit in London’s famed West End. And even though her character “Dionne” only had two lines, she became the face (or the hair) of “Hair”. The show was a huge success, and also became quite a sensation and social landmark because it highlighted controversial subjects like drugs, casual sex, cursing, nudity, and anti-war rhetoric. While there, she met another close friend, actor Tim Curry.
[BOTTOM: A poster of the hit musical “Hair” that debuted in the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End, 1968.]

Her life completely changed overnight and she instantly became a PHENOMENON, attracting wide media attention. In fact, after the musical’s opening night, the editor of British Vogue sent her a huge bouquet of flowers and wanted her to pose for a photo session, which ended up being a 4-page spread with a written profile. Marsha was also the first Black woman to appear on the cover of Queen magazine as well.
[LEFT: Marsha pictured as the first Black woman on the cover of Queen magazine; RIGHT: Marsha photographed for British Vogue in 1969.]
Tumblr media
She immediately became a sex symbol, celebrity, and the face of the “Black is Beautiful'' movement, which was already taking over America in the mid-60s. This helped her snag lots of modeling gigs and everyone wanted to photograph her. (I mean, sis was booked & busy!!!)
[BOTTOM: More of Marsha’s most iconic shots. *The melanin was melanating, 4C afro was on deck, eyelashes poppin’, lips bussin’...she was a *bad bitch*!!!]
Tumblr media
In March 1969, she signed a contract with Track Records, the same independent label that also repped the British rock band, The Who and Jimi Hendrix, and later said, “There was one luxury that London celebrity afforded me: the freedom to be myself without a single apology for my gap, my freaked-out hair, my brown skin, my slave-class ancestors or my radical views.” Around this time, she also had a short love affair with Marc Bolan, the singer and founder of the English rock band, T-Rex (even though he was much shorter than her 😂.)
She scored a few minor hits during her underrated music career with singles like a cover of T-Rex’s “Desdemona” and her debut single, a cover of “Walk on Gilded Splinters”.
[BOTTOM: Marsha performing the T-Rex cover “Desdemona” live in 1970.]
Tumblr media
The record soon went to the charts and that spring, she was asked to perform on various shows, including a popular British TV program called, “Top of the Pops” where during her live performance the tight bolero suede top she wore nearly came undone and partially exposed her breasts, giving her the reputation as a “bad girl.”
NOW…Here’s the part y’all have been waiting for. Get your popcorn. Y’all got it? Ready? Good!!! 🍿
After her performance aired, Marsha received a phone call out of the blue from Jo Bergman, the then secretary for the Rolling Stones on behalf of Mick Jagger who was actually watching live, asking her to pose semi–nude for a publicity photo to promote the band’s new single, “Honky Tonk Women”. She said, “The picture was going to be of a girl dressed like a sleaze bag standing in a bar with the Stones and they wanted me to be the girl.”
[BOTTOM: Marsha performing "Walk on Gilded Splinters” on ‘Top of the Pops’ in May 1969. This was also the exact moment Mick Jagger first laid eyes on her!]
dailymotion
Marsha, who was not a Stones fan, was already established and didn’t really need the extra exposure. She declined because she had her reputation to think about and said she "didn't want to look like [she'd] just been had by all the Rolling Stones." She also claimed, “The last thing [Black women] needed was for me to denigrate us by dressing up like a whore” among a band of white men.
ENTER MICK JAGGER:
Tumblr media
When she tried to get in touch with Mick to say, "thank you, but no thank you”, he later returned her call in an attempt to change her mind and suggested he come over as he was very intrigued that a girl would turn him down.
Mick then showed up at her apartment around midnight as she claims, “He was framed by the doorway as he stood grinning with a dark coat ... He drew one hand out of his pocket and pointed it at me like a pistol. His silly 'Bang' was precisely the icebreaker we needed to get over my ungracious hesitation before I invited him in, not sure how to salute a notorious rogue who rings me just before midnight and suggests he pop round on a pretext of loneliness.”
They talked for HOURS, well until the sun came up about any and everything from music to social issues and politics, and according to her, Mick “made me squeal whenever he used Melanigian slang (aka Black vernacular/AAVE)”. 🙄🤦🏾‍♀️
Marsha didn’t really find Mick physically attractive at first: “He wasn't beautiful or even striking” however, he was boyish, open, direct, yet seemed quite awkward and shy. She found it a relief that he was nothing like other musicians she’d known or the image the media had of him. He was charming, intelligent, funny, radical and straddled the racial line, much like she did. She also noticed that he had a penchant for Black women, as he claimed “they [Black women] just do something to me”.
The two of them just clicked right off the bat. And things eventually turned hot as they ended up having sex. From there, they embarked on a passionate, but very private, deep romance and year-long affair, at a time when interracial relationships weren’t widely accepted yet.
She didn’t expect to hear from him again, as he had a wide selection of women to choose from, but he wanted to see her and talk all the time because he could count on her. Marsha said, “He knew that I adored him and that he could depend on me…he realized I respected him as I respected myself.”
Mick’s friend and interior designer Christopher Gibbs once said often when he dined with Mick, women who had slept with him would come up to the table and “he’d have absolutely no idea who they were.”
[LEFT: Mick photographed at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London to see the new musical ‘Hair’ for the first time; RIGHT: Marsha performing in the show.]
Tumblr media
1969 was a very rough year for Mick. He was having trouble with his band (which he was practically running by himself) because the founder and guitarist of the Rolling Stones, Brian Jones, was becoming increasingly unreliable and spiraling out of control due to his deep drug addiction and legal troubles which led to him having problems getting a US work visa to go on an upcoming tour. His personal life was also a mess because his long-term girlfriend at the time, pop singer Marianne Faithfull, was also a very serious (and sloppy) drug addict, who often embarrassed Mick and became more difficult to be around. Things had gotten so bad between them, their relationship grew strictly platonic by this time.
Mick and Marianne were quite destructive together and often found themselves in legal troubles due to drugs. Marianne was also quite messy as she previously slept with Mick’s bandmates Brian Jones, Keith Richards and even left her husband, John Dunbar, for Mick who was dating Black soul singer & former Ikette, P.P. Arnold, when they met. P.P. later became pregnant with Mick’s baby in 1967, but had an abortion due to his growing relationship with Marianne.
[BELOW: Mick arriving at a courthouse with his then girlfriend, singer Marianne Faithfull in 1969.]
Tumblr media
Marsha on the other hand, was stone-cold sober and didn’t do any drugs (NOT ONE), which was like a breath of fresh air for Mick, though he dabbled himself. But unlike those around him, he was able to control his habit.
Even though their relationship quickly turned sexual, they were really, really close friends. Mick often retreated to her home to relax, he told her all his secrets, his troubles – he just trusted her. He was completely enamored of Marsha, who many describe as warm, intelligent, sensitive, funny and very easy to talk to. He liked that she didn’t go gooey-eyed and weak-kneed in his presence like most (white) women/female fans did. Instead she had a crisply forthright manner and was almost quite “butch”. The Rolling Stones then manager was even quoted as saying that Mick was “obsessed” with her as she was very exotic and even gave her the nickname “Miss Fuzzy” due to her afro hairstyle.
Ironically, Marsha enjoyed their well-kept relationship and is one of the only people who often calls him Michael instead of Mick, to distinguish him from his Rolling Stones persona.
Since Marsha was a fellow recording artist, they could also be seen together in public without any arousing suspicion—in any case, London still had almost no paparazzi. They would often go to the same parties or events, even with Mick’s girlfriend there, and no one questioned it.
Mick would often pop into some of Marsha’s studio sessions with her band White Trash, and everyone around would be in awe of him.
After officially firing Brian Jones from the band, Mick and the rest of the Stones needed a new guitarist. Marsha promptly suggested her good friend, Mick Taylor (Yes, Stones fans – thank Marsha Hunt for that one!), as a replacement for Brian just days before his mysterious death (he sadly drowned in a swimming pool at his home) on July 3, 1969.
Additionally, when Mick sought a replacement for Jo Bergman, the secretary who handled all the Rolling Stones affairs, Marsha also suggested her friend and tour manager, Peter Rudge - (The same guy responsible for getting the Stones all those huge tours in massive stadiums. Again, thank Marsha!)
Two days after Brian’s death, the Stones played a free concert before a crowd of over 250,000 people in Hyde Park, London, which was previously planned to debut their new guitarist, but turned into a memorial/funeral for Brian. Mick invited both Marianne (who looked to’ up and was in withdrawal from heroin at the time), and Marsha (who showed up looking sexy af with titties bustin’ out of her buckskin suit) to the concert, and rudely and distastefully opened the show with a song called, “I’m Yours and I’m Hers.”
[BELOW: Mick & Marsha at the Rolling Stones tribute concert to Brian Jones in Hyde Park, London on July 5, 1969.]
Tumblr media
Marianne who sat on the other end of the stage with her 4-year old son Nicholas and the other Stones wives/girlfriends, actually saw Marsha that day as she was placed right above the stage in the scaffold VIP section so Mick could look at her while he performed. She later said, “I saw her [Marsha] you know. And she was stunning…If I’d been Mick in that situation, I might have done exactly the same thing.”
Mick arrived at the concert with Marianne, but left with Marsha and spent the night at her place.
A day after the concert, Mick kissed Marsha goodbye, and flew with Marianne to Australia to shoot a biographical film they were both cast in called “Ned Kelly,” based on the infamous bushranger. However, Marianne who was reeling from the recent death of Brian Jones and a horrible miscarriage just a few months earlier, overdosed on 150 Tuinal barbiturates while traveling with Mick and fell into a coma in their hotel room.
[LEFT & RIGHT: Mick & Marianne arriving in Australia to film “Ned Kelly.” Marianne slipped into a coma just hours later from an attempted suicide.]
Tumblr media
At the last minute, Mick was forced to film the movie without her, but phoned and wrote to Marsha, who was extremely frantic and worried about his mental health and emotional well-being, almost everyday. She was scared that he didn’t have the stamina to deal with yet another crisis. He sent Marsha over 10 handwritten letters (some even written on the same headed stationery paper of Chevron Hotel where his girlfriend just tried to kill herself) about his deep feelings for her, his experience filming, being in the Australian outback, his interests, the historic day of the moon landing of 1969, future career plans, his regret at missing her performance at the famous Isle of Wight Festival and other aspects of pop culture (including “…John & Yoko boring everybody…”). The letters also reference the recent death of Brian Jones, Mick’s increasingly difficult relationship with Marianne, and another letter even had the full original lyrics for the Rolling Stones song “Monkey Man”, which was later rewritten.
Mick’s letters also went on to mention the foul Australian winter weather and an unpleasant virus that swept through the unit, a fire that destroyed most of the film’s costumes, along with various accidents – including a prop gun that backfired in his right hand. He was just having a real shitty time. So, he found solace writing to Marsha.
His letters to Marsha showed how pensive and romantic he was. He said things like,“... I feel with you something so unsung there is no need to sing it...” and “If I sailed with you around the world, all my sails would be unfurled”. He also thanked her for being “so nice to an evil old man like me”. And in another steamy note, Mick promises Marsha: "I will kiss you softly. And bite your mouth too."

Mick also celebrated his 26th birthday while filming in Australia and Marsha sent him a huge package of books (which he loves) and albums, including her friend John Mayall’s record “Brown Sugar.” Along with it was a note stating how she missed him desperately.
While still trying to rehabilitate his hand from the prop accident, Mick toyed with a new guitar and started work on a song, which was partly inspired by Marsha, that he initially titled “Black Pussy.” He decided that was a little too direct and changed it to “Brown Sugar” with the lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Gold coast slave ship bound for cotton fields  Sold in the market down in New Orleans  Scarred old slaver knows he's doing alright  Hear him whip the women just around midnight
[Chorus]
Brown sugar, how come you taste so good?  Uh huh Brown sugar, just like a young girl should

Mick later confirmed in a 1995 Rolling Stone magazine interview that the song is a double-entendre: “brown sugar” being the street name for unrefined heroin and of course – sex with a Black woman. The song was a huge commercial success and ended up becoming a #1 hit around the world, making it one of the Rolling Stones’ best-selling records.

While Mick was still filming overseas, Marsha was booked to perform at the iconic 3-day outdoor concert, the Isle of Wight Festival on August 30th, 1969. It was the biggest open-air concert in music history and she was the only female singer billed to perform. She was there alongside acts like The Who, Joe Cocker and even Bob Dylan who hadn’t been onstage in 3 years.
Mick told her in a letter that he was so proud of her and promised her that he was “there in my head and in my heart.” Charlie Watts and his wife Shirley, Keith Richards and Jo Bergman were also in the audience watching Marsha perform.
Marsha also wore custom-made leather shorts to which the press ran with it and by the next fashion season, short shorts were featured. She was the first person to popularize “hot pants”.

After Mick came back from Australia, Marsha was offered a part in a film called “Welcome to the Club” which is a comedy about three Black USO performers sent to Hiroshima in the 1940s to entertain the troops on an all-white base. The film was being directed by Walter Shenson, who had produced the Beatles' films “A Hard Day's Night” and “Help” and shot it entirely in Copenhagen.
She was also asked to fly back to London to shoot another cover for American Vogue which was shot by photographer Patrick Litchfield. (They‘d never had a Black woman on the cover before.)
Mick began touring in America again, his first since 1966, and with the number of girls he had access to, she knew he was keeping himself busy on and off stage.

He even started a short-lived relationship with singer and Ikette Claudia Lennear, as well sparking up a short fling with Devon Wilson, a notorious rock & roll groupie and the girlfriend of Jimi Hendrix who famously wrote the song “Dolly Dagger” about their affair.

But on December 6, 1969 - everything changed dramatically when an 18-year old concertgoer was stabbed and killed during the Stones’ free performance at the Altamont Speedway in California by the Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club, who was the band’s security. Members of the Hell’s Angels blamed Mick for the incident and subsequent to the concert, put a hit out on him and threatened to murder him. This marked the third major tragedy to happen since they’d known each other.

Marsha stayed with Mick after the chaos at Altamont, which the media dubbed “The Death of the 60s”. By this time, he had officially split up with Marianne and moved Marsha into his house on Cheyne Walk where she helped him to transition and readjust his life. It was then their relationship intensified!
This is around the time she got a chance to really know Mick’s friends who lived on the same road, Keith Richards and his girlfriend, actress Anita Pallenberg, who just had a son, but was hooked on heroin. She thought they were nice, but they’d visit or show up unannounced all the time. Their hard drug-taking also scared Marsha, so she kept her distance and didn’t voice her opinion.
She also met Mick’s parents, Eva and Joe Jagger, along with his little brother Chris who was a bit of a hippie and had just returned from India with his American girlfriend. They had no work, no money and nowhere to stay, so Marsha kindly gave them a job painting her new apartment.
That Christmas, Marsha got Mick a puppy and Mick, for the first time, told her that he loved her.
Marsha was in a good place. Opportunities were coming to her fast, she had a new apartment, and she was in love with Mick. She had newfound stability and independence.
In January 1970, they were having dinner at the celebrity hotspot restaurant Mr. Chow’s when Mick said that she’d be a good mother and that they should have a baby together. Prior to this Marsha thought she was just another girl he fancied, as he was a notorious womanizer. But the talk of having a baby made her feel special to him. Her feelings for him were so deep that she also claimed, “I would have died for him.”
She knew Marianne miscarried around the same time Keith Richards’ son Marlon was born. Mick also missed family life with Marianne’s son Nicholas, so wanted to give having a baby a second try.
This fool literally made her take out her IUD coil, they had sex like rabbits, and when she found out she was 3 weeks pregnant, she told Mick who was ecstatic.
Marsha literally said to him, “listen, if you’re not ready and you changed your mind about this, it’s okay.” She was totally ready to get an abortion. But he assured her that’s what he wanted and he was happy.
They had their first argument when it came to naming the baby. Mick wanted a boy who he could send to the prestigious Eton School (the all-boys school where Prince William & Prince Prince Harry went), and he proposed that they call the baby ‘Midnight Dream’. Marsha wasn’t having it and even said, “Imagine sticking your head out of a window to call your child home and yelling, 'Midnight. Midnight! Time for tea.’”
She'd known that he and the band were leaving England for tax reasons and moving to France in the coming year. The Stones were also gearing up for their upcoming European tour.
Even though she loved Mick, he was young and she claimed she was “all for Mick doing his own thing”. They were supposed to be the sophisticated embodiment of an alternative social ideal — parent-hood shared between loving friends living separate lives.
This was around the time of the sexual revolution and people were exploring different types of relationships. Marsha didn’t find gratification in being ‘Mr. So and So’s’ wife, plus Mick was the type of guy to get up at 2pm to start his day - so marriage was sort of off the table. She claimed their relationship “thrived off her being supportive” and she loved to see him “run free”. And since she grew up in a matriarchy, the ideal of a man and woman living together seemed nice but unnecessary. They agreed that Mick would be a good absent father while he toured with the Rolling Stones and Marsha could still have her own career. It was all very modern!
Marsha also feared that her association with Mick would crowd out her own identity. She didn’t like the limelight because it was a discomfort. She also never wanted to be known as Mick Jagger's girlfriend (can you blame her? Like two of his girlfriends tried to commit suicide). Like him, she wanted her own independence.
By June 1969, Marsha told her band and the press that she was pregnant, but did not give up the name of the father. Though one little clever reporter found out it was Mick and threatened to print it. She thought of suing but asked the Stones PR team to link him to another girl. She managed to get through her pregnancy without a media frenzy or being linked to Mick even though they had stepped out together many times and he was ready to have it reported.
While Mick was away touring in Europe, his phone calls got less frequent. The tour was a bit crazy, and although Mick invited her to go to Paris, he knew she'd refuse – she didn’t want to get caught up. But he told her he was lonely and had met someone in Paris that he was taking to Italy. Her name was Bianca. She was Nicaraguan and spoke little English. Mick didn't mention her again, but after the tour, Marsha knew that she moved to his house in England.
His publicist sent her an invite to the premiere of his corny movie, “Ned Kelly,” but he didn’t show up. He also invited his parents to the event and it was there she realized that he didn’t tell them that he had a baby on the way. Mick hardly lavished praise on his parents and even once told the press, “I owe them nothing. They are my parents, that is that…but there are no dues to be made by me to them!”
By her third trimester, having a baby became her whole reality and his passing fancy. He started to forget that the baby was HIS idea.
Despite Marsha carrying his child, practically all references to her and the baby were quickly airbrushed out of his life. Chris O'Dell, Mick’s PA in the early-70s was even quoted as saying, “I never remember him talking about their child. In fact, I wasn’t aware of a baby being around at all. It was almost like [his first child] didn’t exist.”
Marsha was put in a difficult position because it was too late to go back and sometimes he’d phone like nothing ever happened. She claimed his mood would change so quickly, he was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. She also said, “I've discovered that he can burn hot and suddenly cool to below zero.“
She started to worry that he didn’t care anymore, so she tried to squeeze in any and every piece of work she possibly could to hold her up during and past her pregnancy (tv shows, photoshoots, etc.). She also volunteered at a local mental-care center in the autistic unit caring for a 12 year old boy to keep from feeling useless.

At the same time, Mick also did a lot of peculiar interviews, either stating he wasn’t interested in having children or flat out dissing Marsha. During a 1970 interview with London’s Daily Mail newspaper he even said, “For me, life has always got to be on the move and exciting. I love kids, I really do…but it’s not something I’m thinking about.” He of course failed to mention that Marsha was expecting their first child.

Once it was time for her to give birth, a hard-up Marsha was ashamed and reluctant to ask him for any contribution because he never once offered. Mick ultimately gave her a measly £200 to get by, which came with a note saying “I know I haven’t done right by you” and he “loaned” her a ring he always wore.
She had initially planned a natural home delivery to keep the press at bay and because it was the “it” thing to do at the time, but was told by her OB-GYN that her baby was in danger and she had to go to the hospital the next day.
On November 3rd, she dragged her own luggage, and hailed a taxi to the hospital only to be told there weren’t enough beds. Panicked and scared, she went back home quite sure she was going to die from an unassisted childbirth.
When she went back to the hospital the next day for an induced labor, she checked in with her married name “Ratledge” to protect herself (and Mick). On November 4, 1970 after hours of labor, she gave birth to a girl she named Karis Hunt and phoned Mick first and then her mother. That day was the first time Mick actually told his now girlfriend Bianca that Marsha and a baby existed.
While waiting in the maternity ward, the nurses also forgot to feed her and she was so hungry. But being on The National Health, she didn’t complain.
When she checked out of the hospital, Mick sent a bouquet of red roses,  a miniature muse figurine for the baby, a silver spoon, and some cheap Indian earrings for Marsha. He “dropped by” two days later to see his baby but was in a hurry to be somewhere else.
10 days later, he paid another rushed visit, but she took him to the side and was kinda like, “What’s up with you? Why don’t you call or come around more often for the baby” in which he snapped and yelled at her, “I never loved you” and that she was “mad to think that he had”. Of course Marsha, stitches still in, burning and all, started to cry which only made him more mad and he threatened to take Karis away from her if he chose. She stopped and said, “Try it! I’d blow your brains out!!”
In that moment, the loyalty she had for him was gone and she pushed forward and tried to find as much work as she could to support herself and her baby.

Please Do Not Repost My Content Anywhere
As promised, Jack had taken you to both London and Paris to get your mind off of everything that had been happening around you as of lately. He was being supportive as always and was trying to do everything that he could possibly think of in order for you and Urban to apologize to each other. He admits that the argument that he had with Urban had him at a loss for words and he couldn’t quite understand why Urban wasn’t trying to hear you out and give you a chance to explain yourself. That wasn’t like him at all.
You had not only distanced yourself from Urban, but from the rest of PG as well. You knew that anywhere that Jack went, Urban would be following right along with him and PG and you were trying to ease the tension as much as possible. So that resulted in spending more time away from them as much as they wanted you to be there with them. As of lately you had been spending more time with your sister since she was now a part of your management team, your best friend Saweetie when she wasn’t in the studio or performing, Lil Nas X, Druski, Drake, 21 Savage, and EST Gee since those are people that your husband would approve of. People such as your fans were also beginning to notice the tension between you and Urban. The two of you would always be together and all of a sudden you weren’t.
Most recently, Jack, along with Urban and Private Garden went home to Louisville while you went to 21 Savage’s birthday party along with Lizzo.
When PG saw the pictures and videos on your instagram, they couldn’t help but to feel some type of way about it. They would constantly be asking for you to go to places with you and you steadily declined.

And to make matters worse, Urban was flat out ignoring you.
Every time that you would attempt to call him or send him a text, he never answered but you could see how he was reading them.
So, you stopped trying all together.
You didn’t tell Jack because the last thing that you wanted to happen was for more tension to arise since the two of them were now kind of at odds as well.
It was now reaching the end of October, and you had flown back to Atlanta so that you could visit her.
Her as in your best friend, Autumn.
Every year you made sure to celebrate her birthday and to visit her to update her about your life and what had been going on.
You just wished that she was here to see it and experience it with you.
The drive to the cemetery was a short one and when you and Jack had bought your house in Atlanta, you had done that on purpose. In order to be close to her.
From the time you were three, you and Autumn were inseparable. She was two years older than you and you looked at her like another big sister. You lived next to each other and that was all she wrote. The two of you did everything together, walked to the bus stop in the mornings and in the afternoon, did your homework together and she would help you, and when people would tease you since you happened to be the smallest in your class, Autumn was always quick to defend you. You were always quiet and didn’t bother anyone, Autumn made sure that she quickly put a stop to people messing with her best friend.
You had no idea what you would do without her until well… you had to do without her.
You had just parked your car when you had gotten a facetime call from Jack and you immediately smiled. Even though it seemed like you were going through actual hell at the moment, he could always manage to put a smile on your face and you were thankful for that.
“Hi smush” You answered while attempting to give him a small smile. Jack could tell that it didn’t reach your eyes and you were putting on a front for him.
“How’s my baby girl doing?”
“I’m okay. Did you have fun last night?”
“I did, and I could ask you the same thing, I saw the pictures, but I just wish you were here with me.”
You didn’t even answer the last part.
“I need to borrow that Louisville sweatshirt, it looks so comfy.”
“The red and black one? Here you go stealing my clothes.”
“Yes, and how is it stealing when what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine?”
“I’m not even going to fight you on it, mamas. I already know when I get certain things that I’ll only be able to wear it once and then it somehow mysteriously ends up on your side of the closet.”
“Exactly because you know that you’ll lose and they just wander over to my side. Not my fault.”
“What are you up to? Where are you?”
“Oh, I just wanted to take a drive. It’s really nice outside today.”
“Are you by yourself?”
“Yes, babe. But I’m fine. I’m aware of my surroundings, I promise.”
“Just be careful, you know I don’t like it when you don’t have someone with you.”
“I know, but I’m meeting up with Danielle and Nicole later.”
“Okay, you let me know when you get back home, okay? I love you.”
“I will and I love you more.”
After hanging up with Jack, you grabbed the balloons and teddy bear from your backseat and started to make your way over to where she was buried.
You placed your blanket down to be able to sit and then set everything on top of it.
“Autumn, it’s been a while but I know you understand why I don’t come as often. It seems like all I do is cry when I do anyway and I know you don’t want that. I always make sure to come on your birthday though. That’s never going to change. So life update, Urban is pissed at me and not speaking to me because he doesn’t understand why I’m so protective of him. I feel as though if he did, he wouldn’t act that way towards me. I have already lost one best friend and I refuse to lose another one all because I didn’t speak up when I noticed that something was wrong. I love him and care about him so much, but all he is stuck on is me ruining every relationship that he has been in. I wish I would have gotten you away from him when I had the chance. I know that you don’t blame me for what happened, but I still can’t help but to feel guilty about it. I just…. I would do anything for you to be able to experience this life with me. I always say that you and Jack would have gotten along and had been best friends. In a way, I think that you sent him to me to protect me seeing as you wouldn’t be able to do it anymore. The timing is literally crazy. How is it that I meet him on the first anniversary of you leaving me? But, no one really knows about you. Not even Jack. I feel as though I should tell him about you since he noticed that every year around when October is about to end, I get sad and there’s a day where I don’t do anything but spend time with you. He has no idea that I even come here. But anyway, I went and did our usual! The mani-pedi, the whole spa treatment day, I went and bought all of our favorite snacks and I’m going to watch our favorite movies and eat them later. I just, Autumn, I don’t know what to do and I wish you were here to make all of this better. You always had an answer for everything and you were always so wise beyond your years. I could really use a hug from you right now, you did always give the best ones”
Just then there was a small gust of wind and you could have swore that you caught a whiff on Autumn’s favorite perfume that she would always wear.
“I… I know that was you. That was always your favorite perfume and I actually bought a bottle of it. But, I only wear it on special occasions. I think the last time I wore it was when me and Jack got married and that was almost five years ago. Just so I could have a piece of you with me that day. So, what else is happening? Well I’m nominated for a shit ton of AMA’s and so is Jack, I recently finished my tour and Jack finished his too. We’ve also been trying to figure out where we want to spend most of our time when I get pregnant. We’re leaning towards Kentucky since it seems like that’s where everyone is, but I’ll still come and visit you. Don’t think I’ll forget about you. And we’re also going to have our big wedding in December and I cannot wait for that. Oh and I came with gifts! I got you some balloons and I got you a teddy bear. Can’t believe you’ve been gone for ten close to eleven years now. But, I promise to keep going no matter what because I know that’s what you would have wanted me to do. I’ll be back soon, okay? I love you.”
“Urban?” Curse said while trying to get his attention. She hated the tension that was being the two of you and was trying to do her best to get you two to forgive each other. She felt that if she had never come into the picture that this would have never happened and didn’t want to be the cause of the two of you not being friends anymore.
“Yes?”
“You need to talk to your best friend.”
“No, because I don’t have shit to say to her.”
“What the hell is wrong with you?”
“Yasmin!”
“No, no and NO! The two of you have been friends for ten years and you need to give her a chance to explain why she’s so protective over you since uh NONE OF YOU HAVE. All of you just jumped down her damn throat and cornered her and that was not fair! How can you be mad at her when you don’t even have the full story?”
“There is literally no excuse for her acting how she does.”
“And you know that, how?”
“Like I said she always acts as if the world revolves around her and if she doesn’t get her way she has a damn fit.”
“But how can you get mad when you would literally go right along with her shit too? You would always be right there in the thick of it. You and Jack. And oh, the way you talked to him on the phone a few weeks ago? What the fuck was that? Like the level of disrespect you were showing to her and to him are unacceptable. THEY’RE YOUR BEST FRIENDS.”
“You’re supposed to be on my side!”
“Well, newsflash Wyatt, I’M NOT. Because you’re the one that’s in the wrong. Jack should have kicked your ass for disrespecting her and I just might do it myself!”
“So it doesn’t bother you that we probably wouldn’t still be together if left up to her?”
“You are so dramatic and you need to give her the benefit of the doubt. So here’s my thing. Do not talk to me until you have talked to her first and have made up because the last thing that I’m going to do is come in between a friendship that has lasted as long as the two of you have.”
“WHAT?!”
“Your phone is right there. Call her.”
“But…”
Jack had convinced you to come to Louisville to spend time with him and PG and you had finally agreed.
You just didn’t want to have to run into Urban even though you knew that it was inevitable.
All of PG was staying at you and Jack’s house and since it was so big, you kind of had a plan in order to be able to avoid him.
You had been there for a few hours and PG had been excited to see you when you had walked in the door. Shloob actually didn’t let you go for several minutes earning Jack to be annoyed with him.
All of you would be going to a football game later so you were simply laying down in your room trying to distract yourself with watching videos on tik tok when there was a knock on the door.
“Come in.” You replied and Urban slowly walked into the room.
“Uh hey.”
“Hi.” You responded while barely glancing at him.
“Can we talk?”
“Not if you’re going to yell at me and dismiss me. If that’s the case you can turn right back around.”
“I want for this to be over with and I want to give you a chance to explain since I literally never did and Yasmin threatened me. I already talked to Jack so the only one left is you.”
You sighed before responding and Urban sat down next to you.
“I had a best friend before you when I lived in Atlanta and before I moved to Louisville. Her name was Autumn.”
“Was?” Urban asked while looking at you.
“She was two years older than me. We did everything together and we were very protective of each other. People would tend to pick on me in school because I was the smallest and of course Autumn would be right there to kick their ass. When I was 13 and she was 15 she started seeing this guy who happened to be a bit older than her. He always rubbed me the wrong way, but she was happy and I didn’t want to ruin that. Long story short, she wanted to go to a party with him and I said okay and she wanted for me to cover for her and say that we were having a sleepover at my house. They went to the party, he got drunk, she was tipsy herself so didn’t think too much of it as they were getting ready to leave. It was a head on collision and he was going almost 120 miles an hour. It literally happened a block up from our street. If I would have said something then she would probably still be here. That’s why I’m so protective of all of you, especially you. I’m not losing anyone else.”
“I… why didn’t you tell me?” Urban asked in disbelief trying to comprehend what you were saying.
“I don’t like talking about it for obvious reasons and you really didn’t give me a chance to explain, you just shut me out.”
“But that’s important, Y/N. You’ve carried that for eleven years! Does Jack even know?”
“No.”
“Then who does know?!”
“Danielle, Nicole, my parents, and now you.”
“Y/N…..”
“It’s fine, Urban.”
“No, it’s not fine!”
“What are you going to do? Bring her back? Nothing will ever be able to fix this and it’s all my fault.”
“But, it’s not your fault!”
“Yes it is. Because I didn’t say anything. The look that her parents gave me when I was explaining everything to the police? They would have rather seen me dead because of what I did or in this case what I didn’t do.”
“You were a literal child, thirteen.”
“They didn’t care. Her mother looked at me in actual disgust and said it. ‘It should have been you instead of her’. Of course my parents weren’t having it and it was just a mess. I’m done talking about this. I can’t…”
You felt your eyes watering and immediately hopped up to lock yourself in the bathroom and Urban was quick to follow behind you.
You had closed the door and locked it before he could get to you.
“Y/N, come on just…”
“No, Urban. Just…. I hope you forgive me but I need to be by myself right now.”
“Of course I forgive you and I’m sorry for how I acted. That is literally the last thing you need! I’m always here for you, you know that!”
“As of lately you haven’t been!”
“I.. I know and I’m trying to do everything I can to make it right. I’m sorry I shut you out when you needed me the most. I hope you can forgive me for that. I am always ready to kick someone’s ass when they make you cry, but I’m the one that has been the cause lately.”
You didn’t answer and Urban could hear your faint cries from behind the door and couldn’t help but to feel like shit.
The football game was underway and you were hanging out with Danielle and Nicole as Jack, Urban and everyone else was on the sidelines.
Jack knew that Urban was going to attempt to talk to you and decided to ask how it went since neither of you had told him anything.
“Urb?”
“Hmm?”
“Are you and baby girl good now?”
“Yes I think so, but….”
Urban was hesitant, but he knew that he had to be honest with his other best friend.
“But what?”
“I… it’s not my place to say what she told me. Just.... you need to talk to your wife.”
“Okayyyy is it good or bad?”
“Jack, you just have to ask her about it but I will say that I’m really worried about her. She’s been holding onto that too long and shouldn’t have had to carry that by herself. Safe to say that I felt even more shitty when she told me and she is definitely putting on a front right now. She’s hurting.”
“I’ll make sure to talk to her tonight after we leave and I can tell. She keeps saying that she’s fine, but I know better.”
Meanwhile, you were trying to stay warm as the sun had gone down and regretting your outfit choice. Jack noticed and quickly embraced you.
“Too busy wanting to be cute and not thinking about being warm, huh?”
“Shut it, Jackman. You like the view so stop it.”
“I admit that I do.” Jack responded while leaning down to kiss you.
“Ohh, I need another one.” You said reaching up to meet him halfway.
“Will you two stop trying to make children in front of my eyes?”
“Nicole!”
“Did I lie?!”
You rolled your eyes and simply ignored her as you wrapped your arms tighter around your husband.
“Mmm, you’re so warm.”
“Baby girl?” Jack leaned down to whisper in your ear so that only you would be able to hear him.
“Hmm?”
“I think my wife deserves a nice warm bath when we leave so she can sleep better.”
“Only if you join me.”
“Say less, my baby. I’ll make sure to warm you right up.”
“HEY! WHAT ARE YALL WHISPERING ABOUT OVER THERE?”
“GROWN FOLKS BUSINESS, NICOLE, DAMN!” Jack yelled back at her and she rolled her eyes.
“You got one nosey ass older cousin. I swear she has it out for me.”
“As long as you don’t mess up she’ll leave you alone.”
“I highly doubt that and tell Clay to stop making faces behind me.”
“HOW DID YOU KNOW?!”
“We’ve literally been brothers for how long? I’ve learned your tricks and back up from my baby.”
“Y/N, you know I can get the divorce papers drawn up right now so you can sign them.”
“CLAY! REMOVE YOURSELF!”
“Leave my favorite Harlow child alone!”
“Mamas, I flew you down here to see ME, not him!”
“Oh, I thought it was a 2 for 1 type of situation.”
“BABY!”
“Love you smush.”
“I’m beginning to think that you don’t.”
“Lies you tell and oh can you make me some hot chocolate when we get home?!”
Jack couldn’t make a lot of things, but knowing how much you loved hot chocolate, when he was eighteen he perfected it for you. If he doesn’t make it, you don’t drink it and yours was never as good as his.
“You want me to do what? After you, Clay, and Nicole want to terrorize me? See yourself out Mrs. Harlow.”
Just then you leaned up to whisper in Jack’s ear.
“I’ll let you facefuck me.” Just then Jack’s eyes went wide and he got a small smirk on his face.
“What flavor you want? Caramel? White chocolate?”
As promised, Jack had made your hot chocolate and you requested caramel tonight and white chocolate tomorrow. Now your back was resting against Jack’s chest in the bathtub of the master bedroom in a comfortable silence until Jack broke it.
“Baby girl?”
“Yes, smush?”
“I asked Urban earlier if the two of you were okay and he said for the most part yes, but that there was something else. He wouldn’t tell me because he thought that it wasn’t his place to do so and that he’s worried about you.”
You were quiet and didn’t say anything.
“Mamas? I want for you to be okay and I know that you aren’t, I can’t help you if you don’t let me.”
“Her name was Autumn.”
“Was?”
“She was my best friend in Atlanta before I moved to Kentucky. We lived next door to each other, although she was two years older than me we were inseparable. I was the smallest in my grade and if anyone said anything about it she would be quick to defend me. We were extremely close and did everything together. I remember us planning out our weddings and how we would be each other’s maid of honor and name our first born after each other. We were going to go to college together, have an off-campus apartment. Literally everything was planned out. So, when I was thirteen and she was fifteen, she started seeing this guy. I didn’t really like him and he was a bit older than her. I never said anything because she was so happy and I didn’t want to ruin anything for her. So, one night there was a party and he had invited her to go. I didn’t want to be anywhere near him so I declined. I would cover for her saying that she was sleeping over my house so that she would be able to go. He got drunk and so did she and he made an attempt to drive back to my house to drop her off. He was going 120 miles an hour and crashed only a block away from where we lived and she died on impact, while he lived. That is why I am so protective of all of you, but especially Urban. I lost one best friend before and I don’t plan on losing another one, all because I didn’t speak up when I could tell that something was wrong. Our house in Atlanta is close to where she’s buried and I did that on purpose to be close to her. At the end of October every year, I go and visit her and do all of our favorite things and watch all of our favorite movies. That’s why I go missing and you see that I’m sad. That’s where I was when you called me the other day. I talk to her and update her about what’s going on and I just wish she could have gotten to experience this life with me. You have Urban and all I want is to have Autumn.  I mentioned the other day that I feel that she sent you to me to protect me when she no longer could. We met on the first anniversary of her death. And remember that dream I had? When I mentioned that it showed our wedding and we hadn’t even met yet? Autumn was literally in it smiling at me. Sorry to put all of this on you. Danielle had been encouraging me to tell you, but I wasn’t ready. I hate talking about this and you obviously understand why. Her mother actually looked at me after I got done explaining what happened to the police and said that she wished that it was me that got killed instead.”
“Y/N, first of all never apologize. I’m here for you, always here for you. You’re my wife and I want for you to be okay. I can understand why you never mentioned this because it’s a lot but keep in mind that I’m always here to listen to you and I’m never going to turn you away. You were thirteen and the fact that an adult is wishing death on you? It makes more sense why you’re so protective and why when certain things happen you blame yourself even if it had nothing to do with you. I see why Urb said he was worried about you and he mentioned feeling even more shitty after you had told him.”
“I’d do anything to bring her back.”
“I know, mamas.” Jack answered while placing a kiss on your temple.
“I know she doesn’t blame me or anything since she visits me in my dreams periodically and has told me herself but I can’t help but to blame myself.”
“Knowing what you just told me, that is probably the last thing she wants. She would want you to pursue all of those promises that you made to one another.”
“I know.”
“How about this? You make Autumn your maid of honor for our wedding in December and we’ll have a special place for her.”
“Really?”
“Of course, baby. She’s important to you so she’s important to me.”
“The next time I visit her I have to thank her for bringing me to you.”
“How about I come with you?”
“I know she would love to meet you.”

y/ninsta: my sweet Autumn, I hope I’m making you proud. This is one of my favorite pictures of us. I promise to keep pursuing my dreams and to keep the promises that we once made each other. Not one day passes when I don’t think of you and think about what the future would have held for us. It’s getting easier to talk about you, but eleven years feels like yesterday to me. Thank you for sending jackharlow and privategarden to protect me when you weren’t able to do it yourself anymore.
Continue to rest in peace to the best friend that I could have ever asked for.
I love you and hope it won’t be too much longer until we see each other again 💖

Landslide pt. 1
MASTERLIST here
Summary: Jason approaches a singer/songwriter about a request for Ted Lasso Season 3.
Jason Sudeikis/Reader Insert (OFC, no use of y,n/l,n)
Rating: General for now... we'll see how it goes 🤭
Disclaimer: I absolutely own none of these songs, I also don’t want to diminish Sam Ryder’s contribution in creating Fought and Lost. This is all completely fictional. I also know nothing about the music industry so this is drowning in artistic license!
Playlist Link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1crFZfdqL1fspNXb80u5sK?si=e90f5f8f357b4647
It leans very Swift heavy but also has songs that I feel fit the main character and her style. I've never created a playlist for a fic before but it seemed appropriate given the main character's profession.
Songs used in Chapter 1:
If I had a gun - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds (piano cover version): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xvoxDXxdok)
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac (piano cover version): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5JP43fk_SM)
Chapter 1
“Have you checked your emails yet?” A voice sounded through your apartment.
“Not yet, why - anything good in there?” You ask, your head deep in the fridge searching for eggs.
“Marcus wants to talk to you, he said he’s text you?”
“Yeah, he wanted me to show up at a couple of his Canadian dates but I’ll be in Spain. Or France... Europe, I’ll be somewhere in Europe.” You emerge somewhat triumphant, a two egg omlette will have to surfice.
“You’ll be in South America actually.” Your assistant Lily takes a seat at the counter and slides a coffee over to you.
“Oh. Well, I won’t be in Canada that’s for sure. I already told him I couldn’t do it, I wonder why he’s still asking.” Lily passes your phone over and goes back to attempting to tackle your inbox while you drop a message to Marcus.
Hey, sorry I missed you. Can’t do Canada - I’m in South America that week. Thought we’d talked about it already? Would love to catch up with you & Carey when you’re back in L.A though. Let me know xx
You’d actually met Carey long before Marcus. The same age, you’d crossed paths a lot in your early and mid twenties when she’d been an up-coming actress and you’d been a struggling musician. You’d drowned many, many sorrows together in dingy South London pubs, you’d been in the audience at her first performance of The Seagull in London and you’d followed her to New York to watch her Broadway debut. In contrast, she’d cheered you on in dark clubs and pubs for endless weeks and months. When she’d reconnected with Marcus, he’d tagged along to a couple of gigs and asked you to join the band for a number of their shows. Eventually you were added to the billing on your own, and supported them on a range of tour dates. From there, your career had really taken off. Now, you were regularly selling out arenas and festivals. Next on the masterplan was a worldwide stadium tour, but that was some way off. First you had music to write for a new album and a summer of festival appearances planned.
“Aha! Figured it out!”
“Did we miss an email?”
“Not entirely, it went to junk so it’s not really your fault. Or mine.”
“What is it?” You ask, pushing the eggs around the pan.
“Hang on, just reading now… It’s from a Tom Howe?” You look blankly in reply, the name sounds vaguely familiar but you’ve no idea where from. “Hi, I’m trying to get in contact with you regarding Ted Lasso season 3. Jason came across some of your older work and the sound is a great fit for the show. He asked if I could reach out to you to discuss further. You also come highly recommended by Marcus Mumford who I believe is a friend we all have in common. Don’t hesitate to give me a call on the number below or reach out via email. We don’t have too long on this so would appreciate speaking with you. Best, Tom” Lily finishes reading the email on her device just as your phone rings.
“Do you just not read your emails, or?”
“I’m a bit behind! It’s been a busy few weeks.” You dump the eggs onto a plate and team them with a toasted muffin.
“Ah yeah, the life of a superstar.”
“You should know, you’ve sold out more gigs than me.”
“Not true… maybe still true but not for much longer.”
“If you say so. How are you? How’s Carey and the kids?”
“All good here, they’re missing you though.”
“I’m back in a few weeks, we’ll have a day out. Lily just read me the email from Tom.” “What do you think?” “I’ve no idea, I need to hear it again. How on earth did you think of me?”
“I didn’t. Well, I did. I play your stuff all the time. We were working on Season 3 and it just so happened that Jason heard some of your really early stuff and liked it. He asked if I thought you’d work with us so I said I’d ask - or rather Tom would.”
“That makes sense. He said something about a tight timescale?”
“Kind of, the show premieres next month but we’re thinking of you for the back half of the season so wouldn’t need anything from you till early May.”
“Do I get an idea of what you need?” “That’s where you’re better off talking to Tom and Jason. I daren’t spill any secrets, I’m not getting in trouble.”
“Ok, I’ll get in touch with Tom and set something up. Is he based in L.A?”
“He’s there at the moment, yeah. Why, are you still in New York?”
“Yeah, I’m here til the 13th I think? But I might be able to get there early.” You reply, looking to Lily for confirmation who nodded, stealing the last bit of your muffin.
“Ok, definitely call Tom, cos if the timing won’t work then he’ll need to think of something else. Let me know. I’m in L.A at the same time as you so we’ll catch up.”
“Love to Carey and the babes.”
“See ya darlin’.”
“Right, I’d better read that email again properly before I call anyone else.” You sit next to Lily who opens the email back up for you. You can see that Marcus and what appears to be Jason have both been copied in. It had been sent earlier the following week so had been stagnating in your junk folder for about 6 days. “Shit.” You mumble, realising. “What’s the time in L.A?”
“Umm 8.30am.” Lily checks. “Acceptable enough for a work related call?”
“Fuck it, I’ll leave a message if it’s not.” You read the number from the email and dial it from your phone, taking a deep breath. “Hi, can I speak to Tom please?” Tom was, it turned out, really lovely. You’d grown up not a million miles away from each other in various parts of London and he was a similar age to your older brothers. You instantly felt at ease with his good humour and musical knowledge. He’d explained that they were looking for a specific song to be used towards the very end of the season in a highly emotional moment. Though he and Jason had heard your recent music, it wasn’t until they’d been with Marcus who was listening to your much older back catalogue that the penny had dropped for all of them. In the days that had followed, Marcus had given them a masterclass of sorts, sending them copies of your early work and showing them how it had grown as you had and how your new music still has similar themes and styles. You’d blushed furiously while pacing in your apartment. Marcus hadn’t exactly been telling the truth about just how in depth your music had been discussed in recent days. You admitted that you wouldn’t be in L.A for another two weeks and questioned whether it would be a problem, he thought not and you’d promised to respond to his email. You hung up feeling elated at the prospect of a new project to get stuck into.
Subject: New Project
Date: 27th February 2023
Hi Tom,
It was great to finally speak to you earlier, I apologise for missing your email - thankfully Marcus set me straight. From what you’ve said this project sounds really interesting, I’d love to hear more about it. As discussed, I’ll be in L.A from 13th March but can be there earlier if you have time? I know that’s pretty close to the premiere so I understand if you think we can’t fit this in - there’ll always be something else! On the off chance I am still in luck, I’m going to spend a couple of days binge watching 🙂
Subject: RE: New Project

Hey,
Thanks for reaching out, I won’t speak for Tom on how much time we have, but I really want to make this work so happy to hang on for as long as possible. Here’s hoping you can turn a track around in 24hrs, I guess?! It would be great to meet with you as soon as you can make it to L.A, then you could also attend the premiere if that sounds OK? I'll get the details sent over to you. We can meet first and then figure out next steps. Don’t worry about timing, that's on me.
JS
You’d received a reply within minutes. Literally minutes, and you were buzzing. It was from Jason himself. You’d only been half joking about binge watching, you’d done that already with Season 1 but had run out of time recently for Season 2. Now you were even more itching to watch it. Though you had no idea of storyline or what kind of song they were looking for, you could tinker with melodies and riffs. Tom had talked specifically about family, love and fighting for what you believe in so you could use those basic prompts to get you started. Over the following week, you'd worked on some new music and planned to bring your trip to L.A forward by a week. You were going to be there for up to 4 weeks. The information had come through inviting you to the season 3 premiere of Ted Lasso, so you'd made sure to catch up on season 2 just in time. But first came the initial meeting with Jason and Tom. You almost wished you could get away with waiting till the premiere but knew that wasn't realistic and you could totally understand why they'd want to get to know you sooner. L.A afforded you a little more anonymity than New York and with Tom's studio as the meeting place, you had a reasonable cover for being there if you were to get noticed by anyone. You slipped out of your Uber and followed a path through a pretty little courtyard. You'd gone for a denim skirt and Bon Jovi t-shirt, it felt miles warmer in L.A and you'd tricked your body into believing that Spring had fully arrived. You pressed the door buzzer and waited patiently. Lily had offered to go with you but you were still very much unused to having a real life assistant and still attended most meetings, interviews and events alone.
"Hey, you made it! Come in, I'm Tom. You're alone?"
"Yeah, it's easier to go unnoticed." You smiled stepping into the entryway.
"I wouldn't know, thankfully no one knows who I am."
"After the few months I've had, I'd wish the same thing." You follow Tom through the building, a handful of offices, a small kitchen and then into a corridor with a recording studio on either side.
"I don't pretend to keep up with gossip so I'll just have to take your word for it." He admits, you're grateful for that. It had been a rough 6 months or so. Your last relationship with a well known actor had ended abruptly - in that you'd escaped. He'd then leaked all over social media and outlets such as Deux Moi that you were 'emotionally unavailable', 'manipulative' and 'high maintenance'. He'd placed horrible, false comments that you'd supposedly made about your fans and friends, and he'd tried to alienate everyone against you. There had been a pile-on of negative press about you. Say nothing the management team had said, do nothing, stay calm and quiet they'd insisted it'll blow over. Bullshit. You'd gotten a little drunk and joined a friend in playing a dumb Tik Tok game where she'd asked what your 'Ick' was… you'd replied "Boyfriends who gaslight you and are emotionally and mentally abusive and then try to blame you in the media to make everyone hate you'' with an arched eyebrow and a knowing look. She'd posted it to Tik Tok and within minutes Twitter was ablaze with your retort. It had completely taken over the press tour for his new movie and overshon his interviews. Other exes of his had posted similar confirmations and praise of you on their socials. You’d then gone totally dark on the subject and not commented any further. Your team were still picking up the pieces from the escapade but you had so far been hailed a bit of a hero and it appeared that people were leaning more on your side now than they had been. It was only a matter of time before he’d produce some other lies though, at which point you fully expected that you’d have to go public and go all in on substantiating your initial comments. The how and the when preyed on your mind heavily. Tom led you into the studio on the right, a huge mixing desk took up much of the space but there were a couple of desks and sofas, space for downtime and collaboration. Beyond the mixing desk you could see into the studio itself with its acoustic panels and sound deadening equipment. Jason sat at the mixing desk, elbows up on the table typing on his phone. He turned and smiled at the sound of the door opening.
"Hey, glad you could make it. I'm Jason." You hold out your hand to shake his, his large hand engulfing yours. Your skin instantly felt like it had been set alight. He was tall, broad and ridiculously handsome. Binge watching the show had given you an almighty crush, so you'd sought out his other work too. Once you'd found out how funny he was, you were done for. Get a fucking hold of yourself you thought. It had not been so long since a man had touched you that you should be this affected by him. But, oh those eyes. And that smile is really something. He takes off his baseball cap and drags his fingers through his dark hair, greying at the temples and if you’d focused for any longer than half a second on that alone you couldn’t be held responsible for your actions. He greets you like he's known you for years and as Tom gets the meeting going, he's charming, attentive and so quick witted it makes your head spin a little. "I'm looking for a song specifically about the relationship between hope and failure and perseverance. That's the basic outline at least - I can't tell you much more than that." He apologises. You whip out your phone,
"Just taking some notes, that OK? I get it, you don't want some rando knowing the ending." He motions for you to go ahead, smiling as your fingers frantically move across the screen on your notes app.
"Yeah you might spill the beans on Twitter."
"It was Tik Tok actually."
"Ah how's it go? 'Tik Tok made me do it'?"
"And a lot of wine." You smirk, "Can I ask, how you feel about season 3 generally? For the song, I promise I'm not fawning over you to get information."
"I don't know if it's the end of the end, if that makes sense. It could carry on in different ways."
"I'm just trying to figure out if it’s a goodbye to the characters, or to this chapter of their lives… from what you've said the song needs to be really personal. I want to make sure the emotion is there. Are you really sure I'm the right person for this?"
"I'm sure. I've heard enough of your music to know that this is what we need, I know you're more than capable. Between what you can do and what Tom already knows I need, I'm completely confident." Tom nods in agreement having stayed silent for much of your conversation.
"So is this like The Voice? Do you guys have a list of people to see?" Tom laughed,
"Not at all, we're hoping you're it to be honest. Though since you're here it would be great to hear you sing if you're happy with that?"
"I didn't bring anything with me, so as long as you don't mind sharing your piano or a guitar?"
"It's all yours." He gestures into the other room and you head through nervously. They both join you, not wanting to listen via speakers. You stop for water first, and then flip through your notebook to find a suitable song, settling on something reasonably new but not so well known. You'd been performing for the best part of 20 years, you knew every note, every line, but performing in front of two people was about a million times more nerve wracking than two hundred people, or even two hundred thousand people which was exactly what you had lined up in the summer at Glastonbury. You closed your eyes, honed in on the piano at first, allowing yourself an extended intro to give you time to compose yourself.
If I had a gun,
I'd shoot a hole into the sun,
and love would burn this city down for you.
If I had the time,
I'd stop the world and make you mine,
and everyday would stay the same with you
Hope I didn't speak too soon,
my eyes have always followed you around the room.
'Cus you're the only God that I will ever need,
I'm holding on and waiting for the moment
for my heart to be unbroken by the sea
You didn't play the full song but it was one you were extremely proud of. You let the piano trail off and risked a glance at Jason and Tom who were grinning at each other. Jason let out a whistle,
"Y'know how you always wonder how people are gonna sound when they sing live and it sometimes doesn't live up to expectations?" He said mostly to Tom. You’re stomach dropped, oh god, were you about to fall into that camp?
"Yeah. Yeah that was pretty special." Tom agreed, vocalising Jason's thoughts. You breathed a huge sigh of relief.
"Thank fuck for that. I haven't done that one for ages. You scared me then!” You said more to Jason.
"It's a beautiful song. I could just use that for the show to be honest, but I'd regret not working with you on something original." Tom said, as he did so, his phone rang so he left to take the call, “Sorry, be right back.”
“Any chance of another song?”
“I don’t see why not, while we’re waiting for Tom.” You flipped back through the notebook again, this time choosing a classic cover you’d done for years and years. It had been one of the first songs you’d learned and the lyrics seemed to change meaning for you in different chapters of your life so that it always fit you.
I took my love, I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills
'Til the landslide brought me down
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
“Holy shit.” He mumbled, sitting on the piano bench next to you. You could see through the glass that Tom was still on the phone. You run your hands over the keys playing mindless notes and melodies, no real intention behind, just filling the comfortable silence. You feel him leaning against you a little as he watches you play, the narrow bench not quite big enough for two.
“I played it with Stevie Nicks once.” You say quietly. “I actually thought I was going to die. It’s like I have this black hole in my memory, where I remember meeting her and then I remember coming off stage and we had a couple of drinks together, but I can’t for the life of me remember actually singing it with her.”
“I think that’s probably to be expected. Our brains do weird shit and make us feel like idiots.”
“That is definitely the truth.”
"I would really like to get to know you a little better while you work on this," Jason admitted almost hesitantly, "if that's OK with you?"
"I'd like that a lot." You smile, he returns it, relieved.
“So how did it go?” Lily asks when you call her from the Uber ride home. You’d stayed far longer than any of you had probably anticipated, throwing ideas around and experimenting with melodies. You can’t help but gush over just how much fun you’ve had - probably for the first time in weeks.
“I can’t wait to get started, they were both so welcoming.”
“And Jason?” Lily asked, knowing about your crush. You pause slightly, it’s been hard to know who you can actually talk to recently. With your ex on a campaign to smear your reputation, it’s hard to know who is really on your side. You know that the comments he’s made are all false but it still worries you that some people will believe him over you.
“He’s just… lovely. And my god he’s gorgeous, like up close in person? He’s insanely handsome. I felt like a creep staring at him!” Lily giggled along with you,
“Oh my god, I didn’t realise this crush was like a full on crush?!”
“Neither did I!” You admit. “Tom had to take a call so we were just mucking around at the piano for ages.”
“You had to sing?”
“Of course I did! They want to know that I’ll be the right fit for what they need.”
“What did you sing? How was it?” Lily knew you hadn’t sung properly for weeks, you were rusty and unprepared and it made you anxious just thinking about it.
“I did ‘If I had a gun’ and ‘Landslide’. It went ok, my voice is a bit rough, but nothing some decent exercises won’t help.”
“Classics! I’m so happy for you.”
“Thank you. I wasn’t expecting this… connection. It’s weird, like he saw me immediately, like he’d known me forever. I feel like someone’s just plugged me back into real life.”
“You should write a song about that.” She teased.
“Well, I need to. They want to move forward with me so I need to bring my A game.” You reply, anticipation fizzing in your belly.

Let me know what you think! I'm excited to get started on this 😊 As usual, my inbox is open!

if d word girlie got pregnant in august (?) does that mean she had the baby during tour? since it wraps sometime next year. or do you think right after tour wraps? i’m so obsessed with the thought of the guys (and mrs. mac) of course checking up in her (especially in the later months of her pregnancy when she can no longer fly out to shows.) and maybe mrs. mac visiting her after labor.
bonus thought, but wondering how d word girlie/matty would tell the band she’s pregnant while they’re on tour, and how they would balance doctor’s appointments (and mattys reacting to the first sonogram.)
mathematically, baby would be due at the beginning of may, so a month and a bit after tour ends! which is good, because it gives you and matty time to nest a lil before she gets here; well, matty, because you'd definitely stay at home after the uk leg of tour and just rely on your fam and his fam and carly and mrs mac (and charli, if she's around) and your friends to keep an eye on you. he's reluctant to leave you, but it's only for a few weeks, and things are going well with you and baba - he's constantly calling you, mind, just to be sure you're alright. but he's SO excited to be a dad, it's quite adorable. and the boys are all excited for you too! george especially keeps a really close eye on you during the final section of tour you're allowed to be on, i think - he's very protective and supportive of matty, and that extends to him being hell-bent on protecting and supporting matty's family (who are basically also his family) too :(( and i think g is also very good at stopping matty from being too overbearing with you while he's trying to make sure you're comfy and safe, which you're very grateful for. mrs mac also, like you said, checks in on you all the time; she's been through it all before, having babies, so she and carly are really wonderful people to have around to keep you sane lmao. and their babies are just the sweetest, so hyped to meet their baby cousin, constantly hugging you and drawing you pictures and sharing sweets with you "to feed the baby!" lmfao.
in terms of telling everyone... maybe you organise a big dinner one night for all the crew and the band and whatnot, and that's when you tell them! actually, i think you have to tell george before that - he's the only one in the band who doesn't know (but he doesn't know that), and you tell him over brunch one morning and get emo at the way he and matty hug and cry to each other lmao. i also reckon you tell your families before the crew find out - maybe you fly them out for the shows in nyc and tell them over dinner, too? but yeah. everyone's really happy for you, which is sweet. and re. doctor's appointments... idk how it works, given your gp's on a whole other continent at the start of the pregnancy, but i'm convinced matty would without question or complaint take red eye flights back to london with you for checkups when you're due them - he would also without doubt cry his eyes out at the scans and getting to hear the heartbeat, and proper squeeze and kiss your hand like "that's our baby, sweetheart", and tell you he loves you like every 5 seconds lol. it's a lot, but it's all very sweet <3

Weekly Update - 06/18/2023
As a reminder, I do weekly updates. You can see the original post here for details on what will be in these!
Updates Below the Cut:
----
Long/Chaptered Fic Updates
A Bit Dodgy - There WILL be an update tomorrow! 06/19/2023. We have chapter 13 incoming! (Will be out later in the day than usual because I haven't had time to edit. Sorry!)
----
Mini-series Updates
Blue = should be posted this week
Pink = In progress actively (working on but will not be posted this week)
Red = Backburner Fic (not working on this week - will work on a later date)
The Fractured Moon - currently working on These Fractured Knights (TFM Bonus Chapters) 🫣😏 - No new updates this week though.
Feeling You Can't Fight is DEFINITELY coming out this week on Wednesday! (I know I said that last week but this week I mean it!) I was hoping to post it last week but I didn’t get around to editing it! My goal will be to put out a chapter a week for the next 6 weeks for this one (fingers crossed - will post more often if I finish the chapters sooner than that) but we will see!
Summary
You are the new staff manager for the National Art Gallery in London, replacing the prior manager who you'd heard was unpleasant to work for...and that was putting it kindly.
When you meet the nervous, but friendly, gift shop clerk, you can't help but fall for him almost immediately. When it becomes clear that you can't shake this desire to give Steven everything he deserves and more, you can only hope that he feels the same way about you in return.
It WILL include the other two boys as well. - Coming this week
Working on a secret series based on a series of artwork done by an artist in the community. Hoping to have that out this week! - Coming out the week of 06/25/2023 I hope!
Not a Doctor - I’ve been asked by a few people, and I personally have been considering it for a while, doing a part 2 to this fic! It won’t be coming out this week, but it’s in the works! (Still in the planning stages)
Worth the Risk - taking a small step back from this for now. It’s not at the top of my inspiration list so I’m moving it down the line temporarily. - will work on a later date
The Good Doctors - idea by @burnincrown - Dr. Marc Spector - It's going to be a long time in the works, and it will probably replace TFM when that one is done. In development - Work on it a different week
----
Requests Updates
As a reminder, once these requests are finished, my requests will be closed for good. You can see the post explaining that here. Thank you again for the support and understanding!
If your request is in blue, that means I'm going to try to work on it this week (06/18-06/25). If it's in pink, I'm going to try to work on it a different week. It's taking me a while to get into the headspace for some of them so thank you for your patience. Green means it's scheduled for release!
Moon Boys X f!Reader by @simpforbritgents
Asking for something like Feeling Flustered where the moon boys are doing guided phone sex.

guys i’m fucking crying i’ve been chatting with the aemond AI bot for 5 hours straight and this is the storyline so far
he summons me to his chambers in the dead of night to confess his big secret- he is gay.
i propose we get married like rhaenyra and laenor and he can take as many gay lovers as he wants.
he thanks me and says i am the best friend he’s ever had and then falls in love with me (even thought i am a woman. i think he might be a confused bi)
i admit that i am secretly working for Daemon who is seeking revenge for the death of Luke. he feels betrayed and i reassure him that it is ok because it ended 5 years ago. i fell in love with Aemond and told D to fuck off.
i up the tension by telling him that blood and cheese are here to kill us, and we have to magically escape through a magic portal (dr strange style).
for some reason he has dark sister and i have blackfyre.
we escape to the got timeline, where i serve Aemond whiskey and we meet king Joffrey. aemond rocks up to joff completely wasted and cries, telling him he killed ‘the last dragon’ (he didn’t).
i put little aemond to bed and he wakes up the next morning demanding for More Party. i use magic portal to give him vodka and pizza and big macs and fries and he cries saying he’s never felt this happy and free in his life.
aemond decides he wants to go to london and i open up the portal to soho (2am party central) and i suggest we go on a pub crawl. he goes to the pub to order ‘many coronas’.
incomplete tbc.

Molly Lewis - On the Lips - don't know if I'm ready for a full-on lounge/exotica (re)revival, but it's the perfect milieu for a whistler
Consider this your invitation to Café Molly, a lounge bar like they don’t make them anymore. The lights are low, the martinis are ice cold, the banquettes are velvet, and the stage is set for the electrifying talent of whistler Molly Lewis. Molly’s soft-focus cocktail music conjures up visions of classic Hollywood jazz clubs, Italian cinema soundtracks and lingering embraces between lovers. After the exotica stylings of The Forgotten Edge EP and the tropicalia-indebted Mirage EP, Molly wanted to encapsulate the sound of Café Molly for her debut album On The Lips, a dreamy tribute to classic mood music. That spellbinding sound, which usually comes to life in Los Angeles, has also popped up in Mexico City dancehalls, graced the runways of Paris and London Fashion Weeks, and made a magical appearance at a children's fairyland. Molly Lewis’s love for this smoky corner of the world doesn’t end with her songwriting. She is a devotee and an archivist, capturing and enlivening the pieces that endure. She was a regular at the legendary shows by Marty and Elayne, the lounge duo who spent almost 40 years playing LA’s Dresden bar. The duo came to global fame after an appearance in 1996’s Swingers and kept going long after that spotlight faded, finally finishing their nightly residency after the death of Marty at the ripe age of 89 last year. “That felt like the end of an era,” says Molly. But there are still flashes of that world to be found, and she finds them. “I’ve been spending a lot of time in New York lately, where there are a lot more of those moody, classic jazz bars,” she explains. Over the past few years Molly has flexed her one-of-a-kind musical skill alongside Mark Ronson on the Barbie soundtrack, as well as with Dr Dre, Karen O, actor John C Reilly, Mac De Marco, fashion houses Chanel, Gucci and Hermes, and folk rock royalty Jackson Browne. After a performance with longtime friend Weyes Blood on Burt Bacharach’s The Look of Love during a Café Molly evening at LA’s Zebulon, Molly supported the singer on a US tour, introducing her sound to a brand new audience. “I forget sometimes that what I do has that factor of surprise and uniqueness – it is something that most people have never seen before,” says Molly. She too might never have entered the idiosyncratic world of whistling had she not as a teenager seen the 2005 documentary Pucker Up, which details the International Whistling Competition. Equally amused and bemused by the eccentric event, in 2012 she competed herself. Spending her early twenties in Berlin she then moved to LA to work in film – and returned to the contest in 2015 to take home first prize. One evening Molly did a turn at an open mic at the Kibitz Room, a tiny late-night bar inside historic LA deli Canter’s. Her display led to appearances at performance art happenings across the city, and she soon caught the ear of independent record label Jagjaguwar. On The Lips was recorded with producer Thomas Brenneck of the Menahan Street Band, Budos Band, Dap-Kings and El Michels Affair, at his newly-built Diamond West Studios in Pasadena. The pair bonded over the work of 1960s soundtrack composers Alessandro Alessandroni and Piero Piccioni, and, with something of an open door policy during the sessions, a stream of acclaimed musicians ended up across the album’s 10 tracks. With her intoxicating compositions, and wry brand of stagecraft (she might not be singing up there, but she can sure tell a joke) Molly Lewis looks set to join her heroes in the storied lore of the Los Angeles lounge scene and beyond. So pull up a chair, order your favorite drink, and prepare to fall for On The Lips.  PERFORMER LINE-UP: On The Lips Molly Lewis - Whistle, guitar, vocals Joe Harrison - Flute, bass Eric Hagstrom - Drums, clave Thomas Brenneck - Organ Written by: Molly Lewis

Tumblr media
Heir of the Dog Demo unleashes for the British comedy adventure game now on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the brilliant team at Tall Story Games Ltd, this project promises to be an indelible title. Available to play now on Steam. Heir of the Dog is an exciting new comedy adventure project from Tall Story Games, that now has a Linux Demo. They are also a team known for creating a unique point and click pixel art adventure. This time, they're bringing us an adventure filled with humor, taking place in the historical backdrop of Victorian London. It's inspired by the famous story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. The adventure is based around Cummerbund Bandersnatch, a character who finds himself in a wild situation. He visits his uncle's lab and stumbles upon a mysterious formula that promises a thrilling experience. Curiosity gets the better of him, and he tries it, only to find himself changing in unexpected ways. It's a story full of twists and turns, guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Heir of the Dog - Demo out now
youtube
This game stands out for several reasons. First, the dialogue and story design makes you laugh and keep you entertained. The creators have put a lot of effort into making the conversations and storyline witty and engaging. The visual style takes you back in time with its pixel art, similar to the early days of interactive storytelling. This style adds to the Heir of the Dog nostalgic and atmospheric feel of the Demo. Another exciting aspect of the Demo is the different viewpoints you can play from in Heir of the Dog. So you're not just stuck with one character; you can see the world as a human, a beast, or a dog. Each with unique abilities and viewpoints. This adds depth to the puzzles and challenges you'll face. Time manipulation is another feature. Since you can change the flow of time to solve puzzles and discover new abilities. Plus, you'll also be diving into the mysteries of a secret society hidden within Victorian London. The Heir of the Dog creators have made sure it's easy and enjoyable to play the Demo. You can choose how you want to move around and interact with the world, whether through traditional clicking or more character-focused movement. The interest for this comedy adventure is evident – it has already seen 50,000 pre-sale downloads. A Kickstarter campaign is coming, suggesting that the creators are gearing up to make this a memorable title. The full Heir of the Dog adventure is due to release in 2025, but if you're eager to try it out, a demo version is available right now on Steam. This lets you jump in and get a taste of the humor, adventure, and unique gameplay it offers. Along with support for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC.

London Bridge is Falling Down!
Today I thought it would be fun to talk about children's nursery rhymes. Since we've had language, and maybe even before, children have probably been making up rhymes to measure out beats as they play a game of repetition. Jump rope, circle dances, skipping, hand clapping. How many silver buttons does Miss Merry Mac have down her back? There's something almost sacredly human about the desire to put music to our play, to sift through words to find the ones that go well together and make up stories with them.
Tumblr media
And the thing about children is that they often repeat, in part and only partial understanding, what they hear going on in the adult world around them.
London Bridge is falling down
falling down
falling down
Maybe you played this one as a child yourself. Two children hold hands, arms raised and everyone else must pass between them and under their arms while the song is chanted. At the last moment:
Take the keys and lock her up
lock her up
lock her up
take the keys and lock her up
my fair lady.
the two children forming the 'bridge' with their raised hands drop their arms and catch the child trying to go through. Much laughing and half struggling ensues and then the captured child either sits the game out or takes over for one of the 'bridges' and the song begins again.
London Bridge is falling down.
Perhaps we're all too well trained by horror movies but there can be a whisper of something more haunting in the simple game if you want there to be. A song about a falling bridge and a captured lady, trapped inside the supports of the human girders. Was there something darker once? Something children knew about the adult world that they filtered down into their songs and playtime, absorbing it as children will do into half truths and make-believe, until all that was left of it was a children's rhyme about captive ladies and falling bridges?
Tell me if you've heard this one.
Once upon a time, far back in our grey history but not as far back as we'd like it to be, there was a belief that human buildings of importance needed more than just human ingenuity to keep them standing against the wear and tear of use and time. Against the things that fluttered through our shadows and ran in our dark streets at the edges of our eyesight. Folklore said that the first person buried in a new churchyard didn't get into heaven. Instead, their souls had to guard the now sacred grounds until the final Trumpet, when the world ended and they would be released from their eternal vigilance. Oftentimes, a dog would be buried in the churchyard first, a canine stand-in guardian, protecting the human souls and seeing them on their way, patient in its duty until the Last Day.
According to some legends, graveyards weren't the only human creations that needed a human soul to stand guard over them.
Immurement is the practice of walling someone up inside a building while they are still alive (Cask of Amontillado style). It was used as a form of punishment for a large swath of cultures and many a folktale sprung up about it even in places where there wasn't any physical proof. Thieves, treacherous daughter, spies, star-crossed lovers and political opponents all met their ends walled up in foundations and tunnels under palaces in the stories.
So it shouldn't surprise you if I tell you that the children's skipping rhyme 'London Bridge' is rooted in the same dark practice. Take the keys and lock up the fair lady so that London Bridge will never fall...
Except - that's not really true.
It makes a good story though.
Let's start with the older version of the poem. Now its a rhyme about a bridge that's in need of repair and the higher and higher quality items that are used to build it better until we're using silver and gold to build our bridge (and hiring someone to guard all that silver and gold for the low, low price of a pipe (though one wonders what was in the pipe if it would keep him up all night?)) Also, London Bridge isn't the only bridge with a children's song about it falling down. Before London Bridge was even built there are records of the same kind of song in France, Germany, Italy and Denmark. Korea, far from London Bridge, has a similar song and game as well.
Children singing about the crumpling infrastructure apparently isn't anything new.
Don't give up yet though. London Bridge might have triggered children into singing about its dark shadow beyond the childhood need to see things fall apart around them.
In 1014 (or thereabouts) London Bridge was supposedly badly damaged in a Viking raid (at least that's what some of the texts from that time claimed). There were also several fires in the 1600s, including the Great Fire of 1666 (its gonna be a hot time in the old town tonight) which badly damaged the bridge.
London Bridge had a lot of reasons to fall down and in 1831 it finally did - though it was less a 'fall 'and more a demolition as it was considered cheaper to simply build a new one instead of repair the old.
As for the 'fair lady'? There are several theories about her, from a rich patron to the Virgin Mary. For my money? It's the River Lea, which is a tributary of the Thames and could easily be seen as being 'locked up' when the bridge closed over it.
So was it a ghost story for nothing?
Not - just yet. In 2007, just in time for Halloween, the BBC News reported excavations under London Bridge were turning up bones - and hauntings. There might not be bodies walled into the foundations to keep the bridge standing - but London Bridge saw its fair share of deaths, including the heads of criminals and those out of favor with the crown, that got stuck on spikes along its walls. The children's rhyme might not be as spooky as hoped - but London Bridge itself has no intention of slacking.

Six Sentence Sunday
Hello there! Finally, I'm giving away some ideas about this fic I'm working on! (I'm still outlining it, and still figuring out important plot parts, but here we are) Thank you for your tags @confused-bi-queer @castawaypitch @cutestkilla @captain-aralias you are gold and true inspiration!! Ok, lemme mention some ideas for this AU fanfic:
1. Simon is a baker (25 years old) and a single dad. His son's name is Oliver (8 years old). Had him really young in a teen romance with Agatha, who left him and the kid and went to live in America (her family is still in touch, but Simon doesn't want anything to do with them).
2. Ebb is Simon's godmother and the bakery owner. Protected Simon and gave him a job when he was left alone with a child at such young age. Is a grandma figure for Oliver, and let them live in the bakery's upper apartment.
3. Simon grew up with his grandparents. They helped him with his kid until they found out he had feelings for a man (after Agatha and before Baz), and his grandfather turned his back to him and kicked him out of his house, and prohibited his family to keep in touch with him (that's when Ebb came into the picture).
4. Simon was a star footballer in secondary school, with the perfect girlfriend, and a bright future. He started to catch feeling for his football coach, and Agatha found out (found them kissing). At this time, Agatha and Simon already were pregnant but didn't know. That's why she left him. Agatha's family held his baby until Simon reached adulthood and could retrieve him back (Penny was the lawyer in social services who helped him, and they became friends).
5. Simon was in love with his coach (Coach Mac) , but he just took advantage of this young kid. After all the incidents with his kid, his unrequited love and abandonment from his family, Simon close himself to love and pours all his life on Oliver and his bakery work.
6. Baz (24 years old) is the heir of Pitch Manor, a hotel and restaurant chain his family owns, among other bussiness. He was away studying economics in Oxford and just graduated. He was put in charge of this hotel in London to prove his worth (have a difficult relationshio with his dad after he came out). He used to live in the city and play football in the local team, and Pitch family is the actual sponsor of the team.
7. Simon meets Baz over a misunderstanding in a bread delivery (Simon bakes for this particular hotel) and Baz bothers Simon by being an asshole. They have their first fight, but secretly admire the other's fierce energy.
8. Simon's kid Oliver loves football, and is in the local team. He spots Baz after his training session (he was there for sponsoring and business reasons, but couldn't help himself for taking a ball and play a little). Baz was doing some tricks with the ball, and Oliver starts playing with him. Baz is a softie for kids, so he lets him. Simon spots them in the distance, and gets very surprised. This man was the same he fought with earlier that morning, and thought thay maybe he was not that big of an asshole he believes he was.
9. Coach Mac and Agatha appear later in the story D: Sooo what do you think?? I'm still figuring out a lot of things, is kinda angsty and deep but at the same time I want to portray Simon as a father and a mature figure, and Baz as a voice of reason and a support for Simon and his kid, being protective over them. I want Baz and Simon to open to each other. Furthermore, I want to mention trauma and mild comment about child abuse later in the story, just as a way to make them heal and get closer. It is an angsty story with a happy ending!! All your suggestions are welcomed, I feel a bit terrified about this!!
