Your bedroom was a space sadly quieter than even the outdoors. For at least on your doorstep, the sounds of crickets were heard, the mechanical noises of distant construction were there—but here, there was not even a sound.

Perhaps you were too sensitive. But you also thought a spouse had every right to feel love and respect from their husband, and you felt none of that. The suffocation of this Fontaine air only brought up an even more suffocating man, and you fear you may lose your breath before even coming to your senses.

“You’re up late.” He stood right behind you at the opening of the balcony. Of course, you didn’t hear him coming from inside that silent fortress of a household. “Shouldn’t you be in bed?”

His words—you wish he didn’t say them, for they’ll unwillingly fill your thoughts with the idea that he cares. But sometimes ( or perhaps most ), you were too foolish to counteract that.

“Couldn’t sleep,” you simply said, continuing to stare out into the blue aura of the nation. A technicolor world made of music and machine—but unfortunately, your husband was only like a machine. “Was so caught up awake, completely immersed by your current court performance,” you yawned sarcastically.

He grumbled, “It’s a court hearing, not a silly performance.” Then, he joined you at the bar of the balcony, perhaps far too distanced from you for your liking. He was never next to you; always paces away just light tonight. “And I’ve been telling you, I can sign you up as a spectator or part of the jury.”

You almost snarled after he failed to pick up your sarcasm. “I’d rather die before you did that,” you scoffed. “Me? Sitting in that stuffy courthouse whilst you talk for hours? If it were my way, Her Grace would’ve had her way a long time ago. Perhaps you can learn from her, sometime. It can loosen you up for once.” He turned to glare at you.

“Oh, spare me the levity.” From the way he suddenly straightened his back, presenting himself a towering height over you, you knew you were about to be scolded. “If you cannot take the Court of Fontaine for what it is instead of a laughing stock, than perhaps you should be the next one on a treason hearing for exile.”

Your stomach dropped. As inconceivable as it sounded, you wouldn’t put it past him with how booming his tone was. And… coming from your own husband… “I wasn’t trying to be disrespectful, good Monsieur.” To very man that wore your wedding band. “But spare me one truth…”

“Right now, are you my husband, or are you the Chief Justice?”

You immediately regretted the question once his eyes looked ready to kill.

You could only see the light from the cold glass of your window, or the freshest air from your porch. Sometimes the fresh sea breeze of the harbor, but that was more of a rarity.

You loved Liyue Harbor; so did your husband. Living in Jueyun Karst was safe, sure, but it was boring. And maybe, there was a time that you loved the harbor so much during Lantern Rite—a time where lanterns graced the sky and fireworks were heard all the way from your small home in Minlin. So much, in fact, you almost felt like Rapunzel in those fairytale books when she leaped out of the comforts of her tower to chase the lights.

And even moreso like Rapunzel when Zhongli saw you at the harbor with a look of horror on his face, not caring of the genuine smile you carried before dragging you away by the wrist. Perhaps it was then that you felt more like his scolded child than his ‘beloved’ spouse.

Could he not see the light in your eyes as you pranced around the harbor? Could he not understand how boring it was to be cooped up in the mountains for your ‘safety’? It sucked, it really did. And it sucked even more once you tasted freedom at the harbor, once you met people that would never shackle down your life to never experience the many joys that Liyue had to offer.

“Am I your partner, or your controlled child?!” you seethed once he dragged you back inside the house.

“I am simply bringing you back after you failed to listen to me,” Zhongli calmly stated. Calm, he was also so calm, emotions be damned. “I told you not to go to the harbor, especially on your own. Have I told you what happened before through the tale of Osial?”

You coughed out in exasperation. “You’re acting like this during a festival?” There was a clear betrayal in your voice—it was truly something he had been hiding from you all this time. “You’re just going to let me be locked up in here, because you think a festival is unsafe?”

“It’s for your protection.”

“‘Protection’, give me a break, Zhongli.” You were near desperate to go back, like once you got an inch of freedom, you suddenly needed it all—but perhaps he only saw you like a partner who needs to be more controlled. “I married you for all your adventurous tales,” you reasoned. “You sounded much more excitingly interesting than you actually are, I fear.”

He continued to stare at you, face hardening into something of a glare like a parent disciplining a child. You hated it. You hated this, you hated him. And as he walked back out with the door locked by some force, you could only wonder how you married a man so cruel.

“You know I love you.”

The large pads of his fingers massaged coarsely through your hair at the very top of your head, brushing the your scalp almost delicately like a doll.

“Right?”

It felt almost like Hell itself to feel flutters in your stomach from the way the deep mess of his voice resounded in your ears. It was akin to signing a contract with the devil, like this feeling of infatuation was a demon’s sickly trick. “I do.”

He hummed in contentment. Not like you pleased him with your answer, but like you answered him correctly, as if this some sort of test where there was only one right answer.

He had you seated down on his lap, and it still made you feel like a doll. But there was an uncertainty in it—one that made you question if you should be feeling used and disgusted, or in love with being pampered by your husband like this.

You married a leading man of the most dangerous elites. Perhaps the fluttering feelings pulling at your heart were more of a warning sign than something good, but you couldn’t help it when he made you feel so special. Special words, special treatment—so painfully addicting and so obvious to win your favor for your hand in marriage.

“When the time comes,” he whispered once more, as if speaking the holy words only pure lovers could dare to hear, “would you die for me?”

You should’ve know this was coming, truly. It should’ve been clear the moment he courted you, and painfully obvious once he wanted to wed you. A puppet he could control at his will, someone who looked so innocent compared to the dangerous looks of the Fatui—a person easily stricken by love and compliments, easily you.

But he captured your heart in a way that was devouring, like your love was swallowed into a black hold the moment you showed any weakness. He trapped you in a web you could not escape once pulled in, and you feared you were truly doomed from the start. But that was how the leader of the Harbingers worked; and that was how you gave up your life.

“Yes, I would.”

What perfect timing. Since your marriage to the formerly disgraced queen, you haven't had any time to tend to your garden yourself. Once upon a time, it had been a safe haven from all your troubles. The expectations thrust upon you by loved ones, the mockery of those in your kingdom who knew you'd never live up to kings and queens of past lives had not weight on you within those four walls. As your bond with her grew, it wasn't long before that same security could be found in your bride's arms.

The duty of caring for your garden was placed into the hands of your most trusted staff as you spent all your hours with her. Though there should be no secret between you, you were rather embarrassed of the state of your garden and had faith your servants would care for your dear plants till you had the heart to weed out the imperfections.

The maid offers the flowers to you in a clear, glass vase - a pair of gloves rested next to the piece on its tray. Amaryllis belladonna, a gorgeous specimen, yet its toxins can be absorbed by touch alone. Your family forbid such dangerous flowers in the past, but there was no one left to stop you now.

Creak-

"...Did you hear that?"

Equipping your gloves, a small groan rasps from the walls of your castle. Could possibly be the floor setting - but even that didn’t seem to be the cause. You look to your left, then your right - returning your gaze to the equally as puzzled maid who politely shakes her head.

"I didn't hear a thing."

"Hm.... Ah, well-" Adjusting your gloves, you pluck a single lily from the vase - bending foward to catch it as it slides from your fingertips. The vibrant pink is a stark contrast to the blacks of your gloves. If only you could witness their beauty in its truest form. In a way, this flower reminded you a lot of her. Your wife couldn't be touched most circumstances, but with the right tools-

Wait a second-

Have you....always been this much taller than this maid? She was on the shorter side than other's amongst your staff, but now it appeared that though you're an entire head taller - and growing. It's at this same moment the weightlessness beneath your feet becomes apparent. The ends of your shoes scrape the floorboards briefly before you're suddenly pulled back through the air like a puppet on its strings. The maid's eyes bulge in horror as numerous, shadowy limbs descend from the high ceiling - sharp claws snipping the strings tied to the back of your clothing as you fall into your beloved arms.

"Oh... It's you. For a moment there I thought I had gone through a rather late growth spurt."

As happy as you are to see her, the pleasantries don't seem to be as mutual for your wife. Posion oozes from her fangs, all eyes turned on the little pest who dared step towards what was her without her permission. A frightened yelp sounds from the girl as the carpet at her feet sizzles from the downpour of venom dripping from your wife's jaws. She looked about ready to rip the poor thing limb from limb. That won't do-

"And....perfect!"

Strains of stray hair fall into the queen's face as you tuck the lily behind her ear. Considering she is no longer human, you doubt it'd have any effects on her. The softness in her two sideview eyes settles to over remainder of her once sharp, vicious gaze.

"My Belladonna.... You have to do better about this temper of yours...."

Belladonna...? That is not her name. She hasn't had one in....centuries. A tear stains her cheek, brushed away by your gentle touch.

"I'm sorry, it's just now that I've realized I have nothing to call you by. Is that okay - or would you prefer... Amaryllis?"

"Either....Either is alright as long as it's from you."

Hurried footsteps trail away from the scene as your overprotective wife embraces you - making sure to rid the posion from her lips as she kiss you as if it were her last.

Of course! Here's some Marcoh content :) Sorry for the long wait! I hope I get his character correctly!

Yandere! Marcoh Concept

Pairing: Romantic

Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Overprotective behavior, Manipulation, Violence, Clingy behavior, Blood, Murder, Death, Kissing, Dubious/Forced relationship.

Marcoh used to be a thug before jumping on the train due to being on the run.

He was raised in the streets and often got into fights, even if he didn't like it.

Despite seeming intimidating... Marcoh doesn't actually like the idea of killing.

Looking past his built stature, Marcoh is a protective and friendly sweetheart who genuinely wants to do good.

When you first meet him, he's on the train.

He comes off as reserved, timid/shy despite his unnerving gaze.

He's very cooperative with you when you speak with him.

He towers over you... yet seems so considerate.

He's more of a gentle giant than anything, but knows how to defend himself and others.

Marcoh is remorseful about his past and even expresses in some dialogues about wanting to move on.

(His Abandoned Shack Dialogue is adorable-)

You probably ask Marcoh to join your party, even offering to help Olivia find a wheelchair to take her with you.

Marcoh seems surprised for a moment but agrees.

After all, isn't there safety in numbers?

Marcoh is such a teddy bear at times.

To others he's this intimidating thug and boxer, one who could obliterate someone in seconds.

But with you? He opens up and even makes insightful dialogue on certain areas.

You can't help but smile sadly when he brings up the idea of settling down with someone or retiring....

He still has dreams... but you aren't sure if escape from this festival is possible.

With Marcoh, his dark behavior slowly grows within him.

Honestly, his biggest concern is making sure his fellow contestant(s) safe.

He may not enjoy fighting... but it's an important skill he even tries to teach you.

Marcoh's feelings slowly begin to take over as he strolls beside you.

For example, when he mentions about having a new start in life... he thinks of you.

Never wants to say it... but he can't help but glance over at you in thought.

I just like the idea of this big strong man being so timid around his love.

He hovers around you like a body guard, but while he looks scary he's just resisting the urge to hug you close.

Marcoh would want nothing more than to protect his beloved during the festival.

No matter what it takes.

This is a man who could beat the life out of someone, blood covering his hands and clothes...

But then he'd coo over you, check if you're hurt, and kiss your forehead or something.

He's mostly a sweetheart.

He isn't sadistic, just concerned and wanting to protect those he cares about.

Marcoh tries his best not to scare you.

He knows his strength comes off in such a way... but he promises he just wants to protect you.

Marcoh isn't really one to get jealous easily.

If he is, he usually keeps to himself and says nothing about it.

Of course you should have other party members... strength in numbers...

But sometimes he wishes he was the only one you needed.

He's somewhat lucid about his darker feelings, which is why he's quiet about it.

Although... the festival's whispers certainly do nothing to help his emotions.

Marcoh's behavior has stages during the festival, if we're assuming the festival influences yandere obsessions.

At first he's silent with his emotions, just acting as a body guard.

However, as you gain party members and continue to face horrors beyond your comprehension... Marcoh's sanity dwindles and his feelings turn darker.

The longer he's with you he starts to open up more... perhaps even developing softer and more romantic emotions towards you.

Okay... maybe he is jealous that he has to share you with two others...

But why do these feelings feel so... wrong?

Marcoh's dwindling sanity no doubt makes his feelings towards you corrupt due to the fesitval.

He wants to confess... but he was hoping to do that once you both survive.

How tragic.

He may be quiet, but he keeps glaring daggers at your other party members.

Eventually... Marcoh isn't going to be a sweetheart anymore.

Soon, due to the festival, you're going to be sitting in a puddle of blood... encased in Marcoh's arms.

You see... there's just so much danger in this Festival/Prehevil in general.

All this whispers just keep getting to Marcoh....

Perhaps said murderous whispers are right? You'll be in danger if he doesn't help you....

What better way to help than kill the other contestants near you before they do the same to you?

To be fair, Marcoh tries for a long time to ignore the voices.

He lasts until mid-way through Day 3 before he snaps.

By the end of it, he's covered in blood and has you tightly secured in his lap as he leans against a wall.

He whispers apologies, saying he didn't want to scare you...

You keep squirming, even after he kisses your forehead, lips, and neck...

He's trying so hard to comfort you.

You're sobbing, covered in blood like him as he tightens his grip.

"So sorry... I just needed to do this. Can't you hear the voices? They were going to take you from me... I'm protecting you like I should!"

It's such a drastic change.

When you first met, he just wanted to help everyone.

Now, as your fates come to a close and the final deadline ticks down, Marcoh killed your party... it's just you.

It will always just be you...

Right up until you Moonscorch together.

"I'll never leave you... I'm just sorry I couldn't get us out of here... but that's okay, at least we have each other...!"

•Julie was a cheerleader in high school and was very popular, unfortunately, most people only thought of her as a bimbo :(((

•Wally on the other hand wasn't that popular but was well-liked by everyone. A lot of people had a crush on him~

•Julie's siblings don't like Wally very much 😭 not because they have something against him or anything, they're just super overprotective of Julie! They tolerate him though

•Wally picked up gardening from Julie! Occasionally his plants die though he's gotten so much better at taking care of them. He's patiently waiting for his apple tree to grow

•Julie speaks Spanish fluently. She wanted to learn Spanish when she started dating him. It was a bit hard for her but with the help of Wally she got the hang of it~

•Wally works as an art teacher at an elementary school. He's really good with kids, all the moms love him ;) (not that he cares, he only has eyes for his beloved Julie)

•Julie has a thing for high-heeled shoes!!! She really enjoys the ‘clacking’ sound they make

•Wally sleep talks, boy was Julie not thrilled to be awoken up by Wally's “I'm sleeping” the first time they shared a bed. She's gotten used to it by now~

•Julie is really flirty! She's loud and confident when she flirts with Wally but she also turns into a hot mess whenever he flirts back! He sure knows how to make a girl swoon

•Wally has an ungodly amount of paintings in his home of Julie he painted way before they started dating, he only ever gave her his best work

•Julie is not good at baking, she either tends to spill the batter or burn them. However it's appreciated whenever they DO turn out good, the house smells delightful

•Julie owns a hair salon and works as a hairdresser. She's the one to cut Wally's hair because he doesn't trust anyone else to do it

•Wally is very good at playing baseball, he's usually the pitcher since he has an incredibly good aim. Julie finds it attractive~

another rarepair but overtarn my beloved psychopaths <3 anyway mer overtarn mating probably results in the research facility evacuating the whole building in case all the staff witness the horrors of two aggressive mers almost breaking the thick bulletproof glass while fucking. it may look like an extra violent murder with all the clawing growling fighting and blood making the pool light pink but its just a lil breeding sesh between two loving mates <3

and then the staff doesnt know what to do with the huge pregnant siren with killer voice and the giganormous overprotective brute who scares all of the visitors away even more now than ever <3

oh hell yes i LOVE overtarn. our two psychopaths in love <33

A facility very early into their research days managing to contain Tarn and Overlord, both of them freshly discovered giant sea monsters that have gotten nice and big after years of killing and eating land-dwelling mechs. They’re not too sure if they should be keeping them both in the same tank (or if they should be keeping them at all) as they appear to really dislike each other, but one, they haven’t hurt each other gravely yet, and two, there is no way they’re luring either of them onto a stretcher again. One vet check-up was enough to cause an extreme ruckus, Overlord had to be tased and shot with several tranquilizer darts before he finally passed out and they could safely scan him as fast as possible before dumping him back into the tank. Tarn, on the other end of the facility, was much calmer, but once in the veterinarian's room he managed to kill a worker with one swift swing of his claws and was dumped into the tank without a scan. One scan from Overlord is enough for their research purposes, surely…

Things are going pretty alright, their tank is to be avoided unless completely necessary and the staff work on researching the other, slightly more docile mers they have in store… until Tarn and Overlord start acting strange. Their “disliking each other” turns into complete, unbridled aggression, the two mers fighting at least twice a day, leaving one another scratched and bleeding all around the tank (Overlord and Tarn are displaying mating dances, how sweet <33) The staff is not sure what’s happening until finally all hell breaks loose in their tank. Overlord appears to be… killing Tarn. He’s holding him down, biting into his neck, Tarn is clawing at him violently in a pointless struggle, their tails are intertwining (Overlord’s spike forcing itself into Tarn’s valve slit, spreading it open and hitting the duct of his gestation tank roughly with each thrust, Tarn moaning in pleasure, his claws leaving marks on Overlord’s frame to make sure everyone knows he belongs to him. Overlord tearing chunks off of Tarn and swallowing, keeping pieces of his mate inside him as yet another part of his mating/dominance play) and the staff is told to leave before they manage to break down the glass and flood the whole place.

Meanwhile, Tarn and Overlord are having the time of their life, swimming around in a pool of their own spilled energon and grinding their tails against each other until they’ve reached another mutual overload.

When the staff comes back, the glass wasn’t broken and the two seemed to have mellowed out a bit… by the time the filtration system clears the water they’re lazily rolling against each other, still deeply mutilated, but they’re calmed down now... The researchers slowly realize the horrors they’ve witnessed through the cameras was a mating ritual… which means there’s going to me more of them. More violent, murderous killer mers. In their research facility.

also, hell yes, Overlord doing displays of dominance towards the researchers and scienstis, extending his spike and rubbing it against the glass until they’ve left with grossed-out winces on their face-plates, mating Tarn in front of the cameras to make sure there’s no mistake in who he belongs to...

He doesn’t wish to underestimate your strength, knowing it has the capability of upsetting you, but he wants you safe so.damn.badly. The man wouldn’t know what on Mobius to do with himself if he allowed you to get hurt in one way or another.

He most likely just lets out a singular chuckle of his own at your hyper demeanour and allows you to cling to him with no hesitance. You truly are an endearing soul in his eyes. And how you’re so dead set on keeping him in high priority and ensure his safety wherever you both go, it truly just results in him being all wrapped around your little finger if you look deeper into it. And despite the risk of his position, he completely allows it to happen too. He trusts you with all his might and the things you do for him among the dimensions only makes that devotion grow even stronger. I could for example see you protecting the fox with your life whenever you both end up in a world that hold an endangered environment. You just insist and ensure he stays in the back while you deal with the little issue yourself, leaving him to stare in awe at your form in combat.

I certainly believe you’d get along with Amy quite a lot aswell. Especially when being in similar positions when it comes to travelling through the multiverse and often needing Tails to guide you two through the place, the both of you are able to relate a lot on your current conditions. You did feel a little bad for letting Amy be brainwashed like she had been though, but then again, it was what he desired for the quest after all. And regrettably saying, your priorities just seem to find themselves in the wrong direction. You try your best to not let the dimensions get to your head, but it can become hard due to just how much your companions alone have been caught up in it over the course of time.

What would have happened if Maegara lost her eye and not Aemond?

oh daemon would have not let that shit go. if by some chance, maegara had intervened in order to protect aemond due to her not wanting him to be hurt and luke had injured her in the same manner as in canon, everyone would just be frozen in horror.

maegara, who has a reputation for being this sweet child who picks flowers and smiles like the sun, nicknamed the realm's sunshine, wails as she clutches at her injured eye, and everyone just scrambles to help.

daemon would just lose it. seeing his beloved child, his lovely daughter, the other half of his rotten heart having her eye stitched as she's being comforted by rhaenys would just gut him.

aleksander literally has to be restrained by every guard nearby because if you think this guy won't fight a child, you're wrong. he is feral and super overprotective, he will fight lucerys.

rhaenyra is horrified but still defends her son against aemond and accuses aemond of manipulating maegara to gain her support and use her as a shield to defend himself but maegara is too delirious from the blood loss to refute it unfortunately.

everyone is so utterly horrified and the arguement breaks out as she's delirious from both blood loss and the mediciation that the maesters gave to her.

aleksander and daemon would definitely hold a grudge for this entire situation, against both aemond and lucerys and by relation they'd hold grudges against rhaenyra AND alicent.

i don't think maegara would put a gem in her empty eye socket. but i do think she'd make her own eyepatch in the shape of a blooming rose which earns her the nickname 'blooming rose' in gossip circles.

i think that whole event would scar her pretty badly to the point that she'll be incredibly tense and uncomfortable around knives.

Slow Damage is a love letter to survivors- to those who have scars, both visible and not.

To me, it was wholly unlike many other visual novels or dating sim games I’ve played before.

In fact, it feels a bit unfair to view the game as just a series of different character routes that end with the guy of your choice because, ultimately, it’s TOWA’S story. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

So! Here is my absolute monster of an essay about my thoughts on each of the routes (both before and after playing the whole game), as well as their different endings. For reference, I played Rei->Taku->Madarame->Fujieda, which ended up influencing my pre-/post-True Route feelings a lot.

Rei’s Route

Pre-True Route: Rei is a totally sweetheart, and as much as I love Towa, he can do better. Not to say that I didn’t like them together! They just seem like better friends than lovers, especially considering this route was so heavily focused on all of Rei’s issues, and neither directly explored nor resolved any of Towa’s, which… felt pretty unsatisfying and unsustainable for a long-term relationship.

This route was noticeably longer than the others, but since I played it first, I enjoyed really getting to know all the characters of Shinkoumi more thoroughly. It explored gender expectations and dysphoria in a direction that I wasn’t expecting, and I was pleasantly surprised by how well it was handled. Kirihara’s arc was disturbing (a nice teaser for the theme of cycles of abuse throughout the game), but seemed tame in terms of violence compared to Ikuina’s arc.

Mad End: EYE-PUSSY!!! ME-MANKO(?)!!! Jokes aside though, this was both sadder and less traumatic than I was expecting after the whole Ikuina business. I was a little confused about how Rei could turn out like he did here, though Towa letting himself become Rei’s opinionless sex doll didn’t surprise me. Ultimately, I think this was supposed to show how both of them had given up on ever being understood by others; Rei turned to inflicting violence in the hopes of affirming what he BELIEVES a man represents without actually making the scarier choice to change and grow as a person, while Towa decides to waste away his remaining days not as a person, but as a sexual object.

Euphoria End: Towa drinking water!?!? In my edgy grimdark game!? (I was honestly so shocked that I ended up having to reread lines since I was so distracted by our beloved protagonist actually hydrating with something other than alcohol.) This ending was so cute! Tooth-rotting fluff! Rei’s haircut was another shock, but I think it was important for us as the players to SEE him grow into the person he wanted to become, so I liked it. Despite none of Towa’s issues being resolved in this route, I think he has a lot of hope in this ending. He’ll be loved, and dragged into living a healthier and more fulfilling life by Rei’s stubborn refusal to let him waste away. They’ll travel the world, make new friends, and continue to grow and change as people.

Post-True End: I appreciate this route a lot more after finishing the whole story. While my dissatisfaction with how Towa’s issues don’t get addressed still stand, I felt like that may be the point of Rei’s route.

You don’t need to confront and overcome all your past trauma in order to have hope for a happier life. You have to WANT a happier life though, and I think we get to see Towa do so here in a much healthier way than in other routes. (I’m looking at you, Madarame.)

As stated in-game, Rei’s route focuses a lot on the contradictions that come with being a human, and in that sense, I can appreciate how Rei and Towa fit together.

Taku’s Route

Pre-True Route: Oof. Taku – babygirl, I love me a good overprotective yandere, but this route HURT me.

From the unsettling topic of pedophilia in Asakura's arc, to Taku’s shame revolving around drugs, to the horror of what was implied about Towa’s past, I was tense basically until the credits rolled.

I spent a majority of the time frustrated with Taku’s refusal to communicate, and at Towa for not pushing harder…but by the end, I was so, so invested in them getting their happy ending.

Shame and control were the themes of this route, and those are difficult topics to handle well, but I think N+C did a good job here.

One of my favorite moments was when Taku rightly points out that Towa’s obsession with pain isn’t just for sexual gratification, but as a way to punish himself. FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT!! I like to imagine this gets picked up again once Taku is out of jail.

Mad Ending: PAIN AND SUFFERING. I’m not entirely sure why, but I think this ending was the most upsetting for me (though it may be tied with Fujieda’s Mad End.). Maybe because it was more realistic? (On a side note, props to N+C for clearly doing some actually research about drugs. I am SICK of anime and manga acting like taking ANY drug will give you reefer madness.) I saw Taku giving in to his desire to control Towa as just another manifestation of his shame, and in for a penny, in for a pound, right? So he slowly destroys himself, his morals, Towa, and any genuine love they had for each other. Meanwhile, Towa loses the only adult he ever felt safe with, and is doomed to die isolated and in fear. I hate thinking about it.

Euphoria Ending: I cried!! I was really proud of Taku for owning up to his decisions, and I loved that Towa learned that it’s possible to trust others. They may have been separated for two years, but their feelings only grew stronger during that time. I found it a bit funny that they had Towa wearing a totally different color scheme to show his growth (and to look good while standing under the cherry blossoms), while our resident old man came out of prison looking beefy. Loved that Towa mentions how Rei supported him during those two years without Taku. The only thing that left me conflicted was how Taku clearly knew a lot about Towa’s past, and how he had no intention of ever telling him.

Post-True Route: Taku, you fucker, I feel betrayed!!!!! I still like him and his route a lot, but all the discomfort I felt about his connection to Towa’s past has only been magnified tenfold! How much did he really know about what Maya was doing to Towa? Surely, as his doctor, Taku would have known for at least a few years that something really fucked up was happening to this child. I’m uncomfortable thinking about all the implications.

Madarame’s Route

Pre-True Route: Ah, yes. The fandom discourse creator, picking up the mantle left by Shiki of TNC and Mink of DMMD.

I was sad to watch what felt like Towa backsliding into his fucked up coping methods again after seeing the progress he made in Taku’s route, but ‘sane and safe’ is not the name of the game here.

In the end, I had a lot of fun playing his route and actually wished it was as long as the other three, especially since it gave us a lot of new worldbuilding and plot progression, as well as a showing us a big chunk of Towa’s past that had only been previously hinted at.

Granted, I spent a majority of the time trying to figure out just who the hell this guy was… Like, what drives him? What does he feel for Towa? What will he do if XYZ situation occurs? Much like our protagonist, I struggled to get any kind of read on him, so I was left feeling kind of frustrated by the time I finished his route.

Mad Ending: I mostly just found myself cringing through this ending. It was only while reading the last few lines and listening to the ending theme that I started to feel sad. I do think Madarame cared for Towa in his own way, but they have no hope for a happy ending here. Obviously, Towa is fucked; whether he kills Madarame or not, he can never go back to who he was. He’s not human, he’s Madarame’s dog. Meanwhile, Madarame clearly isn’t satisfied in this ending, especially if he WISHES Towa would go through with it and slit his throat someday. All around just a not good time.

Euphoria Ending: “Madarame makes me feel human again.” This quote really sums up what I think is the ultimate point of this route, and of this ending in particular. These two are so toxic for each other. That doesn’t change, even in their good ending. HOWEVER! Towa goes from drifting through life in a near-catatonic state of numbness, apathy, and self-hatred to living completely and fully in the moment. No past, no existential pain, just sheer adrenaline and the call of his most base needs. In a lot of ways, the Towa in this ending IS a lot more human than his previous self. Still, I was left feeling mostly worried for Towa, since despite Madarame’s declaration that he wanted Towa since the day he first laid eyes on him (and ignoring the whole “I-want-to-keep-you-as-a-pet” thing), I have no confidence in their relationship as we see it lasting long. What happens when one of them changes? Because they will someday. That’s just inevitable. So I can only imagine them drifting apart and then staying together in misery just like they do in their bad ending.

Post-True Route: Much like with Taku’s route, I am now haunted by questions about just how much Madarame knows about Towa’s past. We know Towa didn’t remember anything that happened with his mother during the years he spent with Madarame and Kaga, but the recklessness and need for violence that originally caught Madarame’s eye were very clearly a manifestations of Towa’s trauma… and I’m fairly certain Madarame knew that. So the question is, HOW much did he know and how involved was he? Clearly enough to know that even seeing the ruins of Maya’s mansion would send Towa spiraling in the True Route, but I like to hope that he had no involvement with Euphoria in its heyday. Regardless, I doubt we as the audience will ever know for sure.

Much like when I first played through Madarame’s route, I don’t think ‘romance’ is really the point; it’s about seeing a version of Towa that, while refusing to confront his trauma, has broken free of his complete and total apathy for life. A detail I really grew to appreciate with this route after finishing the game was how Towa’s, and therefore Maya’s, method of reading and manipulating people just straight up doesn’t work on Madarame, so we the players are forced alongside Towa to give up trying to do so… progress, I guess?

Fujieda’s Route

TIME FOR THE TRUE ROUTE, BABY!!! FINALLY!!!

Listen, I know this is technically Fujieda’s route since he’s the love interest here, but to me, this is actually the TOWA route.

Playing this part of the story totally recontextualized all the previous routes for me, and without that happening, I don’t think the game would be nearly as impressive as it ended up being.

Finally getting to uncover the truth the game had been steadily building up to, seeing all the plot points of previous runs come together as one story, watching Towa get to confront and overcome the trauma that has haunted him since childhood and get his happy ending was so, so incredibly satisfying.

When I first started this route, I was skeptical. After all, Fujieda barely shows up in the story before you unlock the True Route, so you have to go in already attached to all the other characters while knowing NOTHING about this random lawyer dude, and that’s hardly a fair competition. As I played more, my skepticism increased, because Fujieda is just so unlikeable during the beginning of his route; he’s cold, robotic, cutthroat, and clearly holds no regard for Towa, who at this point in the game I just wanted to shield from any and every bad thing that happened to him.

But as more and more secrets were revealed and Fujieda began to shed his armor around Towa, I grew to like and understand him a lot more. By the time he and Towa slept together in Towa’s apartment, I was completely sold on his role in the story.

As the title for this chapter of the story says, Fujieda and Towa are equals. The events that made them into the people they are may be totally different, and the way their trauma has manifested itself may appear to make them polar opposites, but at their cores they share a sameness that lets them understand and connect with each other in a way they’ve never been able to before. Through bringing the truth to light, they help make each other human again.

Mad Ending: tied with Taku’s bad end in terms of how upset it made me. After all the disturbing reveals about Towa’s childhood under Maya’s thumb that led up to this point, I was almost surprised by how… only mildly upset I found this ending? That is, UNTIL THE VERY LAST LINE FROM TOWA. That one whisper of “たすけて” had my stomach dropping and tears coming to my eyes. We just watched this character, through multiple routes, try and live with the fallout of his childhood abuse, AND THEN try so hard to actually face it, only to end up trapped as his mother’s slave just as he always feared. It’s heartbreaking if that happens, but he’s so far gone that he isn’t aware. It’s downright horrific if he has enough sense of self left to realize what’s occurring, but not enough to break free. Essentially, this ending is Towa’s worst nightmare come true, which I hate, but as a part of the story, was an incredible choice. Ending theme was also 10/10.

I just… have so many emotions about this ending. There’s so much hope for Towa, and every other character. THIS is the conclusion of Towa’s story, and I felt so proud of him for choosing to finally live. I would willing pay to play another 60+ hours of Towa getting to live his best domestic life with Fujieda without hesitation. Absolute 10/10 conclusion.

Euphoria Ending: Oh boy. I don’t have many words for the conclusion of Towa’s story. We finally get to see what true healing looks like for Towa and Fujieda both. So many plot points I had worried would be left unfinished were nicely wrapped up. (THE PAINTING??? TOWA’S ABILITY TO SEE SMOKE??? THE 大丈夫 GLITCH??? THE CHANGES TO THE MAIN MENU??? Stop, I’m gonna cry.) The inclusion of Maya’s diary was a great choice too; what we learn about her can never absolve or excuse what she did to her own son and many others, but it did make her human, and I think that was necessary for Towa to realize in order for him to come to terms with the abuse he suffered at her hands. She wasn’t a god, she was a sick woman who died sad and alone in the end. But Towa,.. he isn’t alone. He has people who love and support him, and who will stand by his side even when he fails. As he tells Taku in the final exploration section, he wouldn’t be where he is if he didn’t have all the people in his life who care for him.

The Tale of Tales movie analysis (3)

After looking at the "crone" segment of the movie, let us take a deep dive into the "maiden" segment of Tale of Tales: the adaptation of "The Flea".

To make "The Flea" the story illustrating the "young girl" archetype is an absolutely fascinating subversion of the original tale because, when you look at the text of Basile, you realize that the princess is a secondary character quickly swept under the rug and dominated by the male characters. At the beginning of the tale, it is a story about the king and his flea. The princess only appears in the middle of the tale, to serve as the wife-victim of the ogre. And during the last part of the story, it is the supernatural brothers that shine, to the point the ending of the story is all about them, and not about the princess. Putting a great focus on the old sisters of "The Flayed Old Lady" was just a regular adaptation move, since they were the protagonists of the original tale - but here, making the princess the main character of her own tale is already a big twist compared to the original material.

If we compare the openings, this effort of shifting the point of view is very clear. In Basile's tale, as I said, the princess is entirely absent until she is put up as the prize of winning the guessing game. It is a story about the king and his flea and that's it. But in the movie, the princess is already here, and we are presented the character of a "bird in a cage". She loves her father, and tries to prove it to him with her music, but he gets distracted by a flea much to the chagrin of his daughter. She dreams of getting away and getting a husband, but her father refuses to let her do so, and when he finally agrees, it is by an impossible and ridiculous game which she hopes is just a ruse... Before she realizes much to her horror that her father is serious. If "The Enchanted Doe" segment presents a bad mother figure, the "Flea" segment is about the bad father.

The movie exacerbates the king's nature. He is still a selfish tyrant, but the movie removed his burst of foul anger and brutal verbal abuse when his daughter refuses to marry the ogre - instead here he begs, he pleas, he whines... And that's because in the movie, his selfish tyranny is due to misplaced love and uncaring kindness. Aka, the king is here purposefully depicted as a childish character, an excentric man so lost in his whimsical plays and bizarre games he ends up hurting all those around him without meaning to. We saw above that he dearly loves his daughter - but he keeps switching between not paying her attention when he should, and yet refusing to set her "free" by giving her to another. The treatment of the princess is set in parallel to the king's behavior towards the flea, that he takes as more than a beloved pet - almost a child substitue... And yet what does his kindness and protection results to? Overfeeding, the beast growing unnaturally big, and dying as a result of it. In the original story, the king decides to end himself the flea's life merely to get its skin, clearly seeing it as a cattle more than anything - in the movie, the beast very obviously dies due to obesity. The king overprotected it, overfed it to death - clearly hinting at the deadly smothering of his own daughter.

To further emphasize the king's childhisness, the set design and costumes clearly all highlight Toby Jones's small frame, making him look younger than even his own daughter - and further drawing a contrast with the giant "wild man/ogre". In fact, the king and the ogre are clearly meant to be seen as doubles - something which wasn't present in Basile's tales. In the movie, both men love the princess and want the best for her... While also denying her anything she wants and ruining her life in various ways (social abuse and emotional neglect for the king, physical and sexual abuse for the ogre). Both men try to act out of love and kindness, but are so self-centered they end up hurting the princess more than anything.

Speaking of the ogre (or the "uerco/orco"), we follow this same "realistic fantasy" approach that we already discussed for when it came to the Witch of The Flayed Old Lady. This character lacks all the traits of Basile's ogres, which are clearly supernatural beings: no obvious magical powers, no monstrously deformed appearance, no animal features... He is just a very strong giant (but a realistic giant, not a fantasy giant), and a dirty wild-man that can barely speak. In fact, almost nothing hints at him being an ogre - nothing except subtle clues here and there, clearly showing a supernatural nature, but drowned by the realistic appearances. The ogre's unnatural smell sense that allows him to say the skin is a flea (kept from the original story), his unnatural strength, his impossible lair (changed from a house of bones in a deep dark forest to a grotto up impossibly high and steep mountains), the presence of some human bones and remains in his lair (but hidden among other, animal bones - while Basile's ogres was just all about human carcasses). And it all finally explodes during the last segment, when the ogre proves himself clearly an unnatural being as he hunts the group with the same abnormal abilities most masked slasher horror villains a la Michael Myers or Jason Voorhes use against their victims.

In fact, the entire hunt segment is a very clear homage and reference to horror movies - which serves to better highlight the ogre's true nature, but also allows us to open the eyes on the king's own nature, and unravels the logic of any abusive relationship. The ogre is actually "cute". He is this gentle mute giant, who tries his best to make his home as welcoming as possible for his bride, carries her on his back all the way from the king's castle to his lair when it is clear she cannot move, tries to find the food she can like, and sincerely loves her... But these gentle, touching scenes where the princess seems like an entitled little brat for just crying and screaming at this kind and misunderstood soul, always alternate with the ogre behaving like a monster, by either raping the princess like a wild animal, or killing anyone that places themselves between him and his bride. And so, we see we shouldn't be fooled by the ogre's kind appearance and demeanors, the same way the king shouldn't be forgiven just because he is a quirky and whimsical, almost clownish figure.

And this entire story is actually the story of the revenge of the princess - and ultimately, as we see by the end, of her empowerment and rise to power by replacing or destroying the bad masculine figures. If The Flayed Old Lady depicts a very grim picture for women, subjected to the tyranny and brutality of men's lust, forced obsessively into an impossible quest for eternal youth, and even betrayed by their own sisters for greed and ambition ; The Flea is here to rather show a frail and soft young girl who, after being broken in body and mind, ultimately vanquishes and gets rid of her abusers.

It begins with how her acceptance of following the ogre begins - in the original story, it is the king's angry shouting and vile insults that force her into the arms of the uerco, but in the movie the daughter decides herself to uphold her father's deal out of spite, very clearly saying to her father she will make him pay for his bad behavior by literaly giving him what he wants - leaving him and going off with a monster. A decision which will destroy the king as we see, since not only does he revives the trauma of losing his flea-pet, but he also loses his actual most beloved "belonging" and as such ends up bedridden and very sick.

Then comes her revenge on the ogre, and this is presented through THE big twist of the adaptation. In the original story, the princess is rescued by a group of seven brothers with supernatural abilities - a traditional character-archetype of fairytales, the "gifted ones" or "talented ones". But here? The brothers are a family of circus-performers. Acrobats, junglers, tight-rope dancers, they certainly have impressive abilities - but they are entirely humans. And as such prove entirely useless when the ogre comes for them - from a strange, bizarre, entertaining magical obstacle-race, we pass into a merciless horror massacre, a series of slasher murders making the princess understand that no one can save her, and no matter how much she runs the ogre will always find her - and ultimately, only she can save herself. Which she does in the second big twist of the adaptation - the ogre ends up with his head cut-off, indeed... But by the princess herself, who pretended to give up and abandon herself to her monstrous husband to better slice his throat.

Finally, it all culminates in the final corruption/distortion of the retelling. The return to the castle. As I said before, in Basile's tale the ending sweeps unde the rug the princess to rather focus on the king, who regrets his actions, and the brothers, who are rewarded for their brave deeds. The brothers offer to the king the head of the ogre in echange for their reward - the story ends between a passing of power and belongings between the two male forces of the story, around the third (now dead) male force of the tale, all the while the female characters (the princess or the brothers' mother) are background evocations and mere pretexts. In the movie? The girl returns to her father - covered in dirt, blood and gore - show him what he did to his daughter, and it is her who brings back the head of the ogre. And it is not a happy ending. It is a reunion where everybody cries and every falls down and where nobody is happy but everybody hurt, exhausted and traumatized.

Of course, this being a fairytale movie, this is later subverted with an ACTUAL happy ending concluding the entire segment - the princess restored to a proper and happy life, her forgiven father having stepped out of the throne to become the helper and servant of his daughter, the princess becoming a queen all of her own, made stronger by her trials and becoming a powerful figure without any need of any husband or father. Through the blood and gore of this horror movie-like tale, we ultimately have the rise of the princess-maiden, frail prize, spoiled daughter, object belonging to her father ; into a strong and happy queen, who became the slayer of her own monster.
