man i love the indie rpgmaker game where you play as a monochrome protagonist associated with the stars in a world without colour.
anyways! i thought itd be a fun style experiment to pull sif into the style of a game i think im the only person in the world who still actively cares about: paletta. its not a perfect recreation of the style, but im happy with it!

I think I found an obscure Super Paper Mario reference in Paper Mario: Sticker Star that I don't think anybody on the English side of the internet has documented?
In world 5-1 of Paper Mario Sticker Star, Shy Guy Jungle, there is a pile of trash with various pieces of paper you can read. 2 of these pieces of paper reference Parakarry from Paper Mario, and Goombella from Paper Mario: The Thousand Door. (And yes, these 2 references ARE in the japanese version as well, the idea that they were added by localization is a false rumour.)
However, its seems like the Japanese version of the game not only has these 2 references, but an additional reference that I have yet to see anyone document in english. When I was researching the Goombella and Parakarry references, I found this tweet by the user 7Roggie
Tumblr media
ペーパーマリオ スーパーシールに過去作ネタがあった時は嬉しくて思わず写真を撮ったなー。 それぞれパレッタ、クリスチーヌ、デビッドのメモ。 5-1で何回も漁ってると出てくる。
Google Translation: "I was so happy when I saw past works on Paper Mario Super Stickers that I couldn't help but take a picture. Note from Paletta, Christine and David respectively. It comes out when you fish many times with 5-1."
Christine is Goombella, Paletta is Parakarry, but who the hell is David? Its Flint Cragley, from Super Paper Mario. According to Super Mario Wiki, his japanese name is 探検家デビッド , aka "Explorer David."
Tumblr media
ババ〜ン! 大きな 石の とびらのむこうに 巨大ヨッシーは じつざいした!
According to google translate, this note says something like :
Baba~n! Beyond the big stone door Giant Yoshi is real!
So what makes this a Flint Cragley reference? Well, according to the Japanese Mario Wiki, ババ〜ン!or "Baba~n" is his catchphrase! In English versions of Super Paper Mario, this was localized as "Cragley Ho!" The Japanese wiki page also mentions the 5-1 note, saying that it "seems to be written by him".
The English version of this note says:
Da-da-da-DUMMMMMMMMMMM! On the other side of the giant stone door, there's a giant Yoshi! Yes! It actually exists!
[Source: https://www.mariowiki.com/Shy_Guy_Jungle]
Seems like NOA wasn't aware that "Baba~n!" was the catchphrase of Explorer David, and so they turned it into a reference to the The Legend of Zelda series instead.
Looking across a few Japanese fansites and twitter posts, it seems like this reference is decently well known by Paper Mario fans over there. But shockingly, the majority of English speaking fans don't know about this Japanese-exclusive reference in a game everybody hates to a random obscure character.
Of course, this all raises one last question, Why the fuck was Flint Cragley in Mario's Dimension?

hi ! i was wondering what games/media inspire your projects, and are there any games that you would recommend playing if i am highly interested in your works and works like it ?
Hi anon. This is a thoughtful question. I forgot to answer it for a few days, sorry lol.
I feel like everything I ever consumed probably amalgamates into one big glob of ideas in my brain so that question is hard to answer, but for the most part I play random indies I find on itch.io... I feel like I don't watch/read enough things, and when I do it tends to be me catching up on (usually cult classic, but i will watch anything that catches my eye) anime/manga I missed way too late (see: me watching lain for the first time recently). shimeji simulation, yokohama shopping log, and alien9 are some mangas that have wormed their ways into my heart this year too. Life experiences also tie into my works a lot obviously. It's all really dependent on the specific project.
as far as actual recommendations go... I have a few.
you can't go wrong with the rpgmaker tag on itch.io. A few personal favs that are freeware include Red Trees, Paletta, Starbot, Temmie Chang's games, Astrid & the Witch, re:curse, Grimm's Hollow, the list could go on forever really. Swollen To Bursting Until I Am Disappearing on Purpose is also a great one, but might not be very "like" the stuff I make. I dunno. Anodyne, and basically anything by Analgesic Productions inspires me a lot. But that was the first game of theirs I played and it greatly inspired the game im working on now. Moon Remix RPG is another inspiration for my current game, mostly with the item system. The world feels so surprisingly alive, I like it very much.
Super Lesbian Animal RPG is one of my favorite games ever for obvious reasons. It's a bit of a different vibe from the other stuff here since it's like, actually a 20-hours-or-so rpg, but I think anyone who likes my work will probably enjoy it too. It also just looks so damn good. I want to be that good at pixel art someday.
Basically all of these are topdown 2d games, oops... I promise I play other things. But this answer is already kinda long so I guess I'll leave it there :p

do u have recs for rpg maker games?
Of course, we'll put them below the cut since it's a special interest of quite a lot of us
8:11 - Free / $8 [haven't finished]
Elevator Hitch - Free
Anything from VGPerson - Free (specifically Ib, Witch's House, Mad Father, Alice Mare, LiEat, 1BitHeart, End Roll, Farethere City, The Faceless Double, Paletta, Walking on a Star Unknown, Crooked Man Series, YTTD are the ones we like the most. The remakes if you want to buy some off Steam are also extremely good.)
Flesh, Blood, and Concrete - Free [haven't finished]
Hello Charlotte - Free / $3
Hikeback - Free (this is a vis novel but still)
It's Not Me It's My Basement - Free [haven't finished]
Therapy with Dr. Albert Kruger - Free (not rpgmaker but good)
Little Red Riding Hood's Wolf - Free
Underworld Capital Incident - Free [haven't finished]
OFF - Free
Dreaming Mary - Free
Oneshot - $10 [haven't finished]
Red Trees - Free
Mistrick - Free
Ao Oni - Free
Escaped Chasm - Free [haven't finished]
Grimm's Hollow - Free

Purrgatory - Free (also not rpg maker but still one of our faves)
Yume Nikki - Free [haven't finished]
Wireland - Free [haven't finished]
Space Funeral - Free [haven't finished]
Helltaker - Free (not rpgmaker either but still p good)
Don't Toy With Me - Free
Charon games are good, love their art style but they focus a lot on the "yandere" trope so if that's not your thing you shouldn't bother
Nomnomnami games are good but they're Not a good person so we would recommend not playing any of their games you have to buy / supporting them but they're good fun still.
omori is popular but we wouldn't suggest supporting omocat but we still enjoy it.
we also really used to like Purple & Doll Eye? We think those might be iffy games now as well but aren't in the know so I'm not entirely sure
entropy is also a favorite but it got taken down a long time ago and we doubt you could find a link or much content for it anywhere at all sadly
you can also go to ManlyBadassHero on yt and find some pretty enjoyable ones to play. he's the best.
we probably forgot quite a lot but we hope these work for now!

[Fic] Call Signs, Chapter 31
Fandom: Deltarune
‘Verse: Human AU
Pairing: Swatch/Spamton [Swatchton]
Characters: Spamton Addison, Swatch Paletta, Mike Cowley [flashback]
Rating: Mature
Chapter title: Trash Landing, Part Two
Chapter summary:  Spamton describes his final break with Mike. This provides Swatch with answers, but raises even more questions in their mind.
Author notes: Trigger and content warnings, yet again, for dubious consent, altered mental states, and violence. Also alcohol mentions.
I'm out of my head.
Nothing makes sense.
Mike is shaking my shoulders as I lie shivering in a bed somewhere, cold sweats and worse soaking the sheets. He calls me a disgusting little worm and not worth his time and I should just die if I'm going to, it would serve me and everyone else right if I did.
I try to move away from him manhandling me, but I can't keep my eyes open anymore.
_______________________
Mike has me bundled in a quilt and wrapped in his arms, crooning in my ear in what I think is Gaelic, but I don't know the song. We're in a room with a roaring fireplace and I'm much too warm and I can't move.
I pass out from the heat.
_______________
The chiding and the coddling seem to alternate for unfathomable stretches of time.
Time without end.
I don't know how many days go by.
There's food sometimes. Other times I'm told I haven't worked hard enough to deserve to eat.
There are voices sometimes. Names that are mentioned that I can't quite make out.
There are touches I shudder away from and touches I scream for.
There’s a window just out of reach. Blue skies, white clouds, yellow rays of sunlight. It doesn't look real to me, what I'm seeing.
_______________
Finally comes a day when I *do* comprehend the passage of time, a day when I know where I am and can trust that I can sit up without getting dizzy.
I manage to move so that I can hang my legs off the side of the bed and put my feet on the floor. It takes twenty minutes, according to the digital clock radio next to me, but I do it.
How long have I been sick?
After ten more minutes I feel up to standing. I stay near the bed in case my legs buckle, but they don't.
I find Mike in the hallway outside my room, sitting on the backless settee on the landing at the top of the spiral staircase.
He points at the floor with the air of someone who's done this a thousand times before. Without even thinking, I drop to my knees as though I'VE done this a thousand times before, and bend my head.
He puts his hand on my neck and pushes down. He tells me where to put my hands, where I should put my mouth.
I do what I'm supposed to do, as though I've done this a thousand times before.
Maybe I have.
I can't remember.
He's moaning loudly and telling me what a good puppet I am, and this time something about that word makes my mind snap, and my teeth along with it.
The next thing I know I'm flying through the air and the wrought iron railings are whizzing past my line of sight and I land at the bottom of the stairs.
I don't remember anything else until I wake up in the hospital.
_______________
Spamton had been talking nonstop for more than an hour. Swatch heard the hoarseness in their partner's voice and longed to reach out, to take the small man in their arms and to run with him, carrying him somewhere far away from the rest of the human race.
But they had promised not to touch, not to interrupt.
Spamton had not spared any details of the time period of working for Mike, including the year of the disastrous trade show junket.
Not one single humiliating detail.
Mike had convinced Spamton, and in turn Spamton had convinced himself, that Mike owned him.
In their own head, Swatch could read between the lines of what Spamton was telling him. They could extrapolate how the mind games that Mike had played had led to Spamton "paying Mike back" in carnal currency.
Swatch shifted on the stair where they were sitting as they let more of Spamton’s tale wash over them. One sentence pulled them out of their introspection.
“He threw m-me d-d-down the stairs because I bi-bi-bit him.”
That sentence spurred Swatch into breaking their promise halfway. They didn't try to touch Spamton, nor to interrupt him with words. But they did open their arms wide, their cane clattering as they dropped it.
Spamton fell forward with a sigh, trusting Swatch to catch him. It was awkward, but they managed it, pulling him to their chest and into their lap. Spamton dug his sharp chin into Swatch's shoulder, his breath ragged but starting to slow down as Swatch rubbed his back.
Finally Swatch murmured, "I'd have bitten him too."
When that didn't get a reply from Spamton, Swatch decided to try a different tactic to break the tension, saying aggrievedly, "My butt's cold."
That got the laugh they wanted, along with his comment, "What - what happened t-t-to 'rump'? You always say 'rump'."
"Apologies, I forgot myself. My RUMP is cold."
"That's better," Spamton replied, his voice still shaky, but with a smile in it.
"I'm serious though. It's getting late and the wind’s picking up. I'm still listening, but can we talk and walk at the same time to warm up?"
"I g-guess so." Spamton leaned over to grab Swatch’s cane from where it had slid, two steps below where they both now sat. He handed it over and then slid off Swatch’s lap so that they could get to their feet. He then stretched and cracked his back. “You’re r-right, it is getting colder, and it f-feels like rain.”
Swatch held a hand out to Spamton in turn, asking as they did so, “Are you still going to try to see if someone can do your show tonight? It’s not really stretching the truth if you say your voice is shot.”
“Uh-huh. Let m-me text Leroux.” Spamton stood with Swatch’s help, then pulled his phone out of his hoodie’s pocket. He sent a message quickly, and the two headed down the stairs back to the street level.
The half-timbered houses of Fieldston gave way to apartment buildings as they walked side by side. The rest of the story came out in Spamton’s halting and hitching voice.
Waking up in the hospital. No one able or willing to answer his questions about how he got there without money, keys, or identification. No one having any idea who Mike was. No one on duty able to remember how a packed garment bag with his name on it had been left at the nursing station. No one trying terribly hard to dissuade him from leaving against medical advice. Getting dressed in the black pullover sweater and green chinos that he found in the garment bag. Feeling his heart thump at what was and what wasn’t in that garment bag.
Walking for what felt like hours back to the Pandora Palace. Being told by both the doorman and the elevator operator that Mike had moved out last week, leaving no address, and that it was presumed Spamton had moved out as well. Being barred from going up to the fourth floor by the elevator operator. Being handed a wad of bills from the doorman’s pockets, presumably tips, and seeing eyes full of pity. Going to a bank branch and finding his account closed. Wandering the streets in shock, not caring where he ended up.
“I remember thinking that maybe T-Tallulah could let me crash at her place, but then I - then I remembered it was Fashion Week in P-Paris, and she usually spent all of - of October in France with her brother and her sister-in-law. And I sure as h-hell wasn’t going to t-try to g-get in t-touch with anyone n-named Addison.”
Spamton snorted and continued, disgust heavy in his tone, “It j-just didn’t - didn’t occur to me that I had a choice anymore. I’d shoved away everyone I knew. I went from b-b-being a somebody to a nobody. In m-my messed-up head I figured I d-d-d-d-deserved to be thrown away like - like garbage, so it was time to go LIVE in the garbage. And that’s where Ballew f-found me. Half-dead in a d-d-dumpster.”
The next words were muttered in such a low tone that Swatch could barely hear them. “I was such an idiot. And Mike got away with ruining my life.”
He started walking faster and faster, and Swatch almost had to run to keep pace. They put one hand on Spamton’s shoulder to try to slow him down, but the other shrugged it off. There was a hard look on the short man's face.
Swatch did not doubt for a moment that if the corpse of Michael John Galvin Cowley were to materialize in front of either of the two of them, they’d both be taking gleeful turns kicking it.
Spamton finally seemed to run out of steam once the two of them were back on Broadway and familiar ground. He reached out to tuck his hand in the crook of Swatch’s elbow, heaving a deep sigh. “I wish I c-could say I felt better after dumping all that.”
“Well, it might sound odd, but I actually DO feel better hearing it, believe it or not.”
“So next t-time it’s your turn to - to dump.”
“Hmmmm. Not keeping score here.”
Dark had fallen without either of them noticing, and Swatch’s stomach rumbled. Spamton laughed and leaned his head on Swatch’s arm. His voice still raspy, he asked, “C-can I tr-treat you to tapas , to m-make up for last night, and m-my misunderstanding, and all that?”
Swatch looked down at him and smiled. “You don’t need to make up for anything, my dear. But tapas sounds great. And I won’t be offended if you have sangria .”
“I promise not to d-dance on any tables.”
___________
With surprisingly little fuss, Leroux agreed via text that “DJ Ray” could do both the 8 to 10 and the 10 to midnight slots that evening if “DJ Dreamweaver” agreed to reciprocate next Wednesday.
Spamton slid his phone across the table so his partner could see the message.
“My, oh my.  Not even a ‘forsooth’ or a ‘gadzooks’? He must be losing his touch.” Swatch delicately nibbled on the last skewer of pollo and tried not to think about the menu prices. They had to admit that the assortment of small dishes was delicious, and if Spamton felt the need to splurge after his big emotional reveal… Well, different people reacted to baring their souls in different ways.
Swatch watched Spamton as he swirled his sangria in a stemless wine glass. They wondered, if they themself landed not only an internship but a career at Addison Cybernetics, whether they’d ever get used to not counting pennies as a matter of course
The two of them agreed to split a dessert - chocolate lava cake. As they dug in, Spamton asked shyly, “You’re st-still working your shift tonight at Plato’s?”
Swatch nodded.
“C-can I hang out with you?” His eyes looked enormous behind the round glasses. “I d-don’t really want to be alone.”
“I’d love to have your company.  Might deter the Russian kid who keeps mentally undressing me with his eyes after he’s had a few Smirnoffs.  He’s not at ALL subtle about it.”
“Russian kid… oh g-good gravy, d-d-d-don’t tell me. Kirov Rouvin, right?”
“That’s right. Wait a minute, isn’t he the kid you tutored last semester? The one who ambushed you on Valentine’s Day?”
Spamton made an affirmative noise. Swatch groaned.
“I hate to tell you this, but he’s still got a massive crush on you as well as having the hots for me. I get to hear every week about how you’re the one who got away, and whoever your ‘boyfriend’ is, he doesn’t deserve you. I haven’t had the heart to tell him you’re with me.”
“Oh, man.  That’s g-going to be awkward, then.”
“Indeed.”
Spamton sighed. “Well, I’ll play it cool. I won’t - won’t bring it up, but I’m not going to d-deny it if he asks.”
____________
In the end, neither of them had to worry about Kirov. He hadn’t shown up by the time the last call was announced for the night, and Swatch entertained a few suspicions about why, based on the snippets of conversation they’d overheard from other students about ongoing world news. They kept those suspicions to themself, however, and drove a justifiably drowsy, adorably cute, and slight-buzz-fueled touchy-feely Spamton back to the house on Tibbetts Avenue.
Later, Swatch lay flat on their back in bed, looking down at Spamton and listening to him breathe in restful slumber. The shuttered, cynical look that Swatch had glimpsed during the whole disgorging-the-past conversation that afternoon was gone from their partner’s face now. His dimples, when he smiled and gave Swatch a soft kiss before snuggling into their shoulder and dropping off to sleep, were dimples again, not deep furrows that had made him look decades older.
Something still nagged at the back of Swatch’s brain.
The dates didn’t match up.
There was a whole year missing from Spamton’s story.
Did Spamton not know how long he was being gaslighted by Mike, or had he misremembered how long he was homeless and on the streets?
Or had something else happened?
Swatch bit back a frustrated growl, not wanting to waken their sleeping partner, and forcibly composed themself to try to sleep as well. Tomorrow was soon enough to dive back into HDR territory.
Or next week, even.

2019 Plans!
Tumblr media
First off, thanks a bunch to everyone who took the time to answer our Paletta survey! We have a much clearer picture of what we’d like to to keep and change when we go about remaking it now.
While we were planning on occupying ourselves with a Paletta remake at the end of last year, however, plans have changed a bit!
Currently, our priority in 2019 is to work with Degica to create and publish a full version of Circuit!
We’re very excited to have this opportunity! Of course, we intend to get back to Paletta as soon as we’re able... and maybe... another project ;-). But that will all have to wait until our focus is off of Circuit!
We intend to post more on here as well~ It should be easier to pace our content now that we aren’t making it within the crunch time of a game jam or contest.
We hope you’re eager to see more of Mir and En!
💛 Team Cosmic Latte

Happy Holidays & Thank You
Hello everyone, 2018 one can say has been a mixed bag of both good things and not so good things, occurs on a daily basis and I believe that we can get through any hurdle that’s thrown at us good or bad. Thank you to everyone throughout the years that are following me, whether you followed yesterday or from the week that I made this blog, I’m super happy for everyone’s support. The RPG Maker community continues to surprise me with the talent that’s there, along with the passion that the people have when developing an idea into something awesome.
A few mentions (well a lot ok!... XD) for characters along with the people behind their creation, thank you very much for bringing these characters along with their individuality to light.

So, I’ve made 3 (actually 4, one has a variant version) wallpapers that are supposed to fit the atmosphere of Paletta by @cosmic-latte-games since yes, I’ve enjoyed it a lot. It may be a very unknown game but I’m trying to spread the word even a little bit, it’s quite the gem for me. I think the whole game is designed very well, especially for a game done in 3 weeks. It definitely deserves more than it has already!
I hope you like them, since these were pretty hard to make honestly.
You can get the game here, if you’re interested.

Gray-Tinted Glasses: The Shades of Paletta
(Disclaimer: This review contains spoilers, including mentions of the ending. Read at your own risk.)
The idea of breathing life back into dreary worlds isn’t a new one, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any room for adding your own hues to it. Paletta paints a world where mythical shards give life, flowers can bloom with just a little help, and you can always visit the smiling crescent that is the Moon if you want some rest (or hints!).
Tumblr media
Paletta is a short game, taking me ~35 minutes to complete- and that’s counting all the time I spent stopping to smell the blue-gray roses. As it was made for the 2017 Indie Game Maker Contest, this is more than understandable. Time constraints are a force to reckon with, and it was a smart choice for the dev team to keep from being too ambitious.
The puzzles are fairly straightforward and not much of headscratchers. The only point in the game where I had no clue what to do was in the first town before I realized you had to hear certain dialogue to get other NPCs to help you progress. Simple as the gameplay is, it works in the game’s favor by keeping things from getting bogged down with unnecessary minutes spent running around doing and this and that instead of moving along. Paletta’s shining technical point is in its key mechanic- each shard you collect grants you a new ability, and as you’d expect, these are what you need to solve problems and save the day. It’s easy to figure out what is needed for each town’s signature dilemma by considering whatever power you just got, since that will be your ticket to the solution. I felt the abilities could be utilized more instead of sticking with the most recent one gotten + Light combo and that could add another dimension of gameplay. The final dungeon gets credit for making some use of that, though.
The mood shift is... drastic, at best. Darker tones aren’t out of place in this game, and I’d say it could wear them well. However, getting from mood A to mood B is like finding a bear trap on a safe nature path in a park. NPCs will remark on looming danger every now and then, but it doesn’t feel real when there’s catchy tunes playing and nearly everyone around you is a staunch optimist, or at least polite. In Blue & Green Town, once you get the twin shards, the town goes dark and poor Paletta has to run away from the suddenly hostile citizens. Up until the very second the screen changes, the game has been cheery as ever. The people in this town are friendly to you, even. Yet here they are, suddenly out for your blood. Things are taken up a notch in the next village, where you’re told you have to murder the shard-holder’s cruel father. And you do. Not in a clean way, either: You pick the poison that is the deadly Punara flowers and put it in the village’s food, then watch your victim collapse on the ground in a pool of his own coughed-up blood after he eats. Examining the body makes Palleta back away with a mood-appropriate ellipses, and there’s nothing else you can do but keep moving along to the cheery success music to the next area. That’s that.
Abrupt reveals and transitions leak out into the plot as well. It is known from the beginning that the Princess Chroma ran away- but why? I really do like the twist that the Princess is the “thief,” and never intended to break the crown or cause her father’s death. All it misses is a look into why she was taking the crown in the first place and without that the foundation of the story starts to shake. Still, Paletta hugging a tearful Chroma and the shard-holders’ giving words of support is a downright sweet moment. The game doesn’t necessarily need extra depth and tells a fun, cute tale without it. Ultimately it’s a cut-and-dry plot that checks off one of the most important boxes of the good story checklist- being entertaining and enjoyable.
It’s in the graphics and sound design that the game is at its best. The pixel art is simply adorable all-around. Having a limited color palette made each area very distinct and vivid (once restored) and I love the complement of every shard’s color -and a pink flower- to Paletta’s permanent monochromatic look. Art for the cutscenes and the Moon(’s room) are painted and give about the same feeling you’d probably get from sleeping on a cloud. Every tune that played was light and never felt grating or repetitive. Sound effects were kept at a minimum and were all the louder for it, in a good way.
All in all, Paletta does a good job for what it is- a charming, short adventure made under the pressure of a deadline. Most, if not all, of the game’s flaws could be shined to perfection with just another coat of polish. As it is now, though, Paletta is still a solid game that’d be worth more time than it actually takes to play through it. If you’re looking for a cute, simple little tale of adventure and rescue, add a bit of color to your day with this adorable game. Every second I was playing was well-spent and I look forward to whatever else Cosmic Latte may (or may not) release in the future.
