“That must bother you.” Wanda comments as you return to the ER from your late lunch break together.
You sneak a glance out of the corner of your eye at where Bucky is standing at the entrance to the ER, his signature cheeky smile curving at the corners of his mouth, leaning against the door with all his weight on one strong arm as he chats up a red haired surgical intern.
That same cheeky smile he beamed when you first met him and which is clearly not reserved just for you.
Fuck yes it bothers you.
Bitter envy bubbles in your stomach seeing him simply smiling at another woman. But it’s the implication of that flirty smile that makes your stomach flip altogether.
“What do you mean?” You enquire lightly, trying to play dumb and ignore the tight jealousy clenching at the front of your chest, but your question only prompts Wanda to roll her eyes.
“Your man flirting with Dot over there as if the whole hospital isn’t talking about the two of you being together.” Her outward frustration is nothing compared to the seething spite consuming you, though you focus on not letting that show through your indifferent facade.
Wanda isn’t wrong about the entire hospital knowing Bucky had taken the ‘new emergency medicine resident’ out on not just a second date, but a third, and a fourth as well. And she would know, being the perpetrator of most of those rumours herself.
You had received aggrieved glares from doctors, nurses, anaesthesiologists, and pharmacists alike - all seemingly envious that Bucky Barnes had chosen you to try out dating for the first time. Though, they really had no reason to be.
“He’s not my man.” You try to argue, but Wanda simply stares at you, head slightly cocked, as if to say don’t try to make a fool out of me. “He wants to take things slow.” You reiterate his words to prove your point. If the way he is currently flirting with Dot in full view of anyone in the ER is any indication, as much as you might want him to be, Bucky Barnes is far from being your man.
“He wasn’t taking things slow when you guys fucked in your car at that drive-in movie the other night.” She points out with a sly smile as your cheeks heat at the memory of your fourth date, her eyes drifting to look behind you where they were no doubt landing on Bucky and his amorous intentions, allowing you a moment to compose yourself.
“We’re not exclusive, I wouldn’t even say we’re technically dating - he’s allowed to flirt with and fuck whoever he wants.” Your words come out harsher than you were intending, but Wanda’s expression instead softens, sensing your overeagerness to convince her as more proof of your earnest feelings.
The thought of Bucky hooking up with someone else while you are pining for him every second you are apart makes your stomach churn. Every playful laugh, passionate kiss and sinful touch you share feels special, intimately private - the high possibility that he’s replicating those experiences with others plunges a scalpel right into the centre of your chest.
“Girl, you've got it bad. You need to talk with him about how you feel and what you want out of your ‘relationship’ before he ends up breaking your heart.” She advises, and your shoulders slump, realising she's right. Though, you’re sure it’s already too late to prevent your heart from breaking if he doesn’t feel the same way.
You nod in response, but the prospect of actually having that conversation with Bucky fills your stomach with dread and lurching anxiety. What if he doesn't feel the same way? What if he laughs at you and tells you he’s only ever viewed your connection as something casual? That he’s only in it for the sex while he consumes your train of thought from the moment you wake until you close your eyes at night, only to then appear in your dreams as well.
You can feel your pulse racing at just contemplating exposing your heart to him in that manner.
Taking another glance back at where the two had been standing, you find Bucky nowhere to be seen. Dot, however, is talking to one of her fellow surgical interns in light blue scrubs with what you perceive to be a glum expression.
Though it feels wicked to receive pleasure from someone else's apparent misfortune, you can't help but feel a sense of satisfaction at the thought that perhaps Bucky rejected her advances.
Maybe there is cause for hope after all.
As if on cue, your pager goes off, indicating a new emergency case. You flash Wanda a quick smile before rushing over to the trauma bays, trying your best to push thoughts of Bucky, and his many potential suitors, from your mind.
* * *
After a long shift, and an even longer night alone at home, where you attempted, and failed, at rerouting your thoughts from Bucky and if he was currently with another woman, you find yourself back in the emergency room coming to the end of a gruelling week, yawning as you’re filling out paperwork.
“Big night last night, huh?” You hear a familiar voice from beside you, though in a much more casual tone than is typically directed at you. You turn to see the radiant smile of your direct superior, emergency medicine attending Dr Thor Odinson.
From the moment he was introduced as your attending, there had always been an unspoken pull between the two of you - he was certainly attractive, with a brilliant smile, sparkling eyes and a natural charisma with his patients that definitely added to his allure.
It also helped that he always gazed at you with a captivation that made your cheeks warm and assigned you the most interesting cases.
You chuckle at his inference. You only wished you were yawning from a long night spent with that someone in particular, but that only reminds you he could have been spending all those hours since you’ve seen him last with someone else.
“You have no idea, it was a night of such indulgence… in my medical textbooks. I’ve started studying for my boards.” He lets out a hearty laugh at your explanation, in your opinion a little over exaggerated for the light banter it was intended as.
“I could come over to your place, help you study. I passed my boards only two rounds ago, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve.” He smiles flirtatiously, and though the sight is alluring, it doesn’t stir the same butterflies and desire that Bucky's signature smirk does in your stomach.
For a second you consider perhaps Thor is exactly the type of person you need to take your mind off Bucky - they’re similar in their confident persona and flirty nature, but different enough where it feels like you wouldn’t be going out with a complete replica of the man you can’t get your mind off. Where Bucky is mysterious, Thor is bubbly and convivial.
And though you can hear Wanda’s voice in the back of your mind encouraging that sexual profligacy, you can’t bring yourself to actually covet being with anyone other than your enigmatic paramedic.
Lord, you really do have it bad for him. It’s like an illness.
“I’m sure you do.” You laugh, trying to keep the tone of conversation light and casual. “But I don’t think that’s a good idea. I’m seeing someone.” You’re sure Bucky wouldn’t classify your connection the same way, but hearing a proposition from another man has been confirmation enough for you that you don’t want to be seeing anyone else.
Your heart belongs to Bucky Barnes, even if his heart doesn’t belong to you.
“Barnes… I know.” Thor places a large, sturdy hand to the small of your back as he leans in and whispers warm words against your ear. “I’m still interested. Barnes won’t be in it for the long haul like I would be. Give it some thought.”
What you don’t realise at the time is much like how you watched Bucky flirt with Dot the day before, Bucky is currently observing your interaction with Thor from across the ER. Far enough away where he can’t hear you turning Thor down, but fully aware and incensed that Thor’s hand lingers on your back and what he believes to be a flirty exchange being whispered intimately into your ear.
As cute as you think Thor is, you already know he doesn’t have the same effect on you that Bucky does. And though he may be right in that Bucky isn’t committed to you long term, you’re prepared to open your heart to that vulnerability for the rapture he provides when you’re together.
You turn around, heading for your locker to complete your shift when a smile overtakes your features, noticing Bucky striding towards you. You don’t even have the chance to say his name in greeting before his large hands cup your face, his lips crashing onto yours and abruptly he’s ardently kissing you in front of everyone in the emergency room.
You're taken aback by the sudden intensity of his kiss, but as his warm lips move against yours, you can't help but sense your body responding. His fierce hands trail down your back, pulling you flush against his body, and you feel a hardening bulge in his pants pressing against you. You moan softly into his mouth as his tongue swipes along your bottom lip, feeling overwhelming wetness pooling between your legs.
In the back of your mind, you're aware of the judgmental stares from nurses and doctors working in the ER, and the fact that this is highly unprofessional, but you're too caught up in the passion and Bucky’s public display of downright possessiveness to give a damn.
He pulls back slightly, pupils blown with desire and brimming with something of greed mixed with lust, and without speaking a single word, or sparing a glance to those who had been watching on, he grabs your hand securely and pulls you further into the hospital, towards the surgical wing and into the closest on-call room.
The door shuts with a thud and before you can even register that Bucky’s nimble hands have snibbed the lock behind you, he has you pressed up against the door with his fingers digging possessively into your hips.
He kisses you again, hot and demanding, claiming you as his own. No doubt everyone who saw him kiss you in the centre of the ER knows exactly what’s going on behind closed doors of the on-call room.
“You. Are. Mine.” Bucky asserts between feral, open-mouthed kisses to the sensitive skin of your neck, pushing your white coat from your shoulders so it lands in a heap on the floor and sneaking his hands past the elastic of your scrubs. You’re positive you’ll be covering a hickey with concealer before your shift tomorrow.
The possessive gleam in his eyes when he looks at you while running a finger through your already wet folds makes your stomach flip. You whimper as his cold hands make contact with your warm centre, but the pleasure which tingles up your spine and tightens a knot at the bottom of your belly as he circles your clit makes you forget all about the momentary discomfort.
“No one’s allowed to touch you besides me.” Bucky instructs, slipping one thick finger into your pussy, curling it to graze that spongy spot inside your walls which has you keening. His pace is agonisingly slow, and though Bucky's hands are large, one finger isn’t enough for you to feel full and satiated by him.
You’re positive he knows this, however, and is purposely tormenting you. In this moment all you are craving is more of his touch, more of his kiss, more of him. And that’s exactly what he wants you pining for.
Little does he know, you’re always yearning for him.
“He’s not allowed to touch you.” Bucky growls, adding another finger without warning, using his thumb to draw small circles over your clit while simultaneously scissoring his fingers inside you. Your head falls back, hitting the wall behind you as a moan trickles from your lips.
Bucky’s other hand slips below the hem of your shirt, finding its way to the small of your back, where Thor had touched you through multiple layers of material. His hand on your bare skin elicits goosebumps over your lower back, a reaction you suspect Thor could never pull from you.
Before you can reach your release on his fingers alone, he pulls them out of you, a whimper cascading from your lips as he leaves you feeling empty. While your lips are parted, he prompts you to clean up the arousal coating his fingers with your tongue, tasting the sweet evidence of his effect on you.
He rids you both of your uniforms and underwear, and although you are desperate to be filled by his cock, you know it’s in Bucky’s nature to tease - if you tell him you need him, he’ll just make you wait that much longer to be satisfied.
But Bucky’s clearly not in a teasing mood, nor in a patient one, for when you are both completely naked, he turns you around, steadying yourself against a wall and, nudging your legs apart with his thigh and without hesitation, he thrusts every veiny inch fervently into you until he is fully sheathed, not giving you a moment to adjust as he sets a brutal pace, pounding into you.
You bite down on your bottom lip but it doesn’t stop a guttural moan rumbling up from your chest from the burn of his sudden intrusion.
“You. Are. Mine.” He punctuates each word with a stinging slap to your ass, which only turns you on even more, your flooding wetness evident in the salacious squelch accompanying each of Bucky’s punishing thrusts.
“Say it.” Bucky demands, hips rhythmically meeting your own, pounding into you harder and deeper with every plunge.
When you don’t answer him, your mind short circuiting from the overwhelming pleasure flooding through your entire body like a tsunami, Bucky hooks his forearm around your neck, pulling you back into his chest with a strength where you can feel him all around you, but not tight enough where you can’t breathe altogether.
“Say. It.” He repeats in a severe tone next to your ear which causes a shiver to run down your spine as Bucky flexes his bicep, tightening his hold on you slightly, warning you to obey him.
“I’m yours.” You say breathlessly, hands gripping onto his muscular arm for support as each thrust knocks the air from your lungs, hitting just the right spot inside you which blurs your vision and makes your thighs quiver. “All yours Bucky.”
You feel your body weaken as he pushes you ever closer to falling off the cliff of bliss, Bucky’s strong hold on you the only reason you can remain standing upright rather than your legs giving out completely.
“Bucky, I’m…” You can’t find the words to finish your sentence, instead a wanton sob bubbles up in your throat confirming that you're teetering on the edge of coming undone.
“There’s my good little slut, cum on my cock. My cock.” He removes his arm from caging you to him and moves it down towards where your bodies meet, rubbing tight circles on your clit resulting in your legs shaking uncontrollably as pure ecstasy overtakes your body.
Bucky continues his furious attack on your clit, continuing to pump in and out of you at his rapid pace as you ride out your high. You can’t make out the praise he’s whispering into your ear, everything sounds like a distant hum as euphoria fires in every synapse of your body.
Once he senses you've come down from your orgasm, Bucky’s large hands find your hips, manhandling you as he essentially throws you onto the bed in the small on-call room. Lining the tip of his dick up with your entrance, he enters you again, his pistoning movements erratic as he chases his own high, wrapping his hand around your throat.
“This pussy is mine.” Bucky’s thrusts become sloppy, but he’s mesmerised by the little whimpers falling from your open lips and the bounce of your tits at the continued drive of his cock. His grip on your throat tightens and you know he’s close.
“Fill me up Bucky. Fill your pussy.” You permit, and you can immediately see the surprise flicker in his gorgeous eyes. Finishing inside you isn’t something you’ve done together yet. Cumming on your tits, in your mouth, on your stomach, sure. But always pulling out.
Granting permission for him to cum inside you seems to push him over the edge, Bucky groans as he stills, all the muscles in his beefy body tensing as he spills deep inside you. He smiles down at you, releasing his hold on your throat before leaning down and placing a devoted kiss to your lips.
Bucky pulls out of you slowly, hypnotised by the sight of how both of your releases mix and drip from your core. He collapses beside you, fondness suspended in his steel blue eyes that could so easily deceive you into believing you mean so much more to him than just a casual fuck.
Reaching over the ample space between you, Bucky pulls you all the way into him, arms remaining around your middle and for a moment all you can feel are your slowing hearts beating in time with each other.
You look up at him to find he’s already gazing down at you, prompting a smile to curve at the corner of your lips. The four dates with this man have been the best four dates of your life, but he’s already expressed wanting to take things slow, so you refrain from expressing the notion aloud.
Sensing unsaid words between you, Bucky opens his mouth to speak.
“You’re mine.” He reiterates sternly. “I don’t want anyone else touching you. I don’t want him even looking at you.” You know he’s referring to Thor, and as giddy as it makes you knowing how extremely jealous he’s reacted to Thor simply flirting with you, part of you is piqued knowing he’s ordering this of you when he’s fucking other women.
You’d gladly give yourself just to Bucky Barnes, but you’re not foolishly going to be exclusive with him if he’s not doing the same for you.
“You can’t say that if you’re fucking other people, Bucky. That’s a sexist double standard and I-”
“You think I’m sleeping with other people?” He asks, bewilderment furrowing between his brows as if the notion of having sex with anyone other than you was out of the realm of all possibility. The sight makes your stomach knot with hope and promise, his words suggesting he hadn’t been with anyone else since going on dates with you. “Darling, you are the only woman I’m seeing, fucking, damn talking to. I’m not even thinking about anyone other than you.”
But there is one nagging doubt pricking at the optimism inflating in your chest from his earnestness.
“Don’t lie to me Bucky, I saw you flirting with Dot yesterday.”
A quick look of surprise flashes over his features when these words leave your lips, as if he hadn’t realised you witnessed their interaction, but mostly his eyes show a wounded soul behind them, making you nervous you’ve misinterpreted the entire situation.
“I’m not lying, darling. Sure, she approached me and we harmlessly flirted for maybe a minute tops, but as soon as she even mentioned wanting to see me outside of work I told her no.” Your mind works in overdrive trying to process all his words and the connotations of them, putting down the buoyant feeling in your chest from being in a post orgasmic haze rather than the expectation that Bucky is all yours.
“You told her no?” Even though he clearly stated his rejection of Dot, you need to hear it again for it to fully sink in.
“Why would I want to go out with her, when I have you?” You normally hate when people answer a question with another question, but the implication that you are the only person he wants makes your heart flutter.
You want to believe him. You so badly want to believe him. But past experience has taught you not to trust men when they tell you there’s no one else. That’s almost always a lie.
“I’ll be yours if you’ll be mine.” You pose, fully expecting Bucky to turn down the offer when it involves a commitment from him. He wants to take things slow, you’ve only been on four dates, ruling out seeing other women altogether would surely be a turn off for a player like him.
“I’m already yours.”
You swear your heart stops. Everyone outside of this small on-call room fades into non-existence for the moment when Bucky earnestly meets your eyes.
The pivotal difference between someone claiming you as theirs compared to professing themselves as yours hits you square in the chest.
This time, you kiss him, passionate and desperate even though you've just satisfied each other, your hands tugging at his long hair which you’ve already learnt he enjoys. You move to pull away, your mind set on finally taking his thick, heavy cock in your mouth, but instead his strong arms position you gently against the pillows, caging you underneath his strapping body.
“We’re gonna fuck so often in here they’ll put our names on the door.” Bucky comments with his signature smirk before kissing you again, slow and sensual this time, taking the opportunity to explore your mouth as his hands do the same with your body.
He starts kissing down your naked form before settling between your thighs, somehow already knowing the exact parts of yourself you’re most insecure about and paying those particular attention. The care and affection he’s showing a stark contrast to his roughness earlier, but the intimacy makes you feel special. That you’re the only one who’s seen this soft, romantic side of him.
Perhaps it doesn’t matter that his flirty smirk isn’t reserved just for you when it’s moments like this only you get to experience with him.
You’re the person Bucky Barnes wants. Not Dot the surgical intern, not one of the other numerous doctors in the ER or any of the other hospital staff. You.
Maybe it’s dangerous allowing your heart to believe you truly are the one to change fuckboy Bucky Barnes, but all doubtful thoughts evaporate from your mind when his mouth starts sucking on your already puffy and sensitive clit.
You can let yourself fall, just a little. There’s no harm in that, right?

Criticism of Penacony and why i think HYV shouldve quit while they were ahead.
//vent towards the end, references to suicide while those references are quest spoilers Recently I've been doing world quests and grinding out the new region and been repeatedly finding myself walking straight into microagressions and slights to the point where it's been jarring enough for me to put my game down. As a black dude playing HYV games i know well enough not to act like the stupid billion dollar game company cares about appealing to minorities but its 2024 man.
First off, the obvious issue. Penacony has been repeatedly mentioned by the devs themselves to be based off of the Jazz Age from the U.S. a few decades ago.
Tumblr media
youtube
The Jazz age was a period of time in American History between the 1920's and 1930s where the popularity of Jazz just boomed from being like an indie type of music to one of worldwide popularity. Obviously, Black people in that era are wholly responsible for Jazz itself.
Tumblr media
So yeah, Penacony takes its origins from a key black history movement. Penacony, the region that released at the start of February. Black History Month. Star Rail is arguably one of the most popular games right now in terms of outreach because it's free, its new, and its colorful/futurisric etc.... And yet....
Just like with the rest of the HYV games that take real world inspirations, they fucked over black people and their stories.
In Honkai Impact 3rd, basically we had this one black girl who's like sandpaper brown and complains about how much her DARK SKIN ruins her look and how she bleaches her skin using various products to keep it lighter. She is ashamed of her DARK SKINNED mother who's a military woman. Her father is absent. Her mother is also a grown adult who is a B-rank soldier(main character white teenagers are S-rank for reference). Carole Peppers is her name if you want to go further down that rabbit hole.
In Genshin Impact, besides the fact that people with different skin tones are CLEARLY sectioned into certain regions(no seriously there's no real reason why i shouldnt see a black person in any of the existing regions.), and besides the unnecessary amount of whitewashing and besides the perpetuation of the idea of melanin NOT being natural, every single brown/black character in the game has awful playstyles and/or poor matching with weapons/artifacts, inaccessibilty, and they NEVER make it to the top of any meta tierlists. I'm not outright saying they're bad they're just harder and almost never get specialized weapons.
The only previously relevant example in Star Rail was Arlan, a lightning/destruction character. He chews through his own HP and unlike characters like blade/clara, does not have resistance or healing to handle that. Serval, the other lightning 4 star, out-dps's him veryyyyyyy easily. So yeah, the ashy black person character basically dies if you use him for too long and is never relevant TO ANY quests except where he needs to be the sidekick.
sometimes these games have dragons, animals that can understand and process english, or magic.... but then not black people...
Penacony has no black main characters. No black stories of relevance. Yesterday found an NPC whose name was detracted from chocolate and the player had the option to let commit suicide.
Tumblr media
yeah ill get to that 💀. This large mass of at least 4 supernatural looking characters and yet no black person. NOT EVEN ANY OF THE CHARACTERS FROM penacony itself are black.
so yesterday I was grinding clockwork quests and had to help out some apathetic shopkeeper named Cocona. Her story was almost a bit sad but midway into going through her background i realized her name is one letter off of cocoa. now imagine being on a creative team coming up with a name for a melanated NPC and somebody decides on fucking CHOCOLATE with an extra letter. before anybody implies that one was something i shoehorned, think about how itd go if i had a bunch of POC characters and one white girl named crackerella.
Cocona and her once again sad backstory reach a hard tipping point as the player follows her to the edge of a building and can either grab her to stop her from jumping or simply let her end her life jumping off the building.
Yes we've seen how this game lets you make choices and watch the consequences of your actions, but there have been established rule-breaking predecents. Take Ruan Mei's quest where you have no choice but to eat the cake she offers you and once again lose the ability to make a choice on saying anything related to her. or any time the trailblazer gets pushed into a fight and cannot de-escalate. ....with this in mind consider why was saving the cocoa girl from killing herself NOT a forced option.
normally id be the kind of silly person looking for lore bits and stuff and making theories, (like how clockie is from the path of elation :v)but as a black dude this whole region is disgusting. THEY ARE GENTRIFIYING JAZZ AND COVERING UP ITS BLACK ORIGINS idk who said HYV cared about their audiences they fucking dont.
wouldve posted this on reddit but whoop dee do i am NOT getting doxxed today.

Don't be shy tell us more headcanons!!!! I'm eating this up.
has my blog finally found a main purpose? i post my headcanons here? hell yeah
Tumblr media
Miscellaneous rival cast headcanons | XY
a lot of my headcanons are based on a mix of fanon, manga, anime, pokemon masters, and main game elements put into a blender
calem and serena are 18! not as much a headcanon and more implied canon, they can’t be older than 19 because they are clearly still teenagers but they can’t be younger than 18 because emma (who is canonically 16) makes remarks about them being old. 16 and 17 are too close for that to be the case, so they are at least 18!
shauna is 17, as well as tierno.
trevor is 15 being the youngest, though the smartest and most reliable member of the group.
calem and serena are both trans (calem FTM, serena MTF) serena transitioned before moving to vaniville and helped calem transition with the help from her experience in fashion when he came out.
serena is the protagonist, while calem is the rival as that’s how it’s set in masters.
serena is childhood friends with shauna, and trevor. while calem is childhood friends with serena and tierno, the friend group formed over several years of naturally growing together before they all set off on a journey together
shauna is the type of girl who is a little crush crazy, always hopping from one guy to the next to fawn over. she pretty much instantly fell head over heels for calem when they met (based on her dialogue during the firework show) however, her crushing for calem ends up back firing because of how often calem and serena are near each other; growing into another crush on serena at the same time. hijinks ensue.
grace considers calem to be like one of her own, he’s always welcome in their home no matter what. she occasionally refers to him as her son in law.
serena and calem have insane romantic tension they are utterly oblivious to but everyone is painfully aware of, including shauna who is stewing in very complicated jealousy.
tierno is calem’s closest friend other than serena, anything he can’t bring up to serena for one reason or another gets told to tierno.
tierno is really good at reading people, he pays attention by second nature and despite coming off as rather unserious he has a way of calming people.
tierno had a crush on serena at some point after meeting and has asked her out on three occasions, all being declined. he’s a good sport about it and isn’t afraid to play it for laughs
trevor is very sick and tired of his friends reckless shenanigans, tierno and calem especially.
trevor is the team mom here, he didn’t agree to it but he is.
shauna is a little slow on the uptick, but a big gossip. which means everyone else is a gossip by proxy.
going off of Y’s habit in the manga of being too shameless for her own good with getting dressed in semi public places, serena has the same habit. you get used to it after a while.
despite seemingly having her head in the clouds, shauna will bitch you out if prompted.
serena’s mom, grace, is a single mom. serena is the product of a fling during grace’s younger years as a rhyhorn racer, which is why she’s so overbearing about serena’s future, she wants her to have a good life to overcompensate for that fact.
trevor lives with his grandparents in santalune, his parents work overseas.
tierno lives with his parents in aquacorde town, as does shauna
please consider with me for a moment, serena/shauna/calem. do they have a ship name i think the chao they’d make is beautiful-

Ghost Part 4 | Joel Miller
Pairing: Joel Miller x GN!Reader
Word Count: 1.4k
Synopsis: Reader, Joel, and Ellie continue their journey to Colorado. Cute moments between the trio, as well as a late night discussion near the fire between Reader and Joel. Still a slow burn folks.
Warnings: Implied physical abuse (in reference to the Military school Ellie went to), Sexual tension, Imperial measurement system used, Y2K mentioned.
Author’s Note: She’s a little short but I hope you forgive me as it was technically supposed to be half a chapter. Reader is given some more specific personal details due to the types of conversations had on the trip. Reader was a teacher, and it’s implied they have left-leaning political beliefs. It’s also clarified that the reader has known Joel for at least 10 years, so there’s definitely more of a specific age range the reader is supposed to fall in, but I guess you could just ignore that. Ellie is slightly out of character because this girl would never willingly go to sleep but I need it to happen for plot.
Previous Chapter, Next Chapter
___
You sway slightly on the horse, now riding side-by-side Ellie and Joel on a wider path. The journey so far has been filled with light banter and Ellie’s endless questions about the time before, wondering if things were different than they are now.
“Back then, there were two main ways of looking at things,” Joel says. “Some people wanted to own everything, and some people didn’t want anyone to own anything at all.” For a moment you’re tempted to interject, to correct the oversimplification, but you ultimately decide against it. It doesn’t really matter now anyways.
“Which one were you?” Ellie asks.
“Neither.” Joel responds. “I just did my job.”
“Which was… building?” Ellie fills in, occasionally glancing at the forest surrounding you.
“That’s right. Houses, stores, that kind of thing.” For a moment you imagine what Joel might have been like before all this. Doing hard, honest labor, coming home to a kid and maybe a spouse. You had met him nearly a decade in, so there was little frame of reference aside from his current behavior. You wondered had you met him back then if you would get to hear him laugh more.
“We were called contractors.” He finishes his explanation.
“The contractor.” Ellie repeats in a silly deep voice, causing you to laugh. “That’s pretty cool.”
“Yeah…” Joel pauses. “We were cool. Everybody loved contractors.” Joel said, sharing a grin and a knowing look with you. Thankfully you manage to stifle your laughter, maintaining Ellie’s romanticized view of Joel's previous occupation.
You suggest you begin to make camp as the sun begins setting. Taking the steps to create a fire after tying your horses to a nearby tree. You stretch out your back, it having become stiff from the day's journey.
It’s at this point you notice Joel starting to make preparations for dinner, crouched over the fire with Ellie sitting beside him.
“How about you let me handle this tonight, cowboy?” You say from behind him. Ellie laughs at the nickname as he turns to look up at you with an incredulous but slightly amused look on his face. “Take a break.” You suggest.
“I do not need-” he stops, looking at the hand you’ve extended for him to give you whatever non-perishables you’d be feasting on that night. He sighs, but ultimately forfeits and allows you to take over, finding a comfortable stop to wind down at. Ellie remains in the spot she held next to Joel, watching as you make dinner.
“Hey! Wait a minute.” She says excitedly, startling you. “You’ve never told me what you did before.”
“I was a teacher.” You respond with a small smile.
“Oh.” Ellie says, clearly disappointed as her posture deflates.
“Yeah, it’s certainly no contractor.” You say sarcastically.
“I mean, it’s just that you don’t really seem like a teacher.” Ellie clarifies.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” You turn to her and ask with a fake offense.
“Well all my teachers were really mean.” She says, pausing as she brings her knees up to her chest and rests her chin on them. “I mean, they yelled and…” she trailed off, staring into the fire. Your face falls.
You’d heard stories about the Military Schools in the QZ. Sometimes younger officers, freshly graduated, would get a little too drunk; say things of an unpatriotic nature that they wouldn’t have otherwise. What horrified you the most is that they don’t even fully grasp the extent of the abuse. So much of it is normalized within those walls.
“I’m sorry, that’s not right. It shouldn’t be like that.” You say quietly while stirring the contents of the pot.
Ellie shrugs, arms moving up to cover more of her face. You sat panicked for a minute, desperately trying to come up with a change in subject to improve her mood.
“Do you know what Y2K is?” You look down and ask.
“No.” She replies, shaking her head.
“Ah!” You say, sitting back slightly from the food. “Well then, let me tell you about a time we thought the whole world was going to end from turning a page on our calendars.” You say in a theatrical voice.
“Wait really?!” Ellie says perking up, a grin forming on her face.
“Yes! And all because of computers…” You say, wiggling your fingers ominously.
Dinner was good, well as good as soup from a can can be. Still, the company around you was pleasant with Joel finishing his nap and rejoining the conversation once food was served. After the sun had set, Ellie took to her bed roll and went to sleep. Which left you and Joel to softly discuss your plans for the rest of the journey.
Once the “business” talk was done things quieted down, and your ears filled with the sound of a crackling fire as worry grew about Joel mentioning the previous night.
His head was held straight but his gaze towards his hands. His lips pressed together lightly as he cleared his throat.
“Look uh,” he starts in a low voice, tilting his head to the side as he looks at you. “You were right.” You felt your chest tighten at his words.
“I’m sure I was, but about what?” You say, feigning ignorance. He gives a tense laugh that is really more of an exhale.
“That I…” He pauses, averting his gaze as he sways his head with his words. “That I don't have to be alone, that I don’t have to go through… things… alone.” You nod slowly with a smile.
“I’m glad that you realized that… that you feel that way.” You say in an equally tense tone as you toy with the material of your jacket. A silence falls over the two of you once again.
You briefly look up to appreciate the star filled sky, debating whether or not to say something. However you open your mouth to speak at the same time Joel does, resulting in a string of apologies and insistences that the other go first. Ultimately he wins and you speak.
“With the uh, other stuff… I said.” You say, ducking your head and bringing a hand up to rub the back of your neck. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or,” you gesture your hand at nothing. “Y’know anything like that I just-”
“You didn’t.” He cuts you off.
“Oh, okay. Well… good.” You say somewhat relieved, glad that you hadn’t offended your friend of many years, but still uncertain of where you stood with him. It grows quiet again and you turn to Joel, trying to get a read off him. His brow is drawn together in thought as his mouth opens to speak.
“Did you mean it?” He finally says, turning to look at you. His dark eyes look to yours from less than a foot away with firelight glinting off of them. Both of you had not realized how close you had become in your attempts to quiet the conversation. Your heart quickens in your chest.
“Yes.” You say breathily, knowing what he is referring to. His eyes flicker down to your lips as his own part. You swallow, mouth suddenly becoming very dry. From the corner of your eye you can see his chest fall and rise and quickly as your own, breath becoming heavy.
You both gasp as a log tumble from the top of the fire, startling you. Turning back to Joel you see a blush coming across his face, no doubt reflecting your own.
“You should uh,” he starts, licking his lips and leaning back slightly. “You should probably get some rest.” He says in a hushed voice, lips upturned in a way that is barely noticeable.
“Yes.” You say, pausing as your brain takes a moment to process. “Right, yes.” You stumble slightly when standing up, the blush on your face deepening with embarrassment.
“Good night, Joel.” You stammer out before going over and climbing into your sleeping bag.
“Night.” He says lowly, adding your name to the end. He adjusts his posture, preparing for the next few hours of watch. Just a few feet away you do your best to calm your heart and mind, knowing for certain that was not all just in your head.

ACFTL was disappointing
Okay so it is currently 1:41 AM and I have finished reading A Curse for True Love and I have been let down and just wanted to get my thoughts out
Jacks characterization was the biggest down fall; The book is basically about Evangeline pinning for Jack but I wished it was the other way around; Jacks finds out Evangeline lost her memories and avoids him because she believes he is dangerous and he gets pissed off and desperately tries to get her back. I think this change in story telling would have allowed so much character growth for Jacks considering the fact he is so cold and calculating and having him grow desperate to have Evangeline by his side shows how much she had affected him and also showcase his humanity/vulnerability in his desperation to have her by his side as opposed to being cold and indifferent which leads me to the next point
JACKS BEING AN ASSHOLE-Literally every Evakjacks scene starts like this Jacks says a sassy/asshole dialogue>save Evangeline>Evangeline swoons>Jacks goes back to being an asshole again. Now I get Jacks often puts out a cold front because he doesn't want to be too close to Evangeline and hurt her. But we are three books in and it is established that Jacks loves her. So I don't understand the unnecessary rudeness like ie coming in the middle of the night tossing clothes at her face as she is waking up and almost knocking her off the bridge (yes I am well aware he was never going to let Evangeline fall) but dang does he have to be rude all the time???? I wanted Evangeline to tell him off, all she needed to say was something like "Jacks stop being such a jerk and wasting my time " and he would have stopped. But no. Evangeline is constantly talking about how angelic his face is and how blonde his hair is. Jacks treat your girl better pls????
Evangeline and damsel in distress x 1000000 -damn my girl cannot catch a break literally everyone is trying to kill her. Now I am a firm believer that strong female characters don't have to be physical fighters and I am ok with Eva not being a fighter. However, I wish she would have gotten herself out of danger at times maybe just by using her wits or having a strategy? I got tired of seeing Jacks saving her. Yes he did teach her self defense but not much came out of that?
SO MANY MISSING PLOT POINTS- The bite of on Evangeline's wrist-does she owe Jacks a debt anymore? Luc? What about Evangeline's parents, what about her family's shop-does she not want to go back to Valenda?? Probably more I cannot think of right now.
Evangeline is not the first fox? Major disappointment in that. The first two books heavily implied that Evangeline was the first fox and there were so many hints regarding that ie Chaos telling Evangeline she looked like the first fox in TBONA and Jacks having volumes of the archer and the fox in his office (clearly he is not over the fox girl either) Also the fact he is over Donatella just like that?? Didn't she cause him so much heartbreak? Atleast having them talk it out would have helped to bring closure. Also are we never going to figure out who the first fox girl was? If not Evangeline? IDK it takes away the true love/soul mates aspect that drawn me to Evajacks in the first place imo
TOO MUCH APOLLO. I don't know why we got so many chapters of him, I rather had more chapters of Jacks and EvaJacks moments. Especially when it was established that he is the antagonist so I do not know why he was a main character when it really showed have been more about Evangeline and Jacks
No evajacks wedding-I am super bitter that we don't get to see Jacks and Evangeline having their wedding like in her dream
Overall, I think TBONA was 100/10, definitely the best book in the series. I still love this series to death and I am grateful for Stephanie for sharing her story with us. I just feel so underwhelmed from the ending, it sooo could have been better. I think the biggest problem is that the story was too complicated. Stephanie should have kept it straightforward>Evangeline is the reincarnation of Jack's true love and the first fox, Apollo is the bad guy, Jacks fights to be with Evangeline, they win and get married. Not everything has to be sophisticated. It’s okay if stories are predicatable, they just need to be good.

BEST YGO GIRL: Round 3, Group D
Match 4
Tumblr media
please use this as an opportunity to say why you like a character, not why you don't.
Propaganda under the cut!
Aki Izayoi
An abuse victim who isn't the perfect passive figure but gets to work through her complicated feelings about power, agency, and family. Even with Yusei's help, she is the star of the show when she learns to control her powers and reconciles with her father, it is so fun that a ygo heroine gets to take such an antagonistic role bu not be shamed for her anger
please vote for my main girl, aki izayoi. aki was led to believe she was a monster from a young age by her father, who treated her powers like it made her unworthy of love. as a result, divine was able to swoop in and take advantage of aki's low self esteem. for years, aki believed herself unworthy of love and was molded into a living weapon at the hands of authority figures in her life. she was taken advantage of, and thus when she finally comes face to face with yusei, she refuses to believe he could provide her with unconditional friendship. who would want to be around a monster, after all? aki also nearly beats yusei TWICE in a duel, bringing it down to a single turn difference. she comes toe to toe with him, and it truly is the result of who dueled better. she remains a fierce duelist, btw. the second season, aki gets her duel runner license, and immediately nearly beats the ass of a tournament winning turbo duelist - to the point where once again, a single card is the deciding factor. that's right: she nearly won. if not for a single trap card, aki izayoi would've won. a fierce duelist who was shaped into a loving, caring woman despite years of being beaten down by the world: aki izayoi. vote for her now on your phones.
Shizuka Kawai
Shizuka is obviously very sweet, supportive and positive, but she is also stubborn and brave as hell. There's the obvious ones: Ripped off her post-surgery bandages after being functionally blind in order to jump into deep water to save her brother without a second thought! Perfect win record, won her first ever duel despite having no clue how to play!
But there's a couple really great less obvious character moments as well:
First off, her message to Jounouchi before Duelist Kingdom: It's heavily implied they hadn't spoken in a long time since their parents' divorce. But Shizuka, a very sheltered pre-teen, was the first one to break the silence and reach out to her big brother - even though they were likely deliberately being kept apart by their mother, who seems to believe Jou is a bad influence on his sister. Jou and Shizuka's mom has likely been repeating this narrative to Shizuka growing up, too: "Your brother is no-good just like your dad. Your brother is dangerous. Your brother is a bad influence" etc, etc. But this doesn't stop her from secretly deciding to contact Jou. Shizuka had no idea when reaching out that he'd do something over-the-top like try and win money for her operation. She just wanted to talk to her estranged sibling and update him on her life, including her illness, which was probably really scary for her to talk about.
Second: This kid breaks out of a hospital, still blind and wearing post-surgical bandages after a major operation, to see her brother. She meets all of her brother's friends in one go and immediately is like "Whatever I'll get in your car strange woman, just get me to Katsuya!!" Then after the pier duel she's still so determined to offer what support she can that she gets on the giant aircraft of a well-known local maniac without hesitation. The first things she sees after years of declining eyesight are: her brother nearly drowning, literal gods being summoned, someone she clearly idolizes as a big sister getting Shadow Game'd, Honda getting dropped into a pit of lava, her brother ACTUALLY dying - and she remains kind, cheerful and brave throughout it all.
Third: Despite her clear idolization and respect of Jounouchi, she actually doesn't just thoughtlessly go along with what he says all the time! Several times in the anime, when she feels Jou is being impulsive, stubborn or unkind, she'll call him out on it. A notable example is in Virtual World when Jounouchi suggests they should just leave Kaiba and Mokuba to go off alone. Shizuka firmly tells him "No, that's not the right thing to do," and tries to go off after the Kaibros all by herself. This is really brave as hell, especially seeing as she's evidently prepared to go against ALL of her brother's cool older friends despite being young, a bit naive/inexperienced, and has seen a staggering amount of dangerous things happen to them all up to that point.
Fourth: Virtual World Duel. Yes she has a miniature crisis after seeing her brother's best friend get dropped into lava. But she recovers and wins the duel with a religious-iconography-power-lesbian card. Love that for her.
Fifth: Shizuka is the only character in the entire series to stand in front of Seto Kaiba and say to his face "human lives are more important than card games." And she's not even one of Yuugi's core friend group, who's seen Kaiba at his most vulnerable. From her perspective, this is not only a giant tall scary-looking older guy with the bitchiest resting face this side of the Pacific, he's also one of the most powerful individuals in Domino City (possibly in Japan.) Kaiba is a well-known public figure who Shizuka had previously probably only seen on the news for things like staggering wealth, general lunacy, and patricide. AND YET, she's the one who marches her little self up to him and tells him to land his damn blimp and get Bakura some medical care. (It kind of works, too! Kaiba is difficult and annoying to all of them and implies he doesn't care if Bakura dies, but after Shizuka makes her appeal, only THEN does he admit that KaibaCorp has excellent trained medical staff on board.)
Sixth: Pulls a truly disturbed prank with Mai and then laughs in the face of her brother's devastation. We love a weird kid with an extremely questionable sense of humor. She's definitely fine after all the Horrors(TM) she's witnessed. Probably.
Anyways vote Shizuka she's a fucking great character and the fandom has been SLEEPING on her!!!!

Only Hope - By Choseung (7/10)
Tumblr media
Time travel is a hard concept to work with. It sounds easy and simple to understand on paper, but it's boring and the incoming twist here isn't enough. The art is wonderful. I like the two main characters, but the plot is sub-par. Sadly, that's the most important component.
The first three chapters are incredible. Eunhye is the unhappy daughter of a wealthy man. She's an adult with her own life. Her father hates her for unknown reasons, and her stepmother is a stereotypical jealous hag.
Tumblr media
Her father is dying, and he still wants nothing to do with her. Eunhye has never had a normal family, and now she never will. Her own father doesn't want her to come to his funeral. Her husband, Dojin, gets hit by the evil stepmother character when he tries to pay his respects.
Tumblr media
Eunhye defends her husband. She's not a spineless little girl. She lived in an abusive household, and now that she's out she has healthy boundaries. It was incredibly refreshing to see. It is sad that Eunhye will never have a relationship with her father, but we get to see how she became a strong adult in her introductory scene.
Tumblr media
Dojin is a doctor. He's successful. It's implied that she is too. Their marriage is perfect. They get along great, and Dojin is very attractive on top of being a doctor. The beginning of their romance was like the first chapter of a novel.
Dojin seems too perfect.
Tumblr media
Eunhye goes to their cabin. Dojin is late. She finds a basement room full of criminal things, and a horrible video. It's a man, begging for his life, before someone off screen sets him on fire. She knew nothing. Dojin made the secret basement without her knowledge. Then, fire burns their romantic cabin to the ground. Then, a masked man slashes Eunhye open. Eunhye grabs his pant leg and demands to know who he is, before she dies.
She fights until she can't move anymore.
I was hyped. Absolutely loved Eunhye as the main character at this point.
Tumblr media
Eunhye wakes up. It's the one year anniversary of her mother's death. It's also the day she met Dojin. He's sweet and kind, and he helps her. Their romantic meeting is the same as before, but she's afraid. Dojin is somehow involved with her death. The evidence in the basement points to that. Especially the video, which proves that Dojin is somehow connected to gang related crime.
Tumblr media
I think Dojin is a great potential villain. It kind of doesn't matter if he killed his wife. What does matter is his true self. Is Dojin a criminal? A serial killer? Does he enjoy his grim work? Why did he marry someone outside of his world? Was Eunhye just a paycheck? Did he put a ring on it to get cash? Is she a target? How does his career as a doctor fit into his daily life?
Fascinating questions. So many of them too. I expected Eunhye to start fake dating Dojin, who was clearly interested in her.
She doesn't.
Tumblr media
Eunhye stalks Dojin, even though she knows he's dangerous. He catches her, which is a given because SHE already knows he's not a normal guy! Not normal guys notice when they're being tailed! Ugh. It gets worse. Within the first ten chapters Eunhye tells him, to his face, that she had a prophetic dream about him. One where he dies, and she wants to protect him, even though they are complete strangers in this timeline.
Eunhye KNOWS that telling him she knows the future is stupid. The idea is presented as a joke at first....but then she does it...and Dojin goes along with it. This plot direction kills alot of the tension.
Most of the plot becomes:
"I know what will happen today and I have to stop it."
Not:
"Did my husband kill me or cause my death with his shady business?"
Tumblr media
Dojin has a sad past. His house was set on fire and his mother was killed maybe? He ended up in the hospital as a kid. He's a jaded and violent guy, but he's also a doctor with a good personality. We still don't know what parts of him are real.
Tumblr media
Eunhye comforted him when he lost everything. This points towards the yandere route. Dojin can't remember her well, because he was traumatized, but it was definitely her. The timeline is confusing and not in a fun way. Dojin doesn't recognize Eunhye yet. We only get hints, but how did any of this kill Eunhye? It's interesting, but the fake dating route would have been a million times better. It's cute that Eunhye wants to trust her loving husband, but the plot is alot less thrilling...because most of the scenes are just Eunhye waiting for something interesting to happen.

The fact that Brad and Janet sing their big romantic duet in a graveyard and a funeral serves three main points, in my opinion. Most directly, it quickly communicates to the audience that this is not just a straightforward love song in a straightforward musical.
By having them run around and sing while seemingly totally oblivious to their grim surrounding, doodle on the church’s doors and barge in on a stranger's funeral - it communicates to the audience that we’re not supposed to take this song totally seriously and we are supposed to find Brad and Janet at least kinda mockable and worthy of criticism in their ‘wholesomeness’.
Secondly, it foreshadows that Brad and Janet’s seemingly happy engagement is doomed to end by the end of this story. Especially as the size of the coffin implies this is a funeral for a child. Brad and Janet’s engagement is also going to ‘die’ very very young.
Thirdly, I think it indicates that the engagement itself is something foreboding and that the whole song is less happy than it appears on the surface. Like the backdrop of the song is betraying some of Brad and Janet’s true feelings.    Especially note how the song starts on the Ominous Thunder that hints on the storm to come.
I mean, I don’t think that it’s a brand-new-super-hot-take to point out that Brad and Janet were probably repressing a lot of their own desires to fit in with the conservative heteronormative culture they came from - and that what happened within the Frankenstein’s Place was less about them being corrupted by a totally outside force and more about them letting out already-existing repressed parts of themselves.
So, even if Brad and Janet truly love each other, I think that, deep down, the happy happy heteronormative monogamous wedded life this song celebrates is not the kind of love they would want to have together. That’s the importance of Janet beating the other girls to the brides’ bouquet. Due to the superstition that whoever catches the bouquet will be the next to marry, that kinda puts pressure on Brad to propose to ‘fulfil’ that belief. Would he have proposed to Janet that day if the bouquet didn’t make him feel obliged to do so?
And I think at least some of Janet’s eagerness to marry is probably more about, well, Janet lived all her life in a very sexually repressed culture, but she is also secretly very very horny. Becoming a married woman was the only way she was allowed to have sex without being labeled as some sort of, well, Slut.  I think that she was eager to finally be able to have sex while still being a Good Christian GirlTM.
This aspect of marriage is also referenced in the Ralph and Betty Wedding.
Tumblr media
And note how the implication here is that the wedding is what Betty wanted and the sex is just something Ralph gets from her in return. Janet’s environment was such that even in the one condition in which she was allowed to have sex, the idea of her own sexual desires was underplayed - she was just there to fulfill Brad's. Even though, deep down, Janet is clearly the Hornier of the two.
But in Brad and Janet’s life, marriage - and all the specific gender roles and sexual expectations that came with it, was seen as inevitability, maybe on the same level that death is an actual inevitability. Brad and Janet could try and make a happy production out of it, but the backdrop betrays their true feelings about it.

Your favorite and least favorite things about ror and pjo?
PJO
favorite things:
pretty much the entirety of the first series!
i love how rick was able to perfectly (imo) entertwine the ancient greek world with the modern world
i especially love how most of percy's journey was similar to the ancient greek heroes' journeys in the myths
THE FACT THAT PERCY REJECTED GODHOOD TO TRY AND GIVE DEMIGODS AND MINOR GODS A BETTER LIFE HE'S SO SWEET I LOVE HIM OMG
no seriously, i LOVE how instead of being selfish and becoming a god, he tried to actually fix the root of the problem so no other child would ever go through the same things his generation of demigods went through THATS HOW YOU END AN OPPRESSIVE REGIME, I'M PROUD OF YOU PERCY
everything about the last olympian. he writes war and battle SO well, my heart was literally pounding throughout the whole book!!!
the character deaths.... they gutted me, but they were executed so well
least favorite things:
the gods weren't very similar to the mythical counterpart.... like how pjo!poseidon was a chill, mostly nice guy whereas in the myths he was a rapist psycho.... and how pjo!ares was implied to be abusive towards clarisse whereas in the myths ares respects women and killed his daughter's rapist (tho i get why he couldn't do that since this is a kid's book)
the entirety of heroes of olympus 💀
no seriously, i didn't like any of it
the lost hero and the son of neptune were okay, but after that things started getting messy. probably because of how many main characters he had to write about
the plot was very very.... weird??? especially around the part where they were looking for the physician's cure. a side quest took up a major chunk of the book
BLOOD OF OLYMPUS WAS SHITTY OMG
the final battle against gaea was so lame!!!! the seven weren't even fighting here, only a few of them were!!! the fact that piper was able to put her to sleep too even though rick literally wrote a list of ways charmspeak would fail AND GAEA CHECKED EVERY ONE OF THEM???? yet piper succeeded anyway???
no seriously, i was expecting the last olympian kinda shit in blood of olympus, but i got NOTHING
rick's shitty view of 'feminism' wasn't feminism at all, it was more misandry (the hunt) and piper ESPECIALLY had some glaring internalized misogyny
i get he was trying to make her a feminist icon, but he really failed with piper. piper clearly hated femininity and looked down feminine girls AND SHE WAS PROVEN RIGHT because 99% of her enemies (major or minor) were girls that were comfortable with their femininity and rick had her triumph over them every time
rick's favoritism over piper. her charmspeak worked on opponents that it shouldn't have worked on (gaea and khione), every other female character suddenly gets downgraded whenever she's around (drew, aphrodite, annabeth, the entire fucking aphrodite cabin, etc), none of her actual flaws were called out (this is mostly because rick never intended for her internalized misogyny and obsessiveness to be her flaws, they were created by accident and noticed by the readers).... and you get the point
ROR
favorite things:
the character designs are sooooo 🤤
99% of the characters have 8 pack abs OR MORE
THE GORE!!!! WOOHOO I LOVE THE VIOLENCE (in the manga at least.... the anime censored it smh 🤦‍♀️)
there isn't really much worldbuilding yet but i love what we've been given so far!!!!
the fact that the mangaka was able to create a universe where ALL the gods of ALL the pantheons are in it and it doesn't look like a hot mess??? much respect!
THE FACT THAT FAMOUS HUMANS ARE FIGHTING TOO!!!
THE MATCHUPS ARE AMAZING LIKE IMAGINE BEING TOLD NIKOLA TESLA WAS FIGHTING THE DEVIL
the death scenes!!! yes they're tragic, but they're so well done!!!! the way lu bu's men rallied up to join him in niflhel, the way every human grieved when adam, their father, died, how tesla's last words were to give hope to humanity, I LOVED IT ALL 😭😭😭
least favorite things:
i really need them to explain wtf a demigod is cuz i get how humans are considered demigods (they're humans with the strength of a god) BUT I REALLY NEED AN EXPLANATION ON HOW THE VALKYRIES ARE CONSIDERED DEMIGODS 💀
the gods were.... kinda underwhelming. they seemed more like superhumans than actual gods. poseidon didn't use his water powers? hades didn't summon the dead? no lightning from zeus? most of the gods were fighting physically and not using their actual powers which was kinda...... meh
the list of fighters for both humans and gods.... the gods literally have 5 greeks and 3 norse gods whereas the humans have 4 japanese fighters 🫤 i'd like a lil more diversity
the way the fight scenes are animated in the anime..... they are so bad..... like SO bad 😭😭 my jaw dropped when i watched them
the censoring of the violence and gore in the anime 😔

if u ever wanna complain abt blue flag id be all ears. ive had it recommended a ton but never got around to hear abt it
ah, the old blue flag. every few months i remember this manga and i feel pure anger deep in my heart. long post incoming! i know a lot of people like it so i'll preface this by saying that this is my opinion, you can still like it, let's hold hands and read manga together. anyway, blue flag. my main problem is that it feels like something that was written for heterocis people to sympathize with lgbt's people's existence instead of something that actually included lgbt's people's experiences and opinions. all you have to know is that there's this scene where a character makes a list of lgbt songs or smth like that and one of them is shake it off by taylor swift. yeah. i said this yesterday but it's not like i think it's bad for lgbt manga to be educational, that's totally ok. there are works like 'i think our son is gay' that are very good at that. the whole plot of the manga is that a mom finds out her son is gay and it follows how she learns about sexuality, lgbt issues, etc etc (it's also told from her pov). its purpose clearly is to be educational for a non-lgbt audience. with blue flag... it felt like they were trying to explain lgbt 101 to me and failing. it raised a lot of questions about sexuality that in the best of cases the author couldn't give an answer to (and sometimes it's ok not to, but we weren't dealing with queer theory here, the question was like. do gay ppl deserve rights), and in the worst of cases just fumbled the resolution completely. the best example for that is how a character's outing got handled. spoilers here ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️ but man. the mc gets outed by his homophobic friend, later it is revealed that this friend is homophobic bc he got assaulted by a man (wow gay predator trope, never seen that before), and the manga could've taken 10000 different directions to deal with that but what did the author decide to do? yeah -> homophobia is just a different opinion! we have to understand where both sides are coming from <3 hell no. die. (it was awful and heartbreaking to read btw). more big spoilers ‼️ another thing that made me violent (and i mean it), was how the manga handled another character's sexuality. one of the main characters, a girl whose name i can't remember, spent the entire manga rightfully struggling with coming to terms with the fact that she liked women. she explicitly said she couldn't like men if i remember correctly. well. here comes a time skip. she's married to a man. how. what. and ofc i'm not saying she can't be bi, but she was clearly written as a lesbian. why on earth is she married to a man then i wanna KILLLLLLLLL. anyway the ending also sucked. in the time skip it's implied the main boys were dating (idek how we got there, ig we skipped the entire sexuality journey of one of them) but it was told from a 1st person pov for some reason so we literally don't see them together (i wonder if it was too gay for shonen jump). when this manga was ongoing, even when it ended, people were promoting it to hell and back, saying how good the "representation" was. i assure you i never saw a manga that centered lgbt characters be talked about THAT much, except maybe shimanami tasogare. it seriously was huge. it was a lot of people's first approach to lgbt manga as well. why people think lgbt manga peaked with ao no flag is beyond me. last year a mutual made a post talking about it and they made a great point which was that blue flag would've never gotten that popular if it wasn't a shonen jump manga and i totally agree. and i'll be bitter about it being licensed where i live while shimanami tasogare isn't until the day i die. but yeah that's a summary of my issues with it. obviously i don't recommend it lol

anyone wanna hear a wrong theory?
Hello! It's the girl reading TLT wrong again!
I was thinking I might as well go over why I'm convinced that Gideon is possessing the sword. I do this acknowledging fully and readily that I'm probably more than half wrong, but I think my reasoning is fairly solid so for my own posterity and other's enjoyment, let's go.
(evidence at hand: Gideon The Ninth up till they first make planetfall and sunglasses get pulled out. Assorted osmosis tidbits. Harrow The Ninth up till mid chapter 21)
First, why I think the sword's haunted:
Look, nothing that wants to be bathed in arterial blood, casts the evil eye over entire rooms, and has an incredibly traumatized girl protecting it from thieves isn't haunted. I'm sorry, that's the rules. Additionally, this book made a point early on to make sure we knew how revenants work. You don't put these things next to each other if you don't want an audience to link them.
Second, why I think it's Gideon in there:
We're told three things that naturally get haunted by revenants: people they cared about, grave goods (stuff they cared about in life), and their murder weapons. If it's Gideon, at least two of these things are very readily available. Harrow, and her own two-hander. If there was actually a two-hander in the Sleeper's coffin (which I really doubt), that potentially becomes three things. If there was actually a Sleeper, anyways.
Now, I *do* suspect that Harrow's possessed. The second person perspective in the main timeline is incredibly suspicious, since it implies that while she's answering to "Harrowhark Nonagesimus" and is seemingly attached enough to the name to make its use a major element in probably-banging Ianthe, she isn't *actually calling herself that in her head.* Of course, given all the "reborn as myself" stuff and how incredibly messed up her life in general and during the events of this book specifically are, she might also just be dissociated as hell.
Besides, as a lyctor, she's clearly *supposed* to be possessed by her cavalier. And however the process of taking a loved one for parts and an auto defense system actually goes, it's obviously went funky as all get out with her.
It seems like a cavalier is supposed to be their lyctor's sword, at least on a metaphorical level. Knightly service, the godking calling his lyctors his fingers, and them apparently being supposed to turn into a lyctor's limbic system during the fusion. This being a very literal "hey, you're Her Sword now, have fun!" Situation is a logical extreme of that, and would probably piss Gideon off to no end at the beginning of the book. Of course, I know that GtN is a romance, so there's a non-zero chance that this has changed, which only makes it funnier.
Whoever it is playing Transistor at Harrow, Harrow has some *strong* feelings about it. They mostly aren't positive, but she's still incredibly, INCREDIBLY attached to her sword in often very literal ways. That implies it's someone she at least used to know.
Lastly, other people it might be:
Any weapon from the Ninth is gonna be a hand me down, and Ortus the Lyctor clearly super, SUPER wants it. Perhaps it's somebody he used to know?
I'd suspect Evil Femme Jesus, but it seems like she can get around just fine without being a hunk of metal, and Harrow has a pretty different feeling relationship with her that predates the sword owning.
A Memory of a Much Lesser Self? Harrow's clearly got a couple of those floating around...

Miller's Girl Review
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a Tumblr movie. I'm really not even joking when I say, it's like the writer scrolled through TC Tumblr, compiled all the aesthetic pictures and flipped through a thesaurus. Actually, even that feels a bit Tumblr-y. That's not to say it was distinctly bad. It was very pretty to look at, and the music was fun. Very atmospheric and tense up until the halfway point. There's a buildup and very fast crash "back to reality" after the climax (pun intended) of the film. I'm going to give my analysis of the two main problems of the film, and how to enjoy it regardless.
Problems:
The movie kept forgetting it was set in a high school, so should have just been a college movie. I understand that it's more illicit and taboo if it's a high school senior and a professor, but they go out of their way to remind you she's an adult and put her in classrooms that look oddly college-like (like a small liberal arts college). I could very easily imagine this being a small seminar class for dedicated literature students. This would be a more competitive group, and would make sense for her to have read all the course material before the class starts ( don't remember even our best students doing that for high school and I was in a very competitive academic programme). And this would make more sense for Cairo's whole, '"I live alone in my big ancestral mansion, where my parents are never around," and "I've seen my prof in non-academic settings." It's a bit less common, but students and teachers have been known to run into each other in smaller college towns, I've known profs who openly meet students outside of the classroom, in tangentially academic settings.
Cairo's whole scorned lover routine doesn't make any sense. But it's clearly the part of the film the writer feels most strongly about. It's supposed to be an "oh shit" moment. But falls flat really quickly because it demands you to believe the character that had been fairly nice and level-headed for most of the story turns on a head at a moment's notice. She turns against her friend, against the person she has a crush on, and becomes very cold and distant. Cairo begins the story, eager to please, and led by her friend Winnie. She adores her professor, obviosuly. But then bizarrely hands in erotic fanfiction about her and her teacher. She says "You erase the lines then get shocked when I cross one without knowing." But Cairo... you're still a student, regardless of what relationship you think you both have, on what planet would handing in erotica be appropriate at the high school level. So either you have to believe she was blind to the consequences of her piece, or she knew all along and wanted a way to test and punish her teacher. Either she's distinctly naive and in love and then distinctly and suddenly conniving and purposeful, or she's been planning his downfall from the beginning. Neither of these are satisfying or realistic character arcs. Especially for a high school senior. The author doesn't seem to have compassion for Cairo as a naive subject, a young adult overcome in a taboo situation. So it feels as though she's supposed to be a villain, not merely naive.
Maybe the last point could have been fixed if it was only implied that she was purposefully vindictive if the first half of the movie was from her perspective and the second half was from Mr. Miller's where we only get his belief in her cruelty, rather than the truth of it. I think that may have fixed the movie. But it would take away the "he's a coward and he needs to be punished for being mediocre" evil villain speech.
How to enjoy:
Just pretend Cairo is a university/ College student. It just makes more sense for the plot, there are only a few moments that even feel very "high school" and only because of the background. Even Winnie working in a restaurant feels very college-y. It just makes more sense in that setting.
Embrace the TC Tublr-ness of it all. I keep saying in all my reviews that it feels like something I would have written at 16. I have such a hard time believing the writer of the movie came up with the idea for it anywhere after high school. It's like she had a really cool idea and then just held on to it for years. So just go back into that headspace, and enjoy the cringe of it.

So George is autistic right? That's not just me?
I'm assuming you're talking about Lockwood & Co? Yeah, George is clearly autistic (at least in the TV version, I'm about to read the book as soon as I have time). They don't say it on screen, but it's obvious that this is what they were going for. The way he cleans when he gets stressed, his talk about figurative time intervals and so much more…
The only real question is whether he's meant to be autistic, or whether he's meant to be "weird" and that accidentally ended up as portraying him as on the spectrum, like so many shows do (Big Bang Theory being the most famous example). Personally, I think in the case of George, it was absolutely intentional.
Being autistic is not just a thing that happens in funny scenes for George, it defines a lot of his character. I think it's implied that this is why he was unhappy in the corporate world of Fitts. It's also notable how long it takes for him to warm up to Lucy initially, until she finally starts to understand him—and at that point he turns around and fully accepts her as his close friend, something he says on screen.
This is really a key trait of his: It's clearly implied that people find George difficult to get along with (including Lucy at first), and that's led to him being very isolated. But when people who make the effort (Lockwood, Lucy after a while), he is immensely happy to have them as friends. Joplin recognises that and manages to exploit that for her own benefits, Flo tries the same but for his benefit.
George is autistic, and that's fundamental to his character, how he sees the world and how he interacts with others. And the show makes it clear that this does not make him weird or wrong; or at least not weirder than a traumatised sassy girl who never smiles, or a suicidal boy whose dream is to become the next Christian Lindner.
I really like what the show did with George, my only criticism is that we didn't get enough of that, and in particular not enough of the main three hanging out around the kitchen table.

Have some noodling Oracle/Unnamed/Lia thoughts because Touchstarved consumes me and there is no end in sight:
So when I saw the three origins for the MC in Touchstarved, and I saw that one of them was an Oracle, I knew that was going to be my main no matter what - because when I see the word oracle, I always think of 300 by Frank Miller (or the movie by Zac Snyder) and I have SO many feelings about that (under a cute for tw: rape/non-con stuff)
I should say straight up, I love 300. I also hate it. I have a lot of mixed feelings about Frank Miller’s work in general, because he’s such a titan of industry, and there was a time when I genuinely did love and devour a lot of his stuff. I am older now, and a bit more media/genre savvy, and I know now that a lot of the mixed feelings I have about his work is the knowledge that his stories are not for people like me and never were for people like me
Case in point, the oracles in 300
For those not familiar with the story, King Leonidas of Sparta goes to the Ephors (magistrates, essentially) to ask for their permission to go to war against the soon to be invading Persians. The Ephors consult the Oracle, and this is depicted as a heavily drugged young woman in flimsy, almost non-existent clothing writhing around in a drug-induced stupor. It’s heavily implied that the Ephors rape her while she is in this state, and Leonidas finds them disgusting for this, but is still bound by tradition and culture to honor their leadership even if he does not abide by their ruling
And in both the comic and the film, there’s such a vibe of “oh no look at this poor girl, who is so insanely sexual and writhing about sensually as if to tempt men, but who is also clearly doing this against her will and is drunk to the point of incoherence. It’s so sad that’s she basically being raped to death by these disgusting old freaks. Oh well, I’m sure that’s none of my business”
And that hit me, so hard, back in the days when wee young Defira devoured these stories. I didn’t know why it was hitting me so hard (I mean, I knew it was disgusting and I hated it) but I know now that coupled with the treatment of the one or two other women in the entire story (also raped), it was basically a big flashing neon sign pointing me to the door to tell me this wasn’t a story where people like me got to be more than set dressing. We were consumable props. Nothing else. Not even people.
Fast forward to now, with Touchstarved promising an adult, monstrous horror setting that plays with queer stories and queer notions of alienation and self-loathing and, let’s be honest, monstrous sexuality and sex, when I saw the Oracle origin I knew that was the one for me.
Because that girl in 300 has lived rent free in my mind for DECADES. What if the Oracle got a chance to be more than a prop, more than a set dressing? What if she was never rescued, like she was just shrugged and abandoned to her tormentors in the story, but what if she got a chance to be monstrous and turn the torment back on them? What does that girl become, once she’s escaped from the only place she’s ever known, a place of isolation and pain and horror at the hands of humans? What does she believe about monstrosity, when faced with people and creatures who defy classification, as opposed to the mundane humans who caged her and abused her and raped her and used her for the own financial gain?
Ophalia, or Lia, is my answer to those questions. Her backstory is bleak, but the setting gives me leave to play in that bleak, miserable space. She’s frightened and she’s angry and she’s so stupidly trusting and naive because she doesn’t know how to be a human! She doesn’t know how to relate to other people! She is monstrous because of her curse, but she’s lived a monstrous life and I’m excited to play in that space

With the most recent installments to the fnaf franchise, the discussion of Cassie's father has become a main topic. The common theory is that Cassie's father is "the Bonnie bro". I'm personally against this theory and here's why
(Note: please take everything I say with a grain of salt I don't know the lore like the back of my hand and this is all just my opinion)
1. Satisfaction
The main reason I'm against the theory is because it's not narratively satisfying. This franchise is defined by its exclusively when it comes to characters. They always want to recycle the same characters we've always had. "I always come back" is literally one of the most iconic lines from the series. So to me, to have some random, no name, only mentioned once, less than a minute of screen time, ass dude become an important figure? Hell no.
2. Background info
In order to identify Cassie's father, we must use the information that is given by Cassie. Cassie is a racially ambiguous girl with some dark features who is at least a decade old. She says during Ruin that her dad works for fazbear, has had a deep love for the company, and it's also implied that she hasn't seen him in awhile. In help wanted 2, the player is an older ("hey, you look like you got kids") and masculine (listen to the burp sounds when eating food) worker for fazbear. All three of those fit the bill for Cassie's father. So if I don't think it's Bonnie bro, who do I think it is?
3. It's Micheal
In help wanted 2, there's three (maybe even 4) different time periods we play through. We play through sister location, security breach, and ruin (the additional 4th being fnaf 6). Clearly even though help wanted 2 is supposed to a fazbear employee training sim, it's so much more since the games seem to transcend time by going back and forth between past and future. So that means the player has lived through all of those times. We know for a FACT that Micheal is the main character for sister location. In fact, there ARE no other human characters in sister location besides the dead technicians (supporters of the Bonnie bro theory suggest that Cassie's dad still worked at sister location despite this). There are also multiple voice lines in the game that are extremely important! There's the stuff mystic hippo says, there's baby's lines, and "why are you so special".
Baby says "I feel bad for you" , "I like it here. It's safe, safe forever.", "i recognize you", and "you should have known I'd find you". These lines are PERSONAL. This is NOT stuff she's saying to someone she saw years ago at birthday party or to a random worker that was at sister location. This is her BROTHER, whom she has a hard history with. Why is the player so special? Because it's Michael, and he's always been important.
Michael, the first born, the one responsible for the death of CC. Michael, the one who went location to location, trying to undo the sins of his father. It's Michael that's always been the main character.
Michael also fits the bill for Cassie's dad. He's an older, masculine guy who has a history with working for fazbear, and if we're looking at how Michael looks in the bite of 1983, he and Cassie look similar. (Meaning Michael has dark features like tan skin, brown hair, dark eyes. Of course tho, it doesn't really matter what Michael looks like since Cassie could just look a lot like her other parent. Michael is also canonically white so-)
In the pizza Plex, there's a recreation of Michael's room from sister location. It's not the real room, since there's no evidence that Michael's house was built near sister location, or that sister location and fnaf 6 were one in the same. Micheal's room isn't found underneath the pizza Plex where fnaf 6 was, but in the main levels of the building. His room is also altered. The door is smaller, the show on the screen is different, and there's a message on the wall. If Michael isn't an active player at this point, why is his room here. No one else besides him would recognize that room. This also proves that Micheal was somewhat around during security breach, since that is the only time we see this room.
With that being said, let's move on.
4. Counterpoints
It is heavily stressed that Cassie's dad likes Bonnie. Michael is often associated with foxy, since he would attack CC with a foxy mask on. However, he's only associated with foxy in fnaf 4, and that's it. I don't think he would continue to associate with it decades after. Bonnie was always William's favorite and the rabbit is always associated with his evilness and empire. It's unlikely that Micheal would associate with something so connected to his father. There's two things I say to this. 1: it could be that Micheal doesn't like Bonnie/is impartial but says he does to Cassie since she's a kid and he's her dad. If little Cassie asks her dad, who's your favorite animatronic, he's gonna pick one. By choosing to stay so close to fazbear, he has to somewhat open his heart to the company a bit post the defeat of Afton. 2: when you look at the Bonnie mask in the hidden chest of PQ4 and the AR Bonnie mask in Ruin, the masks are red underneath the purple. The foxy mask is red.
At this point in the story, Micheal is "dead". He died in the fnaf 6 fire. However, given that baby, William, and others have clearly come back after the fire, who's to say Micheal can't come back as well?
So is Michael Cassie's dad? Idk, but I think there's some real compelling stuff.

Rather than repeat the same speech about how Mabel really isn’t as selfish/unnecessary as people make her out to be (or at least, she’s no more selfish than the rest of the Pines family, who are all delightfully flawed individuals), I’m making a list of issues within the show that would have NOT been able to be solved without her: Portal Activation: No one else trusted Stan in that moment, and Mabel ONLY trusted him after he said please. Without her, Ford would’ve still been lost to the Multiverse. Stan’s Memory: Blah blah blah, she ‘started’ the apocalypse (Bill started it, but god forbid we blame the right person or anything), but it was her scrapbook (and Waddles, her pet pig) who kickstarted the remembering process for Stan. Also that ties back to The Time Traveler’s Pig, and how Mabel getting Waddles was clearly the ‘right’ choice (as if there were any question about that if you think about it for more than five seconds). Without her, Stan would still be missing his memory. And don’t say ‘Well, the apocalypse wouldn’t have happened either!’ Bill was gonna do whatever it took to make Weirdmageddon happened, with or without her.
Pacifica’s ‘Redemption’ (or at least the start of it in The Golf War): I know we saw more of it in Northwest Mansion Mystery with Dipper, but it started in The Golf War and it started with Mabel. Without that little kickstart, who knows if Pacifica would’ve gone on to make the right choice further down the line.
Waddles: Once again reminding people to take off their Dipper-Main-Character glasses for five seconds and realize he was never going to get with Wendy, so who actually cares if he ‘gives her up’ for the sake of his sister’s happiness (not implying that she was ever something he owned, but details). And again, Waddles proved to be part of the thing to kickstart Stan’s memory recollection by the end so that pig is IMPORTANT.
Getting Bill Out Of Dipper’s Body: Okay yes, she shouldn’t have taken the journal at all or even THOUGHT to give Bill the journal even for a moment, and also it’s VERY fucked up to think about what Bill was going to do with it after he destroyed the journal. Mabel, I love you, but that was not a good idea in the slightest. But listen, she didn’t know what Bill was going to do. She had NO knowledge of that, and neither did we at that point. Bill was barely a threat at that point, especially after getting defeated in the most humiliating way inside Stan’s mind. He got defeated by kitten fists and synthesized music, I wouldn’t take him that seriously either. But at the end of the day, Mabel still made the right choice and actually got Dipper his body back. And also if she wasn’t around, imagine how much easier it would’ve been for Bill to find the journal quicker and...well, you know. If anything, her taking it as a prop gave him a bit more of a challenge. Mermando: Okay, but people using this scene as a gotcha against Mabel are so stupid. She was helping an INJURED BOY and giving him a way to call to his family while injured, and the thing everyone took from that scene was ‘But Dipper had to give up a chance to hang out with his crush, boohoo boohoo’. Fuck you, and fuck his crush actually. If him crushing on a girl is more important than helping someone in need, then I don’t think Mabel should be considered the selfish one in that situation (I know how hypocritical that sounds, based on the previous entry, but they both made the right choice in each scenario and somehow Mabel still gets blamed for BOTH situations and called selfish. Dip, I love you, but your fans are rancid sometimes).
There’s bound to be more, but this is all I could think of off the top of my head.
