Different people from various backgrounds nowadays are taking cues from organisms in nature and applying those concepts to new technology that is conducive to life

Preserving natural resources

Examples of bio-mimicry are increasing in popularity as we are realizing the importance of sustainability. The aim is to get inspiration from nature and introduce elements of it in our interiors without harming the natural resources. By keeping the concept in mind, interior designers can help reduce the depletion of natural resources by following a sustainable design which can be done by many ways.

Firstly, energy consumption is one of the major contributors to climate change, to save energy spent on lighting; a lot can be done just by picking the right colours. Lighter colours reflect more light, decreasing dependency on artificial light. Window coverings, blinds and shades enable residents to control the building’s temperature in an energy efficient way by opening and shutting them as needed. Als je op zoek gaat naar positieve ontwikkelingen in reactie op de crises van deze tijd zie je dat er veel beweging is. Denk aan Green Deals zoals in de EU, mondiale jongeren bewegingen zoals Fridays for Future, activistische netwerken van Greta Thunberg, Extinction Rebellion en de Sunrise Movement, zich roerende klimaatwetenschappers, rebellerende economen met nieuwe modellen, vernieuwende NGO’s met klimaatrechtszaken, online netwerken als Avaaz, lokale energiecoöperaties, bewegingen rond thema’s als ‘renature’ en ‘rewilding’, nieuwe politieke partijen zoals de Partij voor de Dieren en ga zo maar door. Deze bewegingen hebben ieder een eigen verhaal, domein en aanpak, waarmee ze een rol spelen in allerlei deels ook overlappende netwerkactiviteit. De bewegingen vormen in zekere zin een familie, maar werken niet planmatig samen.

Mijn hypothese is dat er patronen in de verhalen van al deze organisaties en netwerken bestaan en dat er sprake is van convergentie: de verhalen groeien naar elkaar toe. Dit is grofweg het patroon dat ik meen te herkennen:

Alles hangt met alles samen.

De mens is afhankelijk van natuurlijke systemen en in staat die te vernietigen. Dat laatste is wat nu gebeurt.

Een vervullend leven draait om (werken aan) goede relaties met natuurlijke systemen en andere mensen.

De opdracht van de mensheid is de verstoorde relaties met en binnen de natuurlijke en sociale systemen te herstellen.

Mensen zijn (vanwege direct ervaren effecten en belang) het beste in staat dit te doen vanuit de menselijke maat: in het huishouden, de familie en de lokale gemeenschap.

Systemen (inclusief technologie) moeten hier dienstbaar aan worden gemaakt.

Een specifieke vorm van convergentie is het samenkomen van bewegingen rond sociale en ecologische thema’s. Het feit dat deze onbalansen onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn dringt steeds breder door.
