I'm crying laughing, the DVDs are even worse than I remember... Season 1's menus are silent with a single static jpg of the same key character art they use for everything else, and the episodes on the Season 2 discs don't even match what's listed on the box! Absolutely stunning lack of shits given. Truly unparalleled. But I really shouldn't be surprised given... well... everything about how this series has been treated since the very beginning.
Time for a quick ~✨PHANDOM HISTORY LESSON✨~ to give newer/less hyperfixated folks more context for why the graphic novel being as great as it is is such a HUGE deal:
Danny Phantom was one of Nickelodeon's MAIN cartoons, in its time. It was a central pillar. One of the top three or four of their lineup, which is saying something when the competition includes the cultural juggernaut that is Spongebob.
Despite this, and despite its superhero theming making it perfectly marketable, it got basically ZERO official merch.
What little we did get was often ugly and very, very cheap. The dedication at the start of the graphic novel that jokes about collecting the Burger King toys? That's because it was some of the most notable merch the franchise EVER had. (I sadly do not have any of it. There was no BK in my hometown. Here's a pic from the internet, though, to give you an idea.)
Tumblr media
If you think I'm exaggerating about that being the most significant physical merch to come out of the series, consider that the first video game had an entire menu option specifically for the Burger King promotional tie-in:
Tumblr media
That video game, by the way, was one of only two ever based on the show. The first was an adaptation of "The Ultimate Enemy" in the style of a short sidescrolling beat-em-up, and the second was themed around "Urban Jungle" and (as far as I can tell--I've only played the first couple levels) was an arcade-style scrolling shooter. Both were for the Gameboy Advance, and both are...... fine, as far as cash-grabby video game tie-ins to kids' shows go. This was pretty normal for the time, so I suppose we did okay in that department, actually. They're not GOOD, but they're playable and have at least a bit of effort put into them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But besides those two video games (plus a handful of simple, long-defunct Flash games on nick.com)? In the decade and a half since the show ended?
Nothing.
No books, no games, no comics, no web shorts--unless you count mega-crossovers with every other Nicktoon (a la Nicktoons Unite), or soulless promotional material like "Fairly Odd Phantom" (which, trust me, despite being the first new DP animation in over 10 years was not even worth the effort of watching).
...I think there was a limited edition FunkoPop once?
So yeah.
A Glitch in Time is not just the first cool, well-made thing we've seen from the franchise in a while. It's the first THING we've seen since the show. PERIOD. And arguably the first worthwhile supplementary material to EVER come out of the show, depending on how you feel about those GBA games and the Nicktoons crossovers.
This franchise is widely beloved even now, almost 20 years after it first aired, and it feels like that fact is now, finally, FINALLY getting some official recognition.
PLEASE read A Glitch in Time. Tell other people about it. The series--no, the fans--deserve this (and more of this, if the folks in charge see enough of a response and decide to grace us with any followup). It's LONG overdue, but better late than never.

NICKELODEON INTRODUCES ROCK PAPER SCISSORS, DEBUTING FEBRUARY 12, 2024
All-New Animated Series Stars Ron Funches as Rock, Thomas Lennon as Paper and Carlos Alazraqui as Scissors
Exclusive Look at Original Animated Short to Air Christmas Day on Nickelodeon
BURBANK, Calif. – December 19, 2023 – Inspired by the age-old tradition of settling things with your best friends, the game comes to life through the shenanigans of pals Rock, Paper and Scissors in Nickelodeon’s new animated series Rock Paper Scissors, premiering Monday, February 12, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. As the first short picked up for series from Nickelodeon’s Intergalactic Shorts Program, new episodes will continue to air weekdays at 5:30 p.m. (ET/PT) and internationally later in the month.
In Rock Paper Scissors, titular characters, Rock, Paper and Scissors, are a trio of best friends and roommates who lovingly compete over everything in hilarious but mostly wildly absurd ways. Throughout season one, the trio will go to extremes playing hide-and-seek around the world, running from the birthday police, defending the world from an alien invasion, going head-to-head with the Rat Bros and more.
Nickelodeon’s brand-new animated comedy stars Ron Funches (Trolls, Trolls Band Together) as Rock, the member of the trio with the biggest heart and moral compass; Thomas Lennon (Zoey 102, 17 Again, Reno 911!) as Paper, the wannabe intellectual who dreams of being a famous inventor; and Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko’s Modern Life, Reno 911!) as Scissors, who acts overly confident and always wants to be cool. The series also stars Melissa Villaseñor (Saturday Night Live) as Pencil, the trio’s incredibly smart neighbor down the hall and Eddie Pepitone (The Muppets, Old School) as Lou, the angry landlord, who is also a garbage can.
Ahead of the series launch, viewers can catch an exclusive look at the Rock Paper Scissors Intergalactic Short, “TV Time,” during the Nickelodeon NFL Nickmas Game on Monday, December 25 at 1:00 p.m. PT / 4:00 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon, where the trio go from fighting over what to watch on TV to being the stars of a successful Broadway musical.
Originally launched in 2019 as a short, Rock Paper Scissors was greenlit for series from Nickelodeon’s Intergalactic Shorts Program. Produced by Nickelodeon Animation, the original Rock Paper Scissors short and series are created, written and executive produced by Kyle Stegina (Robot Chicken) and Josh Lehrman (Robot Chicken), with Conrad Vernon (Sausage Party) and Bob Boyle (The Fairly OddParents) serving as executive producers on the series. Development is overseen by Nickelodeon Animation’s Kari Kim, Vice President of Animation Development and Daniel Wineman, Vice President of Original Animation Development. The series is overseen by Executive in Charge, Jason Oliveri.
For more Rock Paper Scissors, follow the trio on the Nicktoons YouTube channel. In addition to hysterical shorts and clips, full episodes are available to watch now, including “The Birthday Police” and “Paper’s Big Lie.”

The first five MRU universes
So again, gonna be a while before these actually happen because I want to actually write out the process of Piper stealing the HMG research, some of the preparations for Launch Day, and the actual First Activation, and I'm waiting until after I finish the Wonder Arc to write those so I don't end up abandoning it half-finished for months. But I at least wanted to list them out.
Again, universe 1 is basically the Test Universe, while 2-5 are in one batch that gets activated all at once.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Anchor: Link
Supervisor: Trinity
MRUs: 0 and 1
To justify having references to every game (because why wouldn’t it) Time Portals appeared basically everywhere at the same time the Memes did. Also, the Internet Graveyard got merged with the Wild-Era Sacred Realm (which was obviously never visited and is at the current End of the timeline so it doesn’t mess anything up and I can do whatever I want with its aesthetic). Yes, whoever did the setup had to get every Korok seed so the Key Items menu couldn’t canonically update and potentially break something. They did, in fact, get a raise for that.
Hamtor Tubez
Anchor: Doc the Hamtor
Supervisor: GIF
MRUs: 2 and 3
A puzzle game about leading Hamster-like creatures called Hamtors through elaborate tube mazes. Doc is a Mad Scientist and the leader of the Hamtors and is training them for when he will one day TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!!, and there’s other unique Hamtors with special abilities that get introduced throughout the game as new puzzle elements.
Beneath the Faerie Mound
Anchor: Frida
Supervisor: Quazar
MRUs: 4 and 5
A metroidvania about a Changeling who gets Taken Back and has to fight her way out of Faery Country so she can return home. She initially thinks that MRU5 is another faerie who's come to try Taking her again.
The Fairly Oddparents!
Anchor: Timmy Turner
Supervisor: Spreadsheet
MRUs: 6 and 7
Look, making the Pokemon Anime universe part of the AU has set the precedent for also being able to use cartoons as SMG/MRU universes instead of just Games.
Interestingly, the Memes changing things to make the universe more entertaining undid a lot of the later season retcons, especially the Season 9 ones, so a lot of the characters are actually less Mean and Stupid than before. I'm using kid Timmy because he's the Real One so the live action movies and That One Spinoff aren't canon outside of memes, but Nicktoons Unite and its sequels are. So are seasons 9 and 10, 10 because I happen to like Chloe (or at least what she had the potential to be) and 9 because I think it would be funny to have Sparky be The Thing We Never Speak Of among the characters who would know about him.
Janitor of Heart: Stain Rising
Anchor: Rodney Teegan (Champion Form only)
Supervisor: Connectivity
MRUs: 8 and 9
A Magical Girl Beat-'em-Up that's actually a tie-in to an in-universe comic series called Rodney Teegan: Janitor of Heart.
The premise of the comic series is that a girl named Mina Reynolds who is Exactly the sort of person you'd expect to be a Magical Girl Protagonist gets her chance to when her school is attacked by a goop monster (part of an eldritch being known as The Stain) and she finds a magic bracelet containing the Spirit of Heart, Harmony, who chooses her as the Champion of Heart. But, when she tries to transform, some wires get crossed somewhere and the bracelet's power instead flows into Rodney Teegan, a 57-year-old janitor who Mina considers a close friend and who was with her when she found the bracelet. And because the transformation is based on what Mina wanted to look like as a magical superhero, he ends up in the body of a teenage girl with a cute poofy pink outfit. Whoops.
In his Champion form, Rodney has the expected enhanced strength, and can heal very quickly, but his main power is being able to turn cleaning supplies into weapons. It can be something as simple as a broom (in fact his signature weapon is a spear made from a push broom) or as massive and complex as a street sweeper truck. Also, Harmony isn't just a Cute Mascot Character and actually joins in fighting, mainly using super-strong punches and kicks and acting as a healer. Mina still has the bracelet (it actually can't come off at all) and needs to be nearby in order for Rodney and Harmony's powers to work. I have not come up with what Rodney's hero name would be.
Anyway, the game depicts the events of a particularly large Stain attack, this one being an invasion of the whole city, but other than the larger workload it'd be a fairly normal day (since by this point the three of them are more-or-less used to this since it's been a few months) if not for someone new joining the fray. It turns out that Harmony isn't the only Spirit in town, because we're introduced to the Champion of Storms, Thunderbird, and her Spirit partner Zap. Thunderbird has weather control powers, usually favoring lightning, and has a strange transforming mechanical construct that she uses both as a weapon and mobility aid, usually mechanical wings, giant electrified gauntlets, or supersonic skates. She's fighting the stain too, but has apparently decided to start a rivalry with Rodney's team instead of working with them just 'cause. Also, when her machine isn't in Skate Mode it's revealed that she has a translucent magical construct in place of her right leg.
She's eventually revealed to be Hazel O'Brien, one of Mina's classmates. The machine is her wheelchair, which transformed along with her because why wouldn't it?
Interestingly, Connected Cosmos Company were the ones who made the game, and also the ones who came up with Hazel and her Thunderbird persona. However, due to the terms of the licensing agreement the comic's creator owns the rights to the character, and has made sure that the specific designer in CCC who made her gets the royalties for the character being used in the comic (because the game is canon to the comic and Hazel's now a major character), rather than the company as a whole. She's the one character created by CCC that Jayin doesn't own, and I like to think that grates on her, especially because she can't do anything about it without damaging her company's carefully cultivated reputation.
Anyway, as far as the MRU stuff goes, there is one odd quirk about Rodney's Anchor Status: due to only his Champion Form being playable, his Anchor code is dormant in his normal form. Thankfully this doesn't cause problems for the Meme Cycle or the universe's stability, and it doesn't have the same negative effects as actively suppressing his Anchor Tendencies would. It does, however, make it so his Champion form has a different personality (bubbly airhead with occasional violent tendencies) than his normal form, which is very much Not A Thing in canon.

“Back to the Wayne” Kickoff!
What do you get when writers from the world of preschool cartoons and other Nicktoons and the voices of anime, Broadway theater and Aqua Teen Hunger Force team up together? You get Welcome to the Wayne!
The supernatural animated mystery comedy didn’t last long (just two seasons and 30 episodes), typical for any non-hit Nicktoon these days, but in my opinion it should’ve lasted longer. It was entertaining, with clever humor, great visuals, an impressive cast of characters – and, of course, non-stop mystery.
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Wayne was the brainchild of Billy Lopez, the creator of the Nick Jr. series Wonder Pets, related to Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez – perhaps best known as the composers of songs from Disney’s Frozen franchise – and is also the voice of Olly Timbers, the main character and one-third of Team Timbers. Broadway star Dana Steingold voices Olly’s sister Saraline, and Alanna Urbach voices their friend Ansi Molina; she is also best known for her voices on another Nicktoon El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, and is the voice of Mamá Imelda in the Pixar film Coco. The main voice cast of Aqua Teen Hunger Force is also prominent in Wayne: Carey Means, Dana Synder and Dave Willis all have roles in the series. From the anime world, Veronica Taylor, who is the original voice of Ash Ketchum in the early seasons of the Pokémon anime, voices the Spy from Apartment 8-I, the series’ antagonist, who also heads her band of henchmen -- Masterson and Floweshirt -- to stop Team Timbers.
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Wayne also had a large but impressive writers’ unit. While Billy Lopez co-wrote the majority of the episodes, the writers also included Susan Kim (Arthur), Craig Carlisle (Sofia the First), Zach Parez (Gravity Falls – yeah, you read that right!), Johnathan Greenberg (Dinosaur Train, Hey Arnold!), and many more! I’ll make sure that in my episode reviews I’ll include the writers and the series they have worked on prior to Wayne!
As mentioned above, Wayne had a very short life. It was also some sort of abnormality, as it’s a rare Nicktoon that’s also serialized. Another serialized animated series that debuted around this time on Nickelodeon was the Canadian acquisition Mysticons. It didn’t last long, either.
As for the allegations of Wayne being a rip-off of Gravity Falls (for which I will talk about more at the end of this review project), I really do believe it’s its own thing. It’s a whole different presentation compared to what Gravity Falls did. Both series are mystery-oriented, sure, but with Wayne you get non-stop thrills while bringing on the laughs! Plus, the mysteries and wonders of Wayne are on full display in each episode (known as Wayne Phenomena, or WP) -- guaranteed to leave you in awe.
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Wayne also has the rare distinction of a Nicktoon being mainly produced out of Nick Jr.’s offices in New York, with voices, writers and artists for the series based in both New York and Los Angeles (Yowza! Animation of Canada provided the animation. Currently they’re animating the Nicktoon Middlemost Post). The series’ official Instagram account even had the main characters in many New York landmarks in several of its posts. The series is distinctly New York, which I do love, considering that I’m a native of NYC!
Anyway, may we allow the Back to the Wayne review project to commence! Before the series was announced for the eventual 2017 release, there was a series of Web-only shorts divided into chapters that set up the story and the characters. I never watched the shorts, but I do want to rectify that by kicking off the project reviewing them (hopefully, time permitting) beginning later this week! See you then!

I H*ecking Hate Sonic Frontiers
How do I go decades defending Sonic endlessly only to end up in a Twilight Zone episode where everyone not only DOESN’T think this is a new low for the series, but also that it’s one of the best Sonic games ever?! Dude Forces came out coming on 6 years ago and everyone rightfully trashed on that game’s shallow, lazy level design and complete lack of originality riddled with recycled assets.
But the series goes on hiatus for 5 years and comes out with another batch of 30 levels that ALL flat out suck. Forces had 30 levels and 5 of them were green hill and 5 of them were chemical plant. But in frontiers 10 of them are green hill and 8 are Chemical Plant. It’s not even just that they’re reusing these level themes AGAIN. But that they’re less than a minute long, and are so shallow and worthless that they don’t even try to reach the incredibly muted “highs” of Forces. Frontiers levels unironically make Forces look like an exciting ambitious game in comparison. How do you have such an embarassing showing and get this jaded fanbase on your side?
Well the game’s fans will simply respond those 30 levels aren’t the core of the game. Which, fair enough. The majority of the game takes place in the "open zones” But oh wait, the level design is EVEN WORSE here! Go play literally other sonic game, and it’ll feel like an actual adventure. But frontiers is just running around in an empty open world touching enough 5 second automatic levels floating in the sky until you’ve gotten the arbitrary number of progression maguffins. The only thing breaking this gameplay loop up is combat, and challenges. Well the combat is one step removed from the nicktoons unite type combat seen in sonic boom rise of lyric. Give sonic a couple flashy animations attached to attacks that are all functionaly identical, and people are tricked into thinking it’s more than just a mindless button masher. Sure some of the bigger enemy encounters have different things going on. But every single one of them is so heavily scripted that even the odd decent battle, is boring to fight even a 2nd time. This carries over to the super sonic battles, which just show all you need is a lightshow and tryhard music for people to ignore the fact that nothing is happening. First of all the ENTIRE point of super Sonic battles is that you have to beat the boss before you run out of rings, which always start at 50. You’re supposed to be picking up rings as you fight so you won’t die as they’re constantly draining. But in frontiers you can just run in circles and fill up your ring meter to 400 before the fight and have no worry of running out. And the mechanics are no different than when you’re fighting a low level grunt enemy, it’s the EXACT SAME button mash combat seen everywhere else. Oh yeah the parry requires no timing btw. Meaning the optimal strat is to stand there holding parry waiting for the enemy to hit you, which triggers your counter attack, which is your strongest hitting single move. And when the boss is half dead it triggers some light show that doesn’t even effect the fight whatsoever. Just put more moving lights on the screen and now it’s cooler. Jiggle the keys in front of babies face to keep it entertained! There’s one bit in the third boss where you have to grab a constantly moving blade and aim it back at the boss to hit it. Literally the only time the game ever asks you to do anything at all and it immediately stuns the boss and lets you button mash it to death.
And the challenges I can’t believe don’t get hated on. How do so many people go 20 years hating every sonic game after sa2 but when a sonic game gives you 60 seconds to hold left in a hamster wheel for 2 seconds NOW you’re a fan again? Oh maybe the first hamster wheel didn’t do it for you. You weren’t convinced until they copy pasted the wheel 4 more times. (The variety is very lacking) Bet you guys were really pogging the 3rd time it tested your ability to hold the parry button down...? Or how about those apparently super cool moments where it gives you 70 seconds to run somewhere that only takes 8 seconds to reach, with no obstacles or anything between the start and finish. Nah it must be the 7th time you did a walking puzzle that’s slightly more complex than the same ones seen in sonic boom rise of lyric, but much less complex than the club penguin minigame using the same concept.
Don’t even get me started on the story and fishing minigame. I could make another wall of text about both but this has gone on long enough so I’ll keep it short. But the story is exhaustingly boring and pretentious. Ian Flynn clearly attempted to fix the sorry state the previous writers left the series in. But he was given nothing to work with. The game takes place on a nondescript island that doesn’t resemble anything sonic related at all, and clearly no actual budget for cutscenes. Meaning all he can do is just awkwardly reference past games about as smoothly as a family guy cutaway gag, to sloppily establish pretty much everything is canon. But that just does more damage to the series continunity than ever. There was a very clear intended reboot, ignoring that makes it all a complete mess. Sonic’s voice direction makes him sound like a tired old man who doesn’t want to do it anymore. One of the only major events in the story is that Sonic is getting weaker and weaker as he saves his friends and uncovers the history of the island. Already lame enough that it doesn’t fit in with gameplay at all. Sonic could be about to keel over in the cutscene, barely able to even walk anymore, but the second it fades out into gameplay you’re gonna be running at full speed like nothing’s wrong. Worse than that though is the second Sonic can’t take it anymore and it becomes a real problem, it’s cured in the same cutscene. This shows me the mandates that say Sonic can never lose, and if he’s ever behind must immediately regain the upper hand, is stil in place. Meaning no matter how they dress it up, any dramatic moments are going to be as impactful as the null space bit in forces. Y’know that bit where sonic’s sucked into the void of nothingness forever only to escape literally 20 seconds later effortlessly. Except at least that played into a style over substance appeal and was very quick instead of dragged out throughout the entire game as a major plot point. Even Eggman’s character is unfun to watch here. Usually an inherently charming, charismac character, reduced to a direction that’s dreadfully melodramatic, and frankly kind of gross.
The fishing is just playing into *it’s not a good game if it doesn’t have fishing* and also *ecks dee big the cat*  memes and has no depth and is actually so broken you can fish for ten minutes and be overpowered for the rest of the game. And mechanically it’s THE most embarassing fishing minigame ever put into a game. Sonic fans will go *oh well it’s just an optional side mode who cares*. Bro that’s not an excuse, everybody’s golf has a more robust fishing system all around. It’s being outclassed by a GOLFING game. Comparisons don’t get better against anything else. Especially not when Ocarina of Time had a pretty decent fishing hole back in 1998 on the n64.  Like look, I’m not expecting an actual simulator here, fishing is usually very simple in many of the games its featured in (which is a LOT of games these days). But this flat out NOT a fishing minigame. It’s literally just functionally a loot box. You don’t have to aim for the fish, there’s no care given to what kind of fish would be in the same ecosystem, THERE’S NO DUPLICATES.... You press A, press A again, and you pull out a random object, half the time not even a fish. You very quickly realize that it’s just giving you items down a list until you’ve gotten them all. You’re not fishing, you’re opening loot boxes with a fishing skin. And to make absolutely sure every corner of this game is devoid of any substance whatsoever...The coins you have to find to be able to pay for fishing....are given to you in the hundreds for free every few nights during an event that’s impossible to fail.
This isn’t the extent of my complaints, that’s enough though. I’ve literally played every single sonic game and frontiers is the only one I absolutely hated. Free Riders on Kinect is a better experience by a long shot. This game is the definition of “My expectations were low but holy f*rick!” How did perception on this game go from “This game looks like trash” when it was first shown off to being THE most universally well recieved game in the entire series?!?? NOTHING CHANGED. The world still sucks, the level design sucks, the story is stupid and boring....Every single thing it does is just something that was hated in Forces, or taken from MUCH better games and done as bad as possible. Why do people like this game? I literally say “I’m begging you to explain why you like this game” to people and they can’t do it. “oh it’s the best sonic game in years!” BRO IT’S THE ONLY SONIC GAME IN YEARS THIS SERIES IS DEAD. WE’VE WASTED 10 YEARS ON FORCES AND FRONTIERS. Forces took 4 years to make for some reason, frontiers took another 5. They’re going to be updating forces with likely filler worthless content for the next year instead of making another game. This series was putting out better content when they were releasing 2-3 games a year every year. It’s crystal clear to me that Sonic boom did an obscene amount of damage to Sega financially and they were out of money for Sonic. The last few years were literally just desperate fund raising to make enough money to even finish frontiers. How are people so pessimistic and down on the series to say there hasn’t been anything good since sa2, yet this bottom of the barrel unity asset flip garbage got EVERYONE back????? Like dude even other games I flat out hate, which mind you is honestly not that many in the grand scheme of the industry...I at least understand why a certain audience might like it.  Even my most despized games I can go *well this audience is into it and I understand why their taste makes them find it enjoyable and that’s fine* But there’s NOTHING here. Frontiers is EVERYTHING people hate about Forces/modern sonic and more. The music isn’t even good. There’s a select few tracks that are cool but a major majority of the ost is the cyberspace levels. Kind of hard to make any stand out iconic tracks worthy of Sonic’s musical legacy when you have to write 30 songs that play over the same 40 second long green hill zone level over and over again.

Let's Talk #ItsPony: Premature Final Thoughts
If a tree were to fall down and no one was around to see it, does it make a sound?
By that logic, if a show has not aired in over a year, is it canceled?
Tumblr media
For my (presumably) final thoughts on Nickelodeon's It's Pony, feel free to keep reading.
lt's Pony originally premiered in January of 2020. The slice of life animated series centers around the adventures of Annie and her talking pony living in the city. Throughout several episodes, the duo deal with a wide range of situations, such as school, a fear of plants, and their apartment complex.
The show stands out from Nickelodeon's usual animated fare for a couple of reasons. Unlike most of their shows, which are mostly produced in the United States, It's Pony is animated in the United Kingdom with voice acting primarily taking place in the US.
Where this show differs from either SpongeBob or The Loud House is the pacing. It takes things a bit slower, allowing for a lot of things to occur within each quarter-hour. The show can be seen as a contrast to the aforementioned two, which often feature breakneck pacing in order to feature as many gags as possible.
Tumblr media
Despite being renewed for a second season, it went off the network around December of the same year. Unlike the aforementioned shows or The Casagrandes, which air in rerun marathons between new episodes, It's Pony never got any reruns. It also stopped airing before it could finish its first season.
The show continues to air on Nickelodeon's international networks, and Season 2 is already airing in its home country.
Recently, the show came back to the United States... on Nicktoons.
For those unaware, in the United States, Nicktoons is a cable channel that originally served as an extension of Nickelodeon's titular programming. Within the past decade, it has drifted to airing reruns of the aforementioned shows and The Fairly OddParents. It also serves as Nickelodeon's equivalent of a graveyard.
Tumblr media
Several shows have been dumped to that network to either burn off their remaining episodes or fulfill a contractual obligation. Notable examples include the aforementioned OddParents, Oggy and the Cockroaches, and Pig Goat Banana Cricket, the latter show airing its Series Finale on a Saturday at 5 AM.
Tumblr media
There is no official reason as to why It's Pony has been dumped to Nicktoons. Possibilities include the COVID-19 pandemic, a change in management, or just being hard to promote.
The pandemic might have impacted the show's production, since it is animated in the UK but the voice actors are primarily in the US. It might have caused scheduled airings to be either delayed or canceled due to episodes not being ready to air.
In September of 2020, Nickelodeon brought in new leadership to their animation studio and promoted a few executives. Some became the "executive in charge" of several current and future Nicktoons. At no point in the press release was It's Pony mentioned.
Tumblr media
The only other possibility would be that the show sticks out from the network's other animated content, making it difficult to promote.
Tumblr media
The animation style, while distinct and colorful, makes the show look like it was meant to air on Nick Jr. However, it is too crass for the preschool brand due to how their shows tend to be primarily educational. Less likely is how Jessica DiCicco voices Annie using the exact same inflection as Lynn Loud from The Loud House. Any potential viewer would likely be confused and wonder why Lynn is suddenly hanging out with a talking horse.
Tumblr media
Could It's Pony ever return to Nickelodeon? No.
The network appears to have moved on and now focusing on promoting their newer shows as well as Paramount+ originals like Kamp Koral, the Rugrats reboot, and Star Trek: Prodigy. Select episodes of all three shows have either aired or will eventually air on the cable network.
Tumblr media
As for the future of It's Pony, a third season is unlikely. When it comes to airing in the United States, there is the possibility of it either being burned off on Nicktoons or dumped onto Paramount+. The latter option is preferable since it would avoid being preempted by Nickelodeon for the nth time.
Tumblr media
It's Pony sadly joins the lineup of failed Nicktoons which could not quickly match the success of either SpongeBob or The Loud House. Just within the past five years, that list has gone on to include Welcome to the Wayne, Ollie's Pack, Glitch Techs, and Rise of the TMNT, with possibly more on the way.
It's Pony airs (somewhere around the world) on Nickelodeon. Select episodes are available to own on digital providers.
Tumblr media
Until next time, thank you for reading.

Nickelodeon All Star Brawl and the Siren’s Song of Speculation
Tumblr media
I remember the TV Wars of the 90s, as kids from all creeds argued over which channel was better: Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon. Both networks featured tons of acclaimed, beloved original programming, each with their own unique strengths. Cartoon Network had a back catalog of many classic shows, from Looney Tunes to Tom and Jerry, alongside their own “Cartoon Cartoon” block of original shows, while Nick supplemented their own Nicktoons with live-action sitcoms like Kenan and Kel, as well as variety shows like Kablam. In truth, I loved each network a good deal and could never really choose between the two. Now, one of my favorite aspects of Cartoon Network back in the day were the advertising bumps that would portray all of the animated characters living in a big city together and occasionally interacting. Whether it was Mandy and Raven attempting to out-snark each other, or Samurai Jack and Johnny Bravo having to work through their own sexual tension, I loved seeing these characters together and always wished it would happen more. You had a few rare crossovers here and there, and eventually Cartoon Network would release a mascot fighter, the somewhat mediocre Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion, which certainly had a lot of heart but lacked polish. Nickelodeon had the rare crossover with their own programs, and on the video game front, they had a wide variety of crossover games through the Nicktoons Unite franchise and yet they never got around to making a mascot fighter…until now.
Imagine my surprise to see the trailer for Nickelodeon All Star Brawl pop up with some really inspired roster picks and it…actually looks like it might be fun? I mean at first glance I was slightly amused but didn’t have high hopes…and then I saw that Ludosity had a role in developing this. Ludosity themselves have made their own platform fighter, Slap City, which despite some jank, had a lot of passion poured into it and the end result was a very fun experience with original, expressive characters. If they were assisting with development in any way, I knew this game had some real potential behind it. Then came news from Ludosity that this game would have rollback netcode (in short, netcode that results in smoother, more consistent online play than has been possible in the past), something that not even Smash Ultimate has and suddenly a lot of people are getting legitimately excited for something that ordinarily wouldn’t turn any heads. Obviously the finished product isn’t out yet and we’ll have to see how well it holds up, but there’s potential there for this game to end up being something halfway decent and I kind of need that hope in my life right now. So much so that I’m just going to do a deep dive on this thing and speculate like crazy. Will this all lead to inevitable disappointment? Probably! Couldn’t I spend my time on something more important? Sure! But nothing else could possibly excite me more. It’s not scientifically possible!
WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR
So right off the bat, we have 14 characters shown off in that reveal trailer, with more promised. From Spongebob we have of course the sponge himself, Patrick and Sandy. Next, Leo and Mikey from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Both of these series are the biggest things Nick currently has, so it makes sense they have multiple reps and currently the highest number of stages, both having three stages apiece. The Loud House is confirmed to have at least two fighters, Lincoln and Lucy Loud, with two confirmed stages, and seeing as this is one of the few popular Nicktoons coming out of the network that isn’t Spongebob it makes sense to see more representation. From there though, things get weird as so far the titular hero from Danny Phantom is pretty much the only other representation from a Nicktoon that didn’t start in the 90s, but at least he gets a stage! To the surprise of many we get Nigel Thornberry from The Wild Thornberries, Helga from Hey Arnold and Reptar from Rugrats, so far with no stages to tie to them and none of them are the expected “main” characters from these shows. Would they really put in Helga without Arnold? Or have Nigel upstage his daughter? They might have just done it for the meme after all! Considering the cult status of Invader Zim it’s no shock Zim is playable (and comes with a stage!), but the real surprises were the likes of Powdered Toast Man from Ren & Stimpy and Oblina from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters who are just kind of obscure picks…and both seem like they get a stage to themselves. Also in the trailer we can see what’s clearly an Avatar: The Last Airbender stage and it’d be a real shock that one of the more acclaimed Nicktoons of all time wouldn’t make it into a fighting game like this.
Tumblr media
The official website lists 20 stages included in the game and as of right now, we’ve seen bits and pieces of about 13 of them. Now, it’s hard to say how the stage count would relate to the roster of course, but 20 seems like a decent size overall if everyone got a stage, right? However so far we have three TMNT stages and only two turtles, with Nigel, Reptar and Helga so far lacking a stage shown off. It’s really hard to say; I don’t think every series necessarily needs a stage for every character for one thing. But things go deeper as various retailers have what looks to be the box art for the game…albeit depicting all of the characters on it in silhouette.  A lot of characters are pretty easy to make out, but smack dab in the middle we see what looks like both Ren and Stimpy, with Cat and Dog from Catdog both visible on either end of it, and two more realistic, humanoid characters on the left, which looks like Aang and Korra from the two Avatar series. Assuming Ren and Stimpy are separate characters, that alone gives us 19 characters. Gir also may or may not be his own character, so that could make for 20. Could that be the full roster? Certainly possible and honestly I think asking for more than 20 characters is being more than a bit greedy…so let’s get more than a little greedy.
SUSPICIOUS OMISSIONS
Now, I think it’s impossible to include EVERYTHING Nick has in a game like this. Just not enough time, money or resources at the end of the day, even if this game got a decent budget or freedom in terms of roster selection. No matter what, not everyone’s going to make the cut. That said, I think it’s interesting to make note of who IS here…and who suspiciously seem absent. Looking at the previous Nick games, in particular the kart racing games that were released in the last few years, we have some weird overlaps. From the Spongebob cast, Squidward is so far nowhere to be seen. Both Arnold and Gerald had joined Helga for racing to represent Hey Arnold and you had Tommy, Angelica and Chuckie alongside Reptar to rep Rugrats. We had both Zim AND Gir as separate characters, as well as Ren and Stimpy…but no Powdered Toast Man. Similarly, no Thornberries of any kind or monsters could be seen, but Catdog was there! Rocko and Heffer from Rocko’s Modern Life also made the cut there…alongside all FOUR ninja turtles as well as Shredder. Also Jojo Siwa was there, but that’s not important (yet). We also had Clyde from The Loud House to round out the roster, though so far he’s a no-show here.
Now, a racing game and a fighting game have different needs and so I don’t think we should expect this exact roster for All Star Brawl. If anything, I feel like this game might be making more inspired roster choices and that’s why we aren’t seeing certain main characters. I mean, I’m sorry but what exactly would Arnold and Gerald’s movesets be? Helga at least is a bully who probably uses the Arnold shrine to power herself up or something, but I feel like they’ll have a hard enough time fleshing out her moveset alongside other “normal” kids like Lincoln and Lucy. There are also like…the potential problems of letting people beat up babies with the Rugrats cast. I’ll be honest, if I had to choose between playing as babies or a giant dinosaur with laser breath…I’m going with Reptar. But I’m sure there’s plenty of mobile games that have had all of these characters playable in some form, so these stances might not hold up to scrutiny. That being said, across the racing games and so far all of the material we have for All Star Brawl, there are two series that really seem like they should be here but are absent.
Tumblr media
During the 2000s, both Fairly Oddparents and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron were some of Nick’s bigger shows alongside Spongebob Squarepants. Jimmy was the star of a hit original film that had his own show green lit after its success, while Fairly Oddparents was effectively the Donald Duck to Spongebob’s Mickey Mouse (as per creator Butch Hartman). These two series were big parts of most of the Nicktoons Unite crossover games, and both even had three different crossover specials together with The Jimmy/Timmy Power Hour series. Timmy Turner was himself the star of multiple TV movies and a few live-action TV movies…so where are they? For Jimmy Neutron, I suppose the overall failure of the spinoff Planet Sheen might be one reason why Nick seems cool on remembering the series at all. For Fairly Oddparents it might be possible there’s bad blood with series creator Butch Hartman….but we have Danny Phantom in these games, so that doesn’t really seem to hold much water. Corporate whims are hard to understand and it’s possible those in charge of Nick right now just don’t like these shows and don’t want the games representing them in any way. Meanwhile, shows like Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko’s Modern Life and Invader Zim have either received revivals, Netflix specials or attempts at reboots in recent years, so clearly Nick WANTS people to remember these series. We might never know why some characters make the cut and others don’t, but I’ll admittedly be pretty bummed if Jimmy and Timmy can’t throw down in this game with everyone else.
WISHLIST TIME
Now of course, when it comes to games like this were the roster is the main selling point, one can’t help but speculate as to who may or may not join the battle, and even if I’m trying to keep my expectations in check, I won’t deny the siren’s song of speculation any longer! Now honestly, I want to keep this narrowed down to four choices and if I’m being honest, most are long shots; if even one made it in, I’d be more than satisfied, but without any further ado, let’s start with a pretty common pick: XJ9/Jenny Wakeman from My Life as a Teenage Robot.
Tumblr media
Jenny’s show was more of a modest hit than anything else, but I think anyone that tuned in to watch would argue the show just never got the attention it deserved. A robot guardian of the Earth who just wants to act like a normal teenager, it was a clever role reversal of similar superhero shows. Everyone KNOWS Jenny’s a robot and while she was created to save the world, she wants to be a normal teenage girl. She relishes going to school and hanging with friends rather than going on adventures, which was kind of refreshing. No secret identity plotlines (well, for Jenny anyway) and the added awkwardness of a robot trying to fit in with humans made for a great show…oh and also she’d have a fun moveset, able to shape shift into just about anything. She just seems to fit in SO well with a game like this…but sadly the show hasn’t really been acknowledged in a long time, so I think she’s a bit of a long shot. Still, I’ll pine away!
Tumblr media
Now speaking of superheroes, I think El Tigre is another Nick show that just didn’t get a lot of love from the network itself. Despite winning a lot of acclaim, the show was cancelled after only one season. Starring Manny Rivera, he took on the mantle of El Tigre as he juggled going to school and trying to survive the zaniness of Miracle City, home to many a superhero and supervillain. Manny himself has both hero and villain relatives, and throughout the series struggles with what path he wants to walk down. The show was very high-energy and focused on fun over anything else, and while it never really got much drama out of the undecided nature of Manny’s morality, it was still an interesting hook. One episode could have Manny as heroic while another would play up his selfish or mischievous side. As a superhero though, Manny would be perfect for a game like this. He’d be pretty agile, likely using his grapple claws to recover to the stage or attack enemies. If they brought El Tigre back into the limelight, I’d be surprised but very happy. It’d also help flesh out the 2000s-era Nicktoons that so far only Danny, Zim and Spongebob are repping.
Tumblr media
While I’m on a roll of talking about forgotten Nicktoons, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention ChalkZone. Starring a young artist named Rudy, one day he stumbles upon magic chalk that allows him to enter a world filled with erased chalk drawings. Teaming up with one of his own childhood creations, Snap, and fellow classmate Penny, the trio would go on all sorts of adventures in the ChalkZone. I just…really like this show? It had a sweet message about nurturing creativity and art, and had an interesting art style for all of the chalk-based characters. I’m not so sure if they could fully replicate it in All Star Brawl, but I’d love to see them try. I think Rudy would be a good fit, using his chalk to generate a lot of different items for his attacks, maybe even summoning Snap for a few moves? I can dream…
Tumblr media
Now, this last one is probably the longest shot of them all but uh…anyone else remember Kablam?! A variety show that featured a ton of recurring shorts often done in different art styles, the show had two cartoon hosts, Henry and June, who would introduce the shorts but often had their own plots and segments to themselves. Kablam ended up being a spin-off of live-action skit show, All That, and one of the more beloved shorts on Kablam eventually spun-off to its own show, Action League Now! Sadly, Kablam itself seems mostly forgotten nowadays, even among fans. While there were apparently at least some attempts to reference Henry and June in some of the later Nick video games, they’re largely a relic of the older days of the network. Admittedly, I’m not sure how you could fashion a moveset out of them, but making them a duo character might let you make some cool stuff happen? It’d just be cool to see them get a little nod in a game like this, is all. We call this a wishlist for a reason!
LET’S GET STUPID
As long as I have you here, let’s just go nuts with just how deep the rabbit hole can go here, shall we? If we want to use semantics, this game is called Nickelodeon All Star Brawl, rather than Nicktoons All Star Brawl, so that means the whole of Nickelodeon is up for grabs and we can go so much deeper. Kenan and Kel, Cousin Skeeter, Drake and Josh, the iCarly crew…oh man, the choices are endless! If I can have Danny Phantom deck Megan in the face, this game is the best crossover ever made. There’s a ton of deep cuts you could make as well; Alex Mack, you could have Clarissa explain everything, or maybe bring in the creepy puppets of Mr. Meaty. Some might say it doesn’t matter if they use the word Nicktoons or not…this game is clearly going to be cartoon characters only…but to that I say….remember Jojo Siwa?!
So our last stop on this absolutely derailed train of thought is going to end with Nick’s very odd connection to various internet celebrities. Jojo Siwa is pretty well known as a dancer, among other things, and for a time she’s actually had some manner of involvement with Nickelodeon, appearing in various programs and even the Kids Choice Awards, but her crowning achievement was being made playable in Nickelodeon Kart Racers 2. Now, if Jojo Siwa can race with Spongebob and Zim and such…I pose a single question that I’m certain you cannot refute…why not allow Fred to join the battle?
Tumblr media
Yeah, that’s right; Fred! Once the world’s largest YouTuber, Fred Figglehorn not only got a guest spot on iCarly but his own television series AND several TV movies all on Nickelodeon. That’s more screen time than a LOT of Nicktoons out there got. Sure he’s not really a THING anymore but why let relevance stop us?! But you know, maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves just a little tiny bit. This is the first game like this, so wouldn’t it make sense to start small and build off of that foundation? So maybe the world isn’t ready for Fred vs. Spongebob yet…wait for the sequel…or maybe DLC!
Yeah, imagine this game gets DLC support to rival Smash Ultimate! Imagine who they might include in a potential Fighter’s Pass! Maybe you flesh out the Avatar roster with a fan favorite like Zuko or Bolin, and add in other smaller series like Rocket Power or Catscratch down the line. Or have themed passes. Oh man, imagine the Nick At Nite Challenger Pack! Or the Nick Jr. Challenger Pack! Steve and Blue will mop the floor with the cast and leave them black and blue! Yes, this all seems perfectly plausible and worth wasting excess brain power on! Don’t let anyone tell you any different!
CONCLUSION
OK so to kind of drop the bit for a second…this game has some potential to be fun and placate some of Nick’s older fans, but I think a lot of people were getting pretty carried away with the possibilities this game offered. All in good fun, of course. To be honest, I think most people are just trying to have a laugh, as they apply hitbox jokes to the Spongebob cast or make up memes using Smash Bros. lingo with Nick characters. I think it’s all a riot, and enjoy seeing people getting both legitimately excited and also just…not getting super toxic about the game right from the get-go. If you follow the Smash Bros. speculation scene at all…it gets pretty gross as people care VERY much about which fictional characters show up in a video game they probably don’t even play that much if at all. Fans get angry when Character A or Franchise B are given Mii costumes or Spirit Events; rather than be happy to get a nod at all from one of the biggest gaming crossovers there is, they’d rather complain that things didn’t shake out the exact way they want. When I look at the reaction to Nickelodeon All Star Brawl, most are just happy to relive some childhood memories of shows they grew up with and still hold dear, and are mostly just in for a good time. If this game ends up being halfway decent on that end, then that’s even better! But realistically, this game isn’t going to have EVERY character we’d want, and it’s likely that certain sacrifices are going to be made (like voice acting) to get the game out at all. Even if everyone’s playing up their excitement and just messing around, it’s good to see the Internet seemingly happy over something for once, and this was a neat little writing prompt that let me get kind of nuts, so I’m happy for now.
Let’s hope this can be a brawl to remember!

2020
It has been a decade since the greatest conflict in Human history happened
The Great Battle between the Heroes and Villains
And the Villains won, massacring the heroes. A civil war occured that wiped out the greater Villains. Now slowly dying, Earth has become a land of mercenaries, marauders, and creatures of horror or rage. In this land, former US Soldier Randall Malloy is brought into a greater world as his life is targeted by enemies beyond his scope. Relying on his protector, the Symbiote Lesion, they must survive in a world where chaos reigns and the world is far more grey than it is black and white.
Except for certain OCs, all characters, concepts and franchises here don't belong to me.
