Some of the things Yuu says in her old diary entries about how "irreparably broken" she is, how she's scared that she corrupted Kei too, the intrusive thoughts about the time she accidentally squished a lizard as a kid, and all of the shame she feels about... everything, really, smells a lot like OCD to me.

Same for her paranoia about other people knowing the "real her", and her obsessive fear of moving on from the past or losing her sense of self. OCD is stupidly good at convincing your brain that crazy leaps of logic like this are, in fact, perfectly sensible. Morality OCD in particular likes to tell you that you're disgusting and/or dangerous and then make up reasons why this is irrefutably true, even if the thought of hurting people makes you feel upset or guilty. It's an endless cycle of constantly judging and second-guessing yourself and everything around you.

Unfortunately, while she and Kei fully accept each other's mental health issues, they also keep enabling one another's weird thought processes. Without any outside support or interference, this feedback loop simultaneously comforts them and drives them further into the mud, no doubt compounded by the fact that being a teenager is notoriously hard to begin with.

YMMV, everyone's got their own interpretations, but I think it's an interesting lens to view Yuu (and to an extent, Kei) through.

to the like 2 people out there in the world that care about this, one of which is me, hints about famously nonbinary animal jam character “juno” are starting to show up in animal jam play wild. greely mentioning the statue is familiar is interesting because it Maybe implies some kind of disrupted continuity between the timelines of animal jam and play wild, but i dont know what the other alphas say here (the dialogue you get is dependent on your guild’s affiliation). in animal jam classic juno was slowly unveiled as the mysterious petrification of an ancient wolf who once sank their ancient city to protect it from phantoms and then themselves turned into stone, and the alphas, figuring this out forever later, were all like how noble and how sad.

The first thing that strikes him is the darkness. And not the kind that he’s used to, washed-out and faintly defined. Nothing but a pitch-black void. Every which way his eyes dart, they’re met with a smothering emptiness.

He blinks, and then he blinks again, just to make sure he’s really awake.

Nothing.

He can’t see.

Panic bubbles up in his throat before he has a chance to calm himself. His hands are up to his face in a split second, frantically rubbing at his eyes - only to be met with thick fabric, cool to the touch. For a moment, there’s a brief flash of clarity in this terror, grasping at the material to draw it back.

The familiar outline of the barracks is there to greet him as the blanket falls away, painted in swatches of grey and white, and Crosshair remembers how to breathe again.

anxiety will have you inventing brand new ways to sleep
