The Great Gorge Playboy Resort’s time was short lived and it was sold in 1981 to new owners who rid themselves of the Playboy name. By 2000, the hotel drastically declined and closed a few years later. The owners closed off about half of the rooms while renting the other half as condominiums. In 2018, it closed for good and became abandoned. Local developers have proposed multiple ideas for redevelopment including a satellite campus for a college, senior housing or a medical center. Some of the property is still used as a golf course today.

I first explored the Great Gorge with my sister in 2010. We randomly decided to go back this past week and it looks almost exactly the same as it did 10+ years ago. The first time we visited, we were promptly yelled at by a man in the building, who I assume was a caretaker of sorts. This time, we were left alone to freely wander. There are dozens of ‘no trespassing’ signs everywhere so to avoid a possible arrest, we stayed outside the building.
