Unleash Your Inner Monster: A Guide to Creating Unique and Memorable Fictional Monsters. Part 1: Purpose
When creating a fictional monster, its purpose in your story is crucial. The monster's role can make or break the narrative, so it must be carefully considered. Here's how to craft a monster with purpose:
Define Its Role: Before diving into the details of your monster, determine its role in your story. Is it the main antagonist, a secondary threat, or a misunderstood creature? Understanding its purpose will help you shape its characteristics and behavior.
Tailor Its Traits: The traits of your monster should align with its role. If it's the primary antagonist, it needs to be a formidable foe. If it's a misunderstood creature, it should be capable of eliciting empathy from readers. Consider the physical and behavioral traits that will support its purpose.
Use Metaphors: Monsters can be metaphors for real-world issues or fears. For instance, a monster that represents the dangers of genetic engineering might be created through gene splicing, and this technique makes the monster unique and adds depth to the story.
Create Tension: A monster that poses a real threat to your protagonist will create tension, making the story more engaging. To achieve this, the beast should have a distinct advantage over the protagonist, forcing them to rely on their wits and resources to survive.
Give It A Weakness: The monster's weakness ultimately allows the protagonist to overcome it. The flaw can be physical or psychological, but it should be significant enough to provide a clear path to victory.
By focusing on the purpose of your monster, you can create a creature that is not only terrifying but also serves a clear narrative function. Carefully considering the monster's role, traits, and weaknesses will help you craft a compelling story that resonates with readers.

Monster Mash
A massive crossover between iconic monster from popular culture.
Most commonly found in a setting where the heroes live in a world where this creatures existed and may be part of a Crossover Cosmology, especially if they themselves are supernatural. The creatures, rather than becoming shut-ins who never leave their designated niche or dark corner of the world... they actually socialize. Vampires and werewolves, usually antagonists, agree to keep up a mutual hidden existence against humans. Fairies and ghosts work together to scare local homeowners. And the wizards work with all of them to save both worlds.
Is not really necesary it had to involve terror of any type.
Examples:
The Monster Squad: The movie has Count Dracula attempting to raise an army of darkness with the assistance of Frankenstein's Monster, a werewolf, a mummy, and a gill-man.
Goosebumps (2015): The movie and it's sequel had monsters from the titular books that they were releashed.
Hotel Transylvania: The main characters are Dracula and his daughter; their friends and guests include a mummy, a werewolf, Frankenstein, witches, an invisible man, a blob, and more. Justified by the title setting being, well, a hotel for monsters.
Nightmare Before Christmas: The citizens of Halloween Town include living skeletons, ghosts, zombies, witches, vampires, a werewolf, a devil, a monster clown and a mad scientist with his stitched-together creation, along with many original monsters.
Monsters vs Aliens (2009): The movie includes versions of the Fifty-Foot Woman, the Fly, the Blob, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Mothra are gathered together to kick alien butts. The Invisible Man also used to be a member of the team.
Castlevania: This video game saga, practically runs on this trope, with demons and mythical monsters thrown in for extra variety. Hell, even Cthulhu makes an apperance, as does Leatherface in Order of Ecclesia.
One Piece: The Thriller Bark Arc has a mansion filled with Zombies that do double duty as frankenstein's monsters, an invisible man, a ghost girl who controls ghosts instead of being one, an invisible mix and match critter, a mad scientist, and their leader who bears a striking resemblance to a vampire and has a special ability that renders its targets unable to touch sunlight without burning up.
Ed, Edd n Eddy's Boo Haw Haw: Ed, after watching too many horror movies, hallucinates seeing the cul-de-sac kids as monsters of a different varienty, as witches, aliens, vampiresses, gorgons, a spider monster, etc.

HARBINGER DOWN (2015)
Tumblr media
Get your harpoons ready for HARBINGER DOWN (2015)! ☠️
What's it all about?
Genre: Sci-fi Horror (think John Carpenter and tentacles!)
Runtime: 1 hour 22 minutes, short and sweet, no time to get seasick
Made in the USA 🇺🇸
The Plot:
A research team studying whales in the Bering Sea stumbles upon a frozen Soviet spaceship (talk about unexpected field research!)
Turns out, it's not empty. Oh no, it's full of a gooey, shape-shifting alien monster with a serious case of the munchies
Chaos ensues as the crew of the fishing boat "Harbinger" try to survive - think claustrophobic cabins, exploding fish guts, and enough body horror to make you hug your pillow
Memorable Scene:
The transformation scene! This practical effects monster goes from creepy blob to full-on tentacled nightmare in glorious detail. Prepare to squirm (and maybe applaud the amazing puppeteers)
Acting:
Lance Henriksen steals the show as the grumpy, seasoned captain. He's seen it all, even space goo, and his dry wit cuts through the tension like a harpoon through ice ⚓️
The rest of the cast holds their own, with believable panic and camaraderie in the face of an unknown threat
Cinematography:
The icy Bering Sea setting is bleak and beautiful, adding to the sense of isolation and vulnerability. You can practically feel the freezing wind whipping through your hair
The claustrophobic shots inside the boat build the tension, making you feel like you're trapped right there with the crew
Overall Reception:
Critics were divided, some praising the practical effects and creature design, while others found the plot predictable and the pacing slow.
But hey, what do they know? This is a movie for fans of classic sci-fi horror who appreciate a good monster and a healthy dose of gore.
Personal Rating :
Harbinger Down is a decent monster movie with its share of thrills and chills. The excellent practical effects, Camille and Henriksen's strong performance, and the atmospheric setting make it worth a watch for die-hard sci-fi horror fans. However, the mediocre supporting cast, obvious budget limitations, and predictable plot hold it back from greatness. It's a fun B-movie ride with some genuinely creepy moments, but ultimately, it's an average film that's easily forgotten once the credits roll.
Bonus Trivia:
Not many people know this, but HARBINGER DOWN was actually funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign! Talk about taking matters into your own slimy hands
So, if you're looking for a chilling sci-fi adventure with gooey monsters, witty one-liners, and enough tentacles to fill a Kraken's dream, dive into HARBINGER DOWN! Just remember, never trust a frozen spaceship...
Don't forget to reblog and tell me what you think! Did the monster give you nightmares? Did you side with the captain? Let's chat!

It's close to midnight and something evil's lurkin' in the dark Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes, You're paralyzed
