An Overview of Daniel Draper
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I told someone in a Discord group awhile back that I'd post a character overview of this guy. So, true to form, I procrastinated.
But here he is. This overview is a work in progress as I develop more of his backstory.
Note: Some of the terminology here is low-effort placeholder that I'll use until I can come up with better terms.
UNIVERSE: THE AUTHORS OF PARADISE CHARACTER PROFILE: DANIEL DRAPER
WORLDBUILDING HISTORY:
Eons ago, before the first Child of the Nexus was formed, a mage bent on dominating the world used the Imaginarium Nexus to create the first Shadowspawn-- the ultimate weapon, creatures of living shadow that could take physical form as they please, creatures with no concept of mercy or kindness, creatures that fed on cruelty, violence, and despair, creatures that had the power to use the Nexus to shape the world. The mage's intention was to create slaves with no will or designs of their own, but he underestimated the power and will of these creatures and was consumed by them.
These creatures overran the Earth for a time, but they were driven to an underworld that came to be known as Hell by the first Child of the Nexus, the woman who was called Galatea, and later became known as Aradia. She locked away the Shadowspawn in Hell for a thousand years, and there they stayed, building their empire within its shadow realms.
Thousands of years later, in the time of the human Middle Ages, the Church was looking for a way to increase their power, and they used the old magick that they themselves had forbidden to call the Shadowspawn up into the world again, but this time they bound them to human hosts, infusing demonic essence with human soul and body. These hybrids were used as witch hunters, as Inquisitioners, as the most ruthless, bloodthirsty assassins the Church had ever utilized. The Church used its own sanctioned form of magick to keep them under control, with wards and talismans, icons and symbolism and words of power.
Of course, the Shadowspawn, as always, refused to be controlled. Once the levee opened up, they now had a way through, and they began to enter the human world again, breaking free of the hold the Church had on them.
These Earth-faring Shadowspawn came to be known as the Lightstalkers, and they appear human most of the time, but they are shapeshifters and powerful Hellmagick users. As more Shadowspawn were able to walk the Earth in their Lightstalker forms, their influence in the human world grew stronger. They Shadowspawn no longer needed to be summoned; instead, they could home in on suitable candidates and make a psychic connection, worming their way into the potential host's mind. The Shadowspawn look for people with inherent magick to possess. The stronger the magick, the better. They dig in their potential host's mind to find vulnerabilities to exploit, and will wage ruthless psychological warfare until their victim's will is broken down. Some will induce nightmares, hallucinations, and general mental torment in order to break down the will of the host. Others will use deception, weaving a pleasing fantasy to ensnare their victims. But in the end, the goal is the same-- the demon will walk the earth using the physical form of its host. It's a bit of a paradox-- the stronger the magick and will of the host, the stronger the Lightstalker will be if it succeeds, but the battle for control will be much more intense in stronger hosts. The strongest Shadowspawn need the strongest potential hosts to make the full transition into the mortal world, and since humans with that degree of magick are very, very rare, the most powerful of the Shadowspawn are still relegated to their domain in Hell.
Both the Shadowspawn in Hell and the Lightstalkers on Earth are divided into multiple warring factions, each vying for power over the other. One such faction of Lightstalkers is responsible for turning Daniel Draper into the man he is today.
DANIEL DRAPER'S HISTORY
Daniel was born to Isaac and Charlotte Draper. Isaac and Charlotte both were mages with different specialties, and they dedicated their lives to fighting the Shadowspawn and Lightstalkers. When Daniel was born, they retired, changing their identities and going into hiding, intent on protecting their son from the nightmare world they had previously inhabited. However, one faction of Lightstalkers found them and killed them, then butchered their entire extended family as a message to anyone else who would stand as their enemy.
Five-year-old Daniel, however, was deemed a potential asset for an experimental program that was meant to produce a magickal supersoldier. The Lightstalkers used sorcery and science to alter Daniel's physiology, to turn him into a weapon that could be used to conquer and rule Hell, and then the rest of creation. He was called "the Beast" by the Lightstalkers who captured him, his true identity hidden from him. He was trained in the art of combat and Hellmagick from the age of seven. The Lightstalkers suppressed the memory of Daniel's family, turning him into a blank slate that could be programmed at will. However, the memory of his family began to trickle back. At first, he did as he was taught to do: he reported it, and the memory was suppressed again. But the memory came back, and then another, and another. This time, Daniel didn't report it; he held onto the memories, images and feeling so very, very different from anything he knew in this world. He held these memories in secret, nurturing them, as he grew up, until he escaped at age fifteen.
He escaped into the modern human world, terrified and half-feral, and sought shelter in an old, small Catholic church. Though he knew that the Church had ways of defending against the Shadowspawn and Lightstalkers (necessary information for his role as assassin and soldier), he didn't know the full history of how the Church and the Shadowspawn are connected.
Fortunately for Daniel, this small, humble church was led by an old priest named Father Corman. Father Corman was known for his kindness and compassion, and for standing up for what he believed was right, even if it meant going against the authority of the Church and its teachings. When he saw Daniel hiding in his parish, he took the boy in and gave him sanctuary, even when he learned the truth. Daniel, not even knowing his own name, told Father Corman that he was the Beast, and Father Corman gave him a name-- Jonah, not because he was a beast, but because he escaped from one.
When the Church learned just who it was Father Corman was protecting, they excommunicated him and sent an assassin to kill "Jonah" and Father Corman. Daniel did his best to protect the one friend he had in the world, but he couldn't prevent the Church's assassin from killing Father Corman. He did succeed in killing the assassin, however.
Daniel went into deep hiding, disappearing and surviving by the skin of his teeth for a few years, and eventually made use of his skills to become a mercenary. Daniel was known as one of the most lethal and efficient mercs in operation for ten years, but still, he had a code he lived by, a code that he chose as a direct result of the memories of his parents he had nurtured and the kindness shown to him by an old, excommunicated priest: Never kill an innocent, and protect them wherever possible. Even so, Daniel feared himself to be inherently corrupt due to what the Lightstalkers had turned him into. He deeply questioned himself and his sense of morality. He wondered if Father Corman had been wrong about him, if he was truly as evil as the Church and the Lightstalkers both wanted him to believe.
Daniel finally learned of his real parents at age 28, after years of searching. He learned his real name was Daniel Malachai Draper. His parents had dedicated their lives to fighting against the Lightstalkers and Shadowspawn, and had died for their cause.
Daniel continues to do specialized contract work as a merc, but he is very particular about who he works for, and the jobs always involve some sort of supernatural threat. He also works to track down humans who have been targeted for possession by the Shadowspawn, both protecting them and giving them tools to protect themselves.
PERSONALITY:
Intelligent, street smart, cunning, brave, protective, sassy, stoic when hurt, stubborn, strong-willed, determined, vengeful, never surrenders, defiant, arrogant, sharp-tempered, domineering, reckless, dark side, afraid of his own darkness, keeps feelings and personal things to himself, can be ruthless when provoked.
He feels guilt for a lot of his past, both his past as the weapon created and trained by the Lightstalkers, and his past as a mercenery. He feels compassion for people who are suffering, but he doesn't always know what to do with that emotion. He is capable of great kindness, but doesn't always know how to carry it out. He is a loner, an outlier, afraid of getting too close to people who may abandon him once they discover who and what he really is-- and also afraid of one day becoming someone capable of harming them. He usually prefers to work alone, though he does take some jobs working on a team now and again, and maintains a professional distance from his teammates. He's been in human society for twenty years, and has learned quite a bit about different cultural norms, and he's very good at blending in anywhere he goes-- a trait that was literally beaten into him by the Lightstalkers. His compassionate side, his kindness, his instinct to protect-- all of these are things he nurtured quietly within himself even as a child, because of the memories of his family that he secretly held onto.
Because of the fact that he lives a life of such violence, a life surrounded by so much death, Daniel has learned to cultivate a deep appreciation for the simple things in life, things that remind him that, despite everything that has been done to him, despite everything he's done, he's still human, that he's still capable of holding onto his humanity.
AGE:
38 in present day at the beginning of the series, with flashbacks to various points in his timeline.
SEXUAL ORIENTATION:
Bisexual.
PHYSIOLOGY:
6 foot 2 inches tall, muscular build, midtoned skin, bright, otherworldly turquoise eyes that are eerily luminous in the dark, wavy, jet-black, chin-length hair. Classic bone structure in his face, with high cheekbones and a strong jawline. His body, mind, and senses are enhanced with magic and science-- he has enhanced stamina, strength, reflexes, resilience, intelligence, eyesight, and hearing. He also has a healing factor, healing very quickly from injuries. He has an unusually high pain tolerance, though it's not absolute-- the Shadowspawn wanted him to be able to feel pain so they could better control him. His entire body-- from his skin, to his muscles, all the way down to his bones-- is covered in sigils that were burned into him with Hell-magick when he was being reshaped into what he is now. However, the sigils only show on his skin when he's channeling magick-- they flare with white-hot fire, and hurt when they do so, though he's long since learned to ignore that particular pain. His eyes also flare with light when he channels magick, the deep turquoise glowing brighter the more magick he's calling up.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Sword fighting, knife fighting, several forms of martial arts, military-grade firearms, adding magickal enhancements to firearms and bladed weapons with the use of sigils and runes, advanced computer skills, blending in to any social situation, magick. His magick draws on Hell's energy; he tries not to use it unless absolutely necessary, especially for offensive magick. He uses it mainly for defensive means-- warding, psychic shielding, protective barriers, etc. The sigils on and in his body keep the link open to the Hell realms, allowing him to siphon energy from its Sphere. He only draws power from the Sphere, the central source of energy that the realm itself is built from and powered by; he doesn't channel demonic energy. The Sphere of Hell is dark energy, but it is not evil.
LIKES:
Hard rock, old movies, whiskey, black coffee, dark chocolate, home-cooked meals (he doesn't get that very often; he's not the best cook, and tends to subsist on pre-packaged, quick-prepare meals and diner/restaurant food, or, when in a pinch, MREs), novels (fantasy, sci fi, suspense, political thrillers), homemade fried chicken, fishing, fried fish, camping, cross-country hiking, the beauty of nature.
DISLIKES:
Green beans, country music, bigotry, greedy/power hungry people who don't care who they harm, politicians, hypocrisy (though sometimes he can be hypocritical himself), long lines, grocery stores, the destruction of nature in favor of "progress," milk chocolate, cranberries, key lime pie, abusers, religious fanatics, organized religion in general (though he'll be accepting of individual religious people if he thinks they're good people first and religious second), rigid idiology, people who want to control others.

The writer-activist Wendy Mitchell, who has died aged 68, won hearts and minds by advocating for living positively with dementia. She was determined to remind people that those living with the disease are not “sufferers” and that there is “a beginning, a middle and an end to the disease – with so much life to be lived in between”. She held strong beliefs that people should have the right to choose their own death, and campaigned for assisted dying laws in Britain – one of the subjects of her final book.
Wendy wrote three bestsellers, Somebody I Used to Know (2018), What I Wish People Knew About Dementia (2022) and One Last Thing: How to Live with the End in Mind (2023) – I was fortunate enough to be her ghostwriter on all of them. They were translated into dozens of languages, and her advocacy work won her honorary doctorates from Bradford and Hull Universities, and a British Empire Medal last year.
When I met Wendy in 2016, she was writing a daily blog, Which Me Am I Today? ,which she had started simply to document her day-to-day life, though it soon had tens of thousands of followers. After her diagnosis of young-onset vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in July 2014, Wendy was shocked at the lack of information and support available to those newly diagnosed.
In Somebody I Used to Know, she wrote about her own depression at the diagnosis, until she realised: “I was still the same person I had been the day before my diagnosis.” She threw herself into academic and medical research, speaking to doctors, nurses and other professionals. What I Wish People Knew About Dementia chronicled how the disease affects different parts of daily life, aside from memory, including taste, smell, hearing, gait and vision.
Her tips, such as draping a scarf over a flat-screen television to avoid it looking like a hole in the wall, or sticking photographs of clothes on wardrobe doors as a reminder of what is inside, made all the difference to those who were newly diagnosed.
Wendy enjoyed finding ways to outwit dementia. As she wrote in her final blog post: “Yes, dementia is a bummer, but oh what a life I’ve had playing games with this adversary of mine to try and stay one step ahead.”
Born in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, to Violet and Ken Draper, Wendy described growing up in their pub in her first memoir. She went to school in Pontefract and was a keen sportswoman, excelling at tennis and running – after her diagnosis, she swapped running for fell-walking in the Lake District. She described the Lakes as her “paradise” and Friars Crag as her favourite place to sit.
Wendy raised her two daughters, Sarah and Gemma, alone after her divorce from their father in the early 1980s (although she continued to use her married name). For many years she earned her living as a cleaner, until she started working in administrative roles within the NHS, gaining promotion to become a non-clinical team leader. Eventually she was forced to retire from her job as a rota manager at Leeds general infirmary, and later campaigned for workplaces to support those newly diagnosed with dementia to continue working: “We don’t lose all our skills overnight just because of our diagnosis,” she said.
In early retirement Wendy discovered other skills, including writing, and enjoyed her “trundles” around the village of Walkington, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, where she lived, capturing local wildlife with her trusted Nikon camera. She revelled in the fact that villagers unaware at first of her diagnosis described her as “the lady with the camera”.
She met many dementia advocates, and was inspired to take up campaigning when she heard Agnes Houston talk at a women and dementia event in York. Wendy became a guiding light to others, a regular contributor at Innovations in Dementia and York Minds and Voices, part of the DEEP UK Network of Dementia Voices.
She gathered her own formidable team of friends living with dementia, who produced video content chatting about the issues they encountered and nicknamed themselves “the Four Amigos”. She advised on the BBC TV series Casualty and the movie Still Alice (2014), and received a mention from the Hollywood actor Julianne Moore in her Bafta acceptance speech.
Wendy raised tens of thousands of pounds for Dementia UK with her annual “wacky challenges”, as she called them, daredevil stunts that included walking across hot coals, skydiving, wingwalking and, last autumn, a swim in Derwentwater after she was forced to abandon her abseil down the Leadenhall building in London (the “Cheesegrater”) due to technical issues (theirs, not hers). She insisted that she was fearless after her diagnosis, having already faced the worst.
Wendy was a force of nature, but dementia made her life harder and harder. She ended her life by voluntarily stopping eating and drinking (VSED), a subject she discussed in One Last Thing. In her last blog post, written in advance, in which she announced her death, she said: “Adapting to this life with dementia is over, but I don’t consider dementia has won, as that would be negative … it’s me calling time on my dementia – checkmate – before it plays its final move.”
She also pleaded for people to campaign for assisted dying laws in her memory.
Reviewing Somebody I Used To Know for the Sunday Times in 2018, Jackie Annesley wrote: “The world could do with more Wendys.” I couldn’t agree more, but there was only one wonderful Wendy, taking people by the hand and showing them how to live a good life with the disease in tow, or indeed how to talk about the end of life so they can instead focus on living.
Wendy is survived by her daughters.

This is not the soundtrack, this is a playlist I made comprised of songs that reminded me of or felt like the story. Some show up in the final, some don't. A lot of these are actually cut! But that doesn't make them feel any less like Wandering Star to me.
Go ahead and give a listen: YouTube | Spotify
Track list below the cut!
True Colors - Richie Kohan, Faux Fix {YouTube Playlist Only} Main trailer music; feels so much like Wandering Star it hurts.
When It's Cold I'd Like to Die - Moby Feels just so vividly like Carmen and her story. Really wish I could convey how much.
This Is War - 30 Seconds to Mars I have a bitchin' amv in my head for this one.
Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea - MISSIO Stripped version used in episode 3.
Put Your Head On My Shoulder - Paul Anka Actually used for a scene in the camp!
Some Things Last a Long Time - Lizzie Grant/Daniel Johnston Couldn't decide which version to put on the playlist so one is on Spotify while the other is on YouTube.
Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes - Perry Como Still debating if I'll use this in a scene or not. Because the lyrics? C'mon on.
Fire Up the Night - New Medicine
Happiness Is A Warm Gun - Joe Anderson/Salma Hayek Makes a tiny acoustic/background appearance.
Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival Cut song for castle siege prep at the beach camp.

Star Trek, 001 (0ct. 4, 1988) - "The Cage"
The Breakdown
In this original initially-unaired Pilot (filmed in 1964 but not released in it’s entirety until 1988), we are introduced to the crew of the Enterprise which canonically precedes Kirk’s legendary five year mission.  It’s just another day for the crew when they receive a distress signal to a planet (Talos IV) where some scientists apparently got stranded and lost decades ago.  Upon beaming down to check on everyone Captain Pike meets a cute blonde lady named Vina who lures him into a trap, or cage, if you will.
It turns out all the old scientists were just an illusion projected by some big headed aliens (aka the Talosians) with some fairly powerful telepathic abilities. They explain that they want Pike to mate with Vina (who turns out to be real) in order to supply them with a whole zoo of human slave babies. Pike is made to understand that his refusal will result in excruciating mental torture; although in fairness they explain that Pike’s stay could be tantamount to paradise if he cooperates.  Pike resists by overwhelming the Talosians with intentionally rageful thoughts (which, conveniently, is their weakness), until he can convince his captors that trapping people against their will is… wait for it… bad.  The Talosians, for their part, seem genuinely shocked at this revelation, and so they agree to let Pike go.
Oh, and it turns out Vina was severely damaged from the accident that stranded her on Talos, so she can’t come with Pike because the illusion that grants her beauty would cease if she left the planet.  Since ugly women aren’t allowed to be love interests in Starfleet, the Talosians agree to take care of her, and even provide her with a nice sexy illusion of the Captain himself, presumably so she can have a live action Pike-sex-toy to keep her company.  So I guess it’s bittersweet ending?
The Verdict
‘The Cage’ is an interesting look at what might have been. Overall I think Kirk’s Enterprise and it’s crew are more entertaining, but I wonder if I might have come to prefer the more-serious Pike over kirk’s swagger. For starters I think Jeffery Hunter is probably a better actor than Shatner at this stage in both of their careers (put the pitchforks down, you’re welcome to disagree), and I also find Pike is written a lot less sexually predatory. Don’t worry though, Pike is still plenty sexist here; apparently having women on the bridge doesn’t sit well with him, which makes me wonder if ‘Strange New Worlds’ will ever give us a flashback episode to explain this change in his attitude (since this episode is still officially canon).
2.5 stars (out of 5)
Additional Observations
Pike’s doctor prescribes drinking as a form of therapy. Don Draper would approve.
I do wish Majel Roddenberry’s ‘Number one’ could have been included amongst Kirk’s crew. I always thought having Spock as both Chief Science Officer and First Officer was odd. But apparently the 60’s weren’t ready for a woman with authority.
I love the pulpy set designs. As cheap as it looks now, it has such a classic aesthetic. I dig it.
I just realized that this episode was filmed roughly as far in time from TNG’s premiere, as Enterprise’s premiere is from us now. I’m going to need a minute to let that sink in.

Lament for Icarus by Herbert James Draper
I stumbled upon this painting a couple of days ago, when i was researching for some classic mythology paintings of late '800 early '900. Being very fond of the legend of icarus, this particular painting draw my attention.
What we are seeing are the nynphs crying (lamenting) for the falling of the young man, Icarus, who sinned of hubrys and flew to close to the sun (and he wasn't much of a girlboss, the wax melt and he fell). The strange thing here is, the wings are completely undemaged and we can see them, they are a reproduction of the paradise bird ones made by his dad, Dedalus. this particular choice made this appearance romantic, almost heroic. the man is tanned simbolizing his close approach with the sun (in a couple of myths we can read about helios, later apollos, cart tanning people or burn their skin to make it darker). all the figures in this painting were depicted separate, with different models. this painting won the first place in the exposition universelle in paris in 1900.

TOP 10 WAYS ON HOW TO SAVE THE GREAT SALT LAKE
1 – Save some of this year's snow for future years.
2 – Make golf illegal.
3 – All new housing should recycle the same 100 gals. over and over again.
4 – Pray for rain. (Oops, the legislature already did that.)
5 – Import water from St. George that wants to import water from Lake Powell.
6 – To hell with St. George, import water directly from Lake Powell.
7 – Set aside a ton of money to study where the water is going. (Oops, Congress already did that.)
8 – Set up a committee to read the study and.
9 – Set up another committee to vote on the study.
10 – And the best way to save the Great Salt Lake: Give land on its banks to alfalfa farmers, who use all the water, anyway.
DON'T MAKE UP S - - T ABOUT GOV. 'HARD-GUY' COX
Spencer Cox a hard-guy? There is another side to our boy-scout-ish governor. Who knew? If you want to make up flippin' falsehoods about Spencer, you'd better not do it to his face — no siree, Bob. We got a peek at his mean moon at a recent Utah GOP confab when conspiracy expert Jason Preston accused Cox of planning a “smart city” on the site of the old state prison in Draper. Such “smart cities” or “15-minute cities” are really prisons for ordinary working people, according to folks like Preston. (Like everyday indentured workers need another self-imposed gulag.) Preston is the host of a podcast called, “We Are the People” — great for audiences who just know the mainstream media is part of an international cabal that controls the price of eggs. Well, the guv wasn't having it. “Stop making stuff up to try to make me look bad,” he blurted. “[Y]ou don't get to make up s - - t bout me.” Yikes. Nonetheless, it's a little sketchy the old prison, which sat on 600 acres of very valuable real estate, was moved at a cost of $4 billion to mosquito habitat just east of the Great Salt Lake. At the Draper site, developers will create what they call a self-contained “15-minute city,” (ahah!) where people can live, work, learn and recreate all in one place but no mosquitos or razor wire. Smart City!
CLIMATE: CAVEMEN DIDN'T PAY TAXES TO MELT ICE
“People are not affecting climate change,” harangued  Majorie Taylor Greene. “You’re not going to tell me that back in the ice age, how much taxes did people pay, and how many changes did governments make to melt the ice?” No Wilson, we couldn't possibly make this up. But the Georgia congresswoman does have a point: In fact, during the last ice age — 100,000 years ago — people didn’t pay taxes to stop Earth from cooling because... well, where do we start. It's all part of the GOP strategy to cut the budget deficit. Greene went on: “Maybe, perhaps, we live on a ball that rotates around the sun, that flies through the universe, and maybe our climate just changes.” See Wilson, she does know science and astronomy. Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, too, was all in for slashing funding to halt climate change. Rising temperatures would be a good thing because fewer people would die from the cold, he said regarding health care costs associated with climate change. Folks in Phoenix will love that. Since taking office in 2011, Johnson has taken in $753,247 from the oil and gas industries, but it hasn't effected his decision-making. Anyway, so what if the polar ice caps are melting — it just means folks in places like Barstow will soon have ocearnfront beach houses. It's a win/win.
Post script — Well, that's a wrap for another week in paradise, where we keep track of the Adderall shortage so you don't have to. As Wilson and the band know, Adderall is good for ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). The prescription drug is made up of two stimulants: amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. No wonder there's a shortage. Warning: Do not try this without a doctor's supervision, right Wilson. Never mind. The Adderall shortage is so bad in the Sunshine State that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had to stop by Orem for the Utah Republican Party Organizing Convention where they keep a cache of Adderall for all the hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and difficulty paying attention. Well, anyway, that's what we heard. At the convention, DeSantis bounded onto the stage like a super-hero and declared: “Utah, like Florida, is where freedom works.” Apparently it doesn't work in other places but he didn't go into it. He did say, however, that he wasn't a “potted plant,” and was not going to let the likes of  Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and others with the “woke mind virus” define the national political debate. Like Trump, DeSantis has his own battle cry: “Make America Like Florida.” Don't think about that too much — it gets real confusing.
Alright, Wilson, do you and the band know any good songs about Florida? Well, we should have something for Ron and the Republicans. They've got such great energy, you have to give them that. They're sure fired up about “wokeness” and what it's doing to Mickey and the Disney gang — but all things in moderation, so sing it out guys:
I wanna tell you all a story About this chick I know They call her "Amphetamine Annie" She's always shoveling snow I sat her down and told her I told her crystal clear "I don't mind you getting high But there's one thing you should fear" "Your mind might think its flying, baby On those little pills But you ought to know it's dying, 'cause Speed kills"
But Annie kept on speeding Her health was getting poor She saw things in the window She heard things at the door Her mind was like a grinding mill Her lips were cracked and sore Her skin was turning yellow I just couldn't take it no more She thought her mind was flying On those little pills
She wouldn't heed my warning Lord, she wouldn't hear what I said Now she's in the graveyard, and she's Awfully dead
(Amphetamine Annie — Canned Heat)

Colorado Springs’ reputation as a Republican stronghold might seem overblown to a visitor walking downtown. Just minutes from the pricey liberal arts school Colorado College is a kombucha shop, a store that sells hour-and-a-half stays in sensory deprivation tanks, and a book seller that gives prominent shelf space to the latest Noam Chomsky and is owned by Richard Skorman, the current City Council president. Yet despite those superficial signs of changing demographics, Donald Trump still beat Hillary Clinton by more than 22 points in Colorado Springs’ El Paso County. Even with that small-government mind-set still relatively intact, three times in his first two years as mayor, Suthers has gone to voters either proposing a new tax or asking to keep extra tax revenue. By overwhelming margins, he has now persuaded the supposedly anti-tax zealots of Colorado Springs to commit $250 million to new roads, $2 million to new park trails and as much as $12 million for new stormwater projects. “The ballot items were enormous statements of confidence,” says Chamber of Commerce Director Dirk Draper. “They showed that while the community is fiscally conservative, it’s not radically so. If you can find someone to explain it to where it makes sense, voters will allow it.”
