A Joyful Life Review

The other day, I decided to move my Twitter threads here to archive them because the Moments are gone. We can never have good things now, can we...

Wanted to talk about A Joyful Life by Gum tonight, a GL I’m halfway done with. I went into it solely based on the art style, and so far it’s pretty interesting.

It’s a bit hard to summarize it without spoiling, but Joy and Aerie become friends during high school as a result of some events, but since Aerie is about to transfer soon, they don’t have too much time they could spend together. Years later, when Joy is struggling with her life more than she used to and find herself reminiscing about Aerie, fate brings them together once again.

Both of these characters, but especially Joy seemed very relatable, with all the gritting, bearing, trying to maintain the status quo and swallowing up her words when she needed to speak up for herself brought her to a point where she kept questioning whether the discomfort/anger she feels is ‘legitimate’ or ‘appropriate’ although she’s been hurting for all the good reasons for years. Aerie has her past issues to resolve too, and it was kind of cathartic to see them relying on each other and become each other’s safe place 💞

And here comes the ‘but’… This is one of those badly translated and/or not QC’ed series on Pocket Comics and it gets so hard to understand what the conversaon is about at times. And it’s not exactly a SoL, easygoing series either, so I think bad translation takes away a good part of the power this series has. It’s such a shame… still, it really deserves a chance, I’m enjoying it a lot (minus the parts where we learn about Joy and i got really anxious)!
