WIP, "Run to Daylight" (Guy's Fridge)
Guy pushes past Kyle to the fridge because Kyle doesn’t move himself outta the way. He knows he’s got Miller and Banquet, maybe some Mexican shit somewhere back there too.
Guy says, “I only got the cheap shit.” He ducks down into his antique 1956 Philco V handle fridge, taking some comfort in the white mechanical buzz from the beat up ol’ thing. Still works good.
This little beauty, Guy had slapped his hand against the mint green solid steel box a few years ago. Chrome handle and highlights, a real beauty. Classic Americana, you’d survive an atom bomb in this motherfucker. Made ‘em pretty too, looks like a goddamn Cadillac Coupe DeVille, right?
I don’t know what any of that means.
You’ll like this part.
And he’d dipped one side of the big V handle down, the fridge opened up real pretty on the left side.
Neato. Kyle had said, unimpressed. It opens and everything.
Uh uh, baby. See, you gotta wait for it. All good things.
Guy had then closed the door, that sweet little mechanical sound of so many little parts clicking into place, doing exactly what they were made to do; and then he'd dipped the handle down the other way.
Open sesame.
No fucking way!
Yep, it’s double hinged, you can open it from either side. Genuine American engineering. You break it, I’ll break you.
Guy, this fridge might actually be the gayest thing about your place. And I mean that in a complimentary kind of way.
What, you some kinda expert on that, pretty boy?
Well, yeah. I mean, I am a kinda gay.
Guy had tilted his head, confused. Kyle had a girlfriend.
Kyle had clarified.
That fridge swings both ways. Me too.
And so this fridge right here was how Kyle had come out to him, it was that simple. Guy loves this fucking fridge.
