Re: TMNT Michelangelo having ADHD in canon and being autistic in fanfics.

I found this comment in an ADHD support group, and it describes Mikey perfectly.

"I can often tell by looking at a person that they have ADHD - that they are empathic, that they have high intuiton and are very "imaginative". Sometimes, a photo will catch it, too!"

More and more people in the fandom headcanon Mikey with ADHD, but they don't have to, it's already canon.

I've been nudging Mikey's Autistic traits for years, because Donnie was stereotyped as an autistic nerd since the late 2000s. In 2012, 2003, and 2016, I like to think Leo is also autistic. Rise Raph, too.

There are many ways to be autistic, not just Donatello.

See. As a spectrum we're a Mobius Strip, an Ouroboros, a color wheel, never a line. No mild or severe, no high or low, just varying traits and presentation.

(The autistic advocate community as a whole prefers " is autistic" to "has autism" since we see it as defining and identifying, how our brains are wired. It falls on the individual to say if they prefer Identity First Language or Person First Language.)

A Possible New Autism Symbol.

I like the Rainbow Mobius Strip, but I'd also like to have one of the autism awareness symbols be Blue Roses. Because blue may seem wrong for roses, but it's right for us. It's beautiful, original, unique, and symbolizes hope. Plus "The Glass Menagerie" is one of my current special interests and I have a headcanon that Laura Wingfield, aka Blue Roses, is autistic.

Headcanon across all iterations because it relates to my own Neurodivergences because I said so:

Donatello drinks all the coffee but Michelangelo actually medicates with it. ADHD is just Like That sometimes.

(Which reminds me to take my tyrosine and mucuna supplements along with the Adderall in the morning.)

Mike and Don each slide around the autism mobius strip the way I and husband do and occasionally bump into each other.

Don waved his arms. “Caffeine has similar effects to the chemicals in drugs commonly used to treat Attention Defecit Hyperactivity Disorder, Inattentive Type, which Mikey has. It’s not like we can order a prescription for him. He needs to start drinking more caffeine, it might help balance out the neurotransmitters.”

“Donnie,” Raph said very slowly, “Are. You. Insane? Wouldn’t coffee and energy drinks make him even more hyper?”

“No!” Don said triumphantly. “No, that’s just it, with ADHD it has the exact opposite effect. Stimulants would keep the flow of the proper neurotransmitters in check. See, in ADHD, the neurotransmitter is prematurely reabsorbed back into the neuron. So, that portion of the neural network cannot relay messages in an adequate and timely way, thus contributing to the disordered working and wiring.”

His hands flew even faster, and he keenly noticed that the only brother keeping up was Mikey.

Donnie took a breath.

“So, okay, this means that the drug, say, caffeine, would hold the neurotransmitters, like dopamine and norepinephrine, longer in the synapse so it can affectively bind to the receptor, so messages in the brain are better received, which is how typical, regular brains work. Mikey’s brain can’t do that by itself. Joining the neurotransmitter to the receptor is fitting a key into a lock. Caffeine would just help facilitate the fitting of the key.”

Leo and Raph had blank, glazed looks. But Mikey’s face had lit up, his eyes sparkling. He had propped his cheeks in his hands, and the grin on his face was like a light bulb.

“I didn’t understand a word you said, Dee. But I totally get what you’re talkin’ about.”

Me, trying to explain how I'm autistic to someone with an autistic kid who thinks he might be autistic so I was trying to be simplistic:

Yes, the scholarly side of autistic advocates have linked it to genetics. Environmental cofactors are still being studied. But it's really just our developing brains rewiring into a more sensory oriented neurotype. Autistics have a lot more sensory neurons all over, it's been found. We're like Linux in a Mac world, to use a popular analogy. And we get quickly overloaded with a deeper synesthetic reaction to both external and internal stimuli, thus the functioning labels given to us are much too arbitrary. Our spectrum isn't a line, it's a Mobius strip. A color wheel. A sundae bar.

Like... my support needs are low for the most part, but that doesn't mean my functioning levels are high. It doesn't mean my autism is mild or slight. It means that neurotypical society sees my autism as "less disruptive" overall.

For example, I headcanon all four Ninja Turtles as autistic in four different ways. We know how unique they each are. And they each display a comorbidity or two, like Mikey's ADHD. I'd say they all have PTSD, just imagine Donnie's though. And Raphael has multiple anxiety disorders, alexithymia, emotional dysregulation. But for years and years, I didn't know those terms fifteen years ago, even ten.

TMNT History Time! Back in the 2000s after the 2003 show came out, Aspergers became noticed and the fandom decided that Donatello had it. Some folks also knew that Michelangelo had undiagnosed ADHD, but ADHD was being demonized at the time and many fans didn't like that Mikey was "the poster boy." And others suspected that Mikey had it but they stereotyped him and exaggerated his loud obnoxious immaturity.

I had just been diagnosed ADHD back then, just before 2003, also with dyscalculia that nobody understood. And I was also a young adult undiagnosed autistic. I'd also been born with what the doctors called 'mild' spastic cerebral palsy that was seen as Not So Bad because I didn't look like a stereotype. And because of all that, I had very strong Feelings about Don and Mike, for me it was a big deal, seeing different parts of myself in both turtles.

History within History! During that time, Autism Speaks was founded and quickly became disliked by the majority of autistic activists as they advertised and cemented the vicious ideas that autism was a terrible burden that made people want to kill their children, that autistic people weren't fully human, in fact 'the least us' and likened to lepers according to the founders of Autism Speaks, that autistic kids weren't full human people unless they had ABA and were physically abused and emotionally gaslit into conforming, even in modern ABA which encourages manipulating autistics into being happy, the core of the ABA therapy concept.

Now, by that point, my mentors had coined terms like 'neurodivergence' to identify individuals versus neurodiversity as a group - they had previously coined 'cousin neurologies' to connect the comorbidities between autism and ADHD and other conditions. Autism Speaks began plagiazing their online essays, editing them to leave out important parts, because the autistic authors talked about being fine the way they were, talking about not needing a cure.

Then, Autism Speaks began promoting eugenics. And afterwards it was decided that Aspergers, which came out of the eugenics programs from WWII, would be merged into the autism spectrum in the USA, which felt right as more research showed how autism was not so much a disability or disorder by itself as it was a whole brainbody wiring down to cellular structure, a collective of traits, skills, syndromes, strengths and weaknesses, which could be disabilities and skill sets alike.

An entire movement within the advocate community began that started looking at fictional characters who could be autistic or ADHD or both. Kids and adults would be able to relate.

And now, fandoms are actively creating original characters with autistic traits, with ADHD, by actual autistic fans or allies who closely research the neurologies. I didn't have anything like that when I was young.

I didn't have the words, not even labels to defend from people who.now roll their eyes claiming "labels are for soup cans" and "we don't do labels" - also, PS, in order to say you don't do labels you first need to be able to know what labels you could have and be able to make a choice in having labels, and I didn't even have that - so I love having such a choice.

And you will have to put up with me writing fiction about autistic ADHD pansexual demisexual characters who are psionic. See, having been born with brain damage and cerebral palsy, I really wanted to be Jean Grey so I could have telekinesis) and I once wrote an unfinished crossover between X-Men and Ninja Turtles where 2003 Mikey gained the power of The Phoenix and later a Supernatural crossover where Mikey and Sam became friends.

TLDR, there's a lot of flavors of being autistic.

YES - but he uses it to his advantage. The lack of coordination just means working That Much Harder to gain flawless skills. I mean, it's Leo. It's in his bones that he will work harder than he needs to, no matter the incarnation. Throughout Rise we've seen him twist his clumsiness like a cat, "I meant to do that!" and own it. Because, well, Leonardo.

Based on that one anons statement about the rottmnt fandom, I just wanted to say how cool it is about having a pretty well-experienced tmnt fan in the fandom... if that makes sense LOL Like, you have a lot more things to say and a better understanding on how people are in fandoms. It's hard to put into words, sorry. But it just makes the whole rottmnt fandom feel more chill whenever you give your thoughts and opinions. I always enjoy reading what you have to say. Much Love! 💕

Awww, THANK YOU. That really helps my confidence levels here, since I get anxious often about all my rambling.

And I do everything I can to not stir up too much ugliness that others can bring, because I remember being a fan in my teens and twenties and feeling so sure of everything. I see how easy that feeling is now with constant Social Media and immediate connection that I didn't have at that age. I got to grow up floating through the slowly growing fandom with each version. And the specifics would change but the interactions, the headcanon wars, those never changed. Every single petty argument has been done and I've seen it.

Sometimes I'll try to get between a fight but my words mess up and I have to just back away and watch fans hurt each other over.

For example, there were always heated disagreement over the Raph and Mikey dynamic in different versions but it exploded with 2012. See, after 2012 ended and our love affair waned, we really got into the different kinds of ways siblings acted... and to be honest I as an only child hated parts of the dynamic to the point where I wrote an entire AU full of love and apologies- but I also kept looking at the equally valid concerns of fans who saw nothing wrong and who kept saying it was normal. I had to take all sides into account because I didn't have experience. Which is what I seek in general. And then people began blatantly attacking fans who wanted to discuss the "abuse" aspect. It disturbed me. The fans headcanoning the unhealthy family dynamic struck back in defense and everything got really really bad. It went from "let's talk about the writing of these characters and how we the fans interpret it" to "if you think the characters are like this, you are wrong and deserve physical violence brought upon you" and it hurt to scroll through the tags for a while.

And then it seemed to fade as other arguments popped up, echoing the decades past, and when Rise happened, there was a little bit of disagreement over how it portrayed a family. Nothing vicious. And there was agreement across the board that Michelangelo was obviously portrayed and treated with more love and care, finally showing his ADHD artistic and psychic sensitive side since Mirage and Archie. So that right there brings fans together. Seeing Donnie with autistic traits that aren't stereotypical is also joining the fans, and part of me, as an ADHD Autistic, is both joyously elated and nervously worried because I desperately need to see both Donnie and Mikey with accurate representation regardless of whether or not canon confirms anything.

Like, I spent a decade headcanoning Mikey as autistic, just with very different traits, and I wound up writing a post on Don and Mike representing the varied circular twisting spectrum. And then other autistic fans brought up traits in Leo and Raph, all versions. And nowadays when I read fanfics written by autistics featuring autistic Leo or Raph, that nervous joy rears its head because I just want All Four to represent. And now that I with fellow advocate scholars are looking into ADHD as being on the Mobius spectrum of autism, there's a world of What Else Do The Ninja Turtles represent? coming into the fandom that before were less known due to smaller circles.

So, I love that you appreciate my insights, as random and ranty as they are. I do my best to ignore the fans who don't like my rambles (I got told "for once in your life just shut the fuck up" when they hadn't mentioned my being a problem before, and somehow it felt like my nerves were shivering taught strings caught on wire and it's still a vile sensation). I don't search for praise but I'll take it all when I get it.

I feel like the Rise fandom has some of the most creative, beautiful ideas for all sorts of AU What If stories, because there's the entire history of the franchise to bring in and pay tribute to. That's part of why I'm still here. The main part is, you know, sticking with my biggest autistic special interest that I've clung to since I was nine.

Alright, I know I've asked about specific TMNT 2003 headcanons, I'm fairly certain I've asked about 2012, so since there was a new episode of Rise, what are some of your autistic headcanons for Rise Donnie and Mikey? (will I ever stop asking for autistic headcanons? Probably not, lol. Unless you ask me too of course, then I'll stop)

It would make my days if you would request autistic TMNT scraps. I remember writing a Rise neurodivergent queer post a while back but it was a summary. So here's a quick Mikey and Donnie headcanon.

Donnie is what the neurodiversity paradigm community might dub an autism stereotype. Mikey is the one nobody outside of the community thinks of because he's not stereotypical. He's the surprise autistic. He's got the ADHD and the wild imagination, not necessarily the cliched logical and mathematical intellect. In the end, the both of them slide all over the autism mobius strip like a playground and represent one whole ass autistic. Me, they represent me, it's my headcanon, cough.

Donnie chews pens and pencils and he doodles in the margins of his blueprints. He has a whole separate sketch pad for battle shell designs and tech no extensions, he prints out designs online and mutters to them. He has a ridiculously large collection of pens and twirls them as he thinks.

Mikey uses wall art as a sensory outlet. Walls all to himself that he attacks with wide brush strokes and tiny pinpoints of bright colors. He never explains what they mean if they even stay long enough. Hidden in his room is a stack of drawings and watercolors than mean different things. Leon is slowly starting to translate some of Mikey's color language, they make a game of it. Donnie prefers straight communication, and Mikey sometimes times how long it takes before Donnie gives up and assigns his own translations, which can be deep. Raph just praises Mikey regardless.

Ack, I could have done better, but it's all I could come up with. For now.

(Note: I have no idea where this came from. I started writing it from a slip of a thought, and in less than an hour, this whole thing happened. It takes place sometime during the "Water And Oxygen" story. It's more B-Team fluff. I keep getting anonymous reviews and messages about "Don being somewhere on the autism spectrum" which makes me groan because that is not the wording anymore, it's technically not a spectrum, it's like a curvy shape, a Mobius strip, an Infinity knot, an Ouroborous. Spectrums mean a high and a low, and that's not what autistics do. So I think I unconsciously wanted to prove that "Look, you're trying to stereotype a character, is it because he's into science? There are plenty of reasons why he's autistic, but stop shoving him into these holes. For science's sake, I'm autistic, here, read this." And then I make little mention of the stereotype. We...we are difficult to pin down, okay? And I'd rather readers come at me with "but why" rather than "because this". PS, we don't suffer. Autism isn't a disease. It is a neurodevelopmental disability with a communication disorder at its core. It houses dozens of syndromes that affect attentiveness, sensory perception, executive function, physical balance, communication, understanding, socialization, interaction with stimuli, and essentially the entire body-mind. But it's not awful, we are never ever to be pitied for it, it's not scary, we're not trapped, it can be worked around with the proper accessible tools, and the next person who tells me it must suck is getting a salty, fire-tongued lecture. Anyway, these two kids are what I am in this series from the start for reasons and they're amazing, go B-Team.)

(PPS this was written a while ago and I've become kind of more open to spectrums as long as they aren't linear. I am not a straight line. I'm not straight in general but whatever.)
