Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 40 part two

What a Relief

After spending a few weeks in Gusu doing...stuff, our trio comes to Jinlintai for the discussion conference. Unusually for a CQL stair-climbing scene, nobody is planning to murder anyone once they get to the top.

Our crew walks up the stairs past 3 massive sculpted reliefs featuring Jin Guangyao.

First and most important, I have to point out that the sculpture version of Lan Xichen [edit: Nie Mingjue actually, whoops] is wearing a sash that looks like this:

*cough*

Meanwhile, for the picture with the sword and flames, qhanzi.com tells me that the written characters are 伏殺, fú shā; Google translate tells me this means "ambush." Specifically Fu=conceal, Sha=kill. Ballsy to have a monumental artwork on your front steps announcing that you're a backstabbing turncoat, Jin Guangyao.

Speaking of balls, Jiang Cheng jumps at the opportunity to bust some when the Lan bros arrive with Wei Wuxian in tow. He pretends not to know who Wei Wuxian is, but obviously does know something, given how bitchily he asks to be introduced. Lan Wangji continues his 13-year-long silent treatment of JC while Lan Xichen tries to figure out which bland smile he's meant to be deploying in this situation.

They're all rescued by the appearance of Jin Guangyao 3.0, who has discarded his Nie braids and his Wen hotness in favor of Jin ostentatiousness.

He's no longer wearing the v-neck robe and topknot crown that we associate with the cultivation sects. Instead he's wearing a hat and a round-necked robe with a big embroidered design on the chest, that resembles the clothing style of a court official.

Some people see JGY's bureaucratic wardrobe as signaling that he's an unassuming administrator, someone who is not threatening to the power structure or is not ambitious. I see it more as conveying that his ambition reaches beyond the cultivation sects into the realm of dynastic/imperial politics.

Anyway, Jiang Cheng turns his ire towards his nephew, and Lan Xichen relaxes again. Possibly he is a little too relaxed, judging by how he's ogling Jiang Cheng.

Party Monster

Fanfics are often accused of giving us an out-of-character (OOC) Wei Wuxian, but no fanfic Wei Wuxian is as OOC as the Wei Wuxian who attends this banquet. Normally Wei Wuxian is a mildly annoying flirt, but as soon as soon as he arrives in Koi tower he is (presumably) possessed by the spirit of Jin Guangshan, and becomes a gross sex pest.

He goes out of his way to hit on the wife of the clan leader and make googly eyes at all of the maids, whose social status doesn't allow them to be rude to him. And he does it in front of his date! What the hell, possessed Wei Wuxian.

While oblivious to Lan Wangji's jealousy, Wei Wuxian does check in with him to make sure it's ok to put on his "crazy Mo Xuanyu" act. LWJ replies with a certain amount of salt, but once Wei Wuxian makes it clear he's thinking about Lan Wangji's public face, LWJ chills out and answers him normally.

Side note: in no universe would this cute lil maid be making eyes at heavily-masked Mo Xuanyu when unmasked, radiant, filthy-rich Lan Wangji is right there to be smiled at.

Jin Guangyao greets everyone and some dancers start doing their thing; mercifully, possessed Wei Wuxian refrains from hitting on the dancers. As soon as Jin Guangyao starts to circulate through the room, Nie Huaisang has an epic nervous breakdown all over him, which is even better entertainment than the dancers.

This gives Wei Wuxian the cover he needs to slip out of the hall unnoticed. Well, as long as nobody notices Lan Wangji's obvious pining.

Fight Club

The prophecy foretells that into each generation of Jins will be born one douchebag cousin. Jin Chan is the douchebag cousin of his generation.

Jin Chan accuses "Mo Xuanyu" of being a sex pest, and Wei Wuxian suddenly understands why the plot made him act so OOC at the party. Mo Xuanyu wasn't really a sex pest; he was a regular pest, trying to get information out of Qin Su, not trying to seduce her. But he doesn't know that yet. In other adaptations Mo Xuanyu is gay, but CQL exists in a strange censorship-created realm in which gayness is pervasive but never mentioned, and therefore there is no homophobia. So nobody would care if Mo Xuanyu was gay.

When Wei Wuxian realizes what Mo Xuanyu did, he thinks "Mo Xuanyu, do you want to die?"

Nice choice of idiom, Wei Wuxian. I believe we have firmly established that yes, Mo Xuanyu absolutely did want to die.

The show is kind of vague, verbally, about whether Wei Wuxian 2.0 has a golden core. But there are a lot of moments that strongly suggest he does, at this point, have a functioning core.

This rock attack is, I hope, one of those moments, or else Jin Chan is a total pussy, getting knocked back by landscape gravel.

Next, Wei Wuxian shows Jin Ling the super-secret move known as "arm twisting," which Jin Ling, as an only child, has never encountered before.

Anyone with siblings is very familiar with this move.

Because this is The Untamed, this move should be executed with extra spinning whenever possible.

Jin Ling learns the move right away, and uses it to win the scuffle.

Avuncular

After the fight, Wei Wuxian sits with Jin Ling for a chat, and gives him the classic uncle advice "have as many fights as possible while you're young, because when you're older you'll have to be mature and get along with people."

I love Wei Wuxian so much.

For contrast, Jin Ling says that Jin Guangyao tells him not to get in fights. This makes Wei Wuxian seem like the cooler elder, but it also has a more sinister element, of Jin Guangyao holding Jin Ling back. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian grew up constantly fighting with each other--sparring as well as informal fights, presumably. And their cultivation was super strong, partly as a result of that.

Wei Wuxian takes the opportunity to tell Jin Ling that he's not in love with Qin Su any more, because he's transferred his affections to someone else. Obviously Hanguang-Jun is the someone else, given that they've been inseparable for weeks. To keep Jin Ling from yelling while he explains, he clamps his hand over Jin Ling's mouth.

The thing is, in order to effectively clamp your hand over someone's mouth, there has to be something behind them--a wall, the mattress, your own torso, or something else solid. Otherwise they can just jerk their head backwards to get away from your hand. Or they can stand up and walk away, even.

Jin Ling, hilariously, does not realize this, and spends a ridiculously long time sitting still and making angry faces while Wei Wuxian rests his hand on his face.

Spy Game

Later that night, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get ready for some shenanigans.

Not the sexy kind, alas, just some paperman snooping.

Wei Wuxian, because he's facing serious danger, is feeling extra playful and cute, and he takes time to goof around with Lan Wangji before getting down to business.

In paperman form, he's able to do some things that the censors overlook, including tugging on Lan Wangji's headband and apparently blowing him a kiss. In the book and the donghua, he catches onto Lan Wangji's lip on his way down his face, too.

One thing that's kind of muted in the live action as compared to the novel is how much Lan Wangji enjoys Wei Wuxian's childish and playful behavior. Lan Wangji never got to be playful as a child, but with Wei Wuxian he can cut loose--which he does mostly in the sack or when they're drinking together. But even when he stays in control of himself, he likes Wei Wuxian's silliness.

He tells Paper-Xian, tenderly, to be very careful, before he sends him on his way.

The Adventures of Paperman

The CGI department outdoes itself with paperman, making an animated character so adorable I'd be happy to watch a whole episode of him.

Paper-Xian sneaks into JGY's study and pokes around, finding an empty envelope. Then he listens and watches while Qin Su stumbles in, retching.

She's followed closely by Jin Guangyao; they proceed to have an absolutely fucking endless argument in which the words "sister," "brother," "incest" "rapist dad" are never said, instead using vagueburger phrasing like "this matter."

Jin Guangyao does freely admit to killing their kid, though, and wants to know who told Qin Su about it so he can kill them, too. She won't tell him, shockingly.

Jin Guangyao ends the fight by putting a paralysis spell on his wife and then making her go to sleep with another spell, which is the cultivator equivalent of saying "I've said what I had to say and I need some space."

He takes her into a secret room where he is also keeping a bunch of talisman-protected stuff and a shockingly small number of books.

Seriously, as a person who has way too many books, I am personally offended by the way Jin Guangyao wastes shelf space in his secret room.

As Paper-Xian sneaks around the room, Jin Guangyao helpfully pulls aside the curtain covering the shelf with Nie Mingjue's head on it, so he can grouse at NMJ for (figuratively) haunting him. Seriously? Dude, you keep a guy's head on your bookshelf, he gonna haunt ya.

The episode ends with Paper-Xian bowing (adorably) to Nie Mingjue, and then sitting laying on his face, which would make BOTH Lan brothers jealous if they found out.

Song reaction was kinda interesting. Hm... Just a thought in Steven Universe was great to see how the Wukongverse thinks of it

OOOF

"Here Comes a Thought" is such a good song and scene that I ended up thinking about the different Wukongs put into that scenario of having to examine their personal flaws/demons in a mindscape. Ofc with their thoughts and memories manifesting as butterflies.

The one singing Garnet's parts is def LMK!Sandy (with the other Sha Wujings backing him up), with the chorus from the different Wukongs.

LMK: Gets really quiet. Like suspisciously so. The others go to shake him, only for a bottled storm of emotions and butterflies to pour from his body like a waterfall. Each one a moment where he lost his temper, a good friend, lost Macaque... He's lived a long life full of regrets. Soon only a recent memory of Macaque, smiling warmly at him, calms the storm.

HeroIsBack: Ignores the thoughts fluttering around him... until they start to swarm. He frantically tries to pluck them away, almost ripping into the swarm. A memory of Liuer appears; the moment where the sage yelled at the kid, and when Liuer cried and ran away. SWK weakly reaches to try and retrieve the vision, only for it to pass between his fingers. He only rises once more when he shows his tears, another memory of Liuer walking up to embrace him.

Reborn: Smashes the single thought-butterfly that manifests, only for it to bleed upwards into a fountain of many more. He's drowning in them. He reaches out a hand and grasps. The hand that pulls him from the storm turns out to be a memory of his fellow pilgrims. A tiny thought-butterfly lands in his palm, a familar tilt of the head making Reborn smile sadly. He brings it to touch his forehead.

Netflix: Looks around confused in his minescape. There's nothing there. No one is there. Except for a butterfly/thought that refuses to let him examine it, always flying out of reach. He jumps and yells for it, but gets no where. As the song progresses, Netflix finally pauses and breathes deepily. Holding out his hand, the thought finally landing and showing the memory of his last meeting with Lin. He smiles and lets the thought linger before it flies away.

NewGods: Flicks a thought-butterfly away like a cigarette. It returns, but does't grow any larger. He sighs and lets it sit on his shoulder peacefully. He turns and his back is covered in tiny thoughts just chilling. He shrugs and the smaller ones dissolve. He's ok to let them rest.

2000sCartoon: He laughes. His thoughts are a single flurry of butterflies that fly past him like migrating monarchs. He waves them goodbye and goes to tend to the SWKs not doing so well. A memory lingers on his head like a halo.

Meihouwang: Almost shot-for-short Ruby and Sapphire, just replaced with Shihou and a memory of Mihou. The smaller monkey gets so worked up by one large thought that he nearly forgets that his Mihou has greater issues. He collides with the memory of Mihou at the end, hugging it tightly.

Smash!: "Oh no! Don't you go pulling a Steven Universe on me! I'm leaving!" *gets swarmed by thought-butterflies* "Darn it." Is very self-aware of the situation being played out. Keeps ignoring his thoughts, even as they begin to multiply and pelt him like stones. He soon snaps and screams at them, only to turn and see a memory of him snapping at his friends in anger. He goes quiet. A memory of Goldie appears and lays her head on his shoulders comfortingly.

As for the song itself, I feel like most of the SWKs be like "Cute song." but not think much of it. Except Meihouwang!Shihou who starts singing it to himself and Mihou. Shihou gets worried when the white-furred monkey starts weeping, telling him it's a beautiful message. Netflix!SWK seems quiet, but closer inspection would reveal cathartic tears.

Hello! I hope you're doing well so far. What do you think of these headcanons: Bai He is one of LBD's descendant. That's why her body took so well to LBD's powers. Also, Wukong had met and spoken Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing pre Havoc, and during the journey he's just avoiding mentioning that he knew them before they got expelled from Heaven, and midway both the pig demon and river demon remembered that the friendly mischievous stableboy and the monkey menace that terrorized Heaven were the same person. Or, more funny factor, only the horse knew that the three were acquainted with each other before their disgrace and is just waiting for them to notice that they knew each other. When did you think SWK met Macaque, before he went to train in Subodhi's place, or after that?

hey <3 this will prob be a long answer, so imma just put everything under the cut :)

let us begin with headcanon #1

Bai He is one of LBD's descendants

ok, i have some issues with this hc tbh

1) LBD is a bone spirit, not in anyway a celestial or a human, also she's labeled as a demon simply bc the term yāoguài (妖怪) is synonymous to demon & evil spirit (and LBD falls into the "evil spirit" category, although from past showings it appears that she wasn't always "evil" but by lmk canon she is).

2) despite being in the "demon" category like DBK and Spider Queen, she feels very separate from them. idk, maybe it's just me, but LBD feels like one entity, like there cannot be ancestors or descendents of her bc she is way too connected to her own spirit essence (i don't know how to word that better). what i mean is, LBD's powers and statures feels a lot older than the celestial court itself. she holds herself with such high stature, she talks about destiny and fate as if she was there when they were created. she is old as bones (pun fully intended) and knows it. there is no one like her because there cannot be.

and 3) if Bai He were to have some ancestral connection to LBD, i think it would make more sense that an ancestor of hers was a priest to LBD rather than LBD herself.

but also, there's a part of me that feels like inserting Bai He into some past connection with LBD takes away from the chilling notion that LBD just picked Bai He for the sole reason that Bai He was a child, that Bai He was innocent, that Bai He was a casualty of her greater goal that she was willing to sacrifice. Bai He demonstrates LBD's uncaring and apathetic cruelty towards humans (the people she originally wanted to help) bc to her, once she builds that "perfect world," the humans will not remember her past actions or what it cost to create a Heaven on Earth.

she got that "end justify the means" mentality, ya know?

Wukong knowing his companions pre-JTTW

so, yes, i do love this headcanon, but i am also so conflicted bc on one hand: hilarious dramatic irony that these guys were familiar with each other in the past but because of centuries of shit, neither of them remember or one of them remembers bc reasons.

but i also think no bc i highly doubt Sun Wukong would remember every single celestial he interacted with while he was in Heaven. i think it would be funnier if he never recognized them bc both Zhu Baije and Sha Wujing have changed dramatically (Zhu Baije looks like a pig now, Sha Wujing.....i don't remember....shit). maybe he would think, "hey, these guys remind me of some idiots i met in Heaven lol," but it wouldn't really click unless it was made super obvious to him.

personally, i think Sha Wujing and Zhu Baije know but mostly because everybody knows it was Sun Wukong, Handsome Monkey King, Great Sage Equal to Heaven, who wreaked havoc in Heaven (twice, i might add) and went to war over it and almost won. like, in the books at least, Zhu Baije was very aware of who SWK was when his "wife" (whom swk was disguised as in order to sneak into the pig demon's house that wasn't actually his house) informed him that the monk he captured was accompanied by the legendary and horrifying Sun Wukong.

however, Sha Wujing would be the only one of the three to recognize Zhu Baije as the celestial guard who tried to flirt with Chang'e and faced the consquences but i highly doubt they even talked to each other before JTTW.

the Ao Lie addition is very funny, but idk if the guy would even remember any of the Heavenly court's faces or names unless he had to interact with them a lot (i will add it to my lists of headcanons tho bc it is funny and i like it, so my logical brain will have to suck it up).

When did SWK meet Macky

oh dear, i change my mind about this all the time. like, both work pretty good in my mind and would still illustrate that these monkeys were old, old friends who were close long before the brotherhood. even before s4 special came out my personal headcanon was that SWK & Mac met at most before SWK crossed his name from the Diyu, soooooo props to me.

tbh it doesn't really matter to me when they meet, but i'll go ahead and say my "range" for when they met and became besties is after SWK became monkey king to right after SWK trained under Master Subodhi (hey, maybe they even met when SWK was heading back to FFM and they hit it off so well, SWK just invited Mac to come over and the idiot never left)

so yeah, there's my thoughts :3

#hyx #2ha #immortality #rant #ok heres my theory. some bl airs this spring that wasnt anticipated. so likely a non bl show that happens to garner a bl watching audience #like my roommate is a detective season 2 (qhich ohh idk when that comes out but i hope Checkmate comes out soon lol)#anyway the show airs popular but not super well known. just general nice success like Hikaru No Go/Qi Hun did #depending on if general atmosphere chills. that leads the way for either #league of noblemen. sha po lang. or hyx to air soon after #i imagine only One would air tho cause if anything gets too popular im predicting no more bl for several montjs afterward #so im guessing if its spl or hyx thats all we are getting.#like 2021? part of the reason we got killer qnd healer TOO is because it had low populqrity and didnt try to compete with word of honor #meanwyile woh was So popular it was the top show for a while. drew so much fandom drama it triggered the related drama still occuring with #stuff. qnd also no shows in the genre wanted to compete. and now of course. all the issues #i havenr been following just how bad bl airing has gotten but i know webnovels have been hassled lately which is very disheartwning #only thing im aware of shows wise. is that just like. fandom/fan drama wise some of the #intensity of show rules/shifts seems partly to try to get a reign on intense fan reaction situations #(like smear campaigns/accuasations/fans attacking other actors or other actors fans)#i know very very little obviously. and have no idea whats with the show specific limits rn #as the limits i was following more had to do wirh weibo and fancommunities and fanclubs #and increased expectance of actors to bear responsibility and that kind of effect

He knows what works, but he’s the best at making it seem like he doesn’t know and it’s just how he woke up. Lucien has the what I just rolled out of bed and put the first thing on really vibe nailed to perfection

Self proclaimed Prythian’s hottest High Lord will drop on you his 15 step skin care routine, will facemask twice a week, homemade, with plants, herbs, roots and fruits courtesy of Elain’s garden, how do you think I don’t have wrinkles with all the stress and anxiety I constantly have; and will give you a closet tour of all his black suits if you ask.. and he will judge you if you think they are all black and the same. The definition of scrubs up hella nice. Perfect mixture of nice but rough on the edges with a 5pm shadow, hair down (or in the preferred man bun) and a delicious suit. Will always always roll up his sleeves. He knows what it does to the people. Ok whore. Very much into skin brushing. He said no to dead skin cells and yes to good circulation. Weekly massages. Azriel: He wants you to think he doesn’t care, but he does and he will spend time getting ready for the events, more than he will ever admit. Listen if Lucien is the 10/10 you would never guess that he actually pays attention to this, then Az is like the 8/10. A man of details and has a great eye for color and pattern combinations. No you will not ever catch him in a full bright colored suit, but he enjoys going for different textures and colors albeit dark ones. He looks particularly good in blue and green. Once Mor asked him to accompany her to an event and he came in wearing a merlot velvet three piece suit and no one has been able to stop talking about it.It’s been three centuries. My man served. This one I loved but it has a particular style that ppl might not like in that it feels jumpy, confusing and with information gaps while reading, even though eventually everything that matters does end up being explained...in other works this would probably be just lazy writing, but here it is clearly an intentional choice bc 1) she doesn’t do this in her other novels 2) this is in WWX’s pov and dude has heavy ptsd and adhd, plus he tends to pretend to take everything lightly as a coping mechanisms...all this put together and it’s easy to understand why the story has such an unreliable narrator that even the other characters constantly point it out. I ended up loving this extra layer of storytelling.

- Heaven Official’s Blessings/ Tian Guan Ci Fu

If you’re in the mood for a saga type long ass novel with a ton of interesting side stories and side characters with a main character who is a true cinnamon bun in sweet romance with a side dish of sweet sweet aaaangst.

- Scum Villains Self Saving System

The most entertaining out of all of them. It manages to be a parody of two genres, both danmeis and wuia/jianghu harem het novels (fighter of destiny style) with OP leads, while also being its own cute and funny story with a heart to it.

- Meatbun’s 2ha/ Dumb Husky and his White Cat Shizun

What if someone took a look at the parody that is SVSSS and said...”no, you know what? This really deserves to be an epic, long ass, and I mean, topping old classics’ length novel packed with angst, filled with pain and topped with despair...and then we’re sprinkling some funfetti on top to fool y’all”...and you know what? that’s some good cake. (If you’re into cdramas SVSSS is to 2ha what The Romance of Tiger and Rose is to Goodbye My Princess).

- Priest’s Sha Po Lang:

Steampunk China plus creepy voodoo tribal ritual magic, involved in internal and external wars over petrol (with a different name) and with our leads in Iron Man suits, fighting, among other enemies hot young(er) hands on, on the field, western troop General, the Pope, that I can only visualize in my head as Jude Law. I tell you all of this nonsense just to say that instead of the ridiculous fun this should be, it ends up being a very compelling romance with lots of scheming and heavy plot and some heartbreaking scenes.

- The Golden Stage:

This is a court drama type novel with friends-to-rivals-to-lovers that is just the right length and compelling with not too many plot twists but two main characters who are really great both individually and together and this is the one out of all in the list I feel like re reading the most. It really is a solid read and I feel like I’m selling it short, bc it really is good. It is similar to Sha Po Lang and To Rule in a Turbulent World, a simpler version of those but not worse for it.

(Since you said top 5 and I’ve said 6, I regretfully cut down Heaven Official’s Blessing bc even though I love it, unlike MDZS or SVSSS, it didn’t feel like a standalone novel because some of the several storylines of the side characters that I loved were left open ended (although the main characters had a complete story arc), as if this book was supposed to be the first of a series and those characters would have their own spinoff books where I’d know where their story took them...except this really is a standalone, and so the lack of resolution bothers me).

- To Rule in a Turbulent World

This one doesn’t go in the top 5 list yet bc it’s not fully translated, last time I checked (tho it’s very near the end). As an ongoing novel, I adore it. If the ending isn’t terrible it might be in my top 3. It’s similar to the two above in plotlines but it has a quality to it that it takes care to make every character in it multidimensional. There are no good and bad characters, even the ones on the opposite side are given something that makes them relatable and human. Plus, the characters all change throughout the novel, most of all the protagonists and the novel gives itself breathing time between events where you just chill with the characters and learn about random things like agricultural practices.

- The Wife Is First

This one is just that light fluff feel good one that is great to pick up from time to time since it’s on going. Dumb Jock husband did everything wrong in his first life, gets a re-do and from then on it’s adorable respect the spouse juice and awe of said spouse smarts. Cute. Also, there’s a baby pet tiger.

-Faraway Wanderers and Lord Seventh/Qi Ye by Priest:

Qi Ye is similar to To Rule in A Turbulent World/The Golden Stage/Sha Po Lang. I really liked it still, just a tiny bit less than these. Since it’s the same author as SPL and I think it was written earlier, I have to say, the writing only got better.

Faraway Wanderers is a short read, but you’re only gonna like it if you’re ok with amoral main characters (I guess that is true for many on this list but it’s more obvious in this one bc the novel and the characters are unapologetic about it).

- YuWu by Meatbun - Still reading it, but is isn’t grabbing me like 2ha did.

- Silent Readings by Priest:

I love crime fiction novels (love Ding Mo’s novels) and this is that type of conspiracy, murder novel with smart criminals and smart investigators. Little romance, but still there.

- Guardian by Priest:

Priest is hilarious and except the last part that gets a bit heavy on the lore this is just a joy to read. Also pretty short.

- Advance Bravely:

I read it a long time ago and it’s okayish, with some cute and some weird, problematic characters.

- Addicted/ Heroin:

Also read it (this is 2 books) ages ago...and this one is NOT cute. It starts out as a pretty normal, but kind of toxic very typical oldschool drama/manga romance right down to the step brothers’ trope....and then it keeps escalating to new levels of WTF am I reading?!! All I have to say for this one is, that while I cannot recommend it per se, nor say it’s good, the title really is fitting, bc it is addictive as f.

What I am hoping for from Winner is King ( 烽火流金)

Okay, so at this point, let’s just be reals here, Word of Honor has kinda set the bar for me in terms of standards to expect from the slew of danmei adaptations this year. Granted, I know that there are some who think the way it was adapted was not up to their standards and that it could have been done better, please don’t bring it on this post because this is not the post for it.

In this post, I’m going to talk about Winner is King (*•̀ᴗ•́*)و ̑̑

Now, Sha Po Lang, the original novel, is for me one of the best things that I have read in a very long while. As such, I can be rather precious about what I am hoping to see come alive on the show and what I am hoping will be present in the portrayals I see. I know there are some concerns regarding the script and behind the scenes stuff - and they are very valid concerns that I feel too! - and with the recent announcement that instead of 45 episodes, we are only getting 40, I can foresee that there could be some rushed handlings of the very plotty nature of the source material and perhaps a sense that style can trump substance.

But as the actual show isn’t beaming right into our eyeballs just yet, here are some things I am looking forward to seeing in Winner is King and some things that I am crossing my fingers will make the final cut!

Warning for some novel spoilers ahead. I’ll keep it under the read more.

Things I am looking forward to:

The Changgu dynamic. I think it goes without saying that if the chemistry between your leads is a dud, the show doesn’t need to even pass Go, it can just shuffle itself off the board because it will be dead in the water. The Changgu dynamic has to be nailed; I need to see that self-doubt, that caring for the other but coming at it from the wrong way, that awkwardness that comes with trying to hold back the burden of your love and care because you don’t want to overwhelm the other...

I need Gu Yun to be shamelessly sweet with his words and his coaxing of his Yan Wang from a sulk. I need Changgu saying “I hate you to death, Gu Yun” (pining)

Hu Ge Er. Let me just be clear here, I will cheer when she dies, but I hope that how they handle her characterisation will do her justice. There is no excusing the level of horrible that she is, but I hope that she isn’t written as a single dimension abusive piece of shit. Nuance, is what I am looking for. I need her to be the villain and the reason for Chang Geng.

I. NEED. THE. WOLF. ATTACK. SCENE. OUTSIDE. OF. YANHUI. TOWN. aka The First Time They Meet

There is legit no excuse for them to fuck this up, but the Steampunk elements. I would not know what else to say if they fuck this one thing up that is so integral and basic to the love of this IP. They cannot fuck this up. I am very sure I will join people in rioting if they do.

I need to see my Red Kites, my Heavy and Light Armours, my Dragons... I need to see the steam powered lamps, the iron puppets... I need them to get the Wind Slashers right. I need them to get this world-building right ok? I need to be dropped into this show and just swoon over just how accurate to imagination everything looks. Tencent does have the blessed ability to make very good looking productions, so on this note, I am assured.

I need them to get the human element right; I need to understand why Gu Yun is the way he is, I need to know why the members of the Lin Yuan Pavillion will back Chang Geng and why they won’t. I need to know why Liao Chi would betray the Emperor. I need them to make me feel; I want them to make my heart hurt when Chang Geng’s heart is hurting, I want them to make me cry when Gu Yun is at his lowest and feels like he can’t go on. I want them to make me laugh, I want to feel for Shen Yi and Miss Chen’s awkward courting.

On that note, I hope they get the Shen Yi and Gu Yun dynamic right too! These two are bros ok? Life and death, ride or die, best bros forever and I need, need them to nail just how integral these are to each other and how much they chose each other as family. I need the bickering, I need the protectiveness, I need the banter.

I also need Chang Geng conspiring to marry Shen Yi off quickly so that he can have Gu Yun all to himself lol but lbr here if we can get an ending for this show from Tencent that even breathes the same atmosphere of air as satisfactory I will praise the heavens

The Bone of Impurity. I don’t know to what extent they will cover this or if they would do it the way the book does it, but this being an element that is integral to Chang Geng, I would be surprised if they dropped it entirely. So yeah, I am looking forward to seeing Chang Geng fretting and worrying and getting Bone of Impurity attacks.

Just the way that Gu Yun allows himself to be cared for my Chang Geng and how Chang Geng lets Gu Yun care for him

I want one acupuncture hedgehog scene please and thank you

I do want to see how they handle Chang Geng and his elder half-brother; how that dynamic unfolds will be something to pay some attention to, I think

Oh! That moment when Chang Geng kneels down in front of his brother and tells him to please bury any talk of his marriage and revealing to his brother the scars that he carries from his time living under Hu Ge Er’s roof (this is one brand of Whump that I promise you will hurt you very badly and it will be very good)

The argument at Jiangnan is something I really think will also make the final cut. It wouldn’t make sense to drop it seeing as this is a pivotal shift in their relationship where Chang Geng is finally holding his ground and not bending over backwards and believing everything his Yi Fu says. And this was the catalyst for their four year separation so yeah. I hope they do this justice.

I am not a betting person, but I high key bet that the scene between Gu Yun and the previous Emperor where he tells the man, “If you go, then I won’t have anyone left” and this being the moment that softens the dying fucker’s heart enough to give him a bracelet of beads that will be a major plot point towards the end

THE. BATTLE. SCENES.

Things I am hoping will happen:

At this point, speculation is that the point that tripped Winner Is King up for a recheck was the politics. This year is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party in China and rumour has it that shit be sieving thick and so a lot of shows are erring on the side of caution.

Politics is the highest likelihood of a recheck but I am hoping that it won’t be dumbed down or watered down too much because the politics and the way things played out in the book was absolutely divine and I really want to see that court intrigue and scheming and interplay unfold.

I’ve mentioned in my most recent podcast episode that I am banking on this show to scratch my itch for a Nirvana in Fire level of plottiness and infinite craftiness of the characters and I am crossing all fingers and toes for that to happen because All! The! Characters! Hold! Their! Own! And I need to see that play out please I am not asking for much...

The final sea battle with the Pope. I wouldn’t even know where they would even begin to shoot that scene but this is something I would love to see happen.

The Bone of Impurity attack after Gu Yun sneakily left the capital. That was the scene that caught me and hooked, lined and sinkered me for Chang Geng as a character. Listening to this scene be brought to life in the audio drama has really hammered it home that if they make this bit into the show, I will watch and weep if it is done right.

Cao Niangzi being Cao Niangzi. I am thinking it might not happen the way I want, but I just need them to get them right.

Ge Chen peeing on the enemy’s face. Please. I laughed so hard. I need this. It will be a balm to my soul.

Please, I need Gu Yun’s soul crushing flute playing like I need Gong Jun to always be absolutely horrible at singing because baby this is your niche and this is your charm own it work it

I also need Gu Yun stealing a bamboo flute from a 10 year old because he got jealous please and thank you

Any flashback of Chang Geng and Hu Ge Er before Yanhui Town

I want to see that moment that Gu Yun hears first hand from someone who had knowledge of what Hu Ge Er would do to a baby Chang Geng and the horrible abuse she inflicted on him, because up to that point, he only knew that something went on, but never to the extent that revelation wrought unto him

Any of the Bone of Impurity moments; any mention of it, any visual representation of it... Gosh, just the idea of having the Bone of Impurity made visual is just... Ugh. Yes. Please. The suffering.

[bonus] Things I wish will happen but will probably not:

The hot spring scene or a version of it

An implication that baby cannibalism was involved in the making of a Bone of Impurity

The scene where they get to the goddess doll (the description of it in the book was so bone chilling and if they do this I will have nightmares, I’m just warning you)

I really, really want a scene where, after being crowned Emperor, Chang Geng goes to the frontlines to reclaim the South and upon hearing that he was there, Gu Yun immediately panicked like he was about to be caught with his pants down doing something illegal when all he did was ordered his subordinates to keep news of his injuries from being reported back to the capital

Any flashback of Chang Geng and Hu Ge Er before Yanhui Town; especially when they were with the Barbarians

I want to see some version of Hu Ge Er realising what she has done to her own child and to Chang Geng

Hello again! I hope your month is good to you. Let's talk about Ao Lie! I often wonder why Amnesic Wukong didn't mention him, other than a spoiler, but then I start to think that maybe Ao Lie's unnoticeability was deliberately cultivated. From what I've gleaned, this guy was punished because he wrecked his house and his father's treasury, especially a pearl gifted from the Jade Emperor himself, though the last one is debatable.

Maybe Ao Lie's home life was like Mei's, surrounded by the legacy of the dragon family name with the pressure to uphold it and its dignity, only, Mei's parents truly love and support her even if they don't understand her, but Ao Lie didn't have that. So the pressure got to him, and he had a mental breakdown and started wrecking shit because he had been avoiding the feeling of suffocating under stress until it exploded. This idea is from a fic but I think the trigger for that started with the pearl from JE.

So when the breakdown died down, this guy was standing amongst the wreckage, and goes "oh I gotta GO" and booked it before anyone important could catch him, and had been in hiding ever since, avoiding his family and their associates. In the s4 special flashback, we see Ao Lie approach the SWK and Trip in dragon form first before shifting back to human form. Maybe at first he thought they were looking for him in behalf of his family?

Anyway, he went with them because he feels that his hiding place might be compromised, and during the whole journey he let himself be overlooked to not draw attention to himself. And this continues after afterwards with him not using the family name and just taking the generic Chinese word for "dragon" instead.

Tldr; Ao Lie chose to be overlooked and almost forgotten because he'd rather have that than being used to prop and show off a name that was suffocating him, and has mad a habit of going under the radar.

This is all speculation and headcanon, of course, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. Also some people refer to Mei as "hyperactive voice of reason with a taste for violence" and I give you Ao Lie "chill voice of reason with a taste for arson".

ok, I have to admit that my knowledge of the dragon in JTTW is lackluster BUT I will do my best to analyze his lmk version 🫡 tbh when it comes to the jttw companions i base a lot of their characterizations on what their representation is. for example: while I don’t really study lmk!Sun Wukong on his allegorical self, I do take that aspect of him into consideration when examining his character.

so, when it comes to Ao Lie, he was the personification of the Human Will, aka will power! with him being Tripitaka’s horse, he is physically leading the monk to his destination similar to how it is a human’s will power that allows them to carry on and go through the day (or week or year or hour or something). additionally, the horse/dragon only acts when there is no other way. Monkey King is gone bc plot reasons, Pigsy/Zhu Baije was captured, Sandy/Sha Wujing is either also captured or left to find the preoccupied monkey. Tripitaka’s mind has left him, his heart/desires are futile in helping free him from his demons— basically, the monk is at rock bottom with none of his previously helpful companions to aid him….he is alone and left with nothing BUT his will power (dragon horse, aka Ao Lie) to keep going and get out of the rut.

what I’m trying to say is, Ao Lie with the JTTW companions likely only acts when no one else can. it was fun to see Mei and her ancestor clash like that because Mei is so used to acting first and always being there to protect, meanwhile we have Ao Lie who also wants to protect but is more cautious about it. he has definitely been in enough situations to be more conservative on when to use his dragon form and powers.

and yeah, idk i don’t see his aversion for using his powers has anything to do with being caught by his family that he left. I could be remembering wrong, but didn’t his family banish him in the book? idk, I skimmed that part 😅 but uh…..

WHICH LEADS US TO HIS SPECULATIVE BACKSTORY 👀 so yeah, based on the JTTW books, Ao Lie’s character caused a huge scene enough to get him banished and sent to some river, meeting Guanyin who assigned him the role of being one of Tripitaka’s companions. while lmk does hold true to the core and thematic feels of JTTW, it also takes its own spin on certain story events or plots to their own liking (see Red Son’s whole Samadhi Fire backstory that is very different from the book). so I can definitely see lmk having Ao Lie’s home life to reflect Mei’s with distinct contrast (when Mei’s home got trashed in s1 despite it being her responsibility to look after it, her parents sympathized with her and were more focused on their daughter; Ao Lie setting fire to some very important items that his family was responsible for and was banished by HIS parents for being irresponsible)

one thing I am noticing lmk doing with the “reincarnations” of the JTTW companions is that even if they have a strong connection to their “past life” there is still a distinct difference that makes the lmk characters separate from that past. Pigsy and Zhu Baije both love cooking, but Pigsy is more compassionate and selfless, disliking people who are self-centered and a slob. Tang and Tripitaka are both scholars and cowards and damsels in distress (yes they are no one is allowed to fight me), but Tang is no afraid to give into his desires and even criticizes his past self’s ideology.

[i won’t mention Sandy bc I don’t believe he is a reincarnation]

But yeah, it is fascinating to see how the past and future clash in their ideologies. Especially Mei and Ao Lie because their idea of power and protection is similar yet different! Mei would go through any length to save her friends. Ao Lie is aware if his limits and what greater harm he could cause for his friends if he acted like Mei. (I am too tired to get the quotes from the episode but you know the one. How Ao Lie criticizes Mei for getting caught in her recklessness and how rushing in DIDNT help her or her friends.)

basically, I doubt Ao Lie’s in-show reason for being conservative about his powers has to do with him trying to hide from his family that he fled to avoid punishment. I do believe he saved his dragon abilities because of family drama tho. Also, need more parallels between him and Mei because they make me happy :)

now a d class personal is pretty much seen as disposable test subject for the workers and so pony always scared shitless

basically pony was assigned w dealing w curly and so the workers in the organization put them together in this room to see what would happen

before this curly was EXTREMELY aggressive cause bro was in there with no consent, ion blame him

but yea, he saw pony n thought he looked pretty chill and so they stroked up a conversation which was WILD bc the last person to try to talk to curly got hurt but so far pony was doing really well

then the workers watching them realized curly started flirting w pony and it was like nothing new bc they knew that’s one way he worked his whole mind powers sha bang, but they realized something was off

like they noticed curly was getting a TAD bit too into it and realized curly was like legit trying to flirt w pony to get w him

everyone watching was like “oh….oh no😟😟”

and long story short it took a long time to get pony out the testing room bc curly wanted him to stay longer

even LONGER story short, they tried putting pony w a different SCP to avoid that situation but curly wasn’t having it, and so pony was but back w curly, and now the workers have to keep a REALLY close eye on them now

might actually make hcs on how their relationship works later cause this is getting too long🤺

The Zhao Jing and Scorpy relationship is based on Sha Po Lang's ChangGu. The Yifu x adopted son dynamic. It's ok if it's only reference but unfortunately, it seems there are dialogues from SPL novel used for their lines in the drama. Isn't that almost plagiarism?

won’t be answering any more of these asks after this because i think i’ve made my stance quite clear in the previous ask :D but since you brought it up:

1. i’m not sure what you’ve been watching, but there are plenty of yifu - son relationships going around in plenty of wuxia shows, albeit nothing to suggest it is romantic. this yifu-son trope thing is NOT an exclusive trope to changgu, don’t be that person and start claiming that tropes/relationships mirror a particular danmei novel or any novel etc. or that in this case, spl frickin invented yifu-son romance (i mean we see more yifu-daughter maybe but that's because of the nature of the film industry)

my point is yifus are a THING in historical wuxias, any baidu page will tell you that if you simply google search - as are a lot of things you see in historical danmeis, i honestly cannot say with ANY certainty that any trope is unique

2. zhaoxie cp is a crack ship - the writer didn’t write it in a bromantic way - what do you mean it’s based on changgu? she didn’t intend for it to be romantic or construed as such, at the very least she never wrote a romantic line for these two. changgu is an actual ship and relationship

3. i made it very clear in the previous ask that:

(1) she probably knew that we were going to be able to see the lines and recognize them and i say this with certainty, scriptwriters, or at least this one is no dumb bij, and i doubt she thinks her fans are dumbasses either

(2) no dumbass would ‘steal’ iconic lines from recognizable works and feed it to an audience who is very familiar with the author’s works, and expect to get away with it

(3) she wasn’t expecting to ‘get away’ with ‘plagiarism’ exactly because she was paying homage to those works - the LOGIC of fucking plagiarism is that when i steal a line or steal a work or an artpiece i expect to get away with it because no one’s going to notice for whatever reason which brings me to the next point-

(4) she’s a dedicated priest fan who knows what she’s doing - she probably thought it was cute that she’s referencing other famous pipi works THAT ARE ACTUALLY coming out as live actions. think about it, if she was really gonna plagiarize i’d pick shan he biao li or like some other obscure works of pipi rather than the two that are literally JUST COMING up and are her two most popular works?

(5) she used luo yiguo and the ziliu jun thingy in the script which comes from both modu and spl - i don’t see ppl yelling about that either, we were more excited than not that there were priest easter eggs in the show, yeah maybe it would have helped smoothed things over if she went like oh yeah i dropped easter eggs in these rather than keeping quiet on it but ??? let the woman live

(6) it’s all priest works why the hell you guys having some internal war right now? are yall scared that shl/woh will ‘take away’ attention from the upcoming works etc. or doesn’t deserve its populariy? well news flash:

- its popularity didn’t increase JUST BECAUSE she put in some lines from other pipi works if that makes or breaks any sort of show a lot more shows will be a hell lot more successful if this is a formula for success

tldr - she’s tipping her hat off to other iconic works that are UPCOMING live actions in a cheeky manner. i don’t think she thinks the audience, who are priest fans, are dumbfucks who wouldn’t recognize lines from their fave other pipi works.

it’s all a bit of fun, and unless pipi steps up and goes, “yeah, the shan he ling scriptwriter stole lines from one of my works and put it in the very accurately presented live action of another work, which oh, happens to be mine as well!!!! and she should be shot for it” we should all just chill the hell out

How I feel about this character: i fell in love with fo-ye literally yesterday. cause like. ok ok it was so funny cause i started mystic nine under the impression that fo-ye was like. an old wise dude cause zhang rishan was always like “my master. fo-ye. i must follow His Path.” so i thought fo-ye was just gonna be chilling at ninety but then HE TURNED OUT TO BE GORGEOUS??? LIKE HOLY SHIT SIR. but I was still on the M9 bus for zhang baby rishan and thEN i saw a behind the scenes blooper clip where William Chan laughed and i was gone. sorry. i love him now.

also writing the Fo-Ye scenes in Swiftly Tilting ended me and i would like to formally sue myself for emotional damages

All the people I ship romantically with this character: i am a firm supporter of the er-ye/yatou/fo-ye/xinyue polycule. They would all?? be perfect together?? also it just makes sense. fo-ye is literally SO GAY for er-ye it’s insane. This man sold all of his shit for er-ye. he would do anything for him. and I think that he and Yatou would also get along very well?? like they’re the two introverts of the group, and they have quiet chats over tea while er-ye teaches xinyue stage combat in the yard. and i genuinely really like him and xinyue together! she’s so bright and feisty and doesn’t take any of fo-ye’s shit! also (im only on episode fourteen so this might become True Canon later) i headcanon that zhang rishan ADORES xinyue and they’re like. best friends. xinyue is vp of the fo-ye fanclub only bc zhang rishan is way too good at being president.

also they’re all like. real actual adults?? like they have their SHIT together i just want them to live happily ever after with each other in domestic bliss and invite fuba over for dinner. and also they have the biggest bed known to man bc xinyue does NOT like cuddling when sleeping and also she kicks and er-ye always has to be the big spoon bc he’s a caretaker at his core and yatou like sleeping on the outside bc she doesn’t want to feel trapped and fo-ye secretly takes a lot of comfort in being in the middle of cuddle piles bc he likes being able to tell where everyone is subconsciously so they have like a specially built bed that’s like a double king so they can all sleep together but also have their preferences be met. damn why did i write so much about their bed. uh anyway. polycule rights

(also i kinda ship fo-ye/Third Prince bc all of their interactions at the auction WERE FUCKING ADORABLE)

My non-romantic OTP for this character: ZHANG BROS BABBBBYYYYY also i really like his relationship with ba-ye??? i would never ship them romantically (mostly bc ba-ye is Way Too Done with fo-ye at literally any moment) but they are SO GONE FOR EACH OTHER PLATONICALLY. like episode one we had fo-ye coming in to kick Everyone’s asses and save ba-ye and if that doesn’t give u BroTP vibes i don’t know what will. Also love all of the ba-ye and fo-ye Life Changing Field trips.

My unpopular opinion about this character: he’s kind of a dick??? like not overtly and not a lot but like. he sort of ruined peng sanbian’s life (not that peng sanbian was a particularly good person) and his marriage?? and he arrested chen pi for like no reason instead of just talking to him and then fucked off to beiping and let zhang rishan deal with that mess. and he’s constantly going behind er-ye’s back and manipulating him into doing things and also that one scene where he made zhang rishan and ba-ye just stand there and watch while he investigated the Weird Tomb when he KNOWS that zhang baby rishan would literally be so anxious the entire time and inevitably Fuck Something Up due to his constantly need to Be of Help to Fo-Ye. And don’t even get me STARTED on whatever the fuck he was doing in Gutongjing. And making Zhang Rishan feel like he could never move on or be happy bc he had to follow him, even in death. and i think he knows that he’s doing it, too

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I WISH WE KNEW FOR SURE HOW HE DIED I WISH WE KNEW THIS. it feels like there’s something so huge missing there and i want to find out about it ASAP. like. we sort of have an idea of it but he’s so intertwined with Gutongjing and Jiumen and Warehouse 11 that it seems super remiss to just leave out his death and the events surrounding it, but then again the series isn’t finished so if we get fo-ye death backstory in sha hai 2 i’m committing atrocities
