You: "MAL SAID IT!!! THE LINE!!! ABOUT ALINA BEING HIS FLAG AND NATION!!!"
ME: ok YES... but what about when she uses the Cut to make her first kill and Mal not only comforts her, but assures her she's not becoming a monster??? What about when Mal recognizes she's become a strong leader who can fix their nation, luminous and powerful and meant for more than he could have ever dreamt... meant for more than he has to offer her???
“You saved my life today,” he said. I shrugged. “And you saved mine. It’s kind of what we do.” “I know it isn’t easy, making your first kill.” “I’ve been responsible for a lot of deaths. This shouldn’t be any different.” “But it is.” --- [...] I hesitated. I couldn’t look at him when I whispered, “It felt good.” He didn’t say anything, so I plunged on. “It doesn’t matter why I’m using the Cut, what I’m doing with the power. It always feels good.” I was afraid to look at him, afraid of the disgust I’d see on his face or, worse, the fear. But when I forced myself to glance up, Mal’s expression was thoughtful. “You could have struck down the Apparat and all his Priestguards, but you didn’t.” “I wanted to.” “But you didn’t. You’ve had plenty of opportunities to be brutal, to be cruel. You’ve never taken them.” “Not yet. The firebird—” He shook his head. “The firebird won’t change who you are [...]" Then his expression sobered. “You’ll still be the girl who was willing to sacrifice her life to save us at the Little Palace, the same girl I just saw back a servant over a king.” --- [...] “There’s something wrong with this country. No land. No life. Just a uniform and a gun. That’s how I used to think too.” He had. He’d been willing to walk away from Ravka without a second glance. “What changed?” “You. I saw it that night in the chapel. If I hadn’t been so scared, I could have seen it before.” I thought of the militiaman’s body falling in pieces. “Maybe you were right to be scared of me.” “I wasn’t afraid of you, Alina. I was afraid of losing you. The girl you were becoming didn’t need me anymore, but she’s who you were always meant to be.” “Power hungry? Ruthless?” “Strong.” He looked away. “Luminous. And maybe a little ruthless too. That’s what it takes to rule. Ravka is broken, Alina. I think it always has been. The girl I saw in the chapel could change that.”
^^^ADD THIS SCENE TO THE "YOU'RE MY FLAG. YOU'RE MY NATION." LINE, AND THIS IS LITERALLY MAL DEVOTING HIS WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE TO SERVING ALINA AT ANY COST.
ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW IT PARALLELS THE WAY ALINA FEELS ABOUT MAL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SERIES!!!!! SHE THINKS HE IS OUT OF HER LEAGUE AND WOULD NEVER CHOOSE HER ROMANTICALLY WHEN HE COULD PICK ANYONE. SHE'S THE ONE THINKING MAL WILL OUTGROW HIS CHILDHOOD BESTIE AND GO ON TO GREATER THINGS..... AND NOW MAL FEELS THE SAME WAY!!!! PARALLELS!!!!

So... thoughts about sab season 2 lmao
The writers were obviously on acids while concocting this high drivel.
It's a new fantasy genre they just founded with this season, you know, High Drivel.
They completely butchered the Darkling's character and I had to painfully witness ten hours of Ben, completely conscious of it, trying to conjure every Beauty and the Beast refrain to delay the Titanic-like sinking of his character and ship (from Phantom and Love Never Dies, to Dracula and Frankenstein to literal fanfictions I'm now sure he reads).
They completely missed the entire point and meaning of Darklina, making it a one-sided, one-dimensional stalker/simp-victim with angry Stokolm syndrome dynamic.
They threw famous line after famous line at us completely out of context as if they were bones to bait rabid dogs with (I will never forgive how they turned the sardonic "I'll make sure you hear when I make her scream", elegant half-threat and half-innuendo, into an angry madman growl with no meaning whatsoever).
"Let me be your monster!" - my children, you have read too many fanfics and not even the good ones.
Don't get me started with Baghra, the relationship counsellor and motherly hero (tm).
The shameless way they painted Aleksander taking possession of the stag amplifier as an assault metaphor. Disgusting.
I honestly didn't believe possible to do worse than the actual books, but never say never! The reasons why I hated the books were magnified this season. If Alina's reasoning and idiocy and lack of interest in her destiny and counterpart just did not make any sense in the books, in the show she is a thousand times dumber and one-dimensional! Put against this new version, books!Alina was depth personified! And if the books felt like rushed unelaborated summaries, the show is now an even worse mess! I cannot believe those are the same people who created season one. I'm astonished.
They eradicated the entirety of canon Darklina's scenes. Not a single one was present. Not one.
The tether is now for everyone to use and abuse, not only a personal soulmate thing. The Darkling is in Mal's dreams too lmao
Merzost suddenly killing the Darkling, of course. Obviously not to make Alina appear less of a cold-blooded murderer, not at all. Perhaps they should have remembered to make her fake a tear or two while burning the corpse of her ex-lover looking like a dumb emotionless fish.
Genya reduced to the victim (tm).
Nikolai the good woke boy (tm).
Nikolai giving up the Sturmhond title to the first tracker he meets, of course.
I loved how after ten hours of soppy eternal love declarations Mal dumps Alina because their love isn't real lol epic stuff.
And by the way this is still considered more valid and important than the relationship with the poor bastard who actually allowed the dumb angry fish to end him while daydreaming about her, his only peace in a thousand lifetimes of war.
Alina turning dark gives me a feeble hope, but the writers should come down from whatever drug they are currently using first.
Said hope involves the fact that they extinguished both Malina and the hatred towards the Darkling this season, and I like to think they did that to give us the proper dynamic with dark!Alina and the Nikolai's duology resurrected Darkling. But who knows if they will see reason.

Now that you finished s2, do you want to share your thoughts about sweet pathetic Aleks and sweet pathetic Alina? In s1 I didn't care much about her, honestly, she didn't have the dephs I normally like in protagonist (for me to like) and I was genuilly worried about this season, but well. You saw, Hilary. I love it, what they did with her (and Aleks, and, for that matter, Alina and her relastionship with Mal)
Honestly, I am a huge fan of what they did with Darklina this season, and all the complaints about it deeply, deeply baffle me. Like... y'all realize that in the books, she kills the Darkling, gives up her power, and goes to live with Mal on a farm in obscurity, right? We all bitched about it, and we were all dreading s2 because of that whole mess and it not being what anyone wanted. I was obviously very skeptical about how the season overall and especially the Alina/Mal/Aleksander part was going to be handled. Because in the books, Alina is not very interesting, Malina is not very interesting but still automatically promoted to endgame, and none of that is really challenged or deconstructed at all. I wasn't sure how bold the writers were going to be about changing it up, whether they were going to play the book arcs fairly straight, or what. And they did NONE of that. Yes, she still killed him, but after we literally had a flashback of them kissing the first time and him stating that was when he truly felt peace! He dies gazing at her adoringly and calling her "my little saint!" Like! This was not them "minimizing Darklina" or whatever!
I know that fandom is gonna fandom, and also that fandom tends to insist that they like complicated female characters in theory and then turn on them the instant they're actually complicated, but Alina is SO much more interesting and nuanced in the show that she is in the book, Jessie Mei Li does a great job with her, and the chemistry with Ben Barnes, even and especially when they want to kill each other, is hnnnnngh. Like, again! The writers went "hey twisted soulmate bullshit!" at us at every opportunity! They broke up Malina and sent Mal off to develop an actual personality and plot purpose, and the show acknowledged multiple times in-text that the relationship is weird and codependent and possibly influenced by him literally being her magical footstool! They didn't just go "well they should get married now and Alina will give up her power and live Happily Ever After in obscurity!" Instead, they made it all much more complicated, they made Mal likeable instead of a jealous dickhead but still admitting he's outclassed, they had Alina choose Nikolai and power, they set up an arc of Alina trying to be the "good Grisha" and the "good queen" and discovering that it's SO much harder than just being able to summon light, and crucially, repeating every one of Aleksander's mistakes/being drawn into his character arc exactly as he predicted. So what happens next? We don't know, but we can bet there will be more Parallels.
Basically, the writing this season for Darklina was a lot smarter and a lot more challenging/subversive of the source material than I ever expected it to be, and I eat it up. AND THEY ENDED IT WITH ALINA LITERALLY USING THE SHADOW CUT, Y'ALL!! LIKE. LIKE!!!! SHE CLEARLY ENJOYED DOING IT BECAUSE YET AGAIN, TWISTED SOULMATE BULLSHIT!!! I AM STILL VERY MUCH INTERNALLY SCREAMING ABOUT THIS!
It seems as if there are some segments of the fandom who only like Alina in theory, as long as she doesn't do anything to "challenge" or push back against Aleksander, and like. Guys. That's their whole arc. That is the whole dynamic in a nutshell, and that's what makes it interesting. Enemies-lovers-enemies-lovers, inextricably bound up even as they hurt each other and deny each other and try to push each other away. They always end up coming back to each other, because as the show and the characters themselves keep telling us, they are each other's only equal in the world! Not mention, the show has cleared WAY more space for that to be explored in an actually meaningful way than the books ever did, and I for one am very here for it. It's My Jam to a truly embarrassing degree.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 is Malina’s (and the crows, of course) season. Sorry to the haters but there’s nothing you can say to convince me they aren’t soulmates. Also, Mal looks so hot in his blue guardian uniform.

i have to ask about malarklina of course
The Darkling wants to be apart of Mal and Alina's relationship so bad and it is objectively hilarious. He clearly read the letters between them and he fondly remembers being stabbed with a knife that is a combination of both Mal and Alina. Also I hate to be the one to say this but the inherent marriage symbolism of tying hands combined with the fact that he stabs them both through the hands while they're holding hands to give him life is 👀👀👀
The Darkling's possessive ass saying my summoner and my tracker like that doesn't sound absolutely fucking insane to literally everybody around him. He has a vested interest in both Alina and Mal emotionally as well as tactically. He's possessive of them both and keeps tabs on them both.
The soulmate symbolism between both malina and darklina is something I've talked about a lot, but the best thing about it all in my mind is that malina's connection is largely physical and darklina's connection is largely spiritual/existential. Both of which, when separate, lack something crucial. I also think that the balance that should be between Alina and the Darkling got fucked up in some major way, and so they represent what happens when an attempt at balance becomes overcorrection. However, when Mal, Alina, and the Darkling are all together, it's easy to imagine how they could reach a true balance. Wherein Darklina's spiritual connection is tethered by Mal's ability to bring them back to earth. I kind of like to think of them as a seesaw, where Alina and the Darkling are both ends of it and Mal is the piece in the middle basically holding it all together.
three things I like about this ship (x)

listen, ofc i knew how the season would end for malina because i got spoiled, and i’m fine with it. first of all, well we didn’t have a real break up scene. and second of all, it more seemed like a crisis of identity for mal... which alina understood. she was literally about to say “you were meant for me” before catching herself. i really like the idea of extending mal’s character outside of his role as an amplifier and even outside of his role as alina’s boyfriend (or alina’s sidekick, alina’s soulmate, alina’s...). he’ll only become a better, richer person for it. and he’ll actually know the value of his love for alina if he truly learns to know himself as a person before. and you know, of course mal has always been a person. but as he’s discovered recently, he’s also always been an amplifier. so how can you tell who is who? what creates fate, and what actually was up to him? his actual choice? the orphanage thing speaks volume: even as a kid, he thought he had done a choice, the choice of his life, but it actually wasn’t a choice. or at least, he thinks it wasn’t a choice, and baghra either didn’t think it was a choice. and what about the fact that his parents die? imagine if he’s to believe that his parents died only for him to fullfill his “destiny” as an amplifier? how messed up would that be not to adress that, just put him back with alina as if he hadn’t had a whole identity crisis ever since he’s learnt he was the firebird? (of course, up until now, he thought he was dying, so there was no real identity crisis to have, except the one where he accepted the idea of dying to save the world). so i’m actually really excited for this storyline, and there sure ain’t no doubt that malina is still the endgame here.

Ok some of you are going to hate me for this but I genuinely really liked Shadow and bone s2!! I was spoiled beforehand of how bad the ending was and how they changed so much- etc. But hear me out , I thought the changes (at least, most of them) made a lot of sense and actually made me like the story more!
First off, Inej going off to fight slavers with her ship made a lot of sense to me. She was looking to the future this whole season. She wanted to find her family, to be free of Ketterdam and her debt to the Staves. Inej looked so free in her last scene, chasing down a slaver ship just like the one she had been captured on. They established that nicely in the show and I love that she's going to find herself (of course she's coming back for the heist, I'm not worried about that). Also the boat crew are going to be such a power team (Mal, Inej, Tolya, Tamar, Nadia)
Malina's changed 'ending' made me really happy too! I adore how they split paths in the end, because I dislike soulmate tropes if they're done badly (which they usually are). However this line that they said, "If I come back to you, it's by choice. Choice, not destiny." Yes! That's everything I wanted from them. They can't be in love because he's the Firebird and basically serves the Sun Summoner as a weapon. (I am become a blade-), but as two people. They have to go away to find themselves before they find each other. Also, in the books, Mal was absolutely miserable tagging along, being Alina's loyal soldier. He wanted to be out there, exploring the world. Being Sturmhond was a smart move as Nikolai has to focus on being king and Mal fits his vibe. Alina is the opposite, she likes the power, as we saw, she craves it, for better or for worse.
They opened up so many great storylines that could make the third season. Alina being an evil queen with shadow summoning abilities that parallels her with the darkling?? Nikolai as the king, also filled with merzost?? One, maybe I'm biased as a nikolina shipper, but now they can understand each other's darkness. we still have yet to get the "i want to kiss you" scene from them. There are actually a lot of things and plots from both books they could fit in the third season. The Apparats cult for one. I know that Alina is going to get more powerful, and this is where the Soldat Sol comes in... maybe she accepts them this time and raises her army. Her hair could still turn white from using her shadow powers. I'm very excited for the prospect of Alina's character development in s3.
Characters like Adrik, relationships like Tamadia, they still need to be developed as well, so they could focus on them in s3. Harshaw and Oncat need to be introduced! Inej's trauma needs to be addressed, and hopefully in s3 or the spin off, they focus a lot more on it. Nina's past as well.
Another change I liked was Matthias choosing not to kill the wolves, and instead killing a guard, permanently imprisoning himself in Hellgate. That was surprising to me because I was going into that scene prepping myself for the wolf deaths. Although I do love Matthias killing them in the books because it shows how messed up Hellgate has made him become, this outcome in the show changes things. Now he is not innocent, now he saw Nina and the pardon that was just out of reach. Matthias damned himself and it hurts. That Helnik angst.
I loved loved the Crows this season. The mini heists, the banter, the development we got from everyone but Jesper especially?!! I was shocked and so so happy that he got an episode to embrace his Grisha heritage and got to be a badass Durast like YES I have been waiting YEARS.
The burial scene with Kaz and Pekka, I agree would have been insane in the SoC spinoff, but I think it fit a lot better in s2, because one, Pekka had already been introduced as a big bad in s1, it wouldn't have made sense to wait years and years to finally take him down for "book accuracy. " Kaz backstory, Pekka taking the Crow Club, all of those things are in Sab s2, so why not just do the burial scene in s2? Also it was so well done I had chills.
There are obviously things I did not like, and I will make another absurdly long post to rant about that. But I think the hate around the season for book fans is unnecessary. I didn't think it was rushed, and I was satisfied as a book fan!

Even Baghra points out that Aleks could have won Alina's love! Even her, validates the notion of love between them. If Aleks built an intimate relationship with Alina to the point that she envisioned a future with him, and he was able to get her love...
Darklina love is literally involved in the dialogues of the series, in addition to their aspect of soulmates with light and darkness, yin and yang, as well as the other parallels that there are between them. Whether it is their relationships ; Luda / Mal. Their outfits / hairstyle ; Alina literally has her hair done like young Aleks during her stay at the little palace, and even their clothes are similar. Their shadows who kiss before them in episode 5. Their goals ; Save Ravka / protect the Grisha. The use of Merzost. Their talk/way of talking and holding each other in season 2. The point is that without the Darkling, Alina has no balance, which is basically confirmed by the fact that she literally gets her powers back at the end by using the same forbidden magic as him. Reasons why I can't believe Darklina won't have interactions in the future with such an ending. It would be highly unlikely.
So why the hell are there big debates in order to point out that Mal is Alina's true /great love ? It sounds so wrong with this kind of information. I don't deny that Alina likes Mal. He is her family, as well as her first crush thereafter. But he never made her feel like anything more than ordinary, special. And she confirms it well with Baghra by saying that it was Aleks who was the first to see that in her. By the way, it reminded me of the dialogue between the Darkling and Mal in season 1, when he talks to him in episode 7.
Besides, I'm very grateful that they didn't include in the series this stupid dialogue where Alina explains to Mal in volume 3 that they were meant for each other and that they would have found each other even if she had lived in the little palace... Bullshit... Instead, they gave us the fact that after getting rid of her firebird aspect, Mal, no longer feels that real north between them. So the notion of fate between Malina is literally erased and if they're together in the future it will be by choice and because it's fate or that backpedaling bullshit the author tried to do in the tome 3 by Grisha.
By the way, I hope that in season 3, Mal will get some real personality development. He passed in season 1, but in season 2... much less.
It is hard to see M*lina as this great love when you compare it with darklina who as, you've pointed out, the show has gone a long way to show as this fated pair, they've got the whole yin/yang, light/dark etc aesthetic and theme going for them, plus all the parallels. I think the whole discourse of people trying to argue that M*l is Alina's great love comes from the author as after her third book was released she gave an interview saying that the whole book story was always supposed to be about M*l and Alina the underdogs that nobody cared about, unfortunately this was true nobody did care about them including the majority of the readers. There is just no competition when you've got darklina there who have a really interesting soulmate type dynamic, as a result it just wasn't believable that m*lina were the ones fated to be together which is part of the reason why the ending was so unpopular. Honestly if the show does decide to go for a M*lina ending I think it would be a mistake as even in the show they just aren't that popular.

loving you’s a bloodsport; harry is a bratty prince, louis is a guard who works in his palace, and niall is the only one who's got his life in control. as someone once said: this is not a love story, but love is in it. that is, love is just outside it, looking for a way to break in. || hate soulmate aus but i came up with the concept in a college computer lab over text instead of working on my paper. gave up on it like 40k in bc of Reasons. had fun writing it tho. raleigh ritchie i owe you everything
hidden gems
keep my name safe (in the space between your ribs); alina falls for her best friend and writes about it in her journal || this one’s just so 🥺🥺🥺 malina u will always be famous to me forever i can’t wait for season 2
all alone against the skies; a glimpse into poseidon and sally's relationship || quite simply some of my best work. shame it’s for a FIC i wrote just for laffs with lads. for a ship i don’t care for much. but that’s just how it is sometimes
disillusioned as snow angels; louis hasn't seen harry in almost two years since harry decided he wanted to start his life anew somewhere unfamiliar. that is, until harry comes back home and louis has to reconcile the past with the present. || i know it’s supposed to be 2 gems but idc i rly like this one a lot so i’m sharing it esp now that waoyf is out <3 my most popular is already a larry one there is no shame here

Disclaimer: it’s hard to comment on a book smack in the middle of a long series… Especially when I never wrote up my thoughts on the first three. I’m trying to keep my thoughts limited to just this book
Likes:
The world building in this series is phenomenal and Glow picks right back up to connect some pieces explaining the connection between the fairy and human worlds and gives us more information about the other kingdoms
We finally get the backstory of Slade/Rip, which is creative and satisfying
We are teased with a growing Rissa subplot that is just divine… And I’m sure sets us up for some interesting things in the next one
Auren/Slade are 🔥 🔥 🔥— their connection evolves both physically and emotionally. Slade has nudged ahead of Casteel as my current book boyfriend. I love the reveal of his additional powers as well
The camaraderie and teasing between all of the sidekicks provides needed levity and makes you feel like you have these wonderful imaginary friends
Dislikes:
The Queen Malina stuff feels a bit forced and I think it is late in the game to try to de-villain her. In this book, you see why she stays in the series but I feel like the stuff could’ve been introduced sooner?
I would have liked to see more character development of the townspeople living near The Rip— what are their thoughts and what the hell do they do with themselves?
It doesn’t quite make sense to me that Slade has to re-stabilized The Rip so often? He must have had a long-term plan for that.
Is it bad that I miss Midas a little bit? We have other villains to contend with, but I would’ve love to hear more about all of his dirty dealings— even if told through flashback
It has a traumatic kick in the gut ending. I take away a fractional star because I have to wait until next year to hear what the hell happens! Poor Slade!
Are we really not gonna see her ribbons again? They were so much of her personality. we need her ribbons.
Will I read the next one? Oh yes— within 24 hours of its release for sure
And if you haven’t seen the Bookish Box Versions of these books, oh my god they’re beautiful!

"the Twisted Soulmate Vibes are off the charts and i am only on ep 4" ohh just wait to reach the end of the season then. You would LOVE it. Specially cause we see Alina doing exactly what Aleks said she would do, not two minutes after the whole speech (and not two minutes after she swore she wouldn't, ever ever ever, do it. Ha, I think Aleksander piteous antics are contagious. I personally loved that)
LIKE. I've seen a few takes that seem to think major things like Alina literally wearing a sexy black dress when she takes off the black kefta and tells Aleksander that she won't ever wear his colors again are a mistake, or a random/stupid oversight by the writers, or something that isn't supported in the text, when once again I am begging Tumblr users to learn how television shows work for $500, Alex. The angry hatesex tension was off the CHARTS in that scene, and I have still not recovered from it! Even before we get into their dark Force bond/dream visitations/twisted-ass Hades and Persephone energy as Alina descends into doing exactly what Aleksander predicted, because he knows her and he's right about her! He's a dick and he's very far aboard the cuckoo-bananas train at the moment, but he's not wrong! And likewise, it's not an accident that Alina is literally becoming him in the name of undoing his mistakes, and just doubling down on everything he's tried to warn her about! This is all very deliberate!
One of the major reasons I was apprehensive about this season was if they were planning to just put Alina's comparatively weak character arc and the Malina hot mess on screen without attempting to challenge it, change it, or otherwise explore it more deeply. But they are doing all sorts of interesting things with it, they've already made major changes to Mal's character which means he's not a raging jealous dickhead all the time, and Jessie Mei Li's performance is phenomenal. Like, you instantly understand that she's going feral, she loves this new power too much, she's beginning to believe that she is in fact the Special Chosen One and can do what she wants, and she knows it's a bad thing and is clinging extra-hard to Mal and pretending wildly that he and a normal life is the only thing she wants, while it's obvious to everyone (including Mal) that this isn't true. Mal is actually likeable and realizing that there's this MASSIVE gulf between them while he's trying to save the girl he used to know while she's just miles and miles away from him, and it's GOOD! And this is coming from someone who was really dreading having to sit through Malina this season, if they were just going to play it straight and not acknowledge all the problems with it, and they didn't do that. So. Fair play.
Likewise, I'm not sure if this is because people think Alina should just have immediately apologized to Aleksander and admitted he's right about everything, because that was never going to happen (especially since Baghra nails it by pointing out that Aleksander had a chance to earn her love and not steal her power, but he blew it super hard complete buffoonery etc). Aleks is WAY too far gone to be rational, he's in his final downward spiral, and Alina is just starting hers. But like, we all bitched about the end of Ruin and Rising, and the showrunners really went "yeah, you're right" and threw it out with their whole pussy! I haven't gotten to the end of the season, but I've seen enough hints to be EXTREMELY Eyes Dot Emoji about it. They changed the whole thing, they did so in a way that emphasizes Aleksander and Alina's twisted, dark, desirous two-halves-of-the-same-coin, lovers/enemies/lovers/enemies Mobius strip, and it's just really GOOD. Way better and more innovative than I thought they were going to be, and not afraid to make major changes to the source material and even the main character, so like. Yeah.
