Phinn
I wake with a start, drenched in seat. I glace at the window. The sky is a deep purple that is quickly lightening with the coming day. I let out a breath, pushing my sandy hair from my eyes. My gaze falls on the coin sitting on my nightstand. Adalia left it with me when she headed to bed last night. I pluck it up and rotate it between my fingers, studying both sides thoroughly.
As I rub it between my thumb and forefinger, something licks. The two metal disks slide apart, revealing a hidden compartment, barely a paper’s breadth. A Small bit of parchment falls into my lap, torn around the edges. One side is blank, but on the other, the initials “MW” are scrawled in a messy hand. I stare at it, unsure of what to do. I manage to squeeze it back into the compartment and shut it. I set it back onto my nightstand and just stare at it.
Something rustles out in the hall, tugging at my focus. I gingerly rise and silently step around the heaps of clothes on my floor, cracking the door to see Aphrodite’s back descending down the stairs.
Weird. I don’t usually see her at this hour. It’s early. Adalia’s door creaks open across the hall. She’s rubbing sleep from her eyes, but appears to be mostly awake. She stumbles a bit when she spots me. She points to the stairs. “Who?” She mouths to me silently.
“Aphrodite,” I try to mouth back.
She nods and looks back at the stairs quizzically. She pulls on a sweater and slips through her door.
“What are you doing?” I mouth, but she waves me off without looking. SHe floats down a few stairs and peers into the kitchen from her perch on the landing. She’s still, then waves me over. I sigh and bend around my door silently. She puts a finger to her lips as I settle on the stair next to her.
“Yes,” we hear Aphrodite whisper. SIlence. Then, “I understand.” Another pause. “I’ll look into it. Thank you.” Click. A sigh. Footsteps.
Adalia and I panic and clamber back up the stairs. The footsteps are closer now, so we both dive into my room. I softly pull the door closed. We wait a moment in tense silence. Aphrodite’s footfalls reach the landing, then pass my door. A few seconds of stillness.
We both exhale.
“Who was that?” I whisper.
Adalia shrugs. “I thought it was Grandpa she was talking to, but…”
“I didn’t hear anyone else,” I finished.
“Plus he will most definitely be hungover this morning,” she says, peering around me at the closed door.
I raise my eyebrow, but she just waves me off.
“Don’t worry about it.” Her sights lock on the coin still glistening on my nightstand. She points. “Find anything?”
I cross and slide it open, showing her the hidden compartment. I hand her the parchment while I continue to study the coin. When I look to her, all the color has left her face. Her eyes wide.
“Phinn…” She whispers, then swallows. She shows me the initials.
I shrug. “MW?” I ask.
She shakes her head and breathes, “Malcolm Wells.”

The situation now is that, based on the audience feedback from my “Marokon Kauhu” documentary’s July premiere in Kokkola, it was decided to make a new edit that will be about half the length of the original 100 minutes version that was shown at the premiere. The removed sections will possibly become extra materials for the release or even freely available as YouTube videos, depending on what will be agreed between us who contributed to the documentary.
Tilanne on nyt, että Kokkolan heinäkuun ensi-illasta saadun katsojapalautteen perusteella ohjaamani ja käsikirjoittamani ”Marokon Kauhu” -dokkari päätettiin leikata ensi-iltaversiota noin puolta lyhyemmäksi. Leikatut osuudet tulevat mahdollisesti julkaisun lisämateriaaleiksi tai YouTube-videoiksi, aivan riippuen mitä tekijäosapuolten kesken sovitaan.
