Personal Thoughts:

I really like this one. Time travel is my favorite trope. It’s well written, it draws you in, and the author has done an excellent job of mashing up Legends and Canon in fun and unique ways.

It has everything: Force Sensitive Omega, Tired Space Dad Din Djarin accidentally becoming a main character, Ezra and Anakin as chaotic besties, no Jedi bashing, and much more that would be spoilers.

The author tries to update twice a month. It’s really good. Also this is the only one I’m including the summary for because I’m lazy.

Her grandmother (Grandma Mira) and her two cousins (Peli Moto and Beru Whitesun ) both helped her out a ton. She is admired and Skywalker is a name very well known in medical circles.

She decided to became a heart surgeon when her own mother (insert name here) died from a heart issue that no one wanted to touch surgically. Anakin was 9 years old. Anakin has his mom up on a pedestal - she is perfect and smart, the best surgeon, the best mom, she’s done it all. Anakin feels the pressure to be just as good as his mom. People expect him to be just as brilliant and successful as his mother. He expects it from himself. Shmi just wants him to be happy. Anakin is ready to start his residency at 25. His mother is in line to be chief of surgery at the hospital she works at (Twin Suns Medical Center). Its considered the hospital to intern at if you want your specialty to be heart surgery. Anakin isn’t really sure what he wants to specialize in, and he doesn’t want people to say that he got it easy during his internship. So he goes to the next best thing (it’s actually the number one hospital overall in the country but to Anakin is second to the hospital where shmi works because Shmi works there). He goes to Jedi Coruscant General Hospital. Ferus Olin and Anakin make nice and turn out to be pretty decent friends. Then. Anakin realizes that Padme had kids, with him. The twins. And never told him. 🤯. That’s smoothed over. He’s a dad now. He loves it. Obi-Wan’a supportive. Their secret relationship is starting to not be so secret anymore. Then. obi-wan’s ex wife (Satine Kryze) pop in with a kid. obi-wan’s kid. Obi-Wan never told him that he’d been married or that he had a kid. They break up. Anakin thinks about quitting. Then about transferring. Then gets side tracked because Aunt Beru (his mom’s cousin) got married and her husband’s dad was in a bad car crash. Its all hands on deck to save his life. Shmi makes an appearance at the hospital and Obi-Wan realizes that Anakin is Shmi’s son 🤯 Owen’s dad makes it. Anakin and Obi-Wan make up. Their relationship is outted but everything works out. There’s other small and big dramas but thats pretty much it lol

Anakin is sort of a dead beat father for being fully capable of communicating post-death and he's choosing to train Ahsoka instead of Luke :) meanwhile Luke :) is all alone with R2 rebuilding the Jedi without any guidance (that we know of)

We don't know if Obi-Wan is still speaking to him :) or Yoda :) or Mace Windu :) even fucking Qui-Gon Jinn would be a good contender to be consulting Luke on how to rebuild.

But you know what's even fucking crazy?

Ahsoka doesn't even need to be a Jedi again if she doesn't want to. She just needs to be available and nearby for Luke for whenever he has a question :) which she chose not to be :)

But back to Anakin. Isn't it crazy that both of his kids are alive and well and he has the ability to become full body apparition and he's choosing to not be with his kids :)

Wow :) he doesn't even tell Ahsoka "hey btw now that we have that sorted out I need you to help go help Luke" nope :) none of that :)

AND THEN AHSOKA meets Luke for the first time (btw did y'all wanna see how they met? Well fuck you you won't get to see their first conversation) and we can assume they share stories. So now Luke knows about who his dad was from a non-vague perspective (thanks Obi) and Ahsoka now knows that Anakin has two adult kids :) and she :) the woman who is soooo traumatized by her master and had a deep emotional bond with. Is choosing :) to not be with them

Weird right? Your mentor that was with you during a big emotional part of your life and you find out his blood continues. Very weird you wouldn't voluntarily be there with them. You don't even have to be that active in their lives. The least you could do is offer to drive Kylo Ren to soccer practice or give Leia some pictures and video footage of her birth parents and her would-be adoptive parents from the Republic era.

Rebels Rewatch: "Homecoming"

Hera's daddy issues, and lots of fanservice for TCW fans.

Oh hey, one of my husband's favorite episodes!

Three guesses as to why.

Yep it's because of the Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carrier.

Anyway, the need for such a thing is demonstrated right with this opening scene, with an ill-fated A-wing getting blown up as it tries to dock.

The A-wings get a raw deal in this show, seems like any time they need a fighter to blow up they do an A-wing.

You know by now Hera's started to get to know the pilots under her command, so every loss is a little bit more personal now.

Kanan being silently supportive as Hera goes to call home.

Cham appears and cue TCW fans freaking out.

Not sure why we forwent the fanfare this episode, I don't think the circumstances are quite serious enough for it.

Kanan acting all cutely nervous to be meeting Hera's father kjhkjds.

And him getting everyone's names wrong lol, look at their faces. They're all just like, "Dad. Dad, that's not my name."

Numa introduced and though I have only seen the episode where she appears once I understand TCW fandom's base instinct to sob uncontrollably at how big she's gotten.

Cham being all, "NO I won't let you have this carrier I have to BLOW IT UP as a SYMBOL of RYLOTH RESISTANCE!" is absolutely annoying, Sato and Hera are saints for putting up with it.

I love the immediate cut to Ezra helping Hera tune Chopper up, implying he did his whole "follow you out of concern" routine and got invited to stay. :)

This is becoming a familiar sight isn't it? Ezra's role as heart of the team, peacemaker, counselor, and "bridge" is particularly emphasized this season. Not surprising, we collect most of our finale-important assets and allies this season.

Hngh that vulnerable little, "More important than family?" Fandom sometimes like to portray Mira and Ephraim as workaholics who had no time for Ezra between their broadcasts and resistance but this little line here, that Ezra would be so quietly horrified at the idea of rebellion being more important than one's own family, suggests otherwise.

Also! "Well, there's nothing more important to me." Throw that shade baby boy, love you for it.

Hhhmgngnll shut uuuuuuuuup Cham. When Ezra was preoccupied with concern over his homeworld he wasn't nearly so obnoxious. And, you know, actually accepted that other people and other worlds need help too.

Hera's absolutely sour sulk face. XD

This whole scene really, Gobi teasing Hera about "your Jedi", Kanan gushing about Cham, Hera cutting her father off with the doors twice.

It has all the vibes of "surly adult daughter reluctantly visiting estranged home to show off the grandkids and being annoyed that husband and dad get along so well".

Kanan's fake accent here is kind of amazing.

Hera's devotion to authenticity dislodges and reveals the supply of grenades in Numa's sack. Honestly, Cham reminds me a little bit of Saw with how obsessive he is about his own personal cause. He and Saw are both fighting for a good reason, true, but their attachments--Cham to Ryloth's freedom in particular, Saw to being right about the Death Star stopping the Empire from inflicting more loss at all costs--have blinded them, made them single-minded and selfish, hostile to others and uncaring about their plight.

Ezra, on the other hand, though he's always very worried for his world, his people, still is able to put them aside in order to do things for the wider cause, still able to access his compassion for people outside of his immediate circle.

(This would take a brief backslide in Season 3 after Malachor but come back with internal character development at the beginning of Season 4.)

Lol I knew as soon as that mouse droid got trapped that it would be used later.

Synchronized Force Push FTW.

And I love this moment where they throw each other forward, it's so awesome. Been a while since we've heard the Main Titles theme used to denote heroism too.

Ezra bouncing excitedly once he pulls off the Mind Trick, like Kanan knew he could aww.

Hera's double-take lol.

"I must destroy this ship for Ryloth!" Oh take a chill pill.

This is another case of, "Wow, that's a fast turnaround." but it's way less egregious than Ketsu's turn, since there are multiple other voices chiming in in support of Hera after her speech and all Cham does is take a step back and let Hera have the floor, he doesn't actually help until later.

Sounds like a muted version of the TIE Fighter Attack track here.

Right, so, this moment is touching and all but pulling harder on the yoke wouldn't actually do anything, this is orbit not atmosphere.

Imperial theme here, and then a snippet of "Shenanigans".

Ezra has an idea! Bet Sabine loves it because it involves blowing stuff up lol.

Love the teamwork here with this moment.

Eyyyyy everyone wins! The Rebels get the carrier, Cham gets his symbolic firey ship explosion of justice, way to go Ezra, that was a good idea, nice "bridging".

An almost Stargate-esque cue here (no surprise, Kiner worked on Stargate SG-1) which... it's not Hera's theme I don't think, at least I can't find another occurrence in "Wings of the Master". Cham's maybe? It definitely sounds like a leitmotif.

Aaaaaand a nice moneyshot of our spacefamily.

Another quality Hera-focused episode, expanding on her backstory without contradicting what we already knew. (Which I've already talked about was a bit of a problem with Sabine and "Blood Sisters".) Hera doesn't really develop much but then, again, she never really needed to. Still nice to see her reconcile with her father.

Another variation on the Friendship Fetch Quest--though Cham reappears later he's not a crucial asset to the finale like the other allies we gain this season, and once more the most important gain this episode is a ship. That Quasar carrier is going become a familiar marker and staple of the Phoenix Cell and we're going to get very used to seeing it in establishing shots... which makes the great big hero moment in "Zero Hour" it gets hurt a LOT more.

Honestly it's worth watching just for how seamlessly synchronized Kanan and Ezra are getting in combat. :)

character bashing in sw fics is so funny to me bc it's always like... "well my blorbo may have commited war crimes BUT AT LEAST HE WASN'T A BAD JEDI DAD" (i've been reading a lot of qui-gon stuff and it is rough out there... people always complain about qui-gon leaving obi-wan on a war-torn planet with child soldiers but they never ask themselves if obi-wan had bad vibes or was unpleasant to be around). u r literally writing about star wars characters. every one of them sucks. it's part of loving star wars is to accept all your favorite characters are horrible except maybe like... grogu. grow up.

Excuse you, Grogu ate that frog lady's eggs which is clearly worse than any warcrime.

No but seriously the shit Qui-Gon gets just perplexes me. There is so much good stuff to dig into with his character and instead people just skip right over that and go straight for the bashing. He can be such a compelling character!

Even just excluding the Jude Watson books and just going of canon, there's so much.

Like, just the implications of being trained by Dooku, the kind of childhood that would have been, and thinking about the reasons Dooku had for joining the Sith. That was his father figure, that was what he grew up in the shadow of! Makes me insane to think about the kind of person that would create!

Or the reverse, the kind of person Qui-Gon would have to be to shape the Obi-Wan we know.

Like, just the things you can fill in this character with from the negative space around him.

If you want to make Qui-Gon into a bad dude you're gonna have to try harder to sell me on it lmao.

Another character that gets bashed on so much is Mace Windu and like, I'm not going to touch on the racism present in that but like. He can be an antagonist in the narrative without being written as an outright dick, you know? His character works really well as a source of conflict in a story but you gotta put the work in to make it make sense for who he is and his motivations instead of just making him shitty for shitty sake. I hate how often fandom puts Mace in stuff and makes him 'guy who is a dick to Anakin for no reason' instead of making him a complex and compelling character with honestly pretty valid reasons for his tension with Anakin. (also i hc that just being around Anakin gives Mace shatter-point induced migraines so Mace can't help but be a little snappish anytime he's near Anakin for more than 2.5 seconds. But because Anakin's brain is a traumatized rat on a wheel spinning round and round in a self destructive spiral, he takes Mace bitching at him as a sign that Mace hates his very existence when really it's like Mace looks at Anakin adn thinks: that motherfucker (affectionate))

16: Hamilton/Community Theater Au. In this (modern) au, Mace Windu owns a theather in his town, and directs most of the plays that are put on there. The one that inspired this au was Hamilton, hence the name of the AU. Kanan is in a lot of the plays, and Hera gets recruited to play Eliza in Hamilton (and Kanan falls head over heels in love, as you do)

23: Locksmith/Fencing Au. I came up with this one to try and figure out a creative interpretation of fix it in last year's Kanera Week-- basically Kanan is a handy man and helps Hera break back into her house, and also flirts with her like there's no tomorrow. It's called the Fencing Au because Ezra is in the fencing club in his school, which Kanan also has a little experience with. 65: Meet The Robinsons/Time Travel Au. I've had ideas for an au of this sort pretty much every time I watch Meet The Robinsons, but I finally solidified it recently. If you've watched Meet The Robinsons, you know what to expect with the ficlet I'm gonna post beneath the cut. If not... watch that movie. It's so good. And you'll like the ficlet nonetheless!

Jacen had found himself in a lot of absurd shenanigans in his time, but this? This was something else entirely. 

He really should have known better than to go through a Force portal just because one of his friends dared him to, and he really should have known better than to linger as long as he did once he found out he was in the past. But he’d been curious, especially once he realized who he was watching.

But now? Now he was going to be in so much trouble if he got caught.

“Follow me,” he told his companion as they slipped into the large garage of the house he’d lived in since he was nine and the war ended. 

“Why are we going into your garage?” the young man asked, and Jacen risked a glance at him. And by him, he meant the six foot two figure of twenty year old Kanan Jarrus, studying him with narrowed blue-green eyes that Jacen had seen a hundred times before in the mirror.

Turns out the holofilms weren’t exaggerating. When you time traveled, things always got complicated. Jacen hadn’t even begun to explain who he was to Kanan, let alone the future he’d brought him to.

“We’re hiding you from my family until I can get you back to your time,” Jacen explained. “If we’re lucky, no one will be down here. My mom’s out of town, and she’s the one who comes down here the most.”

They were not lucky. Five minutes after they’d arrived— right in the middle of them going through all the books Jacen had on Force portals, which were very few— the door leading into the house swung open.

“There you are, Jacen,” came the cheerful voice of Ezra Bridger, and Jacen froze.

“We’re in trouble, aren’t we?” Kanan whispered.

“You have no idea,” Jacen whispered back. Slowly, he turned to face his master, who was strolling into the garage. He hadn’t noticed the younger version of his master— yet.

“Zeb and Sabine are about finished with dinner,” Ezra told him. “And your mom called earlier. I told her you were out with friends and would call her back later— why are you looking at me like that?”

Biting his lip, Jacen said, “I need to tell you something, and I need you not to freak out.”

“Why would I freak…” his voice trailed off as Ezra’s eyes locked on Kanan, who offered a sheepish grin.

“Hi,” he said. “I’m Kanan.”

Ezra let out what could only be described as a shriek of horror and scrambled backwards. Kanan blinked, looking surprised as Jacen started digging through the drawers of the nearby tool bench. Ezra’s screaming was going to attract attention, and for that, they needed to disguise the younger version of his dad.

“That was… unexpected,” Kanan was saying as Jacen grabbed him by the arm, spun him around, and shoved a large pair of sunglasses over his eyes. Next came a baseball cap, hiding his ponytail. Better than nothing, Jacen thought.

Kanan just stood there for a moment, then said, “As was that. Dare I ask?”

“We can’t let anyone else find out you’re from the past— Ezra, calm down,” Jacen told his master, who was still gaping.

“I have so many questions,” Ezra said, his eyes wide. “How? Why? Where? What? Who? When— I guess that’s all of them.”

Rolling his eyes, Jacen said, “Now’s not the time to panic. Now is the time to figure out how to get him back to his time, and make sure Mom and Dad and everyone else don’t find out about it. Deal?”

“I’m gonna require explanations later,” Ezra said slowly. “But deal. We just have to keep him away from the others.”

“Right, which means you’re gonna have to stay down here—” Jacen turned to Kanan again. Or rather, where Kanan had been. The younger version of his dad was gone.

“Oh, we’re so screwed,” Ezra muttered.

Excerpt from me and my parents after we started rewatching Rebels like two hours ago to prepare for Ahsoka

Mom (not super into Star Wars but watches it with me and dad cause it makes for good family time, hasn't seen Rebels until now): So for some reason I always assumed Ezra and, uh-

Me: Kanan.

Mom: Yeah, for some reason I thought Ezra and Kanan were brothers.

Me and Dad simultaneously: No.

Dad (casual fan who follows along better than mom but isn't hardcore like me, has watched Rebels with me twice before now): Yeah Kanan-how old was he again? During Order 66?

Me: 14.

Dad: And he was a Padawan?

Me: Right.

Dad: So he's younger than Ahsoka right?

Me: Yeah she was 17 at the time.

Dad: And who was his master again?

Me: Depa Billaba. And Mace Windu was her master. She was the one who was in the first episode of Bad Batch.

Dad: Right right. And then you said Ezra was born on...?

Me: Empire Day. When Palpatine made the big speech and declared himself emperor in the movie.

Dad: Right yeah. And then Luke and Leia...?

Me: Were born two days later. According to Pablo Hidalgo.

Dad: Right I remember now.

*solid five seconds of silence*

Dad: You got all that honey?

Mom (has just been looking at her phone while we were rambling for the past minute): Sure.

Grogu hated missing people. He missed his friends from the Jedi Temple. He missed his masters as well. He even missed the librarian who pinched his cheeks. He missed Kelleran Beq. He missed Obi-Wan Kenobi. He missed Mace Windu. 

He’d missed those people for a very long time. They’d been gone for more than half his life in most cases. While he was hidden from the Empire and the Inquisitors and the Emperor himself, Grogu still managed to meet people who were kind and helpful and gone. He was at least as missing from their lives, if they still lived them, as they were from his. 

He wondered if they missed him too? Did they smile to themselves when they thought about washing his coverall, only to discover that he’s pockets were filled with snacks and little stones that he picked up to remember the people and places he visited? Did they laugh to themselves when they remembered the first time they saw him eat a critter whole? Did they cry when they thought he must have surely been captured and killed like so many other good people they knew?

He tried not to think about them at all because he really didn’t like going from smiling to laughing to crying. He knew that nothing he could do now would change anything that happened then and that just made him angry and then sad and then very, very quiet. When his dad gave him a strange look because he didn’t understand what Grogu was babbling about, some of the time it was because he was missing those old friends and he just had to run through all the emotions as quickly as he could or he’d just be hugging Din Djarin and weeping on his shoulder. Grogu didn’t want to do that more than once a day and he preferred that time was reserved for asking for more food or a toy…something that would make him happy, rather than sad. 

But today was different. Today was a day he couldn’t help but miss people. Today was the 563rd anniversary of the day first Kuiil and then IG-11 left them. Grogu counted everyday since they parted as an anniversary and that was also one of the many reasons he didn’t like missing people. He couldn’t not think of them every day. He couldn’t not hear their voices or see their actions. 

IG-11 had said and done so many things. It certainly helped that since IG-11 was a droid, it was capable of doing more things per second that a human or an Ugnaught or a Grogu. Offering them tea. Helping them pack up the Razor Crest. Improving the functionality of the carbonite chamber even if they never got a chance to use it. Pointing out that the blurrgs would travel better if they were frozen. Taking Kuiil’s refusal to do that in good humor. Helping them unpack the Razor Crest. Cleaning up after the blurrgs. It had all been memorable. 

Grogu was really glad that IG-11 had rescued him from those Imps on Nevarro. And although he hated to admit it to himself, he had approved of the way the former assassin droid had done it as well. IG had tried being polite and pointing out the issues that required resolution. The Imps couldn’t claim that they hadn’t been warned. They had been. And when they refused to back down and just hand Grogu over, well the re-programmed assassin droid did just what you might it expect it to do. 

And that apology. It was priceless. 

“That was unpleasant. I’m sorry you had to see that.” 

Grogu wasn’t sorry at all and he didn’t find it the least bit unpleasant. If he’d been able to kick sand at those two Imps or snap out a curse or to quote Ian, saying ‘Bet you didn’t see that coming’ and then laugh, he absolutely would have. 

He knew what those two Imps had done to Kuiil and what they had done to him and all IG-11 had done was show them that it wasn’t nice to hurt people. They just got a very first hand experience of why that wasn’t nice. Some people really needed percussive instruction. At least that’s what Cara Dune told him.

Sadly, recalling that Cara was off doing some sort of secret mission thing for the New Republic just gave Grogu another person to miss. It was different missing a person you knew would be okay no matter what versus missing people who were really gone. Grogu would take one over the other any day. He could always ask his dad, the Mandalorian, to send Cara a vid of them waving and wishing her well. 

He couldn’t do that with Kuiil and he couldn’t imagine what would have to happen for Din Djarin to find another IG unit and train it to be their companion. They’d probably have to travel to Mandalore and find a mythosaur and fight the Imps all over again. Grogu began to giggle. 

What were the odds of that happening? 

It would take an IG-11 to calculate them, giving Grogu another reason to miss him. Dank Farrik!

So yeah, Anakin Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Mace Windu are the characters that got me into Star Wars in the first place; when I was a kid, I had actually watched my dad look at Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Granted, I thought the movie and it's politics were boring at the time but:

Kid!Anakin stuck out to me. Them working to free him made it known that he was important in the long run and I recognized that and was interested to see why these fighting monk-dudes with glowing sticks found a KID (just like me!) interesting.

Qui-Gon was specified as a Jedi Master so I was like "this guy has to be impressive moving the fighting monk dudes with glowing sticks" and I actually thought he was Obi-Wan's dad. So I felt him when I watched Maul kill him. Also, he helped Jar Jar despite not finding him annoying and tried to mind trick Shmi out of slavery.

Mace Windu; I recognized Samuel Jackson and Mace looked super important for the fighting monk-dudes with glowing sticks. I proceeded to look him up and I WAS SO HAPPY as a black kid that he was a character on the GOOD side who was POWERFUL and a LEADER. I had no problems pretending to be Mace Windu for that simple point alone.

From that point on, I had looked up and watch the original triogy and the third movie had/was coming out so I waited a bit to watch that on Starz years later.
