In 2012 I read about the International Manga Contest hosted by the government in Japan and was very interested in it. I remember visiting my dad’s office at the time and when I read about the contest, my mind immediately started thinking up a protagonist for a potential story for the contest, that’s how Keiko came to be! 

I was too late for the contest in 2012, so I had to wait until 2013 to enter the contest. The contest asked for a one-shot story (auto-conclusive story) and I ended up with a one-shot spanning over a total of 43 pages, I titled it Nightrider after Electric Light Orchestra’s song with the same title. 

The comic tells the story of Katie, a total weeb and artist that is tasked with writing a difficult essay but gets distracted drawing manga. Keiko (the character from Katie’s manga) comes to her aid in writing it but not before a lot of crazy things happen first! I consider Nightrider to be a pilot of sorts for Keiko’s actual story.

This was the first time I ever ventured into making a comic this big, I only ever made small 3 or at the very most, 4 page comics. At the time (and it actually still is) this was my pride and joy and was one of the things I’ve been most proud of in my entire life. I poured my sweat, blood and tears into this thing and put in all my love into it. It’s been one of the projects I’ve been most excited to draw and to finish in my entire lifetime and really taught me how to make comics. I think Quentin Tarantino (my fav movie director) said it best, “there’s no better film school than actually making a film”, and that’s the same for comics. 

I sent off the printed version of the comic to Japan and it was actually legit received by someone in there, because I had the tracking number and I could see who signed off on the package. I never heard a word of the comic afterwards, I never won anything because of it nor was it acknowledged but I’m glad I got to do it because it made me step out of my comfort spot and made me really think about doing a more complex and well-thought out comic. 

At the time I took comic workshops at my college, and my then professor told me to announce the fact that I had entered my comic in the contest through a drawing (it’s the last drawing in the set of pics in this post) They put up an enlarged copy of the drawing on the wall of the workshop building and I remember seeing it and thinking that I couldn’t be prouder of myself :’)

PS: The drawing says “Keiko will be starring in her own manga (japanese comic) and will be competing in the 7th international contest! With a duration of 43 pages, it will be the 1st manga created by the author. The author also hopes to be one of the first contestants in Mexico and Latinamerica. Please wish her luck.”
